Single (music)
–
In music, a single or record single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record, an album or an EP record. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats, in most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular, in other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album. As digital downloading and audio streaming have become prevalent, it is often possible for every track on an album to also be available separately. Nevertheless, the concept of a single for an album has been retained as an identification of a heavily promoted or more popular song within an album collection. Despite being referred to as a single, singles can include up to as many as three tracks on them. The biggest digital music distributor, iTunes, accepts as many as three tracks less than ten minutes each as a single, as well as popular music player Spotify also following in this trend. Any more than three tracks on a release or longer than thirty minutes in total running time is either an Extended Play or if over six tracks long. The basic specifications of the single were made in the late 19th century. Gramophone discs were manufactured with a range of speeds and in several sizes. By about 1910, however, the 10-inch,78 rpm shellac disc had become the most commonly used format, the inherent technical limitations of the gramophone disc defined the standard format for commercial recordings in the early 20th century.26 rpm. With these factors applied to the 10-inch format, songwriters and performers increasingly tailored their output to fit the new medium, the breakthrough came with Bob Dylans Like a Rolling Stone. Singles have been issued in various formats, including 7-inch, 10-inch, other, less common, formats include singles on digital compact cassette, DVD, and LD, as well as many non-standard sizes of vinyl disc. Some artist release singles on records, a more common in musical subcultures. The most common form of the single is the 45 or 7-inch. The names are derived from its speed,45 rpm. The 7-inch 45 rpm record was released 31 March 1949 by RCA Victor as a smaller, more durable, the first 45 rpm records were monaural, with recordings on both sides of the disc. As stereo recordings became popular in the 1960s, almost all 45 rpm records were produced in stereo by the early 1970s

Initial classical music releases were from Philips Records which distributed Columbia product in Europe, pop talent on co-owned Okeh Records were transferred to Epic which made Okeh a rhythm and blues label. Epics bright-yellow, black, and blue became a familiar trademark for many jazz. By 1960, the musical base had been expanded to include all genres. This was done in part to prevent the roster of Columbia Records from being overstuffed with newer artists, subsequently, Epic became better known for its signing of newer, fledgling acts. Songwriter
–
A songwriter is an individual who writes the lyrics, melodies and chord progressions for songs, typically for a popular music genre such as rock or country music. A songwriter can also be called a composer, although the term tends to be used mainly for individuals from the classical music genre. The pressure from the industry to produce popular hits means that songwriting is often an activity for which the tasks are distributed between a number of people. For example, a songwriter who excels at writing lyrics might be paired with a songwriter with a gift for creating original melodies, pop songs may be written by group members from the band or by staff writers – songwriters directly employed by music publishers. Some songwriters serve as their own publishers, while others have outside publishers. The old-style apprenticeship approach to learning how to write songs is being supplemented by university degrees and college diplomas, a knowledge of modern music technology, songwriting elements and business skills are necessary requirements to make a songwriting career in the 2010s. Several music colleges offer songwriting diplomas and degrees with music business modules, the legal power to grant these permissions may be bought, sold or transferred. This is governed by international copyright law, song pitching can be done on a songwriters behalf by their publisher or independently using tip sheets like RowFax, the MusicRow publication and SongQuarters. Skills associated with song-writing include entrepreneurism and creativity, songwriters who sign an exclusive songwriting agreement with a publisher are called staff writers. In the Nashville country music scene, there is a staff writer culture where contracted writers work normal 9-to-5 hours at the publishing office and are paid a regular salary. This salary is in effect the writers draw, an advance on future earnings, the publisher owns the copyright of songs written during the term of the agreement for a designated period, after which the songwriter can reclaim the copyright. In an interview with HitQuarters, songwriter Dave Berg extolled the benefits of the set-up, unlike contracted writers, some staff writers operate as employees for their respective publishers. Under the terms of work for hire agreements, the compositions created are fully owned by the publisher. In Nashville, young writers are often encouraged to avoid these types of contracts. Staff writers are common across the industry, but without the more office-like working arrangements favored in Nashville. All the major publishers employ writers under contract, songwriter Allan Eshuijs described his staff writer contract at Universal Music Publishing as a starter deal. His success under the arrangement eventually allowed him to found his own publishing company, so that he could. keep as much as possible, songwriters are also often skilled musicians. In addition to selling their songs and musical concepts for other artists to sing, songwriters need to create a number of elements for a song

Record producer
–
A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. Producers became creative figures in the studio, other examples of such engineers includes Joe Meek, Teo Macero, Brian Wilson, and Biddu

The song was promoted with a video that premiered on Top of the Pops. It centered on Susie seducing Jackson in a dance, before opening a switchblade. Blood on the Dance Floor was the track from the remix album performed on the HIStory World Tour. The lead single peaked at one in several countries, including the UK. Teddy Riley came up with the title while Michael recorded the piece for his Dangerous album in 1991—it failed to make the final track listing. Shazam stores a catalogue of audio fingerprints in a database, the user tags a song for 10 seconds and the application creates an audio fingerprint. Once it creates the fingerprint of the audio, Shazam starts the search for matches in the database, if there is a match, it returns the information to the user, otherwise it returns a song not known dialogue. Shazam offers two types of applications, a free app simply called Shazam, and an app called Shazam Encore. The company went online as Amazon. com in 1995, Bezos placed a premium on his head start in building a brand, telling a reporter, Theres nothing about our model that cant be copied over time. But you know, McDonalds got copied, and it still built a huge, multibillion-dollar company. A lot of it comes down to the brand name, brand names are more important online than they are in the physical world. Additionally, a beginning with A was preferential due to the probability it would occur at the top of any list that was alphabetized. Since June 19,2000, Amazons logotype has featured a curved arrow leading from A to Z, representing that the company carries every product from A to Z, with the arrow shaped like a smile. After reading a report about the future of the Internet that projected annual Web commerce growth at 2, 300% and he narrowed the list to what he felt were the five most promising products, which included, compact discs, computer hardware, computer software, videos and books. Amazon was founded in the garage of Bezos home in Bellevue, the company began as an online bookstore, an idea spurred off with discussion with John Ingram of Ingram Book, along with Keyur Patel who still holds a stake in Amazon. Amazon was able to access books at wholesale from Ingram, in the first two months of business, Amazon sold to all 50 states and over 45 countries

Streaming media
–
Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider. A client end-user can use their player to begin to play the data file before the entire file has been transmitted. For example, in the 1930s, elevator music was among the earliest popularly available streaming media, the term streaming media can apply to media other than video and audio such as live closed captioning, ticker tape, and real-time text, which are all considered streaming text. As of 2017, streaming is generally taken to refer to cases where a user watches digital video content or listens to audio content on a computer screen. With streaming content, the user does not have to download the digital video or digital audio file before they start to watch/listen to it. There are challenges with streaming content on the Internet, as of 2016, two popular streaming services are the video sharing website YouTube, which contains video and audio files on a huge range of topics and Netflix, which streams movies and TV shows. Live streaming refers to Internet content delivered in real-time, as events happen, Live internet streaming requires a form of source media, an encoder to digitize the content, a media publisher, and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content. Live streaming does not need to be recorded at the origination point, in the early 1920s, George O. Attempts to display media on computers date back to the earliest days of computing in the mid-20th century, however, little progress was made for several decades, primarily due to the high cost and limited capabilities of computer hardware. From the late 1980s through the 1990s, consumer-grade personal computers became powerful enough to various media. These technological improvement facilitated the streaming of audio and video content to users in their homes and workplaces. The band Severe Tire Damage was the first group to live on the Internet. On June 24,1993, the band was playing a gig at Xerox PARC while elsewhere in the building, as proof of PARCs technology, the bands performance was broadcast and could be seen live in Australia and elsewhere. Microsoft Research developed a Microsoft TV application which was compiled under MS Windows Studio Suite, realNetworks was also a pioneer in the streaming media markets, when it broadcast a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners over the Internet in 1995. The first symphonic concert on the Internet took place at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, the concert was a collaboration between The Seattle Symphony and various guest musicians such as Slash, Matt Cameron, and Barrett Martin. When Word Magazine launched in 1995, they featured the first-ever streaming soundtracks on the Internet.4 in 1999, in June 1999 Apple also introduced a streaming media format in its QuickTime 4 application. It was later widely adopted on websites along with RealPlayer. In 2000 Industryview. com launched its worlds largest streaming video archive website to help promote themselves

Mashup (music)
–
A mashup is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another. To the extent that such works are transformative of original content, mashups are known by a number of different names, Bootlegs Boots Mash-ups Mashed hits Smashups Bastard pop Blends Cutups Powermixing Crossovers, but it is in a form of mashup, or version vs. version. In addition, more terms such as edits or remixes are favored by many bootleggers. The practice of assembling new songs from purloined elements of other tracks stretches back to the beginnings of recorded music, in addition, many elements of mashup culture have antecedents in hip hop and the DIY ethic of punk as well as overlap with the free culture movement. In 1956, Bill Buchanan and Dickie Goodman released what they called a break-in song, Goodman had several other similar hits in the 1960s and 1970s. There have been a number of novelty records and one-off hits that have included uncleared samples, the song Your Woman by White Town features an uncredited sample from a 1932 song My Woman by the Lew Stone Band taken from the soundtrack of the Dennis Potter series Pennies From Heaven. Other notable one-off bootlegs include DNAs dance remix of Suzanne Vegas Toms Diner, Toms Diner is likely to be the first song that was mash mixed as we now know the process. One series was John Morales Deadly Medleys, in which he mixed-up disco hits of the moment to form beat-consistent collages, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dutch producer Jaap Eggermont produced the Stars on 45 series of records. These records attempted to cram as many hits as possible into the space of a three and a pop song, and are more accurately described as medleys. A similar series by Mirage in the late 1980s took this further by densely layering the songs on its Jack Mix records so that these were close to later mashups. Singer-producer Jonathan King anticipated the mashup genre with several novelty singles, in 1987, King accused the Pet Shop Boys of plagiarizing the melody of Cat Stevens Wild World for their song Its A Sin. To prove the point, King recorded a version of Wild World with an arrangement virtually identical to that of Its A Sin, little Roger and the Goosebumps released their single Gilligans Island, later renamed Stairway to Gilligans Island in May 1978 on their own Splash Records label. The song combines the lyrics to the song of the television show Gilligans Island with the music of Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. In the 1970s, Frank Zappa developed a technique he called xenochrony in which a solo was extracted from its original context. His recording engineer referred to this as the Ampex guitar, in his rock opera Joes Garage, for example, Zappas xenochrony can be heard on every track apart from Packard Goose. Rubber Shirt from the album Sheik Yerbouti consists of a bass track, John Oswald has been devising illegitimate compositions since the late 1960s. Similarly, his 1990 track Vane, which pitted two different versions of the song Youre So Vain against each other, was a blueprint for the contemporary mashup subgenre, Oswald coined the term plunderphonics to describe his illegitimate craft. Arguably his most ambitious composition to date, it attempted to microsample the history of CD music up to point in a 20-minute collage of bewildering complexity

The Jackson 5
–
The Jackson 5, or Jackson Five, also known as The Jacksons in later years, was an American popular music group. Formed in 1964 under the name the Jackson Brothers, the members were elder brothers Jackie, Tito. Younger brothers Marlon and Michael would join soon after and they participated in talent shows and performed in clubs on the chitlin circuit. They entered the music scene in 1967, signing with Steeltown Records. In 1969, the group left Steeltown Records and signed with Motown, the Jackson 5 was one of the first groups of black American performers to attain a crossover following, preceded by the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Temptations. In 1983, Jermaine reunited with the band to perform on Motown 25, Yesterday, Today, Forever, after the end of their tour to promote the album, Michael and Marlon Jackson promptly left the group. The remaining four released the poorly received 2300 Jackson Street album in 1989 before being dropped from their label. Inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999, following the death of Michael Jackson in 2009, the four eldest of the brothers embarked on their Unity Tour in 2012. The five Jackson brothers interest in music began in Gary, Indiana, bolstered by their father, in 1964, Joe caught Tito playing with his guitar after a string broke. Upon fixing the string, threatening punishment, Titos father had him play and was impressed enough to buy Tito his own guitar, Marlon, then seven years old, eventually joined, playing the tambourine. Johnny Jackson and Ronnie Rancifer eventually replaced Milford Hite and Reynaud Jones, during early 1968, the group also performed at strip clubs on Joes behest to earn extra income. Following initial recordings at Detroits Hitsville USA studio, Berry Gordy sent the Jacksons to Hollywood in July, hiring Suzanne de Passe to become a mentor of the brothers. Starting in August, the Jackson Five performed as the act for The Supremes. In October, their first single for Motown was released and the group promoted it while performing at the Hollywood Palace with Ross hosting, in December, the brothers made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Afterwards, their album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5, was released that same month. In January 1970, I Want You Back topped the Billboard Hot 100, led by the Corporation, the Jackson 5 released two more number-one singles, ABC and The Love You Save. All four singles were almost as popular in countries as they were in the United States. Releasing a succession of four albums in one year, the Jackson 5 replaced The Supremes as Motowns best-selling group

This Place Hotel
–
This Place Hotel was a hit recording by The Jacksons when it was released in 1980. Written and composed by Michael, the song would precede Jacksons own hit, Billie Jean, while his brothers did not sing background vocals, they were credited with playing percussion on the album while brother Tito contributed a guitar solo. The song has a tempo of 98 beats per minute, making it slower than many of the other disco-based songs on the album. In the song, the protagonist speaks of a time ten years ago. The staff at the hotel gave the girl the impression that he had cheated on her with someone else, something he did not do, the song reached number twenty-two on the Billboard pop singles chart and number two on the R&B singles chart. This Place Hotel was the second biggest single off their Triumph album. The song, in turn, became a concert performance for the groups next two tours right into Michaels own Bad tour. The song, like the aforementioned Can You Feel It, has one of the oft-sampled songs in hip-hop. The songs title was changed because of the 1956 Elvis Presley hit, Michael claimed to be unaware of the Presley song but had the title changed nonetheless. The song was performed on the Jacksons Triumph Tour and was used on the Jacksons Victory Tour. A spoken word and synth recording preceded the song on the first leg of the Bad tour, the song was included on Michael Jacksons The Ultimate Collection and it has been remixed on the Immortal album in 2011. A live version of the song is available on the 2012 DVD Live at Wembley July 16,1988, on March 23,2014, a video clip of a live performance of the song from the Victory Tour was uploaded to The Jacksons official YouTube account. Leave Me Alone
–
Leave Me Alone is a single by American artist Michael Jackson. The song was featured on Jacksons seventh studio album, Bad, and was its eighth single in February 1989, but was released outside of the United States and Canada. Leave Me Alone was recorded during the album sessions but the song only appeared on the CD editions of Bad as a bonus track. The song was written and composed by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones, internationally, the song was a success, peaking at number one and two in Ireland and the United Kingdom respectively and reaching the top 10 in Belgium, New Zealand and Spain. Leave Me Alone was generally received by contemporary music critics. A short film was released for the song, in the film, Jackson pokes fun at the false rumors about him such as the stories about him purchasing the bones of The Elephant Man and his cosmetic surgeries. The short film was the recipient of a Grammy Award in 1990 for Best Short Form Music Video, despite the success of the single, the song never appeared on any of Jacksons world concert tours. Leave Me Alone was a response to negative and false stories about Jackson that frequently appeared in the media and tabloids post-1986 after the success of Thriller. Beginning in 1986, the tabloids began to publish stories about Jackson. A picture leaked out to the media of him lying down in a chamber at a hospital he visited. An unknown person took the picture of Jackson while he was testing out the chamber out of curiosity, when Jackson bought a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles, the media viewed it as evidence of Jacksons increasing detachment from reality. It was also reported that Jackson had offered to buy the bones of Joseph Merrick and these stories inspired the nickname Wacko Jacko, which Jackson acquired the following year, and would come to despise. Another frequent response from the media was about Jacksons plastic surgery, Jacksons manager said of the medias criticism towards the topic, So many terrible things have been written. Okay, so he had his nose fixed, and the cleft — big deal, I got news for you, my nose has broke five times. Marilyn Monroe had her nose done, had her breasts done, the song has been viewed as having a paranoia theme, a theme that Jackson had frequently used on previous studio albums. The Atlantic felt that Jackson showed obvious expressions of distrust in the song and that the song was one of multiple songs where Jacksons persistent loneliness in his music was prominent. In 2009, J. Edward Keyes, of Rolling Stone, described Leave Me Alone as sounding like vintage Michael and the works because of its music. Leave Me Alone is a song played with a synthesizer

Donaldson later acquired Hennegens interest in 1900 for $500, in the 1900s, it covered the entertainment industry, such as circuses, fairs and burlesque shows. It also created a service for travelling entertainers. Billboard began focusing more on the industry as the jukebox, phonograph. Many topics it covered were spun-off into different magazines, including Amusement Business in 1961 to cover outdoor entertainment so that it could focus on music. After Donaldson died in 1925, Billboard was passed down to his children and Hennegans children, until it was sold to investors in 1985. The first issue of Billboard was published in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 1,1894 by William Donaldson, initially, it covered the advertising and bill posting industry and was called Billboard Advertising. His was released as a single in 1971 reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the two versions were recorded simultaneously in 1971 with shared musicians. Youve Got a Friend won Grammy Awards both for Taylor and King, dozens of other artists have recorded the song over the years, including Dusty Springfield, Michael Jackson, Anne Murray and Donny Hathaway. Youve Got a Friend was written by Carole King during the January 1971 recording sessions for her own album Tapestry, and James Taylors album Mud Slide Slim, King has stated that the song was as close to pure inspiration as Ive ever experienced. It was written by something outside myself, through me, according to Taylor, King told him that the song was a response to a line in Taylors earlier song Fire and Rain that I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend. Kings album was recorded in an overlap with Taylors, and King, Danny Kortchmar, the song is included on both albums, King said in a 1972 interview that she didnt write it with James or anybody really specifically in mind. But when James heard it he really liked it and wanted to record it, Taylors version was released as a single, and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. The James Taylor version also spent one week at the top of the Easy Listening charts, Billboard ranked it as the No.17 song for 1971. According to author James D. Perone, the themes include an expression of a universal, sisterly/brotherly, agape-type love of one human being for another. The reassuring lyrics have made the song popular with lonely people needing a boost of self-confidence. The songs messages of friendship having no boundaries and a friend being there when you are in need has universal appeal, for Taylor the lyrics had particular resonance due to the depression he had recovered from shortly before hearing King play the song. The music moves between a major and minor key, which according to music critic Maury Dean gives the song a sympathetic mood, in his review of Tapestry, Rolling Stone critic Jon Landau called Youve Got a Friend Carole Kings most perfect new song. He particularly praised how the melody and lyrics support each other, mojo considered the song to probably be the core of Tapestry. Allmusic critic Stewart Mason commented on the intimacy of Kings performance. Mason finds that the shyness of Kings voice gives her recording of the song a sincerity that he finds Taylors to lack, Mason also praises the depth and shading provided by the string instruments on Kings recording. Music critic Maury Dean describes Taylors performance style for the song as minimalist and folkish, Dusty Springfield recorded the song in early 1971 during the sessions for her third Atlantic Records album Faithful

My Girl (The Temptations song)
–
My Girl is a 1964 standard recorded by The Temptations for the Gordy label which became a number one hit in 1965. Written and produced by The Miracles members Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, the became the Temptations first U. S. number-one single. Robinsons inspiration for writing this song was his wife, Miracles member Claudette Rogers Robinson, the song was featured on the Temptations album The Temptations Sing Smokey. Musically, the song is notable because the six ascending guitar notes in the riff over the C chord are a perfect example of a C major pentatonic scale. Similarly, the riff in the song that is played over the F chord is a perfect example of an F major pentatonic scale. The recorded version of My Girl was the first Temptations single to feature David Ruffin on lead vocals, previously, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams had performed most of the groups lead vocals, and Ruffin had joined the group as a replacement for former Temptation Elbridge Bryant. While on tour as part of the Motortown Revue, a tour for most of the Motown roster. The group had included a medley of standards in the show, one of which. Impressed, Robinson decided to produce a single with Ruffin singing lead, Robinson saw Ruffin as a sleeping giant in the group with a unique voice that was mellow yet gruff. Robinson thought that if he could write just the song for Ruffins voice. The song was to be something that Ruffin could belt out yet something that was also melodic, according to Robinson, he allowed the group to create their own background vocals because they were so great at background vocals. The signature guitar riff heard during the introduction and under the verses was played by Robert White of the Funk Brothers and this part can be heard without vocals on the 2004 deluxe edition of the soundtrack from the 2002 documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. My Girl was later sampled for Stay, a single from the Temptations 1998 album Phoenix Rising, the single was re-released in 1992. All the Things You Are

The song ranked in the top five of the Record Buying Guide of Billboard, recordings by Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Frankie Masters propelled the song during its initial popularity. Its verse is rarely sung now, but the chorus has become a favourite with singers. Note, The harmonic analysis demonstrates the use of the technique known as circle of fifths. The chords of the A2 section precisely echo those of the initial eight measure A section, so Fmi7 in A becomes Cmi7 in A2, Bbmi7 becomes Fmi7, Eb7 becomes Bb7, etc. In the same vein, the melody sung over A2 is identical to the A section melody except every pitch of every note is also lowered by a perfect 4th interval. The first 5 measures of A3 are identical to the initial 8 measure long A, in the 6th measure, A3 takes a new path that does not come to an end until the 12 measure of the section. 3 no.2, the other is an interpolation of the song from Ferde Grofes Grand Canyon Suite. He used to call it YATAG which is an acronym for the lines you are the angel glow in the B part of the tune. com All the Things You Are for Jazz Guitar Lyrics of this song at MetroLyrics
