Hollywood/Highland is a heavy rail subway station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles; this station is served by the Red Line. With its entrance on Hollywood Boulevard, the Hollywood/Highland Station is located in the center of the tourist area of Hollywood, near such tourist attractions as Dolby Theatre, Ripley's Believe It or Not! and the Hollywood Museum. As in New York City's Times Square, costumed characters on the sidewalk outside offer themselves for photos with tourists. Hollywood/Highland is a two-story station; the station uses a simple island platform setup with two tracks. Architecturally, Hollywood/Highland station shares similarities with other Metro subway stations and the design of the entrance to the station may have been inspired by the entrances of New York City's Times Square – 42nd Street / Port Authority Bus Terminal station; the construction designing of the station were teamed up by three different firms.
The designer of the station is Sheila Klein, the constructor of the station is CannonDesign. The lightings and the mechanical design's responsibility were given to HLB Lighting Design; the construction of the station were to be made of equipments given by the Metro, which according to HLB, made it challenging. The lighting pillars of the station was to resemble like a flower, it was sized to match well with the smooth, curved ceiling which'resembled a belly'. Sheila Klein named the architecture of the station, "Underground Girl". Red Line service hours are from 5:00 AM until 12:45 AM daily; the under construction Crenshaw/LAX Line will terminate at this station via the future northern extension from the Expo/Crenshaw station which would offer connections to West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Crenshaw District, Leimert Park, Miracle Mile, City of Inglewood, LAX. North Hollywood station
North Hollywood is a combined heavy rail subway station and a bus rapid transit station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located at the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Chandler Boulevard in the North Hollywood district in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles; this station is served by the Red Line subway service as well as the Orange Line BRT service. The station is the northern terminus of the Red Line, the eastern terminus of the Orange Line in the Los Angeles County Metro Liner system. Red Line service hours are from 4:30 AM until 1:00 AM daily. Metro Liner Orange Line BRT service hours are from 4:00 AM until 1:00 AM daily. Metro constructed a second entrance on the west side of Lankershim Boulevard, which allows riders to connect between the Orange Line and the Red Line via an underground passageway; this underground connection was completed in August 2016. North Hollywood Metro station is located on Lankershim Boulevard, which forms the western border of the station and parking lot.
It is one block West of Vineland Avenue. The station is located in district of the same name in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. Since the opening of the station in 2000, transit-oriented developments have begun to be constructed adjacent to the station. NoHo Tower is across the street from the station and NoHo Commons, a multi-use complex which includes several floors of apartments above a level of retail. In September 2007, transportation officials approved NoHo Art Wave, the largest "transit-oriented" development in L. A. County history, consisting of a $1.3-billion apartment and high-rise office tower complex totaling more than 1,700,000 square feet of development on 15.6 acres. That project did not start due to the recession but in 2016 a public-private partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority was proposed on the 16 acres surrounding the station; the Southern Pacific Railway built the Lankershim Depot in 1896 on land, adjacent to the current Orange Line platforms.
It served as a stop on the Pacific Electric system after its North Hollywood Line opened in 1911. In 2014, the station was restored for a cost of $3.6 million, is occupied by a coffee shop. Firestone is an elevated light rail station on the Los Angeles County Metro Blue Line. The Manchester/I-110 Station of the Metro Silver Line is located around 3 miles west of the station; the station has an island platform on the Blue Line right-of-way alongside Graham Avenue near the intersection of Firestone Boulevard in the unincorporated community of Firestone Park. An island platform is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to cost-effective reasons, they are useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. An alternative arrangement is to position side platforms on either side of the tracks; the historical use of island platforms depends upon the location. In the United Kingdom the use of island platforms is common when the railway line is in a cutting or raised on an embankment, as this makes it easier to provide access to the platform without walking across the tracks. Island platforms are necessary for any station with many through platforms. Building small two-track stations with a single island platform instead of two side platforms does have advantages.
Island platforms allow facilities such as shops and waiting rooms to be shared between both tracks rather than being duplicated or present only on one side. An island platform makes it easier for wheelchair users and other people with physical limitations to change services between tracks or access facilities. If the tracks are above or below the entrance level, an island platform layout requires only one staircase and one elevator be built to access the platforms. Building the tracks and entrance at the same level creates a disadvantage. If an island platform is not wide enough to cope with passenger numbers, overcrowding can be a problem. Examples of stations where a narrow island platform has caused safety issues include Clapham Common and Angel on the London Underground. An island platform requires the tracks to diverge around the center platform, extra width is required along the right-of-way on each approach to the station on high-speed lines. Track centers vary for rail systems throughout the world but are 3 to 5 meters.
If the island platform is 6 meters wide, the tracks must slew out by the same distance. While this requirement is not a problem on a new line under construction, it makes building a new station on an existing line impossible without altering the tracks. A single island platform makes it quite difficult to have through tracks, which are between the local tracks. A common configuration in busy locations on high speed lines is a pair of island platforms, with slower trains diverging from the main line so that the main line tracks remain straight. High-speed trains can therefore pass straight through the station, while slow trains pass around the platforms; this arrangement allows the station to serve as a point where slow trains can be passed by faster trains. A variation at some stations is to have the slow and fast pairs of tracks each served by island platforms A rarer layout, present at Mets-Willets Point on the IRT Flushing Line, 34th Street – Penn Station on the IRT Seventh Avenue Line and 34th Street – Penn Station on the IND Eighth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway, uses two side platforms for local services with an island in between for express services.
The purpose of this atypical design was to reduce unnecessary passenger congestion at a station with a high volume of passengers. Since the IRT Seventh Avenue Line and IND Eighth Avenue Line have adjacent express stations at 42nd Street, passengers can make their transfers from local to express trains there, leaving more space available for passengers utilizing intercity rail at Pennsylvania Station; the Willets Point Boulevard station was renovated to accommodate the high volume of passengers coming to the 1939 World's Fair. Many of the stations on the Great Central Railway were constructed in this form; this was. If this happened, the lines would need to be compatible with continental loading gauge, this would mean it would be easy to change the line to a larger gauge, by moving the track away from the platform to allow the wider bodied continental rolling stock to pass while leaving the platform area untouched. In Sydney, on the Eastern Suburbs Railway and the Epping Chatswood Railway, the twin tunnels are spaced and the tracks can remain at a constant track centres while still leaving room for the island platforms. 7th Street/Metro Center 7th Street/Metro Center/Julian Dixon, is a metro station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system located in the Financial District of Downtown Los Angeles at the intersection of 7th Street and Flower Street. The station is served by the light rail Blue Line and Expo Line, heavy rail Red Line and Purple Line, by the bus rapid transit Silver Line; the Blue Line and Expo Line have their downtown terminus at this station. Many bus routes serve the station; this is one of only two stations in the entire system that has an underground side platform, the other being the Wilshire/Vermont station. The station was the first underground station in the Metro system, consists of three underground levels; the main concourse is on the first level down, the light rail side platforms are on the second level down, while the heavy rail island platform is on the third level down. A small first level mezzanine connects the light rail side platforms; the Metro Silver Line stops at the street level next to the station's entrances.
The station has direct access to The Bloc Shopping Mall with a pedestrian-friendly entrance from the mall directly to the subway station. Metro spent nearly $2 million worth of enhancements to 7th Street/Metro Center station as part of the Expo Line project, completed weeks before the Metro Expo Line began service to La Cienega/Jefferson Station; this enhancement included improved signage in the station. California Shuttle Bus provides service to San Francisco and San Jose from a bus stop at the corner of Figueroa and 7th streets. The under construction Regional Connector Transit Corridor will result in the Blue Line and Expo Line continuing north from this station terminus through Downtown Los Angeles to connect with the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station on the Gold Line, which will become an underground subway station and move across the street; the Expo Line will be defunct upon opening of the tunnel, with the Gold Line using its route from 7th Street to Santa Monica, proceeding through the tunnel to its normal route to Atlantic station, while the Blue Line will follow the Gold Line's old route from APU to Little Tokyo proceed through the tunnel to 7th Street and run along its normal route to Long Beach. Downtown Long Beach station
Downtown Long Beach is an at-grade light rail station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located on 1st Street between Pine Avenue and Pacific Avenue in Downtown Long Beach in southwestern California; this station is the southern terminus of the Blue Line route and only offers northbound service, as it is located in a loop. The light rail station is a key part of the Long Beach Transit Mall, which extends along 1st Street between Pacific Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard; as the city's major transit center, this section of 1st Street is closed to private vehicles and only trains and transit vehicles are allowed. From 1990 to July 2013, the station was known as Transit Mall Station. In 2010, a $7 million project was undertaken by Long Beach Transit to upgrade the transit mall. New bus shelters were constructed, with new artwork; the project was completed in spring 2011. During the 2028 Summer Olympics, the station will serve spectators traveling to and from Olympic venues located in Long Beach.
