According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a museum is "a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment."[1] Museums play an essential role in the protection and transmission of the world's cultural and natural heritage, and are powerful drivers of sustainable tourism.[2][3][4]

Institutions whose most recently reported attendance exceeds two million visitors per year are listed here if they meet the ICOM definition and are widely identified as museums in secondary sources, including relevant government agencies or industry associations, the list also follows the recommendations of the ISO 18461 standard on defining a museum for the purposes of statistical collection and reporting. Thus natural, archaeological and ethnographic monuments and sites and historical monuments and sites of a museum nature are included, if they maintain a collection similar to museums. Conservation institutes and exhibition galleries in libraries and archives centres are also included if they conform to the ICOM definition of a museum. Zoos, aquaria, arboreta and botanical gardens are not listed.[5] Sources used to compile the list include the Museum Index published by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and the economics practice at AECOM; the annual Art Newspaper Review feature on art museum visitor figures; the European Group on Museum Statistics (EGMUS); and the annual survey of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) in the United Kingdom, among others.
