Milford, Connecticut

Milford is a coastal city in southwestern New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, located between Bridgeport and New Haven. The population was 52,759 at the 2010 census, the city contains the incorporated borough of Woodmont and the unincorporated village of Devon. Originally, the area was known as Wepawaug, after the river which runs through the town. A grist mill was first built over the Wepawaug River in 1640, the site of the blockade is commemorated by the Liberty Rock monument. By 1822, the town had large enough that residents in the northern and eastern sections of Milford chartered their own independent course as the town of Orange. During the next century and a half, the section of Milford was known for shipbuilding, farming and oystering. During this time, Milford also became known as a resort for residents of New Haven. Interestingly, the boundaries of the town charter granted by the State of Connecticut in 1899 to Laurel Beach are contained entirely within Milford. Residents of Laurel Beach must therefore pay taxes to both Laurel Beach as well as Milford, and all mail to Laurel Beach residents is mailed to Milford. Also in 1899, the Memorial Bridge was built at the site of the last mill over the Wepawaug after it was closed in 1894. The stone bridge is simple in design, its broad copings surmounted with rough hewn blocks of granite, there are ten blocks on the south and twenty on the north coping. At each end of the former is a four feet wide by five. It is located where Broad Street crosses the Wepawaug River, in 1903, the southeastern portion of the town was incorporated as the Borough of Woodmont. In 1959, the town of Milford including the Borough of Woodmont was incorporated as the City of Milford, Milford was one of the early settlements in south central Connecticut and, over time, gave rise to several new towns that broke off and incorporated separately. The following is a list of towns created from parts of Milford, the lots, sometimes as small as 10 feet by 10 feet, were carved out of a 15-acre tract in a never-built subdivision called Liberty Park. A small number of children, often living near Milford, collected the deeds. The developer of the prospective subdivision hoped the landowners would hire him to build homes on the lots, one of the streets in the Liberty Park subdivision plans, Shelland Street, was later built in the late 1990s as an access road to the Milford Power Company. San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey team based in San Jose, California. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League and they play their home games at the SAP Center, known locally as the Shark Tank. The Sharks were founded in 1991 and were the first NHL franchise based in the San Francisco Bay Area since the California Golden Seals relocated to Cleveland in 1976 and they have won six division titles and one conference championship. The Oakland Coliseum Arena was home to the California Golden Seals of the NHL from 1967 to 1976. They had long wanted to bring back to the Bay Area, and asked the NHL for permission to move the North Stars there in the late 1980s. Meanwhile, a group led by former Hartford Whalers owner Howard Baldwin was pushing the NHL to bring a team to San Jose, in return, the North Stars would be allowed to participate as an equal partner in an expansion draft with the new Bay Area team. On May 5,1990, the Gunds officially sold their share of the North Stars to Baldwin and were awarded a new team for the Bay Area, over 5,000 potential names were submitted by mail for the new team. While the first-place finisher was Blades, the Gunds were concerned about the potentially negative association with weapons. The name was said to have inspired by the large number of sharks living in the Pacific Ocean. Seven varieties live there, and one area of water near the Bay Area is known as the red triangle because of its shark population. The teams first marketing head, Matt Levine, said of the new name, Sharks are relentless, determined, swift, agile, bright and we plan to build an organization that has all those qualities. For their first two seasons, the Sharks played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, just outside San Francisco, a facility that the NHL, pat Falloon was their first draft choice, and led the team in points during their first season. George Kingston was their first coach during their first two seasons, Wilson was named the teams first captain and All-Star representative in the inaugural season. However, the Sharks first two seasons saw the struggles for an expansion team. The 71 losses in 1992–93 is an NHL record, and they suffered a 17-game losing streak, while winning just 11 games. Kingston was fired following the end of the 1992–93 season, several team firsts happened in the 1992–93 season. On November 17,1992, San Jose goaltender Arturs Irbe recorded the first shutout in team history, the early era also saw the birth of the San Jose Sharks long-time mascot, S. J. Sharkie. New Haven Nighthawks

The New Haven Nighthawks were a former ice hockey team that played in the American Hockey League from 1972 to 1992. They had affiliations with the Minnesota North Stars, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, the team played their home games at the New Haven Coliseum which replaced the New Haven Arena. Those same Red Wings would take the Hawks out again in their last post-season before becoming the ill-fated New Haven Senators in 1992–93, the team was notorious for a revolving door for personnel holding the AHL record for players used in a single season with 62 in 1986. No player other than Colley played in as many as 300 games for the Nighthawks, the franchise was renamed the New Haven Senators for the 1992–93 season when they began an NHL affiliation with the Ottawa Senators. The following season, the moved to Prince Edward Island. Today, it is known as the Binghamton Senators, the last Nighthawk to play in the National Hockey League was goaltender Byron Dafoe, who played seven games for the Nighthawks in its last season in 1992. The last Nighthawk active at any level of hockey was Mario Chitarroni, who played for New Haven in the 88-89 season. St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the village of Canton in Saint Lawrence County, New York, United States. It has roughly 2400 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, about equally split between male and female, the church almost did not place the school in Canton, however, as they felt that students might be exposed to too much excitement within the village limits in 1856. Lawrence University, which was progressive in its philosophy and coeducational from the beginning. The university as it today was created as a Preparatory Department to provide a foundation for theological study. That department became todays liberal arts University, while the closed in 1965 with the Unitarian/Universalist consolidation. Early in the 20th century, the graduate program in education came into being. The mid-1960s also saw the birth of one of St. Lawrences nationally known programs, in 1974, two early campus buildings, Richardson Hall and Herring-Cole Hall, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1984, structures built before 1930 were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as St. Lawrence University-Old Campus Historic District, the campus student center was completed in the spring of 2004 and serves as the schools hub at the center of campus. The Johnson Hall of Science opened in the fall of 2007, and expanded learning and lab space in several disciplines, notably biology, chemistry, biochemistry, neuroscience. Johnson Hall received LEED Gold certification for its design, it was the first Gold science building in New York State. The Noble Center, formerly used as a student center, is now undergoing major renovations to double the space available for the arts, a new Center for Arts Technology opened in January 2007. The martyrs St Orencio and St Paciencia are traditionally held to have been his parents. He encountered the future Pope St Sixtus II, who was of Greek origin and one of the most famous and highly esteemed teachers, eventually, both left Spain for Rome. When Sixtus became the Pope in 257, he ordained St Lawrence as a deacon and he is therefore called archdeacon of Rome, a position of great trust that included the care of the treasury and riches of the Church and the distribution of alms to the indigent. At the beginning of August 258, the Emperor Valerian issued an edict that all bishops, priests, Pope St Sixtus II was captured on 6 August 258, at the cemetery of St Callixtus while celebrating the liturgy and executed forthwith. After the death of Sixtus, the prefect of Rome demanded that St Lawrence turn over the riches of the Church, St Ambrose is the earliest source for the narrative that St Lawrence asked for three days to gather the wealth. He worked swiftly to distribute as much Church property to the indigent as possible, one account records him declaring to the prefect, The Church is truly rich, far richer than your emperor. This act of defiance led directly to his martyrdom and can be compared to the parallel Roman tale of the jewels of Cornelia, on 10 August, St Lawrence, the last of the seven deacons, and therefore, the ranking Church official, suffered a martyrs death. The Almanac of Philocalus for AD354 states that he was buried in the Catacomb of Cyriaca on the Via Tiburtina by Hippolytus and Justin the Confessor, one of the early sources for his martyrdom was the description of Aurelius Prudentius Clemens in his Peristephanon, Hymn 2. A famous legend has persisted from ancient times, as deacon in Rome, St Lawrence was responsible for the material goods of the Church and the distribution of alms to the poor. St Ambrose of Milan relates that when the treasures of the Church were demanded of St Lawrence by the Prefect of Rome, he brought forward the poor, to whom he had distributed the treasure as alms. Behold in these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you, to which I will add pearls and precious stones, those widows and consecrated virgins, which are the Churchs crown. The Prefect was so angry that he had a great gridiron prepared with hot coals beneath it, after the martyr had suffered pain for a long time, the legend concludes, he cheerfully declared, Im well done. From this derives his patronage of cooks, chefs, and comedians, Emperor Constantine I is traditionally held to have erected a small oratory in honour of St Lawrence, which was a station on the itineraries of the graves of the Roman martyrs by the seventh century. Pope Damasus I rebuilt or repaired the church, now the Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, the gridiron of the martyrdom was placed by Pope Paschal II in the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina. Lawrence in Palatio ad Sancta Sanctorum, Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs, the life and miracles of St Lawrence were collected in The Acts of St Lawrence but those writings have been lost. The earliest existing documentation of miracles associated with him is in the writings of St Gregory of Tours, sanctulus was rebuilding a church of St Lawrence, which had been attacked and burnt, and hired many workmen to accomplish the job. At one point during the construction, he himself with nothing to feed them. He prayed to St Lawrence for help, and looking in his basket he found a fresh and it seemed to him too small to feed the workmen, but in faith he began to serve it to the men

Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America)

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. The designation Eagle Scout was founded one hundred years ago. Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after a review process. The requirements necessary to achieve this rank take years to fulfill, since its founding, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, the Eagle Scout must demonstrate Scout Spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership. This includes a service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads. Eagle Scouts are presented with a medal and a badge that visibly recognizes the accomplishments of the Scout, additional recognition can be earned through Eagle Palms, awarded for completing additional tenure, leadership, and merit badge requirements. The Boy Scouts of Americas highest award was conceived as the Wolf Scout. The August 1911 version of the handbook changed this to Eagle Scout, the medal illustrated in the handbook was a profile of an eagle in flight, but was changed to the current design before any were issued. In their original conceptions, Life Scout, Star Scout and Eagle Scout were not ranks, Eagle Scout was awarded to any First Class Scout who had earned 21 merit badges. The first Eagle Scout medal was awarded in 1912 to Arthur Rose Eldred, Eldred was notified that he was to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a letter from Chief Scout Executive James West, dated August 21,1912. The design of the Eagle Scout medal had not been finalized by the National Council, so the medal was not awarded until Labor Day, Eldred was the first of three generations of Eagle Scouts, his son and grandson hold the rank as well. As of 2009, more than two million Scouts have earned the rank, in the 1960s, the Kansas City area awarded more Eagle Scout badges than any other council in the country, resulting in the creation of the Eagle Scout Memorial there in 1968. In 1982, 13-year-old Alexander Holsinger, of Normal, Illinois, was recognized as the one-millionth Eagle Scout, about 2.25 million Scouts had earned Eagle Scout through January 2014. In 2012,57,976 Eagle Scout awards were presented, four Nobel Prize laureates are known to be Eagle Scouts, Dudley R. Additionally he must plan, develop, and lead a service project—the Eagle Project—that demonstrates both leadership and a commitment to duty, after all requirements are met, he must complete an Eagle Scout board of review. He can complete the board of review after his 18th birthday as long as all other requirements are completed before his 18th birthday, Scouts with a permanent mental or physical disability may use alternate requirements based on abilities, if approved by the council. Eagle Scout may be awarded posthumously, if and only if all requirements except the board of review are completed before death, a board of review may be held and the award presented to the Scouts family

Bret Hedican

Bret Michael Hedican is an American former professional ice hockey player, a Stanley Cup champion, and a two-time US Olympian. Hedican was drafted 198th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, a product of St. Cloud State University, Hedican played with the 1992 US Olympic Team before he made his NHL debut in the 1991–92 season with the Blues. Hedican was then traded by the Panthers with Kevyn Adams and Tomas Malec to the Carolina Hurricanes for Sandis Ozolinsh and he would spend five and a half seasons with the Hurricanes and won his only Stanley Cup in 2006. For the 2008–09 season, Hedican signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks. He played his 1000th career NHL game on November 21,2008 against the St. Louis Blues, on September 6,2009, Hedican was interviewed live on the television sports talk show Chronicle Live, on CSN Bay Area, and announced his retirement. Hedican led the league in short-handed assists during the 1997-98 season, Hedican joined Comcast SportsNet California shortly after retiring, serving as a pre-game and post-game analyst for the channels San Jose Sharks coverage. In the fall of 2014, he joined the Sharks Radio Network team and he also occasionally analyzes games for NBCSN. In 2014, Hedican partnered with another former Vancouver Canuck, Paul Reinhart, investing over $1 million in a team management start-up, RosterBot. Member of Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, had his number 24 retired by St. Cloud State University on November 6,2010. Northern California, often abbreviated NorCal, is the northern portion of the U. S. state of California. The 48-county definition is not used for the Northern California Megaregion, the megaregions area is instead defined from Metropolitan Fresno north to Greater Sacramento, and from the Bay Area east across Nevada state line to encompass the entire Lake Tahoe-Reno area. The arrival of European explorers from the early 16th to the mid-18th centuries, in 1770, the Spanish mission at Monterey was the first European settlement in the area, followed by other missions along the coast—eventually extending as far north as Sonoma County. Northern California is not a geographic designation. Californias north-south midway division is around 37° latitude, near the level of San Francisco, popularly, though, Northern California usually refers to the states northernmost 48 counties. This definition coincides with the county lines at 35° 47′ 28″ north latitude, the term is also applied to the area north of Point Conception and the Tehachapi Mountains. Because of Californias large size and diverse geography, the state can be subdivided in other ways as well, the state is often considered as having an additional division north of the urban areas of the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento metropolitan areas. The coastal area north of the Bay Area is referred to as the North Coast while the region north of Sacramento is referred by locals as the Northstate. Since the events of the California Gold Rush, Northern California has been a leader on the economic, scientific. The first European to explore the coast was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, sailing for the Spanish Crown, in 1542, beginning in 1565, the Spanish Manila galleons crossed the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to the Spanish Philippines, with silver and gemstones from Mexico. The Manila galleons returned across the northern Pacific, and reached North America usually off the coast of northern California, in 1579, northern California was visited by the English explorer Sir Francis Drake who landed north of todays San Francisco and claimed the area for England. Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League, the Oilers were founded on November 1,1971, with the team playing its first season in 1972, as one of the twelve founding franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association. They were originally intended to be one of two WHA teams in Alberta, however, when the Broncos relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, before the WHAs first season began, the Oilers were renamed the Alberta Oilers. They returned to using the Edmonton Oilers name for the following year, the Oilers subsequently joined the NHL in 1979 as one of four franchises introduced through the NHL merger with the WHA. After joining the NHL, the Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup on five occasions, 1983–84, 1984–85, 1986–87, 1987–88 and 1989–90. This remains the most championships won by any team since the NHL-WHA merger, among all NHL teams, only the Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup more times since the Leagues 1967 expansion. For their success in the 1980s, the Oilers team of this era has been honoured with dynasty status by the Hockey Hall of Fame, on November 1,1971, the Edmonton Oilers became one of the 12 founding WHA franchises. The original team owner was Bill Hunter, Hunter owned the Edmonton Oil Kings, a junior hockey franchise. He also founded the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League, hunters efforts to bring major professional hockey to Edmonton via an expansion NHL franchise had been rebuffed by the NHL. So, he looked to the upstart WHA instead and it was Hunter who chose the Oilers name for the new WHA franchise. This was a name that had previously used as a nickname for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 1950s and 1960s. They won the first game in WHA history 7–4 over the Ottawa Nationals, the Oilers drew fans with players such as defenceman and team captain Al Hamilton, goaltender Dave Dryden and forwards Blair MacDonald and Bill Flett. However, a relatively little-noticed move in 1976 would have an important impact on the history of the franchise and that year, journeyman forward Glen Sather was acquired by the Oilers. It turned out to be his final season as a player, however, he was named player-coach late in the season, moving to the bench full-time after the season. Sather would be the coach or general manager of the Oilers for the next 23 years, although the Oilers on-ice performance for most of the WHAs history was mediocre, they remained relatively well-supported and financially stable by WHA standards. In 1976, the franchise was acquired by wealthy entrepreneur Peter Pocklington, Gretzkys first and only WHA season, 1978–79, saw the Oilers finish first in the WHA standings, posting a league-best 48–30–2 record. However, Edmonton failed to win the championship, as they fell to the Winnipeg Jets in the Avco World Trophy Final, Dave Semenko of the Oilers scored the last goal in WHA history in the third period of the final game, which the Oilers lost 7–3. Phoenix Coyotes
–
The Arizona Coyotes are a professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League, since December 2003, the Coyotes have played their home games at Gila River Arena after having spent 7½ seasons at America West Arena in downtown Phoenix. On June 10,2015, the Glendale City Council voted to end their agreement with the Coyotes at Gila River Arena. The Coyotes were founded on December 27,1971, as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association, after the WHA had ceased operations, they were one of four franchises absorbed into the National Hockey League and then granted membership on June 22,1979. The Jets moved to Phoenix on July 1,1996, and were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes, the NHL took over ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes franchise in 2009 after owner Jerry Moyes turned it over to the league after declaring bankruptcy. The sale to IceArizona Acquisition Co, LLC. was completed on August 5,2013. On June 27,2014, the changed its geographic name from Phoenix to Arizona. On June 26,2015, the team introduced updated jerseys for the 2015–16 NHL season, the team began play as the Winnipeg Jets, one of the founding franchises in the World Hockey Association. The Jets were the most successful team in the short-lived WHA, winning the Avco World Trophy and it then became one of the four teams admitted to the NHL as part of a merger when the financially struggling WHA folded in 1979. However, the club was never able to translate its WHA success into the NHL after the merger, as a result, they finished last in the NHL during their first two seasons, including a nine-win season in 1980–81 that is still the worst in franchise history. They recovered fairly quickly, however, making the playoffs 11 times in the next 15 seasons, however, the Jets only won two playoff series, largely due to being in the same division as the powerful Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. Because of the way the playoffs were structured for much of their Winnipeg run, in 1984–85, for instance, they finished with the fifth-best record in the league, only to be bounced by the Oilers in the division finals. Two years later, they dispatched the Flames in the first round, the franchise would not win another playoff series for 25 years. The Jets ran into trouble when player salaries began spiraling up in the 1990s. In addition, the home arena, Winnipeg Arena, was one of the smallest in the league. Despite strong fan support, several attempts to keep the team in Winnipeg fell through, after the franchise considered Mustangs, Outlaws, Wranglers and Freeze, a name-the-team contest yielded the nickname Coyotes, which finished ahead of the second-place Scorpions. In the summer that the move took place, Jets star Alexei Zhamnov left the team, Roenick teamed up with power wingers Keith Tkachuk and Rick Tocchet to form a dynamic 1–2–3 offensive punch that led the Coyotes through their first years in Arizona. NHL Network is an American sports-oriented cable and satellite television network that is owned as a joint venture between the National Hockey League and NBCUniversal. The channels headquarters and studios are located in the Secaucus, New Jersey facilities also utilized by MLB Network. S, primarily carries broadcasts from Canadian national rightsholders, while the Canadian feed primarily carried games from U. S. broadcasters. The league hired Ascent Media to manage and distribute the channel, through its publicly traded subsidiary, Ascent Media Network Services. In August 2015, it was announced that the NHL had reached a deal with Major League Baseball Advanced Media to take over the management of the NHLs digital properties. The Oakland Athletics are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. The Athletics compete in Major League Baseball as a club of the American League West division. The club plays its games at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum. The club has won nine World Series championships, the third most of all current Major League Baseball teams, the Athletics 2017 season will be the teams 50th season in Oakland. One of the American Leagues eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Philadelphia and they won three World Series championships from 1910 to 1913 and two in a row in 1929 and 1930. The teams owner and manager for its first 50 years was Connie Mack and Hall of Fame players included Chief Bender, Frank Home Run Baker, Jimmie Foxx, the team left Philadelphia for Kansas City in 1955 and became the Kansas City Athletics before moving to Oakland in 1968. They won three World Championships in a row from 1972 to 1974, led by players including Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, ace reliever Rollie Fingers, after being sold by Finley to Walter A. Haas, Jr. The film Moneyball, and the book on which it is based, the As made their Bay Area debut on Wednesday, April 17,1968, with a 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at the Coliseum, in front of an opening-night crowd of 50,164. The Athletics name originated in the term Athletic Club for local gentlemens clubs—dates to 1860 when an amateur team, the team later turned professional through 1875, becoming a charter member of the National League in 1876, but were expelled from the N. For further history of the 98.5 FM frequency in San Jose, see also KOME. KUFX is a classic rock-formatted radio station in San Jose, California and it is owned by Entercom Communications. The station is referred to on-air as K-Fox, the station has studios located in the SoMa district of San Francisco, and the transmitter is located on Blackberry Hill above Los Gatos. On January 24,2011, KUFX began simulcasting on KUZX102.1 MHz in San Francisco and this simulcast switched to 102. 1-HD2 on August 1,2014,102.1 now broadcasts as KRBQ. KUFX was originally located at 94.5 FM, then 104.9 FM, before this, the 98.5 frequency was the longtime home to KOME, which is best remembered as a major Bay Area AOR station throughout the 1970s and into the 1990s. Several of the KUFX staff were employed by KOME, KUFX refers to itself as 98.5 KFOX. KUFX is the radio station for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. That situation, he noted, provided an ironic twist to him living in the technology-rich Silicon Valley, the morning show was hosted by Greg Kihn, a musician who had a few Top 40 hit songs in the 1980s, until September 14,2012. The Continental Indoor Soccer League was a professional indoor soccer league that played from 1993 to 1997. It was then that the seed was planted in Rons mind, one year later, in the fall of 1990, Ron Weinstein incorporated the Continental Indoor Soccer League, CISL. Jerry Buss stood by Ron every step of the way until Earvin Magic Johnson announced he was HIV positive, jerrys mind was understandably taken elsewhere for a short period of time. Prior to his absence, Jerry and Ron reached out to Phoenix Suns owner, Jerry Colangelo. In Dr. Busss absence, Colangelo stepped up to the plate to take the role in working with Ron to attract NBA. Through Busss and Colangelos cooperative efforts they orchestrated two CISL meetings in conjunction with their own NBA Board of Governors meetings, the first was held in 1991 in Marina Del Rey and the second in New York City in 1992. Needless to say their efforts paid off and the CISL was launched with 7 teams committed to playing in the summer of 1993 with another eight contracted for 1994. Monterrey La Raza made the CISL the first US league to have a team from Mexico participating, in 1995, a second team entered the league, the Mexico City Toros. By the end of the 1995 season, the year of the league, 50% of the teams were already profitable. In 1996, Ron signed a agreement with FOX Sports to televise a game of the week nationally in prime time. Concurrently he signed with General Motors to a million dollar contract to be the official car of the CISL. That same year, the Indiana Twisters became the expansion franchise admitted to the league. The league has become very credible and we definitely look upon ourselves as a major-league sport. If you look at the roots of the NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and NFL, Ron Weinstein was quoted saying to the Houston Chronicle. They collaborated in an effort to leave the CISL and form their own league and it is the opinion of many executives within the sports world, that indoor Soccer has never again reached the pinnacle of the CISL since operations formally ceased in the winter of 1998

Closed-circuit television, also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may point to point, point to multipoint. Videotelephony is seldom called CCTV but the use of video in distance education, Surveillance of the public using CCTV is common in many areas around the world. In recent years, the use of body worn video cameras has been introduced as a new form of surveillance, video surveillance has generated significant debate about balancing its use with individuals right to privacy even when in public. In industrial plants, CCTV equipment may be used to observe parts of a process from a control room. CCTV systems may operate continuously or only as required to monitor a particular event, a more advanced form of CCTV, utilizing digital video recorders, provides recording for possibly many years, with a variety of quality and performance options and extra features. More recently, decentralized IP cameras, some equipped with sensors, support recording directly to network-attached storage devices. There are about 350 million surveillance cameras worldwide as of 2016, about 65% of these cameras are installed in Asia. The growth of CCTV has been slowing in recent years, the first CCTV system was installed by Siemens AG at Test Stand VII in Peenemünde, Nazi Germany in 1942, for observing the launch of V-2 rockets. The noted German engineer Walter Bruch, Wayne Cox, and Tashara Arnold were responsible for the technological design, in the U. S. the first commercial closed-circuit television system became available in 1949, called Vericon. Very little is known about Vericon except it was advertised as not requiring a government permit, marie Van Brittan Brown invented the home security system. The patent was granted in 1969, browns system had a set of 4 peep-holes and a camera that could slide up and down to look through each one. The system included a device that enabled a homeowner to use a set to view the person at the door. The earliest video surveillance systems involved constant monitoring because there was no way to record, the development of reel-to-reel media enabled the recording of surveillance footage. Due to these shortcomings, video surveillance was not widespread, VCR technology became available in the 1970s, making it easier to record and erase information, and use of video surveillance became more common. During the 1990s, digital multiplexing was developed, allowing cameras to record at once, as well as time lapse. This increased savings of time and money and the led to an increase in the use of CCTV, recently CCTV technology has been enhanced with a shift toward Internet-based products and systems, and other technological developments. San Jose Grand Prix

The San Jose Grand Prix was an annual street circuit race in the Champ Car World Series in San Jose, California. Initially the track was designed to run near Downtown San Jose, California, however, due to higher than expected costs for street repairs and improvements, among other concerns, race organizers moved to a course running directly through downtown. The course began on Almaden Boulevard running northerly along the lanes of the road crossing VTA light rail tracks at San Carlos St. The course then turned east along Park Avenue at turn two, turn 3 took the drivers on to Market Street passing Plaza de César Chávez through the shallow chicane of turns four and five again crossing the VTA light rail track. The course then turned right on to Balbach at turn 6, at the final turn 7 the course again turned right back on to Almaden Blvd. The entrance to the pit lane was also at turn 7, the course was the shortest and tightest track on the Champ Car schedule the three years the San Jose Grand Prix was run. The inaugural event was held July 29–31 in 2005, as the newest addition to the world series, the San Jose race was expected to raise interest in racing in Northern California. Although the Champ Car World Series was the event, a number of other races were also held. Additionally, a week of fairs, music, charity events, the title event of the inaugural Grand Prix was held at 2,00 pm PST on July 31,2005. It was race #8 of the 2005 Champ Car World Series, other races included the Trans-Am Series, the Toyota Atlantic Championship, the United States Touring Car Championship, and the Historic Stock Car Racing Series. The weekend also featured the Formula D Drift racing competition, on race weekend, many critics, including several drivers, criticized the track for being too narrow, too bumpy and dangerous. Some drivers even jokingly compared the track to a motocross track, still, the crossing of the VTAs light rail tracks on the course actually caused the Champ Cars to bounce and become slightly airborne in a high-speed area of the track. There was also little on-track passing in the Champ Car race, in the end, the event was still considered a success, as official attendance reports showed over 60,000 fans on race day, and total 3-day attendance exceeded 150,000. As a result of the quality of racing in 2005. For the 2006 event, there were changes made to the Downtown San Jose Circuit. The swap also removed the chicane placed just before the crossing, making the stretch from Balbach to the Toyota Hairpin a straight shot. The proceeding left turn onto Park Avenue was widened to allow for more passing, the track at the second rail crossing along Market Avenue was leveled so that there would be no issue of cars taking off again. Silver Beaver Award

The Silver Beaver Award is the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. The Silver Beaver is a given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self-sacrifice, dedication. It is given to those who do not actively seek it, the medal consists of a silver beaver pendant suspended from a blue and white ribbon worn around the neck. Recipients may wear the square knot, with a white strand over a blue strand. Using the United States Military as the model, silver awards are the highest awards in the BSA, the Silver Beaver was introduced in 1931 as a pin-on medal, but due to the heavy weight of the medallion it was switched over to a neck ribbon in mid-1932. A blue-white-blue ribbon bar was introduced in 1934 for informal uniform wear, in 1946, ribbon bars were replaced by the current knot insignia. The Silver Beaver was initially awarded only to men, the Silver Fawn Award, an equivalent for women, was awarded starting in 1971. It used the same insignia, but on a blue background. The Silver Fawn was discontinued and the Silver Beaver began to be awarded to women in 1974, a total of 2,455 Silver Fawns were awarded to outstanding women for support of Cub Scouting before the award was discontinued in 1974. As this is a council BSA award, it is possible for a person to receive this award multiple times from different councils. It is believed that 12-16 people are double-recipients of the Silver Beaver in this manner, there is no record of a triple-recipient

NBC Sports Radio is a sports radio network that debuted on September 4,2012. The network content is produced by NBC Sports Group and distributed by Westwood One and its launch made NBC the last major broadcast network with a sports radio network to complement its sports division. NBC Sports Radio programming began airing from 7p to 5a ET weekdays, in January 2013, NBC Sports Radio launched 24-hour weekend programming on Saturdays and Sunday. NBC Sports Radio had a weekly schedule of programming beginning on Monday. The NHL on NBC is a presentation of National Hockey League games that are produced by NBC Sports, and televised on NBC and NBCSN in the United States. Its current contract with the league runs until 2021, nBCSNs coverage includes 90 regular season games that are mostly aired on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and later in the season on Sunday evenings. Coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is split between NBC and NBCSN, with CNBC and the USA Network airing selected playoff games during the first two rounds, about 300 people in the New York City area saw the Rangers win, 6-2. Over the next few years, W2XBS carried some New York Rangers home games on a local basis, regularly scheduled American network broadcasts of NHL games would not begin until the late 1950s, when CBS began carrying regular season games, but no playoff games. The deal was terminated in 1960, due to a combination of a dispute over the players receiving a share of the rights fee, in 1966, NBC became the first television network in the United States to air a national broadcast of a Stanley Cup Playoff game. The network provided coverage of four Sunday afternoon playoff games during the 1965–66 postseason, on April 10 and April 17, NBC aired semifinal games between the Chicago Black Hawks and the Detroit Red Wings. On April 24 and May 1, NBC aired Games 1 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings, win Elliot served as the play-by-play man while Bill Mazer served as the color commentator for the games. NBCs coverage of the 1966 Stanley Cup Finals marked the first time hockey games were broadcast on network television in color. The CBC would follow suit the following year, NBCs Stanley Cup coverage preempted a sports anthology series called NBC Sports in Action, hosted by Jim Simpson and Bill Cullen, who were between-periods co-hosts for the Stanley Cup broadcasts. NHL broadcast rights returned to CBS the next season, however due to programming commitments. From 1972–73–1974–75, NBC not only televised the Stanley Cup Finals, NBC also aired one regular season and a couple of playoff games in prime time during the first couple of seasons. Tim Ryan and Ted Lindsay served as the commentators for NBCs NHL coverage during this period, NBCs NHL coverage during the 1970s was probably most notable for the introduction of Peter Puck. The animated character, whose cartoon appeared on both NBCs Hockey Game of the Week and CBCs Hockey Night in Canada, explained hockey rules to the home viewing audience. Besides Peter Puck, the 1970s version of The NHL on NBC had a feature titled Showdown. The concept of Showdown involved 20 of the NHLs greatest players going head-to-head in a penalty shot competition. After the NHL left NBC in 1975, Showdown continued to be seen on Hockey Night in Canada, note, The December 29 and March 16 games were on Friday nights, all other regular season games were on Sunday afternoons. Westwood One, owned and operated by Cumulus Media, is an American mass media company headquartered in New York, New York, specializing in radio syndication and audio content. As the radio network and national brand of Cumulus, Westwood One distributes hundreds of programs to radio stations, the company was, at various times, managed by CBS Radio, the radio arm of CBS Corporation and Viacom. It was later purchased by the equity firm The Gores Group. In September 2013, Dial Global rebranded under the name Westwood One and announced an agreement with Cumulus Media. Westwood One now includes the network of Westwood One and Cumulus Media Networks. The company takes its name from a network also named Westwood One. Dial Global was founded as X Radio Networks, a division of Excelsior Radio Networks and it merged with Dial Communications and Global Media in 2006, from which it derived the Dial Global name. Dial Global initially specialized in syndicated weekend music programs of various types, in 2007 it acquired the former Transtar Radio Networks from the original Westwood One. Triton Media Group, a subsidiary of Oaktree Capital Management, purchased Excelsior in early 2008, triton used the Dial Global name for all of its programming and later bought the remainder of Westwood One in 2011, folding it into its Dial Global subsidiary. Dial Global began exhibiting signs of distress in late 2012. It simultaneously announced that it had filed for delisting from NASDAQ, at the time of the announcement, Dial Global stock was trading at $2.00 a share, by mid-January 2013, DGs stock was trading at.30 a share. In a SEC 8-K filing dated January 15,2013, DG announced that it had extended a loan agreement with certain lenders. On August 29,2013, it was announced by The Wall Street Journal that Cumulus Broadcasting will be purchasing Dial Global. Cumulus will be paying $260 million in cash for this programming syndication service, to fund that sale, Cumulus will make a pair of station deals with Townsquare Media, Oaktree Capital Managements radio station ownership division. On September 4,2013, Dial Global announced that - as of that day - the company was renaming itself Westwood One. Both transactions on the Cumulus-Townsquare deal were closed on November 14,2013, the companys numerous acquisitions prompted rival Talk Radio Network to file an antitrust lawsuit against what was then Dial Global in August 2012. Cumulus settled the lawsuit with TRN on amicable terms in March 2014, which was followed by TRN filing another lawsuit over the issue in April 2016

Howard Howie Rose is an American sportscaster. He is currently a broadcaster for the New York Mets on WOR and formerly also called games for the New York Rangers. Rose was born in Brooklyn into a Jewish family and he attended PS 205Q, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens and graduated from Queens College in 1977. He lives on Long Island in Woodbury, New York with his wife and his oldest daughter Alyssa was an actress who has appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live. She currently has two podcasts, one called Scoring Position, and the other, Swipe Drunk Love, is featured through Barstool Sports. Rose has called Mets play-by-play on radio or television since 1995 and he has previously hosted the Mets Extra pre- and post-game shows. He worked the television booth until the retirement of long-time Mets radio voice Bob Murphy in 2003, in 2008, Wayne Hagin replaced McCarthy, and since 2012, Rose has called games with Josh Lewin. Starting in 2014, he has called games on WOR and he has also co-hosted MLB Now, joining Brian Kenny, Mark DeRosa and Ken Rosenthal on MLB Network. Rose has also been the master of the ceremonies during key Mets events, including Opening Day at Shea Stadium, Roses end-of-game catchphrase is, Put it in the books, used after the final out is recorded in a Mets win. After Mets losses, Rose says and the ballgame is over, when he uses the phrasing and the Mets are leading by a score of _ to _, he is using the same diction as original Mets broadcaster Lindsey Nelson. Rose worked as a radio announcer for the New York Rangers. He is most recognized by Rangers fans for his call of Matteau, made when Stéphane Matteau scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime of Game 7 of the 1994 NHL Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils en route to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Rangers would go on to win the cup that year over Vancouver 4 games to 3, Rose was the play-by-play announcer for Islanders telecasts where he worked alongside Butch Goring. For the 2009–10 season, Roses work was simulcast on radio as well, Rose replaced Jiggs McDonald on Islanders broadcasts in 1995–96 and was previously partnered with Ed Westfall, Joe Micheletti, and Billy Jaffe. After the 2015-2016 season, Rose announced he would not return to call Islanders games after the end of the season, Rose was the original prime-time radio host on WFAN when the station went all-sports in 1987, hosting the program until 1995. Rose occasionally worked games for Fox NHL Saturday in the mid-1990s and he has also called Long Island Blackbirds basketball and soccer. On March 1,2013, his book Put it in the Book was released, the book is an autobiography and memoir of 50 years of Mets history. Robert Charles Beers, is a retired American professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently serves as a commentator on Boston Bruins broadcasts on the WBZ Bruins radio network and is an occasional contributor to NESN Bruins. Beers played Division 1 College Hockey at the University of Maine, in Orono and he is one of many former Black Bear players who went on to play in the NHL. Beers was drafted in the 10th round, 210th overall, by the Boston Bruins in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and he played hockey with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, Northern Arizona University and the University of Maine before reaching the NHL level. His career was split between the NHL, AHL and IHL, Beers represented the United States in 1993,1994 and 1997 at the World Championships. After retiring from the NHL, the Bruins organization brought him back to play on their minor league affiliate the Providence Bruins and he played mainly in home games through parts of the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 season, and was on the ice when Providence captured the 1999 Calder Cup. James Charles Fox is a retired Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played nine seasons in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings. Fox scored his first NHL goal against Gilles Gilbert of Detroit on October 11,1980, in 1984–85, his strongest season statistically, Fox managed over a point a game, finishing with 30-53-83 in 79 games. His final NHL goal was scored in St. Louis on October 21st,1989 against Blues goaltender Greg Millen and he has been a TV color commentator for the Kings since 1990 and partners with Bob Miller on Fox Sports West/Prime Ticket. He had the honor of being one of the speakers when Miller was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006, on January 25th,2016 Fox was rewarded for distinguished achievement in sports broadcasting and inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2015, Jim Fox became acting League Commissioner of the LA Kings High School Hockey League, the LA Kings High School Hockey League is designed to continue the growth of ice hockey in Southern California and directly connect the sport to local communities and high schools. Edward Walter Eddie Olczyk Jr. is an American former professional hockey player and head coach from the United States. He was a center in the National Hockey League for 16 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Olczyk was also the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins from June 2003 to December 2005. He currently serves as a color commentator for NHL on NBC and Chicago Blackhawks games on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. He played 1,031 NHL games and produced 342 goals and 452 assists for a total of 794 points between 1984 and 2000 and he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame on February 22,2013. Olczyk was tied with Phil Kessel for the second longest point streak by an American born player in NHL history and he achieved this in 1989-90, while with Toronto. That record was broken by Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2015–16 season, Olczyk grew up in Palos Heights, Illinois and went to Brother Rice Catholic High School. He was a star on the Illinois midget AAA team that won the 1982 national title against a Detroit Compuware squad that featured future NHL stars Pat LaFontaine and Al Iafrate. He then moved to Canada to play for the Stratford Cullitons junior team before joining the 1984 U. S. Olympic hockey team, Olczyk was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of 1984 NHL Entry Draft, the third overall pick. He scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game on October 11,1984 vs the Detroit Red Wings in Chicago Stadium against Greg Stefan and he was traded a number of times during his career. In 1987, Olczyk was traded to Toronto with Al Secord for Rick Vaive, Steve Thomas and he was traded again in 1990 to Winnipeg, with Mark Osborne for Dave Ellett and Paul Fenton. In 1992 he was traded for the time in his career. Olczyk missed most of 1993–94 season recovering from an injury suffered in a game vs. Florida on January 3,1994, he would, however, recover and took part in one playoff game, during the next season he was traded back to Winnipeg for their 5th round choice in the 1995 Entry Draft. After signing as an agent with Los Angeles in 1996. He finished his career in Chicago and he returned to Pittsburgh to become the color analyst for the Penguins on FSN Pittsburgh, where he was given the nickname Edzo by current radio announcer and then co-announcer Mike Lange. In 2003, he moved from the booth to the bench, despite adding marquee free-agents, the Penguins started the season with a disappointing 8–17–6 record, leading to Olczyks dismissal on December 15. Beginning with the 2006–07 NHL season, Olczyk was the game analyst for the Chicago Blackhawks television broadcasts, Olczyk is also the lead game analyst for NHL on NBC, and previously for the NHL on Versus, the latter later rebranded as NBCSN in 2012.
