USA Network renewed the series for a season on December 19,2012, to include eight episodes. On February 5,2014, USA Network confirmed that the season of Psych would be its last. Most episodes begin with a cold open in the form of a flashback to Shawn, the flashbacks usually involve Shawn and Gus being taught a lesson by a young Henry Spencer, who wishes that his son would follow in his footsteps and become a law enforcement officer. These lessons often play a role for the climax of the episode, as a child, Shawn was taught by Henry to hone his powers of observation and deduction, often using games and challenges to test him. Each flashback also sets the theme for the episode, Shawn originally becomes known as a psychic when, after calling in tips on dozens of crimes covered on the news which help the police to close the case, the police become suspicious of his knowledge. The police theorize that such knowledge could only come from the inside, to avoid being sent to jail, Shawn uses his observational skills to convince the police that he is psychic. The interim police chief warns Shawn that if his powers are fake, pretending to have psychic powers allows him to engage in strange and comic behavior as he turns real clues into hunches and otherworldly visitations. He enjoys teasing lifelong friend Burton Guster, a pharmaceutical representative, Henry and Shawn have a difficult relationship, but despite this, Henry reluctantly helps Shawn on various occasions. Shawn Spencer is a consultant with the Santa Barbara Police Department who pretends to be a psychic. However, really his exceptional skills and eidetic memory allow him to obtain his visions. He refuses to take anything seriously, but has matured throughout the seasons. He has had romantic tension with Juliet OHara since they met, in the middle of season six, he tries to propose to her, but finds out that neither of them is ready. Though the two hit a bump in season seven when she discovers he is not psychic, they soon reconcile, when she moves to San Francisco to be Vicks head detective, he realizes he cannot live without her and resolves to move there. In a final effort to clean, he makes several DVDs, one of which he sends to Lassiter, upon which he starts to confess the truth to him

Shawn Spencer is a fictional character on the American television drama and comedy Psych played by American actor James Roday. Taking advantage of his memory, he poses as a psychic. Shawn is a baby, born in February 1977. His parents separated in 1992, and later divorced, his mother, Madeleine and his father, Henry Spencer, schooled Shawn in detective work from birth, aiding the development of his extraordinary powers of observation and deduction. At the age of 15, he achieved a score of 100 on the detectives exam. This is drawn loosely from the childhood of series creator Steve Franks, Franks father would ask him how many people were wearing hats in a restaurant, a tactic employed in the shows pilot episode by Shawns father. Though often it may seem that Henry is intentionally aggravating or imposing his will on his grown son, for example, tipping off the meter maid to ticket Shawns motorcycle which is parked too close to a hydrant outside his apartment. The impounding as a result was Henrys ultimate goal, as Shawn had gotten into an accident some time ago. When push comes to shove, Shawns father is there to back him up, whether it be providing advice on a case Shawn is stuck on or tracking down Shawns kidnappers. For years, Shawn blamed his father for leaving his mother and ending their marriage but in the season opener. Shawn thus realizes his father never told the truth as he didnt want to ruin the image Shawn had of his mother as near perfect and sees Henry in a new light. In his spare time, he entertains himself by calling in tips to the police hotline based on observations he has made on crime scenes shown in news footage. After one such tip, the Santa Barbara police become suspicious of Shawn, desperate to avoid jail time, Shawn lies, explaining that he obtained the information in a psychic vision. They hire Shawn as a consultant, although Shawn and Gus often have disagreements, they have been friends since early childhood and actor James Roday describes the pairs bond as unbreakable. Its one of those friendships that make people who dont have one ask and its not about putting up with one another. Around this time, Smith and Orzabal also became session musicians for the band Neon, fellow band members included Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher who went on to become the duo Naked Eyes. The duo spent the several years recording their 1989 album The Seeds of Love. Smiths last single as a lead vocalist with the group was Advice for the Young at Heart, following another world tour, increasing tensions between himself and Orzabal prompted Smith to leave the band in 1991 and he moved to New York. In 2000, routine paperwork obligations led to Orzabal and Smiths first conversation in nearly a decade. The two patched up their differences and, along with Smiths associate Charlton Pettus, began writing a new album – Everybody Loves a Happy Ending – released in 2004. Prior to this, Mad World was covered by Michael Andrews and it was released as a single and reached no.1 in the UK during Christmas 2003. The single re-ignited interest in the earlier work and their 1992 Greatest Hits album was re-released and re-entered the UK Top 10 for several weeks.
