Sweep picking

Sweep picking is a guitar playing technique. When sweep picking, the guitarist plays single notes on consecutive strings with a'sweeping' motion of the pick, while using the fretting hand to produce a specific series of notes that are fast and fluid in sound. Both hands perform an integral motion in unison to achieve the desired effect; the technique was first used and developed by jazz guitarists Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel in the 1950s, as well as rock guitarists Jan Akkerman, Ritchie Blackmore and Steve Hackett in the 1970s. In the 1980s, sweep picking became known for its use by shred guitarists including Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Tony MacAlpine and Marty Friedman. Jazz fusion guitarist Frank Gambale released several books and instructional videos about the technique, of which the most well-known is Monster Licks & Speed Picking in 1988. Guitarists use the technique to play arpeggios at high speed. A common fretting shape is the one- or two-octave stacked triad.

In scalar terms, this is the first and fifth of a scale, played twice, with an additional tonic added at the high end. For example, an A minor stacked triad is A-C-E-A-C-E-A; when the guitarist plays such a series of notes up and down as an arpeggio, the phrasing sounds typical of pianos and other instruments more associated with such arpeggios. Unlike pianos and many other instruments, the guitarist can change key by moving the same arpeggio shape up and down the fretboard. Compared to other techniques, such as alternate picking, sweep picking requires few strokes. In some instances, however, a guitarist uses hammer-ons and pull-offs to produce a legato sound instead of actual pick strokes; this applies when a certain string must sound two notes in the shape due to the natural limits of a fretted string instrument. However, as with all guitar techniques, individual players may integrate sweep picking into existing repertoire and use it in an individually stylistic manner. Therefore, some guitarists use legato techniques and others double-pick multiple notes on a single string.

These are separate yet related techniques that produce obvious differences in legato versus struck notes, as well as shift in the timing of the entire arpeggio. Furthering the idea, most players who master the basic sweep picking pattern use only parts of it, or alter the technique to achieve a certain lick. In this sense, sweep picking is not so much a concrete action such as the aforementioned alternate picking, but instead is a technical idea with many possible applications. A simple example of the technique is the use of the three-string sweep arpeggio done on the upper three strings. Beginning on the middle tonic of this progression, the player may sweep first up the arpeggio and back down to resolve on the initial tonic; this would notate as A-C-E-A-E-C-A. Written in tablature form for the twelfth position, it would be seen as: e|-------12-17-12-------| B|----13----------13----| G|-14----------------14-| D|----------------------| A|----------------------| E|----------------------| If one adds to it the lower octave of the arpeggio, the complete shape is seen as: e|----------------12-17-12----------------| B|-------------13----------13-------------| G|----------14----------------14----------| D|-------14----------------------14-------| A|-12-15----------------------------15-12-| E|----------------------------------------| In the middle of the above sequence, on the third and fourth string, the guitarist must finger the same fret for both strings.

There are more fingerings than humans have fingers, though both of these problems are solved by first fretting the initial string with the tip of the ring finger rolling into the next string by fretting it with the pad of the same finger. In the upstroke, one frets the third string first. Note that on the lowest and highest strings in the shape, two notes must be played following each other, but on the same string; this is that the guitarist can sustain a fluid picking motion. However, the guitarist can sound these notes in the arpeggio through other techniques—including changing pick articulation, double-picking notes, legato, or sliding, though the latter is less common because it requires acute control to slide to a precise point. A guitarist may continue a sweep to the next note by tapping to play passing notes outside the classic arpeggio. Sweep picking is not limited to a few note patterns. Guitarists can construct as many patterns as there are chords, apply sweep picking to any idea—arpeggio or otherwise

Proctalgia fugax

Proctalgia fugax, a variant of levator ani syndrome, is a severe, episodic pain in the regions of the rectum and anus. It can be caused by cramping of the levator ani muscle in the pubococcygeal part, it most occurs in the middle of the night and lasts from seconds to minutes. In a study published in 2007 involving 1809 patients, the attacks occurred in the daytime as well as at night and the average number of attacks was 13. Onset can be in childhood. Many studies showed that women are affected more than men, but this can be at least explained by men's reluctance to seek medical advice concerning rectal pain. Data on the number of people afflicted vary, but prevalence may be as high as 8–18%, it is thought that only 17–20% of sufferers consult a physician, so obtaining accurate data on occurrence presents a challenge. During an episode, the patient feels spasm-like, sometimes excruciating, pain in the rectum and/or anus misinterpreted as a need to defecate. To be diagnosed as proctalgia fugax, the pain must arise de novo.

As such, pain associated with constipation, penetrative anal intercourse, side-effects of some medications, or rectal foreign body insertion preclude this diagnosis. Simultaneous stimulation of the local autonomic nervous system can cause erection in males. In some people, twinges sometimes occur shortly after orgasm; the pain episode subsides by itself as the spasm may reoccur. Because of the high incidence of internal anal sphincter thickening with the disorder, it is thought to be a disorder of that muscle or that it is a neuralgia of pudendal nerves, it is not known to be linked to any disease process. High-voltage pulsed galvanic stimulation has been shown to be of prophylactic benefit, to reduce the incidence of attacks; the patient is placed in the left lateral decubitus position and a sterile probe is inserted into the anus. The negative electrode is used and the stimulator is set with a pulse frequency of 80 to 120 cycles per second; the voltage is started at 0, progressively raised to a threshold of patient discomfort, is decreased to a level that the patient finds comfortable.

As the patient's tolerance increases, the voltage can be increased to 250 to 350 Volts. Each treatment session lasts between 15 and 60 minutes. Several studies have reported short-term success rates that ranged from 65 to 91%. Low dose diazepam of around 2mg or less, or similar muscle-relaxant, taken orally at bedtime has been suggested as preventative, but its benefits are limited. There is no known cure; the most common approach for mild cases is reassurance and topical treatment with calcium-channel blocker ointment, salbutamol inhalation and topical nitroglycerine. For persistent cases, local anesthetic blocks, clonidine or botulinum toxin injections can be considered. Supportive treatments directed at aggravating factors include high-fiber diet, withdrawal of drugs which have gut effects, warm baths, rectal massage, perineal strengthening exercises, anticholinergic agents, non-narcotic analgesics, sedatives or muscle relaxants such as diazepam. In patients who suffer frequent, prolonged attacks, inhaled salbutamol has been shown in some studies to reduce their duration.

Traditional remedies have ranged from warm baths, warm to hot enemas, relaxation techniques. The yoga pose "downward facing dog" or modification from it seems to help to relax the muscles and ease the pain; the idea of the yoga pose is that the position will force the muscles to relax and therefore tension will relieve over time. Relaxing one's jaw muscles will help to relax the muscles in rectal area, a method used by women giving birth. PatientPlus

CDC display code

Display code is the six-bit character code used by many computer systems manufactured by Control Data Corporation, notably the CDC3000 series and the following CDC 6000 series in 1964. The CDC 6000 series, their followons, had 60 bit words; as such, typical usage packed 10 characters per word. It is a six-bit extension of the four-bit BCD encoding, was referred to as BCDIC There were several variations of display code, notably the 63-character character set, the 64-character character set. There were also'CDC graphic' and'ASCII graphic' variants of both the 63- and 64-character sets; the choice between 63- or 64-character character set, between CDC or ASCII graphic was site-selectable. Early CDC customers started out with the 63-character character set, CDC graphic print trains on their line printers; as time-sharing became prevalent all sites used the ASCII variant - so that line printer output would match interactive usage. CDC customers were more to use the 64-character character set. A variation, called 6/12 display code, was used in the Kronos and NOS timesharing systems in order to support full ASCII capabilities.

In 6/12 mode, an escape character would indicate. Thus, upper case and other characters were 6 bits in length, lower case characters were 12 bits in length; the PLATO system used a further variant of 6/12 display code. Noting that lower case letters were most common in typical PLATO usage, the roles were reversed. Lower case letters were the norm, the escape character preceded upper case letters; the typical text file format used a zero-byte terminator to signify the end of each record. The zero-byte terminator was indicated by, at least, the final twelve bits of a 60-bit word being set to zero; the terminator could be anywhere from 12- to 66-bits long - depending on the length of the record. This caused an ambiguity in the 64-character character set, when a colon character needed to be the final character in a record. In such cases a blank character was appended to the record after the trailing colon; the NOS 6/12 display code is one of the character sets used on CDC Cyber NOS computers to represent all ASCII characters.
