The Washington Nationals farm system consists of seven Minor League Baseball affiliates across the United States and in the Dominican Republic.[1] Five teams are independently owned, while two—the Gulf Coast League Nationals and Dominican Summer League Nationals—are owned by the major league club.

The Expos-Nationals franchise has been affiliated with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League since 1991, making it the longest-running active affiliation in the organization among teams not owned by the Nationals.[2] Their newest affiliate is the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League, which will become the Nationals' Triple-A club in 2019.[2] The longest continuous affiliation in Montreal-Washington franchise history was the 29-year relationship with the Class A-Advanced Florida State League's West Palm Beach Expos from 1969 to 1997.[2]

Geographically, Washington's closest domestic affiliate is the Potomac Nationals of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League which is approximately 23 miles (37 km) away. Washington's furthest domestic affiliate is the Gulf Coast League Nationals of the Rookie League Gulf Coast League some 856 miles (1,378 km) away.

The current structure of Minor League Baseball has been in effect since the 1990 season when the Class A level was subdivided for a second time with the creation of Class A-Advanced. The Rookie level consists of domestic and foreign circuits.[3]
