Season 1917–18 was the 41st Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 19th time.

Overview[edit]

Dumbarton's 8th place finish in the Scottish League with 34 points (22 behind champions Rangers) was their best performance since the 1893-94 season.[1]

Locally, Dumbarton re-entered the Dumbartonshire Cup, but lost out to Clydebank in the final. However Dumbarton went one better in the Dumbartonshire Charity Cup, retaining the trophy for the second successive year by beating Renton in the final.

During the season two other charity matches were played, both being won, scoring 8 goals for the loss of 4.

* Alexander Thom's appearance in the league match against Rangers on 29 September was his 140th competitive match for the club - overtaking Johnny Hill's record set in 1912.
* The league match against Clydebank on 13 October marked John Miller's 100th appearance for Dumbarton in all national competitions - the 13th Dumbarton player to reach this milestone.
* The final of the Dumbartonshire Cup was held over until 7 September the following season.
* This was the fourth season of war-time football, where the playing of all national competitions, other than the Scottish League, were suspended.
