Album

Album, is a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, audio tape, or another medium. Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century album sales have mostly focused on compact disc and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed live, the majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at times while listening to the other parts using headphones. Album covers and liner notes are used, and sometimes additional information is provided, such as analysis of the recording, historically, the term album was applied to a collection of various items housed in a book format. In musical usage the word was used for collections of pieces of printed music from the early nineteenth century. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, the LP record, or 33 1⁄3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, is a gramophone record format introduced by Columbia Records in 1948. It was adopted by the industry as a standard format for the album. Apart from relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound capability, the term album had been carried forward from the early nineteenth century when it had been used for collections of short pieces of music. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, as part of a trend of shifting sales in the music industry, some commenters have declared that the early 21st century experienced the death of the album. Sometimes shorter albums are referred to as mini-albums or EPs, Albums such as Tubular Bells, Amarok, Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield, and Yess Close to the Edge, include fewer than four tracks. There are no rules against artists such as Pinhead Gunpowder referring to their own releases under thirty minutes as albums. These are known as box sets, material is stored on an album in sections termed tracks, normally 11 or 12 tracks. A music track is a song or instrumental recording. The term is associated with popular music where separate tracks are known as album tracks. The Brian Jonestown Massacre

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American psychedelic rock band formed in San Francisco in 1990 and led by frontman Anton Newcombe. The band began as a group in San Francisco in 1990. Following their debut album, the group turned to a broader style of psychedelic rock, incorporating styles such as garage rock, folk rock and, later. The band was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig. and have gained notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships. The name Brian Jonestown Massacre is a portmanteau of The Rolling Stones founder and guitarist Brian Jones, the Brian Jonestown Massacres debut album, Spacegirl and Other Favorites was a vinyl only release in 1993 with a limited run of 500 copies. The album includes the song Hide and Seek, the single released from the album in 1994. The bands follow-up album, Methodrone, was influenced by the shoegaze genre that had gained prominence several years prior to its release. The albums dreamy rock sound is comparable to such as Galaxie 500, Spacemen 3. Two tracks from the album, She Made Me and Evergreen, had released as a double A-side single in 1992. The band went through a period of recording in 1996. Their Satanic Majesties Second Request reflects a pastiche of 1960s psychedelia that continues to characterize the present Brian Jonestown Massacre sound. The album also includes vast experimentation with a variety of different instrumentation including Indian drones, sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, the title of the album is a pastiche of The Rolling Stones 1967 album Their Satanic Majesties Request. The second album released in 1996, Take It from the Man. is rooted in rhythm and blues, the album includes the song Straight Up and Down which was later used as theme music for the television drama series Boardwalk Empire on the American cable network HBO. Thank God for Mental Illness is the third record released in 1996. The album explores genres such as country and rhythm and blues with vocals, the album is divided into two parts, with the first part featuring mostly acoustic lo-fi songs, whilst the latter half is a series of songs merged into one track named Sound of Confusion. Sound of Confusion features both songs and more abstract sound collages. The Brian Jonestown Massacre released Give It Back. in 1997, footage from the album sessions were included in the documentary Dig. Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth was featured on the soundtrack to Jim Jarmuschs 2005 film Broken Flowers, soon after the albums release, the Brian Jonestown Massacre signed a multi-record deal with TVT Records

Rock music

It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of genres such as electric blues and folk. Musically, rock has centered on the guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse-chorus form, like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. Punk was an influence into the 1980s on the subsequent development of subgenres, including new wave, post-punk. From the 1990s alternative rock began to rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop. Similarly, 1970s punk culture spawned the visually distinctive goth and emo subcultures and this trio of instruments has often been complemented by the inclusion of other instruments, particularly keyboards such as the piano, Hammond organ and synthesizers. The basic rock instrumentation was adapted from the blues band instrumentation. A group of musicians performing rock music is termed a rock band or rock group, Rock music is traditionally built on a foundation of simple unsyncopated rhythms in a 4/4 meter, with a repetitive snare drum back beat on beats two and four. Melodies are often derived from older musical modes, including the Dorian and Mixolydian, harmonies range from the common triad to parallel fourths and fifths and dissonant harmonic progressions. Critics have stressed the eclecticism and stylistic diversity of rock, because of its complex history and tendency to borrow from other musical and cultural forms, it has been argued that it is impossible to bind rock music to a rigidly delineated musical definition. These themes were inherited from a variety of sources, including the Tin Pan Alley pop tradition, folk music and rhythm, as a result, it has been seen as articulating the concerns of this group in both style and lyrics. Christgau, writing in 1972, said in spite of some exceptions, rock and roll usually implies an identification of male sexuality, according to Simon Frith rock was something more than pop, something more than rock and roll. Rock musicians combined an emphasis on skill and technique with the concept of art as artistic expression, original. The foundations of music are in rock and roll, which originated in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its immediate origins lay in a melding of various musical genres of the time, including rhythm and blues and gospel music, with country. In 1951, Cleveland, Ohio disc jockey Alan Freed began playing rhythm and blues music for a multi-racial audience, debate surrounds which record should be considered the first rock and roll record. Pitchfork is an American online magazine launched in 1995 by Ryan Schreiber, based in Chicago, Illinois and owned by Condé Nast. The site generally concentrates on new music, but Pitchfork journalists have also reviewed reissues, in late 1995, Ryan Schreiber, a recent high school graduate, created the magazine in Minneapolis. Influenced by local fanzines and KUOM, Schreiber, who had no writing experience. At first being Turntable, the site was updated monthly with interviews and reviews, in May 1996, the site began publishing daily and was renamed Pitchfork, alluding to Tony Montanas tattoo in Scarface. In early 1999, Schreiber relocated Pitchfork to Chicago, Illinois, by then, the site had expanded to four full-length album reviews daily, as well as sporadic interviews, features, and columns. It had also begun garnering a following for its coverage of underground music and its writing style. In October, the added a daily music news section. Pitchfork has launched a variety of subsidiary websites, Pitchfork. tv, a website displaying videos related to many independent music acts, launched in April 2008. It features bands that are found on Pitchfork. In July 2010, Pitchfork announced Altered Zones, a blog devoted to underground. On 21 May 2011, Pitchfork announced a partnership with Kill Screen, Altered Zones was closed on November 30. On December 26,2012, Pitchfork launched Nothing Major, a website that covered visual arts such as fine art, Nothing Major closed in October 2013. On October 13,2015, Condé Nast announced that it had acquired Pitchfork, following the sale, Schreiber remained as editor-in-chief. On March 13,2016, Pitchfork was redesigned, some publications have cited Pitchfork in having played a part in breaking artists such as Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Interpol, The Go. Conversely, Pitchfork has also seen as being a negative influence on some indie artists. A dismissive 0.0 review of former Dismemberment Plan frontman Travis Morrisons Travistan album led to a sales drop. On the other hand, an endorsement from Pitchfork – which dispenses its approval one-tenth of a point at a time, up to a maximum of 10 points – is very valuable, indeed. Anton Newcombe

Anton Alfred Newcombe is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, founder of the music group, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Besides his own group, Newcombe has worked with a number of bands, most notably The Dandy Warhols, The High Dials, The Manvils, Innaway, and The Quarter After. He recorded and produced Dead Meadows album Got Live if You Want It, Newcombe founded The Brian Jonestown Massacre in San Francisco, California, in 1990. Newcombe wrote the majority of songs, with Hollywood collaborating or contributing others on occasion until his departure in 1998, Newcombe was also heavily involved in the post-production of his albums, often engineering and mixing them on his own. A prolific artist, he authored over 150 songs in a fifteen-year period, Newcombe founded his own record label which has released albums by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Lovetones, and Dead Meadows. Many of the releases on this label are produced or engineered by Rob Campanella, in 2016 he composed the soundtrack for British indie film Moon Dogs, directed by Philip John. Newcombe no longer drinks alcohol, and is married and he lives in Berlin with his wife Katy and their son Wolfgang and actively works on his musical project. In recent years, Anton has mostly worked from his own recording studio in Berlin, where he produced albums for other artists, including Dead Meadow and remixed tracks for The Vacant Lots

Matthew J. Tow

Matthew J. Tow is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Perhaps best known as the singer and guitarist of 1990s Sydney indie band Drop City, Rolling Stone hailed Matthew J. Tows songwriting as being worthy of Ray Davies, Bowie, Lennon and McCartney. Matthews first experience as a recording artist came with early 1990s Sydney indie band Splash, the Tow-Mclean songwriting partnership would spill over onto early Drop City releases. Matthew formed Drop City in Sydney, Australia at the beginning of 1993, later that year they recorded their first album A Revolution Of Purely Private Expectations which was released on the Red Eye label through Polydor in 1994. Two more albums were to follow, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and, Drop City Discography, In 1994, Tow recorded a solo album You’re Only As Good As Your Sound under the moniker of Colorsound which was picked up by Summershine Records in Australia. The following year it was released in the US on Sub Pop and he has since released a further 4 albums in this guise. These releases are typically instrumental and far more experimental than Matthews other projects and he also contributed 2 songs to their 2003 album. And This is Our Music. Tows opening track Starcleaner later also appeared on the BJM retrospective Tepid Peppermint Wonderland, the Lovetones released their debut album, Be What You Want, in 2002 through Bomp. The album was reviewed in Creem and Rolling Stone magazine, the second album, Meditations, was released through New Yorks Tee Pee Records in late 2005. Returning from shows in the US in late 2005 and also at SXSW2006, the Lovetones performed a reunion show in Sydney on 31 July 2015. The Lovetones also recorded their album, Axiom, during 2006 with sessions split between Figment Studios in Hollywood and the Sydney Opera House Recording Studio. The new album was released in June 2007 through Tee Pee Records, the Lovetones Discography, Matthew is married and lives in Sydney, Australia

Ed Harcourt

Ed Harcourt is an English singer-songwriter. To date, he has released six albums, two EPs, and thirteen singles. His debut album, Here Be Monsters, was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Prize, since 2007 he has been writing for other artists, including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Paloma Faith and performed with Marianne Faithfull and the Libertines. His music is influenced by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Jeff Buckley, Harcourt was born Edward Henry Richard Harcourt-Smith on 14 August 1977, in Wimbledon, London, England. The youngest of three, Harcourt is the son of Maj. Charles Harcourt-Smith and a diplomat, and his wife Sabrina. He began to study piano at the age of nine and achieved grade 8 when he was 17 and he declined the offer to study music citing the idea of having to analyse, dissect and everything would completely destroy any enjoyment. Before going solo, Harcourt played the bass and keyboards for Snug, a band formed in the mid-1990s by Harcourt, James Deane, Ed Groves, the band recorded two albums and a handful of singles together before dissolving. In 2000, Harcourt recorded his debut mini-album Maplewood EP straight to a 4-track recorder at Wootton Manor, after signing with Heavenly Records and releasing Maplewood in November 2000, Harcourt recorded his debut studio album Here Be Monsters with producers Gil Norton and Tim Holmes. The album was released in June 2001, and charted on the UK Albums Chart at No.84, one month after its release, the album was nominated for the 2001 Mercury Prize. He later described the period as very strange for me, I was naive, I was used to making music in my room, so it felt very odd being on stage. In the US he signed with Capitol Records, following the non-album single release of the Brian Wilson cover Still I Dream of It in October 2002, Harcourt recorded and released his second album From Every Sphere in February 2003. The album became his highest-charting release in the UK, peaking at No.39, the album also performed moderately well across Europe, peaking at No.6 in Sweden, No.25 in Norway, and No.103 in France. From Every Sphere also yielded his highest-charting single to date, All of Your Days Will Be Blessed, a second single, Watching the Sun Come Up, was less successful, peaking at No.79. After a steady schedule of dates in the UK, Harcourts third album. The album peaked at No.57 in the UK and at No.7 in Sweden, and produced the singles This Ones for You, Born in the 70s, through 2005 Harcourt played some live dates with a side-project he called Wild Boar. In August 2005 the B-sides and rarities compilation Elephants Graveyard was released as a digital download. In the same year he performed at the annual Meltdown Festival in London and he was also part of the ensemble that performed the William Blake inspired Songs of Innocence. The album was not as successful on the UK charts, peaking at No.97 and he later described the release as the bête noire of the albums

Joseph Campanella

Joseph Anthony Campanella is an American character actor who has appeared in more than 200 television and film roles since the early 1950s. He had a role from 1959 to 1962 as a criminal named Joe Turino on the long-running CBS daytime drama The Guiding Light. He had a role in 1967 as Lew Wickersham in the television series Mannix as Joe Mannixs boss and friend, Campanella appeared as attorney Brian Darrell from 1969 to 1972 in The Bold Ones, The Lawyers. Campanella played Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department Captain Monty Ballard in the crime drama TV movie Sky Heist in 1975. He played Ann Romanos ex-husband, Ed Cooper, in eight episodes of One Day at a Time and Barbara Stanwycks love interest in the first season of Aaron Spellings short-lived Dynasty spinoff and he also appeared in a second-season episode of The Golden Girls as a detective. The actor had a prominent role as Harper Deveraux on the soap opera Days of Our Lives from 1987 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1992, and a role on The Bold. Campanella hosted the Canadian educational program Science International between 1976 and 1979, which aired on Nickelodeon as What Will They Think Of Next and he appeared in the independent comedy, For Heavens Sake. On Broadway, Campanella was featured in three productions and his first, The Captains and the Kings, opened in January 1962 and lasted only seven performances. In February 1962, he was cast in A Gift of Time with Henry Fonda, the show was written and directed by Garson Kanin, and Campanella received a Tony nomination as Best Featured Actor in a Play. His last Broadway performance was in the musical Hot Spot in 1963, the show was not well received and delayed its opening four times, resulting in a run of 58 previews and 43 regular performances. He formerly provided the voice-over for BMW commercials in the United States, intoning, for several years beginning in the 1970s, Campanella was a spokesman for Napa Auto Parts. His distinctive voice has been heard often in the narration of numerous documentaries, Campanella did the voice of Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard on Spider-Man, The Animated Series. He also narrated the Discover science series on the Disney Channel from 1992-1994, campanellas father, an immigrant from Sicily, was an early member of the American Federation of Musicians. Campanella himself served in the United States Navy during World War II and he later graduated from Manhattan College in 1948, and attended Columbia University. Peter Hayes (musician)

Peter Hayes, and is an American musician and singer. He is best known as a member of the rock band, Hayes grew up in Minnesota, and when 14 or 15 years old got into trouble and was grounded for over a year. During that time he began figuring out how to play his mothers guitar out of boredom and she taught him some flamingo and fingerpicking songs, which was influential for Hayes, as was the music of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. While in high school, Hayes met future bandmate Robert Levon Been, Hayes played guitar and bass for the neo-psychedelic rock band, The Brian Jonestown Massacre circa 1998. Examples of his playing can be heard on the groups Give It Back, Hayes appears as a highly visible, yet quiet musician in the 2004 movie documentary DiG. as an active touring member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The film also documents the befriended band The Dandy Warhols, peter Hayes is a founding and current member of the alternative rock trio, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Spindrift (band)

Spindrift is an American psychedelic rock band, created by singer-songwriter-composer-producer-actor Kirpatrick Thomas. Founded in 1992, the band originated in Newark, Delaware along with other local bands of the period including Jake. In the summer of 2001, band members Kirpatrick Thomas, Joe Baluta, the band re-formed to include Bobby Bones, Dave Koenig, Frankie Teardrop Emerson and Rob Campanella of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Jason “Plucky” Anchondo of The Warlocks. Inspired by their new locale, the band began a new stylistic approach evoking the spirit of the Old West as mythologized by Western Cinema, Spaghetti Westerns in particular. Tours with Dead Meadow, The Black Angels, and The Dandy Warhols followed until November 2009 when the band suffered a major change due to tour burnout. Spindrift also began incorporating these songs into their set and on occasion. This would prove to be an influence on their later years. In December 2009, Henry Evans and Kirpatrick Thomas began reforming and rebuilding Spindrift while rehearsing and writing new songs in the Gram Parsons death room at Joshua Tree Inn. Added were Luke Dawson on pedal steel and rhythm guitar, Sasha Vallely on vocals, organ, and Native American flute, and James Acton on autoharp, vocals, and drums. This current lineup performed at SXSW2010, Psych Fest III, supported Black Mountain, in December 2010 after a 7-week U. S. Tour and following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the band went in and tracked Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 at Hicksville Trailer Palace in Joshua Tree, in 2008, Spindrift contributed to the soundtrack of the feature film Hell Ride produced by Quentin Tarantino. The motion picture The Legend Of God’s Gun was inspired by the Spindrifts 2002 album of the name which was released three years prior to the making of the film. The movies soundtrack features work from that album as well as tracks by Gram Rabbit, the album, The Legend Of Gods Gun, was updated and re-released in 2007. Spindrift has also contributed to the VBS. tv VICE documentary series Coffin Joe, the band has also scored a restored version of Tecumsehs Curse, a film about the Curse of Tippecanoe by director J. X. Williams. In 2010, Spindrift went on to supply the score to Mike Bruces next feature Treasure of the Black Jaguar, Spindrift has cited the Sergio Leone film Once Upon a Time in the West and Sam Peckinpahs The Wild Bunch as cinematic influences on the bands music and overall style. In 2011, Spindrift supported the soundtrack of the award-winning skiing documentary film All. I. Can by Sherpa Cinema with three songs, the film, Dust Up, starring Amber Benson also contained a Spindrift score and was released Oct.2012. In Jan 2016, the band contributed to the score and soundtrack of the film Diablo which was Directed by Lawrence Roeck and starred Scott Eastwood, Danny Glover, and Walton Goggings. As well, early that year, Cherry Red Records released the 5 disc box set title Still In A Dream, in Spring of 2011, Spindrift released Classic Soundtracks Volume 1 on Xemu Records

The Warlocks

The Warlocks are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1998 by guitarist/singer Bobby Hecksher. The bands music has ranged from rock to drone music. There have been changes in personnel since their formation, with Hecksher the only constant member. The band was founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Bobby Hecksher, at the age of fifteen, Hecksher moved to Los Angeles from Florida with his family. Heckshers first instrument was cello, eventually moving on to bass guitar, Heckshers grandfather owned a radio station. The Warlocks played their first gig on July 4,1998, receiving comparisons with White Light/White Heat-era Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3, the band signed a two-album deal with renowned indie label Bomp. in October 2000. Supposedly signed in Heckshers blood, the contract with Bomp, yielded the bands debut release in 2000, the mini-album The Warlocks. This was followed by the release of their first full-length record, Rise and Fall, Rise and Fall received a four-and-a-half-star review from AllMusic, with Bryan Thomas describing it as a solid effort. Hecksher worked as a tester for DreamWorks until at least 2001. After the release of Rise and Fall the band split with Bomp. the EP Phoenix was released by Birdman in 2002 and was followed by a full-length album of the same name, which was also released in 2002, to positive acclaim. Phoenix included a collaboration with Peter Kember, of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum, shake the Dope Out and Baby Blue were also released as singles. The group toured the US and overseas with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Raveonettes, following Phoenix, The Warlocks signed to Mute and released Surgery in 2005, produced by Tom Rothrock. The record represents a departure from their psychedelic sound into dreamier pop territory. The songs on this record are shorter and more structured than some of their previous work, the band has criticized the final production of the record as having been too clean and polished in comparison to the original work the group had presented to the label with intent to release. The recording of Surgery was fraught with pressure from the label to produce a more radio-friendly album, come Save Us was released as a single. Prefix gave the album 8.0 out of 10, describing it as far more approachable than their earlier releases, the albums lack of commercial success led to the end of their deal with Mute. In the years after Surgery, the band toured internationally and sustained changes to the lineup, the album was, according to Hecksher, recorded over a single weekend, with the band members quitting afterwards. The album is considered darker than their previous work, with the band exploring a more experimental direction, a review in Spin described the album as funereal and sluggishly unrealised, while AllMusic called it uneven

Methodrone is the debut studio album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, released in 1995 by record label Bomp. The title of the album is a portmanteau of the methadone, used in treatment of heroin addiction. The albums dreamy rock sound is comparable to that of Spacemen 3. Methodrone is the album to feature vocalists Elise Dye and Paola Simmonds. Drummers Brian Glaze and Graham Bonnar were also brought into the line-up to replace Ricky Maymi who had begun playing bass in the band and it was also Graham Bonnars only appearance in the band. Take It from the Man. is the third studio album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The albums psychedelic rock has often been compared to the Rolling Stones. Records on May 28,1996, it is the first of three albums released by the band in 1996, preceding Their Satanic Majesties Second Request. The album was released to acclaim, with journalists praising the exuding of its influences. Newcombe has since named the album as one of his favorites by the band, the album has featured in several best of lists and has been cited by several musicians as an influence. Looking for a change in direction, and under the influence of 1960s British rock music, the band soon began work on Take it from the Man. In the liner notes, Newcombe jokingly recalls the conception, I, Anton A. Newcombe, do solemnly swear that the ghost of Brian Jones came to me in the studio. He also asked that I kick the shit out of old Mick and Keith for ripping off his band, girl and money, having him murdered, being glad hes dead, according to the liner notes, Take it from the Man. The band initially recorded Take it from the Man. With an unnamed producer who, in wanting to get on board, recorded the album and chopped it up to make it like so perfect and then requested 3% of the royalties, leading the band to just in his face. As a result, the producer, as Newcombe recalled it, got so pissed, I was like, Fuck you dude. Then Im gonna kick your ass the minute I see you on the street and he did end up destroying it but I let him off the hook as far as the violence. The album was recorded on a minimal budget, and he said, Well, these are for the drums… and I was like, We dont need sixteen mics for the drums. Im gonna use three mics for the drums and were gonna record it live, all at once, were just gonna put all the guitar amps down the hallway, the drums will be in here, and well put on headphones and well just play our set. We record everything the way, so thats what we did and then at the end he whipped out all of these effects when mixing at his studio and I just asked him. And he said, You cant have it sound the same on every song and Im like Bullshit, thats the charm of this, we just try, Newcombe noted that Straight Up and Down was mixed to cassette. The band were recording their follow up album Their Satanic Majesties Second Request concurrently with Take it from the Man, although not in the same studio or with the same producer. It was released on June 18,1996 by record label Tangible, records, and is the second of three full-length albums released by the band that year. Their Satanic Majesties Second Request was recorded in 1995 at Bloody Angle Studios, the albums title and music is influenced by The Rolling Stones 1967 album Their Satanic Majesties Request. Their Satanic Majesties Second Request reveals vast experimentation with Indian drones, sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, following in the footsteps of Keith Richards and Brian Jones, BJM capture and explore the psychedelic rock sound of the late 1960s. Thank God for Mental Illness is the fifth studio album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. After releasing Take It from the Man.36, the album shows another musical palette for the group, taking influence from country blues and psychedelic folk music, with one review calling it an incredibly strange acoustic venture. Released on October 25,1996 by record label Bomp. it was the third, the album title was lead singer Anton Newcombes personal jab at personal insults towards himself. The album was acclaimed and was hailed for, among numerous points, its lo-fi quality. Several critics drew out comparisons to Bob Dylan, after spending 1995 signing to Bomp. and Their Satanic Majesties Second Request respectively from 1995–1996, both of which were then released in mid-1996. The album only cost $17.36 to record, a sum that Newcombe paid for entirely, the liner notes state the album was recorded in tangible lo-fi custom stereo in order to keep the faith. The very small budget has entered legendary status, with Tiny Mix Tapes recalling of the recording sessions, during that week, the group would virtually camp out in the studio and in that short amount of time, somehow manage to record an entire album. This album was that formula on steroids, legend has it that this album was recorded in one day. This album came during the middle of a time when the put out six albums in four short years. The antithesis of Sean Lennons recording style, so to speak, marking another direction for the band, Thank God for Mental Illness has been described as an acoustic-based, psychedelic lo-fi album taking strong influences from country, blues, and folk. Under the Radar described the album as Dylan-esque, whilst Pitchfork Media more specifically described Newcombes performance on the album as busker-Dylan esque. Debaser detected another influence in the roots of the Californian rock of the sixties, noting the influence of Skip Spence, Quicksilver Messenger Service. Newcombes singing is often plaintive through the album, with mawkish synthetic texts, debaser said that Sound of Confusion is to the band what Sister Ray is to the Velvet Underground, saying the comparison is certainly not unreasonable. Opening song Spanish Bee was described by Tiny Mix Tapes as a dramatic number that eases nicely into the rest of the album. It Girl features a stylish Spaghetti Western vibe,13 was described by Tiny Mix Tapes as one of the funniest tracks. Because people – my mom, whoever – always said, Youre insane, so it was a jab at that whole thing. Give It Back. is the sixth studio album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, released in 1997 by record label Bomp. Notably, this is the album that features Peter Hayes. The sessions for the record were filmed for the documentary Dig, the latter song includes a sample of The Dandy Warhols song Be-In, the opening track from their. The Dandy Warhols Come Down album. On the DVD commentary for Dig, matt Hollywood claims that he wrote the song in a tongue-in-cheek manner towards The Dandy Warhols, and goes on to discuss how Anton even borrowed elements of The Dandy Warhols sound. This refutes the popular opinion that the song was a scathing, literal attack, allMusic reviewer Richie Unterberger wrote of the album, about half of this is run-of-the-mill pseudo-60s garage/psych with too many indulgent guitar breaks. Strung Out in Heaven is the seventh full-length album by American psychedelic rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was released in June 1998 and was the bands first and only recording with the independent label. After releasing a number of well-received recordings on the smaller psychedelia-focused Bomp, Records label, The Brian Jonestown Massacre were signed to a multi-record deal with TVT. Matt Hollywood contributed more to record due to Anton Newcombe being incapable of writing as many songs as he was addicted to heroin at the time. The album is named after a lyric from the David Bowie song Ashes to Ashes, wisdom is a re-recording of the same song that originally appeared on the bands second album, Methodrone. Dawn is also a re-recording, with the version appearing on Take It from the Man. Spun is also a re-recording of the song that appears on the bands album Thank God for Mental Illness. The recording didnt sell as many records as TVT had hoped, love was released as a CD single, with a demo of Wasting Away as a B-side on TVT Records in 1998. Love and Nothing to Lose was also released as a double A-side single independently in 1997, the release featured Lets Pretend Its Summer, Ive Been Waiting, The Devil May Care and an alternate version of Ive Been Waiting as B-sides. Head Heritage described it as BJMs most easily accessible and truly genius album thus far, the song Going to Hell is featured in the Faith, Hope & Trick episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, in an interview, Anton mentioned that the word bloody is used in place of the word fucking. Rough mixes of many of the songs from the sessions were first made available on the bands MySpace page and my Bloody Underground contains more experimental sounds than previous BJM albums, especially with a collaboration with Mark Gardener, formerly of Ride, who co-wrote the song Monkey Powder. The album is a more avant-garde approach to producing and recording, the space rock/neo-psychedelia sound of the album can be attributed to Newcombes large intake of psychedelic drugs and adopting a no talking in the studio policy while recording. An extended play is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered less expensive, an EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, EPs—originally extended-play single releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk, in the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks. EPs were released in various sizes in different eras, the earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as 2-in-1 records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records, by 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 33 1⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side. Partly as an attempt to compete with the LP introduced in 1948 by rival Columbia, RCA Victor introduced Extended Play 45s during 1952. Their narrower grooves, achieved by lowering the levels and sound compression optionally. These were usually 10-inch LPs split onto two seven-inch EPs or 12-inch LPs split onto three seven-inch EPs, either separately or together in gatefold covers. This practice became less common with the advent of triple-speed-available phonographs. Some classical music albums released at the beginning of the LP era were distributed as EP albums—notably the seven operas that Arturo Toscanini conducted on radio between 1944 and 1954. These opera EPs, originally broadcast on the NBC Radio network and manufactured by RCA, in the 1990s, they began appearing on compact discs. During the 1950s, RCA published several EP albums of Walt Disney movies and these usually featured the original casts of actors and actresses. Each album contained two seven-inch records, plus an illustrated booklet containing the text of the recording, so that children could follow along by reading. Some of the titles included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and what was then a recent release, because of the popularity of 7 and other formats, SP records became less popular and the production of SPs in Japan was suspended in 1963. In the 1950s and 1960s, EPs were usually compilations of singles or album samplers and were played at 45 rpm on seven-inch discs. Record Retailer printed the first EP chart in 1960, the New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Disc and Music Echo and the Record Mirror continued to list EPs on their respective singles charts. The Beatles Twist and Shout outsold most singles for some weeks in 1963, when the BBC and Record Retailer commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile a chart it was restricted to singles and EPs disappeared from the listings. In the Philippines, seven-inch EPs marketed as mini-LPs were introduced in 1970, with tracks selected from an album and this mini-LP format also became popular in America in the early 1970s for promotional releases, and also for use in jukeboxes

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is an American rock band from San Francisco, California. The group consists of Peter Hayes, Robert Levon Been, former drummer Nick Jago left the band in 2008 to focus on his solo project. They have released seven albums, B. R. M. C. Take Them On, On Your Own, Howl, Baby 81, The Effects of 333, Beat the Devils Tattoo, and Specter at the Feast, as well as several EPs, and live albums. They are influenced by such as, Lou Reed, The Verve, The Rolling Stones, T. Rex, The Velvet Underground, The Call, Love and Rockets, Daniel Ash. The band was formed in 1998, originally called The Elements, after discovering that another band had the same name, the members changed the name to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, after Marlon Brandos motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One. Robert has said in interviews that Peter had a turbulent home life and would park, after about a year of doing this, Robert and his father Michael finally persuaded Peter to live with them. Later, the pair started looking for a drummer and they met Nick Jago, from Devon, England, who had moved to California to be with his parents after spending some time at Winchester School of Art, where he was studying fine art. The vocals are shared between Been and Peter Hayes and their second album Take Them On, On Your Own has several songs such as Generation and US Government that are critical of the United States government. Been used the pseudonym Robert Turner on the first two records, in a not to be linked to his father. He later dropped this identity when promoting Howl, the senior Been later toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as part of their sound crew. This led to the band sometimes being referred to as the band who broke the floor, problems with drummer Nick Jago began surfacing publicly at the 2003 NME Awards, when Jago remained on stage for nine minutes, completely silent, while accepting an award. At the 2004 V Festival, Hayes walked out when asked to sign an inflatable penis, after conflict with their record label, the band was dropped by Virgin Records in 2004. Jagos conflicts came to a head in Scotland, when Jago, as such, Jago did not take part in the sessions for the bands third album, Howl. Instead, he went through various rehab attempts, eventually rejoining the band in time to one track. In 2005, the band signed to Echo in the UK, Howl was released to mostly favorable reviews. The Dandy Warhols is an American rock band, formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994 by singer-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and guitarist Peter Holmström. Keyboardist Zia McCabe and drummer Eric Hedford joined them, Hedford left in 1998 and was replaced by Taylor-Taylors cousin Brent DeBoer. The bands name is a play on the name of American pop artist Andy Warhol, the band gained recognition after they were signed to Capitol Records and released their major label album debut. The Dandy Warhols Come Down, in 1997. In 2001, the rose to new levels of fame after their song Bohemian Like You enjoyed extensive exposure thanks to it being featured in a Vodafone advertisement. The Dandy Warhols have released ten albums to date. The band was formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994 by Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Taylor-Taylor described the bands beginning as a group of friends who needed music to drink to. The Dandy Warhols performed in bars throughout Portland and became known for their nudity-filled live shows. At their first gig in 1994, they were approached by Tim/Kerr Records, the result was 1995s Dandys Rule OK, which combined elements of 1960s garage rock, the then-popular BritPop genre, and some of the earlier shoegaze music approach. Dandys Rule OK impressed Capitol Records, who decided to sign the band and it was their second attempt at a follow-up album, after their first attempt was rejected by Capitol, who claimed it didnt have any hits. Three singles were released for Come Down, all of which entered the Top 40 in the UK charts, in 1998, drummer Eric Hedford left the band after a dispute over royalties, and was replaced by Taylor-Taylors cousin Brent DeBoer. In 2000, the released their third studio album, Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. It was a critical and commercial success, mainly due to the single Bohemian Like You being featured in a popular Vodafone advertisement, the song was also featured in the DreamWorks/Aardman animated movie Flushed Away in a chase scene. The album featured a matured, less sound, with less overt psychedelia. Around this time, Taylor-Taylor took out a loan to acquire an industrial space in NW Portland, dubbed The Odditorium. The Odditorium is the bands rehearsal space and recording and mixing studio. It also serves as an art space and clubhouse for parties and it opened on November 15,2001. Becoming a fan of the band after seeing them play at the Glastonbury Festival in 2000, Bowie and the Dandy Warhols played a rendition of White Light/White Heat together as an encore to the July 29 gig, which was billed as The New Heathens Night. The band also supported David Bowie on his 2003 A Reality Tour, in September 2001, the band began work on their next studio album
