Galactic quadrant (Star Trek)

In the television series Star Trek and its spin-offs, a galactic quadrant is an area of the Milky Way Galaxy. In the original Star Trek, it referred to an area interchangeable with a sector, the original usage of quadrant occurs in episodes such as The Deadly Years and The Squire of Gothos, where numbered quadrants are given. In other episodes it appears to refer to a quarter of the galaxy. The season 3 Star Trek, The Next Generation Writers Technical Manual asserts that there are four quadrants in each sector, the exact quadrant borders are not clearly established in the series canon. Art staff explanations also contradict each other, the Star Trek, The Next Generation episode The Price introduced the concept of four quadrants of the galaxy, named the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta quadrants, respectively. Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country implies that the Alpha/Beta border runs through, or is close to. The Star Trek Encyclopedia attributes this decision to a desire to rationalize a line in Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, kirk claimed that the Enterprise was the only ship in a Quadrant. The Alpha Quadrant and the areas of the Beta Quadrant are the primary setting of Star Trek, Star Trek, The Next Generation, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine. The Star Trek Star Charts have the Romulans and Klingons entirely within the Beta Quadrant, as well as the Gorn Hegemony, the Sona Solidarity, and the Metron Consortium. Star Trek Star Charts further located the First Federation, Breen, Ferengi, Tzenkethi, Cardassians, Bajorans, Talarians, and Tholians in the Alpha Quadrant. The Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph also has a galactic meridian running through Sol, but depicted the Romulans as being counterclockwise, and the Klingons as being clockwise. Although the Romulans and Klingons are shown by maps as part of the Beta Quadrant, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine did not use this terminology, referring to them as Alpha Quadrant powers. Ronald D. Moore noted that the Alpha quadrant is firmly planted in the mind as where the Federation, the Klingons. About 600,000 years ago, the Alpha Quadrant was dominated by the Tkon Empire, the Gamma Quadrant is situated between 270 degrees and 0 degrees. Fantasy tropes are a specific type of literary tropes that occur in fantasy fiction. Worldbuilding, in particular, has many common conventions, as do plot and characterization, to a lesser extent. Many works of fantasy operate using these tropes, while others use them in a revisionist manner, making the tropes over for reasons such as for comic effect. The conflict of good against evil is a theme in the popular forms of fantasy, normally, evil characters erupt from their lands to invade. In some works, mostly notably in sword and sorcery, evil is not opposed by the unambiguously good, heroic characters are a mainstay of fantasy, particularly high fantasy and sword and sorcery. Such characters are capable of more than ordinary behavior, physically, morally, sometimes they might have to grow into the role ordained for them. This may take the form of maturation, which is often through Coming of Age, many protagonists are, unknown to themselves, of royal blood. Even in so fanciful a tale as Through the Looking-Glass, Alice is made a queen in the end, commonly, these tales revolve around the maltreated hero coming into his or her own. This can reflect a wish-fulfillment dream, or symbolically embody a profound transformation, the forces of evil are often personified in a Dark Lord. Besides possessing vast magical abilities, a Dark Lord often controls great armies, the villain of the Demon Sword video game is also literally called Dark Lord. In the Lone Wolf gamebooks, the Dark Lords are a race of powerful evil beings. The protagonists of the Overlord video game franchise are classic Dark Lords in the vein of Sauron, the Dark Lord is usually seen as unmarried, though there has been occasion when one has attempted to claim a bride. Quests, a trope in literature, are common in fantasy. They can be anything from a quest to locate the MacGuffins necessary to save the world, in fantasy, magic often has an overwhelming presence, although its precise nature is delineated in the book in which it appears. It can appear in a world, or in a fantasy land that is part of reality but insulated from the mundane lands. A common trope is that the ability to work magic is innate, as a consequence the person who uses it, usually called a magician, wizard, sorcerer, warlock, mage, or magus, is a common figure in fantasy. Another feature is the item, which can endow characters with magical abilities that are not innate. Among the most common are magic swords and magic rings, self-fulfilling prophecies are amongst the most common forms of magic because they are an often used plot device

Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise based on the television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The first television series, simply called Star Trek and now referred to as The Original Series, debuted in 1966 and it followed the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise, an exploration vessel. The Star Trek canon of the franchise include The Original Series, a series, four spin-off television series, its film franchise. In creating Star Trek, Roddenberry was inspired by the Horatio Hornblower novels, the satirical book Gullivers Travels and these adventures continued in the short-lived Star Trek, The Animated Series and six feature films. The adventures of The Next Generation crew continued in four feature films. In 2009, the franchise underwent a reboot set in an alternate timeline, or Kelvin Timeline. This film featured a new cast portraying younger versions of the crew from the show, their adventures were continued in the sequel film. The thirteenth film feature and sequel, Star Trek Beyond, was released to coincide with the franchises 50th anniversary, a new Star Trek TV series, titled Star Trek, Discovery, will premiere in May 2017 on the digital platform CBS All Access. Star Trek has been a phenomenon for decades. Fans of the franchise are called Trekkies or Trekkers, the franchise spans a wide range of spin-offs including games, figurines, novels, toys, and comics. Star Trek had an attraction in Las Vegas that opened in 1998. At least two museum exhibits of props travel the world, the series has its own full-fledged constructed language, Klingon. Several parodies have been made of Star Trek, in addition, viewers have produced several fan productions. As of July 2016, the franchise had generated $10 billion in revenue, Star Trek is noted for its cultural influence beyond works of science fiction. The franchise is also noted for its civil rights stances. Cyborg

A cyborg is a being with both organic and biomechatronic body parts. The term was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes and Nathan S. Kline, while cyborgs are commonly thought of as mammals, including humans, they might also conceivably be any kind of organism. In popular culture, some cyborgs may be represented as visibly mechanical or as almost indistinguishable from humans, Cyborgs in fiction often play up a human contempt for over-dependence on technology, particularly when used for war, and when used in ways that seem to threaten free will. Cyborgs are also portrayed with physical or mental abilities far exceeding a human counterpart. According to some definitions of the term, the physical attachments humanity has with even the most basic technologies have made them cyborgs. Implants, especially cochlear implants, that combine mechanical modification with any kind of response are also cyborg enhancements. Some theorists cite such modifications as contact lenses, hearing aids, as cyborgs currently are on the rise some theorists argue there is a need to develop new definitions of aging and for instance a bio-techno-social definition of aging has been suggested. The term is used to address human-technology mixtures in the abstract. When augmented with these technologies and connected in communication with people in times and places. Molecular machine

A molecular machine, or nanomachine, refers to any discrete number of molecular components that produce quasi-mechanical movements in response to specific stimuli. The expression is more generally applied to molecules that simply mimic functions that occur at the macroscopic level. The term is common in nanotechnology where a number of highly complex molecular machines have been proposed that are aimed at the goal of constructing a molecular assembler. Molecular machines can be divided into two categories, synthetic and biological. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa for the design, from a synthetic perspective, there are two important types of molecular machines, molecular switches and molecular motors. The major difference between the two systems is that a switch influences a system as a function of state, whereas a motor influences a system as a function of trajectory. A switch may appear to undergo translational motion, but returning a switch to its original position undoes any mechanical effect, furthermore, switches cannot use chemical energy to repetitively and progressively drive a system away from equilibrium whereas a motor can. A wide variety of simple molecular machines have been synthesized by chemists. They can consist of a molecule, however, they are often constructed for mechanically-interlocked molecular architectures. Carbon nanotube nanomotors have also been produced, molecular motors are molecules that are capable of unidirectional rotation motion powered by external energy input. A number of machines have been synthesized powered by light or reaction with other molecules. A molecular propeller is a molecule that can propel fluids when rotated and it has several molecular-scale blades attached at a certain pitch angle around the circumference of a nanoscale shaft. A molecular switch is a molecule that can be shifted between two or more stable states. The molecules may be shifted between the states in response to changes in e. g. pH, light, temperature, a molecular shuttle is a molecule capable of shuttling molecules or ions from one location to another. A common molecular shuttle consists of a rotaxane where the macrocycle can move between two sites or stations along the dumbbell backbone, molecular tweezers are host molecules capable of holding items between their two arms. Examples of molecular tweezers have been reported that are constructed from DNA and are considered DNA machines, a molecular sensor is a molecule that interacts with an analyte to produce a detectable change. Molecular sensors combine molecular recognition with some form of reporter, so the presence of the item can be observed, a molecular logic gate is a molecule that performs a logical operation on one or more logic inputs and produces a single logic output. Star Trek, The Next Generation is an American science fiction television series in the Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry that ran between 1987 and 1994. Roddenberry, Maurice Hurley, Rick Berman, Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor served as producers at different times throughout its production. The series involves a starship named Enterprise and is set in the regions of the Milky Way galaxy. The first episode takes place in the year 2364,100 years after the start of the mission described in the original series. It features a new cast and a new starship Enterprise, the fifth to bear the name within the franchises storyline and these are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. TNG premiered the week of September 28,1987, drawing 27 million viewers, in total,176 episodes were made, ending with the two-hour finale All Good Things. The week of May 23,1994, the series was broadcast in first-run syndication with dates and times varying among individual television stations. Three additional Star Trek spin-offs followed The Next Generation, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek, Voyager, and Star Trek, Enterprise. The series formed the basis for the seventh through to the tenth of the Star Trek films, and is also the setting of novels, comic books. In its seventh season, Star Trek, The Next Generation became the first, the series received a number of accolades including 19 Emmy Awards, two Hugo Awards, five Saturn Awards, and a Peabody Award. The series follows the adventures of a crew on board the starship USS Enterprise, the fifth Federation vessel to bear the name and registry. The series is set about 70 years after the mission of the original Enterprise crew under the command of James T. Kirk. Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek, First Contact is a 1996 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the feature film in the Star Trek film franchise. In the films plot, the crew of the Starship USS Enterprise-E travel back in time to the mid-21st century to stop the cybernetic Borg from conquering Earth by changing the past. After the release of the film, Star Trek Generations, Paramount tasked writers Brannon Braga. Braga and Moore wanted to feature the Borg in the plot, after two better-known directors turned down the job, cast member Jonathan Frakes was chosen to direct, to make sure the task fell to someone who understood Star Trek. It was Frakes first theatrical film, the script required the creation of new starship designs, including a new USS Enterprise. Production designer Herman Zimmerman and illustrator John Eaves collaborated to make a ship than its predecessor. Principal photography began with weeks of shooting in Arizona and California before production moved to new sets for the ship-based scenes. Effects company Industrial Light & Magic rushed to complete the special effects in less than five months. Traditional optical effects techniques were supplemented with computer-generated imagery, Jerry Goldsmith and his son Joel collaborated to produce the films score. First Contact was the film on its opening weekend, making $30.7 million. The film made $92 million in the United States & Canada, critical reception was mostly positive, critics including Roger Ebert considered it one of the best Star Trek films. The Borg and the effects were lauded, while characterization was less evenly received. First Contact was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup, the film has been released on videotape, LaserDisc, DVD and Blu-ray home video formats. Scholarly analysis of the film has focused on Captain Jean-Luc Picards parallels to Herman Melvilles Ahab, Captain Jean-Luc Picard wakes from a nightmare in which he relived his assimilation by the cybernetic Borg six years earlier. Starfleet informs him of a new Borg attack against The Federation, intercepting the overwhelmed fleets audio communications, Picard disobeys orders and heads the Enterprise for Earth, where a single, damaged Borg Cube destroys opposing Starfleet vessels. The Enterprise arrives in time to save the crew of the USS Defiant, Picard takes command of the fleet and, after hearing Borg communications in his mind, orders it to concentrate its firepower on a seemingly non-vital section of the Borg ship. The Cube is destroyed but manages to launch a smaller sphere ship towards the planet before disintegrating, the Borg sphere generates and enters a temporal vortex

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek, Voyager was an American science fiction television series set in the Star Trek universe. The series takes place during the years 2371 to 2378 and it follows the adventures of the Starfleet vessel USS Voyager, which becomes stranded in the Delta Quadrant while searching for a renegade Maquis ship. Voyager has to make the estimated 75-year journey home, Voyager was produced for seven seasons, from 1995 to 2001, and is the first and only Star Trek TV series with a female captain, Kathryn Janeway, as the lead character. Berman served as executive producer in charge of the overall production for the series during its entire run. He was assisted by a second in command executive producer who generally functioned as the day-to-day showrunner, four were used throughout the series run, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, Brannon Braga, and Kenneth Biller. Star Trek, Voyager aired on UPN and was the networks second-longest running series, some streaming services also show the pilot as a single episode rather than splitting it up into two parts. As Star Trek, The Next Generation ended, Paramount Pictures wanted to continue to have a second Star Trek TV series to accompany Star Trek, the studio also planned to start a new television network, and wanted the new series to help it succeed. This was reminiscent of Paramounts earlier plans to launch its own network by showcasing Star Trek, Phase II in 1977. Initial work on Star Trek, Voyager began in 1993, when the seventh and final season of Star Trek, The Next Generation, Voyager was shot on the stages The Next Generation had used, and where the Voyager pilot Caretaker was shot in September 1994. Costume designer Robert Blackman decided that the uniforms of Voyagers crew would be the same as those on Deep Space Nine, Star Trek, Voyager was the first Star Trek series to use computer-generated imagery, rather than models, for exterior space shots. SeaQuest DSV and Babylon 5 had previously used CGI to avoid the expense of models, amblin Imaging won an Emmy for Voyagers opening CGI title visuals, but the weekly episode exteriors were captured with hand-built miniatures of Voyager, its shuttlecraft, and other ships. This changed when Voyager went fully CGI for certain types of shots midway through season three, Foundation Imaging was the studio responsible for special effects during Babylon 5s first three seasons. Season threes The Swarm was the first episode to use Foundations effects exclusively, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine began using Foundation Imaging in conjunction with Digital Muse one year later. In its later seasons, Voyager featured visual effects from Foundation Imaging, the digital effects were produced at television resolution and therefore the series cannot be re-released in HD format without re-creating the special effects. In the pilot episode, Caretaker, USS Voyager departs the Deep Space Nine space station on a mission into the treacherous Badlands. They are searching for a ship piloted by a team of Maquis rebels, which Voyagers security officer. There, Voyager finds the Maquis ship, and eventually the two reluctantly agree to join forces to survive their journey home. USS Voyager (Star Trek)

The fictional Intrepid-class starship USS Voyager is the primary setting of the science fiction television series Star Trek, Voyager. It is commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway, Voyager was designed by Star Trek, Voyager production designer Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach. Most of the ships on-screen appearances result from computer-generated imagery, although Tony Meinenger built a model used in the series, the principal model of Voyager used for filming sold at Christies auction in 2006 for USD $132,000. The crews first orders were to track down a Maquis ship in the Badlands, an alien force called the Caretaker transports both Voyager and the Maquis vessel across 70,000 light-years to the Delta Quadrant, damaging Voyager and killing several crewmembers. To prevent a genocide of the Ocampans, Janeway orders the destruction of a device that could transport Voyager, stranded, and with the Maquis ship also destroyed, both crews must integrate and work together for the anticipated 75-year journey home. Starfleet Command eventually becomes aware of the presence in the Delta Quadrant and is later able to establish regular communication. After a seven-year journey, the returns to the Alpha Quadrant via a Borg transwarp conduit with the aid of the time-traveling Admiral Kathryn Janeway from an alternate future. USS Voyager was launched with 141 crew on board, as of 2377, the crew complement was at 146, having gained some crew from the Maquis, the Equinox, Samantha Wildmans child Naomi, and several liberated Borg drones, including Seven of Nine and Icheb. Several recurring characters include Naomi Wildman, the Captains Assistant and daughter of Ensign Samantha Wildman, and the Borg children, Icheb, Mezoti, Azan, the 15-deck,700,000 tonne Voyager was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and launched from Earth Station McKinley. Voyager is equipped with bio-neural gel packs, designed to increase processing speed and better organize processed information, the ship had 47 spare gel packs and could not replicate additional packs. The ship also has two holodecks, Voyager was the first ship to be equipped with a class-9 warp drive, which was intended to be tested in deep space, allowing for a maximum sustainable speed of Warp 9.975. Variable geometry pylons allow Voyager and other Intrepid class ships to exceed warp 5 without damaging subspace, like the Galaxy Class, Voyagers warp nacelles are below the primary hull. Voyager is capable of planetary landings, unlike the Galaxy Class, the ship cannot separate the saucer during an emergency, instead, it ejects the warp core. Voyager includes an Emergency Medical Hologram programmed with a library of more than 5 million different medical treatments from 2,000 medical references and 47 physicians, the hologram itself is generated by a series of holographic emitters installed in sickbay. Voyagers EMH is eventually able to leave due to a piece of 29th century technology commonly referred to as the mobile emitter. The ship is equipped with 38 photon torpedoes with type VI warheads. Quantum torpedoes were also compatible with Voyagers launchers, with some modification, Voyager housed five standard torpedo launchers able to fire up to four torpedoes per launcher at once. In the final episode, an alternate future Kathryn Janeway equips the ship with transphasic torpedoes, several pieces of technology from the future were also installed in the final episode, courtesy of Admiral Janeway who went back in time to bring Voyager home

Star Trek, Enterprise is an American science fiction television series created by Rick Berman and Brannon Braga as a prequel to Star Trek, The Original Series. It originally aired from September 26,2001 to May 13,2005 on UPN, Set in the 22nd century 100 years before the USS Enterprises five-year mission, the series follows the adventures of the crew of the first Starfleet starship, Enterprise, as they explore the galaxy. An ongoing storyline, referred to as the Temporal Cold War, continued through the third season, in the third season, an escalation of this campaign introduced the Xindi and dealt with the repercussions of their attack on Earth. After being asked to produce a fifth Star Trek series by UPN, Braga and Berman sought to create a basic and relatable series set after the events of the film Star Trek. The episodes concentrated on a trio of characters, Captain Jonathan Archer, Commander Charles Trip Tucker III. It was filmed on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles, California, on the stages that had housed the Star Trek series and films since the abandoned Star Trek. Although Berman and Braga wanted to do a prequel to the original Star Trek series. At the start of the season, Braga said that the storyline would continue to be included while viewers were still interested. The pilot, Broken Bow, was received positively by critics, with praise for the writing and its ratings were good enough that a full seven-season order was expected. However, reviews became more mixed as the first season progressed, by the following season, reviews improved during the last two seasons, but ratings continued to decline. UPN cut its orders for the third and fourth seasons by two episodes each, and canceled the series in 2005. Prior to cancellation, work had begun on planning episodes for the fifth season. Star Trek, Enterprise follows the adventures of the crew of the starship Enterprise and they are the first deep space explorers in Starfleet, using the first Warp 5 equipped vessel. At the start of the series, it is revealed that the Vulcans have withheld advanced technology from humanity since their first contact, concerned that humans were not ready for it. This has delayed human space exploration and caused resentment in Captain Jonathan Archer, whose father developed the Warp 5 engine, Enterprise was intentionally equipped with less advanced versions of technologies seen in previous series. For example, it has no tractor beam, uses instead of photon torpedoes. Communications Officer Linguist Hoshi Satos expertise in linguistics helps compensate for the lack of advanced universal translators, the series also showed the crew making first contacts with a number of races previously seen in the franchise. This particular change was attributed by Berman and Braga to advancements in makeup and they felt that contradictions in the continuity such as the Klingon ridges were unavoidable, as well as those involving technology

Enterprise (NX-01)

Enterprise is a fictional spaceship that appeared in the American science fiction television series Star Trek, Enterprise. It had the registration of NX-01 and appeared earlier in the franchise timeline than any other Starfleet ship named Enterprise. These ideas were turned down by the producers, who pushed for the final version as seen. Drexler also proposed a design, which may have been used if the series continued into a fifth season. The interior of the ship was designed by a number of staff members and he took inspiration from the fast attack submarines of the United States Navy as well as considering the previous vessels named Enterprise in the franchise. In the series itself, the ship was first seen in the pilot episode Broken Bow and was throughout the series undergoing various upgrades. The final appearance occurred in These Are The Voyages, where the ship is seen en route to the signing of the Federation charter and the decommissioning of the ship. Enterprise has appeared in several novels, which describe both its actions in the Romulan War and the vessels final fate as a museum ship in orbit of Pluto. A model of the NX-01 was seen on screen in the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness, there was a negative fan reaction to the design, but television critics were mostly positive, calling the design a sort of retro-futurism. Several Enterprise toys and models have been released, including versions by Art Asylum, Diamond Select Toys, QMx and Eaglemoss Publications. In the original pitch for Star Trek, The Original Series by creator Gene Roddenberry, the name Enterprise has been linked with Star Trek since. A second Enterprise made its debut in Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home, the fourth version was introduced in a third season episode of Star Trek, The Next Generation entitled Yesterdays Enterprise. That series was set on the version of the vessel. The missing third Enterprise, prefixed NCC-1701-B, was introduced in Star Trek Generations, following the end of Star Trek, Voyager, which had been used to launch UPN, they were seeking a new Star Trek series. The network contacted Rick Berman during the season of Star Trek, Voyager. Berman had previously been a producer on Voyager, and other series dating back to The Next Generation. Berman contacted Brannon Braga, and the two became the producers on the new show. The new series launched after the end of Voyager, but was set some 150 years before the events seen in The Original Series, the new series was originally called Enterprise, without the Star Trek prefix

A juggernaut, in current English usage, is a literal or metaphorical force regarded as mercilessly destructive and unstoppable. The figurative sense of the word has ground in mechanics comparable to figurative uses of steamroller or battering ram to mean something overwhelming and its ground in social behavior is similar to that of bandwagon, but with overtones of devotional sacrifice. Its British English meaning of a heavy truck or articulated lorry dates from the second half of the twentieth century. The word is derived from the Sanskrit Jagannātha world-lord, combining jagat and natha, balabhadra, also known as Balarama or Baladev, is known to be one of Krishnas greatest worshippers, who was reincarnated as Krishnas elder brother. Others have suggested more prosaically that the deaths, if any, were accidental and caused by the press of the crowd and the general commotion. The term is used literally in Jane Eyre, where one character describes Jane as worse than many a little heathen who says its prayers to Brahma and this suggests that the term would have been fairly widely understood when it was published in 1847. The figurative sense of the English word, with the idea of something that demands blind devotion or merciless sacrifice became common in the mid-nineteenth century, for example, it was used to describe the out-of-control character Hyde in Robert Louis Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Other notable writers to have used the word this way range from H. G. Wells, bill Wilson in Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous describes self-sufficiency in society at large as being a bone-crushing juggernaut whose final achievement is ruin. In 1948, he printed New York City area listings magazine The TeleVision Guide. Silent film star Gloria Swanson, who then starred of the variety series The Gloria Swanson Hour. Wagner later began publishing regional editions of The TeleVision Guide for New England, five years later, he sold the editions to Walter Annenberg, who folded it into his publishing and broadcasting company Triangle Publications, but remained as a consultant for the magazine until 1963. The national TV Guides first issue was released on April 3,1953. The inaugural cover featured a photograph of Lucille Balls newborn son Desi Arnaz, Jr. with a photo of Ball placed in the top corner under the issues headline. The magazine was published in digest size, which remained its printed format for 52 years. The launch as a magazine with local listings in April 1953 became an almost instant success, with TV Guide becoming the most read. The initial cost of issue was 15¢ per copy. In addition to subscriptions, TV Guide was sold at the counters of grocery stores nationwide. Until the 1980s, the pieces included in each issue were promoted in a television commercial. Over the decades, the shape of the TV Guide logo has changed to reflect the modernization of the television screen, at first, the logo had various colored backgrounds until the familiar red background became the standard in the 1960s with occasional changes used for special editions. The magazine was first based in an office in downtown Philadelphia, before moving to more spacious national headquarters in Radnor. The color section was sent to regional printers to be wrapped around the local listing sections. It was under Triangles ownership of WFIL-TV that Dick Clark and American Bandstand came to popularity, most listing entries in the log included program genres after the programs title, while its running time was listed in the synopses. Originally, the majority of programs listed in the log each issue featured brief synopses, except for local and national newscasts, in addition, black-and-white ads for programs scheduled to air on broadcast stations – and later, cable channels – during prime time were included within the listings. A limited edition is restricted in the number of copies produced, although in fact the number may be very low or very high. A special edition implies there is material of some kind included. The term is used on DVD film releases, often when the so-called special edition is actually the only version released. Collectors edition may just be another term for special edition, popular culture widely employs Special, Deluxe, Expanded and Limited Edition in marketing, releasing subsequent, improved versions of film DVDs, music, and video games. Companies widely use special editions and incremental improvements to sell the products to consumers multiple times. In many cases, successful releases have had items made in limited numbers. These limited editions contain the best DVD edition possible of a film with special items in a box set. It is also common to have such items packaged with unique designs, with the success of DVDs, special editions of films themselves have also become fairly common. Sharing similarities with the concept of a directors cut and these generally feature additional in-movie material. The material may be footage originally deleted from the final cut, the Doctor Who television movie The Five Doctors was edited, recut, amongst various other changes, to make the Special Edition in 1999 for the first DVD release of the episode. Limited edition prints, also known as LEs, have been standard in printmaking from the century onwards. A limit to the print run is crucial, as many traditional printmaking techniques can produce a limited number of best quality impressions. Edition sizes higher than about 500 are likely to be of print reproductions of paintings, of less value. As in other fields, the use of the concept has become largely driven by marketing imperatives and these need to be distinguished from the original artists print, carefully produced directly from his work, and printed under the artists supervision. In the United States limited editions are regulated under state consumer protections laws, California became the first state to regulate the sale of limited edition art prints with the California Print Law of 1971. The state of Illinois later expanded on the California statute, however, it was not until 1986 that more comprehensive provisions, still in place today, were enacted with the passage of the Georgia Print Law. That law became the template for statutes subsequently enacted by other states, the Georgia Print Law written by State Representative Chesley V. Morton, became effective July 1,1986. Conspiracy is the 25th episode of the syndicated American science fiction television series Star Trek, The Next Generation, originally aired on May 9,1988, in the United States. The premise was conceived by the shows creator Gene Roddenberry in a single sentence overview titled The Assassins, from this, the teleplay was produced by Tracy Tormé and the episode directed by Cliff Bole. Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures of the crew of the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise-D, numerous make-up effects were created by make-up supervisor Michael Westmore, including an exploding head using raw meat. There were concerns by producers that some of the effects were too graphic, the episode has subsequently been included in some best episode lists of the series, and won one of three Primetime Emmy Awards for The Next Generations first season. Controversial when originally broadcast, it was banned from broadcast in the United Kingdom. While the Enterprise is en route to Pacifica on a mission, Captain Picard receives a highly confidential message from an old friend. Keel refuses to discuss his concerns, even though the frequency he is using is supposed to be a secure channel, once they arrive at Dytallix B for this secret meeting, the crew discover the Horatio and two other Federation ships already present. Picard beams alone to the surface and is met by Captain Keel, Keel reports strange orders from Starfleet headquarters and what he implies are suspicious deaths of Starfleet officers, and expresses concern of a conspiracy. Picard refuses to accept this proof, but Keel warns him to remain wary. When the captain returns to the Enterprise, he is challenged by Counselor Troi about keeping his contact with Keel secret, Picard is skeptical about the conspiracy, but says that he trusts his old friend completely. The Enterprise resumes its previous journey, Picard has Commander Data review all orders issued by Starfleet Command in the past six months. While the ship is still on its way to Pacifica, a disturbance is detected in nearby space, upon investigating this, the Enterprise discovers a mass of debris that surely must be the shattered remains of the Horatio. Data completes his study and finds several strange orders from the levels of Starfleet. Picard informs his staff of the conspiracy theory, and orders the Enterprise to Earth. As it approaches Earth, the Enterprise receives no response from Starfleet Command, eventually, a transmission is received from a trio of Starfleet admirals, Savar, Arron and Admiral Quinn, who recently made an inspection of the Enterprise. They are surprised by the Enterprises presence, but invite Captain Picard, Quinn requests to beam aboard the Enterprise for a tour. Captain Picard recalls being warned by Quinn about some kind of threat to Starfleet when he was last aboard, upon the admirals arrival, Picard discusses matters with him and comes to believe that he is an impostor, or under some sort of alien influence. After warning Riker of his concerns and asking him to watch Quinn, on arrival, Picard is greeted by the other two Admirals who are accompanied by Quinns assistant, Lt. Commander Remmick

Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between two different species, be it mutualistic, commensalistic, or parasitic. In 1879, Heinrich Anton de Bary defined it as the living together of unlike organisms, Symbiosis can be obligatory, which means that one or both of the symbionts entirely depend on each other for survival, or facultative when they can generally live independently. When one organism lives on another such as mistletoe, it is called ectosymbiosis, or endosymbiosis when one partner lives inside the tissues of another, as in Symbiodinium in corals. In 1877, Albert Bernhard Frank used the term symbiosis which previously had used to depict people living together in community to describe the mutualistic relationship in lichens. In 1879, the German mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary defined it as the living together of unlike organisms, symbiotic relationships can be obligate, meaning that one or both of the symbionts entirely depend on each other for survival. For example, in lichens, which consist of fungal and photosynthetic symbionts, the algal or cyanobacterial symbionts in lichens, such as Trentepohlia, can generally live independently, and their symbiosis is, therefore, facultative. Endosymbiosis is any relationship in which one symbiont lives within the tissues of the other, either within the cells or extracellularly. Mutualism or interspecies reciprocal altruism is a relationship between individuals of different species where both individuals benefit, in general, only lifelong interactions involving close physical and biochemical contact can properly be considered symbiotic. Mutualistic relationships may be either obligate for both species, obligate for one but facultative for the other, or facultative for both, a large percentage of herbivores have mutualistic gut flora to help them digest plant matter, which is more difficult to digest than animal prey. This gut flora is made up of cellulose-digesting protozoans or bacteria living in the herbivores intestines, coral reefs are the result of mutualisms between coral organisms and various types of algae which live inside them. Most land plants and land ecosystems rely on mutualisms between the plants, which fix carbon from the air, and mycorrhyzal fungi, which help in extracting water, an example of mutual symbiosis is the relationship between the ocellaris clownfish that dwell among the tentacles of Ritteri sea anemones. The territorial fish protects the anemone from anemone-eating fish, and in turn the stinging tentacles of the anemone protect the clownfish from its predators, a special mucus on the clownfish protects it from the stinging tentacles. A further example is the fish, which sometimes lives together with a shrimp. The shrimp digs and cleans up a burrow in the sand in which both the shrimp and the fish live. The shrimp is almost blind, leaving it vulnerable to predators when outside its burrow, in case of danger the goby fish touches the shrimp with its tail to warn it. When that happens both the shrimp and goby fish quickly retreat into the burrow, different species of gobies also exhibit mutualistic behavior through cleaning up ectoparasites in other fish. Another non-obligate symbiosis is known from encrusting bryozoans and hermit crabs, the bryozoan colony develops a cirumrotatory growth and offers the crab a helicospiral-tubular extension of its living chamber that initially was situated within a gastropod shell. The Neutral Zone (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

The episode originated as a piece of fan fiction by Deborah McIntyre and Mona Clee, and was turned into a teleplay by Maurice Hurley. Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures of the crew of the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D. The episode was received by critics who viewed it after the end of the season, who criticised the two-plot nature of the episode. While Captain Picard is away at an emergency Federation conference, the Enterprise crew discovers an ancient space capsule from Earth, inside they find three humans in cryonic chambers. Data asks to move the chambers to the Enterprise and Commander Riker agrees, Picard returns and orders the Enterprise to the Neutral Zone, as several Federation outposts near the edges of the zone have not responded to communications. He explains that the conference was about the threat of the Romulans. The survivors – Claire Raymond, a housewife, Ralph Offenhouse, a financier, Sonny Clemmons, a musician – are from the late 20th Century. All died of incurable illnesses at the time and were placed in cryogenic suspension after their deaths in the hope that cures might be found in the future, dr. Crusher, in reviving them, easily cures them of their illnesses. They are having to cope with the shock of awakening in a distant future with the realization that everything they knew and had are now gone. Of the three, Clemmons seems to fare the best at adapting to life in the future and befriends Data, Claire is distraught at the thought of losing everyone she ever knew, particularly her children, so Counselor Troi suggests searching for Claires descendants. Offenhouse is irritated by the lack of access to news or other information, Picard comes down to assure everyone that all questions will be answered, but that the ships mission requires Picards full attention. The Enterprise reaches the Neutral Zone and confirms that the outposts have been destroyed and they are soon met by a Romulan Warbird and Commander Tebok questions why the Enterprise has approached the zone. As Picard tries to explain his actions, Offenhouse arrives on the bridge and threatens to disrupt the tense situation, Picard and the Romulans agree to pool their resources to discover the culprit. Picard later comments that while the encounter went favorably, the Romulans may be a significant threat in future engagements, Picard arranges to transport the 20th-Century humans to Earth. Troi locates one of Claires descendants on Earth, and while Claire is unsure of her place in her new reality, Clemmons expresses enthusiasm for the future, and Picard sets Offenhouse the challenge of improving himself. Due to the strike, certain ideas were removed from the plot including the planned first appearance of the Borg which was subsequently delayed until the second season episode Q Who. This was because The Neutral Zone was originally intended to be the first of a two-part episode, the second episode would have seen the Enterprise and the Romulans team up against the Borg. The Klingons are a fictional extraterrestrial humanoid warrior species in the science fiction franchise Star Trek. Klingons are recurring antagonists in the 1960s television series Star Trek, The Original Series, initially intended to be antagonists for the crew of the USS Enterprise, the Klingons became a close ally of humanity and the United Federation of Planets in Star Trek, The Next Generation. In the 1990s series Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, the United Federation of Planets briefly goes to war with the Klingons, later in that series, the two join together with the Romulans to fight the Dominion. As originally developed by screenwriter Gene L. Coon, Klingons were swarthy humanoids characterized mainly by prideful ruthlessness, totalitarian, and with a martial society relying on slave labor, they reflected analogies with both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Although Cold War tensions are apparent in the characterization, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry did not intend any explicit political parallels, among the elements created for the revised Klingons was a complete Klingon language, developed by Marc Okrand from gibberish suggested by actor James Doohan. Spoken Klingon has entered popular culture, even to the extent that the works of William Shakespeare, a dictionary, a book of sayings, and a cultural guide to the language have been published. According to Guinness World Records, Klingon is the worlds most popular language as measured by number of speakers. The Klingons were created by screenwriter Gene L. Coon, and they were named after Lieutenant Wilbur Clingan, who served with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in the Los Angeles Police Department. In the original series, Klingons were typically portrayed with bronze skin and facial hair suggestive of Asian people. The swarthy look of Klingon males was created with the application of shoe polish and long, thin moustaches, the overall look of the aliens, played by white actors, suggested orientalism, at a time when memories of Japanese actions during World War II were still fresh. The production crew never came to an agreement on the name Klingon, Coon was adamant about keeping the name, the Klingons took on the role of the Soviet Union in opposition to the United Federation of Planets playing the role of the United States. As such, they were portrayed as inferior to the crew of the Enterprise. While occasionally capable of honour, this depiction treated the Klingons as close to wild animals, overall, they were shown without redeeming qualities—brutish, scheming, and murderous. Klingons became the primary antagonists of the Enterprise crew, in part because the necessary to make Romulans was too time-consuming. For the first two seasons, no Klingon ships were seen despite being frequently mentioned and this was because of budget constraints— designer Matt Jefferies did not have the money to create a Klingon ship until the third season. When the episodes were remastered beginning in 2006, Klingon ships were digitally inserted into shots earlier than their original appearances, for Star Trek, The Motion Picture, the Klingons were retconned and their appearance and behavior radically changed. To give the aliens a more sophisticated and threatening demeanor, the Klingons were depicted with ridged foreheads, snaggled and prominent teeth, and a defined language and alphabet. The Romulans are an extraterrestrial humanoid species in the science fiction franchise Star Trek. In addition, they have appeared in various media. Throughout the series, they are depicted as antagonists, and are usually at war with or in a tenuous truce with the United Federation of Planets. On extremely rare occasions, they have allied with the Federation, the Romulans also act as a counterpoint to the logical Vulcan race, whom they resemble and with whom they share a common ancestry. As such, the Romulans are characterized as passionate, cunning, the Romulans are the dominant race of the Romulan Star Empire. Although Star Trek Star Charts place the Romulan Empires territory in the Beta Quadrant of the galaxy in Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, the Romulans were created by Paul Schneider, who said it was a matter of developing a good Romanesque set of admirable antagonists. An extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel, the Romulans began as a group of Vulcan revolutionaries who refused to accept the Vulcan philosopher Suraks teachings of the complete suppression of emotions. At some point in their history, this group left the planet Vulcan. In the original series episode Balance of Terror, Spock notes that while the events during the period of Surak are well documented and he does state that he thinks them a likely offshoot of Vulcan. The Next Generation episode The Chase implies that Romulans, Vulcans, Cardassians, Klingons and humans share a common ancestry. Like Vulcans, Romulans have pointed ears, upswept eyebrows, and copper-based blood that is green when oxygenated in the arteries, like Vulcans, Romulans are almost always depicted as having dark or black hair. Romulans share the longevity common to their Vulcan cousins, in Unification, the Romulan Senator Pardek shared a friendship with Ambassador Spock lasting at least 80 years. Romulans also have in common with Vulcans physical strength superior to that of humans, however, the similarities end when it comes to Vulcans mental abilities, which the Romulans do not share, or perhaps lost after their arrival on Romulus. Romulan ale is a popular blue alcoholic beverage which was illegal because of a Federation trade embargo in the late 23rd century through the late 24th century. Despite this, it is traded and consumed openly. Other Romulan drinks include Kali-fal, a drink with an aroma that should forcibly open ones frontal sinuses before the first sip. Romulan fashion of the late 24th century had distinctive squared shoulders, hair is generally cut straight across the brow close to the eyebrows, with longer locks framing the face, cut following the cheekbones, a style reminiscent of a helmet. Ferengi

The Ferengi /fəˈrɛŋɡi/ are a fictional extraterrestrial race from the Star Trek universe. They and their culture are characterized by an obsession with profit and trade. They are also known for their business acumen and for rampant misogyny, notable Ferengi characters include Quark, Rom, Nog, Ishka, Zek, and Brunt, all of whom were featured prominently in Star Trek, Deep Space Nine. Their home planet, Ferenginar, is the center of the Ferengi Alliance and is governed by the Grand Nagus, thus, Paramount repurposed them as a one-dimensional nuisance, and plots involving them were usually comedic ones. Paramount instead revived the Romulans at the end of season one, Star Trek, The Next Generation first featured the three original Ferengi in the episode titled The Last Outpost. The original three Ferengi names were Letek, Mordoc, and Kayron, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine is the series focusing the most on the Ferengi. Armin Shimerman joined the regular cast of the show as Ferengi bartender Quark, other Ferengi also appeared on the show, most notably Quarks brother Rom and Roms son Nog. Nog would later become the first ever Ferengi in Starfleet, Deep Space Nine, therefore, featured many episodes that centered around the Ferengi and explored their culture in depth. It was on Deep Space Nine that Ferenginar was first seen, the Ferengi are a humanoid species, somewhat smaller than the average human, usually reaching approximately 1.5 meters in height. Ferengi have unusually large ears, which are pronounced in males than in females. Due to the size of their ears, they can also sense sudden atmospheric, an ear infection is excruciatingly painful, and can easily prove fatal to even an otherwise healthy Ferengi if they dont seek the appropriate treatment in time. The ears, at least in males, are erogenous zones, the exact meaning is unclear, since according to the Ferengi, there is no direct translation for the word into any Human language. The Ferengi also colloquially use the word lobes much as the words brains or balls are used in modern English. The ears are used as a colloquial description of a Ferengi, similar to the use of ass in modern English. Data once mentioned Ferengi being stronger than they appear, however, as shown in Looking for parMach in All the Wrong Places Ferengi have a great disdain for fair combat which causes them to appear physically weaker than they are. Ferengi teeth resemble jagged spikes, and they use a hand-held tooth sharpener to maintain them, generally, whenever Ferengi are assaulted, injured, or in some kind of general distress, they emit a shrill scream. Ferengi physiology is such that they seem to have an immunity to certain drugs. Even after several injections, it was shown that Quark was completely unaffected by the truth serum, the Ferengi originate from the planet Ferenginar, in the center of the Ferengi Alliance located in the Alpha Quadrant

Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit. Characteristics central to capitalism include private property, capital accumulation, wage labor, voluntary exchange, a price system, economists, political economists, and historians have adopted different perspectives in their analyses of capitalism and have recognized various forms of it in practice. These include laissez-faire or free market capitalism, welfare capitalism, different forms of capitalism feature varying degrees of free markets, public ownership, obstacles to free competition, and state-sanctioned social policies. Most existing capitalist economies are mixed economies, which elements of free markets with state intervention. Capitalism has existed under many forms of government, in different times, places. Following the decline of mercantilism, mixed capitalist systems became dominant in the Western world, Capitalism has been criticized for prioritizing profit over social good, natural resources, and the environment, and that is a cause of inequality and economic instabilities. Supporters believe that it provides better products through competition, and creates strong economic growth, the term capitalist, meaning an owner of capital, appears earlier than the term capitalism. It dates back to the mid-17th century, capitalist is derived from capital, which evolved from capitale, a late Latin word based on caput, meaning head – also the origin of chattel and cattle in the sense of movable property. Capitale emerged in the 12th to 13th centuries in the sense of referring to funds, stock of merchandise, sum of money, by 1283 it was used in the sense of the capital assets of a trading firm. It was frequently interchanged with a number of other words – wealth, money, funds, goods, assets, property, the Hollandische Mercurius uses capitalists in 1633 and 1654 to refer to owners of capital. In French, Étienne Clavier referred to capitalistes in 1788, six years before its first recorded English usage by Arthur Young in his work Travels in France, David Ricardo, in his Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, referred to the capitalist many times. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, an English poet, used capitalist in his work Table Talk, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon used the term capitalist in his first work, What is Property. To refer to the owners of capital, benjamin Disraeli used the term capitalist in his 1845 work Sybil. The initial usage of the term capitalism in its modern sense has been attributed to Louis Blanc in 1850, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels referred to the capitalistic system. And to the capitalist mode of production in Das Kapital, the use of the word capitalism in reference to an economic system appears twice in Volume I of Das Kapital, p.124, and in Theories of Surplus Value, tome II, p.493. Marx did not extensively use the form capitalism but instead those of capitalist, and capitalist mode of production, also according to the OED, Carl Adolph Douai, a German-American socialist and abolitionist, used the phrase private capitalism in 1863. Jeff Coopwood is an American actor, singer, broadcaster and educator. Coopwood was born in Chicago, Illinois to Louise Riley and Jesse Coopwood and his mother was a former gospel radio broadcaster, and talk show hostess in markets from Chicago and Texas, to Miami, Florida. She had also been an actress, who understudied Eartha Kitt in Mrs. Patterson on Broadway and a model, charm school owner, for decades, his father, Jesse Coopwood, was a legendary jazz and talk radio broadcaster in Gary, Indiana. Although born in Chicago, he grew up in Miami, Florida and his senior year, he was named Best Actor in the State of Florida by the International Thespian Society. He was also a three-time state speech and debate champion and two-time national speech, Coopwood graduated from the University of Miami, a private university in Coral Gables, Florida, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre. Upon graduation, he appeared across the country in the Broadway National Tour of Timbuktu, starring the legendary Eartha Kitt, and subsequently starred in several major stage productions in theatres throughout the United States and Canada. Moving to Los Angeles, he studied broadcast journalism and television production at the University of California, for several years, he was a regular host of the pledge drives for the PBS member television station in Los Angeles, KCET. He also obtained a Master of Arts degree, with distinction, from the California State University, Dominguez Hills, in Carson, as an alumnus, he has also hosted several public events for that alma mater. His work has included stage, television, film, commercials, broadcasting, and he has been an Emmy nominee for his voice-over work and a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Coopwood is one of the few performers to list work on both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises among his credits and his most notable voiceover work includes voicing the role of the Borg, in the film Star Trek, First Contact. His voice was used for the films Borg speech ending with the now iconic line and his performance was digitally layered through multiple original takes to create the unique Borg effect. Sir Patrick Stewart OBE is an English actor whose career has included roles on stage, television, and film in a career spanning almost six decades. In 1993, TV Guide named Stewart the Best Dramatic Television Actor of the 1980s, in 2010, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to drama. He has two brothers, Geoffrey and Trevor. Stewart grew up in a household with domestic violence from his father. He spent much of his childhood in Jarrow, as a result of his wartime experience during the Dunkirk evacuation, his father suffered from what was then known as combat fatigue. In a 2008 interview, Stewart said, My father was a very potent individual, a powerful man. It was said that when he strode onto the parade ground and it was many, many years before I realized how my father inserted himself into my work. Ive grown a moustache for Macbeth and my father didnt have one, but when I looked in the mirror just before I went on stage I saw my fathers face staring straight back at me. Stewart attended Crowlees Church of England Junior and Infants School and he attributes his acting career to a teacher of English named Cecil Dormand, who put a copy of Shakespeare in my hand said, Now get up on your feet and perform. In 1951, aged 11, having failed the examination, he entered Mirfield Secondary Modern School. Around the same time he met the actor Brian Blessed at a Mytholmroyd drama course, at the age of 15, Stewart left school and increased his participation in local theatre. His brother tells the story that Stewart had been attending rehearsals during work time, Stewart also trained as a boxer. At the age of eighteen, he lost his hair due to suffering from Alopecia areata, an experience he found traumatic, for him, acting served as a means of self-expression. Both Stewart and his friend Blessed later received grants to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, following a period with Manchesters Library Theatre, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, remaining with them until 1982. He was an Associate Artist of the company in 1968 and he appeared with actors such as Ben Kingsley and Ian Richardson. In January 1967, he made his debut TV appearance on Coronation Street as a Fire Officer and he made his Broadway debut as Snout in Peter Brooks legendary production of A Midsummer Nights Dream, then moved to the Royal National Theatre in the early 1980s. Jean-Luc Picard is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise, most often seen as Captain of the starship USS Enterprise-D. He is most notably portrayed by actor Patrick Stewart, after the success of the contemporary Star Trek feature films, a new Star Trek television series featuring a new cast was announced on October 10,1986. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry named Picard for one or both of the twin brothers Auguste Piccard and Jean Felix Piccard, 20th-century Swiss scientists, Patrick Stewart, who has a background of theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Company, was initially considered for the role of Data. Roddenberry did not want to cast Stewart as Picard, since he had envisioned an actor who was masculine, virile and he had his toupee delivered from London to meet with Paramount executives, but Roddenberry ordered Stewart to remove the awful looking hairpiece. Stewarts stentorian voice impressed the executives, who approved the casting. As the series progressed, Stewart exercised more control over the characters development, there was a sort of double action that occurred. In one sense Picard was expanding like this and at the time he was also growing closer and closer to me as well. I became a better listener than I ever had been as a result of playing Jean Luc Picard because it was one of the things that he does terrifically well, Stewart stated, however, that he is not nearly as serious or brooding as his alter ego. Stewart also stated, One of the delights of having done this series, several years after the series has ended. I enjoy hearing how much people enjoyed the work we did and its always gratifying to me that this bald, middle-aged Englishman seems to connect with them. Stewart has also commented that his role has helped open up Shakespeare to science fiction fans. He has noted the presence of Trekkies in the audience whenever he plays theater. And they say, Ive never seen Shakespeare before, I didnt think Id understand it, jean-Luc Picard was born to Maurice and Yvette Picard in La Barre, France, on 13 July 2305, and he dreamed of joining Starfleet. He and the rest of his family speak English, with English accents—the French language having become obscure by the 24th century, as mentioned in the Next Generation episode Code of Honor. Shortly after graduation, Picard was stabbed in the heart by a Nausicaan, leaving the organ irreparable and requiring replacement with a parthenogenetic implant, Picard eventually served as first officer aboard the USS Stargazer, which he later commanded. During that time, he invented a warp-speed starship battle tactic that would become known as the Picard Maneuver, though such resolutions are usually peaceful, Picard is also shown using his remarkable tactical cunning in situations when it is required. TV Land is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by Viacom Global Entertainment Group, a unit of the Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom. The network is headquartered at One Astor Plaza in New York City, as of July 2015, TV Land is available to approximately 91.432 million pay television households in the United States. TV Land launched on April 29,1996, as a 24-hour offshoot of Nickelodeons successful nighttime classic television block Nick at Nite, until the end of 1996, it was branded as Nick at Nites TV Land to provide reassurance to new viewers of who was behind the channel. Programs featured on the network during its year included Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, The Ed Sullivan Show, Gunsmoke, That Girl. TV Land also initially ran a block of detective series every Saturday, including Honey West, Dog and Cat, Burkes Law, the 1981 Nero Wolfe series, shortly after TV Lands debut, MCA filed a lawsuit against Viacom. MCA claimed that the intention of TV Land was to compete directly with USA, Viacom claimed that the matter had already been settled when Sumner Redstone released Frank Biondi from his contract to let him work at MCA. The suit was settled when Viacom agreed to sell its 50% stake in USA Networks to MCA. In 1997, TV Land partnered with TV Guide for a feature in the magazine, in 1999, TV Land entered into a deal with Universal Television that allowed the channel to cherry-pick from a variety of series including Emergency. Kojak, and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, in February 1999, according to Nielsen ratings data, TV Land averaged a 1.0 share during primetime, tying ESPN for 10th place among all cable networks. Its siblings, MTV and VH1, respectively tied for 17th and 26th place, TV Land celebrated its 10th anniversary on April 29,2006. The networks original continuity announcer was DJ Dan Ingram, Ingram was replaced by Harry Shearer, in 2008, TV Land added a three-hour block of infomercials to its morning lineup, airing Monday through Fridays from 6,00 to 9,00 a. m. Eastern Time. m. with reruns filling the 8,00 a. m. hour, in 2007, the network began adding series from the latter part of the 1980s and on in an effort to attract viewers in the 18 to 49 age demographic favored by advertisers. The Deadly Assassin

It is the first story to feature the Doctor without a companion, with Sarah Jane Smith departing in the previous story and Leela joining in the next story. This serial also re-introduces the Doctors long time nemesis, the Master, for the first time since Frontier in Space, in this story played by Peter Pratt. The Fourth Doctor has arrived on Gallifrey after receiving a summons from the Time Lords. As soon as the TARDIS materialises within the Citadel, it is surrounded by the Chancellery Guard, commander Hilred reports to Castellan Spandrell, noting the TARDIS is a Type 40 time capsule, which is no longer in service. The soldiers are ordered to impound the TARDIS and arrest the occupant, the Doctor realises that the Time Lords did not summon him. Spandrell goes to see Coordinator Engin in the Archives Section, Hilred and his troops enter the TARDIS, but the Doctor sneaks out and makes his way to a service lift that leads to the main tower. A soldier who threatens to place the Doctor under arrest is killed by a figure who disappears. All of this has been observed by the Doctors old adversary, Chancellor Goth arrives outside the TARDIS. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor is watching a news broadcast by a reporter he recognises as Runcible, the President is set to retire and to name a successor. Runcible is talking to Cardinal Borusa, one of the Doctors former teachers, the TARDIS is transducted to the museum within the Capitol, and the Doctor borrows Gallifreyan robes. Several floors beneath the tower, the Master, severely emaciated. He says the trap has been set and they must make sure the Doctor dies quickly, at the Panopticon, a Gallifreyan quasi-ceremonial chamber, the disguised Doctor converses with Runcible before the outgoing President appears. The Doctor notes a camera stationed on an unguarded catwalk and he also spots a sniper rifle next to the camera. The Doctor fights his way to the catwalk, warning that the President is about to be killed, unbeknownst to the Doctor, the assassin is among the delegates and shoots the President dead. However, the sees the Doctor on the catwalk with the rifle. Under interrogation, the Doctor maintains that he has been framed, eventually, Spandrell starts to believe him and orders Engin to assist him in an independent investigation. To delay his execution, the Doctor invokes Article 17, he will run for President. The Doctor returns to the scene of the crime with Spandrell and they discover that the sight on the sniper rifle was distorted, making it virtually impossible for this weapon to have killed the President

The Master is a recurring character in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its associated spin-off works. The character is a renegade alien Time Lord and the archenemy of the character the Doctor. The Master has been played by actors since the characters introduction in 1971. The role was originated by Roger Delgado, Delgado portrayed the Master from 1971 until his death in 1973. From 1976 until the cancellation in 1989, the Master was portrayed by a succession of actors, Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beevers. Gordon Tipple and Eric Roberts then took on the role for the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie, since the shows revival in 2005, the Master has been portrayed by Derek Jacobi, John Simm and Michelle Gomez. The creative team conceived the Master as a recurring villain and he first appeared in Terror of the Autons. The Masters title was chosen by producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks because, like the Doctor. The brief given in a sketch of the three new characters for 1971 suggested he was conceived to be of equal, perhaps even superior rank, to the Doctor. Barry Letts had one man in mind for the role, Roger Delgado, an unrelated character called the Master of the Land of Fiction had previously appeared in the 1968 Doctor Who serial The Mind Robber opposite the Second Doctor. In The End of Time, the Master repeats this story himself, the Chancellor describes the rhythm as something istory says a torment that stayed with him for the rest of his life. Also in The End of Time, Rassilon identifies the signal to be a Time Lords heartbeat, in The Sound of Drums, the Tenth Doctor describes the Master as a friend at first, explaining in The Sea Devils He used to be a friend of mine once. In fact, you might almost say we were at school together, a memory of their time together in childhood was recalled by the Master in The End of Time Part One, I had estates. Do you remember my fathers land back home, pastures of red grass, stretching far across the slopes of Mount Perdition. We used to run across those fields all day, calling up at the sky, the Master, played by Roger Delgado, makes his first appearance in Terror of the Autons where he employs the Nestene Consciousness. Delgados last appearance as the Master was in Frontier in Space, where he worked alongside the Daleks, but the scheme failed and the Master escaped after he shot at the Doctor. Delgado was slated to return in a serial called The Final Game, however, he died in a car crash in June 1973 and the story was never filmed. Space,1999 is a British science-fiction television series that ran for two seasons and originally aired from 1975 to 1977. The series was the last production by the partnership of Gerry, the first series was co-produced by the British television ITC and the Italian television RAI, while the second series was produced solely by ITC. Two series of the programme were produced, each comprising twenty-four episodes, Production of the first series was from November 1973 to February 1975, production of the second series was from January 1976 to December 1976. The premise of Space,1999 centres on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, a scientific research centre on the Moon. The force of the blast propels the Moon like an enormous booster rocket, hurling it out of Earth orbit and into space at colossal speed. The runaway Moon, in effect, becomes the spacecraft on which the protagonists travel, not long after leaving Earths solar system, the wandering Moon passes through a black hole and later through a couple of space warps which push it even further out into the universe. During their interstellar journey, the Alphans encounter an array of alien civilizations, dystopian societies, several episodes of the first series hinted that the Moons journey was influenced by a mysterious unknown force, which was guiding the Alphans toward an ultimate destiny. The second series used more simplified action-oriented plots, the first series of Space,1999 used a teaser introduction, sometimes called a hook or cold open. This was followed by a sequence that managed to convey prestige for its two main stars, Landau and Bain, and to give the audience some thirty-plus fast cut shots of the forthcoming episode. The second series eliminated this montage, the programme would then offer four ten-to-twelve minute long acts and finished with a short epilogue scene. The headline stars of Space,1999 were American actors Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, also appearing as regular cast members were the Canadian-based British actor Barry Morse and Hungarian-born, US-raised Catherine Schell. Before moving into the role of Maya during the second series, the programme also brought Australian actor Nick Tate to public attention. The English actor Nicholas Young appeared in an episode of Year Two, Space,1999 owes much of the visual design to pre-production work for the never-made second series of UFO, which would have been set primarily on the Moon and featured a more extensive Moonbase. Space,1999 drew a great deal of inspiration from the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film 2001. The programmes special effects director Brian Johnson had previously worked on both Thunderbirds and 2001, in 1972, Sir Lew Grade, head of ITC Entertainment, proposed financing a second series of the Century 21 production UFO to show-runners Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. In the meantime, Production Designer Keith Wilson and the art department had made progress in envisioning the look. Their work was shelved for the foreseeable future. Maya (Space: 1999)

Maya is a fictional character created by writer producer Freddie Frieberger, who appeared in the second series of the science fiction television program Space,1999. Played by actress Catherine Schell, Maya was introduced in the series opener The Metamorph. Maya is in her twenties, and is a native of the planet Psychon. Maya is the daughter of the accomplished Psychon scientist Mentor, her mother had died before the events depicted in The Metamorph and she had one brother, also a scientist, who sat with their father on Psychons High Scientific Council. Maya recounts her upbringing as essentially idyllic, the planet Psychon had a peaceful and happy culture. Its people were all of one race, one religion and one government, with an over-abundance of natural resources, the world of her youth was soon lost in an environmental disaster, intense volcanic activity laid waste to the entire planet. The escalation of the temperature to an average 180 degrees Fahrenheit made life there impossible. The surviving Psychons were forced to retreat to underground compounds to survive, for some unknown reason, the Psychons were unable to manipulate the environment to save their world, Mayas brother and a thousand others instead opted to build spaceships and leave Psychon. All other Psychons followed their example, and ultimately Mentor and Maya were left alone on the dying planet, Mentor remained, believing he could restore Psychon with the help of his biological computer Psyche. Psyche, capable of transformation, drew its power from the mental energy of intelligent beings. Unknown to Maya, rapport with Psyche left its victims brain-damaged, Mentor intimated that he may have used not only those space travellers unfortunate enough to approach Psychon as fodder for Psyche, but some of his own people as well. The arrival in the Psychon system of Earths wandering Moon and its 297 human inhabitants gave Mentor his best opportunity to fulfill his dream, mentors attempt to capture the Alphans failed, Psyche was attacked by Commander Koenig and fatally damaged. The energy released destroyed the already unstable planet, Mentor elected to stay behind and perished in the explosion, but Koenig and company managed to escape with Maya and brought her to Moonbase Alpha to live with the Alphans. In appearance, Maya is a young woman with auburn hair. A brown peak extends down from her hairline and identical brown colouring under her cheekbones resembles sideburns and her eyebrows are a line of wart-like octopods that are a distinctive genetic characteristic of the Psychon race. Maya is a brilliant intellect and has lightning-fast computational skills, she has proven to be quicker than Alphas Main Computer and she has proven to be an able pilot and accompanies many of the exploratory missions. Maya is a fully emotional being throughout the series and she has an impish sense of humor and sometimes uses her powers as a metamorph to play practical jokes. She tends to be a bit too trusting of others, perhaps due to her sheltered upbringing and she enjoys a playfully flirtatious romantic connection to Tony Verdeschi and enjoys teasing him about the lack of quality of his homemade beer

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

A toy line was also produced by Mattel, and during each episode there was a segment that included visual and audio material which interacted with the toys. Plans to bring the back, set 15 years after the first series, were announced in July 2016. Goddard’s Goddard Film Group, headed by Gary Goddard, one of the original series co-creators, is one of the development team of the new series. The storyline was set on Earth in the 22nd century following the Metal Wars, Captain Jonathan Power and a small group of guerrilla fighters, called The Soldiers Of The Future, oppose the machine forces that dominate Earth. Each episode began with the introduction, plus a recap of the storyline. Actor Timothy Dunigan, outfitted in his characters full regalia, turned to the camera, voiceover artist Brad Crandall, By the year 2132, advanced robotic soldiers known as Bio-Mechs had replaced humans in the armed forces of the worlds nations. The existence of Bio-Mechs meant that wars could be fought without significant loss of life, a group of scientists, led by Dr. It required an equivalent to human brain patterns to become operational, but Dr. Powers closest associate, Dr. Lyman Taggart, became impatient with the slow pace of the project and hooked himself up to the system, bringing the supercomputer to operational status. OverMind achieves self-awareness and shares Taggarts beliefs as they take over Bio-Mech armies throughout the world, world governments turn to Dr. Power for find a way to stop Taggart. He develops the Power Suits, a combination of body armor and advanced weapons. However, Power apparently dies trying to rescue his son Jonathan from Taggart, Taggart himself is severely wounded, and OverMind saves him by implanting cybernetic mechanisms into his body, eventually calling himself Lord Dread. Advanced Bio-Mechs called Bio-Dreads and humans loyal to Dread carry out the extermination, as Dread rules from his headquarters in Volcania, despite the dire situation, a number of human forces band together and fight the Bio-Dread Empire. One of the human resistance groups, Jonathan Powers Power Team. It is later revealed there are human resistance groups in other locations. During the shows season, there was a story arc involving Project New Order, Lord Dreads plan to eradicate human life. Captain Powers group uses a system of teleportation portals, called transit gates, however, at the conclusion of the first season, Lord Dread breaks the gatess access codes and sends forces to assault the base. J. Michael Straczynski was the writer of the last episode of the series and he commented about Pilots death, revealing that the scene was inspired by an especially tragic event in his own past. This is a list of characters from the science fiction television series Star Trek, The Next Generation. Characters are ordered alphabetically by name, and only characters who played a significant recurring role in the series are listed. Lieutenant Commander Jack R. Crusher was portrayed by actor Doug Wert, dead before the series beginning, Crusher is the late husband to Beverly Crusher and father of Wesley Crusher, and former second officer aboard the USS Stargazer, Jean-Luc Picards first command. He was killed in action at the age of 32 Earth years, Crusher assured Picard she had signed on the Enterprise-D voluntarily and not due to Picards influence. Jack Crusher once made a recording of himself in which he explained his life. Crusher intended this to be the first in a series of messages, one couple of years. By the time Wesley first got to view the recording, Jack was already long dead and she also appears in the TNG films Star Trek Generations and Star Trek, Nemesis but is uncredited in both. The character first appears in the opening episode The Child. She is said to have the closest relationship with Jean-Luc Picard, Goldberg hoped to play the new ships doctor after Gates McFadden was fired, but the producers did not see her as suitable for the role. They did not think a suitable role could be created, until Goldberg said that she did not care how big or small the role was, even if she just swept the floor in the background. It was from this they decided to give her the role of a bartender and her people, the El-Aurians, are sometimes called the listeners. As a refugee aboard the El-Aurian vessel Lakul, she is rescued from the Nexus by the USS Enterprise-B in the film Star Trek Generations, in Q Who, Guinan states that when the Borg destroyed her homeworld her people were scattered throughout the galaxy. The subsequent diaspora and reintegration of her people, and even their traditional clothing and her species is long-lived, and she is somewhere between 500 and 700 years old when she joins the Enterprise-D. Times Arrow, Part I reveals that she visited Earth in 1891, Guinan reveals in Star Trek, Nemesis that she has been married 23 times. She states in Evolution that she has children, including a son who went through a phase when he wouldnt listen to anybody – something unusual in a species of listeners. Her wise counsel occasionally proves to be valuable to the crew. In one episode, for example, she tries to show Troi that she has other abilities she can use when Trois confidence is shaken because her telepathic powers stop working temporarily. In particular, she and Picard are especially close, to where they trust one another implicitly and she does indicate that Picard stood by her at a time when she was in serious trouble and that their relationship is beyond friendship, beyond family

Seven of Nine is a fictional character who appears in seasons four through seven of the American science fiction television series Star Trek, Voyager. Portrayed by Jeri Ryan, she is a former Borg drone who joins the crew of the Federation starship Voyager and her full Borg designation is Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One. Seven was introduced in the part of the episode Scorpion. The character continued to appear throughout the series until the final episode, stories related to her relationships with Captain Janeway and The Doctor appeared throughout the series, and she was involved in a romantic relationship with Chakotay towards the end of season seven. Several episodes such as The Raven explored her background and younger life as Annika Hansen before she was assimilated by the Borg, following the third season of Star Trek, Voyager, the production team decided that the main cast character of Kes was to be dropped from the show. It was decided that Captain Kathryn Janeway needed a contrasting character, in addition, it had been a previous Star Trek staple to have a character that could provide a third-person view on the human condition. Prior examples had been Spock in Star Trek, The Original Series and Data in Star Trek, after being cast, actress Jeri Ryan acknowledged she had hardly even seen Star Trek, and had no idea what the Borg were. To prepare her, the gave her a copy of Star Trek, First Contact. She was specifically not to base her performance on the Borg Queen from the film as she was a completely different animal and were creating something entirely new. Her acting experience up until this point had consisted of television movies and her audition process consisted of two readings for the producers, before Ryan was asked to come in to talk through the part with the executive producers, Jeri Taylor, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. Following this, she tested for the network and was told that her option had been picked up and she remarked of her experience of joining the team on Voyager, It was a little awkward since the cast had been together for three years already. And one of the characters was being written out pretty much at the same time I was being added. But the cast was terrific, and very welcoming and her hairstyling usually took as long as that combined. The Star Trek Encyclopedia, A Reference Guide to the Future is a 1994 encyclopedia of in-universe information from the Star Trek television series and films. It was written by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda, who were production staff on Star Trek, The Next Generation, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine and Star Trek, Voyager and it was illustrated by Doug Drexler. The Encyclopedia features highly detailed information about characters, planets, technologies and ships of the Star Trek franchise as well as brief episode and it is organised alphabetically and is replete with illustrations, many of which are in color in later editions. As a rule, the Encyclopedia exclusively covers material from the television series and the motion pictures. It does however include some material from Star Trek, The Animated Series, given that this information is part of an officially-licensed publication but not actually included in any Star Trek movie or television episode, its canonicity is disputed. Some entries in the Encyclopedia contain behind-the-scenes information, presented in italicized text, unlike the Star Trek, The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Encyclopedia makes no detailed speculations about Star Trek technology. Michael Okuda developed a worksheet on which to record titles, episode production numbers, stardates. Three print editions have been published to date, in hardcover and paperback, the first edition was published in 1994, the second in 1997. The print version was complemented by a similar electronic version. The CD-ROM medium allowed the Simon & Schuster publishers to include video clips and it was released for both Windows and Macintosh, which was published by Simon & Schuster Interactive. This was the version of the encyclopedia not to be published by Pocket Books. Paramount Pictures is the owner of the copyright, there had long been no plans to release an updated version of the Encyclopedia, as its usefulness had been superseded in recent years by online, digital resources such as Memory Alpha. During the August 2015 annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, a version of the Encyclopedia was announced for publication in 2016. The total pages for this version is 1,056 pages. Star Trek, The Motion Picture is a 1979 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the first Star Trek film and stars the cast of the original 1966–1969 Star Trek television series, the film is set in the twenty-third century when a mysterious and immensely powerful alien cloud known as VGer approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Kirk resumes command of his previous starship—the recently refitted USS Enterprise—to lead it on a mission to save the planet, when the original television series was cancelled in 1969, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry lobbied Paramount to continue the franchise through a film. The success of the series in syndication convinced the studio to work on a feature film in 1975. A series of writers attempted to craft a suitably epic script, Paramount instead planned on returning the franchise to its roots with a new television series, Star Trek, Phase II. With the cancellation of Phase II, writers rushed to adapt its planned pilot episode, In Thy Image, constant revisions to the story and shooting script continued to the extent of hourly script updates on shooting dates. The Enterprise was modified inside and out, costume designer Robert Fletcher provided new uniforms, Jerry Goldsmith composed the score, beginning an association with Star Trek that would continue until 2002. The final production cost ballooned to approximately $46 million, the film earned $139 million worldwide, falling short of studio expectations but enough for Paramount to propose a cheaper sequel. Roddenberry was forced out of control for The Wrath of Khan. In 2001, Wise oversaw a directors cut for a special DVD release of the film, with remastered audio, tightened and added scenes, and new computer-generated effects. In 2273, a Starfleet monitoring station, Epsilon Nine, detects an alien force, hidden in a cloud of energy. The cloud destroys three of the Klingon Empires new Ktinga-class warships and the station en route. On Earth, the starship Enterprise is undergoing a refit, her former commanding officer, James T. Kirk, has been promoted to Admiral. Starfleet dispatches Enterprise to investigate the cloud entity as the ship is the one in intercept range. Kirk takes command of the ship citing his experience, angering Captain Willard Decker, testing of Enterprises new systems goes poorly, two officers, including the science officer, are killed by a malfunctioning transporter, and improperly calibrated engines almost destroy the ship. Kirks unfamiliarity with the new systems of the Enterprise increases the tension between him and first officer Decker, Enterprise intercepts the energy cloud and is attacked by an alien vessel within. A probe appears on the bridge, attacks Spock and abducts the navigator and she is replaced by a robotic replica, another probe sent by VGer to study the crew. Decker is distraught over the loss of Ilia, with whom he had a romantic history and he becomes troubled as he attempts to extract information from the doppelgänger, which has Ilias memories and feelings buried within

William Shatner is a Canadian actor, author, producer, and director. In his seven decades of television, Shatner became an icon for his portrayal of James T. Kirk, Captain of the USS Enterprise. He has written a series of books chronicling his experiences playing Captain Kirk and being a part of Star Trek and he has written a series of science fiction novels called TekWar, which were adapted for television. Shatner also appeared in the NBC series, 3rd Rock from the Sun in seasons 4 and 5 as the role of the Big Giant Head whom the characters of the Series reported to. He has worked as a musician, an author, a director, and he starred as attorney Denny Crane in the final season of the legal drama The Practice and its spinoff series Boston Legal, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards. Shatner was born on March 22,1931, in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the son of Anne and Joseph Shatner and he has two sisters, Joy and Farla. His paternal grandfather, Wolf Schattner, anglicized the name to Shatner. All of Shatners grandparents were Jewish immigrants, and he was raised in Conservative Judaism, Shatner attended two schools in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Willingdon Elementary School and Westhill High School, and is an alumnus of the Montreal Childrens Theatre. He studied Economics at the McGill University Faculty of Management in Montreal, Canada, in June 2011, McGill University awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Letters. Shatner began performing at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, in 1954, he was cast as Ranger Bob on The Canadian Howdy Doody Show. Shatner was an understudy to Christopher Plummer, the two would appear as adversaries in Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country. Shatner had a role in an Alfred Hitchcock Presents third-season episode titled The Glass Eye. In 1959, he received good reviews when he played the role of Lomax in the Broadway production of The World of Suzie Wong. He appeared twice as Wayne Gorham in NBCs Outlaws Western series with Barton MacLane, in 1961, he starred in the Broadway play A Shot in the Dark with Julie Harris and directed by Harold Clurman. Walter Matthau and Gene Saks were also featured in this play, Shatner featured in two episodes of the NBC television series Thriller and the film The Explosive Generation. Guthrie had called the young Shatner the Stratford Festivals most promising actor, Shatner was not as successful as the others, however, and during the 1960s he became a working actor who showed up on time, knew his lines, worked cheap and always answered his phone. His motto was Work equals work, but Shatners willingness to take any role, no matter how forgettable, in the 1963–1964 season, he appeared in episodes of two ABC series, Channing and The Outer Limits. Starlog

Starlog was a monthly science fiction magazine that was created in 1976 and focused primarily on Star Trek at its inception. Kerry O’Quinn and Norman Jacobs were its creators and it was published by Starlog Group, Inc. in August 1976. Starlog was one of the first publications to report on the development of the first Star Wars movie, and it followed the development of what was to eventually become Star Trek, The Motion Picture. Starlog was born out of the Star Trek fandom craze, but also was inspired by the success of the magazine Cinefantastique which was the model of Star Trek, Starlog, though it called itself a science fiction magazine, actually contained no fiction. The magazine examined the form of fiction and used interviews and features with artists. In later years many of its long-time contributors had moved on, nonetheless, it continued to boast genre journalists such as Jean-Marc Lofficier, Will Murray, and Tom Weaver. Starlog ended its run as a magazine published by The Brooklyn Company. In April 2009, Starlog officially ended its time in print, though no new issues were created, all the past issues have been uploaded by users and are downloadable in multiple formats. In the mid-1970s, Kerry OQuinn and his school friend David Houston talked about creating a magazine that would cover science fiction films. OQuinn came up the idea of publishing a magazine on the Star Trek phenomenon. Houstons editorial assistant, Kirsten Russell, suggested that include an episode guide to all three seasons of the show, interviews with the cast, and previously unpublished photographs. During this brainstorming session many questions were raised, most notably legal issues, Houston contacted Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry with the intention of interviewing him for the magazine. OQuinn realized they could create a magazine that featured only Star Trek content, but without its being the focus and he also realized this could be the science fiction magazine he and Houston had talked about. Many titles for the new magazine were suggested, including Fantastic Films and Starflight, the first issue of Starlog, scheduled as a quarterly, was dated August 1976. The issue sold out, and this encouraged OQuinn and Jacobs to publish a magazine every six weeks instead of quarterly, OQuinn was the magazines editor, while Jacobs ran the business side of things, dealing with typesetters, engravers and printers. One of the milestones was its 100th issue, published in November 1985. It featured the 100 most important people in science fiction as determined by the editors and this included exclusive interviews with John Carpenter, Peter Cushing, George Lucas, Harlan Ellison, Leonard Nimoy, and Gene Roddenberry.
