1. Amanda Conner – Amanda Conner is an American comic book artist and commercial art illustrator. Her 2000s work includes Mad magazine, and such DC Comics characters as Power Girl, Amanda Conner studied at The Kubert School in Dover, New Jersey. Conner worked at a color separation company, which handled comics coloring prior to the adoption of computer programs such as Photoshop. She subsequently worked in a book store. When granted these interviews, she was told that she had potential, at this same time she became acquainted with professional artists through her work at the comic shop, and answered an advertisement by artist Bill Sienkiewicz, who was seeking an assistant. She took the job, which became her first comics work, while continuing to show her portfolio to editors at Marvel and she also illustrated storyboards for the advertising industry. After about her sixth or seventh time showing her portfolio, Marvel editor Greg Wright gave Conner her first illustration assignment, during this time, she worked with Marvel editor and artist Jimmy Palmiotti, who often inks over Conners pencils. From 1993 -1994 she penciled issues #1 -10 of Peter David and Richard Howells creator-owned series, Soulsearchers and Company, in 1994 she penciled Barbie Fashion #43, a Marvel Comics title that was licensed from the Mattel doll. That same year she did her first Vampirella work with Vengeance of Vampirella, the following year she pencilled issues 2 -11 of Marvels Gargoyles, which was based on the Disney animated television series of the same name. In 1996 she pencilled Kid Death & Fluffy Spring Break Special #1 for Topps Comics and she also returned to Vampirella with Harris Vampirella Lives #1-3, which teamed her with writer Warren Ellis. In 1997 she illustrated the intercompany crossover Painkiller Jane vs, on PKJ v. the Darkness she discovered that it was possible to render material of a dark tone that incorporated black humor. Conner returned to character with Painkiller Jane #0, which recounted that characters origin. Her other comic book credits include Lois Lane, Codename, Knockout, imprint of WildStorm Comics, X-Men Unlimited for Marvel, Gatecrasher, which she co-created for Black Bull Comics, and The Pro, a creator-owned book for Image Comics with Palmiotti and Garth Ennis. In 2005, she illustrated the origin of Power Girl in JSA Classified #1-4 and she also penciled a Blade comic to go with the special DVD edition. Her art has appeared on ABCS Nightline, and in The New York Times and she has also done promotional artwork for the reality television series Who Wants to Be a Superhero. and the 2007 feature film Underdog. 2. The Kubert School – The Kubert School was and still is the only accredited school devoted entirely to cartooning. The schools instructors are professionals working in the industry, many of them graduates of the school themselves. The school has a reputation for demanding and intensive coursework and its alumni include Amanda Conner, Lee Weeks, Andy Price and Alex Maleev, as well as many other successful and well-known comics pencilers and inkers. The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art was founded in September 1976 by cartoonist Joe Kubert and his wife Muriel in Dovers former high school and its first graduating class of 1978 included Stephen R. Bissette, Thomas Yeates, and Rick Veitch. Founder and teacher Kubert kept his own studio in the school, later joined by his sons Adam and Andy, who are comic book professionals. The three official student houses are the Carriage House and Mansion, at the site of the school on Lehigh Street, in Dover. The school houses the Kubert Art Store, which sells art supplies needed for assignments, such as books, there are usually no more than 150 students attending the school at any time. As well as regular classes, the school also holds a weekly class every Saturday. 3. Stephen R. Bissette – Stephen R. Steve Bissette is an American comics artist, editor, and publisher with a focus on the horror genre. He is known for working with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben on the DC comic Swamp Thing in the 1980s, Bissette was born and raised in Vermont, where he still lives, and was raised Catholic. Shortly after the publication of his first work, Abyss, Bissette enrolled in the first class of The Kubert School, before his first year was completed, his work was being published professionally in the pages of Sojourn, Sgt. In 1978, Bissette was among the Kubert Schools very first graduating class, along with classmates Rick Veitch, Tom Yeates, and others. While still enrolled at The Kubert School, Bissette executed the logo for early New Jersey synth-pop band WKGB, L. Stine, and he worked with Rick Veitch on the graphic novelization of Steven Spielbergs motion picture 1941. Bissette is best known for his multiple award-winning collaboration with writer Alan Moore and he created Tyrant, a comic book biography of a Tyrannosaurus rex, which lasted four issues. During this period, he edited the horror anthology Gore Shriek, since 1991, Bissette has presented a lecture series on horror comics called Journeys into Fear. In 1996–1997, Bissette contributed five covers for a book series about another swamp monster. 4. Adam Kubert – Kubert was rated by Wizard magazine as one of the Hot 10 Writers and Artists in the industry in 2008. He is the son of Joe Kubert and brother of Andy Kubert, born in Dover, New Jersey he is an instructor at the Joe Kubert School located there, which Joe Kubert founded, and at which he and Andy studied. Adam Kubert is the son of Muriel and Joe Kubert and his siblings include a sister, Lisa, and brothers David, Daniel, and Andrew. Comics editor Katie Kubert is his niece and he and his siblings grew up in Dover, New Jersey. He began his comics career at age 12 as a letterer. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in medical illustration and he subsequently attended his fathers The Kubert School in Dover, New Jersey. Adam Kubert began his comics career as a letterer for DC Comics and his first credited artwork for the company is the story Gremlins published in Sgt. In 1988, Adam Kubert drew the Jezebel Jade limited series and he collaborated with his brother on Adam Strange and the Batman versus Predator intercompany crossover. Adam Kubert is known for his work at Marvel Comics, from 1993 to 1996 he illustrated 17 issues of writer Larry Hamas run on Wolverine between issues #75 to 102. His first issue on the featured the after affects of Magneto removing the adamantium from Wolverines body. Kubert drew the Weapon X limited series as part of the Age of Apocalypse storyline in 1995, the following year, he drew the Onslaught, X-Men and Onslaught, Marvel Universe one-shots which lead into the Heroes Reborn crossover. From 1997 to 1998 he illustrated 12 issues of Peter Davids run on the The Incredible Hulk from #454 to 467, as well as the -1 issue. In 2001, Kubert drew the new Ultimate X-Men title, penciling the first four issues, in 2004, he began a run on Ultimate Fantastic Four, once again with writers Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis, illustrating that series first six issues, and then issues 13-18. Both Adam and his brother Andy signed exclusive contracts with DC Comics in June 2005, Kuberts first project for DC was illustrating Last Son, a Superman story arc co-written by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, which ran in Action Comics #844–847,851 and Action Comics Annual #11. Further delay forced DC Comics to bring in creative teams and delay the fourth part of the Last Son storyline and 3D Issue to #851. 5. Andy Kubert – Andrew Andy Kubert is an American comic book artist, son of Joe Kubert, and brother of Adam Kubert, both of whom are also artists, and the uncle of comics editor Katie Kubert. He is a graduate of and an instructor of second-year classes at The Kubert School, andrew Kubert is the son of Muriel and Joe Kubert, the latter of whom came from a Jewish family in southeast Poland. His siblings include a sister, Lisa, and brothers David, Daniel and he and his siblings were raised in Dover, New Jersey. He is also the uncle of comics editor Katie Kubert and he graduated from The Kubert School, which was founded by his father in Dover. Andy Kubert started his comics career as a letterer at DC Comics in 1980 and his first credited artwork for the company was the story Old Soldiers Never Die in Sgt. He later drew Adam Strange and the Batman versus Predator intercompany crossover and he is best known for his work at Marvel Comics, specifically the companys X-Men titles. An occasional cover artist on Uncanny X-Men and X-Men Classic, Kubert later served as a fill-in penciller for Uncanny X-Men #279-280,2, following Jim Lees departure from Marvel to form Image Comics. Kubert was one of the artists of the X-Cutioners Song storyline which ran through the X-Men titles in 1992 and drew the wedding of Cyclops, Kubert drew the Amazing X-Men limited series as part of the Age of Apocalypse storyline in 1995. 6. Dave Dorman – Dave Dorman is a science fiction, horror and fantasy illustrator best known for his Star Wars artwork. Dormans parents are Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Jack N. Dorman, Dorman is married to award-winning TV/video producer, writer and publicist Denise Dorman of WriteBrain Media. He has a son, Jack, who was born in 2004, Dormans father Jack Dorman was renowned for his work and awards in the field of radio-controlled airplanes. Jack Dorman created historically accurate interiors for the planes and was an expert at model building, Dorman attributes his attention to detail to his father and credits both parents with giving him emotional and financial support early in his career. Together, Dorman and his father won numerous awards for their building projects. Dorman attended Saint Marys Seminary and University in Maryland and The Kubert School in New Jersey, Dorman also taught a week-long seminar at the art department of Savannah College of Art and Design in the mid-1990s. The head of the art department at the time was Durwin Talon, Dorman has been asked to teach workshops at Flashpoint Academy and the American Academy of Art, both in Chicago, Illinois. He is also a co-founder of Comix Academy, along with Durwin Talon, Scott Hampton and Christopher Moeller and this is a master class in comic book illustration. Dorman attended an arts program at St. Marys College in Maryland. Next, he attended The Kubert School in New Jersey, but left one year because their curriculum only taught black and white illustration. As an illustrator, he himself as self-taught. Hasbro commissioned Dorman to paint over 100 pieces realistic artwork for its 3-inch series of G. I, Joe action figures in the mid-1980s. In 1994, Dorman was commissioned to do the artwork for a series of 90 trading cards for the Ultraverse comic book setting, in 1996, Hasbro asked Dorman to create more artwork for its 12-inch G. I. 7. Jan Duursema – Jan Duursema is an American comic book artist known for her work on the Star Wars comics franchise. She was the creator of Denin and Vila from Naldar, the Twilek Jedi Aayla Secura, jan Duursemas first published comics work appeared in Heavy Metal vol.3 #3. She drew several stories for DC Comics Sgt, with writer Paul Kupperberg, she co-created the Arion character in The Warlord #55 and the Arion, Lord of Atlantis series was launched in November 1982. Duursema was one of the artists to contribute to Wonder Woman #300 and she contributed artwork to the Star Ace role-playing game from Pacesetter Ltd. Her first work for Marvel Comics, as well as her first work on the Star Wars franchise, back at DC, she drew the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons comic book series for three years. She briefly worked with John Ostrander on the Hawkworld series in 1992 and her association with Dark Horse Comics Star Wars franchise began with Star Wars, Chewbacca #2. She has since drawn several Star Wars series for Dark Horse including the Star Wars, Darth Maul mini-series in 2000, Duursema and Ostrander collaborated on the Star Wars, Legacy series which was introduced with a #0 issue and ran for 50 issues from June 2006 to August 2010. 8. Mr. Lawrence – Douglas Lawrence Osowski, better known as Mr. Lawrence was born in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He was the voice of Edward T. Platypus, Nurse Leslie, Dave, Lawrence also performed the voice of Filburt in Rockos Modern Life and is recently the voice of the Announcer and Manant in The Aquabats. Lawrence is a comedian, cartoonist, writer-director, animator. He worked on The Ren and Stimpy Show in its season as a layout assistant. Apart from his work he is a writer and, since season 10. 9. Steve Lieber – His other works include the Eisner Award-winning sequel Whiteout, Melt, and the thrillers Shooters and Underground. With writer Nat Gertler, he co-authored The Complete Idiots Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel, Lieber has described his career as being about telling your own unified stories with finality. Lieber grew up in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh in the state of Pennsylvania and he studied with Joe Kubert, whom he cites as a significant influence on his career and artistic sensibilities, and graduated in 1990. Lieber also cites comic artists David Mazzucchelli, Alberto and Enrique Breccia, Milton Caniff, Alex Toth, Howard Chaykin, Alex Raymond, outside of comics, he cites other painters and illustrators as having influenced his artistic style, Hieronymus Bosch, Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, Joseph Clement Coll, Norman Rockwell, Edgar Degas, Edward Hopper, The Ashcan School painters, Andrew Loomis, Robert Fawcett, in 1993 Lieber drew Hawkman Annual #1. He subsequently drew 20 issues of the monthly Hawkman series from 1994 to 1995, beginning with issue #5 and ending with issue #27, Liebers Hawkman artwork brought him to the attention of Hollywood, where he began doing sketches for the show Batman. He said, A big company that owns the characters offers a lot of visibility, working for a big company, you have to be able to leave the character and ideas behind in exactly the same place as when you came in. 10. Alex Maleev – Alex Maleev is a Bulgarian comic book illustrator, best known for the Marvel Comics series Daredevil with frequent collaborator Brian Michael Bendis. Coming from a fine arts background, Maleev made his first foray into comics in Bulgaria for Godan and Carthel of Dead published in Riko magazine since 1991 and 1992, respectively. Upon arriving in the United States in 1995, he enrolled at The Kubert School where, within a month, in his comics, he sometimes references his Bulgarian origins. For example in Aliens vs. Predator alien eggs are stored in the cellar of a typical Bulgarian church and he first teamed with Bendis on Todd McFarlanes Sam and Twitch series in 2000-2001 before they were recruited for Daredevil. In 2006, Maleev finished his run with Bendis in Daredevil, Bendis and Maleev collaborated once again on the much delayed four part Halo, Uprising miniseries from Marvel Comics. Bendis and Maleev relaunched Moon Knight in 2011 with volume 4, Maleev also did art for the New Avengers, Illuminati special, the January 2007 issue of the New Avengers, issue #26 and the one-shots, Civil War, The Confession and Secret Invasion, Dark Reign. 11. Tom Mandrake – Mandrake grew up as a fan of Marvel Comics of the 1960s, as well as painters of the Brandywine School, particularly Maxfield Parrish and Howard Pyle. Together with his friend L. B. Kellogg, he created a fanzine titled First Flight while in high school, Mandrake spent two years at Clevelands Cooper School of Art, and then two more years at The Kubert School, where he earned his degree. Mandrake began working for DC Comics where he drew stories for the Sgt. In a 2001 interview, he recalled finally landing my first real work, once again with my old buddy L. B. at the writers helm on our pirate epic Skydogs. For Marvel Comics, Mandrake provided finished art over layouts by Sal Buscema on the New Mutants title, back at DC, he and writer Doug Moench created the Black Mask in Batman #386 and the Film Freak in Batman #395. In 1992, Mandrake and writer John Ostrander launched The Spectre series at DC Comics, in issue #54, the creative team introduced the character Michael Holt as a new version of Mister Terrific. Following the end of The Spectre series, they moved onto a Martian Manhunter series, in 2001, he worked with writer Dan Mishkin on the short lived series Creeps and in 2006 on the childrens book The Forest King, Woodlarks Shadow.
