Virtual International Authority File
The Virtual International Authority File is an international authority file. It is a joint project of several national libraries and operated by the Online Computer Library Center. Discussion about having a common international authority started in the late 1990s. After a series of failed attempts to come up with a unique common authority file, the new idea was to link existing national authorities; this would present all the benefits of a common file without requiring a large investment of time and expense in the process. The project was initiated by the US Library of Congress, the German National Library and the OCLC on August 6, 2003; the Bibliothèque nationale de France joined the project on October 5, 2007. The project transitioned to being a service of the OCLC on April 4, 2012; the aim is to link the national authority files to a single virtual authority file. In this file, identical records from the different data sets are linked together. A VIAF record receives a standard data number, contains the primary "see" and "see also" records from the original records, refers to the original authority records.
The data are available for research and data exchange and sharing. Reciprocal updating uses the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting protocol; the file numbers are being added to Wikipedia biographical articles and are incorporated into Wikidata. VIAF's clustering algorithm is run every month; as more data are added from participating libraries, clusters of authority records may coalesce or split, leading to some fluctuation in the VIAF identifier of certain authority records. University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee
The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee is a public urban research university located in Milwaukee, United States. It is the largest university in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and a member of the University of Wisconsin System, it is one of the two doctoral degree-granting public universities and the second largest university in Wisconsin. The University consists of 14 schools and colleges, including the only graduate school of freshwater science in the U. S. the first CEPH accredited dedicated school of public health in Wisconsin, the State's only school of architecture. As of the 2015-2016 school year, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee had an enrollment of 27,156, with 1,604 faculty members, offering 191 degree programs, including 94 bachelor's, 64 master's and 33 doctorate degrees; the university is categorized as an R1: Doctoral Universities – Highest research activity in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. In 2015, the university had research expenditure of $62 million.
The university's athletic teams are called the Panthers. A total of 15 Panther athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I. Panthers have won the James J. McCafferty Trophy as the Horizon League's all-sports champions seven times since 2000, they have earned 133 Horizon League titles and made 40 NCAA tournament appearances as of 2016. In 1885, the Wisconsin State Normal School opened for classes at 18th and Wells in downtown Milwaukee. Over the next 42 years, the Milwaukee State Normal School saw seven different presidents, the addition of music and liberal arts programs and rapid growth from an initial enrollment of 76. In 1919, the School moved from downtown to the current location near the lakefront when a new building, now Mitchell Hall, was completed. In 1927, the Milwaukee normal school changed its name to Wisconsin State Teachers College-Milwaukee in an effort by the State Normal School Regents to refocus on the instruction of teachers; the college became one of the nation's top teacher's training colleges in the 1940s.
In 1951, the Legislature empowered all state colleges to offer liberal arts programs. The Milwaukee State Teachers College subsequently became Wisconsin State College–Milwaukee, but was still casually referred to as "Milwaukee State," as it had been throughout its previous incarnations. University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee was founded with the belief that Milwaukee needed a great public university to become a great city. In 1955, the Wisconsin state legislature passed a bill to create a large public university that offered graduate programs in Wisconsin's largest city. In 1956, Wisconsin State College-Milwaukee merged with the University of Wisconsin–Extension's Milwaukee division to form the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee; the new university consisted of the WSC campus near the lakefront and the University of Wisconsin extension building in downtown Milwaukee. The first commencement of the new University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee was held on June 16, 1957. On June 13, 1958, Socialist mayor Frank P. Zeidler was the first person to receive an honorary doctorate from the university.
In 1964, the campus of the neighboring private women's institution, Milwaukee-Downer College, was purchased by the state to expand the UWM campus. The university had purchased the former campuses and buildings of the former Milwaukee-Downer Seminary and Milwaukee University School along Hartford Avenue. From 1956 to 1971, UW–Milwaukee, UW–Madison, the latter's affiliated 10 freshman-sophomore centers and statewide extensions were part of the original University of Wisconsin System. In 1971, the state legislature merged this entity with the Wisconsin State Universities to form a united University of Wisconsin System under a single board of regents. In 1988, the UW System designated eight Centers of Excellence at UWM. In 1994, UWM was designated a Research II University by the Carnegie Foundation. UWM has expanded to 12 schools and colleges and now offers 84 undergraduate programs and 48 graduate programs, including 22 doctoral degree programs, with a university-wide focus on academic research and community service.
In 2005, UW–Milwaukee surpassed UW–Madison in the number of Wisconsin resident students and became the university with the largest enrollment of Wisconsin residents. In 2006, UW–Milwaukee was ranked as the ninth best "Saviors of Our Cities" by the New England Board of Higher Education, because of its strong positive contribution of careful strategic planning and thoughtful use of resources that have strengthened the economy and quality of life of Milwaukee, was voted by the public as one of the top ten "Gems of Milwaukee". In 2008 and 2009, the school saw the establishments of the School of Public Health and the School of Freshwater Sciences. In 2010, UW–Milwaukee purchased its neighboring Columbia St. Mary's Hospital complex. In the early 2011, UW-Milwaukee closed the land purchase for its Innovation Park in Wauwatosa; the university consists of 14 colleges and schools, 70 academic centers and laboratory facilities. Sir Peter Brian Medawar was a Brazilian-born British biologist, whose work on graft rejection and the discovery of acquired immune tolerance was fundamental to the practice of tissue and organ transplants. For his works in immunology he is regarded as the "father of transplantation", he is remembered for his wit in real life and popular writings. Famous zoologists such as Richard Dawkins referred to him as "the wittiest of all scientific writers", Stephen Jay Gould as "the cleverest man I have known". Medawar was the younger son of a Lebanese father and a British mother, was a naturalised British citizen, he studied at Marlborough College and Magdalen College and was professor of zoology at the University of Birmingham and University College London. Until he was disabled by a cerebral infarction, he was Director of the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill. With his doctoral student Leslie Brent and postdoctoral fellow Rupert E. Billingham, he demonstrated the principle of acquired immunological tolerance, theoretically predicted by Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet.
This became the foundation of tissue and organ transplantation. He and Burnet shared the 1960 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for discovery of acquired immunological tolerance". Medawar was born in Petrópolis, a town 40 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, where his parents were living, he was the second child of Lebanese Nicholas Agnatius Medawar, born in the village of Jounieh, north of Beirut and British mother Edith Muriel. His father, a Christian Maronite, became a naturalised British citizen and worked for a British dental supplies manufacturer that sent him to Brazil as an agent, his status as a British citizen was acquired at birth, as he said: "My birth was registered at the British Consulate in good time to acquire the status of'natural-born British subject'." Medawar left Brazil with his family for England "towards the end of the war", he lived there for the rest of his life. Peter was a Brazilian citizen by Brazilian nationality law, but renounced his citizenship to avoid military conscription required of Brazilian men.
In 1928, Medawar went to Marlborough College in Marlborough, Wiltshire He hated the college because "they were critical and querulous at the same time, wondering what kind of person a Lebanese was—something foreign you can be sure" and because of its preference on sports, in which he was weak. In 1932 he went on to Magdalen College, graduating with a first-class honours degree in zoology in 1935, he was impressed and influenced by his zoology teacher John Z. Young, taught and inspired by one of his Marlborough teachers, literate but "a very good biology teacher". Medawar was appointed Christopher Welch scholar and senior demy of Magdalen in 1935, he worked at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology supervised by Howard Florey and was awarded his PhD in 1941. Following his PhD, he was appointed a Rolleston Prizeman in 1942, senior research fellow of St John's College, Oxford in 1944, a university demonstrator in zoology and comparative anatomy in 1944, he was elected Fellow of Magdalen by special election during 1938 to 1944 and 1946 to 1947.
His Doctor of Philosophy thesis was approved, but the prohibitive cost of supplication meant he spent the money on his urgent appendectomy instead. The University of Oxford awarded him a Doctor of Science degree in 1947. Medawar was Mason professor of zoology at the University of Birmingham between 1947 and 1951, he became Jodrell professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at University College London in 1951. In 1962 he was appointed director of the National Institute for Medical Research, his predecessor Sir Charles Harrington was an able administrator such that taking over his post was, as he described, "o more strenuous than... sliding over into the driving-seat of a Rolls-Royce". He was head of the transplantation section of the Medical Research Council's clinical research centre, from 1971 to 1986, he became professor of experimental medicine at the Royal Institution, president of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. Medawar's first scientific research was on the effect of malt on the development of connective tissue cells in chicken.
Reading the draft of the manuscript, Howard Florey commented it as more philosophical than scientific. It was published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Physiology in 1937. Medawar's involvement with what became transplant research began during WWII, when he investigated possible improvements in skin grafts, his first publication on the subject was "Sheets of Pure Epidermal Epithelium from Human Skin", published in Nature in 1941. His studies concerned solution for skin wounds among soldiers in the war. In 1947 he moved to the University of Birmingham, taking along with him his PhD student Leslie Brent and postdoctoral fellow Rupert Billingham, his research became more focused in 1949, when Burnet, at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, advanced the hypothesis that during embryonic life and after birth, cells acquire the ability to distinguish between their own tissue substances on the one hand and unwanted cells and foreign material on the other. Cladistics is an approach to biological classification in which organisms are categorized in groups based on the most recent common ancestor. Hypothesized relationships are based on shared derived characteristics that can be traced to the most recent common ancestor and are not present in more distant groups and ancestors. A key feature of a clade is that all its descendants are part of the clade. All descendants stay in their overarching ancestral clade. For example, if within a strict cladistic framework the terms animals, bilateria/worms, fishes/vertebrata, or monkeys/anthropoidea were used, these terms would include humans. Many of these terms are used paraphyletically, outside of cladistics, e.g. as a'grade'. Radiation results in the generation of new subclades by bifurcation; the techniques and nomenclature of cladistics have been applied to other disciplines. Cladistics is now the most used method to classify organisms; the original methods used in cladistic analysis and the school of taxonomy derived from the work of the German entomologist Willi Hennig, who referred to it as phylogenetic systematics.
Cladistics in the original sense refers to a particular set of methods used in phylogenetic analysis, although it is now sometimes used to refer to the whole field. What is now called the cladistic method appeared as early as 1901 with a work by Peter Chalmers Mitchell for birds and subsequently by Robert John Tillyard in 1921, W. Zimmermann in 1943; the term "clade" was introduced in 1958 by Julian Huxley after having been coined by Lucien Cuénot in 1940, "cladogenesis" in 1958, "cladistic" by Cain and Harrison in 1960, "cladist" by Mayr in 1965, "cladistics" in 1966. Hennig referred to his own approach as "phylogenetic systematics". From the time of his original formulation until the end of the 1970s, cladistics competed as an analytical and philosophical approach to systematics with phenetics and so-called evolutionary taxonomy. Phenetics was championed at this time by the numerical taxonomists Peter Sneath and Robert Sokal, evolutionary taxonomy by Ernst Mayr. Conceived, if only in essence, by Willi Hennig in a book published in 1950, cladistics did not flourish until its translation into English in 1966.
Today, cladistics is the most popular method for constructing phylogenies from morphological data. In the 1990s, the development of effective polymerase chain reaction techniques allowed the application of cladistic methods to biochemical and molecular genetic traits of organisms, vastly expanding the amount of data available for phylogenetics. At the same time, cladistics became popular in evolutionary biology, because computers made it possible to process large quantities of data about organisms and their characteristics; the cladistic method interprets each character state transformation implied by the distribution of shared character states among taxa as a potential piece of evidence for grouping. The outcome of a cladistic analysis is a cladogram – a tree-shaped diagram, interpreted to represent the best hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships. Although traditionally such cladograms were generated on the basis of morphological characters and calculated by hand, genetic sequencing data and computational phylogenetics are now used in phylogenetic analyses, the parsimony criterion has been abandoned by many phylogeneticists in favor of more "sophisticated" but less parsimonious evolutionary models of character state transformation.
Cladists contend. Every cladogram is based on a particular dataset analyzed with a particular method. Datasets are tables consisting of molecular, ethological and/or other characters and a list of operational taxonomic units, which may be genes, populations, species, or larger taxa that are presumed to be monophyletic and therefore to form, all together, one large clade. Different datasets and different methods, not to mention violations of the mentioned assumptions result in different cladograms. Only scientific investigation can show, more to be correct; until for example, cladograms like the following have been accepted as accurate representations of the ancestral relations among turtles, lizards and birds: If this phylogenetic hypothesis is correct the last common ancestor of turtles and birds, at the branch near the ▼ lived earlier than the last common ancestor of lizards and birds, near the ♦. Most molecular evidence, produces cladograms more like this: If this is accurate the last common ancestor of turtles and birds lived than the last common ancestor of lizards and birds.
Since the cladograms provide competing accounts of real events, at most one of them is correct. The cladogram to the right represents the current universally accepted hypothesis that all primates, including strepsirrhines like the lemurs and lorises, had a common ancestor all of whose descendants were primates, so form a clade. Within the primates, all anthropoids are hypothesized to have had a common ancestor all of whose descendants were anthropoids, so they form the clade called Anthropoidea; the "prosimians", on the other hand, form a paraphyletic taxon. Northwestern was founded in 1851 by John Evans, for whom the city of Evanston is named, eight other lawyers and Methodist leaders. Its founding purpose was to serve the Old Northwest Territory, an area that includes the states of Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and parts of Minnesota. Instruction began in 1855 and women were admitted in 1869. Today, the main campus is a 240-acre parcel in Evanston, along the shores of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of downtown Chicago; the university's law and professional schools are located on a 25-acre campus in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood. In 2008, the university opened a campus in Education City, Qatar with programs in journalism and communication. In 2016, Northwestern opened its San Francisco space at 44 Montgomery St. which hosts journalism and marketing programs. The University is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference and remains the only private university in the conference; the Northwestern Wildcats compete in 19 intercollegiate sports in the NCAA's Division I Big Ten Conference.
The foundation of Northwestern University can be traced to a meeting on May 31, 1850, of nine prominent Chicago businessmen, Methodist leaders, attorneys who had formed the idea of establishing a university to serve what had been known from 1787 to 1803 as the Northwest Territory. On January 28, 1851, the Illinois General Assembly granted a charter to the Trustees of the North-Western University, making it the first chartered university in Illinois; the school's nine founders, all of whom were Methodists, knelt in prayer and worship before launching their first organizational meeting. Although they affiliated the university with the Methodist Episcopal Church, they favored a non-sectarian admissions policy, believing that Northwestern should serve all people in the newly developing territory by bettering the economy in Evanston. John Evans, for whom Evanston is named, bought 379 acres of land along Lake Michigan in 1853, Philo Judson developed plans for what would become the city of Evanston, Illinois.
The first building, Old College, opened on November 5, 1855. To raise funds for its construction, Northwestern sold $100 "perpetual scholarships" entitling the purchaser and his heirs to free tuition. Another building, University Hall, was built in 1869 of the same Joliet limestone as the Chicago Water Tower built in 1869, one of the few buildings in the heart of Chicago to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1873 the Evanston College for Ladies merged with Northwestern, Frances Willard, who gained fame as a suffragette and as one of the founders of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, became the school's first dean of women. Northwestern admitted its first female students in 1869, the first woman was graduated in 1874. Northwestern fielded its first intercollegiate football team in 1882 becoming a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. In the 1870s and 1880s, Northwestern affiliated itself with existing schools of law and dentistry in Chicago. Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law is the oldest law school in Chicago.
As the university increased in wealth and distinction, enrollments grew, these professional schools were integrated with the undergraduate college in Evanston. The Association of American Universities invited Northwestern to become a member in 1917. Under Walter Dill Scott's presidency from 1920 to 1939, Northwestern began construction of an integrated campus in Chicago designed by James Gamble Rogers to house the professional schools. In 1933 a proposal to merge Northwestern with the University of Chicago rejected. Northwestern became one of the first six universities in the United States to establish a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in the 1920s. Northwestern played host to the first-ever NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship game in 1939 in the original Patten Gymnasium, demolished and relocated farther north along with the Dearborn Observatory to make room for the Technological Institute.
