Mathematics includes the study of such topics as quantity, structure and change. Mathematicians use patterns to formulate new conjectures; when mathematical structures are good models of real phenomena mathematical reasoning can provide insight or predictions about nature. Through the use of abstraction and logic, mathematics developed from counting, calculation and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human activity from as far back; the research required to solve mathematical problems can take years or centuries of sustained inquiry. Rigorous arguments first appeared in Greek mathematics, most notably in Euclid's Elements. Since the pioneering work of Giuseppe Peano, David Hilbert, others on axiomatic systems in the late 19th century, it has become customary to view mathematical research as establishing truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. Mathematics developed at a slow pace until the Renaissance, when mathematical innovations interacting with new scientific discoveries led to a rapid increase in the rate of mathematical discovery that has continued to the present day.
Mathematics is essential in many fields, including natural science, medicine and the social sciences. Applied mathematics has led to new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory. Mathematicians engage in pure mathematics without having any application in mind, but practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are discovered later; the history of mathematics can be seen as an ever-increasing series of abstractions. The first abstraction, shared by many animals, was that of numbers: the realization that a collection of two apples and a collection of two oranges have something in common, namely quantity of their members; as evidenced by tallies found on bone, in addition to recognizing how to count physical objects, prehistoric peoples may have recognized how to count abstract quantities, like time – days, years. Evidence for more complex mathematics does not appear until around 3000 BC, when the Babylonians and Egyptians began using arithmetic and geometry for taxation and other financial calculations, for building and construction, for astronomy.
The most ancient mathematical texts from Mesopotamia and Egypt are from 2000–1800 BC. Many early texts mention Pythagorean triples and so, by inference, the Pythagorean theorem seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry, it is in Babylonian mathematics that elementary arithmetic first appear in the archaeological record. The Babylonians possessed a place-value system, used a sexagesimal numeral system, still in use today for measuring angles and time. Beginning in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans, the Ancient Greeks began a systematic study of mathematics as a subject in its own right with Greek mathematics. Around 300 BC, Euclid introduced the axiomatic method still used in mathematics today, consisting of definition, axiom and proof, his textbook Elements is considered the most successful and influential textbook of all time. The greatest mathematician of antiquity is held to be Archimedes of Syracuse, he developed formulas for calculating the surface area and volume of solids of revolution and used the method of exhaustion to calculate the area under the arc of a parabola with the summation of an infinite series, in a manner not too dissimilar from modern calculus.
Other notable achievements of Greek mathematics are conic sections, trigonometry (Hipparchus of Nicaea, the beginnings of algebra. The Hindu–Arabic numeral system and the rules for the use of its operations, in use throughout the world today, evolved over the course of the first millennium AD in India and were transmitted to the Western world via Islamic mathematics. Other notable developments of Indian mathematics include the modern definition of sine and cosine, an early form of infinite series. During the Golden Age of Islam during the 9th and 10th centuries, mathematics saw many important innovations building on Greek mathematics; the most notable achievement of Islamic mathematics was the development of algebra. Other notable achievements of the Islamic period are advances in spherical trigonometry and the addition of the decimal point to the Arabic numeral system. Many notable mathematicians from this period were Persian, such as Al-Khwarismi, Omar Khayyam and Sharaf al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī. During the early modern period, mathematics began to develop at an accelerating pace in Western Europe.
The development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz in the 17th century revolutionized mathematics. Leonhard Euler was the most notable mathematician of the 18th century, contributing numerous theorems and discoveries; the foremost mathematician of the 19th century was the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who made numerous contributions to fields such as algebra, differential geometry, matrix theory, number theory, statistics. In the early 20th century, Kurt Gödel transformed mathematics by publishing his incompleteness theorems, which show that any axiomatic system, consistent will contain unprovable propositions. Algebraic varieties are the central objects of study in algebraic geometry. Classically, an algebraic variety is defined as the set of solutions of a system of polynomial equations over the real or complex numbers. Modern definitions generalize this concept in several different ways, while attempting to preserve the geometric intuition behind the original definition.:58Conventions regarding the definition of an algebraic variety differ slightly. For example, some definitions require an algebraic variety to be irreducible, which means that it is not the union of two smaller sets that are closed in the Zariski topology. Under this definition, non-irreducible algebraic varieties are called algebraic sets. Other conventions do not require irreducibility; the concept of an algebraic variety is similar to that of an analytic manifold. An important difference is that an algebraic variety may have singular points, while a manifold cannot; the fundamental theorem of algebra establishes a link between algebra and geometry by showing that a monic polynomial in one variable with complex number coefficients is determined by the set of its roots in the complex plane.
Generalizing this result, Hilbert's Nullstellensatz provides a fundamental correspondence between ideals of polynomial rings and algebraic sets. Using the Nullstellensatz and related results, mathematicians have established a strong correspondence between questions on algebraic sets and questions of ring theory; this correspondence is a defining feature of algebraic geometry. An affine variety over an algebraically closed field is conceptually the easiest type of variety to define, which will be done in this section. Next, one can define quasi-projective varieties in a similar way; the most general definition of a variety is obtained by patching together smaller quasi-projective varieties. It is not obvious that one can construct genuinely new examples of varieties in this way, but Nagata gave an example of such a new variety in the 1950s. For an algebraically closed field K and a natural number n, let An be affine n-space over K; the polynomials f in the ring K can be viewed as K-valued functions on An by evaluating f at the points in An, i.e. by choosing values in K for each xi.
For each set S of polynomials in K, define the zero-locus Z to be the set of points in An on which the functions in S vanish, to say Z =. In mathematics, a differentiable manifold is a type of manifold, locally similar enough to a linear space to allow one to do calculus. Any manifold can be described by a collection of charts known as an atlas. One may apply ideas from calculus while working within the individual charts, since each chart lies within a linear space to which the usual rules of calculus apply. If the charts are suitably compatible computations done in one chart are valid in any other differentiable chart. In formal terms, a differentiable manifold is a topological manifold with a globally defined differential structure. Any topological manifold can be given a differential structure locally by using the homeomorphisms in its atlas and the standard differential structure on a linear space. To induce a global differential structure on the local coordinate systems induced by the homeomorphisms, their composition on chart intersections in the atlas must be differentiable functions on the corresponding linear space. In other words, where the domains of charts overlap, the coordinates defined by each chart are required to be differentiable with respect to the coordinates defined by every chart in the atlas.
The maps that relate the coordinates defined by the various charts to one another are called transition maps. Differentiability means different things in different contexts including: continuously differentiable, k times differentiable and holomorphic. Furthermore, the ability to induce such a differential structure on an abstract space allows one to extend the definition of differentiability to spaces without global coordinate systems. A differential structure allows one to define the globally differentiable tangent space, differentiable functions, differentiable tensor and vector fields. Differentiable manifolds are important in physics. Special kinds of differentiable manifolds form the basis for physical theories such as classical mechanics, general relativity, Yang–Mills theory, it is possible to develop a calculus for differentiable manifolds. This leads to such mathematical machinery as the exterior calculus; the study of calculus on differentiable manifolds is known as differential geometry.
The emergence of differential geometry as a distinct discipline is credited to Carl Friedrich Gauss and Bernhard Riemann. Riemann first described manifolds in his famous habilitation lecture before the faculty at Göttingen, he motivated the idea of a manifold by an intuitive process of varying a given object in a new direction, presciently described the role of coordinate systems and charts in subsequent formal developments: Having constructed the notion of a manifoldness of n dimensions, found that its true character consists in the property that the determination of position in it may be reduced to n determinations of magnitude... – B. RiemannThe works of physicists such as James Clerk Maxwell, mathematicians Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro and Tullio Levi-Civita led to the development of tensor analysis and the notion of covariance, which identifies an intrinsic geometric property as one, invariant with respect to coordinate transformations; these ideas found a key application in Einstein's theory of general relativity and its underlying equivalence principle.
A modern definition of a 2-dimensional manifold was given by Hermann Weyl in his 1913 book on Riemann surfaces. The accepted general definition of a manifold in terms of an atlas is due to Hassler Whitney. A presentation of a topological manifold is a second countable Hausdorff space, locally homeomorphic to a vector space, by a collection of homeomorphisms called charts; the composition of one chart with the inverse of another chart is a function called a transition map, defines a homeomorphism of an open subset of the linear space onto another open subset of the linear space. This formalizes the notion of "patching together pieces of a space to make a manifold" – the manifold produced contains the data of how it has been patched together. However, different atlases may produce "the same" manifold. Thus, one defines a topological manifold to be a space as above with an equivalence class of atlases, where one defines equivalence of atlases below. There are a number of different types of differentiable manifolds, depending on the precise differentiability requirements on the transition functions.
Some common examples include the following: A differentiable manifold is a topological manifold equipped with an equivalence class of atlases whose transition maps are all differentiable. More a Ck-manifold is a topological manifold with an atlas whose transition maps are all k-times continuously differentiable. A smooth manifold or C∞-manifold is a differentiable manifold for which all the transition maps are smooth; that is, derivatives of all orders exist. An equivalence class of such atlases is said to be a smooth structure. An analytic manifold, or Cω-manifold is a smooth manifold with the additional condition that each transition map is analytic: the Taylor expansion is convergent and equals the function on some open ball. A complex manifold is a topological space modeled on a Euclidean space over the complex field and for which all the transition maps are holomorphic. While there is a meaningful notion of a Ck atlas, there is no distinct notion of a Ck manifold other than C0 and C∞, because for every Ck-structure with k > 0, there is a unique Ck-equivalent C∞-structure – a result of Whitney.

In mathematics, topology is concerned with the properties of space that are preserved under continuous deformations, such as stretching, twisting and bending, but not tearing or gluing. An n-dimensional topological space is a space with certain properties of connectedness and compactness; the space discrete. It can be closed. Topology developed as a field of study out of geometry and set theory, through analysis of concepts such as space and transformation; such ideas go back to Gottfried Leibniz, who in the 17th century envisioned the geometria situs and analysis situs. Leonhard Euler's Seven Bridges of Königsberg Problem and Polyhedron Formula are arguably the field's first theorems; the term topology was introduced by Johann Benedict Listing in the 19th century, although it was not until the first decades of the 20th century that the idea of a topological space was developed. By the middle of the 20th century, topology had become a major branch of mathematics. Topology, as a well-defined mathematical discipline, originates in the early part of the twentieth century, but some isolated results can be traced back several centuries.
Among these are certain questions in geometry investigated by Leonhard Euler. His 1736 paper on the Seven Bridges of Königsberg is regarded as one of the first practical applications of topology. On 14 November 1750, Euler wrote to a friend that he had realised the importance of the edges of a polyhedron; this led to his polyhedron formula, V − E + F = 2. Some authorities regard this analysis as the first theorem. Further contributions were made by Augustin-Louis Cauchy, Ludwig Schläfli, Johann Benedict Listing, Bernhard Riemann and Enrico Betti. Listing introduced the term "Topologie" in Vorstudien zur Topologie, written in his native German, in 1847, having used the word for ten years in correspondence before its first appearance in print; the English form "topology" was used in 1883 in Listing's obituary in the journal Nature to distinguish "qualitative geometry from the ordinary geometry in which quantitative relations chiefly are treated". The term "topologist" in the sense of a specialist in topology was used in 1905 in the magazine Spectator.
Their work was corrected and extended by Henri Poincaré. In 1895, he published his ground-breaking paper on Analysis Situs, which introduced the concepts now known as homotopy and homology, which are now considered part of algebraic topology. Unifying the work on function spaces of Georg Cantor, Vito Volterra, Cesare Arzelà, Jacques Hadamard, Giulio Ascoli and others, Maurice Fréchet introduced the metric space in 1906. A metric space is now considered a special case of a general topological space, with any given topological space giving rise to many distinct metric spaces. In 1914, Felix Hausdorff coined the term "topological space" and gave the definition for what is now called a Hausdorff space. A topological space is a slight generalization of Hausdorff spaces, given in 1922 by Kazimierz Kuratowski. Modern topology depends on the ideas of set theory, developed by Georg Cantor in the part of the 19th century. In addition to establishing the basic ideas of set theory, Cantor considered point sets in Euclidean space as part of his study of Fourier series.

Topology can be formally defined as "the study of qualitative properties of certain objects that are invariant under a certain kind of transformation those properties that are invariant under a certain kind of invertible transformation." Topology is used to refer to a structure imposed upon a set X, a structure that characterizes the set X as a topological space by taking proper care of properties such as convergence and continuity, upon transformation. Topological spaces show up in every branch of mathematics; this has made topology one of the great unifying ideas of mathematics. The motivating insight behind topology is that some geometric problems depend not on the exact shape of the objects involved, but rather on the way they are put together. For example, the square and the circle have many properties in common: they are both one dimensional objects and both separate the plane into two parts, the part inside and the part outside.
In one of the first papers in topology, Leonhard Euler demonstrated that it was impossible to find a route through the town of Königsberg that would cross each of its seven bridges once. This result did not depend on the lengths of the bridges or on their distance from one another, but only on connectivity properties: which bridges connect to which islands or riverbanks; this Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem led to the branch of mathematics known as graph theory. The hairy ball theorem of algebraic topology says that "one cannot comb the hair flat on a hairy ball without creating a cowlick." This fact is convincing to most people though they might not recognize the more formal statement of the theorem, that there is no nonvanishing continuous tangent vector field on the sphere. A generalization is the formulation of general concepts from specific instances by abstracting common properties. Generalizations posit the existence of a domain or set of elements, as well as one or more common characteristics shared by those elements; as such, they are the essential basis of all valid deductive inferences. The process of verification is necessary to determine whether a generalization holds true for any given situation. Generalization is the process of identifying the parts of a whole, as belonging to the whole; the parts unrelated may be brought together as a group, belonging to the whole by establishing a common relation between them. It must be stated that, the parts cannot be generalized into a whole until a common relation is established among all the parts, but this does not mean that the parts are unrelated, only that no common relation has been established yet for the generalization. The concept of generalization has broad application in many connected disciplines, sometimes having a specialized context or meaning.
Of any two related concepts, such as A and B, A is a "generalization" of B, B is a special case of A, if and only if every instance of concept B is an instance of concept A. For instance, animal is a generalization of bird because every bird is an animal, there are animals which are not birds.. The connection of generalization to specialization is reflected in the contrasting words hypernym and hyponym. A hypernym as a generic stands for a class or group of ranked items—for example, tree stands for ranked items such as peach and oak, ship stands for ranked items such as cruiser and steamer. In contrast, a hyponym is one of the items included in the generic, such as peach and oak which are included in tree, cruiser and steamer which are included in ship. A hypernym is superordinate to a hyponym, a hyponym is subordinate to a hypernym. An animal is a generalization of a bird, a fish, an amphibian and a reptile. Generalization has a long history in cartography as an art of creating maps for different scale and purpose.
Cartographic generalization is the process of selecting and representing information of a map in a way that adapts to the scale of the display medium of the map. In this way, every map has, to some extent, been generalized to match the criteria of display; this includes small cartographic scale maps. Cartographers must decide and adjust the content within their maps to create a suitable and useful map that conveys geospatial information within their representation of the world. Generalization is meant to be context-specific; that is to say generalized maps are those that emphasize the most important map elements while still representing the world in the most faithful and recognizable way. The level of detail and importance in what is remaining on the map must outweigh the insignificance of items that were generalized, as to preserve the distinguishing characteristics of what makes the map useful and important. A polygon is a generalization of a 3-sided triangle, a 4-sided quadrilateral, so on to n sides.

In mathematics, the Euclidean distance or Euclidean metric is the "ordinary" straight-line distance between two points in Euclidean space. With this distance, Euclidean space becomes a metric space; the associated norm is called the Euclidean norm. Older literature refers to the metric as the Pythagorean metric. A generalized term for the Euclidean norm is the L2 L2 distance; the Euclidean distance between points p and q is the length of the line segment connecting them. In Cartesian coordinates, if p = and q = are two points in Euclidean n-space the distance from p to q, or from q to p is given by the Pythagorean formula: The position of a point in a Euclidean n-space is a Euclidean vector. So, p and q may be represented as Euclidean vectors, starting from the origin of the space with their tips ending at the two points; the Euclidean norm, or Euclidean length, or magnitude of a vector measures the length of the vector: ‖ p ‖ = p 1 2 + p 2 2 + ⋯ + p n 2 = p ⋅ p, where the last expression involves the dot product.
Describing a vector as a directed line segment from the origin of the Euclidean space, to a point in that space, its length is the distance from its tail to its tip. The Euclidean norm of a vector is seen to be just the Euclidean distance between its tail and its tip; the relationship between points p and q may involve a direction, so when it does, this relationship can itself be represented by a vector, given by q − p =. In a two- or three-dimensional space, this can be visually represented as an arrow from p to q. In any space it can be regarded as the position of q relative to p, it may be called a displacement vector if p and q represent two positions of some moving point. The Euclidean distance between p and q is just the Euclidean length of this displacement vector:, equivalent to equation 1, to: ‖ q − p ‖ = ‖ p ‖ 2 + ‖ q ‖ 2 − 2 p ⋅ q. In the context of Euclidean geometry, a metric is established in one dimension by fixing two points on a line, choosing one to be the origin; the length of the line segment between these points defines the unit of distance and the direction from the origin to the second point is defined as the positive direction.
This line segment may be translated along the line to build longer segments whose lengths correspond to multiples of the unit distance. In this manner real numbers can be associated to points on the line and these are the Cartesian coordinates of the points on what may now be called the real line; as an alternate way to establish the metric, instead of choosing two points on the line, choose one point to be the origin, a unit of length and a direction along the line to call positive. The second point is uniquely determined as the point on the line, at a distance of one positive unit from the origin; the distance between any two points on the real line is the absolute value of the numerical difference of their coordinates. Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics, classically studying zeros of multivariate polynomials. Modern algebraic geometry is based on the use of abstract algebraic techniques from commutative algebra, for solving geometrical problems about these sets of zeros; the fundamental objects of study in algebraic geometry are algebraic varieties, which are geometric manifestations of solutions of systems of polynomial equations. Examples of the most studied classes of algebraic varieties are: plane algebraic curves, which include lines, parabolas, hyperbolas, cubic curves like elliptic curves, quartic curves like lemniscates and Cassini ovals. A point of the plane belongs to an algebraic curve if its coordinates satisfy a given polynomial equation. Basic questions involve the study of the points of special interest like the singular points, the inflection points and the points at infinity. More advanced questions involve the topology of the curve and relations between the curves given by different equations.
Algebraic geometry occupies a central place in modern mathematics and has multiple conceptual connections with such diverse fields as complex analysis and number theory. A study of systems of polynomial equations in several variables, the subject of algebraic geometry starts where equation solving leaves off, it becomes more important to understand the intrinsic properties of the totality of solutions of a system of equations, than to find a specific solution. In the 20th century, algebraic geometry split into several subareas; the mainstream of algebraic geometry is devoted to the study of the complex points of the algebraic varieties and more to the points with coordinates in an algebraically closed field. Real algebraic geometry is the study of the real points of an algebraic variety. Diophantine geometry and, more arithmetic geometry is the study of the points of an algebraic variety with coordinates in fields that are not algebraically closed and occur in algebraic number theory, such as the field of rational numbers, number fields, finite fields, function fields, p-adic fields.
A large part of singularity theory is devoted to the singularities of algebraic varieties. Computational algebraic geometry is an area that has emerged at the intersection of algebraic geometry and computer algebra, with the rise of computers, it consists of algorithm design and software development for the study of properties of explicitly given algebraic varieties. Much of the development of the mainstream of algebraic geometry in the 20th century occurred within an abstract algebraic framework, with increasing emphasis being placed on "intrinsic" properties of algebraic varieties not dependent on any particular way of embedding the variety in an ambient coordinate space. One key achievement of this abstract algebraic geometry is Grothendieck's scheme theory which allows one to use sheaf theory to study algebraic varieties in a way, similar to its use in the study of differential and analytic manifolds; this is obtained by extending the notion of point: In classical algebraic geometry, a point of an affine variety may be identified, through Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, with a maximal ideal of the coordinate ring, while the points of the corresponding affine scheme are all prime ideals of this ring.
This means that a point of such a scheme may be either a subvariety. This approach enables a unification of the language and the tools of classical algebraic geometry concerned with complex points, of algebraic number theory. Wiles' proof of the longstanding conjecture called Fermat's last theorem is an example of the power of this approach. In classical algebraic geometry, the main objects of interest are the vanishing sets of collections of polynomials, meaning the set of all points that satisfy one or more polynomial equations. For instance, the two-dimensional sphere of radius 1 in three-dimensional Euclidean space R3 could be defined as the set of all points with x 2 + y 2 + z 2 − 1 = 0. A "slanted" circle in R3 can be defined as the set of all points which satisfy the two polynomial equations x 2 + y 2 + z 2 − 1 = 0, x + y + z = 0. First we start with a field k. In classical algebraic geometry, this field was always the complex numbers C, but many of the same results are true if we assume only that k is algebraically closed.
We consider the affine space of dimension n over denoted An. When one fixes a coordinate system, one may identify An with kn; the purpose of not working with kn is to emphasize that one "forgets" the vector space structure that kn carries.
