Season 1921–22 was the 45th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 23rd time and the Scottish Cup for the 34th time.

Overview[edit]

Dumbarton's ninth consecutive season in the First Division showed a slight improvement in the previous season's performance by finishing 20th out of 22 with 30 points, some way behind champions Celtic. Unfortunately this was to co-incide with the introduction of automatic promotion/relegation, and Dumbarton were relegated to Division Two for the following season.[1]

In the Scottish Cup, Dumbarton were knocked out in the first round by Aberdeen.

Locally, Dumbarton won both the Dumbartonshire Cup and the Dumbartonshire Charity Cup by defeating Dumbarton Harp (after a replay) and Clydebank (on corners won) respectively.

Elsewhere, at the end of the season Dumbarton embarked on their first 'official' foreign tour, playing 8 matches in Norway and Sweden, winning 5, drawing 1 and losing 2, scoring 15 goals for the loss of 11. Two other friendlies were played against Vale of Leven and Leith Athletic.

Transfers[edit]

Amongst those players joining and leaving the club were the following:[4]

Factfile[edit]

* At the beginning of the season, Paddy Travers replaced James Collins as team manager.
* The league match against Rangers on 12 November was to be Dumbarton's young goalkeeper, Joshua Wilkinson's last. Tragically, in what was a particularly rough match, he was badly injured and died two days later in hospital.

Reserve Team[edit]

Dumbarton Reserves played in the Scottish Alliance League and also in the Scottish Second XI Cup.
