The Asylum
–
The Asylum is an American independent film company and distributor that focuses on producing low-budget, direct-to-video films. The company has produced titles that capitalize on productions by major studios, often using film titles and these titles have been dubbed mockbusters by the press. Its titles are distributed by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, GT Media and they are perhaps best known for creating the Sharknado franchise. As of 2009/2010, The Asylum have never made any losses from their film productions, the Asylum was founded by director David Michael Latt and former Village Roadshow executives David Rimawi and Sherri Strain in 1997. In 2005, the company produced an adaptation of H. G. Wells The War of the Worlds. In 2007, similarities between the titles and those of major studios were reported. For example, the film Transmorphers bears a number of similarities to the film Transformers, according to Latt, Im not trying to dupe anybody. Im just trying to get my films watched, other people do tie-ins all the time, they’re just better at being subtle about it. Another studio might make a giant robot movie that ties into the Transformers release, in 2008, 20th Century Fox threatened legal action against The Asylum over The Day the Earth Stopped, a film capitalizing on The Day the Earth Stood Still. Similarly in May 2012, Universal Pictures filed a lawsuit against The Asylum for their film American Battleship, claiming infringement on their movie, as a result, The Asylum changed their title to American Warships. The Asylum claimed its movie is legally sound because its hobbits are not based on the J. R. R. Tolkien creations, the lawsuit resulted in a temporary restraining order preventing The Asylum from releasing the film on its scheduled release date. In February 2015, The Asylum signed a deal with Cinedigm Corp. The Asylum has been producing Z Nation for the Syfy Network since late 2014, the show about a group that attempts to get the only known person with immunity to a zombie virus from New York to the last operating lab in California. According to show-runner Karl Shaefer, the show is intended to bring a sense of hope to the horror of the apocalypse, ratings for Z Nation have been unexpectedly high, about 1.6 million per episode, and has been renewed for a third season. The Asylums usual budget for a production is well under a million dollars. The Asylum has never lost money on a film, the companys productions have been called B movies and mockbusters. Latt prefers the term tie-ins to mockbusters, stating that The Asylums productions, even those that capitalize on major releases, Latt states that the company plans its productions around the word of mouth of the financial prospects of upcoming films. The Asylums films are released on video shortly before the theatrical release of a major studio film with similar themes or storylines

Philadelphia Experiment
–
The U. S. Navy destroyer escort USS Eldridge was claimed to have been rendered invisible to enemy devices. The story is understood to be a hoax. The U. S. Note, Several different and sometimes contradictory versions of the experiment have circulated over the years. The following synopsis recounts key story points common to most accounts, the Navy regarded this of military value and, by the same accounts, it sponsored the experiment. In this version, there were also related secret experiments in Nazi Germany to find anti-gravity, there are no reliable, attributable accounts, but in most accounts of the supposed experiment, the USS Eldridge was fitted with the required equipment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Testing allegedly began in the summer of 1943, and it was successful to a limited extent. One test allegedly resulted in Eldridge being rendered nearly invisible, with witnesses reporting a greenish fog appearing in its place. Crew members supposedly complained of severe nausea afterwards, at that point, the experiment was allegedly altered at the request of the Navy, with the new objective being solely to render the USS Eldridge invisible to radar. None of these allegations have been independently substantiated, the conjecture then alleges that the equipment was not properly re-calibrated, but that in spite of this, the experiment was repeated on October 28,1943. This time, Eldridge not only became invisible, but she disappeared from the area in a flash of light and teleported to Norfolk, Virginia. It was also said that the warship went approximately ten minutes back in time, many versions of the tale include descriptions of serious side effects for the crew. Some crew members were said to have been fused to bulkheads while others suffered from mental disorders, some re-materialized inside out. It is also claimed that the crew may have been subjected to brainwashing. Upon his arrival, Jessup was surprised to learn that a copy of The Case for the UFO had been mailed to the ONR in a manila envelope marked Happy Easter. The book had been annotated in its margins, and an ONR officer asked Jessup if he had any idea as to who had done so. The ONR labelled the other two Mr. A. and Mr. B, the annotators refer to each other as Gypsies, and discuss two different types of people living in outer space. Their text contained non-standard use of capitalization and punctuation, and detailed a lengthy discussion of the merits of various elements of Jessups assumptions in the book and their oblique references to the Philadelphia Experiment suggested prior knowledge. Based on the style and subject matter, Jessup identified Mr. A. as Allende / Allen

United States Navy SEALs
–
The United States Navys Sea, Air, and Land Teams, commonly abbreviated as the Navy SEALs, are the U. S. Navys primary special operations force and a component of the Naval Special Warfare Command. Among the SEALs main functions are conducting small-unit maritime military operations that originate from, and return to, the SEALs are trained to operate in all environments for which they are named. As of 2016, all active SEALs are currently male and members of the U. S. Navy, the CIAs highly secretive and elite Special Operations Group recruits operators from SEAL Teams, with joint operations going back to the MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War. This cooperation still exists today, as evidenced by military operations in Iraq, the modern day U. S. Navy SEALs can trace their roots to World War II. The United States Navy recognized the need for the reconnaissance of landing beaches. As a result, the Amphibious Scout and Raider School was established in 1942 at Fort Pierce, Florida. The Scouts and Raiders were formed in September of that year, just nine months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, from the Observer Group, a joint U. S. Army-Marine-Navy unit. The Scouts and Raiders mission was to identify and reconnoiter the objective beach, maintain a position on the designated beach prior to a landing, and guide the assault waves to the landing beach. The first group included Phil H. Bucklew, the Father of Naval Special Warfare, commissioned in October 1942, this group saw combat in November 1942 during Operation Torch on the North African coast. Scouts and Raiders also supported landings in Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, a second group of Scouts and Raiders, code-named Special Service Unit No. 1, was established on 7 July 1943, as a joint, the first mission, in September 1943, was at Finschhafen in Papua New Guinea. Later operations were at Gasmata, Arawe, Cape Gloucester, conflicts arose over operational matters, and all non-Navy personnel were reassigned. The 7th Amphibious Scouts conducted operations in the Pacific for the duration of the conflict, the third and final Scouts and Raiders organization operated in China. Scouts and Raiders were deployed to fight with the Sino-American Cooperative Organization, to help bolster the work of SACO, Admiral Ernest J. King ordered that 120 officers and 900 men be trained for Amphibious Raider at the Scout and Raider school at Fort Pierce, Florida. They formed the core of what was envisioned as a guerrilla organization of Americans and Chinese operating from coastal waters, lakes and rivers employing small steamboats. While most Amphibious Raider forces remained at Camp Knox in Calcutta, in September 1942,17 Navy salvage personnel arrived at ATB Little Creek, VA for a week long course in demolitions, explosive cable cutting and commando raiding techniques. On November 10,1942, the first combat demolition unit successfully cut cable and this enabled the USS Dallas to traverse the water and insert U. S. Rangers who captured the Port Lyautey airdrome, on 6 June 1943, LCDR Kauffman established Naval Combat Demolition Unit training at Fort Pierce

Time travel
–
Some ancient myths depict skipping forward in time. The Buddhist Pāli Canon mentions the relativity of time, in the period of our century, one hundred years, only a single day, twenty four hours would have passed for them. The Japanese tale of Urashima Tarō, first described in the Nihongi tells of a fisherman named Urashima Taro who visits an undersea palace. After three days, he returns home to his village and finds himself 300 years in the future, where he has forgotten, his house is in ruins. Early science-fiction stories feature characters who sleep for years and awaken in a changed society. Among them LAn 2440, rêve sil en fût jamais by Louis-Sébastien Mercier, Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy, prolonged sleep, like the more familiar time machine, is used as a means of time travel in these stories. Decades-long and centuries-long sleep is featured in ancient myths. Like forward time travel, backward time travel has an uncertain origin, the narrator rides to ancient Greece on a hippogriff, meets Aristotle, and goes on a voyage with Alexander the Great before returning to the 19th century. While the narrator waits under a tree for a coach to take him out of Newcastle and he encounters the Venerable Bede in a monastery and explains to him the developments of the coming centuries. However, the story never makes it clear whether these events are real or a dream, charles Dickenss A Christmas Carol has early depictions of time travel in both directions, as the protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, is transported to Christmases past and future. However, these might be interpreted as visions rather than as time travel because Scrooge experiences the time periods as a rather than as a participant. A clearer example of time travel is found in the popular 1861 book Paris avant les hommes by the French botanist and geologist Pierre Boitard. This may have been the first story to feature an alternate history created as a result of time travel. Early time machines One of the first stories to feature time travel by means of a machine is The Clock that Went Backward by Edward Page Mitchell, however, the mechanism borders on fantasy. An unusual clock, when wound, runs backwards and transports people nearby back in time, the author does not explain the origin or properties of the clock. Enrique Gaspar y Rimbaus El Anacronópete may have been the first story to feature a vessel engineered to travel through time, H. G. Wellss The Time Machine popularized the concept of time travel by mechanical means. In technical papers, physicists generally avoid the language of moving or traveling through time. Movement normally refers only to a change in position as the time coordinate is varied

Laurasia
–
Laurasia was the more northern of two supercontinents that formed part of the Pangaea supercontinent around 335 to 175 million years ago. It separated from Gondwana 215 to 175 Mya during the breakup of Pangaea, the name combines the names of Laurentia, the name given to the North American craton, and Eurasia. To avoid confusion with the Mesozoic continent, this is referred to as Proto-Laurasia and it is believed that Laurasia did not break up again before it recombined with the southern continents to form the late Precambrian supercontinent of Pannotia, which remained until the early Cambrian. Laurasia was assembled, then broken up, due to the actions of plate tectonics, continental drift, and seafloor spreading. By the Devonian, North China was located near the Arctic Circle, no evidence, though, exists for any large-scale Carboniferous glaciation of the northern continents. Siberia moved southwards and joined with Kazakhstania, a continental region believed today to have been created during the Silurian by extensive volcanism. North China became, as it drifted southwards from near-Arctic latitudes, around 200 million years ago, Pangaea started to break up. Between eastern North America and northwest Africa, a new ocean formed - the Atlantic Ocean, though Greenland, the separation of Europe and Greenland occurred around 55 million years ago. Laurasia finally divided into the continents after which it is named, alexander du Toit Alfred Wegener Avalonia

Carcharodontosaurus
–
The genus Carcharodontosaurus is named after the shark genus Carcharodon ), and σαυρος, meaning lizard. Carcharodontosaurus were carnivores, with enormous jaws and long, serrated teeth up to eight inches long, a skull length of about 1.6 meters has been restored for C. saharicus, and the skull of C. iguidensis is reported to have been about the same size. Currently, the largest known skull belongs to another huge carcharodontosaurid dinosaur. Gregory S. Paul estimates Carcharodontosaurus iguidensis at 10 m and 4 t, in 2001, Hans C. E. Larsson published a description of the inner ear and endocranium of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus. Starting from the portion of the brain closest to the tip of the snout is the forebrain. The midbrain is angled downwards at a 45 degree angle and towards the rear of the animal and this is followed by the hind brain, which is roughly parallel to the forebrain and forms a roughly 40 degree angle with the midbrain. Overall, the brain of C. saharicus would have similar to that of a related dinosaur. Larsson found that the ratio of the cerebrum to the volume of the overall in Carcharodontosaurus was typical for a non-avian reptile. Carcharodontosaurus also had a large optic nerve, the three semicircular canals of the inner ear of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, when viewed from the side, had a subtriangular outline. This subtriangular inner ear configuration is present in Allosaurus, lizards, turtles, the semi-circular canals themselves were actually very linear, which explains the pointed silhouette. In life, the lobe of the brain would have projected into the area surrounded by the semicircular canals, just like in other non-avian theropods, birds. The following cladogram after Apesteguía et al,2016, shows the placement of Carcharodontosaurus within Carcharodontosauridae. Needham subsequently started an Actors List, while Dave Knight began a Directors List, and Andy Krieg took over THE LIST from Hank Driskill, which would later be renamed the Actress List. Both lists had been restricted to people who were alive and working, the goal of the participants now was to make the lists as inclusive as possible. By late 1990, the lists included almost 10,000 movies and television series correlated with actors and actresses appearing therein. On October 17,1990, Needham developed and posted a collection of Unix shell scripts which could be used to search the four lists, at the time, it was known as the rec. arts. movies movie database
