Extended play
–
An extended play is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered less expensive, an EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, EPs—originally extended-play single releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk, in the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks. EPs were released in various sizes in different eras, the earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as 2-in-1 records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records, by 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 33 1⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side. Partly as an attempt to compete with the LP introduced in 1948 by rival Columbia, RCA Victor introduced Extended Play 45s during 1952. Their narrower grooves, achieved by lowering the levels and sound compression optionally. These were usually 10-inch LPs split onto two seven-inch EPs or 12-inch LPs split onto three seven-inch EPs, either separately or together in gatefold covers. This practice became less common with the advent of triple-speed-available phonographs. Some classical music albums released at the beginning of the LP era were distributed as EP albums—notably the seven operas that Arturo Toscanini conducted on radio between 1944 and 1954. These opera EPs, originally broadcast on the NBC Radio network and manufactured by RCA, in the 1990s, they began appearing on compact discs. During the 1950s, RCA published several EP albums of Walt Disney movies and these usually featured the original casts of actors and actresses. Each album contained two seven-inch records, plus an illustrated booklet containing the text of the recording, so that children could follow along by reading. Some of the titles included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and what was then a recent release, because of the popularity of 7 and other formats, SP records became less popular and the production of SPs in Japan was suspended in 1963. In the 1950s and 1960s, EPs were usually compilations of singles or album samplers and were played at 45 rpm on seven-inch discs. Record Retailer printed the first EP chart in 1960, the New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Disc and Music Echo and the Record Mirror continued to list EPs on their respective singles charts. The Beatles Twist and Shout outsold most singles for some weeks in 1963, when the BBC and Record Retailer commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile a chart it was restricted to singles and EPs disappeared from the listings. In the Philippines, seven-inch EPs marketed as mini-LPs were introduced in 1970, with tracks selected from an album and this mini-LP format also became popular in America in the early 1970s for promotional releases, and also for use in jukeboxes

Trey Anastasio
–
Anastasio was a 2013 best score Tony award nominee for the Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody. He received the 2013 Dramatist Guild Frederick Loewe award for Dramatic Composition. In addition to his compositions, he is credited by name as composer of 152 Phish original songs,140 of them as a solo credit. Anastasio was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved to Princeton, New Jersey and his father, Ernest Anastasio Jr. was an executive vice president at the Educational Testing Service. His mother, Dina, was a book author and editor of Sesame Street Magazine. He grew up with his sister Kristy, Anastasio attended Princeton public schools through the fourth grade, then transferred to Princeton Day School. At Taft, he created his first two bands, Red Tide and Space Antelope, Anastasio attended the University of Vermont and Goddard College. Anastasio enrolled at UVM as a major, where he met original Phish bandmates Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon. On December 2,1983 the group played their first gig in the Harris-Millis Cafeteria at UVM. Although frequently referred to as an ROTC dance, this information is incorrect - it was in fact a Christmas semi-formal for Mikes dorm, the setlist consisted of cover songs, including Long Cool Woman and Proud Mary which was performed twice. The band was very primitive at this time and used hockey sticks as mic stands, after performing one set, Michael Jacksons Thriller album was put on by a party-goer to drown out the band. The band would not return to play but were paid for the performance. At UVM, he hosted a morning radio program, Ambient Alarm Clock. After seeing a Phish show, pianist Page McConnell joined Phish in the autumn of 1985, Anastasio, along with Jon Fishman, transferred to Goddard College. During this time he began an association and close friendship with composer Ernie Stires, who taught him composition, theory. While at Goddard, he composed the song cycle The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday as his senior project and these songs would become mainstays of the Phish catalog. He graduated from Goddard in 1988, Anastasio is a founding member of the rock band Phish, serving as lead guitarist and vocalist since their inception. Phish is noted for their musical improvisation, extended jams, exploration of a range of genres

The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east, the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U. S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean, the geography, climate and wildlife of the country are extremely diverse. At 3.8 million square miles and with over 324 million people, the United States is the worlds third- or fourth-largest country by area, third-largest by land area. It is one of the worlds most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, paleo-Indians migrated from Asia to the North American mainland at least 15,000 years ago. European colonization began in the 16th century, the United States emerged from 13 British colonies along the East Coast. Numerous disputes between Great Britain and the following the Seven Years War led to the American Revolution. On July 4,1776, during the course of the American Revolutionary War, the war ended in 1783 with recognition of the independence of the United States by Great Britain, representing the first successful war of independence against a European power. The current constitution was adopted in 1788, after the Articles of Confederation, the first ten amendments, collectively named the Bill of Rights, were ratified in 1791 and designed to guarantee many fundamental civil liberties. During the second half of the 19th century, the American Civil War led to the end of slavery in the country. By the end of century, the United States extended into the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish–American War and World War I confirmed the status as a global military power. The end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 left the United States as the sole superpower. The U. The United States is a developed country, with the worlds largest economy by nominal GDP. It ranks highly in several measures of performance, including average wage, human development, per capita GDP. While the U. S. economy is considered post-industrial, characterized by the dominance of services and knowledge economy, the United States is a prominent political and cultural force internationally, and a leader in scientific research and technological innovations. In 1507, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller produced a map on which he named the lands of the Western Hemisphere America after the Italian explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci

Rock music
–
It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of genres such as electric blues and folk. Musically, rock has centered on the guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse-chorus form, like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. Punk was an influence into the 1980s on the subsequent development of subgenres, including new wave, post-punk. From the 1990s alternative rock began to rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop. Similarly, 1970s punk culture spawned the visually distinctive goth and emo subcultures and this trio of instruments has often been complemented by the inclusion of other instruments, particularly keyboards such as the piano, Hammond organ and synthesizers. The basic rock instrumentation was adapted from the blues band instrumentation. A group of musicians performing rock music is termed a rock band or rock group, Rock music is traditionally built on a foundation of simple unsyncopated rhythms in a 4/4 meter, with a repetitive snare drum back beat on beats two and four. Melodies are often derived from older musical modes, including the Dorian and Mixolydian, harmonies range from the common triad to parallel fourths and fifths and dissonant harmonic progressions. Critics have stressed the eclecticism and stylistic diversity of rock, because of its complex history and tendency to borrow from other musical and cultural forms, it has been argued that it is impossible to bind rock music to a rigidly delineated musical definition. These themes were inherited from a variety of sources, including the Tin Pan Alley pop tradition, folk music and rhythm, as a result, it has been seen as articulating the concerns of this group in both style and lyrics. Christgau, writing in 1972, said in spite of some exceptions, rock and roll usually implies an identification of male sexuality, according to Simon Frith rock was something more than pop, something more than rock and roll. Rock musicians combined an emphasis on skill and technique with the concept of art as artistic expression, original. The foundations of music are in rock and roll, which originated in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its immediate origins lay in a melding of various musical genres of the time, including rhythm and blues and gospel music, with country. In 1951, Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed began playing rhythm and blues music for a multi-racial audience, debate surrounds which record should be considered the first rock and roll record. Other artists with rock and roll hits included Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis

Record producer
–
A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. Producers became creative figures in the studio, other examples of such engineers includes Joe Meek, Teo Macero, Brian Wilson, and Biddu

Tom Marshall (singer)
–
Tom Marshall is a lyricist, keyboardist and singer/songwriter best known for his association with Trey Anastasio and the rock band Phish. He has been the primary external lyricist for Phish during their career, Marshall attended Princeton Day School in New Jersey with Anastasio. The duo began writing together as early as the eighth grade. Other early collaborations include Bivouac Jaun, a recorded by Marshall, Anastasio. Many of the recorded on Bivouac Jaun appeared on The White Tape. Many characters and locations mentioned in early Phish songs reference these songwriting sessions, in one instance, Marshall wrote the original lyrics to the Gamehendge song McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters and nailed them to Anastasios front door. By 1985, Anastasio and Marshall had parted ways as Anastasio became more involved with Phish at the University of Vermont, years later in 1989, Marshall apparently heard Phishs Junta album and thought to himself, these guys really need lyrics. Marshall and Anastasio reunited and began a songwriting partnership that resulted in over 100 songs over the next fifteen years. Anastasios 2005 solo album Shine marks the first time since the years that he has not worked with Marshall. As of Spring of 2008, Anastasio and Marshall are once again engaging in writing sessions in Anastasios studio in upstate New York. In addition to working closely with Anastasio, Marshall fronts his own band, Amfibian, in the fall of 2010, Marshall collaborated with CT jam band The McLovins to co-write Cohesive, recorded with Marshall and Anthony Krizan at Krizans Sonic Boom studios. In mid-November 2010, Marshall joined his longtime friend Trey Anastasio on stage at the historic Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall Princeton University bringing them back to their roots, Marshall has a wife named Lea-Lea, a daughter named Anna and a son named Brodie. He is also a lover of good beer and witty banter, Amfibian Tales Trampled By Lambs and Pecked by the Dove From the Ether Skip the Goodbyes Phish. Stirling numbers of the first kind
–
In mathematics, especially in combinatorics, Stirling numbers of the first kind arise in the study of permutations. In particular, the Stirling numbers of the first kind count permutations according to their number of cycles, the original definition of Stirling numbers of the first kind was algebraic. These numbers, usually written s, are signed integers whose sign, positive or negative and that is the approach taken on this page. Most identities on this page are stated for unsigned Stirling numbers, note that the notations on this page are not universal. The unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind are denoted in various ways by different authors, common notations are c, | s | and. They count the number of permutations of n elements with k disjoint cycles, =6 permutations of three elements, there is one permutation with three cycles, three permutations with two cycles and two permutations with one cycle. The unsigned Stirling numbers also arise as coefficients of the rising factorial, thus, for example, = x =1 ⋅ x 3 +3 ⋅ x 2 +2 ⋅ x, which matches the computations in the preceding paragraph. Stirling numbers of the first kind are given by s = n − k and they are the coefficients in the expansion n = ∑ k =0 n s x k, where n is the falling factorial n = x ⋯. The unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind can be calculated by the recurrence relation = n + for k >0 and it follows immediately that the Stirling numbers of the first kind satisfy the recurrence s = − n s + s. We prove the recurrence relation using the definition of Stirling numbers in terms of rising factorials, distributing the last term of the product, we have = x ⋯ = n + x. The coefficient of xk on the side of this equation is. The coefficient of xk in n is n ⋅, while the coefficient of xk in x is, since the two sides are equal as polynomials, the coefficients of xk on both sides must be equal, and the result follows. We prove the recurrence relation using the definition of Stirling numbers in terms of permutations with a number of cycles. Consider forming a permutation of n +1 objects from a permutation of n objects by adding a distinguished object, there are exactly two ways in which this can be accomplished. We could do this by forming a cycle, i. e. leaving the extra object alone. This increases the number of cycles by 1 and so accounts for the term in the recurrence formula and we could also insert the new object into one of the existing cycles. Consider an arbitrary permutation of n objects with k cycles, an, so that the permutation is represented by … ⏟ k c y c l e s. To form a new permutation of n +1 objects and k cycles one must insert the new object into this array, there are n ways to perform this insertion, inserting the new object immediately following any of the n already present

Golden ratio
–
In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. The figure on the right illustrates the geometric relationship, expressed algebraically, for quantities a and b with a > b >0, a + b a = a b = def φ, where the Greek letter phi represents the golden ratio. Its value is, φ =1 +52 =1.6180339887 …, A001622 The golden ratio is also called the golden mean or golden section. Other names include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section, golden proportion, golden cut, the golden ratio appears in some patterns in nature, including the spiral arrangement of leaves and other plant parts. The golden ratio has also used to analyze the proportions of natural objects as well as man-made systems such as financial markets. Two quantities a and b are said to be in the golden ratio φ if a + b a = a b = φ, one method for finding the value of φ is to start with the left fraction. Through simplifying the fraction and substituting in b/a = 1/φ, a + b a =1 + b a =1 +1 φ, multiplying by φ gives φ +1 = φ2 which can be rearranged to φ2 − φ −1 =0. First, the line segment A B ¯ is about doubled and then the semicircle with the radius A S ¯ around the point S is drawn, now the semicircle is drawn with the radius A B ¯ around the point B. The arising intersection point E corresponds 2 φ, next up, the perpendicular on the line segment A E ¯ from the point D will be establish. The subsequent parallel F S ¯ to the line segment C M ¯, produces, as it were and it is well recognizable, this triangle and the triangle M S C are similar to each other. The hypotenuse F S ¯ has due to the cathetuses S D ¯ =1 and D F ¯ =2 according the Pythagorean theorem, finally, the circle arc is drawn with the radius 5 around the point F. The golden ratio has been claimed to have held a fascination for at least 2,400 years. But the fascination with the Golden Ratio is not confined just to mathematicians, biologists, artists, musicians, historians, architects, psychologists, and even mystics have pondered and debated the basis of its ubiquity and appeal. In fact, it is fair to say that the Golden Ratio has inspired thinkers of all disciplines like no other number in the history of mathematics. Ancient Greek mathematicians first studied what we now call the golden ratio because of its frequent appearance in geometry, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio is important in the geometry of regular pentagrams and pentagons. Euclid explains a construction for cutting a line in extreme and mean ratio, throughout the Elements, several propositions and their proofs employ the golden ratio. The golden ratio is explored in Luca Paciolis book De divina proportione, since the 20th century, the golden ratio has been represented by the Greek letter φ or less commonly by τ. Timeline according to Priya Hemenway, Phidias made the Parthenon statues that seem to embody the golden ratio, plato, in his Timaeus, describes five possible regular solids, some of which are related to the golden ratio

Series (mathematics)
–
In mathematics, a series is, informally speaking, the sum of the terms of an infinite sequence. The sum of a sequence has defined first and last terms. To emphasize that there are a number of terms, a series is often called an infinite series. In order to make the notion of an infinite sum mathematically rigorous, given an infinite sequence, the associated series is the expression obtained by adding all those terms together, a 1 + a 2 + a 3 + ⋯. These can be written compactly as ∑ i =1 ∞ a i, by using the summation symbol ∑. The sequence can be composed of any kind of object for which addition is defined. A series is evaluated by examining the finite sums of the first n terms of a sequence, called the nth partial sum of the sequence, and taking the limit as n approaches infinity. If this limit does not exist, the infinite sum cannot be assigned a value, and, in this case, the series is said to be divergent. On the other hand, if the partial sums tend to a limit when the number of terms increases indefinitely, then the series is said to be convergent, and the limit is called the sum of the series. An example is the series from Zenos dichotomy and its mathematical representation, ∑ n =1 ∞12 n =12 +14 +18 + ⋯. The study of series is a part of mathematical analysis. Series are used in most areas of mathematics, even for studying finite structures, in addition to their ubiquity in mathematics, infinite series are also widely used in other quantitative disciplines such as physics, computer science, statistics and finance. For any sequence of numbers, real numbers, complex numbers, functions thereof. By definition the series ∑ n =0 ∞ a n converges to a limit L if and this definition is usually written as L = ∑ n =0 ∞ a n ⇔ L = lim k → ∞ s k. When the index set is the natural numbers I = N, a series indexed on the natural numbers is an ordered formal sum and so we rewrite ∑ n ∈ N as ∑ n =0 ∞ in order to emphasize the ordering induced by the natural numbers. Thus, we obtain the common notation for a series indexed by the natural numbers ∑ n =0 ∞ a n = a 0 + a 1 + a 2 + ⋯. When the semigroup G is also a space, then the series ∑ n =0 ∞ a n converges to an element L ∈ G if. This definition is usually written as L = ∑ n =0 ∞ a n ⇔ L = lim k → ∞ s k, a series ∑an is said to converge or to be convergent when the sequence SN of partial sums has a finite limit

Trey Anastasio with Special Guest Carlos Santana
–
It was released under the name Live at the Warfield. It features the second set of the show, with Santana sitting in on every song. Each of the four songs in the second set segued into one another, in addition, a bonus track, The Way I Feel, was taken from the first set of the show and also includes Santana sitting in. Santana also sat in for the song Last Tube during the first set, highlights include a 27-minute Mr. Completely and an experimental version of Duke Ellingtons Caravan. Treys main band, Phish, covered Caravan frequently between 1990 and 1996, after which time it was dropped from their repertoire and this was the first time that TAB had covered Caravan. All proceeds from the sale of the DVDs of this show were distributed to the The Waterwheel Foundation and this show was part of the brief tour TAB did in between Phishs winter and summer tours in 2003. Other guests during this tour included Mike Gordon and Warren Hayes and this show was also one of the few times during this tour that Trey did not perform any solo acoustic songs. For the encore, TAB played Root Down by the Beastie Boys for the first time, Santana did not sit in for the song. In the summer of 1992, Phish was the act for Santana. In July 1996, Phish was booked as the act for Santana for three shows in Europe. Phishs opening set was rained out during the first of these shows, Phish would also come on stage during Santanas set during the subsequent two shows, along with playing their own opening sets. Trey and Phish keyboardist Page Mcconnell sat in with Santanas band in April 1999 in San Francisco, the next time any member of Phish and Santana collaborated was at the TAB show at the Warfield in 2003. This is also the last time they have collaborated, Mr. Completely> -27,00 John The Revelator> -8,22 Night Speaks To A Woman> -12,33 Caravan -4,43 The Way I Feel -3,02
