Tommy Hughitt

Tommy Hughitt was a National Football League utility player, coach and politician. He was also an All-American quarterback for the University of Michigan in 1913, Hughitt was born in Genoa, British Columbia, but grew up in Escanaba, Michigan, his father, Orrin Hughitt, owned the hardware store in Escanaba. His high school career in Escanaba was undistinguished, and Hughitt saw little playing time on his high school squad. Upon graduation he went to the University of Michigan, where he played halfback, from 1915 to 1916, Hughitt was the head football coach at the University of Maine. He compiled a 6–7–3 overall record, including the Maine Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in 1915, Hughitt showed the effectiveness of the Yost system of coaching by developing a bunch of green material, a tam which staged a real comeback after a bad start last year. Maine is highly pleased with the work of Hughitt and has engaged him for this season, after experiencing a winless season in 1916, Hughitt left his coaching position in Maine and signed with the Youngstown Patricians of the Ohio League, turning professional as a player-coach. When the Prospects joined the ranks of the APFA in 1920 and he retired from football in 1924, shortly after acquiring a stake in his team. After Hughitts departure, he handed over the reins of the franchise to Walter Koppisch, after his time in the NFL, Hughitt remained in the City of Buffalo and legally changed his name to Tommy for the purpose of making his name recognizable as he entered politics. In 1937, he served for a term of four years on the Buffalo Common Council, in the private sector, Hughitt ran a Ford dealership in the Buffalo area for many years. He died while on vacation in Bartow, Florida and was buried in Buffalo and he was elected to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. The National Football League is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. The NFL is one of the four professional sports leagues in North America. The NFLs 17-week regular season runs from the week after Labor Day to the week after Christmas, with each team playing 16 games, the NFL was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL agreed to merge with the American Football League in 1966, and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of that season, the merger was completed in 1970. Today, the NFL has the highest average attendance of any sports league in the world and is the most popular sports league in the United States. S. The NFLs executive officer is the commissioner, who has authority in governing the league. The team with the most NFL championships is the Green Bay Packers with thirteen, the current NFL champions are the New England Patriots, who defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34–28 in Super Bowl LI. Another meeting held on September 17,1920 resulted in the renaming of the league to the American Professional Football Association, the league hired Jim Thorpe as its first president, and consisted of 14 teams. Only two of these teams, the Decatur Staleys and the Chicago Cardinals, remain, the first event occurred on September 26,1920 when the Rock Island Independents defeated the non-league St. Paul Ideals 48–0 at Douglas Park. On October 3,1920, the first full week of league play occurred, the following season resulted in the Chicago Staleys controversially winning the title over the Buffalo All-Americans. In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League, in 1932, the season ended with the Chicago Bears and the Portsmouth Spartans tied for first in the league standings. This method had used since the leagues creation in 1920. The league quickly determined that a game between Chicago and Portsmouth was needed to decide the leagues champion. Playing with altered rules to accommodate the playing field, the Bears won the game 9–0. Fan interest in the de facto championship game led the NFL, beginning in 1933, the 1934 season also marked the first of 12 seasons in which African Americans were absent from the league. The de facto ban was rescinded in 1946, following public pressure, the NFL was always the foremost professional football league in the United States, it nevertheless faced a large number of rival professional leagues through the 1930s and 1940s. Rival leagues included at least three separate American Football Leagues and the All-America Football Conference, on top of regional leagues of varying caliber. Buffalo (NFL)

Buffalo, New York had a turbulent, early-era National Football League team that operated under multiple names and several different owners between the 1910s and 1920s. The franchise, which was experiencing problems in 1928, did not participate in league play that season. Buffalo operated a professional football circuit from at least the late 1800s onward. Among notable predecessors to the team discussed here were the Buffalo Oakdales, whose heyday was in the years 1908 and 1909 and these teams played each other and teams from nearby cities. The All-Stars played from 1915 to 1917 under the leadership of Eugene F. Dooley, in 1917, Dooley, along with Barney Lepper, took the team on a barnstorming tour of midwestern pro football teams. In 1918, the teams were not allowed to play outside the area because of the 1918 flu pandemic, Dooley. Shoe salesman Warren D. Patterson, at the time as this, formed a new team known as the Buffalo Niagaras. As the Niagaras, the team won a championship in 1918, going undefeated with a 6–0–0 record. The two teams tied the Thanksgiving Day game, but Buffalo handily defeated Rochester 20–0 the following Sunday, Patterson held on to the Prospects name and put together a lower quality team that played through 1923, including a 1922 game against the All-Americans themselves. Like the 1990s-era Buffalo Bills seven decades later, the 1918–21 All-Americans team is considered one of the best professional teams to have never won an NFL championship. Even though they didnt officially win any championships, there are two championships that are disputable, in 1920 and 1921, unique for a professional football team, the All-Americans had a sharing agreement with the Union Club of Phoenixville, a side project managed by All-Americans player Heinie Miller. Miller would take himself and seven other All-Americans to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to play games on Saturdays, five All-Americans left the team to play for the Quakers full-time, Buffalo had the pickings of the then-defunct Detroit Tigers to replenish their roster. In 1920, the Akron Pros held the Buffalo All-Americans to a tie in front of only 3,000 fans. At the game, Akron owners, Frank Nied and Art Ranney agreed to sell Bob Nash to Buffalo for $300 and five per cent of the gate, along with the Decatur Staleys and Akron Pros, Buffalo claimed a share of the 1920 league title. That same season the Pros held the best record in the league, meanwhile, Buffalo and the Staleys had to win in order to capture the AFPA Championship. The Pros were able to hold the Staleys to a tie at Cub Park. However the Pros still had to play the All-Americans who were fresh from a 7–3 win over the Canton Bulldogs at New York Citys Polo Grounds, despite Buffalos confidence going into the match, the Pros also held the All-Americans to scoreless tie. Both the All-Americans and the Staleys complained about the championship, arguing that Akron had only tied, however, Joseph Carr moved at the leagues meeting in April 1921 to give Akron the sole title and the rights to the Brunswick-Balke Collender Cup

Columbus Panhandles

The Columbus Panhandles were a professional American football team based in Columbus, Ohio. The club was founded in 1901 by workers at the Panhandle shops of the Pennsylvania Railroads and they were a part of the Ohio League from 1904 before folding after one season. The Panhandles are credited with playing in the first NFL game against another NFL opponent and they have zero NFL championships, but Joseph Carr, the teams owner from 1907 to 1922, is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his work as NFL president. The earliest existence of the Panhandles was in 1900, the Columbus Press-Post reported Jack Walsh creating the Panhandle railroad team consisting of big hardy railroad men, no other articles in 1900 were written about the Panhandles. A game was scheduled for October 19 of next year, however, in 1901, managed by William Butler of the Ohio Medical University, the Panhandles played two games against the Columbus Barracks, a team consisting of local soldiers. The results were split, the first was a 2–6 loss while the second was a 12–6 win, Butler left the Panhandles for unknown reasons, and the new manager for the 1902 season was Harry Greenwood. Greenwood placed advertisements in every newspaper he could in order to schedule games against local opponents and his ad read The Panhandle Athletic Club has organized a football team and would like to play any college, high school or manufacturing team on Saturday or Sunday. As a result, the Panhandles scheduled four games in 1902, again, the Panhandles got a new manager for the 1903 season, E. E. Griest. Griest needed help with the team, so he hired Ben Chamberlain to coach the team, after an exhibition game against the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Panhandles won their first game of the season, a 38–0 victory over Neil Avenue Athletic Club. This victory gave the team some unexpected press, the Columbus Citizen wrote the first article praising the team, the Panhandles 1903 season ended with a 5–3 record. In 1904, Joseph Carr, who was a writer for the Ohio State Journal and manager of the railroads baseball team the Famous Panhandle White Sox. However the Panhandles didn’t take off and the team played just two games, Carr tried again three years later in 1907. One of the first things Carr did when he became the owner of the Panhandles was to one the railroads policies. Since most of the players were employed by the railroad. Because of this perk, Carr was able to schedule mostly road games, eliminating the expenses of stadium rental, game promotion, and security for the field. However, while the team did play the majority of their games on the road as a traveling team, the Panhandles adopted an amateur sandlot mentality for their playing style. Since the team was composed mainly of workers, the scenario gave the players limited time to practice. The Panhandles did the majority of their preparation during their lunch breaks, workers had a one-hour break during a normal workday, and the players on the team usually took the first 15 minutes to eat lunch and used the remaining 45 minutes to practice football

Dayton Triangles

The Dayton Triangles were an original franchise of the American Professional Football Association in 1920. The Triangles were based in Dayton, Ohio, and took their nickname from their field, Triangle Park. They were the longest-lasting traveling team in the NFL, and the last such road team until the Dallas Texans in 1952, the original Dayton Triangles members first began playing together as basketball players at St. Marys College, now the University of Dayton, from 1908 until 1912. After graduation, the organized a basketball team of alumni, students. They went by the name of the St. Marys Cadets, the Cadets claimed the title of World Basketball Champions by defeating the Buffalo German Ramblers In the fall of 1913, the St. Marys Cadets organized a football team. The team was coached by Louis Clark, who coached the St. Marys college football team as well, Al Mahrt was elected team captain. The team finished their first season with a 7–0 record and won the Dayton City Championship and they also won the Southern Ohio Championship by defeating the Cincinnati Celts 27 to 0 at Redland Park. The team won a city championship in 1914, despite injuries to Al Mahrt. In 1915 the team changed its name to the Dayton Gym-Cadets after their presumed sponsors and that season saw Al Marhrt take over as the teams coach. The team only lost one game that season, to the Columbus Panhandles and they also won their third city championship. Storck would later become the manager, while Bud Talbott. The teams name was changed to the Dayton Triangles that season. In 1916, the Triangles went 9–1, defeating teams from Cincinnati, Detroit, Toledo, the Canton Bulldogs, with the legendary Jim Thorpe in the line-up, claimed the Ohio League Championship after their win over the Massillon Tigers. The Triangles challenged the Bulldogs to a game on December 10,1916, the following season saw the Triangles move into their new park, Triangle Park. The teams 1917 campaign was successful, the team went 6–0–2 that season. The Triangles were able to score 188 points and gave up only 13 to their opponents, in 1918 saw the United States entry in World War I, as well as a devastating Spanish flu pandemic. This allowed the Triangles to keep a team on the field and they claimed an Ohio League Championship. The Triangle player-coach that season was Earle Greasy Neale, since Bud Talbott joined the army, during their championship run, the Triangles defeated future NFL teams, the Toledo Maroons, Hammond Pros, Columbus Panhandles and Detroit Heralds

Akron Pros
–
The Akron Pros were a professional football team that played in Akron, Ohio from 1908 to 1926. Fritz Pollard, the first black coach in the NFL. Paul Robeson played for the team in 1921 as well and he was among the earliest stars of professional football, before football became segregated from 1934 to 1946. In 1926, the name was changed back to the Akron Indians, due to financial problems, the team suspended operations in 1927 and surrendered its franchise the following year. Prior to 1908, several semi-pro and amateur teams dominated the Akron football scene, the most dominant of these was a team known as the Akron East Ends. The East Ends dominance of Ohio football went unmatched until the Massillon Tigers paid several ringers from the recently disbanded Pittsburgh Stars to defeat the East Ends in 1903, the Akron Indians date as far back as 1908. The early Indians teams went on to win Ohio League championships in 1908,1909,1913 and 1914, the team was always referred to as the Indians by the fans. From 1908–1913, the Indians had a reputation of playing more of a style of football seen at the level than that of the early athletic clubs. For example, the Indians preferred passing the ball as opposed to running. The team tied for the Akron city title in 190 Before the 1912 season, Peggy Parratt, a football star with the Massillon Tigers, Franklin Athletic Club. He made the move realizing that he could make more money in the large football market that Akron provided. When he arrived in Akron, his first move was to change the name from the Akron Indians to Parratts Indians. With Peggy as player, coach, and owner-manager, the Indians split their series with Shelby and twice defeated Canton, however they were defeated by the unheard of Elyria Athletics, who then took the Ohio championship. The Athletics were mostly former Blues players who formed a team in Elyria after Parratt left for Akron, the following season, Parratt brought most of Elyrias 1912 championship team to Akron, and adding them to his roster. The Indians then beat Shelby and Elyria and they also managed to tie the rapidly improving Canton Pros. However, the game was cancelled due to snowstorm, a week later when the Blues returned to Akron, the Indians were prepared with newly recruited talent that was viewed as even superior to that of Shelbys. The Indians won the game 20–0 and brought the Ohio title back to Akron, for his 1914 recruiting efforts, Parratt signed the usual big-name players, which consisted of a lineup that changed from week to week, with just enough stars on hand to guarantee a win. By late season, the left side of his Akron Indian line was from Notre Dame

Frankford Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets won the NFL championship in 1926. The team played its games from 1923 in Frankford Stadium in Frankford. The Frankford Athletic Association was organized in May 1899 in the parlor of the Suburban Club, the cost of purchasing a share in the association was $10. However, there were also contributing memberships, ranging from $1 to $2.50, the Association was a community-based non-profit organization of local residents and businesses. In keeping with its charter, which stated that all profits shall be donated to charity, the beneficiaries of this generosity included Frankford Hospital, the Frankford Day Nursery, the local Boy Scouts, and the local American Legion Post 211. The officers of the Association never received a salary or compensation for their work on behalf of the team, the associations clubhouse was originally located at the current site of Frankford High School. The field at this site, known as Wistar Field, became the first official home of the Yellow Jackets, several years later, when the construction of the current high school was proposed, the team moved to Browns Field. The Association initially fielded a team, however soccer and football clubs were also formed. The original Frankford Athletic Association apparently disbanded prior to the 1909 football season, several of the original players from the 1899 football team kept the team together, and they became known as Loyola Athletic Club. In keeping with Yellow Jackets tradition, they carried the Frankford name again in 1912, in the early 1920s, the Frankford Athletic Associations Yellow Jackets gained the reputation as being one of the best independent football teams in the nation. In 1922, Frankford absorbed the Philadelphia City Champion team, the Union Quakers of Philadelphia and that year Frankford captured the unofficial championship of Philadelphia. During the 1922 and 1923 seasons the Yellow Jackets compiled a 6–2–1 record against teams from the National Football League and this led to the Association being granted an NFL franchise in 1924. The Yellow Jackets assembled in September 1924 under coach Punk Berryman to begin preparing for the upcoming season, the team included players Harry Dayhoff, Russ Stein, Joe Spagna, Whitey Thomas, Al Bedner, and Bob Jamison. The team often played 15 to 20 games a season, frequently, they would schedule two games on the same weekend, typically one at home on Saturday and, because of Pennsylvanias blue laws, an away game on Sunday. In their very first game as a member of the NFL, Frankford finished the season with an overall record of 17–3–1, with an 11–2–1 record in league play. They finished third in league standings only behind the Cleveland Bulldogs and Chicago Bears, under modern standings tabulation procedures, after a 9–0–1 start, Frankford lost several key players, including Chamberlin, to injuries. After a 49–0 defeat to the Pottsville Maroons, Frankfords captain Bull Behman was suspended indefinitely from the team for indifferent play and he was accused of not giving his best during the past few weeks because of some dissension with other players. The move helped improve the team, which posted a 13–7 record in league play, the Yellow Jackets had a part in the 1925 NFL Championship controversy

1924 Chicago Bears season

The 1924 Chicago Bears season was their fifth regular season completed in the National Football League. The club posted a 6–1–4 league record under head coach George Halas earning them a finish in the team standings. The Bears started slow with 2 ties and a loss, but quickly gained their stride, the Bears only loss of the year was to the Cleveland Bulldogs, the eventual champions. Despite coming in second, the Bears did defeat the cross-town rival Cardinals twice, the Sternaman brothers again carried the team, with Joe Sternaman having his best season. The younger Sternaman scored 6 touchdowns, threw for another, had 9 field goals, and 12 PATs, finishing with 75 of the Bears 136 points

1920 Buffalo All-Americans season

The 1920 Buffalo All-Americans season was the franchises inaugural season with the American Professional Football Association, an American football league, and fifth total as a team. The All-Americans entered 1920 coming off a 9–1–1 record in 1919 as the Buffalo Prospects in the New York Pro Football League, several representatives from another professional football league, the Ohio League, wanted to form a new national league, and thus the APFA was created. Buffalo reshaped itself for the 1920 season, only two players from the 1919 season stayed, and the team went into new management. Tommy Hughitt became the new coach, and Frank McNeil became the new owner, the All-Americans opened the season with a 32–6 victory over the local semi-pro team West Buffalo, en route to a 9-win, 1–loss, 1-tie record. Its only loss of the season was a 3–0 game against the Canton Bulldogs, a meeting was held by the officials of the APFA to determine a winner, with each coach having a vote. The All-Americans stated their cases, they believed they should deserve the trophy because they had the most wins and were undefeated against the Akron Pros. The officials, however, awarded the Brunswick-Balke Collender Cup to the Akron Pros because they had a 1.000 winning percentage, had standings been counted as they are as of today, the All-Americans would be co-champions. The sportswriter Bruce Copeland compiled the 1920 All-Pro list, but no players from the All-Americans were on it and that is because Copeland wrote for the Rock Island Argus and did not see any players from the easternmost teams in the league. As of 2012, no player from the 1920 All-Americans has been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in the 1919 season, the franchise was named the Buffalo Prospects, and finished with a 9–1–1 in the NYPFL. As a result, they won the New York Championship, after the 1919 season, the Prospects went under new management, and the name was changed to the All-Americans. Tommy Hughitt became the coach, and several players from the 1919 squad left, of the 33 players on the 1919 team, only Barney Lepper and Tommy Hughitt remained on the team for the 1920 season. At the meeting, they agreed on a salary cap. They also agreed on a name for the circuit, the American Professional Football Conference and they then invited other professional teams to a second meeting on September 17. Representatives of the All-Americans and Rochester Jeffersons could not attend the meeting, Team representatives changed the leagues name slightly to the American Professional Football Association and elected officers, installing Jim Thorpe as president. Under the new structure, teams created their schedules dynamically as the season progressed. Buffalo, New York

Buffalo is a city in western New York state and the county seat of Erie County, on the eastern shores of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River. As of 2014, Buffalo is New York states 2nd-most populous city after New York City, the metropolitan area has a population of 1.13 million. After an economic downturn in the half of the 20th century, Buffalos economy has transitioned to sectors that include financial services, technology, biomedical engineering. Residents of Buffalo are called Buffalonians, the citys nicknames include The Queen City, The Nickel City and The City of Good Neighbors. The city of Buffalo received its name from a creek called Buffalo Creek. British military engineer Captain John Montresor made reference to Buffalo Creek in his journal of 1764, there are several theories regarding how Buffalo Creek received its name. In 1804, as principal agent opening the area for the Holland Land Company, Joseph Ellicott, designed a radial street and grid system that branches out from downtown like bicycle spokes similar to the street system he used in the nations capital. Although Ellicott named the settlement New Amsterdam, the name did not catch on, during the War of 1812, on December 30,1813, Buffalo was burned by British forces. The George Coit House 1818 and Samuel Schenck House 1823 are currently the oldest houses within the limits of the City of Buffalo, on October 26,1825, the Erie Canal was completed with Buffalo a port-of-call for settlers heading westward. At the time, the population was about 2,400, the Erie Canal brought about a surge in population and commerce, which led Buffalo to incorporate as a city in 1832. In 1845, construction began on the Macedonia Baptist Church, an important meeting place for the abolitionist movement, Buffalo was a terminus point of the Underground Railroad with many fugitive slaves crossing the Niagara River to Fort Erie, Ontario in search of freedom. During the 1840s, Buffalos port continued to develop, both passenger and commercial traffic expanded with some 93,000 passengers heading west from the port of Buffalo. Grain and commercial goods shipments led to repeated expansion of the harbor, in 1843, the worlds first steam-powered grain elevator was constructed by local merchant Joseph Dart and engineer Robert Dunbar. Darts Elevator enabled faster unloading of lake freighters along with the transshipment of grain in bulk from barges, canal boats, by 1850, the citys population was 81,000. At the dawn of the 20th century, local mills were among the first to benefit from hydroelectric power generated by the Niagara River, the city got the nickname City of Light at this time due to the widespread electric lighting. It was also part of the revolution, hosting the brass era car builders Pierce Arrow. President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded by an anarchist at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6,1901, McKinley died in the city eight days later and Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in at the Wilcox Mansion as the 26th President of the United States. Walter Koppisch

Walter Frederic Wally Koppisch was an American football halfback in the National Football League for the Buffalo Bisons and New York Giants. At 23 years old, Koppisch, a celebrity and high school football star, was named the head coach of the Buffalo Bisons. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981, while playing high school ball at Masten Park High, now City Honors School, in Buffalo, New York. While there, he led his team to three consecutive Harvard Cup championships, which denoted Buffalo city champions, upon graduation, Koppisch went on to star at Columbia University, where he captained the Lions for three seasons. While playing Columbias backfield, Koppisch was teammates with, future New York Yankee, in 1924 he was received All-American honors by Walter Camp. In September 1925, it was announced that Koppisch would be returning to Buffalo to coach the Buffalo Bisons and he was only 23 years-old at the time, making him one of the youngest head coaches in NFL history. However the newly established New York Giants, were seeking a player which they could build a team around. However, according to Harry March, in his book Pro Football, Its Ups and Downs, while expectations were high for the Bison in 1925, the reality was that the team needed to undergo a rebuilding process. Many of the top players from the previous season had left the team. These players included mainstays Tommy Hughitt, Benny Boynton, Pete Calac, upon assuming the job of coach, Koppisch implemented the same system that was in use at Columbia University, by coach Frank Buck ONeill, with himself as the offenses focal point. Meanwhile, the new players consisted of stand-out collegians, but not one of them an All-American, at one point the Buffalo Evening News reported on several leaks, concerning the Bisons roster. According to the News, the story was to be kept under wraps until an approved by Koppisch. However the News reportedly saw the story published in a rival newspaper. The News maintained that it was Koppisch who broke the agreement by leaking the story to the rival newspaper, as a result, Koppisch removed the News reporter from training camp. The News carried its grudge against the Bisons for the entire season, the Bisons 1925 season, ended with a 1-6-2 record. The team began the season with losses against the Frankford Yellow Jackets. They then posted scoreless ties against the Rochester Jeffersons and Akron Pros, during the Rochester game, Koppisch and Jim Kendrick, made huge runs on offense. However the Jeffersons defense stopped the Bisons from scoring, meanwhile, during the Akron showdown, the Bison defense held future Hall of Famer, Fritz Pollard in check throughout the game, allowing the Pros just seven first downs for the entire game

Dim Batterson

George Wilder Dim Batterson was an American football coach for high school, college and professional teams. At the turn of the century, in 1899,1900 and 1901, Batterson coached and played fullback for the Oakdales, during that time, he was considered one of the greatest backfield men in upstate New York. Besides the Oakdales, he played with the Elmwoods, Manhattan Athletic club, Erie Athletic club, around 1905, Batterson played for the Buffalo All-Stars, an early semi-pro football team, who would later evolve into the Buffalo All-Americans-Rangers-Bisons franchise. Batterson started his career at the high school level. He won four Buffalo City High School Championships while coaching at Masten Park High School including three consecutive in 1918,1919 and 1920, Batterson left the high school ranks in 1922 to become the football coach at the University at Buffalo. He lasted one year at the University winning only one game, Batterson then coached with the Buffalo Bisons and Rangers of the early National Football League. Batterson was first brought onto the team as an assistant coach by his student at Masten Park High, Walter Koppisch, in 1925. He was named the head coach at the start of the 1927 NFL season and was the first head coach in the teams history not to be a player-coach. Unfortunately, the 1927 season was a disaster, financial woes plagued the team from the start. The team lost 5 consecutive starts, bowing to Pottsville,22 to 0, Providence,5 to 0, New York Yankees,19 to 8, after the 5th straight humiliating defeat, Batterson resigned and the team disbanded. Batterson never coached in the NFL again leaving his career coaching record at 0 won, after retiring from coaching, Batterson was in the real estate business in the Buffalo suburb of Tonawanda, New York. He died at the age of 51 on December 5,1935 in Buffalo General Hospital due to complications from a hernia surgery and he was elected to Harvard Cup Hall of Fame in 2002. Canisius College /kəˈniːʃəs/ was founded in 1870 by members of the Society of Jesus from Germany and is named after St. Peter Canisius. It is a college in the Hamlin Park neighborhood of Buffalo, New York. One of 28 Jesuit institutions in the nation, Canisius offers 145 undergraduate majors and minors and around 35 master’s, the college sponsors 20 NCAA Division 1 Athletic teams and is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Canisius has its roots in the Jesuit community that arose from disputed ownership of St. Louis Church in Buffalo in 1851, Rev. Lucas Caveng, a German Jesuit, along with 19 families from St. Louis Church, founded St. Michaels Church on Washington St. The college followed, primarily for serving sons of German immigrants, along with the school in 1870, first at 434 Ellicott St. In 1913 construction of the Old Main building at 2001 Main St. was completed, the early presidents of the college were German Jesuits. Canisius offers more than 100 majors, minors, and special programs, in fall 2009, Canisius College introduced a new major in Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation. Other new majors include Creative Writing, Health and Wellness, with the George E. Canisius has on campus about 90 clubs and organizations, vetted by the Undergraduate Student Association and its Senators. The last day of classes was traditionally known as Quad Party until 2008 when a SWAT team was used to prevent underage drinking in and around the campus. The Canisius College Golden Griffins are composed of 16 teams including men and womens basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, Mens sports include baseball, ice hockey, and golf. Womens sports include volleyball and softball, in 2013, the mens ice hockey team won its first Atlantic Hockey Championship, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 2008, Canisius mens lacrosse won the MAAC tournament and earned its first bid to the NCAA Mens Lacrosse Championship tournament, the Womens Lacrosse team won MAAC Championships four years in a row. The 2008 Baseball team won its first regular season MAAC championship, with a 41-13 season, in 2013, the team won the MAAC Championship and received its first bid to the NCAA tournament. The Canisius College softball team won the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament for its 3rd consecutive title, in its rivalry with Niagara University Canisius won the Canal Cup two of the first three years. Intramural sports are offered for students, faculty, and staff. Canisius mascot is the Golden Griffin, the use of a griffin arose from the fact that Robert de La Salle who explored Lake Erie in a ship named Le Griffon had received a Jesuit education. The college adopted the griffin in 1932, after Charles A. Brady wrote a story in a Canisius publication honoring Buffalos centennial year as a city, Brady wrote about Rene-Robert LaSalles Le Griffon, built here in Buffalo. The griffin was first used on the La Salle medal in 1932 and from there spread to the college newspaper and sports teams
