Dotdash is an American digital media company that publishes articles and videos about various subjects across categories including health, food, tech, lifestyle and education. It operates brands including Verywell, The Spruce, The Balance, Lifewire, Byrdie, MyDomaine, TripSavvy, Liquor.com, ThoughtCo. The website competes with other online resource encyclopedias. In August 2012, Dotdash became a property of IAC, owner of Ask.com and numerous other online brands, its revenue is generated by advertising. Dotdash has offices in San Francisco and Chicago. Founded in 1996 as The Mining Company, the site was launched on April 21, 1997, by Scott Kurnit, owner of General Internet, Bill Day, a group of other entrepreneurs in New York City; the original goal was to maintain 1,800 topic areas, but after five years of operation, this number was reduced to around 700. The company changed its name to "About Inc.", the website address from "miningco.com" to "about.com" in May 1999. The company was acquired by Primedia, Inc. in 2000 through a deal valued at US$690 million, whereby Primedia swapped 45.2 million shares for About, Inc.'s 18.1 million shares.
At the time of the acquisition announcement, About Inc. was measured at US$133 million in cash and no debt, while the Media Metrix company tallied 21 million unique monthly visitors—making it the seventh-most-visited "network of sites" at the time—a network of over 700 topic sites, sorted into 36 areas and 50,000 subjects, 4,000 advertisers. Following the purchase, finalized in the first quarter of 2001, the combined company was called "Primedia" and Kurnit remained chief executive officer. In February 2005, The New York Times Company announced it was buying About.com, a purchase, completed in the first half of the year for US$410 million. Google and Yahoo were among the other bidders. Following the Times Co. acquisition, Peter C. Horan was appointed as About Inc.'s president and CEO, but he was soon replaced by Scott Meyer in May 2005. In March 2007, About.com's patronage was measured at 33.5 million unique visitors. On May 7, 2007, About Inc. acquired ConsumerSearch.com—a site that generated 3 million unique monthly visitors during the first quarter of 2007—for US$33 million in cash following two other purchases that were made in the preceding eight-month period: UCompareHealthCare.com and Calorie-Count.com.
Conceived of in January 2007, About.com's first owned foreign venture, the China-based Abang.com, debuted in December 2007. At the time of the launch, the company had a Japan-based online entity, Allabout.co.jp, but it functioned under a licensing agreement. By January 2008, the China site consisted of around 25 employees, as well as 80 guides who were responsible for article production within seven categories: Fashion, Health, Pets and Travel; as part of the localization process, the China initiative—led by Matt Roberts, who became the CEO of Abang.com, Wen-Wei Wang, the vice president of technology for the launch—was named "Abang" because the Chinese character "bang" refers to the concept of a group or community. The About Group generated US$102.7 million in 2007, which represented a 135-percent increase from the time of the Times Co. acquisition. Meyer stepped down from the chief executive role in March 2008 and was replaced by Cella Irvine, who worked for Hearst Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
In April 2011, Irvine launched the About en Español website, About's first-ever Spanish-language channel and featured nine topics, including movies and makeup, that were to be expanded by around 100 by the start of 2012. The launch was part of an overall strategy that included a redesigned About.com homepage, a doubling of the number of "how-to" and do-it-yourself videos on About.com's 24 channels, new outlets on About.com for advertisers. The significant impact of the global financial crisis upon online advertising was experienced shortly after Irvine's appointment and, despite her focus on video content and Hispanic consumers, she was removed from the CEO role after three years and three consecutive quarters in which revenue decreased. Martin Nisenholtz, SVP of digital operations, temporarily replaced Irvine following her departure in May 2011. In July 2011, Darline Jean was named CEO of the About Group, after the company's second-quarter revenues totaled US$27.8 million. Jean served as About's chief financial officer and her new appointment became effective on September 1, 2011.
A media report published in August 2012 indicated that Answers.com had reached a preliminary agreement to acquire About.com for US$270 million. However, on August 26, Barry Diller's IAC announced that it would acquire About.com instead for US$300 million in cash. A source for the TechCrunch publication confirmed that Answers.com's offer was valued at US$270 million, but consisted of debt and equity in Answers.com. In the corresponding press release, IAC explained that the acquisition would help bolster and accompany its existing properties, such as the Ask.com web search engine. Jean fulfilled her role as chief executive during the transition period, while ownership was transferred to IAC, left About shortly after the sale was finalized. At the time of the IAC acquisition, signed on August 26, 2012, About.com consisted of nearly 1,000 topic sites and over three million unique articles, while, in traffic terms, Alexa ranked the site as number 37 in the U. S. and 80 in the global context. On April 2, 2013, Neil Vogel became the new CEO of About.com.

Digital Pictures was an American video game developer founded in 1991 by Lode Coen, Mark Klein, Ken Melville, Anne Flaut-Reed, Kevin Welsh and Tom Zito. The company originated from an attempt to produce a game for the failed VHS-based NEMO game system. One of its first titles, Night Trap was produced as a title for the NEMO, before being converted for use with Sega's new Sega CD; the mature-themed content of Night Trap made it the source of some controversy. The title was a bestseller. Digital Pictures went on to create other full motion video-based titles for Sega hardware, are regarded as a pioneer of the interactive movie genre. However, the company declined in the mid-1990s due to waning interest in full motion video games, its final title, Maximum Surge went unreleased and was repurposed into a film called Game Over. The founders of Digital Pictures met in the late 1980s while working at a division of the toy manufacturer Hasbro called Hasbro Interactive and renamed Isix; the Isix team developed a video game system called NEMO that used VHS tapes rather than cartridges, which allowed games to offer live action and interactive full motion video.
They developed a software prototype called Scene Of The Crime, which led to the production of two full-length titles, Night Trap and Sewer Shark. After Hasbro executives declined to bring the NEMO system to market, closing its Isix division, key members of the Isix team founded Digital Pictures in 1991 and purchased the NEMO software assets from Hasbro. Digital Pictures converted Night Trap and Sewer Shark from their video-tape-based format to the Sega CD platform. Throughout the 1990s, Digital Pictures continued to design interactive full motion video games for the CD-ROM format. Steve Russell worked for the company for a time. Several celebrities, including actors Steve Eastin, Corey Haim, Yasmine Bleeth, R. Lee Ermey, Dana Plato. In the early 1990s, Night Trap was singled out by numerous interest groups and by Senators Joseph Lieberman and Herbert Kohl as evidence that the video game industry was marketing games with graphic violence and other adult content to minors. Concern about Night Trap and several other games such as Mortal Kombat helped to bring about the creation of the ESRB video game rating system.
By the late 1990s, consumer interest in full-motion video games, which accounted for the majority of the company's profits, was in decline. After the collapse of the company, its assets were acquired by Cyber Cinema Interactive; the new company intended that never came about. The only actual production for Cyber Cinema was the direct to video film Game Over – known as Maximum Surge Movie, it used footage from an unreleased video game called Maximum Surge as well as clips from other Digital Pictures games. Although the film boasted stars such as Yasmine Bleeth and Walter Koenig, they only appear in the segments, pulled from the FMV sequences of the game, which suffer from lower image quality than the original footage. Flash Film Works acquired the rights to some of the games, they remastered and re-released Double Switch and Quarterback Attack for iTunes and Google Play in late 2016 before partnering with Screaming Villains and Limited Run Games to release PlayStation 4 remasters starting in 2018 with Double Switch and 2019 with Corpse Killer.

Mastekranen is an 18th-century masting sheer and present landmark on Holmen in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was designed by architect Philip de Lange and built in 1748–51 as part of the Royal Naval Shipyard at Holmen. Under the reign of Frederick III, Holmen was established through a series of land reclamations to replace the naval base and shipyard at Bremerholm; the first ship to be set to sea from Nyholm was Dannebrog in 1692 and in the following years the construction of all major vessels moved there. The facilities at Holmen were expanded over the next centuries. Earlier the building of sailing ships had not required sheers to erect their mast, as it could be lifted into place by ropes and allowed to pivot around its foot; as ships became larger, it was no longer possible to mount their masts and heavier, in this fashion. A crane was needed, tall enough to lift the entire mast vertically and lower it into the ship, it was as a consequence of this development that the Masting Crane on Nyholm was erected in 1748–51.
In the late 19th century, the increasing size and capacity of general harbour cranes began to overlap with the lofty but lightweight masting sheers and so their specialisation was no longer required. In 1918 all shipyard activities at Nyholm were moved to Frederiksholm. During WWII, the Danish fleet chose to scuttle themselves in response to Operation Safari; the coastal defence ship HDMS. The Masting Crane was designed by Phillip de Lange in the baroque style. While it appears to be a masonry tower with a wooden jib atop, the entire crane is in fact a timber structure with the outer wall only serving as a protective shield against sun and wind; the uppermost wooden structure is kept together by tarred rope to make it more flexible and not to weaken the wood. Though the Masting Crane is "just" a piece of industrial equipment, it has been designed with lower windows for each floor to create an optical illusion making it appear taller and more imposing
Dennis Kappen is a Canadian Industrial Designer of South Asian origin. He is Professor of Industrial Design, teaching in the Bachelors program in Industrial Design at Humber College, he is a design consultant, business strategist and brand experience designer with specialization in interaction design and human factors design, computer aided design and plastics product design. He is a researcher at UOIT pursuing research in strategic human interaction in the realm of living spaces and spatial interaction for older adults and vulnerable population. Kappen was born in Kerala India, he graduated with a Masters in Design in 1992 from the Industrial Design Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. During his student life he secured two international design awards from Sony Corporation, Japan: an Honourable Mention in the Shapes of Sound to Come International Student Design Competition in 1991 and Second Prize in the International Idea Design Competition in 1992. Kappen worked in Mumbai at a design consulting firm from 1992 to 1995 as an industrial designer providing branding and packaging designs to cosmetics containers and perfume bottles.
He secured a full entry scholarship to the Advanced Product Design program at Art Center Europe. He continued to study at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena campus, California, he immigrated to Canada in 1996. Kappen worked in product design and development for Brita Canada and Decker, Perkin Elmer, MDS-Sciex and G-Tech Corporation, amongst others, his design projects have covered various fields including new technology, consumer products and internet technology, medical products and hand held electronic devices. Some of the designs for which he was responsible for were: the Brita Atlantis water filtration jug, a product, exhibited at the Universal by Design Exhibition, 2000, at the Design Exchange, Toronto. Kappen incorporated 3D Ideation Inc. a product development firm which provides strategic business innovation through design incorporating the basic values of enhancement of human life, convenience of use, interaction design, human factors and ergonomics and plastic product design.

In urban planning and design, an urban village is an urban development characterized by medium-density housing, mixed use zoning, good public transit and an emphasis on pedestrianization and public space. Contemporary urban village ideas are related to New Urbanism and smart growth ideas initiated in the United States. Urban villages are seen to provide an alternative to recent patterns of urban development in many cities decentralization and urban sprawl, they are purported to: Reduce car reliance and promote cycling and transit use Provide a high level of self-containment Help facilitate strong community institutions and interactionThe concept of urban villages was formally born in Britain in the late 1980s with the establishment of the Urban Villages Group. Following pressure from the UVG, the concept was prioritized in British national planning policy between 1997 and 1999. Urban villages come in the form of suburbs of metropolitan areas that are politically designated as villages. Urban village ideals have been applied to new greenfield and brownfield developments and urban renewal projects.
The concept has been adopted in many countries and used by both government development agencies as well as private enterprise as a guiding concept for many projects. The ideas of the urban commentator Jane Jacobs are regarded as having had the largest influence on the urban village concept. Jacobs rejected the modernist views that dominated urban planning and architecture in the 1950s-60s and constructed an alternative philosophy that values traditional neighborhoods and the role of the inner city. Proponents believe that urban villages provide a viable alternative to the social ills that characterize modernism in cities, such as freeways and high-rise estates. Another strong impetus for urban villages has been growing disenchantment with the urban sprawl that has characterized the development of many cities since World War II. Urban villages are seen to create self-contained communities that reduce the need to travel large distances and reduce the subsequent reliance on the automobile; the decline of noxious industry and the emergence of the service economy allows the mixing of employment and residential activities without detriment to residents.
This is in contrast to the single-use zoning that helped fuel urban sprawl during the industrial and manufacturing eras. Through more consolidated development, urban villages can reduce the intrusion of urban growth on the countryside; these environmental consequences of urban sprawl have come to dominate discussion promoting urban villages in recent years. Urban villages are seen to provide a solution to the demise of community, associated with modernism and sprawl; the concept uses the social and physical morphology of the traditional rural village as an inspiration for creating better functioning communities. The urban village movement has been influenced by Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City ideals which emphasize environmental determinism in relation to community. Urban design techniques such as public space and pedestrianization are employed to facilitate the development of community by encouraging human interaction; this philosophy shares many attributes with the new urbanism school of thought.
Many urban village developments, both Government and initiated, have been seen to depart from the original ideals of the concept. Private developments use the ‘urban village’ label as an advertising pitch or to win Government support for their project. Many developments, although intended to create a true urban village form, have not achieved their objectives; some planners question whether a genuine urban village has been built. The objectives of urban villages are criticized as unrealistic because they ignore broader social and economic realities; the ability to create self-contained villages is questionable as employment and activity patterns continue to become more complex. The viability of creating a variety of employment and activity within an area with a small population base can be questioned, it has been suggested that the demise of the neighborhood community is a function of “conscious economic and social choice” rather than a product of urban form. The limitations of the urban village concept to achieve sustainability in urban areas have been studied in developing countries, which further emphasizes the institutional barriers against such an application in the case of the developing countries.
This issue becomes more critical when we accept that the institutional landscape in rural environments is more complex than urban areas and that incompatible institutional structure of the developing countries would add to the idealistic nature of the urban village concept. Ricky Cheng Siu Chung is a Hong Kong football manager and former player. He is the current manager of Hong Kong Premier League club Southern, he served as a commentator for the 2010 FIFA World Cup for the Cantonese subscription television network, Astro Wah Lai Toi. Cheng moved to Costa Rica when he was 8 years old along with his parents and sister, is fluent in Spanish and English as well as his native Cantonese, his father, Cheng Kwok Kan, was a famous footballer in Hong Kong who played for Happy Valley before moving to Costa Rica. Cheng Siu Chung started his career in Costa Rica where he represented Costa Rica for the youth level. In 1994, Alajuelense sold Cheng to Eastern for a record transfer fee of HK$234,000, it has been the highest transfer fee record in Hong Kong First Division League. The record stood until 2007 when South China bought Chan Wai Ho from Hong Kong Rangers by HK$400,000. While serving a coach at Kitchee played for Southern which at the time were in the Hong Kong Third District Division League.
On 7 May 2015, Kitchee announced on Facebook that Cheng had been hired by Southern as their new manager after the district club announced that they would seek a license to compete in the 2015-16 Hong Kong Premier League.
