Isochronous timing

A sequence of events is isochronous if the events occur or at equal time intervals. The term isochronous is used in several technical contexts, but refers to the primary subject maintaining a constant period or interval, despite variations in other measurable factors in the same system. Isochronous timing is a characteristic of a repeating event whereas synchronous timing refers to the relationship between two or more events. In dynamical systems theory, an oscillator is called isochronous if its frequency is independent of its amplitude. In horology, a mechanical clock or watch is isochronous if it runs at the same rate regardless of changes in its drive force, so that it keeps correct time as its mainspring unwinds or chain length varies. Isochrony is important in timekeeping devices. In electrical power generation, isochronous means that the frequency of the electricity generated is constant under varying load. In telecommunications, an isochronous signal is one where the time interval separating any two corresponding transitions is equal to the unit interval or to a multiple of the unit interval.

The term is used in data transmission to describe cases in which corresponding significant instants of two or more sequential signals have a constant phase relationship. Isochronous burst transmission is used when the information-bearer channel rate is higher than the input data signaling rate. In the Universal Serial Bus used in computers, isochronous is one of the four data flow types for USB devices, it is used for streaming data types such as video or audio sources. The IEEE 1394 interface standard called Firewire, includes support for isochronous streams of audio and video at known constant rates. In particle accelerators an isochronous cyclotron is a cyclotron where the field strength increases with radius to compensate for relativistic increase in mass with speed. An isochrone is a contour line of equal time, for instance, in geological layers, tree rings or wave fronts. An isochrone map or diagram shows such contours. In linguistics, isochrony is the postulated rhythmic division of time into equal portions by a language.

Highland Wildlife Management Area

Highland Wildlife Management Area is a 14,283-acre Wildlife Management Area in Highland County, Virginia. It consists of three separate tracts of land, centered on Jack Mountain, Bullpasture Mountain, Little Doe Hill. With the exception of an 80-acre clearing on Jack Mountain, once used as summer pasture land, the area is nearly covered by upland hardwood forest, consisting of oaks and hickories; the Bullpasture River flows through the area and is stocked with trout. The area is managed to enhance wildlife habitat, including maintaining small clearings as open space for wildlife, encouraging the growth of mast-producing trees to provide food. Highland Wildlife Management Area is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries; the area is open to the public for hunting, fishing, horseback riding, primitive camping. Henry Clifford (opera)

Henry Clifford is a grand opera in three acts composed by Isaac Albéniz to an English libretto written by Francis Money-Coutts. It premiered at the Gran Teatro del Liceo on 8 May 1895; the opera is based on historical figures and events and is set in 15th-century England during the Wars of the Roses, fought between the rival houses of Lancaster and York. The title character, Henry Clifford, 10th Baron de Clifford, was the only son of John Clifford, a Lancastrian commander killed in the bloodiest battle of the war, the Battle of Towton, on 29 March 1461. Henry Clifford himself was one of the chief commanders in the Battle of Flodden against the Scots in 1513. Henry Clifford was written in 1893-95, the first of a series of operas by Albéniz which were commissioned and supplied with English libretti by the wealthy Englishman Francis Money-Coutts. Other operas in the series are Pepita Merlin. Albéniz began writing the opera while living in London, but subsequently moved to Barcelona where he completed the piano-vocal score for the second act.

After a few months he became uncomfortable with the conservative cultural conditions under the Bourbon dynasty in Spain, moved to Paris where the remainder of the work was completed in 1894-95. Albéniz conducted the premiere of Henry Clifford in Barcelona at the Gran Teatro del Liceo on 8 May 1895; the singers included Emanuel Suagnes in the title role, Angelica Nava as Lady Clifford, Andrés Perellò de Segurola as Sir John Saint-John. Although the opera was written in English, Italian was standard at the Liceo, an Italian libretto was supplied by Giuseppe M. Arteaga Pereira; the libretto was published in both Italian. The work was given five performances with the final performance on May 12; the opera was reconstructed and recorded in 2002 by the Spanish musicologist and conductor José De Eusebio. On 24 January 2009, he conducted the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria in the world premiere performance of Henry Clifford with its original English libretto in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The performance was in concert version with John MacMaster as Henry Clifford, Ana María Sánchez as Lady Clifford, María Rey-Joly as Annie Saint-John, David Wilson-Johnson as Sir John Saint-John, Larissa Diadkova as Lady Saint-John. Writing about the 1895 Barcelona premiere, the newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the "applause and shouts of enthusiasm... still sound in our ears." The Spanish critic J. Roca y Roca, writing in the same newspaper, said: "Albéniz triumphed over everything: over the distrust of certain unimaginative spirits ill-disposed to recognize the superior merits of a composer who has excelled as an outstanding concert pianist; the critic blamed the shortness of the run on inadequate rehearsal, a lack of support from the theater's management, the fact that the first performances were at the end of the season. Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope

The Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope is a proposed 25 metres telescope, intended to reveal the cosmic origins of stars and galaxies with its submillimeter cameras and spectrometers enabled by superconducting detector arrays. The telescope was called the Cornell Caltech Atacama Telescope; the collaboration is building a smaller 6 metre submillimeter/millimeter telescope, the CCAT-prime as a first step before pursuing the 25 metre CCAT at some time in the future. CCAT-p will be located at the same site and share similar mission as the full sized CCAT, but with reduced capabilities compared to the CCAT; the planned site is at an altitude of 5,612 metres, on Cerro Chajnantor of the volcanic Purico Complex, in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. CCAT would be one of the highest ground-based telescopes in the world. Submillimeter is a type of microwave radiation, closest to infrared in the light spectrum; the telescope is to be outfitted with a wide-field camera, expected to map the sky 1000 times faster and with better resolution than the SCUBA-2 camera installed on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii.

The CCAT consortium participating in the project includes: Cornell University. University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Cologne, University of Bonn, University of British Columbia, other universities in the U. S. and Canada. Construction was at one time projected to begin in 2015; the telescope is intended to complement the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, by discovering new sources that ALMA will follow up with detailed imagery. In January 2014 the Chilean government granted the use of land on Cerro Chajnantor to the CCAT consortium for the telescope and the road to the mountain summit. In January 2014, the Atacama Astronomy Park was inaugurated by the Chilean government, to coordinate activities between the current and upcoming observatories in the Chajnantor region; the project has had trouble finding funding, construction of CCAT has not materialized. 1988 Liberty Bowl

The 1988 Liberty Bowl, a college football postseason bowl game, took place on December 28, 1988, at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. The competing teams in the 30th Liberty Bowl were the South Carolina Gamecocks, who competed as a I-A independent, the Indiana Hoosiers of the Big Ten Conference. In what was the first meeting between the schools, Indiana was victorious in by a final score of 34–10; the 1988 South Carolina squad finished the regular season with losses at Georgia Tech and Clemson and at home to Florida State en route to an overall record of eight wins and three losses. After their loss to Clemson in the regular season finale on November 19, the Gamecocks publicly accepted an invitation to play in the Liberty Bowl; the appearance marked the first for South Carolina in the Liberty Bowl, their eighth overall bowl game. The 1988 Indiana squad finished the regular season with a tie at Missouri and losses against Michigan and Michigan State en route to an overall record of seven wins, three losses and one tie.

In mid-November, the Hoosiers accepted an invitation to play in the Liberty Bowl. Their appearance marked the first for Indiana in the Liberty Bowl, their fifth overall bowl game; the 1988 edition of the Liberty Bowl, marked the 30th edition and the kickoff occurred in sub-freezing conditions. The Hoosiers scored early in the game when Anthony Thompson gave Indiana a 7–0 lead with his nine-yard touchdown run, they extended their lead further to 17–0 at halftime after a ten-yard Dave Schnell touchdown pass to Calvert Miller and a 28-yard Pete Stoyanovich field goal in the second quarter. The Gamecocks scored their only touchdown early in the third quarter when Antonio Walker blocked a Macky Smith punt, recovered and returned 34-yards by Mike Tolbert for the score; each team traded field goals, Stoyanovich from 19-yards for Indiana and Collin Mackie from 44-yards for Carolina that made the score 20–10 at the end of the third quarter. The Hoosiers closed the game with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and won 34–10.

Points were scored on an 88-yard, Rob Turner touchdown reception from Dave Schnell and an eight-yard Thompson run. Dave Schnell was named the MVP of the game as he completed 16 of 31 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns
