Basketball

Basketball is a non-contact team sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players each. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high that is mounted to a backboard at each end of the court. The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket being defended by the opposition team during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time is mandated when the score is tied at the end of regulation. The ball can be advanced on the court by passing it to a teammate and it is a violation to lift, or drag, ones pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling. The game has many techniques for displaying skill—ball-handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, dunking, shot-blocking. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coachs game plan, Basketball is one of the worlds most popular and widely viewed sports. Outside North America, the top clubs from national leagues qualify to continental championships such as the Euroleague, the FIBA Basketball World Cup attracts the top national teams from around the world. Each continent hosts regional competitions for teams, like EuroBasket. The FIBA Womens Basketball World Cup features the top womens basketball teams from continental championships. The main North American league is the WNBA, whereas the EuroLeague Women has been dominated by teams from the Russian Womens Basketball Premier League, in early December 1891, Canadian Dr. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot elevated track. Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball and these laces could cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed by Naismith, dribbling was not part of the original game except for the bounce pass to teammates. Passing the ball was the means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a part of the game around the 1950s

Georgia Bulldogs basketball

The Georgia Bulldogs basketball program is the mens college basketball team representing the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Established in 1891, the team has competed in the Southeastern Conference since its inception in 1932, as of 2014 the Bulldogs have amassed a record of 1334–1237. The school has produced a number of basketball greats, notably Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins. The teams current head coach is Mark Fox, in just his second season, Fox coached the Bulldogs to a 21–11 record, including a 9–7 record in conference play, and their first at-large NCAA Tournament bid since 2002. Georgia was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Georgia participated in the SIAA from its establishment in 1895 until 1921, in 1921, the Bulldogs, along with 12 other teams, left the SIAA and formed the Southern Conference. In 1932, the Georgia Bulldogs left the Southern Conference to form, coach Rex Enright led Georgia to great success in the old Southern Conference during the 1931 and 1932 seasons. His 1931 team finished with a 23–2 record, the Bulldogs were upset in the Southern Conference tournament semi-finals by Maryland, 26–25. The 1932 team didnt have the record that the 1931 team did. But this team did something that the years team could not do in winning the Southern Conference tournament defeating Mississippi State, Virginia, Duke. Coach Hugh Durham brought Georgia to its first ever post season appearance in 1981 and that team finished with a 19–12 record. They earned an NIT bid and the surrounding the program earned them home games in first defeating Old Dominion. The 1982 Bulldogs were 19–12 were once again NIT bound and this time UGA made it all the way to the NIT Final Four defeating Temple, Maryland, and Virginia Tech before losing a heart breaker to Purdue at Madison Square Garden. These two teams marked the beginning of a post season streak of eight seasons, longest in Georgia basketball history. This string included three NCAA appearances and five NIT bids and this was a remarkable streak of consistency for a program that had never before experienced the post season beyond the SEC tournament. Former NBA star Dominique Wilkins is considered the greatest player in school history, however, Wilkins never played in the NCAA tournament, the Bulldogs made their first NCAA appearance in 1983—which would have been Wilkins senior year had he not opted for the NBA. The 1983 team made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Championship before being eliminated by eventual champion North Carolina State, the latter two victories coming at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY. North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball

The North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball program is the intercollegiate mens basketball team of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. North Carolinas six NCAA Tournament Championships are third-most all-time, behind UCLA, the program has produced many notable players who went on to play in the NBA, including three of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, Billy Cunningham, Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Many Tar Heel assistant coaches have gone on to head coaches elsewhere. From the Tar Heels first season in 1910–11 through the 2016–17 season, the Tar Heels also have the most consecutive 20-win seasons with 31 seasons from the 1970–71 season through the 2000–2001 season. On March 2,2010, North Carolina became the college basketball program to reach 2,000 wins in its history. The Tar Heels are currently ranked 3rd all time in wins trailing Kentucky by 33 games, the Tar Heels are one of only four Division I Mens Basketball programs to have ever achieved 2,000 victories. Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke are the other three, Carolina has played 160 games in the NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels have appeared in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game 11 times, the Tar Heels have made it into the NCAA tournament 45 times, and have amassed 116 victories. North Carolina also won the National Invitation Tournament in 1971, additionally, the team has been the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament 16 times, the latest being in 2017. North Carolina has ended the season ranked in the Top-25 of the AP Poll 43 times, further, the Tar Heels have finished the season ranked #1 in the AP Poll 5 times and ranked #1 in Coaches Poll 5 times. In 2008, the Tar Heels received the first unanimous preseason #1 ranking in the history of either the Coaches Poll or the AP Poll, in 2012, ESPN ranked North Carolina #1 on its list of the 50 most successful programs of the past 50 years. North Carolina played its first basketball game on January 27,1910, in 1921, the school joined the Southern Conference. The 1924 Tar Heels squad went 26–0, and was awarded the national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1943. Overall, the Tar Heels played 32 seasons in the Southern Conference from 1921 to 1953, during that period they won 304 games and lost 111 for a winning percentage of 73. 3%. The Tar Heels won the Southern Conference regular season 9 times, in 1953, North Carolina split from the Southern Conference and became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The title game was the triple overtime final game in championship history. In 1960, the Tar Heels were placed on NCAA probation for improper recruiting entertainment of basketball prospects, as a result, they were barred from the 1961 NCAA tournament and also withdrew from the 1961 ACC Tournament. The history of basketball is traced back to a YMCA International Training School, known today as Springfield College, located in Springfield, Massachusetts. The date of the first formal basketball game played at the Springfield YMCA Training School under Naismiths rules is generally given as December 21,1891, Basketball began to spread to college campuses by 1893. Governing bodies in Canada include U Sports and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, each of these various organizations are subdivided into from one to three divisions based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. The first basketball games in the United States were played at YMCAs in 1891 and 1892, by 1893, the game was being played on college campuses. The original rules for basketball were very different from todays modern rules of the sport, in the beginning James Naismith established 13 original rules, The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist, a player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, the ball must be held by the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it, no shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping in any way of an opponent is allowed. A foul will be called when a player is seen striking at the ball with the fist, or when violations of rules 3 and 4, if either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, if the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal. When the ball out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field, the thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent, if any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and he shall have power to disqualify men according to rule 5. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to side it belongs. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals, the time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between. University of Georgia

Its primary location is a 762-acre campus adjacent to the college town of Athens, Georgia, approximately an hours drive from the global city of Atlanta. The university has been labeled one of the Public Ivies, a publicly funded university considered to provide a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. The university was founded in 1785 as the United States first state-chartered university and its historic North Campus is on the U. S. National Register of Historic Places as a designated historic district. The contiguous campus areas include rolling hills, gardens, and extensive green space including nature walks, fields, shrubbery, and large and varied arboreta. Close to the campus is the universitys 58-acre Health Sciences Campus that also has an extensive landscaped green space, more than 400 trees. Consisting of thirteen separate libraries, the UGA Libraries rank among the nation’s largest and best research libraries containing 5.7 million volumes, the University of Georgia is one of 126 member institutions that comprise the Association of Research Libraries. The university is organized into seventeen schools and colleges, the university has three primary campuses. The largest one is the campus in Athens that has 460 buildings. The university has two campuses located in Atlanta and Lawrenceville, Georgia. The university operates several service and outreach stations spread across the state, the total acreage of the university in 30 Georgia counties is 41,539 acres. Varsity and intramural student athletics are a part of student life. UGA served as a member of the SEC in 1932. In their 121-year history, the varsity sports teams have won 39 national championships and 130 conference championships. The Georgia Redcoat Marching Band, the marching band of the university, plays at sports. The Senatus Academicus was composed of the Board of Visitors and the Board of Trustees with the Georgia Senate presiding over those two boards, the first meeting of the universitys board of trustees was held in Augusta, Georgia on February 13,1786. The meeting installed its first president, Abraham Baldwin, a native of Connecticut, Baldwin was a delegate to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, and one of two Georgia delegates to sign the final document. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also known as UNC, or simply Carolina, is a public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. It is one of the 17 campuses of the University of North Carolina system, the first public institution of higher education in North Carolina, the school opened its doors to students on February 12,1795. The university offers degrees in over 70 courses of study through fourteen colleges, in 1952, North Carolina opened its own hospital, UNC Health Care, for research and treatment, and has since specialized in cancer care. The schools students, alumni, and sports teams are known as Tar Heels, the campus covers 729 acres of Chapel Hills downtown area, encompassing the Morehead Planetarium and the many stores and shops located on Franklin Street. Students can participate in over 550 officially recognized student organizations, the student-run newspaper The Daily Tar Heel has won national awards for collegiate media, while the student radio station WXYC provided the worlds first internet radio broadcast. North Carolina is one of the members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Competing athletically as the Tar Heels, North Carolina has achieved success in sports, most notably in mens basketball, womens soccer. As a result, Womans College was renamed the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in 1955, UNC Chapel Hill officially desegregated its undergraduate divisions. During World War II, UNC Chapel Hill was one of 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which offered students a path to a Navy commission, during the 1960s, the campus was the location of significant political protest. Prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, protests about local racial segregation which began quietly in Franklin Street restaurants led to mass demonstrations, the climate of civil unrest prompted the 1963 Speaker Ban Law prohibiting speeches by communists on state campuses in North Carolina. The law was criticized by university Chancellor William Brantley Aycock and university President William Friday. A group of UNC Chapel Hill students, led by Student Body President Paul Dickson, filed a lawsuit in U. S. federal court, and on February 20,1968, the Speaker Ban Law was struck down. From the late 1990s and onward, UNC Chapel Hill expanded rapidly with a 15% increase in student population to more than 28,000 by 2007. Professor Oliver Smithies was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2007 for his work in genetics, additionally, Aziz Sancar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015 for his work in understanding the molecular repair mechanisms of DNA. The current chancellor is Carol Folt, the first woman to hold the post, UNC Chapel Hills 729-acre campus is dominated by two central quads, Polk Place and McCorkle Place. Adjacent to Polk Place is a sunken brick courtyard known as the Pit where students will gather, the Morehead–Patterson Bell Tower, located in the heart of campus, tolls the quarter-hour. Charles Doak

Charles Glenn Chick Doak coached baseball at North Carolina State University from 1924 to 1939 where he accumulated 145 wins,131 losses,6 ties. Doak also played in the leagues and coached several college teams, such as at Guilford College, the University of North Carolina. Doak led the Wolfpack to the South Atlantic Championship only twice in his 16 seasons as coach, Doak remained on NC States physical education faculty until 1955. The baseball field to the east of Reynolds Coliseum was named in his honor, and his sons, Charles and Robert, both played baseball for NC State. After Nathaniel Cartmell was fired as the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball coach in 1914 for playing dice with known gamblers, Doak was generally more interested in coaching baseball and was not fully focused on coaching basketball. During the 1915–16 season, it was too difficult to get referees, Doak was fairly successful as the head coach of the basketball team, but stepped down as head coach after the 1916 season to be replaced by Howell Peacock. The Virginia Cavaliers mens basketball program represents the University of Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Division I of the NCAA. The team is coached by Tony Bennett, since 2006, the team has played at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, seating 14,593 and the largest arena in the state of Virginia. Virginia won the 1976 ACC Tournament and 2014 ACC Tournament, and were Runners-Up of the 1977,1982,1983,1990,1994, the Wahoos, as they are unofficially known, have appeared in the NCAA Tournament twenty-one times, with six Elite Eight appearances. Their most successful results were in the 1981 and 1984 Final Fours, in the former, they won the final NCAA third place game, in their recent renaissance under Bennett, they have tallied Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2014 and 2016, reaching the Elite Eight in the latter. The Cavaliers also won the NIT Tournaments of 1980 and 1992, as of April 2017, Virginia has been ranked in every AP Poll of the last 3 years,2 months and 5 days—the longest current ranking streak of any ACC program and best in school history. Governor of North Carolina

The Governor of North Carolina is the head of the executive branch of North Carolinas state government and serves as commander-in-chief of the states military forces. The current governor is Roy Cooper who took office on January 1,2017, among other responsibilities, the governor heads the Council of State. The Governor of North Carolina was the last state chief executive to receive veto power, the Governor of North Carolina has extensive powers of appointment of executive branch officials, some judges, and members of boards and commissions. Nevertheless, the office has an amount of institutional power compared to governors in other states. Originally, under the first North Carolina Constitution, the office was very weak, dudley became the first governor elected by the people in 1836. Governors served two-year terms from 1836 until a new constitution was adopted in 1868, since then, well into the twentieth century, the North Carolina state constitution made the states governor one of the weakest in the nation. Until an amendment was added to the constitution in 1971, North Carolina Governors could only serve a single four-year term. After the amendment was passed, in 1980 James B. Hunt became the first governor in history to be elected to a second term. Governors are still limited to two consecutive four-year terms, but they may run for further non-consecutive terms. Governor Hunt did just that, winning election to a third, the Lieutenant Governor is also limited to two consecutive four-year terms. North Carolina was also the last state in the Union to give its governors veto power over legislation, after the state gained its independence from Britain, the state constitution deliberately weakened the executive branch of state government and strengthened the legislative branch. Since the end of Reconstruction in the 1870s the overwhelming majority of the governors have been Democrats. The only Republican to be elected Governor between 1876 and 1972 was Daniel L. Russell, who served 1897–1901, even so, Republicans have still had difficulty in winning gubernatorial elections in North Carolina, and the office has usually remained in Democratic hands. Luther H. Hodges
–
Luther Hartwell Hodges was an American politician, who served as the 64th Governor of the state of North Carolina from 1954 to 1961 and as United States Secretary of Commerce from 1961 to 1965. Hodges left for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at age 17 and he then went to work at Carolina Cotton and Woolen Mills in Leaksville, which was later purchased by Marshall Field. He remained with the company, working his way up from millworker to executive positions, in 1923, he helped form the Leaksville Rotary Club, which later became known as the Eden Rotary. In the 1940s, he was appointed to the state Board of Education, in 1945, he served as a consultant to the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture and to the U. S. Army in occupied Germany. Hodges was elected the states 22nd lieutenant governor in 1952 and succeeded to the position of governor in November 1954 upon the death of Governor William B, two years later, he was elected on his own to a four-year term as governor. Research Triangle Park was established while he was governor, when he left his Washington post in 1965, he returned to Chapel Hill and was chairman of Research Triangle Park. In 1967, he served a term as president of Rotary International. During his time in office, Governor Hodges promoted industrialization and education, Hodges opposed implementation of the US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. In a 1955 editorial, Governor Hodges position with regard to Brown was that in order to evade the Supreme Court ruling, North Carolina should adopt voluntary segregation. His argument was articulated by Jones, The white people of North Carolina control the state economically and politically, the fact may well be faced once and for all. The white people are determined that there shall be no mixed schools in this state, before they allow this to happen they will pull down the pillars of the temple. Upon learning of the case through the civil rights lawyer Conrad Lynn and she phoned Eisenhower and Justice Department officials, calling the case an ethical and international disgrace and demanded that he put a stop to this persecution. Hodges was ordered to release the children and destroy their records, prior to this Hodges had refused to show any clemency to nine-year-old James Hanover Thompson, and seven-year-old David Simpson. Sissy Marcus kissed the boys out of affection as she had recognized Thompson as a friend she has played with while his mother worked for Sissys mother, Bernice Marcus became enraged when Sissy told her the story, called the police and accused the boys of assault. During this time, no judge from North Carolina would overrule Price. The families of the children were under attack from the local Ku Klux Klan, which had a headquarters in Monroe, who burned crosses in front of the families houses, the Monroe chapter included over 7000 members even though the population of Monroe was only 12,000. In a National Public Radio interview in 2011, they still remembered sweep bullets off front porch, although Hodges was embarrassed by the international press coverage to eventually pardon the children, he refused to apologize for harsh treatment of them. He died on October 6,1974, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, there is a monument in his honor near a water fountain in Edens Freedom Park

The International Standard Book Number is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned on or after 1 January 2007, the method of assigning an ISBN is nation-based and varies from country to country, often depending on how large the publishing industry is within a country. The initial ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering created in 1966, the 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108. Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure, however, this can be rectified later. Another identifier, the International Standard Serial Number, identifies periodical publications such as magazines, the ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 in the United Kingdom by David Whitaker and in 1968 in the US by Emery Koltay. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108, the United Kingdom continued to use the 9-digit SBN code until 1974. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978, an SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prefixing the digit 0. For example, the edition of Mr. J. G. Reeder Returns, published by Hodder in 1965, has SBN340013818 -340 indicating the publisher,01381 their serial number. This can be converted to ISBN 0-340-01381-8, the check digit does not need to be re-calculated, since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland European Article Number EAN-13s. Rex Enright

Rex Edward Enright was an American football and basketball player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He played college football and college basketball at the University of Notre Dame in the 1920s, after graduating from Notre Dame in 1926, he played professional football in the National Football League with the Green Bay Packers for two seasons. Enright served as the football coach at the University of South Carolina from 1938 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1956. He was also the basketball coach at the University of Georgia from 1931 to 1938 and at South Carolina for one season in 1942–43. Enright was the son of James E. Enright and May C and he was born in Rockford, Illinois. He graduated from Central High School in Rockford, where he played on the 1918 state champion basketball team and he then graduated from the University of Notre Dame where he played running back for Knute Rockne on the football team, and also played on the Irish basketball team. They had daughters Eugenia M. Alice E. and Joyce, Enright played fullback for the Green Bay Packers in 1926 and 1927. In the early 1930s Enright was an assistant football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from 1931 to 1938, he was the head basketball coach at the University of Georgia and assistant football coach. In 1938, he was hired as football coach and athletic director at the University of South Carolina. After the 1942 season, he joined the United States Navy serving as a lieutenant and he returned to the Gamecocks in 1946 as head football coach succeeding John D. McMillan, and remained until 1955 when he resigned for health reasons. He hired Warren Giese as his successor, and continued as director until 1960. The Rex Enright Athletic Center on the South Carolina campus was named for him and he was considered one of the ring leaders in the formation of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. He is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and he died in 1960 of peptic ulcers and a rheumatic heart. Vernon Smith (American football)

Vernon Catfish Smith was an American football, basketball, and baseball player, coach, and military officer. A three-sport athlete at the University of Georgia, Smith was named to the 1931 College Football All-America Team as an end, after his playing days, he served as the co-head basketball coach at his alma mater during the 1937–38 season. Smith was also the baseball coach at Georgia from 1934 to 1937 and at the University of South Carolina from 1938 to 1939. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1979 and his nickname of Catfish is attributed to a story in which he bit the head off of one as a 25-cent bet while a student at Lanier High School in Macon. He and a friend were fishing in Walnut Creek, Smith played football at the University of Georgia from 1929 to 1931 and was named an All-American in 1931. The game was the first-ever played at Sanford Stadium, Smith wore number 9, and stood 62 and 190 pounds. He made an all-time Georgia Bulldogs football team picked in 1935 and he was nominated though not selected for an Associated Press All-Time Southeast 1920-1969 era team. Smith was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and he was also the head baseball coach at the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina. He then joined the United States Army Air Forces, retiring in 1963 with the rank of colonel, smiths sports honors include induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1966 and in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. His military honors included the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Reserve Medal and Air Force Longevity Medal. Elmer Andrew Lampe was an American football player and coach of football and basketball. He served as the football coach at Carleton College from 1932 to 1933 and at Carroll College—now Carroll University—in Waukesha. Lampe was also the basketball coach at the University of Georgia from 1938 to 1946 and at Dartmouth College from 1946 to 1950. Lampe went to college at the University of Chicago, where he was an All-American end and he graduated in 1926 with a Ph. B. Lampe began coaching football in 1931, serving as ends coach for Glenn Thistlethwaite at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1932 and 1933, he was football coach at Carleton College. Lampe became the 18th head football coach for the Carroll College in 1934 and his career coaching record at Carroll was 17–7–4. James Ralph Shug Jordan was an American football, basketball, and baseball player and coach of football and basketball. He served as the football coach at Auburn University from 1951 to 1975. He has the most wins of any coach in Auburn Tigers football history, Jordans 1957 Auburn squad went undefeated with a record of 10–0 and was named the national champion by the Associated Press. Jordan was also the mens basketball coach at Auburn and at the University of Georgia. During his time coaching basketball, he served as an assistant football coach at the two schools. Auburns Jordan–Hare Stadium was renamed in Jordans honor in 1973, Jordan was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1982. Born in Selma, Alabama, Jordan was nicknamed Shug as a child because of his love for sorghum sugar cane. A1932 graduate of Auburn, he lettered in football, basketball, Jordan was initiated into Theta Chi Fraternity at Auburn, and he started the Delta Beta chapter of Theta Chi at the University of Georgia. After graduation, Jordan became the basketball coach and an assistant football coach at Auburn. In ten seasons as the coach of the Auburn Tigers mens basketball team. Jordan also compiled 45 wins as head coach at Georgia. In addition to having the most wins by a coach in Auburn history. During World War II, Jordan fought in four major invasions as a United States Army officer and he saw action in North Africa and Sicily before being wounded in the invasion of Normandy and receiving a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After recovering from his wounds, he continued action in the Pacific theater, Jordan also hired George L. Buck Bradberry, Homer Hobbs, Gene Lorendo, all former Georgia players, and Charlie Waller. McGowen also served as Auburns head baseball coach from 1951 to 1957, by 1957 Jordan led Auburn to the Southeastern Conference title and AP national championship. In 1971, Jordan coached quarterback Pat Sullivan to the Heisman Trophy, the next year, Jordans Tigers upset heavily favored, arch-rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl, a victory which became known as Punt Bama Punt. In 1973, the university renamed Cliff Hare Stadium as Jordan–Hare Stadium in Jordans honor, when Jordan retired after the 1975 season, he had amassed a record of 176–83–6 for a.675 winning percentage. Orlando Henry Tubby Smith is an American college basketball coach. He is currently the mens head coach for the University of Memphis. Smith previously served in the role at the University of Tulsa, the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, the University of Minnesota. With Kentucky, he coached the Wildcats to the 1998 NCAA championship, in his 26 years as a head coach, Smith has achieved 24 winning seasons. In 2005, he joined Roy Williams, Nolan Richardson, Denny Crum, with Texas Techs invitation to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, Smith became only the second coach in history to lead five different teams to the NCAA tournament. Smiths three sons are following in their fathers coaching footsteps, Smith, who played for his father at the University of Georgia, is the coach at Loyola. His middle son Saul Smith played for his father at the University of Kentucky and is an assistant coach for his father, brian, his youngest son, was a point guard at Ole Miss and is an assistant coach at Windermere Preparatory School. Smith was born in Scotland, Maryland, in Saint Marys County and his large family accounts for his unusual nickname. Of all the Smith children, Tubby was most fond of staying in the washtub where the children were bathed. Smith says he tried to shake the moniker several times, and he recalls that a 10th grade teacher who didnt tolerate nicknames was the last person to call him by his proper name, Orlando. After having an offer from the University of Maryland rescinded, Smith enrolled at High Point College. He played under three different head coaches at High Point, including future boss J. D. Barnett and he lettered four times and was an all-conference performer as a senior. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education while at High Point, and also met his wife, Donna. In 1973, Smith began his career with four years at his high school alma mater – Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland. His next stop was Hoke County High School in Raeford, North Carolina, Smith began as assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth University under his former High Point coach J. D. Barnett. From 1979 to 1986, VCU amassed a 144–64 record, winning three Sun Belt Conference Championships, Smith took two important things away from his experience as an assistant coach for the Rams. First, under Barnett, Smith learned the principles of the ball-line defense, second was a relationship with fellow assistant David Hobbs, an assistant and associate head coach under Smith during his tenure at the University of Kentucky. Ronald Howard Ron Jirsa is an American college basketball coach who is currently an assistant coach at Radford. He has previously been the coach at the University of Georgia. Ronald Howard Jirsa was born in New London, Connecticut and grew up in nearby Ledyard, after graduating from Ledyard High School in 1977, Jirsa attended Gettysburg College. A member of the team, Jirsa graduated from Gettysburg in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He bounced around as an assistant coach, but had two significant stints at the University of Tulsa, first under J. D. Barnett from 1985 to 1988, Jirsa completing his Master of Arts degree in athletic administration at Tulsa in 1987 while assistant coach. Smith promoted Jirsa to associate coach in 1994, and Jirsa followed Smith to the University of Georgia. When Smith departed for the University of Kentucky in 1997, Jirsa remained at Georgia, although Jirsa led Georgia to third place in the 1998 National Invitation Tournament title in his first season, he was fired in 1999 after going 35-30. Jirsa moved to Dayton and was an assistant for four seasons there before getting another head coaching job at Marshall, Jirsa was fired after four seasons at Marshall, going 43-74. Most recently, he served under Tubby Smith as an assistant at the University of Minnesota, on March 25,2013, it was announced that Smith, along with his entire staff had been relieved as coaches at Minnesota. In the 2013–14 season, Jirsa was recruiting coordinator at Division III Bethel University in Minnesota, the following season, Jirsa joined Steve Paynes coaching staff as an assistant at Tennessee Tech. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Harrick graduated in 1960 from Morris Harvey College, now known as the University of Charleston. On November 20,2009 Sally Lee Harrick, his wife of 49 years, Harricks coaching career began at Morningside High School in Inglewood, California where he served as an assistant coach from 1964–1969 and as head coach from 1970–1973. He was then hired as an assistant coach at Utah State from 1974–1977, Harrick then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA from 1978–1979. His first collegiate coaching job was at Pepperdine University in 1979. In 1988, he returned to UCLA to assume head coaching duties after the firing of Walt Hazzard, during the recruiting period before his first season, he recruited Don MacLean, the most significant recruit to commit to Westwood in several years. McLeans arrival helped start a revival of the basketball program, during the 1994–1995 season, he led UCLA to a 31–2 record and the schools eleventh national championship, its first since the 1974–75 season. The 31 wins would stand as a record until the 2005–06 season. A year later, Harricks Bruins were upset in the first round by Princeton, as it turned out, this would be the last game Harrick would coach in Westwood. Since Harrick paid for the meal, it amounted to an improper extra benefit for Dollar. To cover up their presence, Harrick included the names of his wife, when the school investigated, Harrick told Holton to tell athletic director Peter Dalis that Holtons wife was at the meal. However, a day later, Holton confessed that wasnt true, on November 6,1996, Dalis and school chancellor Chuck Young gave Harrick an ultimatum, resign by the next morning or be fired. Harrick opted to take the firing, although picking up the tab for Dollar and OBannon was a secondary violation at best, Young and Dalis felt Harricks attempted cover-up was unforgivable. However, Harrick claims that the NCAA has cleared him of wrongdoing and he left UCLA as the schools second-winningest coach, behind only Wooden. However, he is now third behind Wooden and Ben Howland, after a one-year hiatus, Harrick returned to coaching by accepting the head coach position at Rhode Island. He coached the Rams for two seasons, where in both years they qualified for the NCAA Tournament, during the 1998 tournament, the Rams upset Kansas in the second round and reached the Midwest Regional finals but were defeated by Stanford 79–77. In his second season, he managed to recruit Lamar Odom, after the season, he left URI to become the head coach at the University of Georgia. He served there for four seasons, leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA tournament twice following a losing record and his tenure at Georgia ended in controversy in the spring of 2003. His son, Jim Harrick, Jr. a Georgia assistant, got into trouble for paying $300 in expenses for one of his players and he also gave an A to Cole, Rashad Wright and Chris Daniels for a basketball strategy class even though they never attended it

Mark Leslie Fox is the current head mens basketball coach at the University of Georgia. Fox was the coach for the Nevada Wolf Pack basketball team from 2004 to 2009. While with the Wolf Pack, Fox compiled an record of 123-43. He also guided Nevada to five appearances in five years including three NCAA tournaments. The Wolf Pack also won the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship in 2005,2006,2007, in 2006, the team won the conference tournament as well. Fox was named coach of the year twice while with Nevada. On April 3,2009, it was announced that Fox would leave Nevada for the position at the University of Georgia. In his first year as coach, Fox and the Bulldogs went 14-17. The highlights of the season included victories over the Tennessee Volunteers, in 2011, Foxs second season, the Bulldogs made improvements. The 2010-11 team won 21 games, finished 3rd in the SEC East, in 2011-12, the Bulldogs posted another sub-.500 record and finished near the bottom of the SEC with a 5-11 record. After making the NIT in 2013-14, Fox got his back to the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15. That Spartans team would make it to the Final Four. Crean and his wife have three children, Megan, Riley, and Ainsley, Crean says he is a Christian. From 1990 to 1994 Crean served as the head coach under Ralph Willard at Western Kentucky. When Willard left Western Kentucky to become coach at Pittsburgh in 1994. Ultimately Crean followed Willard to Pittsburgh, serving as head coach for one year. In 1995, Crean returned to Michigan State as assistant coach under the leadership of Tom Izzo, Izzo and Crean became such good friends that Crean lived in Izzos house and Izzo was an usher in Creans wedding. Nathaniel Cartmell

Nathaniel John Cartmell, also known as Nat and Nate, was an American athlete who won medals at two editions of the Olympic Games. He is also known for being the first head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team, in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, Cartmell won silver medals in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter straightaway. He also participated in the 60 meters event but was eliminated in the repechage, Cartmell was a member of the gold medal American medley relay team at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He was the runner on the squad, running 200 meters. He followed William Hamilton and was followed by John Taylor and Mel Sheppard, in both the first round heat and the final Cartmell received a lead from Hamilton and built upon it before turning over the race to Taylor. The team won races, running the 1,600 meters in 3,27.2 in the first round and 3,29.4 in the final. Cartmells split for the final was 22.2 seconds and he won the bronze medal in the 200 meter race at the same Games, taking his second medal in the event. In the first round, Cartmell won with a time of 23.0 seconds, the second round resulted in a 22. 6-second time and another win. Cartmell placed third in the final with a time of 22.7 seconds, in the 100 meters, Cartmell placed fourth. He won his first round heat and semifinal with times of 11.0 and 11.2 seconds and he ran the final in 11.0 seconds. While at the 1908 Olympics, Cartmell reportedly got into a fight with a policeman who thrust himself into face, in response, Cartmell took the policemans hand, pushed him and then ran off knowing that the policeman could not catch him on foot. Later, the police showed up at the hotel where the team for the U. S. team was staying and arrested Charles Hollaway. Cartmell came to UNC in 1909 as a coach for the Tar Heels. In 1910, student Marvin Rich along with school officials helped lobby to create a varsity basketball squad at UNC. There was no coach for this program, and UNC did not have enough money at the time to hire another full-time coach for this sport. Cartmell was asked to be the first coach even though he did not know much about the sport, the Tar Heels won their first game 42–21. The Tar Heels would end their first season with a 7–4 record, in 1914, Cartmell was charged with illegally playing dice with known gamblers and was fired after the 1914 season. He would be replaced by Charles Doak, Cartmell went on to coach track and sometimes basketball at West Virginia University, Princeton University, Fordham University, Manhattan College and LaSalle Military Academy

Fred Boye

Frederick William Boye was an American basketball coach, best known for being the head coach of mens college basketball at the University of North Carolina from 1919–21. Prior to Boye, Howell Peacock was the coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team. After Peacocks departure, Boye was hired to coach the team. Boye, a former World War I veteran, took over an experienced Tar Heel squad, in his second year, he was more successful, earning a 12–8 record and going undefeated at home. Although the new conference was established during the 1920–21 season, North Carolina did not play games in the conference until the following year. Boye left as coach after the conclusion of the 1920–21 season. The Tar Heels did not secure a replacement for head coach for the two seasons. Nevertheless, they managed to be successful than they were under Boye. In the 1921–22 season, the team went 15–6 and won the Southern Conference Tournament, in the 1922–23 season, they had even more success going 15–1, undefeated in conference play, and tying for first in the Southern Conference. Angus Morris Monk McDonald was an American college athlete, a head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team, and a urologist. For his collegiate and coaching career, he was inducted in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, Monk McDonald was born as Angus Morris McDonald on February 21,1901, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Angus Morris, Sr. and Ann Howard McDonald. Monk McDonalds father, Angus Morris Sr. was the founder of the Southern Real Estate Company and was a chairman on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, McDonald attended Charlotte High School and Fishburne Military School before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at North Carolina, McDonald, who was 5 feet,7 inches, played quarterback on the team, guard on the mens basketball team. McDonald lettered in all three sports for all four years and he is generally considered the best all-around athlete in North Carolina sports history. McDonald also won the first Patterson Medal, the most prestigious award for student-athletes at the University of North Carolina, McDonald lettered in football for the four years that he attended North Carolina. McDonald most successful season in football came in 1922 when, as quarterback, he led North Carolina to a 9–1 record and led North Carolina to a first place standing in the Southern Conference. During one game that season, McDonald had a return of 95 yards against in-state rival NC State. During his baseball career, McDonald batted over.300 and helped his team to 19 wins, McDonald was good enough to be considered a prospective professional baseball player. McDonald first played for North Carolina under head coach Fred Boye for the 1920–21 season, after the 1920–21 season, North Carolina was without a head coach for two years after Boye left the team. During the 1921–22 season, North Carolina played its first season in the Southern Conference, gained a 15–6 record, McDonald was named all-Southern Conference—an award given annually to the best basketball players during the regular season in the Southern Conference division—at the end of this season. Before the start of the 1923–24 season, Norman Shepard became the coach of North Carolina. This team earned the nickname the White Phantoms because of their fast playmaking, the 1923–24 North Carolina team managed to win all 26 games they played that year. Because there was no national tournament, the final game for North Carolina was in the Southern Conference tournament against the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. North Carolina managed to win the game 26–18 and this was the first national championship given to a North Carolina mens basketball team. After coaching North Carolina for one season, Norman Shepard went to the Far East to work as a manager for Liggett and Meyer tobacco company. Even though McDonald has just graduated from North Carolina and had started to attend medical school full-time, McDonald was the first former player to become head coach of the North Carolina mens basketball team, Matt Doherty would be the second. Harlan P. Sanborn was best known for being the head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies mens basketball team and the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team. Sanborn was the coach of Virginia Tech mens basketball during the 1916–17 basketball season. As head coach of the Hokies, Sanborn led the team to a record of 17–2, Sanborns.895 winning percentage is the second highest of any Virginia Tech mens basketball head coach. Sanborn left as coach after coaching only one season for Virginia Tech. After Monk McDonald left as the North Carolina head coach, Sanborn became the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. James Newton Ashmore was an American football, basketball and baseball coach. In addition, he was the baseball coach at Washington Agricultural, Millikin, Colorado, Iowa, DePauw. Ashmore was the head coach for the Washington State Cougars football team. George Edward Bo Shepard was best known for being the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team from 1931 through 1935. He was the child of Alexander Hurlbutt Shepard and Mary Augusta Westbrook. Bo Shepard attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, bos family had various ties to athletics at North Carolina. His brother, Norman Shepard, became the coach for North Carolina before Bo. Bo and Norman Shepard are the pair of sibling to have ever coached the North Carolina mens basketball team. In 1929, Bo Shepard joined the University of North Carolinas athletic faculty as an assistant graduate manager of athletics, in 1932, James Ashmore departed as the head coach of the North Carolina mens basketball team, and Bo Shepard took over as the new head coach. In his first regular season, Shepards North Carolina team was successful winning 13 of 17 games and 6 out of 9 games in conference. North Carolina beat Auburn to go to the finals of the Southern Conference championship where they lost a close game 24–26 to Georgia. At the end of the 1932–33 season,13 schools left the Southern Conference to create the Southeastern Conference, which changed the playing schedule. Going into the 1933–34 season, Shepard managed to recruit Ivan Jack Glace, Glace was originally not much of a basketball player. Was so awkward that he could walk without tripping over his feet. Shepard worked with Glace throughout his years and eventually he would become all-conference in his senior year. During the 1933–34 season, the Tar Heels went 11–4 in the regular season, in the 1934 Southern Conference Tournament, the Tar Heels won their first game against Virginia Tech, but lost in double overtime to South Carolina in the next round. The 1934–35 season saw an increase in the North Carolina Tar Heels as they managed to go 17–3 and this squad was helped out by a pair of siblings, Dave and Jim McCrachren that both played on the team. In the 1935 Southern Conference Tournament, the Tar Heels managed to beat Virginia in the first round, Shepards last season, 1935–36, would be his best. The Tar Heels only lost two games during the season and won the regular season championship for the first time in nine years. In the 1936 Southern Conference Championship, the Tar Heels beat South Carolina, NC State, Shepard has stated that in general his teams focused disproportionally on defense. Walter Skidmore

Walter Dennis Skidmore was an American basketball coach. He was best known for being the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team from 1935 through 1939. Skidmore had a record of 65–25 with the Tar Heels and led his team to win the Southern Conference Tournament in 1936, in his last year of coaching, Skidmore coached George Glamack who went on to become a star player at North Carolina. Skidmore took over coaching after Bo Shepard left as coach due to health problems. Skidmore was a native of Harlan County, Kentucky, and the son of a coal miner and he attended Centre College in Kentucky, graduating in 1926. Before becoming the basketball coach at North Carolina, Skidmore had coached the North Carolina junior varsity. He retired from coaching in 1939 and moved to Letcher County, from 1955 to 1970, Skidmore operated the Tar Heel Motel in Clinton, North Carolina. In April 1993, Skidmore died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at age 89

Bill Lange (coach)

William Fisher Bill Lange was an American basketball and football player and coach. He played college football and basketball for Wittenberg College from 1918 to 1921, during the 1922–23 season, he coached the Cleveland Rosenblums, an early professional basketball team that was known at the time as the fastest basket ball aggregation in this part of the country. From 1923 to 1936, he was the director and head football and basketball coach at Muskingum College in Ohio. He was best known for being the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels mens basketball team from 1939 through 1944. Lange was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1897 and raised in Huron, Lange attended Huron High School where he starred on the basketball and football teams. In June 1918, Lange was employed by the Cleveland Stevedore Co. in Huron, Lange joined the U. S. Naval Reserves in July 1918 and was called to active duty in November 1918. He served 108 days of duty and attained the rank of seaman second class. At the time of the 1920 United States Census, Lange was living in Huron, Ohio, with his mother, Mary Lange and he received his honorable discharge from the Naval Reserves in September 1921. Lange subsequently enrolled at Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio and he played college football as a tackle on Wittenberg football teams that went undefeated for consecutive seasons in 1919 and 1920. Lange also played on Wittenbergs basketball team and was selected to the All-Ohio team in both sports and he graduated from Wittenberg in 1921. After graduating from Wittenberg, Lange coached high school sports at London, during the 1922–23 academic year, he was a coach at West Tech High School in Cleveland. While coaching high school basketball in Cleveland, Lange also coached the Cleveland Rosenblums, the Rosenblums were an early professional basketball team that was known in 1923 as the fastest basket ball aggregation in this part of the country. The Rosenblums later became one of the members of the American Basketball League in 1925. Some sources indicate that Lange also played for the team, in September 1923, he was hired as the athletic director and head coach at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. He remained at Muskingum for 13 years until 1936, as the schools head football coach from 1923 to 1935, Lange led the school to an overall record of 71–32–6. He is the third winningest coach in the history of Muskingums football program, as Muskingums basketball coach, he compiled a record of 133–94. He also served as the athletic director for several years. During the 1925–26 and 1926–27 season, Lange led the Muskingum mens basketball team to records of 17–2 and 19–2 and his 1927 Muskingum mens basketball team won the Ohio Conference championship

Ben Carnevale

Bernard Louis Ben Carnevale was an American college mens basketball coach. Born in Raritan, New Jersey, Carnevale was a graduate of Somerville High School in Somerville and he graduated from New York University, where he was a member of the 1935 national championship team and played in the first National Invitation Tournament in 1938. While at NYU he was coached by the legendary Howard Cann and he served as a Navy officer during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. Carnevale was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970, while coaching at UNC, he led the team to their first appearance in the title game. The Tar Heels lost the game to Oklahoma A&M, who won their national crown under legendary coach Henry Iba. At the time of his death, Carnevale was living in Williamsburg and his son, Mark, is a professional golfer, who has won on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour. Frank Joseph McGuire was an American basketball coach. At the collegiate level, he was coach for three major programs, St. Johns, North Carolina, and South Carolina, winning over a hundred games at each. Born in New York City as the youngest of thirteen children in an Irish-American family, to New York police officer, Robert McGuire and his wife, the former Anne Lynch. He attended Xavier High School graduating in 1933, McGuire graduated from St. Johns University in 1936 and he served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, interrupting his work as a teacher and coach at his high school. Prior to 1947 he also played pro basketball briefly in the American Basketball League, after Joe Lapchick left St. Johns to coach the New York Knicks in 1947, McGuire became head basketball and baseball coach at his alma mater. He led the team to the College World Series in 1949. In 1952, McGuire left St. Johns to become coach at the University of North Carolina. On paper, this was a significant step down from St. Johns, however, school officials wanted a big-name coach to counter the rise of rival North Carolina State under Everett Case. In 1961, UNC was found guilty of major NCAA violations, combined with rumors of point shaving by some UNC players, this led Chancellor William Aycock to force McGuires resignation after the season. At McGuires suggestion, Aycock named McGuires top assistant, Dean Smith, shortly after he left North Carolina in 1961, McGuire became the head coach of the NBAs Philadelphia Warriors and coached Chamberlain during the Warriors last season in the city. The team moved to San Francisco in 1962 and McGuire resigned rather than go west with the team. Following his one season in the NBA, McGuire worked for two years in public relations in New York before returning to basketball as head coach at the University of South Carolina in 1964. The Gamecocks achieved national prominence under McGuire in his sixth year, ironically, Columbia, SC hosted the NCAA East Regional that same year. The Gamecocks 25 wins in 1970 are tied for second with Frank Martins 2016 team for the record for most wins in a season. McGuires Gamecocks won the ACC tournament in 1971, Frank McGuire remains the winningest coach in Gamecocks history by far. The playing surface at the Gamecocks former arena, Carolina Coliseum, is named Frank McGuire Arena in his honor and he is also an honorary brother of the Alpha Eta chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma at the University of South Carolina. McGuire holds the record for most victories in a season without a loss, together with Bobby Knight of the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers and he is one of 14 coaches, as of 2015, to take multiple schools to the Final Four. Dean Edwards Smith was an American mens college basketball head coach. Called a coaching legend by the Basketball Hall of Fame, he coached for 36 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Smith coached from 1961 to 1997 and retired with 879 victories, which was the NCAA Division I mens basketball record at that time. Smith had the 9th highest winning percentage of any college basketball coach. During his tenure as coach, North Carolina won two national championships and appeared in 11 Final Fours. Smith played college basketball at the University of Kansas, where he won a championship in 1952 playing for Hall of fame coach Phog Allen. Smith was known for running a program and having a high graduation rate. Smith coached and worked with people at North Carolina who achieved notable success in basketball, as players, coaches. Smith retired in 1997, saying that he was not able to give the team the same level of enthusiasm that he had given it for years, Dean Smith was born in Emporia, Kansas, on February 28,1931. Both of his parents were school teachers. Smiths father, Alfred, coached the Emporia High Spartans basketball team to the 1934 state title in Kansas and this 1934 team was notable for having the first African American basketball player in Kansas tournament history. While at Topeka High School, Smith lettered in all four years and was named all-state in basketball as a senior. Smiths interest in sports was not limited only to basketball, Smith also played quarterback for his high school football team and catcher for the high school baseball team. After graduating from school, Smith attended the University of Kansas on an academic scholarship where he majored in mathematics. While at Kansas, Smith continued his interest in sports by playing varsity basketball, varsity baseball, and freshman football, during his time on the varsity basketball team, Kansas won the national championship in 1952 and were NCAA tournament finalists in 1953. Smiths basketball coach during his time at Kansas was Phog Allen, after graduation, Smith served as assistant coach at Kansas in the 1953–54 season. Smith next served a stint in the United States Air Force in Germany, later working as a coach of United States Air Force Academys baseball. Yet, Smiths big break would come in the United States, in 1958, North Carolina coach Frank McGuire asked Smith to join his staff as an assistant coach. Bill Guthridge

William Wallace Bill Guthridge was an American college basketball coach. Guthridge initially gained recognition after serving for 30 years as Dean Smiths assistant at the University of North Carolina, following Dean Smiths retirement in 1997, Guthridge served as head coach of the Tar Heels for three seasons. He took the team to the NCAA Final Four twice in his three seasons and was named coach of the year in 1998, before retiring in 2000. Guthridge was born in Parsons, Kansas and he attended Kansas State University, and graduated with a B. S. in Mathematics in 1960 and an M. A. in Education in 1963. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, while a student at Kansas State, Guthridge played guard under head coach Fred Tex Winter, and helped the team advance to the 1958 Final Four. After graduating from Kansas State, he coached at Scott City High School in Kansas for two seasons before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach for Tex Winter from 1962-1967. In five years on Winters staff, Guthridge helped lead the Wildcats to a 93-43 record, a pair of Big Eight Conference crowns and he also was head golf coach for the Wildcats. Following his stint at Kansas State, from 1967-1997 Guthridge was an assistant at the University of North Carolina under head coach Dean Smith, from 1972 onward, he was Smiths top assistant. In 1976, he served as an assistant coach to Smith as the United States won the gold medal in mens basketball at the Summer Olympics in Montreal. As an assistant, Guthridge was renowned for his success in coaching the fundamentals of play to a long series of successful UNC big men. Guthridge also handled many day-to-day responsibilities in the program and oversaw UNCs summer basketball camps, while serving as an assistant coach, Guthridge turned down several head coaching opportunities, preferring to remain in Chapel Hill working alongside Smith. On one occasion, he accepted the head coaching post at Penn State. Dean Smith unexpectedly retired as head coach at North Carolina just two months before the start of the 1997–98 season, and Guthridge was named his successor. School officials stressed that Guthridge was not merely a placeholder for Roy Williams, in his three seasons as head coach Guthridge led the Tar Heels to the NCAA Final Four twice, in the 1998 tournament and again in the 2000 tournament. He is one of five people to have appeared in the Final Four as both a player and coach, in 1998, Guthridge inherited a team that had been to the 1997 Final Four the previous year under Coach Smith. Guthridge coached that team to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship, a school record-tying 34 wins and an appearance in the Final Four, following the 1997–98 season, several organizations named him National Coach of the Year and he received the Naismith College Coach of the Year award. In 2000, the team struggled in the season, falling out of the polls for the first time since the start of the 1990-91 season. Roy Williams (coach)

Roy Allen Williams is an American college basketball coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He first started his coaching career at North Carolina as an assistant coach for Dean Smith in 1978. In 2003, Williams left Kansas to return to his alma mater North Carolina, since returning to North Carolina Williams has won three national championships, eight Atlantic Coast Conference conference titles, and two ACC Coach of the Year awards. He is second all-time for most wins at both Kansas and North Carolina, Williams is currently ranked seventh in total victories by a mens NCAA Division I college coach, winning 816 games to date. He is also tenth all-time in the NCAA for winning percentage among mens college basketball coaches, on April 4,2005, Williams won his first national title as his Tar Heels defeated the University of Illinois in the 2005 NCAA championship game. In 2007, Williams was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and he again led the Tar Heels to a national title on April 6,2009, against the Michigan State Spartans. Williams won his national championship when he led the Tar Heels on April 3,2017 to victory against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Williams is one of six NCAA Mens Division I college basketball coaches to have won at least three national championships, Williams is the only basketball coach in NCAA history to have 350 or more victories at two NCAA Division 1 schools, Kansas and North Carolina. As a head coach, Williams has coached in a total of six NCAA championship games, Williams was born in Marion General Hospital in Marion, North Carolina, and spent his early years in the small western North Carolina towns of Marion and Spruce Pine. As a child his family relocated to nearby Asheville, where he grew up, Williams lettered in basketball and baseball at T. C. Roberson High School in Asheville, NC all four years, Williams has stated that Coach Baldwin was one of the biggest influences in his life. Williams went on to play on the team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. When Williams was a sophomore at Carolina, he asked Smith if he could attend his practices, Williams also volunteered to keep statistics for Smith at home games and worked in Smiths summer camps. Williams first coaching job was in 1973 as a school basketball and golf coach at Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain. He coached basketball and boys golf for five years and ninth-grade football for four years, in 1978, Williams came back to the University of North Carolina and served as an assistant to Coach Dean Smith from 1978 to 1988. During his tenure as assistant coach, North Carolina went 275–61 and won the NCAA national championship in 1982, the first for Smith, one of Williams more notable events came as assistant coach when he became instrumental in recruiting Michael Jordan. He was hired just months after the Danny Manning-led Jayhawks won the 1988 NCAA championship, weeks after Williams took the position, KU was placed on probation for violations that took place prior to his arrival. As a result, the Jayhawks were barred from play for the 1988–89 season
