The 161st Intelligence Squadron (161 IS) is a unit of the 184th Intelligence Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita, Kansas. The 161st is a non-flying squadron operating the Distributed Common Ground System.

History[edit]

The squadron was activated on 1 April 2006 and assigned to the 184th Refueling Wing, McConnell Air Force Base.[1] The unit was constituted and allotted to the Kansas Air National Guard on 23 April 2006 as the 161st Intelligence Squadron, falling under Air Combat Command.[2]

On 1 July 2008, the unit was assigned to the 184th Intelligence Group, under the 184th Intelligence Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, McConnell Air Force Base.[3]

The 161st Intelligence Squadron received federal recognition effective 2 June 2010.[4]

Lineage[edit]

  • The unit was constituted and allotted to the Kansas Air National Guard on 23 April 2006 as the 161st Intelligence Squadron, falling under Air Combat Command.[5] The unit currently utilizes an unauthorized emblem derived from airplane nose art used by the original Kansas Air National Guard unit.

Aircraft[edit]

  • This unit does not operate aircraft. There is a unit with a similar number that operated at McConnell AFB, the 161st Tactical Fighter Training Squadron which was placed in an inactive status in the 1970s. That squadron does not share lineage with the 161st Intelligence Squadron.[9]
