The Alvis Three Litre series IV, TF21, an updated version of the 1963 TE21, was the last car produced by Alvis Cars, having been announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966 it remained in production until 1967. Externally, the car was identical to the TE21, but there were some changes to the suspension, inside, the instruments were better organised; the 2993 cc engine, first used in the 1950 TA21, had its power increased to 150 bhp at 4750 rpm by fitting triple SU carburettors, giving the car a top speed of 120 mph. A choice of automatic or five-speed gearbox made by ZF was available; the chassis and suspension continued with front coil springs and leaf springs at the rear. Disc brakes were fitted to all wheels and recirculating ball-type steering gear was used with power assistance optional. Ronald Walter "Wally" Wallens was a Royal Air Force officer, who flew during the Battle of Britain and as such is one of "The Few". Wallens was educated at Worksop College. Wallens joined the Royal Air Force on a short service commission in 1937, he joined his first squadron No. 41 Squadron RAF at RAF Catterick on 26 March 1938. From August to October 1938 he undertook further flying training before rejoining the squadron, he was granted the rank of Pilot Officer in October 1939 and Flying Officer in July 1940. 41 Sqn joined the Battle of Britain in August 1940. On 8 August Wallens claimed 2 Bf 109s destroyed, one shared destroyed, he shared a Ju 88 on 11 August. On 5 September 1940 Wallens was shot down by a Messerschmitt Me 109 of JG 54 and wounded in action over the Thames Estuary. Wallens's flight was ordered to make a head-on attack on a large formation of Dornier 17 bombers with 50 plus Bf 109 escorts over Gravesend. Wallens considered the head-on assault "a desperate manoeuvre that could age one prematurely".
Within seconds ‘B’ Flight's six Spitfires were overwhelmed. Two were lost. Wallens broke away. Seeing two Bf 109's below him he destroyed one, he was lining up the second in his sights when he was attacked from above: The din was indescribable as the Bf 109's cannon and machine-gun fire tore great chunks out of my wings and blasted the cockpit. With his leg shattered by a shell, Wallens tried to bail out, he crash-landed four miles from his base at Hornchurch, smashing through a fence and hurdling a ditch before coming to rest in a hayfield. He found that one bullet had removed his helmet's right radio earphone and another the face from his wristwatch. Wallens had five. Wallens was hospitalised until April 1941. During his prolonged convalescence at the RAF Rehabilitation Unit, Wallens was much assisted by Dan Maskell known as a BBC tennis commentator, who ran the gymnasium. Wallens ordered to undertake further convalescence. Wallens was classified "Unfit for operational flying" in 1943 he was posted to No. 277 Air Sea Rescue Squadron at RAF Hawkinge, Kent.
He assumed command of the squadron in 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1944; the citation read: In the early phases of the war, Squadron Leader Wallens took part in a large number of sorties during which he destroyed at least 4 enemy aircraft. In combat in September, 1940, he was wounded in the leg by a cannon shell. Since his return to operational duties he has undertaken many air/sea rescue sorties and has been responsible for saving a number of personnel from the sea, he has set a splendid example of devotion to duty. In October 1946, Wallens transferred to the Special Duties Branch, he left the RAF in 1949. After the war he ran pubs and hotels. In 1990, Wallens published his autobiography Flying Made My Arms Ache, it contains an evocative account of the Battle of Britain. Started off well, but was to end in a terrible shambles. The Wisconsin Hoofers of the Wisconsin Union is a group of outdoor recreational clubs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, operated by the Wisconsin Union Directorate. The Wisconsin Hoofers was begun in 1920 by a group of Norwegian exchange students who built a ski jump on the UW-Madison campus by Lake Mendota; the club was called the Badger Ski Club. Porter Butts, the first director of the Memorial Union, was instrumental in establishing the Wisconsin Hoofers; the first Hoofers club, a skiing and outing club, was established in 1931, modeled after the Dartmouth Outing Club. The name "hoofers" is similar to the term "heelers" used for the new members of the Dartmouth club and was designed to imply "getting there under your own power." In 1976 Hoofers listed over 5,600 members. The emblem of the club in its current form is the capital "W" overlaid by the horseshoe; the Hoofer Sailing Club operates at Memorial Union, on the south shoreline of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus.
It has a fleet of more than 120 boats and kites. The club has had upwards of 1,500 members in the past, it is believed to be the second-largest inland sailing club in the country. The club has a highly-active instruction program, with thousands of lessons each season taught by paid and volunteer staff. Members have free access to use equipment after they have completed their instruction and earned a certification. In the winter months, the club has a snow-kiting program; the club hosts the University of Wisconsin undergraduate sailing team, nicknamed Wisco, which competes in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association. The sailing club originated in 1939 as an all-volunteer club whose members maintained boats and taught each other how to sail on wooden dinghies. Peter Barrett brought the first wooden Tech dinghy from M. I. T. in the 1950s, it became the club's signature boat. Peter and Olaf Harken modified M. I. T.'s fiberglass Tech design with air tanks under the gunwales, so that a capsized boat could be righted and come up dry, to create the Badger Tech dinghy.
The two brothers founded their first company, Vanguard Sailboats, to construct a fleet of these boats. The club has expanded to sail fifteen types of craft today; the club's largest boat is a Mull 34 racing yacht painted to resemble a Holstein cow. In 2003, it added a cruising sailing curriculum with the donation of Spray, a 30-foot cruising yacht, by a retired electrical engineering professor; the cruising program was popular, so in 2010, the club became an American Sailing Association-certified school. Started as the Badger Ski Club with three pairs of skis in 1931, the Ski and Snowboard club has grown to one of the largest clubs of its kind; the club plans a variety of ski and snowboard trips for University of Wisconsin students and union members, ranging from out west and local trips. It had been long-standing tradition that the club organize a 200+ person trip to Jackson Hole, during the university's spring break; the Club includes an Alpine Racing Team, Nordic Team, Freestyle Team. Several annual campus events are organized by the club such as the Rail Jam freestyle competition at Union South and ski and snowboard movie premieres.
Since 1963 the club has hosted a ski and snowboard resale every December, which has grown to be the largest in the Midwest. At the resale the local community can sell new or used ski and snowboard equipment. Hoofer Ski and Snowboard Club offers lessons to those who would like to learn to ski or ride or would like to improve their skills. Founded in 1945, the Outing Club combines a number of outdoor pursuits under a single umbrella club; the Outing club is an all-volunteer, student-run organization, though members need not be affiliated with the UW. The Outing Club is active year-round, with Interest Groups in Caving, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Telemark Skiing, XC Skiing, Whitewater Paddling, Flatwater Paddling, Hiking/Backpacking; the club owns a piece of undeveloped property referred to as "Hooferland" near Lakewood, WI, which it uses to stage various weekend trips throughout the year. The Outing Club was instrumental in developing the sport of whitewater paddling in Wisconsin in the 1960s, as it owned molds to build boats in its shop facilities in the basement of the Memorial Union.
In the late 1970s, club member Gordy Sussman started a small outfit in his rental house near campus to make group purchases of paddles, other equipment, to get discounts and save on shipping costs. He developed this operation into the Rutabaga Paddlesports shop, a successful local business that presents Canoecopia, claimed to be the world's largest paddlesports exposition. Dara Petak or Dara Pethak known in her formal name as Indreswari, was the consort of King Kertarajasa Jayawardhana, the founder of Majapahit kingdom. She was a Malay Dharmasraya princess from Sumatra and the only non-Javanese wife of Kertarajasa, the mother of Jayanegara, the second monarch of Majapahit. Tradition mentioned her as a woman of exceptional beauty; the name Dara Pethak in old Malay means "white dove", while her other name Indreswari in Sanskrit means "the consort of Indra" and it was acquired after her marriage to Majapahit first king. She was the daughter of King Srimat Tribhuwanaraja Mauliawarmadewa of Dharmasraya Kingdom in Sumatra, was sent to Java to be presented to Singhasari King; this Sumatran kingdom was held as vassal of Singhasari in 1286. According to Pararaton, ten days after the expulsion of Mongol forces from Java, the Pamalayu expedition led by Mahisa Anabrang returned to Java; the expedition was sent by Singhasari King Kertanegara in 1275 to conquer Sumatra. The returning Javanese troops brought two Malay princesses, Dara Jingga and Dara Petak to be presented for Kertanagara.
The two princesses was intended for Kertanagara, however because the Singhasari King has died, his heir Raden Wijaya took Dara Petak in hand of marriage instead, while her sister Dara Jingga was betrothed to Adwayabrahma, a Singhasari general that led the Sumatran expedition in 1286. Within Majapahit palace, Dara Petak cleverly pleases the king, won his favour and subsequently become the king's favourite consort, she acquired the most honored wife in the palace. According to Nagarakretagama, Raden Wijaya has four wives, Prajnaparamita, Narendra Duhita, Gayatri Rajapatni. According to Pararaton, Dara Petak was promoted to honorable title because she was the only wife that produced male heir for the king, prince Jayanegara. According to Nagarakretagama, the name of Jayanagara's mother is Indreswari, so it is assumed that this was the new official name of Dara Petak after her marriage to the king. In Kertarajasa inscription, Jayanegara was mentioned as the son of Tribhuwaneswari, the prime queen and first wife of Raden Wijaya.
To reconcile these records, historian suggested that Jayanegara is the son of Indreswari or Dara Petak that being adopted by the childless queen consort Tribhuwaneswari, in order to be promoted as the heir of the throne. The Red Willow County Courthouse is a historic building in McCook, which serves as the courthouse of Red Willow County, Nebraska. Two prior county courthouses were built in Indianola, Nebraska, in 1873 and 1880, followed by a third one in McCook, built in 1896; the current courthouse was built in 1926. It was designed by architect Marcus L. Evans in the Classical Revival style, with "symmetric arrangement, monumental proportions, smooth stone surface, prominent columns, unadorned parapet and ashlar finish, such classical elements as acroteria, fluted Doric columns and triglyphs." The Alfa Romeo 2000 is a luxury car produced by Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo between 1958 and 1962, as a successor to the 1900 Super. It was replaced in 1962 by the Alfa Romeo 2600; the 2000 was presented in 1957 with 4-door, 6-seater saloon Berlina body. Production started in 1958, the car was available as Berlina or Spider convertible. In 1960, the Sprint coupé was added; the 2000 Berlina had gearbox operated via column-mounted shifter making space for three people in front. The two grand touring versions had the gear lever located in floor, a higher output engine; until 1961, when 2+2-seater became available, the Spider was a pure two-seater. The 2000 Spider looked somewhat different in the United States from other markets: on European cars, the bonnet scoops were mounted apart from each other, rather than together and separated by a chrome piece as on American-market cars. European cars received twin chrome strips along the lower flanks, whereas US cars only have a single strip; the last 2000s were built in 1962, when the more powerful six-cylinder Alfa Romeo 2600 was phased in.
For the 1960 Turin Motor Show, Touring presented a one-off coupé variant of the 2000. Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni of Carrozzeria Touring was asked by Alfa Romeo to create this showcar on the first chassis type 102.05, s/n 001. That same type would underpin the production coupé version styled by Giugiaro; the car had four seats and sported quad headlamps. Interior featured; the "Praho" name was derived from the name of the fishing boats popular in Thailand and affiliated with the cars concave rear window. The car remained the only example made and the Sprint production went to Bertone instead; the 2000 used a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The engine was an enlarged version of the 1900´s inline-four displacing 1975 cc; the cast iron block and aluminium head engine produced 105 PS at 5300 rpm in Berlina using a single downdraft Solex carburettor, while the version on the Sprint and Spider produced 115 PS at 5700 rpm with two Solex sidedraft carburettors and a higher compression ratio.
Two chain-driven overhead camshafts operated two poppet valves per cylinder. Power was sent to the rear wheels with synchromesh on all forward speeds. Front wheel suspension was independent, with the rear used a solid axle. On all four wheels there were telescopic dampers. Brakes were drums, with a hydraulic system. Tyres 165HR400 Pirelli Cinturato CA67 Engines The four-door Berlina was manufactured by Alfa Romeo itself, while the Spider and Sprint were designed and bodied by independent coachbuilders Touring and Bertone. Being expensive but not fast, the 2000 was a slow seller, in particular the Berlina, outsold by the Spider; the more powerful 2600 which replaced the 2000 was better able to deal with more refined competitors such as the Lancia Flaminia. Between 1958 and 1961, Vignale built a series of coupés, penned by Giovanni Michelotti. All bore chassis type of different from the series production cars. Around 15 cars were made; the Brazilian variant of the 2000 was produced from 1960 to 1968 by Fábrica Nacional de Motores.
It had the same 1975 cc engine with 95 PS. The car used the name FNM "JK", JK standing for the president of Brazil Juscelino Kubitschek, the name was changed to FNM 2000. In 1966 two other models were introduced, the "Onça" coupe and the "2000 TiMB", which produced up to 160 PS; the TiMB had a flat bonnet, coupled with a divided front bumper necessary to accommodate the now lower-mounted Alfa Romeo centre grille. The FNM 2000 was replaced with FNM 2150 in 1969, it had a bigger engine and revised styling, using the smooth bonnet of the TiMB. For 1971 the 2150 was facelifted, with a more squat version of the traditional Alfa Romeo grille which allowed for a single-piece front bumper.
