Limon lies at the intersection of Interstate 70, U.S. Highways 24, 40, 287, and Colorado Highway 71. The Limon Correctional Facility is part of the Colorado Department of Corrections system and is a major employer in the area with employment of roughly 350.

The county obtains its name in memory of the United States President Abraham Lincoln. County was formed from portions of Bent and Elbert counties in 1889 from a restructuring of Colorado counties.
