Baseband is a signal that has a near-zero frequency range, i.e. a spectral magnitude, nonzero only for frequencies in the vicinity of the origin and negligible elsewhere. In telecommunications and signal processing, baseband signals are transmitted without modulation, that is, without any shift in the range of frequencies of the signal. Baseband has a low-frequency—contained within the bandwidth frequency close to 0 hertz up to a higher cut-off frequency. Baseband can be synonymous with lowpass or non-modulated, is differentiated from passband, carrier-modulated, intermediate frequency, or radio frequency. A baseband signal or lowpass signal is a signal that can include frequencies that are near zero, by comparison with its highest frequency. A baseband bandwidth is equal to the highest frequency of a signal or system, or an upper bound on such frequencies, for example the upper cut-off frequency of a low-pass filter. By contrast, passband bandwidth is the difference between a highest frequency and a nonzero lowest frequency.
A baseband channel or lowpass channel is a communication channel that can transfer frequencies that are near zero. Examples are serial cables and local area networks, as opposed to passband channels such as radio frequency channels and passband filtered wires of the analog telephone network. Frequency division multiplexing allows an analog telephone wire to carry a baseband telephone call, concurrently as one or several carrier-modulated telephone calls. Digital baseband transmission known as line coding, aims at transferring a digital bit stream over baseband channel an unfiltered wire, contrary to passband transmission known as carrier-modulated transmission. Passband transmission makes communication possible over a bandpass filtered channel, such as the telephone network local-loop or a band-limited wireless channel; the word "BASE" in Ethernet physical layer standards, for example 10BASE5, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-SX, implies baseband digital transmission. A baseband processor known as BP or BBP is used to process the down-converted digital signal to retrieve essential data for the wireless digital system.
The baseband processing block in GNSS receivers is responsible for providing observable data: code pseudo-ranges and carrier phase measurements, as well as navigation data. An equivalent baseband signal or equivalent lowpass signal is—in analog and digital modulation methods for signals with constant or varying carrier frequency —a complex valued representation of the modulated physical signal; the equivalent baseband signal is Z = I + j Q where I is the inphase signal, Q the quadrature phase signal, j the imaginary unit. In a digital modulation method, the I and Q signals of each modulation symbol are evident from the constellation diagram; the frequency spectrum of this signal includes negative as well as positive frequencies. The physical passband signal corresponds to I cos − Q sin = R e where ω is the carrier angular frequency in rad/s. A signal at baseband is used to modulate a higher frequency carrier signal in order that it may be transmitted via radio. Modulation results in shifting the signal up to much higher frequencies than it spanned.
A key consequence of the usual double-sideband amplitude modulation is that the range of frequencies the signal spans is doubled. Thus, the RF bandwidth of a signal is twice its baseband bandwidth. Steps may be taken to reduce this effect, such as single-sideband modulation; some transmission schemes such as frequency modulation use more bandwidth. The figure shows what happens with AM modulation: Complex envelope Broadband In-phase and quadrature components Narrowband Wideband

The Hornbæk Line is a 24.5 km long standard gauge single track local passenger railway line north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs along the coast of Øresund between Helsingør and Gilleleje, through an area with many holiday homes; the name Hornbækbanen refers to the town Hornbæk about halfway between Gilleleje. The section from Helsingør to Hornbæk opened in 1906, the section from Hornbæk to Gilleleje in 1916; the railway is owned by Hovedstadens Lokalbaner and operated by the railway company Lokaltog. Lokaltog runs frequent local train services from Helsingør station to Gilleleje station with most trains continuing from Gilleleje along the Gribskov Line to Hillerød station; the first 12.9 km long section of the railway line from Helsingør to Hornbæk opened on 22 May 1906 as the Helsingør-Hornbæk Banen. Trains on the Hornbæk Line terminated at Grønnehave station in the northern part of Helsingør, but from 1908 all trains were continued via a connecting track along the harbour to Helsingør station and departing from a special railway halt in the street next to the station building.
The next 12 km long section from Hornbæk onwards to Gilleleje opened on 11 July 1916 and the railway changed its name to Helsingør-Hornbæk-Gilleleje Banen. In 2002, train operation on the Hornbæk Line was transferred from the operating company Helsingør-Hornbæk-Gilleleje Banen A/S to the newly formed railway company Lokalbanen A/S responsible for train operation on five local railways north of Copenhagen. Lokalbanen A/S merged with Regionstog A/S on 1 July 2015 to form the railway company Lokaltog A/S, responsible for train operation and related passenger services on the Hornbæk Line; the Hornbæk Line originates from Helsingør station, running north via a connecting track along the harbour to Grønnehave station in the northern part of the city. From Grønnehave station the line continues to the northwest, following the coast line of the Øresund and serving the seaside towns of Ålsgårde, Hornbæk and Dronningmølle. From Dronningmølle the line continues due west, before curving north to reach its terminus at Gilleleje where the line connects with the tracks of the Gribskov Line at Gilleleje station.
Trains on the Hornbæk Line are operated by the railway company Lokaltog. Lokaltog operates a intensive timetable on the Hornbæk Line with light DMUs working a fixed 30-minute frequency most of the day. Most passengers connect from Kystbanen regional trains at Helsingør; until late 2007, transfers to and from Gribskovbanen were possible at Gilleleje, but after major changes to Gilleleje station, trains now operate through Gilleleje to Hillerød along Gribskovbanen. This has eliminated the need to change at Gilleleje, but at the cost of going from 20-minute to 30-minute intervals. During the summer months of July and August, Nordsjællands Veterantog operates weekend steam trains on the Hornbæk Line between Grønnehave and Gilleleje; this has been a tradition since 1971.
