Calgary Transit
–
Calgary Transit is the public transit service which is owned and operated by the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In 2015, an estimated 110 million passengers boarded approximately 1,176 Calgary Transit vehicles, what would eventually become Calgary Transit began as the Calgary Street Railway on July 5,1909, with twelve electric streetcars serving what was at the time a city of 30,000. Eventually the electric lines were phased out together — to be replaced by diesel buses. In 1972, CTS assumed its current name of Calgary Transit, between the early 1970s and 2000, Calgary Transit had a three tier bus service. Standard bus routes were identified with white bus stop signs, Blue Arrow bus routes, marked by blue signs, provided limited stops, and all day service to suburban neighborhoods from the city centre. Express service was indicated with red signs and provided extremely limited bus service to the far reaches of the city during peak hours only and these tiers have been slowly phased out, since Calgary Transit began expanding C-Train lines and capacity and implementing BRT service. In 2012 Calgary Transit planners presented mayor Naheed Nenshis council with a tentative 30-year plan RouteAhead to enhance the capacities of Calgary Transit, on December 13,2012 Craig Hardy, became the one hundred millionth rider of the year a record never reached in its 103-year history. He received free transit for a year and was celebrated by mayor Nenshi, on May 25,1981, Calgary Transit became one of the first transit systems in North America to operate a light rail system — the C-Train, on which construction had begun in 1978. The original line ran from Anderson Station to 8th St SW in Downtown Calgary, on June 28,2004, two new stations for the south line opened, Shawnessy Station and Somerset-Bridlewood Station. On December 17,2007, an extension was made to the Route 202 northeast line from Whitehorn to the new McKnight-Westwinds Station, on June 15,2009, Crowfoot Station was added on the northwest line located directly west of Crowfoot Town Centre in the median of Crowchild Trail. On August 27,2012, Martindale and Saddletowne Stations was added to the northeast line, on December 10,2012, the West LRT opened, with six new stations and the Downtown West - Kerby one in downtown. Since it is Calgarys newest LRT line in 25 years, it is an extension of Route 202, after this opening, the C-Train system total length is now 56.2 kilometres long. On July 18,2007, Calgary Transit officially unveiled a new red and white livery for its C-Train, Articulated Busses, on August 27,2008, a train en route to the Somerset station collided with a construction crane in between the Dalhousie and Brentwood stations. Six were injured in the accident, including one child, on February 18,2009 Calgary Transit celebrated the 1,000,000, 000th rider, randomly selecting a passenger, Shelly Xiao during a ceremony at the 1 Street SW CTrain Station. On August 30,2004, Calgary Transit opened a bus transit line to operate future C-Train routes. The BRT system consisted of a route, Route 301. A subsequent route, Route 305, was added in 2008, serving the Bowness, a third route, Route 302, entered service on August 31,2009, along a proposed southeast LRT corridor. The Blue Arrow name all but disappeared in 2000 in order to all bus stops under one common scheme

CTrain
–
CTrain is a light rail transit system in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It began operation on May 25,1981 and has expanded as the city has increased in population, the system is operated by Calgary Transit, as part of the Calgary municipal governments transportation department. It is now one of the busiest light rail systems in North America, with over 300,000 daily riders. About 45% of workers in downtown Calgary take the CTrain to work, the CTrain system has two routes, which have been designated Route 201 - the Red line, and Route 202 - the Blue line. They have a route length of 59.9 kilometres. The longer route serves the southern and northwestern areas of the city, the shorter route serves the northeastern and western sections of the city. Most track is at grade, with its own right-of-way, the downtown portion is a shared right-of-way, serving both routes along the 7th Avenue South transit mall at street level. This portion is a zone and serves as a downtown people mover. The tracks split at the east and west ends of downtown into lines leading to the south, six percent of the system is underground, and seven percent is grade-separated. Trains are powered by overhead wires, using pantographs to draw power. In the first quarter of 2015, the CTrain system had an average of 333,800 unlinked passenger trips per weekday, in 2007, 45% of the people working in downtown Calgary took transit to work, the citys objective is to increase that to 60%. In late 2015 Calgary Transit began operating four-car LRT trains on the CTrain system, the lengthening of trains was done to alleviate overcrowding as the system was already carrying more than 300,000 passengers per day, and many trains were overcrowded. Many of the stations were also worn out by high passenger traffic. The idea of rail transit in Calgary originated in a 1967 Calgary transportation study, a fourth line, a north central line running from downtown to Thorncliffe mostly along Centre Street was also envisioned, but was thought to be beyond the scope of the study. However, a boom in the 1970s had caused the heavy rail concept to fall out of favour due to the increased costs of construction. LRT was chosen over dedicated busways and the expansion of the Blue Arrow bus service because light rail has lower operating costs. The Blue Arrow service all but disappeared in 2000, the present-day CTrain originated in a 1975 plan, calling for construction of a single line, from the downtown core to Anderson Road. The plan was approved by City Council in May 1977, with construction of what would become the LRTs South Line beginning one month later, the South Line opened on May 25,1981

Light rail

Light rail, light rail transit or fast tram is urban public transport using rolling stock similar to a tramway, but operating at a higher capacity, and often on an exclusive right-of-way. A few light rail networks tend to have closer to rapid transit or even commuter rail. Other light rail networks are tram-like in nature and partially operate on streets, Light rail systems are found throughout the world, on all inhabited continents. They have been popular in recent years due to their lower capital costs. The term light rail was coined in 1972 by the U. S, Urban Mass Transportation Administration to describe new streetcar transformations that were taking place in Europe and the United States. In Germany the term Stadtbahn was used to describe the concept, and many in UMTA wanted to adopt the direct translation, however, UMTA finally adopted the term light rail instead. Light in this context is used in the sense of intended for light loads and fast movement, the infrastructure investment is also usually lighter than would be found for a heavy rail system. The Transportation Research Board defined light rail in 1977 as a mode of urban transportation utilizing predominantly reserved, electrically propelled rail vehicles operate singly or in trains. LRT provides a range of passenger capabilities and performance characteristics at moderate costs. Light rail is a generic international English phrase for these types of rail systems, the use of the generic term light rail avoids some serious incompatibilities between British and American English. The word trolley is used as a synonym for streetcar in the United States. A further difference arose because, while Britain abandoned all of its trams except Blackpool after World War II, when these cities upgraded to new technology, they called it light rail to differentiate it from their existing streetcars since some continued to operate both the old and new systems. Conventional rail technologies including high-speed, freight, commuter/regional, and metro/subway/elevated urban transit systems are considered heavy rail, people movers and personal rapid transit are even lighter, at least in terms of capacity. Monorail is a technology that has been more successful in specialized services than in a commuter transit role. Due to varying definitions, it is hard to distinguish between what is called light rail, and other forms of urban and commuter rail, a system described as light rail in one city may be considered to be a streetcar or tram system in another. Conversely, some lines that are called light rail are in very similar to rapid transit, in recent years. Some light rail systems, such as Sprinter, bear little similarity to urban rail, in the United States, light rail has become a catch-all term to describe a wide variety of passenger rail systems. There is a significant difference in cost between these different classes of light rail transit, tram-like systems are often less expensive than metro-like systems by a factor of two or more

Calgary is a city in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is situated at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and prairie, the city anchors the south end of what Statistics Canada defines as the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. The city had a population of 1,239,220 in 2016, making it Albertas largest city, also in 2016, Calgary had a metropolitan population of 1,392,609, making it the fourth-largest census metropolitan area in Canada. The Calgary CMA is home to the second-highest number of head offices in Canada among the countrys 800 largest corporations. In 1988, Calgary became the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympic Games, Calgary was named after Calgary on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. In turn, the name originates from a compound of kald and gart, similar Old Norse words, meaning cold and garden, alternatively, the name might be Gaelic Cala ghearraidh, meaning beach of the meadow, or Gaelic for either clear running water or bay farm. The Calgary area was inhabited by people whose presence has been traced back at least 11,000 years. Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by the Blackfoot, Blood, Peigan, in 1787, cartographer David Thompson spent the winter with a band of Peigan encamped along the Bow River. He was a Hudsons Bay Company trader and the first recorded European to visit the area, John Glenn was the first documented European settler in the Calgary area, in 1873. The site became a post of the North-West Mounted Police, the NWMP detachment was assigned in 1875 to protect the western plains from US whisky traders, and to protect the fur trade. Originally named Fort Brisebois, after NWMP officer Éphrem-A, Brisebois, it was renamed Fort Calgary in 1876 by Colonel James Macleod. When the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the area in 1883, over a century later, the Canadian Pacific Railway headquarters moved to Calgary from Montreal in 1996. Calgary was officially incorporated as a town in 1884, and elected its first mayor, in 1894, it was incorporated as The City of Calgary in what was then the North-West Territories. The Calgary Police Service was established in 1885 and assumed municipal, local duties from the NWMP, the Calgary Fire of 1886 occurred on November 7,1886. Fourteen buildings were destroyed with losses estimated at $103,200, although no one was killed or injured, city officials drafted a law requiring all large downtown buildings to be built with Paskapoo sandstone, to prevent this from happening again. After the arrival of the railway, the Dominion Government started leasing grazing land at minimal cost, as a result of this policy, large ranching operations were established in the outlying country near Calgary. Already a transportation and distribution hub, Calgary quickly became the centre of Canadas cattle marketing and meatpacking industries. Side platform
–
A side platform is a platform positioned to the side of a pair of tracks at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. Dual side platform stations, one for direction of travel, is the basic station design used for double-track railway lines. Side platforms may result in a wider overall footprint for the station compared with a platform where a single width of platform can be shared by riders using either track. In some stations, the two platforms are connected by a footbridge running above and over the tracks. While a pair of platforms is often provided on a dual-track line. Where the station is close to a crossing the platforms may either be on the same side of the crossing road or alternatively may be staggered in one of two ways. With the near-side platforms configuration, each platform appears before the intersection, in some situations a single side platform can be served by multiple vehicles simultaneously with a scissors crossing provided to allow access mid-way along its length. Normally, the facilities of the station are located on the Up platform with the other platform accessed from a footbridge. However, in cases the stations main buildings are located on whichever side faces the town or village the station serves. Downtown West End, Calgary

The Downtown West End is a neighbourhood within the western portions of downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Downtown Calgary was established as a neighbourhood in 1884, after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883. It is represented in the Calgary City Council by the Ward 8 councillor, on a level by Calgary-Buffalo MLA Kent Hehr. The Shaw Millennium Park and Mewata Armouries are located in the area of the neighbourhood. The Downtown West - Kerby C-Train station serves the community, Downtown West End is also well connected into the Plus 15 skywalk system. In the City of Calgarys 2012 municipal census, Downtown West End had a population of 2,322 living in 1,628 dwellings, with a land area of 0.4 km2, it had a population density of 5, 800/km2 in 2012. Residents in this community had a household income of $47,964 in 2000. As of 2000,20. 2% of the residents were immigrants, a proportion of 93. 4% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 53. 9% of the housing was used for renting

Mewata Armouries

Mewata Armoury is a Canadian Forces reserve armoury in Calgary, Alberta. The building was built between 1915 and 1918 for an original cost of $282,051 Canadian dollars, the building was designed by Thomas W. Fuller and the project was supervised locally by Calgary architect Leo Dowler. The structure was built by A. G. Creelman Co. of Vancouver. The building is located at 801 11th Street S. W. and is home to local Militia units, chiefly The Kings Own Calgary Regiment. The building has a cut stone foundation with a structure of red brick, the drill hall is significant for the large uninterrupted span of its steel trusses. A second story on the west side was added some time after original construction, the building was designed in a Tudor/Gothic Revival style. The original design featured a large drill hall with 117 rooms arranged around its perimeter. The basement included bowling alleys and 30 yard shooting ranges, the facility also included officers and sergeants billiard rooms. Barracks have been altered in recent years to serve as offices, a catwalk around the drill hall has been enclosed on the north and south sides, as well as part of the east side, leaving a short balcony overlooking the parade square. In western Canada this military enthusiasm led to a increase in militia enrolment and resulted in the construction of new drill halls. Mewata Armoury, one of the largest and most fully equipped of its type, was built in 1917-1918, for many years it has been home to the King’s Own Calgary Regiment and the Calgary Highlanders, both of which were established in 1910. Mewata is a Cree word meaning O Be Joyful, construction began September 24,1915 and according to some sources was held up by lack of bricks. Two brick factories, one in Redcliff and one in Montgomery were built for the purpose of providing the bricks to complete the project. The building was completed in 1917, during the Second World War, several wooden huts were built to accommodate the large number of Calgary soldiers mobilized for the Canadian Active Service Force. In 1939, a recreation hall was built adjacent to the armouries. The armoury for a time was home to a Permanent Force squadron of Lord Strathconas Horse, during the First World War, Mewata was used as an induction and training centre and a demobilization depot for returning soldiers. The Calgary City Police and Calgary Fire Department have often used it for training purposes, in 1975, prior to the Grey Cup parade, twenty marching bands were marshalled in the drill hall. Millennium Park is a skatepark in Calgary, Alberta. It was built on the end of downtown Calgary, on the site of the former Mewata Stadium adjacent to Mewata Armouries. Sponsored by Shaw Communications, the park is maintained by the city of Calgary Recreation Department, Calgary has produced several well known skateboarders such as Riley Boland, Kevin Lowry, Dylan Righthand a. k. a. Dillzzz, Ben Blundell, Dustin Henry, And Tyler Warren, the facility is also used to host events such as the Calgary International Reggae Festival

Skatepark

A skatepark, or skate park, is a purpose-built recreational environment made for skateboarding, BMX, scooter, wheelchair, and aggressive inline skating. The first skatepark in the world, Surf City at 2169 E. Speedway, Tucson, patti McGee, Women’s National Champion, was here for the grand opening. It had concrete ramps and was operated by Arizona Surf City Enterprises, a skatepark for skateboarders and skaters which had plywood ramps on a half-acre lot in Kelso, Washington, USA opened in April 1966. It was lighted for night use, Californias first skatepark, the Carlsbad Skatepark opened on March 3,1976. The World Skateboard Championships were held here on April 10,1977 and it operated until 1979, when it was buried intact beneath a layer of dirt for more than two decades, before being destroyed in 2005. The current Carlsbad Skatepark is in a different location, the East Coasts first skatepark, Ocean Bowl Skate Park, in Ocean City, Maryland, USA, opened the first week of June,1976. It is the oldest operating municipal skate park in the United States, due to time, wear and the current needs of skaters, the old bowl and ramp were torn down in the Fall of 1997 and the new park opened in July 1998. In 1999 the City of Hermosa Beach, California opened a small skatepark at the site of the first skateboard competition, the competition held at the Pier Avenue Junior Hugh School was organized by Dewey Weber across the street from his surf and skateboard shop. Makaha Skateboards was a sponsor of the competition, in 1987 an all wooden indoor skate park opened in Bristol, CT called CT Bike that is still in business today over 20 years later. CT Bike is where Tony Hawk made his debut when he was just a boy on his first East Coast tour. The indoor skate park today is operated by the same family who built the park despite a fire that threatened the park in 1988. In more extreme climates, parks were built indoors, often of wood or metal, by the end of the 1970s, the skateboarding fad had waned, and the original parks of the era began to close. A downturn in the general market in the 1980s and high liability insurance premiums contributed to the demise of the original skateparks. Some second-generation parks such as Upland, Californias Pipeline survived into the 1980s, however, few of the private parks of the 1970s remain, with the notable exception of Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. However, many public parks of that era can still be found throughout Western Europe, Australia, the modern skatepark designs of the Pacific Northwest can be traced back to Burnside Skatepark, a DIY barge build beneath the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Skateboarders used an area populated primarily by the undesirable elements to create a skatepark. The process is called design/build, and is a characteristic of many skateparks today, the design/build process ensures that adjacent skatepark features are harmonious and rideable, allowing skateboarders to create endless lines to ride among the many features. Street skating has blurred the line between skateparks and street spots, some cities are starting to put in skate spots/plazas with features that would not have been classically designed for skateboarding, but can be skated by street skaters legally

Greyhound Canada

Greyhound Canada is the prominent operator of inter-city coach services in Canada. Greyhound Canada is a subsidiary of British transport company FirstGroup, linked with Dallas-based Greyhound Lines, in 1929, Greyhound Canada was founded as Canadian Greyhound Coaches, Limited, operating first in BC and then Alberta. It merged with Greyhound USA in 1935 and split after Greyhound Canada was sold in 1987 and it was not until Laidlaws purchase of the Canadian operations in 1987 and U. S. operations in 1999 did the two operations link up again. Toronto area routes and some buses were acquired from Gray Coach in 1991, Greyhound Canadas scheduled bus service operates in eight of Canadas provinces and territories. Greyhound operates 480 buses, but it has a fleet through connecting operators, Greyhound Canadas fleet. In Ontario, Voyageur buses and some Greyhound buses have Ontario plates, from the 1985 model year 96A3 to the 1995 model year D4000 and D4500, as well as the first Prevost H3-45 coaches, Greyhound Canada specified manual transmissions in all their intercity coaches. At first, five speed Eaton Fuller transmissions were equipped in all 96A3 and 102A3 coaches, beginning with the 1989 model year 102C3SS coaches, Greyhound Canada specified seven speed manual transmissions. Allison B500 and B500Rs have been used on coaches equipped with Automatic transmissions until the D4505s which use the ZF-AStronic transmission, amalgamated Transit Union Local 1374 represents unionized Greyhound employees in Western Canada and Northern Ontario and is based in Calgary. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1415 represents unionized Greyhound employees in Southern Ontario, december 23,2000, An attempted hijacking of a Greyhound Canada bus near Thunder Bay, Ontario left one woman dead and 31 others injured. July 30,2008, Tim McLean, a passenger on an Edmonton to Winnipeg schedule, was beheaded by another passenger near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The attacker was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder, Greyhound Canada withdrew ads with the slogan Theres a reason youve never heard of bus rage following the event, citing that the campaign was no longer appropriate. September 21,2008, A young man was attacked by another passenger on a Greyhound Canada schedule in northwestern Ontario, police arrested a 28-year-old man near the town of White River, about 300 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Sunalta station

Sunalta is the first station of the West LRT line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It opened for service on December 10,2012. However, a service for the station occurred on December 8,2012. The station is located on a guideway, constructed on the south side of the CPR mainline. It is located near 16 Street SW and the communities of Sunalta, Connaught, Scarboro, inside the station building, escalators, stairs and an elevator provide access to the mezzanine level where the pedestrian overpass connects the station to Bow Trail and the Greyhound Bus Depot. From the mezzanine level, a two sets of escalators, stairs, and elevators provide access up to the side-loading platform. Sunalta is the first elevated station in the CTrain system and is the station currently planned this way. An Area Redevelopment Plan for the surroundings was approved by City Council in March 2010. Calgary City Council

The Calgary City Council is the legislative governing body that represents the citizens of Calgary. The council consists of 15 members, the elected official, titled the mayor. Naheed Nenshi was elected mayor in October 2010 as the citys 36th, each of the 14 councillors represent one of the citys 14 wards. The mayor of Calgary is elected through a vote by all eligible voters. The mayor represents the interests of the city as a whole, the councillors are elected by the constituents of each ward. The councillors represent the interests of their respective wards, the mayor and councillors hold the office for 4-year terms. The last municipal election was held on October 21,2013, calgarys City Council is a council-policy committee system. The general public is invited to the meeting to make presentations. Any decisions that come out of these meetings need final approval from the Council as a whole and these civic committees, board and authorities consist of citizens and one or more alderman. City Council meets three Mondays every month in the Council Chambers at the Calgary Municipal Building, two meetings are regular Council meetings, where issues from the four policy committees are discussed. The third meeting is a hearing, where planning matters are generally discussed. Citizens do not address Council during the two meetings, however the public hearings are designed for the citizens to speak directly with their elected aldermen regarding specific issues. The city had an budget of $2.1 billion for 2007. $757 million in property taxes are collected annually, with $386 million from residential, 54% of the budget is spent for wages of the 13,043 city employees and expeditures. The average Calgary household pays approximately $2,100 per year in city tax, from 1823 to 1923, mayoralty elections were held annually. A plebiscite held in 1923 increased the term in office for the mayor from one to two years, in 1968, the Municipal Act increased the term in office by one year, for a total of three years. In 2013, the term for mayor was amended in the Local Authorities Election Act to 4 years, from 1884 to 1886, four councillors were selected from the town. In 1894, Calgary was divided into three wards, increasing the number of councilors to six, in 1906, a fourth ward was created, bringing the total number of aldermen to 12

Crowfoot station

Crowfoot was the northern terminus of the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It opened on June 15,2009 as part of a 4 km extension of the Northwest line. The station was the terminus for Route 201 until the next station, Tuscany LRT. Inside the station building, two escalators, a set of stairs, and an elevator provide access down to the platform, the Crowfoot Station is unique in that the Western end of the platform wraps around the station building. This is the first two-storey station to be designed like this, the station name was initially named Centennial as the project was approved and funded in 2005, Albertas Centennial Year. In 2007, the city decided to change the name to Crowfoot-Centennial in order to indicate the stations location. In early 2009, months before the opening of station, the name was changed again to simply Crowfoot, the successful completion of this station was not possible without the lengthy discussions of the NW residents with the City and with Calgary Transit officials. There were many houses and revisions to the plan. The objective of the discussions was to make sure the situation was suitable until the stations open around 2014. Dalhousie station (Calgary)

Dalhousie is a station along the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It opened on December 15,2003 as part of a 2.8 km extension of the Northwest line and was the station of the Northwest line until June 14,2009. The station is located in the median of Crowchild Trail, just East of 53 Street Northwest and is 9 km Northwest of the 7 Avenue &9 Street SW interlocking. The station opened on December 15,2003, and was the first CTrain station to open with a four-car platform, since then, all new extension stations have opened with four-car platforms. The station has 760 parking spaces, from the stations opening in 2003, the park and ride lot was very crowded and would fill up very early in the morning. Since Crowfoot station opened in 2009 with almost double the spaces as Dalhousie, pedestrian overpasses connect to the station from both the North and South sides of Crowchild Trail. Two escalators, a set of stairs, and an elevator provide access down to the platform, the station serves the adjacent communities of Dalhousie and Varsity, as well as Dalhousie Station, a regional shopping centre. Brentwood station (Calgary)

Brentwood is a stop on the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The station opened on 30 August 1990 as part of a 1.1 km extension of the Northwest line, located 6.2 km Northwest of the 7 Avenue &9 Street SW interlocking in the median of Crowchild Trail, to the West of Charleswood Drive. University is a stop on the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on September 7,1987 as part of the original Northwest line, the station is located in the median of Crowchild Trail, just north of 24 Avenue NW and east of the University of Calgary grounds. This was the terminus of the Northwest Line of the CTrain system from opening until August 30,1990 particularly as the Olympic Village was at the University. The station is connected by bridges to both sides of Crowchild Trail, and two sets of stairs and an elevator provide access to the platform, in addition to the University of Calgary, the station also serves the neighbourhoods of Banff Trail and Charleswood. It is one of the busiest stations on the line, experiencing a high volume of traffic from students at the University of Calgary, as part of Calgary Transit plan to operate 4-car CTrains by the end of 2014, all 3-car platforms are being extended. Banff Trail is a stop on the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station consists of two side-loading platforms with access from a pedestrian crossing of the tracks at the northern end of the station. The station is located east of the McMahon Stadium, Burns Stadium, and the Motel Village district, and north-east of the junction of Crowchild Trail and it also serves the neighbourhoods of Banff Trail, Hounsfield Heights, Briar Hill and St. Andrews Heights. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate four-car CTrains by the end of 2014, however, Banff Trail Station was also refurbished in addition to a platform extension. Construction began in early 2014 and continued into Winter 2014-2015 and this refurbishment required an extended closure of the station. The overhaul was completed December 212014 and it features new LED lighting,16 HD security cameras, heated shelters and a much more user friendly, safer contemporary feel. Lions Park Station will have the platform extended to the East which will see the level crossing of the tracks as well as the pedestrian crossing of 14 Avenue NW moved along with the platform. Construction has started in Fall 2013 and finished in six months and this platform extension required no closures and didnt affect wheelchair ramp access. The stations full name is Southern Alberta Institute of Technology/Alberta College of Art, the station serves all of the aforementioned landmarks, and is also located close to the northern periphery of Riley Park. The signage at the station continues to read SAIT/ACA/Jubilee as the station was constructed eight years before the Alberta College of Art took on its present name, as part of Calgary Transits plan to operate four-car trains by the end of 2014, all three-car platforms are being extended. Sunnyside is a stop on the Northwest Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. Located on the exclusive LRT right of way beside 9A Street NW at 4 Avenue NW,0.9 km Northwest of the 7 Avenue &9 Street SW interlocking, the station opened on September 7,1987 as part of the original Northwest line. The station consists of two side-loading platforms with pedestrian crossings at both ends, the station serves the Sunnyside and Hillhurst neighbourhoods of Calgary, as well as the Kensington shopping district, and is a short walk from Riley Park. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate trains by the end of 2014. On April 16,2012 construction started on an extension of the platform to the South as well as redevelopment of the areas immediately adjacent to the east side of the station. As of November 24,2012, the new extension and wheelchair ramps have re-opened however. The station, and the section of the running through it, is the most controversial in the CTrain system. When the Northwest Line was being planned, community residents organized to keep this station from being built as it required the demolition of many homes, the city pushed ahead with its plans by purchasing most of the properties along 9A Street. Eventually, as the area became accustomed to the CTrain, the properties were sold off to private interests, the station registered an average of 5,700 daily boardings in 2005, which by 2008 had increased to an average of 10,400

The station is used only by eastbound trains, the platform for the station is located on the south side of 7th Avenue SW. For Route 201 Southbound, it is the first station in Downtown Calgary, the station is used by trains serving both Routes 201 and 202. The original platform was located between 9 Street &8 Street SW and opened on May 25,1981 as part of Calgarys original LRT line from 8 Street W to Anderson. As part of the 7 Avenue Refurbishment Project, a new station has been constructed one block east of its previous location and was opened on December 18,2009, the original platform was immediately closed following the opening of the new platform and was demolished shortly afterwards. Like all refurbished 7 Avenue stations, the entire sidewalk slopes up to the platform level, the station registered an average of 12,600 daily boardings in 2005. On February 27,2009, the new 7 Street W station opened one block East, like all refurbished 7 Avenue platforms, the entire sidewalk slopes up to the station at both ends and the platform can handle 4-car trains. 1 Street and Centre Street are stops in downtown Calgary on the citys CTrain light rail system. The 1 Street platform is used by trains, and the Centre Street platform is used by eastbound trains. The two platforms are located on the sides of 7 Avenue South, west and east of Centre Street, and are both located inside the free fare zone serving both routes 201 and 202. The original 1 Street W station opened on May 25,1981, on October 28,2005, a new four-car platform for the 1 Street Southwest stop was finished. The platform moved to a new location between 1 Street and Centre Street, one block east of its old location and this was the first station to be refurbished as part of the 7 Avenue Refurbishment Project. The original Centre Street station opened on May 25,1981, the station was relocated one block east between Centre Street &1 Street SE to coincide with the Telus Convention Center Redevelopment and opened on May 30,2000. This was not part of the 7 Avenue Refurbishment and the station was constructed to three-car length with room to expand to four-car length when needed in the future. Construction of the extension at Centre Street station was completed in early 2012. All of the 7 Avenue Refurbished Stations that followed in 2005 -2012 use the basic design as Centre Street where the entire sidewalk slopes up to platform level. However, the design at Centre Street is slightly different from the newer stations constructed in 2005. The Telus Convention Centre, Glenbow Museum, and the Calgary Tower are located near these platforms, as are such as the Suncor Energy Centre, Scotia Centre. City Hall is a station on the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It is located on the 7 Avenue Transit mall between Macleod Trail and 3 Street S. E and it is the easternmost and a Gateway station in downtown, as well as the first downtown station to have dual-side platforms. It serves both the Red Line and the Blue Line and is the extent of the free-fare zone. This new dual-platform station replaces the previous City Hall and Olympic Plaza stations both of which opened May 25,1981, as part of Calgarys first LRT line from 8 Street W to Anderson, the original City Hall Station served only eastbound trains. The station was originally called 2 Street E, City Hall was chosen as the station is adjacent to the Calgary Municipal Building. The original Olympic Plaza Station was initially called 1 Street E and it was renamed Olympic Plaza in late 1987 as its namesake is right across the street. The station was located between Macleod Trail and 1 Street SE, on June 6,2011, both City Hall platforms opened and Olympic Plaza was permanently closed and demolished shortly thereafter. After the 2011 Stampede finished, the platform was re-closed to finish construction. The Westbound platform was finished as of June 6,2011. Olympic Plaza was the last of the vintage 1981 Stations on 7 Avenue to be demolished, both of the new platforms are built to 4-car length and use the same design as all other downtown stations. The station opened on May 25,1981 as part of the original South line, a pedestrian bridge crosses Macleod Trail from the station towards Uptown 17th Avenue. The station has a platform that is accessed by stairs. A ramp is located at the South end of the platform to provide wheelchair access, in the past, there was a special service train from the east platform to the Northeast after Calgary Flames Games, Concerts, and during the Calgary Stampede but this service is very rare. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate trains by the end of 2014. Construction on an extension at Victoria Park/Stampede was completed in the Fall of 2013. It serves as an access to the park and is often favored by riders wishing to avoid the crowds at Victoria Park/Stampede. In 2005, the station registered an average of 1,700 boardings per weekday, as part of Calgary Transits plan to introduce four-car trains, Erlton/Stampede has had its platform extended to the south and can now handle four-car trains. The station opened on May 25,1981 as part of the original South line and it is located near the north end of a short tunnel that passes underneath 42nd Avenue. 229 parking spaces are available at the station on both sides, the station consists of two side-loading platforms and is completely at grade. 39 Avenue Station is the most exposed station to the elements as there is no canopy at all, the station was originally called 42 Avenue because 42 Avenue is a major commercial roadway in the area. In 1986, the City decided to rename the station 39 Avenue to better indicate where it is located, Calgary Transit is planning to operate four-car trains by the end of 2014. Chinook is a stop on the South Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on May 25,1981 as part of the original South line, the station is located on the exclusive LRT right of way at 61 Avenue SW,5.7 km South of the City Hall Interlocking. The station is a walk from the Chinook Centre shopping centre. A zero-fare bus provides transportation to the mall from the station, a 320-space parking facility is also available for park and ride commuters. The station consists of a platform with ramp access on the North end. Chinook is the only Public Transit Station named after a privately owned and operated business as there are no landmarks or communities in the area with that title. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate four-car trains starting by the end of 2014, Chinook Station however was completely rebuilt to a new design very similar to Somerset-Bridlewood, McKnight/Westwinds and Saddletowne Stations. Construction on the new bus terminal started in the summer of 2012, on January 14,2013, the station and bus terminal closed for redevelopment and has re-opened on September 3,2013. Southland is a station on the South Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on May 25,1981 as part of the original South line, the station is located on the exclusive LRT right of way,9.5 km South of the City Hall Interlocking at Southland Drive. The station consists of a platform with mezzanine access on the North end. 650 spaces are available for parking at the station, in 2005, the station registered an average transit of 10,500 boardings per weekday. On July 12,2016 a flash flood occurred at Southland Park and this flash flood flooded with high water marks on some cars above the headlights of the cars causing water ingress into engines and car interiors. In November 2009, an overpass was added to the Southland Park business centre. Southland station was built to accommodate the three-car trains in use at the time of construction. On February 3,2011, construction was begun to renovate the platform to accommodate 4-car trains, on March 19,2011, service at the platform was halted until May 6 to facilitate the construction of the upgrade. Anderson is a station on the South Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on May 25,1981, as part of the original South line, the station is located on the exclusive LRT right of way,10.6 km South of the City Hall Interlocking. The station is located just north of Anderson Road near Macleod Trail, the station was, until October 8,2001, the southern terminus of the South Line, having served in this capacity since the LRTs original opening in 1981. 1323 paved parking spaces are located on-site, as well as a 427 space overflow lot, the station consists of a center-loading platform with Mezzanine access at the South end and grade-level access at the North end. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, construction on the platform extension at Anderson Station started in June 24,2013 and was completed in the late fall of 2013. The Anderson Shops and Garage, where the CTrain vehicles are maintained, is located here, in 2005, the station registered and average transit of 11,300 boardings per weekday. In 1996, Siemens brought a RegioSprinter DMU railcar as part of a tour of North America. Canyon Meadows is a station on the South Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It is located on the exclusive LRT right of way 12.6 km South of the City Hall Interlocking, beside MacLeod Trail and it was one of the two new stations that opened on October 9,2001 as part of the South LRT Extension Phase I. This station is designed to serve the Canyon Meadows neighbourhood and it has a bridge connecting to a large park-and-ride facility on the east side of Macleod Trail. The bridge also connects the station to the neighbourhood of Lake Bonavista, stairs and escalators, as well as an elevator provide access down to the center-loading platform. This is the station on the South line without grade-level access due to space constraints. 260 parking spaces are located at the station in what was the first ever park-and-ride to be a parkade, in 2005, the station registered and average transit of 5,800 boardings per weekday. The station was constructed with a 3-car length platform with room to easily expand to four cars when needed in the future. 69 Street SW is the sixth and terminal station on the West LRT line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. Revenue service started on December 10,2012, the station was opened for the public on December 8,2012, as part of a preview of the new West Line. It was also the site of the grand opening ceremony for the line itself. The trenched station is located at the intersection of 69th Street SW, another major school, Rundle College, is located a block away. The station is also near the Westside Recreation Centre,69 Street along with 45 Street are the first trenched stations to be built in Calgary. The centre-loading platform is accessed at both the east and west ends through station heads providing access to the platform via escalator, staris, the station includes a large Park & Ride lot that can accommodate 840 vehicles and it includes a multi-level parkade. The West Line is planned to be extended further west, past 69 Street SW, to Aspen Woods and Springbank Hill, once the population of those areas is sufficient for LRT. The extension is not expected to happen until after 2023, so 69 Street SW will be the station for at least 10 years

Westbrook is the third station on the new West LRT line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station, along with the rest of the line, opened on December 10,2012, however, on December 8,2012, it was opened as a preview for the public to use. The station is located underground beside 33 Street SW between Bow Trail and 17 Avenue SW,4 km from the 7 Avenue &9 Street SW Interlocking. The station occupies the site of the former Ernest Manning High School, which closed in June 2011, the school and station were demolished to make room for this station and a new school was built 3.5 kilometres away near the 69 Street SW station. The new school opened in September 2011, the Westbrook station also offers a new BRT service to Mount Royal University and Heritage station. The station platform is located underground, with two entrances above ground, and is the first operational underground CTrain station in Calgary, a station was planned for under Calgarys Olympic Plaza. However, only the approach tunnel exists below Calgarys Municipal Building, as part of a system that was partially built. The station was built with provisions for a line to Mount Royal University in the future. An escalator, stairs and an elevator provide access to the platform at both entrances, a small bus loop has been constructed near the north entrance which also doubles as an access road to the nearby Westbrook Mall. The station primarily serves the communities of Spruce Cliff, Rosscarrock, also, the Westbrook Mall is located near this station and the general area is part of the Westbrook Area Redevelopment Plan. In April 2016, a Calgary Public Library branch, named the Nicholls Family Library, opened inside the station to replace the nearby Shaganappi branch

Shaganappi Point is the second station for the new West LRT line in Calgary, Alberta. It is located in the median of Bow Trail, just west of 26th St. S. W, 3km West of the 7 Avenue &9 Street SW Interlocking. It opened for service on December 10,2012. A preview service from the station occurred on December 8,2012, the station serves the communities of Shaganappi, West Sunalta and West Scarboro. It does not have a Park and Ride lot, the station has side-loading platforms accessed by ramps from the intersection of Bow Trail and 26 Street SW immediately east. There are no stairs at this station, the 27-hole Shaganappi Point Golf Course is located beside this station. It has been reported that the Kerby Centre will be relocated to a location beside this LRT station by 2017, from its current location in downtown Calgary

Bridgeland/Memorial is a stop on the Northeast Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. It opened on April 27,1985 as part of the original Northeast line, the station is located in the median of Memorial Drive Northeast,1.4 km from the City Hall Interlocking. A pedestrian overpass connects the station to both sides of Memorial Drive and stairs and escalators, as well as an elevator provide access down to the center-loading platform. The station serves St. Patricks Island, which is only a walk away, as is the Calgary Zoo. The station was closed for a couple of weeks in the Summer of 2004 due to the construction, as part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, all 3-car platforms are being extended. Construction on the extension of the platform at Bridgeland/Memorial started and was finished in 2014, in 2005, the station registered an average transit of 1,300 boardings per weekday. In the Media In 1993, a re-enactment of an incident involving a 4 year old child becoming entrapped by an escalator was filmed inside the station for the CBS show Rescue 911. The actual event occurred at Rundle LRT station but Bridgeland was chosen for having an identical layout and more aesthetically pleasing visuals

Zoo is a stop on the Northeast Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on April 27,1985 as part of the original Northeast line. The station, which is located in the median of Memorial Drive Northeast,2.5 km from the City Hall Interlocking, serves the Calgary Zoo, Telus Spark as well as the community of Bridgeland. Stylistically, the design of Zoo Station differs from the stations in the CTrain system as it incorporates images of animals. The stations center-loading platform is accessed via ramps leading up from a tunnel below Memorial Drive, the tunnel below Memorial Drive also houses several permanent zoo-related exhibits. Although Calgary Transit does not operate a park-and-ride at this station, as part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, all 3-car platforms are being extended. The station opened on April 27,1985 as part of the original Northeast line, the station is located in the median of Memorial Drive Southeast, located at the intersection with 19 Street Northeast. The station is 3.9 km from the City Hall Interlocking, the station serves industrial and commercial areas located along Barlow Trail, such as Mayland, as well as the neighbourhood of Radisson Heights/Albert Park and the Max Bell Centre arena. A small 50 space parking lot is available for commuters, the stations center-loading platform is accessed via ramps from a pedestrian tunnel under Memorial Drive. Barlow/Max Bell and Zoo are the stations in the system that are constructed this way. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, barlow/Max Bell station will also see new furnishings in addition to a platform extension. Franklin station (Calgary)

Franklin is a stop on the Northeast Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The station opened on April 27,1985 as part of the original Northeast line, the station is located in the median of Memorial Drive, just West of the intersection with 28 Street SE. The station is 4.7 km from the City Hall Interlocking, pedestrian bridges connect the station to either side of Memorial Drive. Stairs, escalators, as well as an elevator provide access down to the center-loading platform, the station serves residential neighbourhoods to the south and industrial areas to the north. 578 parking spaces are available for commuters, as part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, all 3-car platforms are being extended. Franklin station also had new furnishings installed, in addition to a platform extension, construction was completed in the late Summer/Fall of 2013. Marlborough station

Marlborough is a stop on the Northeast Line of the CTrain light rail system in Calgary, Alberta. The station opened on April 27,1985 as part of the original Northeast line, the station is located in the median of 36 Street NE, located near its intersection with 8 Avenue NE/Marlborough Drive NE. The station is 6.5 km from the City Hall Interlocking and is located near Calgarys Marlborough neighborhood and also serves nearby businesses along 36 Street, pedestrian overpasses connect the station to both sides of 36 Street NE. Stairs, escalators, as well as an elevator provide access down to the center-loading platform,485 spaces of the mall facility are now owned by Calgary Transit and are designated for park-and-ride service. As part of Calgary Transits plan to operate 4-car trains by the end of 2014, Marlborough station saw new furnishings in addition to a platform extension. Construction started in the late Summer of 2013, and was finished in January 2014, in 2005, the station registered an average transit of 19,600 boardings per weekday, the busiest station in the system other than the downtown platforms
