Wilshire/Western is a heavy-rail subway station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, in Los Angeles' Mid-Wilshire/Koreatown District; this station is served by the Purple Line. Wilshire/Western was the western terminus of the Purple Line when it opened, is one of only two subway stations in the system not served by the Red Line. Prior plans called for this subway to extend to Fairfax Ave. and north into the Valley but due to political disagreements, the line terminates here and the Red Line travels to the Valley via Vermont Avenue. Metro is now constructing the Purple Line Extension to extend the Purple Line west from this station to an eventual terminus station in Westwood, near UCLA; the two artwork installations at Wilshire/Western are called "People Coming", the other "People Going". They are large murals at each end of the station; the artist responsible is a Compton native. A condominium tower named Solair opened above the station in 2009.

Interstate 105 (California)
Interstate 105 is an Interstate Highway in southern Los Angeles County, California that runs east–west from near the Los Angeles International Airport to the City of Norwalk. It is known as the Glenn Anderson Freeway for the Democratic California politician who advocated its construction. I-105 has been referred to as the Century Freeway; the California Streets and Highways Code defines Route 105 as "from Pershing Drive near El Segundo to Route 605," but Caltrans never constructed the segment from Sepulveda Boulevard to Pershing Drive. Motorists can continue west via Imperial Highway over conventional roadway to Pershing Drive, but it is not part of Route 105 nor is it under state maintenance. I-105 begins at Sepulveda Boulevard on the southern edge of Los Angeles International Airport, adjacent to the city of El Segundo, it proceeds eastward from there on, crossing the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers before terminating just east of the San Gabriel River Freeway in western Norwalk. The freeway stops short of intersecting with its parent interstate.
Instead, the primary lanes of I-105 terminate at an at-grade intersection with Studebaker Road. Much of the length of the Century Freeway runs parallel to Imperial Highway, it runs parallel to Century Boulevard, from which its original name is derived. Century Boulevard, in turn, is named for its position equivalent to 100th Street in the Los Angeles grid; the Los Angeles Metro Rail Green Line runs in the median of nearly the entire length of I-105. The Green Line's eastern terminus is at Norwalk, at the interchange between I-105 and I-605. I-105 is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System, is part of the National Highway System, a network of highways that are considered essential to the country's economy and mobility by the Federal Highway Administration. Interstate 105 was an integral part of a Caltrans 1960s master plan for the Southern California freeway system, but did not open until 1993; the right-of-way was included on several early highway plans since at least 1947, although it was not named the "Century Freeway" until 1956, was numbered Route 42.
In 1965, the Century Freeway was added to the state system originated at State Route 1 east to Central Avenue in the City of Los Angeles along an alignment near to the current right-of-way. The current route was added to the Interstate system in 1968; the route was designed between 1968 and 1972, but opposition from some of the communities through which the right-of-way would pass slowed the process and led to some reroutings. Many factors contributed to the delay; the growth of the environmental movement in the 1960s created resistance to new freeway construction. Fiscal difficulties brought about by the 1971 Sylmar earthquake and the California tax revolt of the late 1970s further hampered Caltrans' construction efforts. However, the major source of resistance to the freeway's construction was community opposition and the side effects of these demands. By the early 1970s, most of the areas in the freeway's path were predominantly African-American. Resentment over previous freeway projects' effects on other black communities resulted in significant modifications to the original route.
Most cities along the way, weary of the noise and visual blight created by elevated freeways, demanded that the route be built far below grade in a "trench." Another source for resistance to the freeway's construction was that much of the areas along the I-105 path was going to be built in low income, high crime neighborhoods, which delayed the freeway's construction until the crime in the areas went down. Norwalk, opposed to the freeway's proposed route through the center of the city, blocked the route from reaching its intended terminus at the Santa Ana Freeway. In 1972, community opposition resulted in a federal lawsuit, Keith v. Volpe, being filed, charging violation of various civil rights protections and the National Environmental Policy Act. An important figure in the freeway's history was Harry Pregerson, a United States federal judge who presided over the lawsuit concerning the freeway's construction and chose to continue presiding over the case despite being promoted to a higher level court.
The interchange with Interstate 110 is named the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange in his honor. In 1972, Judge Pregerson enjoined the further development of the freeway until it has complied with the requirements of NEPA, the California Environmental Quality Act, the Federal-Aid Highway Act, the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Act of 1970. In 1979, this lawsuit resulted in a Consent Decree, amended in 1981, which imposed several conditions on development of the freeway, including additional public hearings, preparation of an environmental report, alterations to the design to reduce lanes and intersections, improve carpooling and provide for a transit way, which became the Los Angeles Metro Rail Green Line. A portion of the right-of-way was to be constructed below grade to buffer adjacent areas from the effects of traffic noise. Green Line (Los Angeles Metro)
The Green Line is a 20-mile light rail line running between Redondo Beach and Norwalk within Los Angeles County. It is one of six lines forming the Los Angeles Metro Rail system; the line opened on August 12, 1995. It became the third line in the Metro Rail system after the opening of the Blue Red Line; the line was delayed due to a change of the line's route from Los Angeles International Airport to El Segundo. In addition to Redondo Beach and Norwalk, the route serves El Segundo, South Los Angeles, Lynwood and Willowbrook, it serves the Plaza Mexico shopping center at the Long Beach Boulevard station in the city of Lynwood. A free shuttle bus to Los Angeles International Airport is available at the line's Aviation/LAX Station; the line is suburb-to-suburb service, so it is the only one in the entire Metro Rail system not to serve Downtown Los Angeles but passengers can reach it by connecting with the Metro Silver Line busway at the Harbor Freeway Station, the Metro Blue Line light rail at Willowbrook Station or Metro Express 460 at Norwalk Station.
The grade-separated route runs in the median of the Century Freeway with a elevated section to the west. The line is maintained by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the Green Line is internally known as Line 803: this designation appears on internal operating schedules, as well as in the hyperlink on Metro's timetable website. The Green Line is the fastest light rail line in the Metro light rail network. Green Line trains operate at 55–65 mph on the I-105 freeway portion and around 40 mph on the elevated portion west of Aviation/LAX Station; when the Green Line began service in 1995, it operated with only one-car trains. As ridership increased, two-car trains were used. Ridership on the Green Line has not been as high as the Blue Line, although it did have a higher ridership than the Gold Line until 2013. Additionally, the Green Line runs with one-car trains in the early mornings and late evenings on weekdays, on weekends. Although nearly all of the Green Line stations were built to accommodate three-car trains, the Green Line has never used trains consisting of more than two cars.
The stations west of Aviation/LAX Station were not built to accommodate three-car trains. However, it is possible that the Green Line would use three-car trains when the Crenshaw/LAX Line is complete. Beginning in 2019, Metro will rename all of their BRT lines from colors to letters; as such, the bulk of the current Green Line, combined with the soon-to-open Crenshaw/LAX Line project, will be renamed as C Line while retaining the current green coloring on maps. The entire route of the Green Line is grade-separated, with its tracks following a elevated route, either on a guideway or in the median of the Century Freeway; the line begins in the west at Redondo Beach station heads north through El Segundo. At Aviation/LAX, passengers can transfer to any one of several bus lines from different operators Shuttle Bus "G", a shuttle bus from the Green Line to LAX. From here, the Green Line heads east in the median of the Century Freeway, with a connection to the Metro Silver Line bus rapid transit line at the Harbor Freeway Station.
It continues to a major transfer connection at the Willowbrook Station. The line terminates in the city of Norwalk, just east of the 605 Freeway. Metro Green Line trains run between 3:36 a.m. and 11:55 p.m. daily. As part of the consent decree signed by Caltrans in 1972 to allow construction of the fiercely opposed Century Freeway, provisions were made for a transit corridor in the freeway's median.
Construction began in 1987 on the line as a light rail line, with a route following I-105 but a short section in the South Bay following the Harbor Subdivision. This western alignment was planned and constructed to connect with LAX, but the airport was planning a major renovation during the line's construction. Los Angeles World Airports wanted the connection to LAX to be integrated with this construction, but there were concerns from the Federal Aviation Administration that the overhead lines of the rail line would interfere with the landing paths of airplanes. Various studies have suggested extending the Green Line north to LAX, Loyola Marymount University, Santa Monica. A possible southern extension could take the Green Line's southern terminus farther southeast, to the South Bay Galleria or beyond, and on the line's east end, the line may one day be extended from its current terminus at Norwalk station to Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs station. The Crenshaw/LAX Line project extends from the existing Green Line, the question of how the new segment would be integrated into the Metro Rail system was the subject of some controversy in 2018 as completion of the project loomed.
Hollywood/Vine is a heavy-rail subway station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It is located below the intersection of Vine Street; this station is served by the Red Line. The central station of the three subway stops in Hollywood, it is within walking distance of many important landmarks including the Capitol Records Building; the Hollywood Walk of Fame is upstairs, while the Pantages Theatre is across the street. Other attractions include CBS Columbia Square, the Frolic Room, Gower Gulch, the Sunset and Vine apartment complex, the Hollywood Palladium. In accordance with Metro's initiatives to spur transit-oriented development around its stations, Hollywood/Vine has become a prime target for regeneration; the W Hotel opened a 300-room location in a 2.3-acre mixed-use site with condominiums and 30,000 sq ft of street retail space. In addition, the 1600 Vine complex to the south contains 375 apartments and 28,000 sq ft of street-level retail. Hollywood/Vine opened on June 12, 1999, as the western terminus of the northern branch of the Red Line.
Upon the opening of the westward extension to North Hollywood in 2000, it lost its title as the end of the line. Like most stations on the Metro, Hollywood/Vine uses an island platform setup with two tracks. There is an entrance to the east of the intersection at Argyle Avenue; each Red Line station was assigned a professional artist to design the aesthetic appeal and personality of the station. Local Los Angeles Chicano artist Gilbert Luján was selected to design this station. "Light" was one of the central themes of the station because of its pervasiveness in Hollywood, from stars to light that passes through projectors to show films to the sun in sunny southern California. Cultural motifs in the form of So Cal cultural icons are prevalent throughout the myriad of ceramic tiles lining the walls of the corridors as passengers descend into the railway tunnel. Benches for waiting passengers were fashioned as classic car lowriders on pedestals; the station has the most detail and decorations of any station in the entire Metro system.
This station is among the most pleasant and "fun" stations and tourists may find this station the most enjoyable. Other features include two movie projectors donated by Paramount Pictures pointed towards a representation of a movie screen flanked by large curtains; the ceiling of the station is covered with empty film reels. Pillars that provide support for the station are designed to look like palm trees, beneath the handrail of the stairs are musical notes for the famed song "Hooray for Hollywood." Passengers making their way to the street follow the "Yellow Brick Road" while passing many colored tiles that depict icons or represent southern California lifestyle. Hollywood/Highland is a heavy rail subway station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles; this station is served by the Red Line. With its entrance on Hollywood Boulevard, the Hollywood/Highland Station is located in the center of the tourist area of Hollywood, near such tourist attractions as Dolby Theatre, Ripley's Believe It or Not! and the Hollywood Museum. As in New York City's Times Square, costumed characters on the sidewalk outside offer themselves for photos with tourists. Hollywood/Highland is a two-story station; the station uses a simple island platform setup with two tracks. Architecturally, Hollywood/Highland station shares similarities with other Metro subway stations and the design of the entrance to the station may have been inspired by the entrances of New York City's Times Square – 42nd Street / Port Authority Bus Terminal station; the construction designing of the station were teamed up by three different firms.
The designer of the station is Sheila Klein, the constructor of the station is CannonDesign. The lightings and the mechanical design's responsibility were given to HLB Lighting Design; the construction of the station were to be made of equipments given by the Metro, which according to HLB, made it challenging. The lighting pillars of the station was to resemble like a flower, it was sized to match well with the smooth, curved ceiling which'resembled a belly'. Sheila Klein named the architecture of the station, "Underground Girl". Red Line service hours are from 5:00 AM until 12:45 AM daily; the under construction Crenshaw/LAX Line will terminate at this station via the future northern extension from the Expo/Crenshaw station which would offer connections to West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Crenshaw District, Leimert Park, Miracle Mile, City of Inglewood, LAX. It will allow connections to the Expo Line, Purple Line, Green Line and the proposed LAX people mover; the station is located in Hollywood at the intersection between two major roads, Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

Hawthorne is a city in southwestern Los Angeles County, United States. As of 2010 it had a population of 84,293, up from 84,112 in 2000. In 2016 the population was 88,032; the city was founded in 1905 as the "Hawthorne Improvement Company" by B. L. Harding and H. D. Lombard. Harding's daughter shared her birthday—the 4th of July, American Independence Day—with New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne, a decision was made to name the city after him. Hawthorne was once a "whites only" settlement called a sundown town. During the 1930s, signs warned African-Americans to be out of Hawthorne by sundown. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 6.1 square miles, over 99% of it land. To the north of Hawthorne is the unincorporated community of Lennox and the city of Inglewood. To the east is the unincorporated community of Athens and the city of Gardena. To the south is the unincorporated community of El Camino Village, the cities of Lawndale and Redondo Beach. Manhattan Beach is at the southwest corner of Hawthorne.
To the west is the city of El Segundo and the Los Angeles neighborhood of Westchester is to the northwest of Hawthorne. The unincorporated community of Del Aire is surrounded on three sides by the city of Hawthorne along western edge of Hawthorne; the Century Freeway runs along the northern boundary of Hawthorne, with the LACMTA Green Line light rail line running down the center of the Century Freeway. The San Diego Freeway runs along the western boundary of Hawthorne. Major east–west streets in Hawthorne include Rosecrans Ave. El Segundo Ave. and Imperial Highway. Major north–south street include Aviation Blvd. Inglewood Ave. Hawthorne Blvd. Prairie Ave. Crenshaw Blvd. and Van Ness Ave. Hawthorne is five miles from the Los Angeles International Airport. The highest recorded temperature was 111 °F in 1961. On average, the coolest month is January; the lowest recorded temperature was 15 °F in 1963. The maximum average precipitation occurs in February. Hawthorne has a Mediterranean climate or dry-summer subtropical, enjoying plenty of sunshine throughout the year, with an average of 263 sunshine days and only 35 days with measurable precipitation annually; the period of April through November is warm to hot and dry with average high temperatures of 71–79 °F and lows of 50–62 °F. Due to the moderating effect of the ocean, temperatures are cooler than more inland areas of Los Angeles, where temperatures exceed 90 °F and reach 100 °F; the Los Angeles area is subject to the phenomena typical of a microclimate. As such, the temperatures can vary as much as 18 °F between inland areas and the coast, with a temperature gradient of over one degree per mile from the coast inland. California has a weather phenomenon called "June Gloom or May Grey", which sometimes brings overcast or foggy skies in the morning at the coast, but gives way to sunny skies by noon, during late spring and early summer.
The Los Angeles region averages 15 inches of precipitation annually, which occurs during the winter and spring with light rain showers, but sometimes as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. On November 6, 1966 the first documented tornado touched down within city limits, it caused significant damage, ran for about one-half mile, from 132nd St. and Ramona Ave. to 140th St. and Ramona Ave. Snowfall is rare but not impossible in the city basin; the 2010 United States Census reported that Hawthorne had a population of 84,293. The population density was 13,835.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Hawthorne was 27,678 White, 23,385 African American, 565 Native American, 5,642 Asian, 974 Pacific Islander, 22,127 from other races, 3,922 from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44,572 persons; the Census reported that 83,754 people lived in households, 208 lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, 331 were institutionalized. There were 28,486 households, out of which 12,330 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 10,833 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 6,369 had a female householder with no husband present, 2,357 had a male householder with no wife present.
There were 2,309 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, 191 same-sex married couples or partnerships. Of the households, 7,125 were made up of individuals and 1,430 had someone living alone, 65 years of age or older; the average household size was 2.94. There were 19,559 families; the population was spread out with 23,157 people under the age of 18, 9,487 people aged 18 to 24, 27,035 people aged 25 to 44, 18,395 people aged 45 to 64, 6,219 people who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31.5 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males. Union Station (Los Angeles)
Los Angeles Union Station is the main railway station in Los Angeles and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States. It opened in May 1939 as the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, replacing La Grande Station and Central Station. Approved in a controversial ballot measure in 1926 and built in the 1930s, it served to consolidate rail services from the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific Railroads into one terminal station. Conceived on a grand scale, Union Station became known as the "Last of the Great Railway Stations" built in the United States; the structure combines Art Deco, Mission Revival, Streamline Moderne style. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today, the station is a major transportation hub for Southern California, serving 110,000 passengers a day, it is Amtrak's fifth-busiest station, by far the busiest in the Western United States and the tenth-busiest in the entire country. Four of Amtrak's long-distance trains originate and terminate here: the Coast Starlight to Seattle, the Southwest Chief and Texas Eagle to Chicago, the Sunset Limited to New Orleans.
The state-supported Amtrak California Pacific Surfliner regional trains run to San Diego and to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. The station is the hub of the Metrolink commuter trains, several Metro Rail subway and light rail lines serve it as well, with more in construction or planning; the Patsaouras Transit Plaza, on the east side of the station, serves dozens of bus lines operated by Metro and several other municipal carriers. In 1926, a measure was placed on the ballot giving Los Angeles voters the choice between the construction of a vast network of elevated railways or the construction of a much smaller Union Station to consolidate different railroad terminals; the election would take on racial connotations and become a defining moment in the development of Los Angeles. The proposed Union Station was located in the heart of. Reflecting the prejudice of the time, the anti-railroad Los Angeles Times, a lead opponent of elevated railways, argued in editorials that Union Station would not be built in the "midst of Chinatown" but rather would "forever do away with Chinatown and its environs."
The Times attacked the elevateds for blocking out the California sun and in general being antithetical to the ethos of Los Angeles. Two questions were put to vote in 1926. First, the voters approved Union Station instead of elevated railways by 61.3 to 38.7 percent margin. Second, the electorate voted in favor of the Los Angeles Plaza as the site of the new station but by a much smaller 51.1 to 48.9 percent margin. Due to the efforts of preservationist Christine Sterling and Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler, Union Station would not replace the Plaza, but be built across the street in Chinatown, demolished for the project; the glamorous new $11 million station took over from La Grande Station which had suffered major damage in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and Central Station, which had itself replaced the Arcade Depot in 1914. Passenger service was provided by the Atchison and Santa Fe Railway, Southern Pacific Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, as well as the Pacific Electric Railway and Los Angeles Railway.
The famed Super Chief luxury train carried Hollywood stars and others to Chicago and thence the East Coast. Union Station saw heavy use during World War II, but saw declining patronage due to the growing popularity of air travel and automobiles. In 1948 the Santa Fe Railroad's Super Chief lost its brakes coming into the station, smashed through a steel bumper and concrete wall, stopped with one third of the front of the locomotive dangling over Aliso St. No one was killed or injured; the station was designated as a Los Angeles Historic–Cultural Monument No. 101 on August 2, 1972 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The first commuter rail service to Union Station was the short-lived CalTrain that began operating on October 18, 1982 between Los Angeles and Oxnard; the service faced economic and political problems from the start and was suspended in March 1983. The next attempt at commuter rail came in 1990 with the launch of the Amtrak-operated Orange County Commuter.
The once-daily round-trip served stations between San Juan Capistrano. Metrolink commuter rail service began on October 26, 1992, with Union Station as the terminus for the San Bernardino Line, the Santa Clarita Line and the Ventura County Line. In January 1993, Metro's Red Line subway began service to the station, followed by Metrolink's Riverside Line in June; the Orange County Commuter train was discontinued on March 28, 1994 and replaced by Metrolink's Orange County Line. In May 2002, Metrolink added additional service to stations in Orange and Riverside counties with the opening of the Via Fullerton Line. Light Rail service arrived at Union Station on July 26, 2003 when Metro's Gold Line began operating to Pasadena from tracks 1 and 2; the line was expanded south over US 101 in November 2009 with the opening of the Gold Line Eastside Extension. In February 2011, the board of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved the purchase of Union Station from Prologis and Catellus Development for $75 million.
