Ontario

Ontario, one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada, is located in east-central Canada. It is Canadas most populous province by a margin, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Canadians. Ontario is fourth-largest in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and it is home to the nations capital city, Ottawa, and the nations most populous city, Toronto. There is only about 1 km of land made up of portages including Height of Land Portage on the Minnesota border. Ontario is sometimes divided into two regions, Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The great majority of Ontarios population and arable land is located in the south, in contrast, the larger, northern part of Ontario is sparsely populated with cold winters and is heavily forested. The province is named after Lake Ontario, a thought to be derived from Ontarí, io, a Huron word meaning great lake, or possibly skanadario. Ontario has about 250,000 freshwater lakes, the province consists of three main geographical regions, The thinly populated Canadian Shield in the northwestern and central portions, which comprises over half the land area of Ontario. Although this area mostly does not support agriculture, it is rich in minerals and in part covered by the Central and Midwestern Canadian Shield forests, studded with lakes, Northern Ontario is subdivided into two sub-regions, Northwestern Ontario and Northeastern Ontario. The virtually unpopulated Hudson Bay Lowlands in the north and northeast, mainly swampy. Southern Ontario which is further sub-divided into four regions, Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, Golden Horseshoe, the highest point is Ishpatina Ridge at 693 metres above sea level located in Temagami, Northeastern Ontario. In the south, elevations of over 500 m are surpassed near Collingwood, above the Blue Mountains in the Dundalk Highlands, the Carolinian forest zone covers most of the southwestern region of the province. A well-known geographic feature is Niagara Falls, part of the Niagara Escarpment, the Saint Lawrence Seaway allows navigation to and from the Atlantic Ocean as far inland as Thunder Bay in Northwestern Ontario. Northern Ontario occupies roughly 87 percent of the area of the province. Point Pelee is a peninsula of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario that is the southernmost extent of Canadas mainland, Pelee Island and Middle Island in Lake Erie extend slightly farther. All are south of 42°N – slightly farther south than the border of California. The climate of Ontario varies by season and location, the effects of these major air masses on temperature and precipitation depend mainly on latitude, proximity to major bodies of water and to a small extent, terrain relief. Barrhaven

Barrhaven is a rapidly growing suburban neighbourhood in the southwest of the urban area of the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, about 17 km southwest of downtown Ottawa. Prior to amalgamation with Ottawa in 2001, Barrhaven was part of the City of Nepean and its population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 72,324. The area is bisected by CN rail tracks. Barrhaven is surrounded by areas and farmland, with the exception of the growing Riverside South area across the Rideau River. Directly south of Barrhaven is Manotick, a town of the city. Barrhaven is divided several areas, Barrhaven proper or Old Barrhaven is the westernmost part of the neighbourhood. New residential development is expanding the west side of Old Barrhaven between Cedarview and Strandherd Drive, also included in this area is a triangle of land east of Greenbank between Fallowfield Road and the railway tracks known as Knollsbrook or The Triangle. South of this is the known as Longfields, which stretches south to Strandherd. Sandwiched between the tracks, Jockvale Road, Greenbank and Strandherd is the neighbourhood of Barrhaven on the Green. East of Woodroffe, next to the Rideau River, is the neighbourhood of Davidson Heights, South of Strandherd and east of Greenbank is a new community known as Chapman Mills. As Prince of Wales Drive approaches Jockvale, there is a community known as Stonebridge that is located beside the Stonebridge Golf & Country Club. The Barrhaven area was inhabited by First Nations peoples. In the 19th century the area populated by European farmers as the area was divided into a number of rural homesteads. The old Barrhaven School House located at Jockvale and Strandherd was in built in 1906, today, the school stands as a historic site. In 1911, the Canadian Northern Railway built a line from Ottawa to Toronto through the area. Modern Barrhaven was established in the 1960s, one of a group of new suburbs built outside the Greenbelt from the city of Ottawa. Building in the area was begun by Mel Barr, for whom the community is named, Barr had originally purchased a 200-acre farm with the intent of constructing a horse racing track. However the Rideau Carleton Raceway was built further to the east, in 1968-69 Barrhaven Public School was built as the very first public school in Barrhaven

Ottawa

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec, the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area and the National Capital Region. The 2016 census reported a population of 934,243, making it the fourth-largest city in Canada, the City of Ottawa reported that the city had an estimated population of 960,754 as of December 2015. Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city name Ottawa was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River nearby, the name of which is derived from the Algonquin Odawa, meaning to trade. The city is the most educated in Canada, and is home to a number of post-secondary, research, and cultural institutions, including the National Arts Centre, Ottawa also has the highest standard of living in the nation and low unemployment. It ranked second out of 150 worldwide in the Numbeo quality of life index 2014–2015, with the draining of the Champlain Sea around ten thousand years ago the Ottawa Valley became habitable. The area was used for wild harvesting, hunting, fishing, trade, travel. The Ottawa river valley has archaeological sites with arrow heads, pottery, the area has three major rivers that meet, making it an important trade and travel area for thousands of years. The Algonquins called the Ottawa River Kichi Sibi or Kichissippi meaning Great River or Grand River, Étienne Brûlé, the first European to travel up the Ottawa River, passed by Ottawa in 1610 on his way to the Great Lakes. Three years later, Samuel de Champlain wrote about the waterfalls of the area and about his encounters with the Algonquins, the early explorers and traders were later followed by many missionaries. The first maps of the area used the word Ottawa to name the river, philemon Wright, a New Englander, created the first settlement in the area on 7 March 1800 on the north side of the river, across from Ottawa in Hull. He, with five other families and twenty-five labourers, set about to create a community called Wrightsville. Wright pioneered the Ottawa Valley timber trade by transporting timber by river from the Ottawa Valley to Quebec City, the following year, the town would soon be named after British military engineer Colonel John By who was responsible for the entire Rideau Waterway construction project. Colonel By set up military barracks on the site of todays Parliament Hill and he also laid out the streets of the town and created two distinct neighbourhoods named Upper Town west of the canal and Lower Town east of the canal. Similar to its Upper Canada and Lower Canada namesakes, historically Upper Town was predominantly English speaking and Protestant whereas Lower Town was predominantly French, Irish, bytowns population grew to 1,000 as the Rideau Canal was being completed in 1832. In 1855 Bytown was renamed Ottawa and incorporated as a city, William Pittman Lett was installed as the first city clerk guiding it through 36 years of development. On New Years Eve 1857, Queen Victoria, as a symbolic, in reality, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald had assigned this selection process to the Executive Branch of the Government, as previous attempts to arrive at a consensus had ended in deadlock

Bank Street (Ottawa)

Bank Street is the major north-south road in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Bank Street made up much of Ontario Highway 31 before it was downloaded in 1998, currently it is also known as Ottawa Road #31. In 2011, the city officially unveiled signs identifying the neighbourhood as Ottawas gay village, at the intersections of Somerset, James, travelling south, there exists a shopping district in The Glebe running exclusively along Bank Street from approximately the Queensway to Holmwood Avenue. Bank Street is home to Lansdowne Park where the Ottawa 67s, even further south, after the road passes over the Rideau Canal on the Bank Street Bridge, Bank Street is home to the Billings Bridge Plaza and eventually, the South Keys Shopping Centre. South of Leitrim it is a rural highway with an 80 km/h speed limit until the community of Vernon. Bank Street also serves in some contexts as a division between eastern and western Ottawa. Contrary to popular belief, the street is not named after the Bank of Canada headquarters at the corner of Bank Street, the street name dates back to the 19th century, whereas the bank was founded in 1934. Its believed that the road was named this because it went from the bank of the Ottawa River at its northern end to that of the Rideau River to the south. However, the road was originally called Esther Street in honour of Colonel Bys wife, Highway 31 was formed in 1927, and started at the junction of Highway 2 in Morrisburg, Ontario. It traveled north through the town of Winchester, and eventually into Ottawa, the road was paved in stages, but was fully paved by 1936. The roads designation of Highway 31 was extended from the Dundas-Stormont-Glengary/Russell-Prescott county line into Ottawa later that same year, while maintaining its alignment along Bank Street for its entire history, the road was re-aligned along Canal Drive. This is presumed to be a link between Highway 31 and The Queensway, but these scenic routes/connecting links were all decommissioned by 1960. Portions of Bank Street have undergone major reconstruction each year since 2006, the City of Ottawa held public consultations for a major redevelopment of Bank Street between Wellington Street and the Rideau Canal. com

Bronson Avenue (Ottawa)

Bronson Avenue is a major north-south arterial road in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It starts as a continuation of the Airport Parkway, which is an expressway to the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport and it continues past Carleton University, the Glebe, north through Centretown, and ends downtown at Sparks Street. Starting as an expressway leading from the Airport Parkway, Bronson quickly becomes a six lane divided arterial with little or no direct frontage. From Colonel By Drive, Bronson Avenue continues as a four-lane undivided principal arterial road through residential and commercial areas with a limit of 50 km/h. Elgin Street (Ottawa)

Elgin Street is a street in the Downtown core of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Originally named Biddys Lane, it was named after Lord Elgin. The north/south running street begins at Wellington Street in Confederation Square, just east of the Parliament buildings, in the centre of Elgin Street for the first two blocks is Confederation Square, home of Canadas National War Memorial. To the south of this on the east of Elgin is the National Arts Centre, continuing south, Elgin is fronted by Confederation Park to the east and the Lord Elgin Hotel to the west. South of the park, just past Laurier Avenue, is the Ottawa Court House, across from the First Baptist Church and Grant house, followed by City Hall and Knox Presbyterian Church. South of this, the street becomes mainly an area, home to a number of stores, restaurants. Progressing south, the street becomes more residential, home to low rise apartment buildings. Elgin ends at the Queensway, where it turns into Hawthorne Avenue before turning east, at the southern end of Elgin is the headquarters of the Ottawa Police Service. The street is now nicknamed Sens Mile, similar to the Red Mile in Calgary, the plan originated as a grassroots campaign upon realization that the home of the Ottawa Senators, Canadian Tire Centre is located 30 minutes west of the citys downtown core in the suburb of Kanata. In June 2010 a life size statue of the Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson was unveiled at the corner of Elgin. As of November 2011, the former National Art Gallery at 90 Elgin is being torn down to be replaced with a new 17 storey office building that house the Federal Finance Department. Carling Avenue

Carling Avenue is a major east–west arterial road in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It runs from March Road in Kanata to Bronson Avenue in the Glebe, the road is named for John Carling, founder of Carling Brewery and Conservative MP and Senator, Postmaster General and Minister of Agriculture. It begins north of Kanata and runs east until the Ottawa River where it bends south to go around Crystal Bay, at this point it runs in a straight direction towards the city core and ends at the fringes of the Glebe neighbourhood. It used to run all the way to OConnor Street, one block east of Bank Street and it is a four to six-lane principal arterial road for most of its urban length, with a speed limit of 60 km/h. The portion through the Greenbelt and into Kanata is generally a rural highway. In December 2005 one lane in each direction between Booth Street and Cambridge South just before Bronson was converted to a bus-only lane and this very short bus-only section speeds up bus traffic through the Carling/Bronson intersection during rush-hour. It also runs along the boundaries of the Central Experimental Farm. Carling is now known as Ottawa Road #38 but used to be Highway 17B east of Richmond Road until the Ontario government downloaded the highway to the local government, until the 1970s, the western part of Carling was also part of Highway 17. In every year from 2004 to 2007, Carling Avenue has been named one of Ontarios worst 20 roads in a CAA survey, citing frequent bumps, construction is underway through certain portions of it. There is a Carling Station, presently servicing the O-Train Trillium Line, the addresses change erratically on Carling, they are not consistent from point to point and rise rapidly in the eastern part, then slow down to a very slow rise west of Bayshore. Airport Parkway (Ottawa)

Airport Parkway is an expressway in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It runs from the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport to an interchange with Heron Road where it turns into Bronson Avenue, Airport Parkway is a two-lane expressway for most of its length, and is home to one of Ontarios only two single-point urban interchanges at its Hunt Club Road exit. The speed limit is 80 km/h for its entire length, until 1997, Airport Parkway was maintained by the federal government of Canada under the jurisdiction of the National Capital Commission. The road has had 300 collisions and three fatalities since 2000, making it the focus of future improvements, there has been some discussing in twinning it to a four-lane expressway or freeway, although those discussions have stalled due to local controversy. Albert Street (Ottawa)

Albert Street is one of the main east-west roads in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Albert is one way going west and it carries the westbound portion of the transitway through downtown, with Slater Street just to the south carrying the eastbound portion. Previously, it was planned that O-Train would have extended to downtown running westbound along Albert. Albert Street begins at Elgin Street, where traffic coming off the Mackenzie King Bridge is divided between Albert and Slater and this is just east of Confederation Park and the National Arts Centre. In downtown Albert is lined mainly by government office towers and other such as Constitution Square. This area is home to the former Ottawa Technical High School. At Bronson Avenue Albert turns to the south, as it plunges down Nanny Goat Hill, the Transitway separates from Albert and Slater Street merges into it at the bottom of this hill

Baseline Road (Ottawa)

Baseline Road is a road in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Baseline runs from Richmond Road east in a straight line until it ends at the Heron Road Bridge over the Rideau River, before the 2001 City of Ottawa amalgamation, Baseline formed the border of the city of Ottawa and Nepean. The street is named for its location as the baseline for Nepean Township, when Nepean Township was surveyed, Baseline formed the northern boundary of Nepeans six north–south concessions. Currently, Baseline is a major east–west street, and in the late 90s it became so busy that Hunt Club Road had to be extended west of the Rideau River to alleviate pressure. Points of interest on Baseline include the Queensway Carleton Hospital, the Boy Scouts Museum, Algonquin College, Baseline Road is a four-lane principal arterial road for its entire length, except between Centrepointe Drive and Navaho Drive, where it is a five-lane/six-lane arterial. The speed limit is 60 km/h for most of its length except a short section west of Greenbank Road, ramsayville Road in southeast Ottawa used to be called Base Line Road before 2003. The name had to be changed when the city of Gloucester amalgamated with the city of Ottawa. In the future, Baseline Road will have bus lanes between Navaho Drive and Prince of Wales Drive to speed up service in this stretch due to constant heavy traffic

Booth Street

Booth Street is a major street just to the west of downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. North of Albert Street, Booth Street is designated as a city road which proceeds to the Chaudière Bridge. Once in Gatineau, it becomes Rue Eddy and this northernmost part of the street proceeds through the Lebreton Flats past the Canadian War Museum and the under construction National Holocaust Monument. South of Albert Street Booth is classified as a collector road which enters residential areas. This region has traditionally been home to many of Ottawas immigrants, like Preston Street to the west there is a significant Italian presence, but there are also many other groups such as Chinese and south-east Asians. Booth runs south through Centretown and through an underpass under the Queensway, the road ends at Carling Avenue, just to the north of Dows Lake.
