Knox County Infirmary

The Knox County Infirmary is was former Infirmary and poorhouse in Knox County, Ohio for those with mental disorders, the poor, children. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In June 1842, the county acquired 132 acres of land from William Davidson along the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon & Columbus Railroad and expanded upon the existing structures for the first county infirmary and poorhouse. A larger structure was soon needed and Tinsley & Company of Columbus was hired to furnish plans for a new building. A contract for construction was awarded to the J. Henegan & Company on September 30, 1874 and the new Italianate-styled infirmary was opened in September 1877, it featured a central 65-foot-high tower that contained three water tanks. Substandard conditions forced the Knox County Infirmary to close in 1957; the building was purchased by Foursquare Gospel Church and was used as the Mt. Vernon Bible College until 1988, when it relocated to Virginia; the building, abandoned for several years, was reopened as The House of Nightmares in 1997.

It became one of the state's largest haunted houses and was in use until January 2006 when four floors of the building collapsed. Toby Spade purchased the former infirmary from the state of Ohio with the intent of rehabilitating the building but the front north facade gave way in February 2015. A fire consumed the entire structure on June 26. Knox County Infirmary at Abandoned

Potez 506

The Potez 506 was a version of the Potez 501 French single engine observation aircraft, specially modified to capture the World absolute altitude record. In September 1933 it set a new record at 13,661 m; the Potez 506 was a modification of the Potez 501 observation/bomber aircraft, itself derived via the Potez 50 from the used Potez 25, first flown in 1926. In 1932 Cyril Uwins set a world altitude record of 13,404 m in a Vickers Vespa VII, which the Potez 506 was designed to better. Flown by Gustave Lemoine, it reached 13,661 m on 28 September 1933, an altitude limited by icing of the pilot's eyes as he sat in his open cockpit, he had no pressure suit. The flight, made from Villacoublay, lasted 2 hrs 5min; the record breaking airframe began as a Potez 501, the Potez 50 with its inline, water-cooled 520 kW Lorraine 12Fd Courlis replaced by a 520 kW Gnome-Rhone 14Kbrs Mistral Major radial engine. The Potez 506 had a similar 14-cylinder. Two row radial engine, the Gnome-Rhone 14Kdrs Mistral Major, which had its power increased to 600 kW at sea level by an increase in compression ratio from 5.5 to 7.25 and an improved supercharger which could maintain this output to 6,000 m.

It drove a three blade propeller. In addition, the upper wing span was increased by 26 % to its area by a little more. 100 kg of empty weight savings were made. The pilot sat in the rear cockpit, rather than from his usual forward position, covered over and used to house the barographs and batteries. Like all of the Potez 25 derived aircraft, the 506 had an all wood structure with fabric covering apart from around the engine and was a single bay sesquiplane with shorter, narrower chord lower wings and outward leaning interplane struts. Lemoine reached 14,400 m in the 506. On 11 April 1934 the Italian Renato Donati raised the altitude record to 14,433 m in a much modified Caproni Ca.113 aircraft, wearing a pressure suit. Both pilots considered further records attempts and Dorati experimented with pressure suits. On 14 August 1936 Détré flew the 506 to 14,843 m; the same aircraft was flown by Maryse Hilsz to set a new women's worlds altitude record of 14,310 m on 7 July 1937 which still stood in 1948.

The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend

The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend is a fantasy novel by British author David Gemmell, first published in 1993. The novel is a prequel to the popular title Legend; the novel details the early life and events of the character Druss, it is followed by The Legend of Deathwalker, which deals with events in his life between this book and the events in "Legend". The story begins in Druss's village in the Drenai Empire, he is a misfit and awkward. While he is away from the village chopping wood, a party of slavers, led by Harib Ka and the master swordsman Collan, comes to the village and kills or enslaves everyone they find. With his dying breath, Druss' father tells him to fetch the family battle-axe, stolen by his grandfather Bardan. Druss meets the hunter Shadak, hunting the slavers to avenge the death of his son, they join forces to pursue them. Shadak succeeds in interrogating Harib Ka before Druss kills him, learns that Rowena has been taken to the port of Mashrapur. Druss meets Shadak's friend Sieben.

Together they find out. Druss is ambushed by Collan's men on the dock. Druss is badly wounded but survives, Shadak reappears to kill Collan. However, they fail to stop the ship from setting sail without them; when Druss recovers, he and Sieben join a group of mercenaries recruited by the Ventrian soldier Bodasen, going to support the emperor Gorben in a war in Ventria against the neighbouring Naashanites and rebels. En route, they are attacked by pirates; the soldiers succeed in rescuing Gorben from a siege. Gorben is impressed with Druss and promotes him to serve in his elite bodyguard- "The Immortals". Sieben learns from a priest that Snaga is harbouring an evil spirit, but fails to persuade Druss to abandon the weapon. Meanwhile, Rowena has married the leading general of the Naashanites, he becomes concerned when she falls ill. He is told that she is suffering as a result of her mystical powers, has these removed, along with her memory, in order to save her life. During a break in the war, Druss loses Snaga in a river.

Thinking he is free of it, he learns from the a wandering Source priest that it has been found by a brutal warlord, Cajivak. He and the mercenary Varsava set out to recover the axe and kill Cajivak, but Druss is captured and imprisoned in Cajivak's dungeon. At first he wastes away, but with the help of a former prisoner succeeds in regaining his strength and escaping, only to find that Sieben and the archer Eskodas have mounted a rescue attempt. Druss kills Cajivak and recovers Snaga returns to the army. By this point in the war the Naashanites are desperate and attempt to use a demon to assassinate Gorben, but he is saved by Druss thanks to Snaga- the only weapon that seems to hurt the demon. Druss learns that Rowena has married Michanek and that her memory has been erased, he vows to kill Michanek and reclaim Rowena as his own as the army moves to besiege the last Naashanite stronghold, where Michanek has his home. Michanek has learned of Rowena's past and attempts to reconcile her to the idea of going back to Druss, but she will not have it.

During the siege, Michanek is killed and Rowena takes poison since she cannot face life alone. Druss is forced to venture into the netherworld to bring her back. Druss succeeds in finding Rowena, despite a trick of Snaga's, rescues her. In the process he banishes the demon from the axe, he and his companions return to Drenai. The epilogue deals with a famous battle late in Druss's career. Gorben has gone mad and invades Drenai, Druss and Sieben go to Skeln Pass to meet the troops and raise morale; the Ventrians launch a surprise attack, catching the Drenai unprepared, Druss and Sieben are caught up in the fighting. Under the leadership of Earl Delnar, with Druss' inspirational presence, the Drenai manage to hold up the Ventrian advance. In a night raid, Druss accidentally kills his old friend Bodasen; the next day, a furious Gorben commits the Immortals, to battle. In the fierce fighting that ensues, Sieben is mortally wounded, but Druss and the Drenai manage to hold the Immortals long enough for reinforcements to arrive and win the war.

In the rout, Gorben is killed by his own officers. During the battle, who has stayed at home with Sieben's wife Niobe, dies, she tells Niobe that she knew she was dying but sent Druss to Skeln Pass so that he would not have to witness it, as it would break his heart.
