Quantum mechanics, including quantum field theory, is a fundamental theory in physics which describes nature at the smallest scales of energy levels of atoms and subatomic particles. Classical physics, the physics existing before quantum mechanics, describes nature at ordinary scale. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large scale. Quantum mechanics differs from classical physics in that energy, angular momentum and other quantities of a bound system are restricted to discrete values. Quantum mechanics arose from theories to explain observations which could not be reconciled with classical physics, such as Max Planck's solution in 1900 to the black-body radiation problem, from the correspondence between energy and frequency in Albert Einstein's 1905 paper which explained the photoelectric effect. Early quantum theory was profoundly re-conceived in the mid-1920s by Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and others; the modern theory is formulated in various specially developed mathematical formalisms.
In one of them, a mathematical function, the wave function, provides information about the probability amplitude of position and other physical properties of a particle. Important applications of quantum theory include quantum chemistry, quantum optics, quantum computing, superconducting magnets, light-emitting diodes, the laser, the transistor and semiconductors such as the microprocessor and research imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging and electron microscopy. Explanations for many biological and physical phenomena are rooted in the nature of the chemical bond, most notably the macro-molecule DNA. Scientific inquiry into the wave nature of light began in the 17th and 18th centuries, when scientists such as Robert Hooke, Christiaan Huygens and Leonhard Euler proposed a wave theory of light based on experimental observations. In 1803, Thomas Young, an English polymath, performed the famous double-slit experiment that he described in a paper titled On the nature of light and colours.
This experiment played a major role in the general acceptance of the wave theory of light. In 1838, Michael Faraday discovered cathode rays; these studies were followed by the 1859 statement of the black-body radiation problem by Gustav Kirchhoff, the 1877 suggestion by Ludwig Boltzmann that the energy states of a physical system can be discrete, the 1900 quantum hypothesis of Max Planck. Planck's hypothesis that energy is radiated and absorbed in discrete "quanta" matched the observed patterns of black-body radiation. In 1896, Wilhelm Wien empirically determined a distribution law of black-body radiation, known as Wien's law in his honor. Ludwig Boltzmann independently arrived at this result by considerations of Maxwell's equations. However, it underestimated the radiance at low frequencies. Planck corrected this model using Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of thermodynamics and proposed what is now called Planck's law, which led to the development of quantum mechanics. Following Max Planck's solution in 1900 to the black-body radiation problem, Albert Einstein offered a quantum-based theory to explain the photoelectric effect.
Around 1900–1910, the atomic theory and the corpuscular theory of light first came to be accepted as scientific fact. Among the first to study quantum phenomena in nature were Arthur Compton, C. V. Raman, Pieter Zeeman, each of whom has a quantum effect named after him. Robert Andrews Millikan studied the photoelectric effect experimentally, Albert Einstein developed a theory for it. At the same time, Ernest Rutherford experimentally discovered the nuclear model of the atom, for which Niels Bohr developed his theory of the atomic structure, confirmed by the experiments of Henry Moseley. In 1913, Peter Debye extended Niels Bohr's theory of atomic structure, introducing elliptical orbits, a concept introduced by Arnold Sommerfeld; this phase is known as old quantum theory. According to Planck, each energy element is proportional to its frequency: E = h ν, where h is Planck's constant. Planck cautiously insisted that this was an aspect of the processes of absorption and emission of radiation and had nothing to do with the physical reality of the radiation itself.
In fact, he considered his quantum hypothesis a mathematical trick to get the right answer rather than a sizable discovery. However, in 1905 Albert Einstein interpreted Planck's quantum hypothesis realistically and used it to explain the photoelectric effect, in which shining light on certain materials can eject electrons from the material, he won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. Einstein further developed this idea to show that an electromagnetic wave such as light could be described as a particle, with a discrete quantum of energy, dependent on its frequency; the foundations of quantum mechanics were established during the first half of the 20th century by Max Planck, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Louis de Broglie, Arthur Compton, Albert Einstein, Erwin Schrödinger, Max Born, John von Neumann, Paul Dirac, Enrico Fermi, Wolfgang Pauli, Max von Laue, Freeman Dyson, David Hilbert, Wi
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
In linear algebra, an eigenvector or characteristic vector of a linear transformation is a non-zero vector that changes by only a scalar factor when that linear transformation is applied to it. More formally, if T is a linear transformation from a vector space V over a field F into itself and v is a vector in V, not the zero vector v is an eigenvector of T if T is a scalar multiple of v; this condition can be written as the equation T = λ v, where λ is a scalar in the field F, known as the eigenvalue, characteristic value, or characteristic root associated with the eigenvector v. If the vector space V is finite-dimensional the linear transformation T can be represented as a square matrix A, the vector v by a column vector, rendering the above mapping as a matrix multiplication on the left-hand side and a scaling of the column vector on the right-hand side in the equation A v = λ v. There is a direct correspondence between n-by-n square matrices and linear transformations from an n-dimensional vector space to itself, given any basis of the vector space.
For this reason, it is equivalent to define eigenvalues and eigenvectors using either the language of matrices or the language of linear transformations. Geometrically, an eigenvector, corresponding to a real nonzero eigenvalue, points in a direction, stretched by the transformation and the eigenvalue is the factor by which it is stretched. If the eigenvalue is negative, the direction is reversed. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors feature prominently in the analysis of linear transformations; the prefix eigen- is adopted from the German word eigen for "proper", "characteristic". Utilized to study principal axes of the rotational motion of rigid bodies and eigenvectors have a wide range of applications, for example in stability analysis, vibration analysis, atomic orbitals, facial recognition, matrix diagonalization. In essence, an eigenvector v of a linear transformation T is a non-zero vector that, when T is applied to it, does not change direction. Applying T to the eigenvector only scales the eigenvector by the scalar value λ, called an eigenvalue.
This condition can be written as the equation T = λ v, referred to as the eigenvalue equation or eigenequation. In general, λ may be any scalar. For example, λ may be negative, in which case the eigenvector reverses direction as part of the scaling, or it may be zero or complex; the Mona Lisa example pictured at right provides a simple illustration. Each point on the painting can be represented as a vector pointing from the center of the painting to that point; the linear transformation in this example is called a shear mapping. Points in the top half are moved to the right and points in the bottom half are moved to the left proportional to how far they are from the horizontal axis that goes through the middle of the painting; the vectors pointing to each point in the original image are therefore tilted right or left and made longer or shorter by the transformation. Notice that points along the horizontal axis do not move at all. Therefore, any vector that points directly to the right or left with no vertical component is an eigenvector of this transformation because the mapping does not change its direction.
Moreover, these eigenvectors all have an eigenvalue equal to one because the mapping does not change their length, either. Linear transformations can take many different forms, mapping vectors in a variety of vector spaces, so the eigenvectors can take many forms. For example, the linear transformation could be a differential operator like d d x, in which case the eigenvectors are functions called eigenfunctions that are scaled by that differential operator, such as d d x e λ x = λ e λ x. Alternatively, the linear transformation could take the form of an n by n matrix, in which case the eigenvectors are n by 1 matrices that are referred to as eigenvectors. If the linear transformation is expressed in the form of an n by n matrix A the eigenvalue equation above for a linear transformation can be rewritten as the matrix multiplication A v = λ v, where the eigenvector v is an n by 1 matrix. For a matrix and eigenvectors can be used to decompose the matrix, for example by diagonalizing it. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors give rise to many related mathematical concepts, the prefix eigen- is applied liberally when naming them: The set of all eigenvectors of a linear transformation, each paired with its corresponding eigenvalue, is called the eigensystem of that transformation.
The set of all eigenvectors of T corresponding to the same eigenvalue, together with the zero vector, is called an eigenspace or characteristic space of T. Azimuthal quantum number
The azimuthal quantum number is a quantum number for an atomic orbital that determines its orbital angular momentum and describes the shape of the orbital. The azimuthal quantum number is the second of a set of quantum numbers which describe the unique quantum state of an electron, it is known as the orbital angular momentum quantum number, orbital quantum number or second quantum number, is symbolized as ℓ. Connected with the energy states of the atom's electrons are four quantum numbers: n, ℓ, mℓ, ms; these specify the complete, unique quantum state of a single electron in an atom, make up its wavefunction or orbital. The wavefunction of the Schrödinger equation reduces to three equations that when solved, lead to the first three quantum numbers. Therefore, the equations for the first three quantum numbers are all interrelated; the azimuthal quantum number arose in the solution of the polar part of the wave equation as shown below. To aid understanding of this concept of the azimuth, it may prove helpful to review spherical coordinate systems, and/or other alternative mathematical coordinate systems besides the Cartesian coordinate system.
The spherical coordinate system works best with spherical models, the cylindrical system with cylinders, the cartesian with general volumes, etc. An atomic electron's angular momentum, L, is related to its quantum number ℓ by the following equation: L 2 Ψ = ℏ 2 ℓ Ψ where ħ is the reduced Planck's constant, L2 is the orbital angular momentum operator and Ψ is the wavefunction of the electron; the quantum number ℓ is always a non-negative integer: 1, 2, 3, etc.. While many introductory textbooks on quantum mechanics will refer to L by itself, L has no real meaning except in its use as the angular momentum operator; when referring to angular momentum, it is better to use the quantum number ℓ. Atomic orbitals have distinctive shapes denoted by letters. In the illustration, the letters s, p, d describe the shape of the atomic orbital, their wavefunctions take the form of spherical harmonics, so are described by Legendre polynomials. The various orbitals relating to different values of ℓ are sometimes called sub-shells, are referred to by letters, as follows: Each of the different angular momentum states can take 2 electrons.
This is because the third quantum number mℓ runs from −ℓ to ℓ in integer units, so there are 2ℓ + 1 possible states. Each distinct n, ℓ, mℓ orbital can be occupied by two electrons with opposing spins, giving 2 electrons overall. Orbitals with higher ℓ than given in the table are permissible, but these values cover all atoms so far discovered. For a given value of the principal quantum number n, the possible values of ℓ range from 0 to n − 1. Speaking, the maximum number of electrons in the nth energy level is 2n2; the angular momentum quantum number, ℓ, governs the number of planar nodes going through the nucleus. A planar node can be described in an electromagnetic wave as the midpoint between crest and trough, which has zero magnitude. In an s orbital, no nodes go through the nucleus, therefore the corresponding azimuthal quantum number ℓ takes the value of 0. A physical quantity is said to have a discrete spectrum if it takes only distinct values, with gaps between one value and the next. The classical example of discrete spectrum is the characteristic set of discrete spectral lines seen in the emission spectrum and absorption spectrum of isolated atoms of a chemical element, which only absorb and emit light at particular wavelengths; the technique of spectroscopy is based on this phenomenon. Discrete spectra are contrasted with the continuous spectra seen in such experiments, for example in thermal emission, in synchrotron radiation, many other light-producing phenomena. Discrete spectra are seen in many other phenomena, such as vibrating strings, microwaves in a metal cavity, sound waves in a pulsating star, resonances in high-energy particle physics; the general phenomenon of discrete spectra in physical systems can be mathematically modeled with tools of functional analysis by the decomposition of the spectrum of a linear operator acting on a functional space.
In classical mechanics, discrete spectra are associated to waves and oscillations in a bounded object or domain. Mathematically they can be identified with the eigenvalues of differential operators that describe the evolution of some continuous variable as a function of time and/or space. Discrete spectra are produced by some non-linear oscillators where the relevant quantity has a non-sinusoidal waveform. Notable examples are the sound produced by the vocal chords of mammals. and the stridulation organs of crickets, whose spectrum shows a series of strong lines at frequencies that are integer multiples of the oscillation frequency. A related phenomenon is the appearance of strong harmonics when a sinusoidal signal is modified by a non-linear filter. In the latter case, if two arbitrary sinusoidal signals with frequencies f and g are processed together, the output signal will have spectral lines at frequencies |mf + ng| where m and n are any integers. In quantum mechanics, the discrete spectrum of an observable corresponds to the eigenvalues of the operator used to model that observable.
According to the mathematical theory of such operators, its eigenvalues are a discrete set of isolated points, which may be either finite or countable. Discrete spectra are associated with systems that are bound in some sense; the position and momentum operators have continuous spectra in an infinite domain, but a discrete spectrum in a compact domain and the same properties of spectra hold for angular momentum and other operators of quantum systems. The quantum harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen atom are examples of physical systems in which the Hamiltonian has a discrete spectrum. In physics, the kinetic energy of an object is the energy that it possesses due to its motion. It is defined as the work needed to accelerate a body of a given mass from rest to its stated velocity. Having gained this energy during its acceleration, the body maintains this kinetic energy unless its speed changes; the same amount of work is done by the body when decelerating from its current speed to a state of rest. In classical mechanics, the kinetic energy of a non-rotating object of mass m traveling at a speed v is 1 2 m v 2. In relativistic mechanics, this is a good approximation only when v is much less than the speed of light; the standard unit of kinetic energy is the joule. The imperial unit of kinetic energy is the foot-pound; the adjective kinetic has its roots in the Greek word κίνησις kinesis, meaning "motion". The dichotomy between kinetic energy and potential energy can be traced back to Aristotle's concepts of actuality and potentiality; the principle in classical mechanics that E ∝ mv2 was first developed by Gottfried Leibniz and Johann Bernoulli, who described kinetic energy as the living force, vis viva.

Early understandings of these ideas can be attributed to Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis, who in 1829 published the paper titled Du Calcul de l'Effet des Machines outlining the mathematics of kinetic energy. William Thomson Lord Kelvin, is given the credit for coining the term "kinetic energy" c. 1849–51. Energy occurs in many forms, including chemical energy, thermal energy, electromagnetic radiation, gravitational energy, electric energy, elastic energy, nuclear energy, rest energy; these can be categorized in two main classes: kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the movement energy of an object.
Kinetic energy can be transformed into other kinds of energy. Kinetic energy may be best understood by examples that demonstrate how it is transformed to and from other forms of energy. For example, a cyclist uses chemical energy provided by food to accelerate a bicycle to a chosen speed. On a level surface, this speed can be maintained without further work, except to overcome air resistance and friction; the chemical energy has been converted into kinetic energy, the energy of motion, but the process is not efficient and produces heat within the cyclist. The kinetic energy in the moving cyclist and the bicycle can be converted to other forms. For example, the cyclist could encounter a hill just high enough to coast up, so that the bicycle comes to a complete halt at the top; the kinetic energy has now been converted to gravitational potential energy that can be released by freewheeling down the other side of the hill. Since the bicycle lost some of its energy to friction, it never regains all of its speed without additional pedaling.
The energy is not destroyed. Alternatively, the cyclist could connect a dynamo to one of the wheels and generate some electrical energy on the descent; the bicycle would be traveling slower at the bottom of the hill than without the generator because some of the energy has been diverted into electrical energy. Another possibility would be for the cyclist to apply the brakes, in which case the kinetic energy would be dissipated through friction as heat. Like any physical quantity, a function of velocity, the kinetic energy of an object depends on the relationship between the object and the observer's frame of reference. Thus, the kinetic energy of an object is not invariant. Spacecraft use chemical energy to launch and gain considerable kinetic energy to reach orbital velocity. In an circular orbit, this kinetic energy remains constant because there is no friction in near-earth space. However, it becomes apparent at re-entry. If the orbit is elliptical or hyperbolic throughout the orbit kinetic and potential energy are exchanged.
Without loss or gain, the sum of the kinetic and potential energy remains constant. Kinetic energy can be passed from one object to another. In the game of billiards, the player imposes kinetic energy on the cue ball by striking it with the cue stick. If the cue ball collides with another ball, it slows down and the ball it hit accelerates its speed as the kinetic energy is passed on to it. Collisions in billiards are elastic collisions, in which kinetic energy is preserved. In inelastic collisions, kinetic energy is dissipated in various forms of energy, such as heat, binding energy. Flywheels have been developed as a method of energy storage; this illustrates that kinetic energy is stored in rotational motion. Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. It is referred to as temporal frequency, which emphasizes the contrast to spatial frequency and angular frequency; the period is the duration of time of one cycle in a repeating event, so the period is the reciprocal of the frequency. For example: if a newborn baby's heart beats at a frequency of 120 times a minute, its period—the time interval between beats—is half a second. Frequency is an important parameter used in science and engineering to specify the rate of oscillatory and vibratory phenomena, such as mechanical vibrations, audio signals, radio waves, light. For cyclical processes, such as rotation, oscillations, or waves, frequency is defined as a number of cycles per unit time. In physics and engineering disciplines, such as optics and radio, frequency is denoted by a Latin letter f or by the Greek letter ν or ν; the relation between the frequency and the period T of a repeating event or oscillation is given by f = 1 T.
The SI derived unit of frequency is the hertz, named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz. One hertz means. If a TV has a refresh rate of 1 hertz the TV's screen will change its picture once a second. A previous name for this unit was cycles per second; the SI unit for period is the second. A traditional unit of measure used with rotating mechanical devices is revolutions per minute, abbreviated r/min or rpm. 60 rpm equals one hertz. As a matter of convenience and slower waves, such as ocean surface waves, tend to be described by wave period rather than frequency. In physics, angular momentum is the rotational equivalent of linear momentum. It is an important quantity in physics because it is a conserved quantity—the total angular momentum of a closed system remains constant. In three dimensions, the angular momentum for a point particle is a pseudovector r × p, the cross product of the particle's position vector r and its momentum vector p = mv; this definition can be applied to each point in physical fields. Unlike momentum, angular momentum does depend on where the origin is chosen, since the particle's position is measured from it. Just like for angular velocity, there are two special types of angular momentum: the spin angular momentum and the orbital angular momentum; the spin angular momentum of an object is defined as the angular momentum about its centre of mass coordinate. The orbital angular momentum of an object about a chosen origin is defined as the angular momentum of the centre of mass about the origin; the total angular momentum of an object is the sum of orbital angular momenta.
The orbital angular momentum vector of a particle is always parallel and directly proportional to the orbital angular velocity vector ω of the particle, where the constant of proportionality depends on both the mass of the particle and its distance from origin. However, the spin angular momentum of the object is proportional but not always parallel to the spin angular velocity Ω, making the constant of proportionality a second-rank tensor rather than a scalar. Angular momentum is additive. For a continuous rigid body, the total angular momentum is the volume integral of angular momentum density over the entire body. Torque can be defined as the rate of change of angular momentum, analogous to force; the net external torque on any system is always equal to the total torque on the system. Therefore, for a closed system, the total torque on the system must be 0, which means that the total angular momentum of the system is constant; the conservation of angular momentum helps explain many observed phenomena, for example the increase in rotational speed of a spinning figure skater as the skater's arms are contracted, the high rotational rates of neutron stars, the Coriolis effect, the precession of gyroscopes.
In general, conservation does limit the possible motion of a system, but does not uniquely determine what the exact motion is. In quantum mechanics, angular momentum is an operator with quantized eigenvalues. Angular momentum is subject to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, meaning that at any time, only one component can be measured with definite precision; because of this, it turns out that the notion of an elementary particle "spinning" about an axis does not exist. For technical reasons, elementary particles still possess a spin angular momentum, but this angular momentum does not correspond to spinning motion in the ordinary sense. Angular momentum is a vector quantity that represents the product of a body's rotational inertia and rotational velocity about a particular axis. However, if the particle's trajectory lies in a single plane, it is sufficient to discard the vector nature of angular momentum, treat it as a scalar. Unlike mass, which depends only on amount of matter, moment of inertia is dependent on the position of the axis of rotation and the shape of the matter. Unlike linear speed, which does not depend upon the choice of origin, angular velocity is always measured with respect to a fixed origin; therefore speaking, L should be referred to as the angular momentum relative to that center.
