Perry South (Pittsburgh)
Perry South is a neighborhood on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's North Side. The neighborhood takes its name from Perrysville Avenue, which "was a part of the Venango trail, an Indian path leading north of'Allegheny Town'. Commodore Perry used the Trail to carry supplies from Pittsburgh to Erie for his lake battle against the British during the War of 1812." Perrysville Avenue is an extension of Federal Street, the main north-south thoroughfare of old Allegheny City. Federal Street ends, Perrysville Avenue begins, where the flat river plain gives way to a steep hill. Perry South is thus a hilltop neighborhood that runs along Perrysville Avenue from the river plain to Riverview Park; the hill on which the neighborhood is built provides natural borders to the west, to the east, to the south. The neighborhood was developed as a streetcar suburb, so it consists exclusively of residential housing, with a small business district at the intersection of Perrysville Avenue and Charles Avenue, it experienced white flight after 1960: from 1960 to 1970, the neighborhood's total population declined from 16,000 people to 13,000, while its African-American population, located exclusively in the Charles Street valley, increased from 15% to 20%.
From 1970 to 2000, the total population decreased to just 5,200 people, of whom 65% were African-American. Current residents have formed the Perry South Citizens Council in an effort to prevent decay and to improve the neighborhood's business district; the southwestern corner of the neighborhood was once called Pleasant Valley, a small area, once considered to be a neighborhood in its own right. A 1977 report about Pleasant Valley states that "Pleasant Valley was known as Snyder's Hollow and its stream was a favorite ice skating spot; the neighborhood was settled by Germans, Irish and Poles. Josh Gibson, Hall of Fame catcher for the Homestead Grays, a Negro National League team of the 1920s, lived there." Pleasant Valley consists of rowhouses which were built by the owners of the Pleasant Valley Street Railway - which operated the streetcars that first allowed Perry South to be developed. A series of these rowhouses, on Brightridge Street, have been listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

Manchester is a neighborhood on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's North Side. It has a ZIP code of 15233, has representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 6; the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire houses Battalion 1 in Manchester. The neighborhood includes the Manchester Historic District, which protects, to some degree, 609 buildings over a 51.6-acre area. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975; the Manchester Historic District is Pittsburgh's largest historic district under the National Register of Historic Places, preserved for its early 19th century-built Late Victorian-style houses. Manchester was rated as one of the top 10 neighborhoods for "being close to everything" because it's walkable and has easy access to public transportation and major roadways; the Three Rivers Heritage Trail System runs along Manchester. Manchester is exclusively residential; as of the 2010 Census, there were 2,130 people residing in Manchester. According to a report created by the University Center for Social and Urban Research, 46.3% of houses were families while 55.7% were nonfamily households.

Brunot Island is a 129-acre island in the Ohio River. It is part of the Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in the United States, it was named for Dr. Felix Brunot; the family entertained the Lewis and Clark expedition on the island in August 1803. The island is home to the Brunot Island Generating Station, a 315 MW fossil fuel power plant; the Ohio Connecting Railroad Bridge crosses the Ohio River at the island. The island does not otherwise connect to the land, all vehicular traffic must use a ferry to access the island; the employees of the power plant use a pedestrian walkway on the railroad bridge to go to work. Bakery Square is an open-air shopping and office development in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Larimer, adjacent to the neighborhoods of Shadyside and East Liberty in the city's East End. Bakery Square is located on 5.1 acres along Penn Avenue. The main Bakery Square building was built as a Nabisco factory in 1918 and operated until 1998. Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwest Pennsylvania bought the building in 1999 and leased it to the Atlantic Baking Company, subsequently merged with Bake-Line Group and went bankrupt in 2004. In 2006, the City of Pittsburgh declared the building blighted, paving the way for a redevelopment plan by Walnut Capital in 2007; the building opened after remodeling in May 2010. In June 2014, President Barack Obama visited TechShop, a workshop and prototyping studio, in Bakery Square. Bakery Square has 216,080 square feet of office space. More than half the space is leased by Google. A piece of the Nabisco factory's original equipment, a large dough mixer, was left standing in homage to the site's industrial roots. As of January 2011, Google was leasing 115,000 square feet of office space in the complex, though not all of it was yet developed and filled with employees. Bakery square has 136,460 square feet of retail space. Tenants include SpringHill Suites by Marriott, TechShop, Free People, Coffee Tree Roasters, Jimmy Johns, Ragged Row, L. A. Fitness. Walnut Capital worked with Urban Redevelopment Authority of the City of Pittsburgh to purchase and subsequently demolish the former Reizenstein school. Construction began on a project named "Bakery Square 2.0," this new development will create a combination of new office space and residential development. With completion in early June 2014, the first of the two apartment buildings at the site opened to tenants; the project, designed by Strada Architecture LLC. is LEED Certified, with bio-retention on site, green roofs, porous paving, bioswales.

North Side (Pittsburgh)
North Side refers to the region of Pittsburgh, located to the north of the Allegheny River and the Ohio River. The term "North Side" does not refer to a specific neighborhood, but rather to a disparate collection of contiguous neighborhoods; the neighborhoods that make up the North Side of Pittsburgh include: Allegheny Center, Allegheny West, Brighton Heights, California-Kirkbride, Central Northside, East Allegheny, Manchester, Marshall-Shadeland, North Shore, Northview Heights, Perry North, Perry South, Spring Garden, Spring Hill–City View, Summer Hill, Troy Hill. The North Side has seven hills. In 1828, the borough of Allegheny, was incorporated where the North Side now stands, it had a population of 1,000. In 1880, Allegheny was incorporated as a city; the City of Allegheny was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907, became known as the North Side. Historians claim that the Felix Brunot mansion on Stockton Avenue was once a station on the Underground Railroad, where fugitive slaves from the South stopped for food and shelter.
The Allegheny regional branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, located at 5 Allegheny Square, was the first tax-supported library in the United States. It is now closed to the public following a lightning strike on April 6, 2007. A new library opened nearby at 1230 Federal Street. Charles Taze Russell organized what are now known as Jehovah's Witnesses at a house in the old city of Allegheny. Mary Cassatt was born on Rebecca Street in 1844. Today, Rebecca Street has become Reedsdale Street. If the house had not been torn down for Highway Route 65, it would be facing Heinz Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. lived at 1318 Arch Street when he created the original Ferris Wheel for the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in an attempt to create something as impressive as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The first World Series was played at Exposition Park by the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans in 1903. Gus & Yia-Yia's Iceball Stand, selling fresh popcorn and old-fashioned iceballs hand-scraped from a block of ice, has been in West Park since 1934.
The "orange concession stand with a brightly colored umbrella" is something of an unofficial Pittsburgh landmark during the summer months. Central Northside (Pittsburgh)
Central Northside is a neighborhood in the North Side of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. It has a zip code of 15212, has representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 6. Known as "The Buena Vista Tract", it is densely filled with restored row houses, community gardens and tree lined streets and alleyways. In the late 19th century, Pennsylvania became known for its stately homes, occupied by some of the area's wealthy families. One such area became known as the Mexican War Streets; the Mexican War Streets were laid out in 1847, during the Mexican–American War, by William Robinson Jr. ex-mayor of the city of Allegheny. Robinson, who contrary to some tellings did not serve in the war, subdivided his land and named the new streets after the war's battles and generals. Central Northside has seven city neighborhood borders with Perry South to the north, Fineview to the northeast, East Allegheny to the southeast, Allegheny Center to the south, Allegheny West to the southwest, Manchester to the west and California-Kirkbride to the northwest.
The 1979 sports/cult classic The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh used the neighborhoods southern border of North Avenue's gritty former "burlesque row" adjacent to the Garden Theater to depict Stockard Channing's gypsy fortune teller characters office and residence. Thirty years in 2010, the Katherine Heigl film One for the Money uses the same exact buildings complete with Garden Theater marquee to once again depict a gritty inner city environment—though much of the characters and vice of the North Avenue corridor has been corrected, the structures still adapt well on the areas southern border. On 10 September 2012, the Central Northside Neighborhood Council voted to change the neighborhood's name to Allegheny City Central. However, according to an FAQ published by the CNNC in August 2012, the Council reported that official city maps would "probably not" reflect the name change and that the city planning department is "always reluctant" to alter established names; the same document refers to the name change as a "branding initiative", part of a "new brand and marketing strategy".
