Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette

A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. Born in Chavaniac, in the province of Auvergne in south central France and he followed its martial tradition, and was commissioned an officer at age 13. He became convinced that the American cause in its war was noble. There, he was made a general, however, the 19-year-old was initially not given troops to command. Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he managed to organize an orderly retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island, in the middle of the war, he returned home to lobby for an increase in French support. He again sailed to America in 1780, and was given positions in the Continental Army. In 1781, troops in Virginia under his command blocked forces led by Cornwallis until other American, Lafayette returned to France and, in 1787, was appointed to the Assembly of Notables, which was convened in response to the fiscal crisis. He was elected a member of the Estates-General of 1789, where representatives met from the three orders of French society—the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. He helped write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, after the storming of the Bastille, Lafayette was appointed commander-in-chief of the National Guard and tried to steer a middle course through the French Revolution. In August 1792, the radical factions ordered his arrest, fleeing through the Austrian Netherlands, he was captured by Austrian troops and spent more than five years in prison. Lafayette returned to France after Napoleon Bonaparte secured his release in 1797, after the Bourbon Restoration of 1814, he became a liberal member of the Chamber of Deputies, a position he held for most of the remainder of his life. During Frances July Revolution of 1830, Lafayette declined an offer to become the French dictator, instead, he supported Louis-Philippe as king, but turned against him when the monarch became autocratic. Lafayette died on 20 May 1834, and is buried in Picpus Cemetery in Paris, for his accomplishments in the service of both France and the United States, he is sometimes known as The Hero of the Two Worlds. Lafayettes lineage was likely one of the oldest and most distinguished in Auvergne and, perhaps, males of the Lafayette family enjoyed a reputation for courage and chivalry and were noted for their contempt for danger. One of Lafayettes early ancestors, Gilbert de Lafayette III, a Marshal of France, had been a companion-at-arms of Joan of Arcs army during the Siege of Orléans in 1429, according to legend, another ancestor acquired the crown of thorns during the Sixth Crusade. Lafayettes father likewise died on the battlefield, on 1 August 1759, Michel de Lafayette was struck by a cannonball while fighting a British-led coalition at the Battle of Minden in Westphalia. Lafayette became marquis and Lord of Chavaniac, but the estate went to his mother, in 1768, when Lafayette was 11, he was summoned to Paris to live with his mother and great-grandfather at the comtes apartments in Luxembourg Palace

Fayette is a city in Jefferson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,614 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Jefferson County. Fayette is located at 31°42′40″N 91°3′44″W, according to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land. In 1879, the Jesse James gang, based in Missouri, raided southwest Mississippi, robbing a store each in Washington and Fayette. The outlaws absconded with $2,000 cash in the robbery and took shelter in abandoned cabins on the Kemp Plantation south of St. Joseph. A posse attacked and killed two of the outlaws but failed to capture the entire gang, Jesse James and most of his gang succeeded in returning to Missouri. He was killed three years in 1882 at his house in St. Joseph in northwestern Missouri, after Congressional passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, blacks began to register and vote again. Charles Evers was elected as mayor in 1969 by the people of Fayette and he beat the white incumbent R. G. Evers was an activist and the brother of civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Fayette City is a borough in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census, down from 714 at the 2000 census and it is served by the Belle Vernon Area School District. Like many towns around it, Fayette City has been home to coal miners supporting the coal industry in the region. It was the site of the Naomi Mine explosion, December 7,1907, Fayette City is located in northwestern Fayette County at 40°6′2″N 79°50′20″W. It sits on the east bank of the Monongahela River, which forms the border with Washington County, the borough of Allenport is directly across the river, but the closest river crossing is the I-70 bridge 3 miles north at Belle Vernon. Pennsylvania Route 201 passes through Fayette City as Main Street and Second Street, uniontown, the Fayette County seat, is 17 miles to the southeast via PA201 and PA51. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has an area of 0.25 square miles, of which 0.19 square miles is land and 0.06 square miles. Fayette Citys low elevation and location along the Monongahela River make it susceptible to flooding after heavy rains, lamb Lick Run and Downers Run enter the Monongahela within the boroughs boundaries. Fayette Historic State Park

Fayette Historic State Park is the state park of the historic town of Fayette in the U. S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Big Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan in between Snail Shell Harbor and Sand Bay, on the side of the Upper Peninsula. Fayette was the site of a community that manufactured charcoal pig iron between 1867 and 1891. The town has been reconstructed into a museum showing what life was like in this town in the late 19th century. Fayette was once one of the Upper Peninsulas most productive iron-smelting operations, Fayette grew up around two blast furnaces, a large dock, and several charcoal kilns, following the post-Civil War need for iron. Nearly 500 residents—many immigrating from Canada, the British Isles, and northern Europe—lived in and near the town that existed to make pig iron. During 24 years of operation Fayettes blast furnaces produced a total of 229,288 tons of iron, using local hardwood forests for fuel, when the charcoal iron market began to decline, the Jackson Iron Company closed its Fayette smelting operations in 1891. Another event leading to the demise of the Jackson Iron Company was the use of the hardwoods and limestone to purify the iron and this was the main source for purifying the iron and therefore led to the decline of the Jackson Iron Company. After shutting down operations, many residents left Fayette in search of employment elsewhere, though chose to stay nearby. Because of the closing of smelting operations, the became a resort. In 1916 it was purchased by an individual and turned into a summer resort. It continued in that capacity until 1946 when another individual purchased it, lastly, it was purchased by the Escanaba Paper Company, and was swapped to the Michigan government for timberland. As a result, Fayette became a park in 1959. Today, Fayette Historic Townsite is a museum with many restored buildings. Visitors may walk through the buildings to learn about life in Fayette during the late 19th century, over 20 buildings are open, with restoration continuing on other parts of the town. The townsite is open daily for visitors from approx, a visitors center and museum store are also located at the park. There is no charge, however, a Michigan State Park permit is required.
