A circle is a simple closed shape. It is the set of all points in a plane; the distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius. This article is about circles in Euclidean geometry, and, in particular, the Euclidean plane, except where otherwise noted. A circle is a simple closed curve that divides the plane into two regions: an interior and an exterior. In everyday use, the term "circle" may be used interchangeably to refer to either the boundary of the figure, or to the whole figure including its interior. A circle may be defined as a special kind of ellipse in which the two foci are coincident and the eccentricity is 0, or the two-dimensional shape enclosing the most area per unit perimeter squared, using calculus of variations. A circle is a plane figure bounded by one line, such that all right lines drawn from a certain point within it to the bounding line, are equal; the bounding line is called the point, its centre. Annulus: a ring-shaped object, the region bounded by two concentric circles.
Arc: any connected part of a circle. Specifying two end points of an arc and a center allows for two arcs that together make up a full circle. Centre: the point equidistant from all points on the circle. Chord: a line segment whose endpoints lie on the circle, thus dividing a circle in two sements. Circumference: the length of one circuit along the circle, or the distance around the circle. Diameter: a line segment whose endpoints lie on the circle and that passes through the centre; this is the largest distance between any two points on the circle. It is a special case of a chord, namely the longest chord for a given circle, its length is twice the length of a radius. Disc: the region of the plane bounded by a circle. Lens: the region common to two overlapping discs. Passant: a coplanar straight line that has no point in common with the circle. Radius: a line segment joining the centre of a circle with any single point on the circle itself. Sector: a region bounded by two radii of equal length with a common center and either of the two possible arcs, determined by this center and the endpoints of the radii.
Segment: a region bounded by a chord and one of the arcs connecting the chord's endpoints. The length of the chord imposes a lower boundary on the diameter of possible arcs. Sometimes the term segment is used only for regions not containing the center of the circle to which their arc belongs to. Secant: an extended chord, a coplanar straight line, intersecting a circle in two points. Semicircle: one of the two possible arcs determined by the endpoints of a diameter, taking its midpoint as center. In non-technical common usage it may mean the interior of the two dimensional region bounded by a diameter and one of its arcs, technically called a half-disc. A half-disc is a special case of a segment, namely the largest one. Tangent: a coplanar straight line that has one single point in common with a circle. All of the specified regions may be considered as open, that is, not containing their boundaries, or as closed, including their respective boundaries; the word circle derives from the Greek κίρκος/κύκλος, itself a metathesis of the Homeric Greek κρίκος, meaning "hoop" or "ring".
The origins of the words circus and circuit are related. The circle has been known since before the beginning of recorded history. Natural circles would have been observed, such as the Moon, a short plant stalk blowing in the wind on sand, which forms a circle shape in the sand; the circle is the basis for the wheel, with related inventions such as gears, makes much of modern machinery possible. In mathematics, the study of the circle has helped inspire the development of geometry and calculus. Early science geometry and astrology and astronomy, was connected to the divine for most medieval scholars, many believed that there was something intrinsically "divine" or "perfect" that could be found in circles; some highlights in the history of the circle are: 1700 BCE – The Rhind papyrus gives a method to find the area of a circular field. The result corresponds to 256/81 as an approximate value of π. 300 BCE – Book 3 of Euclid's Elements deals with the properties of circles. In Plato's Seventh Letter there is a detailed explanation of the circle.
Plato explains the perfect circle, how it is different from any drawing, definition or explanation. 1880 CE – Lindemann proves that π is transcendental settling the millennia-old problem of squaring the circle. The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is π, an irrational constant equal to 3.141592654. In mathematics, a manifold is a topological space that locally resembles Euclidean space near each point. More each point of an n-dimensional manifold has a neighbourhood, homeomorphic to the Euclidean space of dimension n. In this more precise terminology, a manifold is referred to as an n-manifold. One-dimensional manifolds include circles, but not figure eights. Two-dimensional manifolds are called surfaces. Examples include the plane, the sphere, the torus, which can all be embedded in three dimensional real space, but the Klein bottle and real projective plane, which will always self-intersect when immersed in three-dimensional real space. Although a manifold locally resembles Euclidean space, meaning that every point has a neighbourhood homeomorphic to an open subset of Euclidean space, globally it may not: manifolds in general are not homeomorphic to Euclidean space. For example, the surface of the sphere is not homeomorphic to the Euclidean plane, because it has the global topological property of compactness that Euclidean space lacks, but in a region it can be charted by means of map projections of the region into the Euclidean plane.
When a region appears in two neighbouring charts, the two representations do not coincide and a transformation is needed to pass from one to the other, called a transition map. The concept of a manifold is central to many parts of geometry and modern mathematical physics because it allows complicated structures to be described and understood in terms of the simpler local topological properties of Euclidean space. Manifolds arise as solution sets of systems of equations and as graphs of functions. Manifolds can be equipped with additional structure. One important class of manifolds is the class of differentiable manifolds. A Riemannian metric on a manifold allows angles to be measured. Symplectic manifolds serve as the phase spaces in the Hamiltonian formalism of classical mechanics, while four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds model spacetime in general relativity. A surface is a two dimensional manifold, meaning that it locally resembles the Euclidean plane near each point. For example, the surface of a globe can be described by a collection of maps, which together form an atlas of the globe.
Although no individual map is sufficient to cover the entire surface of the globe, any place in the globe will be in at least one of the charts. Many places will appear in more than one chart. For example, a map of North America will include parts of South America and the Arctic circle; these regions of the globe will be described in full in separate charts, which in turn will contain parts of North America. There is a relation between adjacent charts, called a transition map that allows them to be patched together to cover the whole of the globe. Describing the coordinate charts on surfaces explicitly requires knowledge of functions of two variables, because these patching functions must map a region in the plane to another region of the plane. However, one-dimensional examples of manifolds can be described with functions of a single variable only. Manifolds have applications in computer-graphics and augmented-reality given the need to associate pictures to coordinates. In an augmented reality setting, a picture can be seen as something associated with a coordinate and by using sensors for detecting movements and rotation one can have knowledge of how the picture is oriented and placed in space.
After a line, the circle is the simplest example of a topological manifold. Topology ignores bending, so a small piece of a circle is treated the same as a small piece of a line. Consider, for instance, the top part of the unit circle, x2 + y2 = 1, where the y-coordinate is positive. Any point of this arc can be uniquely described by its x-coordinate. So, projection onto the first coordinate is a continuous, invertible, mapping from the upper arc to the open interval: χ t o p = x; such functions along with the open regions they map are called charts. In mathematics, a plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface that extends infinitely far. A plane is the two-dimensional analogue of a line and three-dimensional space. Planes can arise as subspaces of some higher-dimensional space, as with a room's walls extended infinitely far, or they may enjoy an independent existence in their own right, as in the setting of Euclidean geometry; when working in two-dimensional Euclidean space, the definite article is used, so, the plane refers to the whole space. Many fundamental tasks in mathematics, trigonometry, graph theory, graphing are performed in a two-dimensional space, or, in other words, in the plane. Euclid set forth the first great landmark of mathematical thought, an axiomatic treatment of geometry, he selected a small core of undefined terms and postulates which he used to prove various geometrical statements. Although the plane in its modern sense is not directly given a definition anywhere in the Elements, it may be thought of as part of the common notions.
Euclid never used numbers to measure angle, or area. In this way the Euclidean plane is not quite the same as the Cartesian plane. A plane is a ruled surface; this section is concerned with planes embedded in three dimensions: in R3. In a Euclidean space of any number of dimensions, a plane is uniquely determined by any of the following: Three non-collinear points. A line and a point not on that line. Two distinct but intersecting lines. Two parallel lines; the following statements hold in three-dimensional Euclidean space but not in higher dimensions, though they have higher-dimensional analogues: Two distinct planes are either parallel or they intersect in a line. A line intersects it at a single point, or is contained in the plane. Two distinct lines perpendicular to the same plane must be parallel to each other. Two distinct planes perpendicular to the same line must be parallel to each other. In a manner analogous to the way lines in a two-dimensional space are described using a point-slope form for their equations, planes in a three dimensional space have a natural description using a point in the plane and a vector orthogonal to it to indicate its "inclination".
Let r0 be the position vector of some point P0 =, let n = be a nonzero vector. The plane determined by the point P0 and the vector n consists of those points P, with position vector r, such that the vector drawn from P0 to P is perpendicular to n. Recalling that two vectors are perpendicular if and only if their dot product is zero, it follows that the desired plane can be described as the set of all points r such that n ⋅ = 0. Expanded this becomes a + b + c = 0, the point-normal form of the equation of a plane; this is just a linear equation a x + b y + c z + d = 0, where d = −. Conversely, it is shown that if a, b, c and d are constants and a, b, c are not all zero the graph of the equation a x + b y + c z + d = 0, is a plane having the vector n = as a normal; this familiar equation for a plane is called the general form of the equation of the plane. Thus for example a regression equation of the form y = d + ax + cz establishes a best-fit plane in three-dimensional space when there are two explanatory variables.
Alternatively, a plane may be described parametrically as the set of all points of the form r = r 0 + s v + t w, where s and t range over all real numbers, v and w are given linearly independent vectors defining the plane, r0 is the vector representing the position of an arbitrary point on the plane. The vectors v and w can be visualized as vectors starting at r0 and pointing in different directions along the plane. Note that v and w can be perpendicular, but cannot be parallel. A perimeter is a path that surrounds a two-dimensional shape. The term may be used either for the path itself or its length—it can be thought of as the length of the outline of a shape; the perimeter of a circle or ellipse is called its circumference. Calculating the perimeter has several practical applications. A calculated perimeter is the length of fence required to surround a garden; the perimeter of a wheel describes. The amount of string wound around a spool is related to the spool's perimeter; the perimeter is the distance around a shape. Perimeters for more general shapes can be calculated, as any path, with ∫ 0 L d s, where L is the length of the path and d s is an infinitesimal line element. Both of these must be replaced with by algebraic forms in order to be calculated. Polygons are fundamental to determining perimeters, not only because they are the simplest shapes but because the perimeters of many shapes are calculated by approximating them with sequences of polygons tending to these shapes. The first mathematician known to have used this kind of reasoning is Archimedes, who approximated the perimeter of a circle by surrounding it with regular polygons; the perimeter of a polygon equals the sum of the lengths of its sides. In particular, the perimeter of a rectangle of width w and length ℓ equals 2 w + 2 ℓ. An equilateral polygon is a polygon. To calculate the perimeter of an equilateral polygon, one must multiply the common length of the sides by the number of sides. A regular polygon may be characterized by the number of its sides and by its circumradius, to say, the constant distance between its centre and each of its vertices; the length of its sides can be calculated using trigonometry. If R is a regular polygon's radius and n is the number of its sides its perimeter is 2 n R sin .
A splitter of a triangle is a cevian that divides the perimeter into two equal lengths, this common length being called the semiperimeter of the triangle. The three splitters of a triangle all intersect each other at the Nagel point of the triangle. A cleaver of a triangle is a segment from the midpoint of a side of a triangle to the opposite side such that the perimeter is divided into two equal lengths; the three cleavers of a triangle all intersect each other at the triangle's Spieker center. The perimeter of a circle called the circumference, is proportional to its diameter and its radius; that is to say, there exists a constant number pi, π, such that if P is the circle's perimeter and D its diameter P = π ⋅ D. In terms of the radius r of the circle, this formula becomes, P = 2 π ⋅ r. To calculate a circle's perimeter, knowledge of its radius or diameter and the number π suffices; the problem is that π is not rational, nor is it algebraic. So, obtaining an accurate approximation of π is important in the calculation.
The computation of the digits of π is relevant to many fields, such as mathematical analysis and computer science. The perimeter and the area are two main measures of geometric figures. Confusing them is a common error, as well as believing that the greater one of them is, the greater the other must be. Indeed, a commonplace observation is that an enlargement of a shape make its area grow as well as its perimeter. For example, if a field is drawn on a 1/10,000 scale map, the actual field perimeter can be calculated multiplying the drawing perimeter by 10,000; the real area is 10,0002 times the area of the shape on the map. There is no relation between the area and the perimeter of an ordinary shape. F
In mathematics, a curve is speaking, an object similar to a line but that need not be straight. Thus, a curve is a generalization of a line. Various disciplines within mathematics have given the term different meanings depending on the area of study, so the precise meaning depends on context. However, many of these meanings are special instances of the definition. A curve is a topological space, locally homeomorphic to a line. In everyday language, this means that a curve is a set of points which, near each of its points, looks like a line, up to a deformation. A simple example of a curve is the parabola, shown to the right. A large number of other curves have been studied in multiple mathematical fields. A closed curve is a curve that forms a path whose starting point is its ending point—that is, a path from any of its points to the same point. Related meanings include the graph of a function and a two-dimensional graph. Interest in curves began; this can be seen in numerous examples of their decorative use in art and on everyday objects dating back to prehistoric times.
Curves, or at least their graphical representations, are simple to create, for example by a stick in the sand on a beach. The term line was used in place of the more modern term curve. Hence the phrases straight line and right line were used to distinguish what are today called lines from curved lines. For example, in Book I of Euclid's Elements, a line is defined as a "breadthless length", while a straight line is defined as "a line that lies evenly with the points on itself". Euclid's idea of a line is clarified by the statement "The extremities of a line are points,". Commentators further classified lines according to various schemes. One reason was their interest in solving geometrical problems that could not be solved using standard compass and straightedge construction; these curves include: The conic sections studied by Apollonius of Perga The cissoid of Diocles, studied by Diocles and used as a method to double the cube.
The conchoid of Nicomedes, studied by Nicomedes as a method to both double the cube and to trisect an angle. The Archimedean spiral, studied by Archimedes as a method to trisect an angle and square the circle; the spiric sections, sections of tori studied by Perseus as sections of cones had been studied by Apollonius. A fundamental advance in the theory of curves was the advent of analytic geometry in the seventeenth century; this enabled a curve to be described using an equation rather than an elaborate geometrical construction. This not only allowed new curves to be defined and studied, but it enabled a formal distinction to be made between curves that can be defined using algebraic equations, algebraic curves, those that cannot, transcendental curves. Curves had been described as "geometrical" or "mechanical" according to how they were, or could be, generated. Conic sections were applied in astronomy by Kepler. Newton worked on an early example in the calculus of variations. Solutions to variational problems, such as the brachistochrone and tautochrone questions, introduced properties of curves in new ways.
The catenary gets its name as the solution to the problem of a hanging chain, the sort of question that became accessible by means of differential calculus. In the eighteenth century came the beginnings of the theory of plane algebraic curves, in general. Newton had studied the cubic curves, in the general description of the real points into'ovals'; the statement of Bézout's theorem showed a number of aspects which were not directly accessible to the geometry of the time, to do with singular points and complex solutions. Since the nineteenth century there has not been a separate theory of curves, but rather the appearance of curves as the one-dimensional aspect of projective geometry, differential geometry; the era of the space-filling curves provoked the modern definitions of curve. In general, a curve is defined through a continuous function γ: I → X from an interval I of the real numbers into a topological space X. Depending on the context, it is either γ or its image γ, called a curve. In general topology, when non-differentiable functions are considered, it is the map γ, called a curve, because its image may look differently from what is called a curve.
For example, the image of the Peano curve fills the square. On the other hand, when one considers curves defined by a differentiable function, this is the image of the function, called a curve; the curve is said to be simple, or a Jordan arc, if γ is injective, i.e. if for all x, y in I, we have γ = γ
In plane geometry, an angle is the figure formed by two rays, called the sides of the angle, sharing a common endpoint, called the vertex of the angle. Angles formed by two rays lie in a plane. Angles are formed by the intersection of two planes in Euclidean and other spaces; these are called dihedral angles. Angles formed by the intersection of two curves in a plane are defined as the angle determined by the tangent rays at the point of intersection. Similar statements hold in space, for example, the spherical angle formed by two great circles on a sphere is the dihedral angle between the planes determined by the great circles. Angle is used to designate the measure of an angle or of a rotation; this measure is the ratio of the length of a circular arc to its radius. In the case of a geometric angle, the arc is delimited by the sides. In the case of a rotation, the arc is centered at the center of the rotation and delimited by any other point and its image by the rotation; the word angle comes from the Latin word angulus, meaning "corner".
Both are connected with the Proto-Indo-European root *ank-, meaning "to bend" or "bow". Euclid defines a plane angle as the inclination to each other, in a plane, of two lines which meet each other, do not lie straight with respect to each other. According to Proclus an angle must be a relationship; the first concept was used by Eudemus. In mathematical expressions, it is common to use Greek letters to serve as variables standing for the size of some angle. Lower case Roman letters are used, as are upper case Roman letters in the context of polygons. See the figures in this article for examples. In geometric figures, angles may be identified by the labels attached to the three points that define them. For example, the angle at vertex A enclosed by the rays AB and AC is denoted ∠BAC or B A C ^. Sometimes, where there is no risk of confusion, the angle may be referred to by its vertex. An angle denoted, say, ∠BAC might refer to any of four angles: the clockwise angle from B to C, the anticlockwise angle from B to C, the clockwise angle from C to B, or the anticlockwise angle from C to B, where the direction in which the angle is measured determines its sign.
However, in many geometrical situations it is obvious from context that the positive angle less than or equal to 180 degrees is meant, no ambiguity arises. Otherwise, a convention may be adopted so that ∠BAC always refers to the anticlockwise angle from B to C, ∠CAB to the anticlockwise angle from C to B. An angle equal to 0° or not turned is called a zero angle. Angles smaller than a right angle are called acute angles. An angle equal to 1/4 turn is called a right angle. Two lines that form a right angle are said to be orthogonal, or perpendicular. Angles larger than a right angle and smaller than a straight angle are called obtuse angles. An angle equal to 1/2 turn is called a straight angle. Angles larger than a straight angle but less than 1 turn are called reflex angles. An angle equal to 1 turn is called complete angle, round angle or a perigon. Angles that are not right angles or a multiple of a right angle are called oblique angles; the names and measured units are shown in a table below: Angles that have the same measure are said to be equal or congruent.
An angle is not dependent upon the lengths of the sides of the angle. Two angles which share terminal sides, but differ in size by an integer multiple of a turn, are called coterminal angles. A reference angle is the acute version of any angle determined by subtracting or adding straight angle, to the results as necessary, until the magnitude of result is an acute angle, a value between 0 and 1/4 turn, 90°, or π/2 radians. For example, an angle of 30 degrees has a reference angle of 30 degrees, an angle of 150 degrees has a reference angle of 30 degrees. An angle of 750 degrees has a reference angle of 30 degrees; when two straight lines intersect at a point, four angles are formed. Pairwise these angles are named according to their location relative to each other. A pair of angles opposite each other, formed by two intersecting straight lines that form an "X"-like shape, are called vertical angles or opposite angles or vertically opposite angles, they are abbreviated as vert. opp. ∠s. The equality of vertically opposite angles is called the vertical angle theorem.

Euclidean geometry is a mathematical system attributed to Alexandrian Greek mathematician Euclid, which he described in his textbook on geometry: the Elements. Euclid's method consists in assuming a small set of intuitively appealing axioms, deducing many other propositions from these. Although many of Euclid's results had been stated by earlier mathematicians, Euclid was the first to show how these propositions could fit into a comprehensive deductive and logical system; the Elements begins with plane geometry, still taught in secondary school as the first axiomatic system and the first examples of formal proof. It goes on to the solid geometry of three dimensions. Much of the Elements states results of what are now called algebra and number theory, explained in geometrical language. For more than two thousand years, the adjective "Euclidean" was unnecessary because no other sort of geometry had been conceived. Euclid's axioms seemed so intuitively obvious that any theorem proved from them was deemed true in an absolute metaphysical, sense.
Today, many other self-consistent non-Euclidean geometries are known, the first ones having been discovered in the early 19th century. An implication of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity is that physical space itself is not Euclidean, Euclidean space is a good approximation for it only over short distances. Euclidean geometry is an example of synthetic geometry, in that it proceeds logically from axioms describing basic properties of geometric objects such as points and lines, to propositions about those objects, all without the use of coordinates to specify those objects; this is in contrast to analytic geometry, which uses coordinates to translate geometric propositions into algebraic formulas. The Elements is a systematization of earlier knowledge of geometry, its improvement over earlier treatments was recognized, with the result that there was little interest in preserving the earlier ones, they are now nearly all lost. There are 13 books in the Elements: Books I–IV and VI discuss plane geometry.
Many results about plane figures are proved, for example "In any triangle two angles taken together in any manner are less than two right angles." and the Pythagorean theorem "In right angled triangles the square on the side subtending the right angle is equal to the squares on the sides containing the right angle." Books V and VII–X deal with number theory, with numbers treated geometrically as lengths of line segments or areas of regions. Notions such as prime numbers and rational and irrational numbers are introduced, it is proved. Books XI–XIII concern solid geometry. A typical result is the 1:3 ratio between the volume of a cone and a cylinder with the same height and base; the platonic solids are constructed. Euclidean geometry is an axiomatic system, in which all theorems are derived from a small number of simple axioms; until the advent of non-Euclidean geometry, these axioms were considered to be true in the physical world, so that all the theorems would be true. However, Euclid's reasoning from assumptions to conclusions remains valid independent of their physical reality.
Near the beginning of the first book of the Elements, Euclid gives five postulates for plane geometry, stated in terms of constructions: Let the following be postulated:To draw a straight line from any point to any point. To produce a finite straight line continuously in a straight line. To describe a circle with any centre and distance; that all right angles are equal to one another.: That, if a straight line falling on two straight lines make the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles are less than two right angles. Although Euclid only explicitly asserts the existence of the constructed objects, in his reasoning they are implicitly assumed to be unique; the Elements include the following five "common notions": Things that are equal to the same thing are equal to one another. If equals are added to equals the wholes are equal. If equals are subtracted from equals the differences are equal.
Things that coincide with one another are equal to one another. The whole is greater than the part. Modern scholars agree that Euclid's postulates do not provide the complete logical foundation that Euclid required for his presentation. Modern treatments use more complete sets of axioms. To the ancients, the parallel postulate seemed less obvious than the others, they aspired to create a system of certain propositions, to them it seemed as if the parallel line postulate required proof from simpler statements. It is now known that such a proof is impossible, since one can construct consistent systems of geometry in which the parallel postulate is true, others in which it is false. Euclid himself seems to have considered it as being qualitatively different from the others, as evidenced by the organization of the Elements: his first 28 propositions are those that can be proved without it.
