Brampton

Brampton is a city in Southern Ontario, Canada. It is a city in the Greater Toronto Area and the seat of Peel Region. The city has a population of 593,638 as of the Canada 2016 Census, Brampton is Canadas ninth-most populous municipality and the third most populous city in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Region, behind Toronto and Mississauga. Brampton was incorporated as a village in 1853, taking its name from the town of Brampton, in Cumbria. The city was known as The Flower Town of Canada. Prior to the 1800s, all business in Chinguacousy Township took place at Martin Salisburys tavern. One mile distant at the corner of Main and Queen streets, now the centre of Brampton. At the time, the area was referred to as Buffys Corners, by 1834, John Elliott laid out the area in lots for sale, calling it Brampton, which was soon adopted by others. In 1853, an agricultural fair was set up by the newly initiated County Agricultural Society of the County of Peel. Grains, produce, roots, and dairy products were up for sale, horses and cattle, along with other lesser livestock, were also sold at market. This agricultural fair eventually became the modern Brampton Fall Fair, in that same year Brampton was incorporated as a village. By 1869, Brampton, with a population of 1800, was the county town of Peel in the Township of Chinguacousy and it was a Station of the Grand Trunk Railway. The County buildings were erected c.1869 of freestone and white brick, a federal grant allowed the village to found its first public library in 1887, which included 360 volumes from the Mechanics Institute. The Carnegie libraries were built on the basis of coming up with matching funds. A group of farmers in Brampton had trouble getting insurance from city-based companies. After several meetings in Clairville Hall, they decided to found the County of Peel Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, in 1955, when the company moved to its third and current location,103 Queen Street West, it took the new name of Peel Mutual Insurance Company. It reigns as the company in modern Brampton. Harmsworth Decorating Centre was established in 1890, as Harmsworth and Son, the current location was purchased on September 1,1904, after a fire destroyed their original store

Ontario

Ontario, one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada, is located in east-central Canada. It is Canadas most populous province by a margin, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Canadians. Ontario is fourth-largest in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and it is home to the nations capital city, Ottawa, and the nations most populous city, Toronto. There is only about 1 km of land made up of portages including Height of Land Portage on the Minnesota border. Ontario is sometimes divided into two regions, Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The great majority of Ontarios population and arable land is located in the south, in contrast, the larger, northern part of Ontario is sparsely populated with cold winters and is heavily forested. The province is named after Lake Ontario, a thought to be derived from Ontarí, io, a Huron word meaning great lake, or possibly skanadario. Ontario has about 250,000 freshwater lakes, the province consists of three main geographical regions, The thinly populated Canadian Shield in the northwestern and central portions, which comprises over half the land area of Ontario. Although this area mostly does not support agriculture, it is rich in minerals and in part covered by the Central and Midwestern Canadian Shield forests, studded with lakes, Northern Ontario is subdivided into two sub-regions, Northwestern Ontario and Northeastern Ontario. The virtually unpopulated Hudson Bay Lowlands in the north and northeast, mainly swampy. Southern Ontario which is further sub-divided into four regions, Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, Golden Horseshoe, the highest point is Ishpatina Ridge at 693 metres above sea level located in Temagami, Northeastern Ontario. In the south, elevations of over 500 m are surpassed near Collingwood, above the Blue Mountains in the Dundalk Highlands, the Carolinian forest zone covers most of the southwestern region of the province. A well-known geographic feature is Niagara Falls, part of the Niagara Escarpment, the Saint Lawrence Seaway allows navigation to and from the Atlantic Ocean as far inland as Thunder Bay in Northwestern Ontario. Northern Ontario occupies roughly 87 percent of the area of the province. Point Pelee is a peninsula of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario that is the southernmost extent of Canadas mainland, Pelee Island and Middle Island in Lake Erie extend slightly farther. All are south of 42°N – slightly farther south than the border of California. The climate of Ontario varies by season and location, the effects of these major air masses on temperature and precipitation depend mainly on latitude, proximity to major bodies of water and to a small extent, terrain relief. Toronto Star

The Toronto Star is a Canadian broadsheet daily newspaper. It is owned by Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd. a division of Star Media Group, the Star was first printed on Toronto World presses, and at its formation The World owned a 51% interest in it as a silent partner. That arrangement only lasted for two months, during time it was rumoured that William Findlay Billy Maclean, the Worlds proprietor, was considering selling the Star to the Riordon family. After an extensive fundraising campaign among the Star staff, Maclean agreed to sell his interest to Hocken, the paper did poorly in its first few years. Hocken sold out within the year, and several owners followed in succession until Sir William Mackenzie bought it in 1896 and its new editors, Edmund E. Sheppard and Frederic Nicholls, moved the entire Star operation into the same building used by the magazine Saturday Night. This would continue until Joseph E, holy Joe Atkinson, backed by funds raised by supporters of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, bought the paper. The supporters included Senator George Cox, William Mulock, Peter Charles Larkin, Atkinson was the Stars editor from 1899 until his death in 1948. Its early opposition and criticism of the Nazi regime saw the paper one of the first North American papers to be banned in Germany. He championed many causes that would come to be associated with the welfare state, old age pensions, unemployment insurance. The Government of Canada Digital Collections website describes Atkinson as a radical in the best sense of that term, the Star was unique among North American newspapers in its consistent, ongoing advocacy of the interests of ordinary people. The friendship of Atkinson, the publisher, with Mackenzie King, Atkinson became the controlling shareholder of the Star. The Star was frequently criticized for practising the yellow journalism of its era, for decades, the paper included heavy doses of crime and sensationalism, along with advocating social change. From 1910 to 1973, the Star published a weekend supplement, shortly before his death in 1948, Joseph E. Atkinson transferred ownership of the paper to a charitable organization given the mandate of continuing the papers liberal tradition. In 1949, the Province of Ontario passed the Charitable Gifts Act, barring charitable organizations from owning parts of profit-making businesses. It would continue to supply sponsored content to the CRBCs station CRCT, in 1971, the newspaper was renamed The Toronto Star and moved to a modern office tower at One Yonge Street by Queens Quay. The original Star Building at 80 King Street West was demolished to make room for First Canadian Place, the new building originally housed the papers presses. In 1992, the plant was moved to the Toronto Star Press Centre at the Highway 407 &400 interchange in Vaughan. In September 2002, the logo was changed, and The was dropped from the papers, during the 2003 blackout, the Star printed the paper at a press in Welland, Ontario

Shoppers World Brampton

Shoppers World Brampton is a shopping mall in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. It is host to over 190 stores, including Canadian Tire, Winners, in 1961, Elder Mines & Development Ltd. and Peel Village Developments created Shoppers World Danforth. Targeted completion date was March 1962, the two developers merged into a new company, Peel-Elder Limited, and began development of Shoppers World Brampton on a farmers field that had been purchased by Charles F. Watson of Peel-Elder Ltd. Peel-Elder Ltd. was also the developer of the Bramptons Peel Village community, in 1961, planned tenants were Loblaws, Zellers, Yolles, Bata Shoe, a Maher shoe store, Lady Ellis dress shop, Bi-Rite Drugs, Tip Top Tailors and banks. In all, it planned 55 stores, plus a department store, bowling alleys, a 1963 advertorial for Peel Village describes the mall with 57 shops. It opened in 1969 as Bramptons first indoor mall, major tenants at the time were Kmart, Dominion and Canada Safeway, with a total of 25 stores. The movie theatre closed after several years and it was gutted, and re-opened as a Jumbo Video. The projection booth served as the managers office, the Canada Safeway store was the first in eastern Canada. Its opening was targeted by 10 picketers inspired by Californias Delano grape strike, the store contacted mall management, on the second return of police to the mall, protesters were ordered off the property. James Peters, president of United Auto Workers Local 1285 told the pickets to leave. He was arrested, the first arrest since the spread to Canada in 1967. The Dominion store did not carry California grapes, in 1971, Simpsons Ltd. decided to build a location of its department store at the mall, at a cost in excess of $2 million. The first of six scheduled locations, it was to open in August 1972, the 92,000 square foot Brampton site was designed for higher sales, with higher cabinets and 85% selling space, compared to the chains usual 70% usage. The funds were earmarked for expansion of the Brampton and Danforth malls, build high rises in Peel Village, simultaneous to the Simpsons announcement, Peel-Elder Ltd. promised to expand the mall and their Peel Village development. After the Ontario Municipal Board approved the change, critics charged that Davis had interfered with planning processes and he insisted that no influence was brought to bear whatsoever by his office. The 1972 expansion increased the mall to 118 stores and 600,000 square feet, by the opening day, Charles Elder envisioned 140 stores,1 million square feet of retail, and an office building. One of the two firms to be merged was Peel Elder, the resultant firm was known as Kesmark Development Limited, nevertheless, it appears the Peel Elder name was continued until at least 1979. CFNY-FM

CFNY-FM, branded as 102.1 the Edge, is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 102.1 FM in the Greater Toronto Area. The station rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s due to its freestyle DJing format, the station commenced operations on August 8,1960, as an FM rebroadcast of an AM station, CHIC. On September 21,1962 two brothers, Leslie and Harry Allen Jr. agreed to purchase all shares of CHIC Radio Ltd. from S. W. Caldwell, Frank M. Early, F. J. Shouldice, John Fox, W. S. Martin, Frank W. Richardson, Garth H. Ketemer, G. Clare Burt, J. R. Jenkins and Gordon F. Keeble. The sale occurred on October 15 later that year and was subject to Government approval and they began playing album rock music in the evenings while simulcasting the AM programming during the day. The nearby Humber College provided a stream of young employees. Noted Canadian radio and television personality Vicki Gabereau was one of such employees, at this point in the stations existence, it operated under the call letters CHIC-FM, with a transmitter power of 857 watts ERP mono. This was just enough to just service the town of Brampton, until approximately 1975, the CHIC-AM control room operator spun LPs from the third turntable in AM master control. Nonstop full play of each side of the LP was the norm - with just a break by the AM operator for ID, the music was picked by the AM operator prior to their shift. Some of those on air people were Dave Gordon, Mike Lynch, Steve Martak, Rich Elwood, Ted Woloshyn, Scott Cameron, the style of the station was well received by listeners. In 1976, a new FM studio was built just up the road from the old studio in Brampton on a limited budget. Engineers Mike Hargrave Pawson and Steve Martak built the new studio, in 1976, CHIC-FM officially became CFNY-FM. The phrases Canadas First New Youth and Canada Finds New Youth have been cited as backronyms for the call sign, staff employed to that point were fired in favour of hiring a new team and David Pritchard joined the station as CFNYs first program director. He had previously been a DJ at CHUM-FM, and under his guidance the station became more structured and it also began hosting specialty programs of reggae and blues music, and a popular, nationally syndicated Beatles show. David Marsden, who had started as an announcer at the station, was selected as Pritchards successor in 1978. During Marsdens tenure as director, the style of the station evolved into a sound which is perhaps best described as a more professional-sounding version of a campus radio station. During this period, the station began using The Spirit of Radio as a promotional catchphrase, in turn, listeners of the station began to refer to CFNY as The Spirit of Radio. Brampton Library

Funded by the City, the Brampton Library is a system of public libraries in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. In the 2003 Ontario Public Library Week, the library was rebranded with a new logo, the system changed from the Brampton Public Library to the simpler and more direct Brampton Library. The shorter name has had mixed reception, with many patrons still referring to it by its old name, out of habit, there are currently six permanent locations. Brampton Library has a collection of more than 562,000 books, magazines, large print materials, audio books, currently, the Library has a staff of 160 full-time and part-time employees. Brampton Library services a population of just under 600,000 with backgrounds of more than 175 distinct ethnicities, rebecca Raven is the Chief Executive Officer of the Brampton Library, a position that replaces that of Executive Director. Branches that are currently in operation are named in bold and these 360 volumes, plus a federal grant of $160, were the starting blocks for the first actual public library in Brampton, founded in 1887 in the Golding Building on Queen Street. As printing presses were still expensive to operate, and thus book prices high. Only the librarian and the board were allowed to take books off the closely watched shelves. In 1907, the library received a grant from US steel magnate Andrew Carnegie to build a new library. Carnegie was a millionaire with very little formal education. Records show donations to 1700 libraries, and the hundreds of facilities across the continent still bearing his name are living proof. Despite being a supporter of culture in general, Carnegie was opposed to the facility the village intended to build. A meeting with the Brampton Board of Trades R. J, copeland, and a promise from Brampton itself to up its funding from $1000 to $1250 a year, Carnegie provided another $12,500 for the towns long-time showpiece facility. In 1946, the Brampton library took on a novel concept for the era. During the 1960s and 1970s, the system expanded to fit the needs of a growing population, the expansion included the Northwood Park Branch, South Branch, and Heart Lake Branch. The Heart Lake branch would later become known as Cyril Clark, along with government offices and a theatre this facility included a large space for a central library branch. When Brampton and Bramalea merged in 1974, their library systems became one, bramaleas Chinguacousy Branch joined Bramptons Main Branch and others, becoming the systems resource library. The Online Computer Library Center is a US-based nonprofit cooperative organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the worlds information and reducing information costs. It was founded in 1967 as the Ohio College Library Center, OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the largest online public access catalog in the world. OCLC is funded mainly by the fees that libraries have to pay for its services, the group first met on July 5,1967 on the campus of the Ohio State University to sign the articles of incorporation for the nonprofit organization. The group hired Frederick G. Kilgour, a former Yale University medical school librarian, Kilgour wished to merge the latest information storage and retrieval system of the time, the computer, with the oldest, the library. The goal of network and database was to bring libraries together to cooperatively keep track of the worlds information in order to best serve researchers and scholars. The first library to do online cataloging through OCLC was the Alden Library at Ohio University on August 26,1971 and this was the first occurrence of online cataloging by any library worldwide. Membership in OCLC is based on use of services and contribution of data, between 1967 and 1977, OCLC membership was limited to institutions in Ohio, but in 1978, a new governance structure was established that allowed institutions from other states to join. In 2002, the structure was again modified to accommodate participation from outside the United States. As OCLC expanded services in the United States outside of Ohio, it relied on establishing strategic partnerships with networks, organizations that provided training, support, by 2008, there were 15 independent United States regional service providers. OCLC networks played a key role in OCLC governance, with networks electing delegates to serve on OCLC Members Council, in early 2009, OCLC negotiated new contracts with the former networks and opened a centralized support center. OCLC provides bibliographic, abstract and full-text information to anyone, OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat—the OCLC Online Union Catalog, the largest online public access catalog in the world. WorldCat has holding records from public and private libraries worldwide. org, in October 2005, the OCLC technical staff began a wiki project, WikiD, allowing readers to add commentary and structured-field information associated with any WorldCat record. The Online Computer Library Center acquired the trademark and copyrights associated with the Dewey Decimal Classification System when it bought Forest Press in 1988, a browser for books with their Dewey Decimal Classifications was available until July 2013, it was replaced by the Classify Service. The reference management service QuestionPoint provides libraries with tools to communicate with users and this around-the-clock reference service is provided by a cooperative of participating global libraries. OCLC has produced cards for members since 1971 with its shared online catalog. OCLC commercially sells software, e. g. Brampton Transit

Brampton Transit is public transport bus operator for the City of Brampton in the Regional Municipality of Peel, and within the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada. Brampton Transit began operations in 1974, in May 2005, a major upgrade occurred that put more routes into a grid pattern. In 2006 Brampton Transit became Canadas fastest-growing transit system in terms of ridership, over 10 million riders used Brampton Transit in 2006, marking a 12.4 percent increase over 2005 levels and shattering all previous ridership records for the city. The transit system is headed by Transit Executive Director Sue Connor and it connects to York Region Transit to the east via the Queen Street-Highway 7 corridor and Toronto Transit Commission to the southeast. When the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and York University subway stations open in late 2016, Steeles Avenue, once the boundary between the former Toronto and Chingacousy townships, is a major Brampton thoroughfare. Route 11 runs west of Brampton Gateway at Hurontario Street, there is a transfer at the college with Route 50, that serves developments in the Gore Road area near the former Highway 50, or Albion Road. In September 2007, the section west of Brampton Gateway became Route 51 and it connects with Mississauga Transit at Mississauga Road and Meadowvale Blvd. Brampton Transit carries commuters to and from the Georgetown line railway operated by GO Transit. Fares are as of March 6,2017, the cash fare is $3.75, except for seniors, who pay $1.00, provided that they carry a Brampton Transit Senior Identification Card. Preschoolers and blind people travel for free, war veterans also travel for free by Veteran Transit Pass Program. Replacing the Shoppers World Terminal Location, Conestoga Drive, NW of Sandalwood Parkway, the facility stands empty, it is to be demolished and the area to be used by Shoppers World Brampton as an additional parking lot. Its first corridor was launched on September 20,2010, future corridors are planned along Main/Hurontario and Steeles Avenues. Züm received funding from the government in 2006 to begin implementation of this system
