Hoopla Digital (stylized as "hoopla") is a web and mobile (iOS/Android[1]) platform that provides a wide range of digital content (audio books, movies, music, ebooks, comics, and TV). hoopla allows library patrons to download or stream media content free of charge (paid for by their local library system[2]).

Hoopla Digital is a division of the Holland, Ohio-based company Midwest Tape,[3][4] and is housed in the same facility.[5]

Business Model[edit]

Hoopla is free to library patrons. The content is paid for by the library systems using a "per circulation transaction model."[6]

Content[edit]

Hoopla claims to have over 500,000 content titles across six formats.[6][7]

As of November 2016, Audiobooks make up the majority of their circulations (35%) followed by movies (22%), music (19%), ebooks (12%), comics (6%), and television (6%).[7]

Movies: Contracts with publishers such as Lionsgate,[8] Disney,[9] Warner Brothers,[10] Starz,[11] and others.

Audiobooks: Contracts with publishers such as Tantor Audio,[12] Harper Collins,[13] Blackstone Audio,[14] Simon & Schuster Audio,[15] and others.

Technology[edit]

hoopla content can be borrowed and consumed on the web or via native apps for iOS/Android.[1]

For viewing comics, hoopla has developed "Action View,"[16] a panel-by-panel viewer which allows readers to follow the comic action and dialog one panel at a time, instead of zooming in and out on a phone/tablet.

Parent company[edit]

Hoopla's parent company, Midwest Tape LLC, is a library vendor of physical media such as audiobooks, CDs, and DVD/Blu-ray, founded by John Eldred and Jeff Jankowski.[17] Midwest Tape began business in 1989. Its president since inception has been John Eldred.[18][19]
