Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park (Berlin U-Bahn)
Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park is a Berlin U-Bahn station opened in 1998 on the U 2 line in the Tiergarten district, at the border with Kreuzberg. The station received its name after a small park east of the building, itself named in honor of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy known as Felix Mendelssohn. Though it is one of the youngest stations of the Berlin U-Bahn system, it is located on the first Stammstrecke line of 1902, where its northern branch crosses the Landwehr Canal on a viaduct and passes north through part of the Scandic Hotel before heading underground towards Potsdamer Platz. With the building of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961, train service was interrupted and for a brief time in 1991 the tracks served for the experimental M-Bahn maglev line, stopping at Bernburger Strasse station to the north. Following reunification, the M-Bahn was removed to allow the U-Bahn U2 to be reinstated; the line was reopened on 13 November 1993, the station with access to the debis headquarters of the former Daimler-Benz company however was not opened until 2 October 1998.

Berlin Alexanderplatz station
Berlin Alexanderplatz is a German railway station in the Mitte district of Berlin's city centre. It is one of the busiest transport hubs in the Berlin area; the station is named for the Alexanderplatz on which it is located, near the Fernsehturm and the World clock. Like other long-distance stations, Alexanderplatz is a shopping centre for selling merchandise to travelers. Due to its importance and central location, it is a site where tourists change. Alexanderplatz thereby became beside Nollendorfplatz station the second major hub of the Berlin U-Bahn network. Four Regional-Express and Regionalbahn lines as well as the S-Bahn rapid transit lines S 3, S 5, S 7, S 9 call at the overground station; the adjacent underground station is one of the largest on the Berlin U-Bahn network, with the lines U 2, U 5 and U 8 calling. The station is served by four tram lines, two of which run continuously, as well as five bus lines during the day, one of which runs continuously and three night bus lines. Alexanderplatz is connected through the two tunnel links, from U2 to U5 and U5 to U8.
Alexanderplatz station opened on 7 February 1882 on the Berlin Stadtbahn viaduct from Charlottenburg to Ostbahnhof. In 1926 the station hall spanning two platforms with four tracks was rebuilt in its present plain style. Damaged in World War II, train service at the station was resumed on 4 November 1945, while the reconstruction of the hall continued until 1951; the first U-Bahn station of the present U2 line designed by Alfred Grenander entered service on 1 July 1913. The platforms of the U8 and the U5 opened on 18 April 1930 and 21 December 1930 also built according to Grenander's conception, but in a distinct Modern style; the U2 station was renovated after the Alexanderplatz fire in 1972. The eastern entrances were destroyed on 15 March 1945; the U8 station was a ghost station during the division of Berlin from 13 August 1961 to 1 July 1990. The station master offices were built; the access at Dirksenstraße had to be made accessible again, just like the connecting stairs to the mall and to the platforms of Line E.
Other than that, the intercommunication staircase was built towards Line E so that it goes through the dimly lit platforms. Stainallee was renamed a few months after the closure of the stairs. In all cases, the metro stations had to be recognizable as such on the surface; the U-Bahn logo has been removed in recent years. This station had to undergo renovation works from 17 May to 30 June 1990 before the full reopening on 1 July 1990; the U2 station had undergone renovation work in January 2001 to March 2001. The U5 station underwent renovation works from February 2003 to September 2004, it is a U5 westbound terminus from 1930 to 2019, where it will be replaced by Berlin Hauptbahnhof. Kurfürstenstraße (Berlin U-Bahn)
The underground station Kurfürstenstraße is part of the Berlin U-Bahn network in Germany. It is on the U1 and U3; the station opened on 24 October 1926 and it is located in Berlin Mitte borough. It lies just to the north of Bülowstraße, the corresponding station on the U2, in the southeast corner of Tiergarten; the area has a rather seedy reputation due to prostitution. Berlin Schönhauser Allee station
Berlin Schönhauser Allee is a railway station in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin. It is located on the Berlin U-Bahn line U 2 and on the Ringbahn. Built in 1913 by A. Grenander opened as "Bahnhof Nordring"; as the station was well accepted the roof was elongated in 1925 and a new entrance build. In 1936 the station was named "Schönhauser Allee". On an average day 500 trains and more than 26000 people cross this station. At this station, the Elevated U2 crosses the below-ground S-bahn, while at the other crossing of the U2 and the ringbahn, messe-nord/Icc S-bahn station and kaiserdamm U2 station, the U2 crosses above the below-ground s-bahn on the bottom deck of a road bridge
Kottbusser Tor (Berlin U-Bahn)
Kottbusser Tor is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U 1, U 3 and U 8. Many Berliners use the affectionate term Kotti, it is located in central Kreuzberg. The area has a bad reputation for the high drug-related crime rate, instances of which have become quite rare in most other parts of the district; the original Kottbusser Tor was a southern city gate of Berlin. The station on the first Berlin U-Bahn line from Potsdamer Platz to Stralauer Tor was opened on 18 February 1902 on a viaduct above Skalitzer Straße; when in 1926 the U8 was built, a new two-level station was constructed 100 metres westwards to allow both lines to meet in one location, the original station was demolished. It was directly hit on 26 February 1945
Kurfürstendamm (Berlin U-Bahn)
Kurfürstendamm is an underground station, part of the Berlin U-Bahn network in Germany. It is on the U 1 and U 9 line and opened on 28 August 1961, when the first section of the U9 between Spichernstraße and Leopoldplatz was inaugurated; as there had been no stop of the U1 where it now crossed the U9, the line received an additional station here. It lies in eastern Charlottenburg on the intersection of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimstaler Straße, south of Zoologischer Garten Berlin and the Bahnhof Zoo. At the road junction above the station can be found the Café Kranzler, successor of the Café des Westens, a famous venue for artists and bohémiens of the pre–World War I era, as well as the Swissôtel Berlin; the well-known Kurfürstendamm boulevard is the most important upscale shopping district in Berlin. Next to the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche on Breitscheidplatz, shattered during the air raids in World War II, a modern new church was built
Battle of Berlin
The Battle of Berlin, designated the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation by the Soviet Union, known as the Fall of Berlin, was one of the last major offensives of the European theatre of World War II. Following the Vistula–Oder Offensive of January–February 1945, the Red Army had temporarily halted on a line 60 km east of Berlin. On 9 March, Germany established its defence plan for the city with Operation Clausewitz; the first defensive preparations at the outskirts of Berlin were made on 20 March, under the newly appointed commander of Army Group Vistula, General Gotthard Heinrici. When the Soviet offensive resumed on 16 April, two Soviet fronts attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin. Before the main battle in Berlin commenced, the Red Army encircled the city after successful battles of the Seelow Heights and Halbe. On 20 April 1945, Hitler's birthday, the 1st Belorussian Front led by Marshal Georgy Zhukov, advancing from the east and north, started shelling Berlin's city centre, while Marshal Ivan Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front broke through Army Group Centre and advanced towards the southern suburbs of Berlin.
On 23 April General Helmuth Weidling assumed command of the forces within Berlin. The garrison consisted of several depleted and disorganised Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS divisions, along with poorly trained Volkssturm and Hitler Youth members. Over the course of the next week, the Red Army took the entire city. Before the battle was over and several of his followers killed themselves; the city's garrison surrendered on 2 May but fighting continued to the north-west and south-west of the city until the end of the war in Europe on 8 May as some German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets. Starting on 12 January 1945, the Red Army began the Vistula–Oder Offensive across the Narew River. On the fourth day, the Red Army broke out and started moving west, up to 30 to 40 km per day, taking East Prussia and Poznań, drawing up on a line 60 km east of Berlin along the Oder River; the newly created Army Group Vistula, under the command of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, attempted a counter-attack, but this had failed by 24 February.
The Red Army drove on to Pomerania, clearing the right bank of the Oder River, thereby reaching into Silesia. In the south the Siege of Budapest raged. Three German divisions' attempts to relieve the encircled Hungarian capital city failed, Budapest fell to the Soviets on 13 February. Adolf Hitler insisted on a counter-attack to recapture the Drau-Danube triangle; the goal was to secure the oil region of Nagykanizsa and regain the Danube River for future operations, but the depleted German forces had been given an impossible task. By 16 March, the German Lake Balaton Offensive had failed, a counter-attack by the Red Army took back in 24 hours everything the Germans had taken ten days to gain. On 30 March, the Soviets entered Austria. Between June and September 1944, the Wehrmacht had lost more than a million men, it lacked the fuel and armaments needed to operate effectively. On 12 April 1945, who had earlier decided to remain in the city against the wishes of his advisers, heard the news that the American President Franklin D. Roosevelt had died.
This raised false hopes in the Führerbunker that there might yet be a falling out among the Allies and that Berlin would be saved at the last moment, as had happened once before when Berlin was threatened. No plans were made by the Western Allies to seize the city by a ground operation; the Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force, General Eisenhower lost interest in the race to Berlin and saw no further need to suffer casualties by attacking a city that would be in the Soviet sphere of influence after the war, envisioning excessive friendly fire if both armies attempted to occupy the city at once. The major Western Allied contribution to the battle was the bombing of Berlin during 1945. During 1945 the United States Army Air Forces launched large daytime raids on Berlin and for 36 nights in succession, scores of RAF Mosquitos bombed the German capital, ending on the night of 20/21 April 1945 just before the Soviets entered the city; the Soviet offensive into central Germany, what became East Germany, had two objectives.
Stalin did not believe the Western Allies would hand over territory occupied by them in the post-war Soviet zone, so he began the offensive on a broad front and moved to meet the Western Allies as far west as possible. But the overriding objective was to capture Berlin; the two goals were complementary because possession of the zone could not be won unless Berlin were taken. Another consideration was that Berlin itself held useful post-war strategic assets, including Adolf Hitler and the German atomic bomb programme. On 6 March, Hitler appointed Lieutenant General Helmuth Reymann commander of the Berlin Defence Area, replacing Lieutenant General Bruno Ritter von Hauenschild. On 20 March, General Gotthard Heinrici was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Army Group Vistula replacing Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler. Heinrici was one of the best defensive tacticians in the German army, he started to lay defensive plans. Heinrici assessed that the main Soviet thrust would be made over the Oder River and along the main east-west Autobahn.
He decided not to try to defend the banks of the Oder with anything more than a light skirmishing screen. Instead, Heinrici arranged for engineers
