The Big Tall Wish
"The Big Tall Wish" is episode twenty-seven of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone, with an original score by Jerry Goldsmith. It aired on April 8, 1960 on CBS. Bolie Jackson is a washed-up boxer, he is knocked down and just about to be counted out, when he magically switches places with the other boxer. Bolie is now standing over his vanquished opponent. Bolie celebrates his victory, he remembers being knocked down and has no memory of getting back up to win, nor can he figure out why his knuckles feel fine. His manager tells Bolie. Bolie figures. However, there is one other person. Henry Temple, the young son of Bolie's girlfriend Frances, not only remembers, he has an explanation for what happened. Henry tells Bolie that he made "the biggest, tallest wish" he could come up with for Bolie, for the two boxers to switch positions, it came true. Bolie cannot accept this. Henry warns him. If Bolie does not believe, the wish will not work, but he is unswayed. As soon as he rejects the idea that a wish could have been responsible for what happened, he is returned to the fight, on the canvas.
This time the referee finishes counting Bolie out. Neither Bolie nor Henry have any memory of the alternate outcome. Henry remembers making the biggest wish he could for Bolie, but it did not work, so he declares with resignation that he will not be making any more wishes. "There ain't no such thing as magic, is there?", he asks Bolie. "I guess Henry", Bolie replies sadly. "Or maybe...maybe there is magic. And maybe there's wishes, too. I guess the trouble is...there's not enough people around to believe..." This is the Negro actor. A few other Twilight Zones followed the example of this episode and cast blacks in significant roles, including the pastor in "I Am the Night—Color Me Black", with Ivan Dixon, a child in the mall in "The Night of the Meek", the electrician in "The Brain Center at Whipple's"; these inclusions, though insignificant by modern standards, were so revolutionary at the time that The Twilight Zone was awarded the Unity Award for Outstanding Contributions to Better Race Relations in 1961. Cast in the lead role was champion boxer Archie Moore, who exclaimed, "Man, I was in the Twilight Zone!" when describing the punch delivered by his opponent Yvon Durelle. This is one of several episodes from season one where some broadcast prints have the opening title sequence replaced with that of season two; this was done during the summer of 1961 to help the season one shows fit in with the new look the show had taken during the following season. They use the same hallway shown in this episode in "Mr. Bevis", episode 33, but altered.

The Trouble with Templeton
"The Trouble with Templeton" is episode 45 of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone. It aired on December 9, 1960 on CBS. Aging Broadway actor Booth Templeton is at home, watching his much-younger wife, flirting with a gigolo at his backyard swimming pool. Booth's butler Marty comes in with his daily medication, Booth half-jokingly wonders what will happen when his pills stop working and he dies, he notes that he hasn't achieved any contentment with his wife and fondly reminisces over his happiness with Laura, his first wife, who died after seven years of marriage. Marty suggests that Booth tell the director of his new play that he can't make the first day of rehearsal, but Booth insists on going, he meets Sid Sperry, the play's unctuous financial backer. Sperry informs him. Booth enters to see Willis announcing to everyone in no uncertain terms that he is in charge and that everyone will do what he says, he lectures the cast about punctuality and discipline, implies that the distinguished Booth is no more important than any of the other players, ends with a pointed question to him about his commitment to the play.
Pressured and unhappy, Booth runs out the stage door, finds a crowd of admirers applauding him for his latest performance. Their attire, nearby vehicles, a play poster, a stagehand all inform him that he is inexplicably in 1927—more than 30 years in the past; the poster says that "1927's Big Hit!", The Great Seed, was written by Booth's best friend, Barney Flueger. The stagehand tells Booth. Eager to see Laura again, Booth runs to the speakeasy, the owner, lets him in. Laura assumes Booth is wearing aging makeup, he wants to talk to her in private about their relationship and the phenomenon he is experiencing. She refuses, she ignores him and fans herself with a script, which Booth snatches and puts in his jacket pocket. He tries to explain that he is from the future and that they are both dead in his time and have been only memories to him for years, they treat him as though he is joking or crazy, insist on partying instead. When Booth objects, Laura says "What did you expect?" Barney adds, "Yes, old man, what did you expect?"
This subtly indicates that, in fact, they both know well what is going on. Booth professes his love, but Laura bursts out laughing; when Booth tries to force her into leaving with him, she slaps him and tells him, "Go back where you came from. Confused and puzzled by Laura's hostility, Booth storms out; as soon as he leaves, the music ceases mid-song and everyone stops moving. The room becomes dark, with light only on Barney. Laura steps forward and Barney fades into the darkness. Alone, she stares sadly at the door of the bar. She, fades into the blackness and the world of the past disappears forever. Booth reenters the stage door, he is back in the present. He fans himself with Laura's script, notices that it is for a play titled What to Do When Booth Comes Back. Flipping through it, he discovers. Booth realizes that ghosts from his past were putting on a special performance for him, to force him from his paralyzing nostalgia for the past and instead, live his life in the present with new energy and focus.
Sperry and Willis are waiting for demand to know if he is there to work or not. Booth asserts himself, demanding respect from Willis; the rehearsal begins, with Booth now paying attention to where he is instead of and helplessly yearning for the dead past. Television in the United States
Television is one of the major mass media of the United States. As of 2011, household ownership of television sets in the country is 96.7%, with 114,200,000 American households owning at least one television set as of August 2013. The majority of households have more than one set; the peak ownership percentage of households with at least one television set occurred during the 1996–97 season, with 98.4% ownership. As a whole, the television networks that broadcast in the United States are the largest and most distributed in the world, programs produced for U. S.-based networks are the most syndicated internationally. Due to a recent surge in the number and popularity of critically acclaimed television series during the 2000s and the 2010s to date, many critics have said that American television is undergoing a modern golden age. In the United States, television is available via broadcast – the earliest method of receiving television programming, which requires an antenna and an equipped internal or external tuner capable of picking up channels that transmit on the two principal broadcast bands high frequency and ultra high frequency, in order to receive the signal – and four conventional types of multichannel subscription television: cable, unencrypted satellite, direct-broadcast satellite television and IPTV.
There are competing video services on the World Wide Web, which have become an popular mode of television viewing since the late 2000s with younger audiences as an alternative or a supplement to the aforementioned traditional forms of viewing television content. Individual broadcast television stations in the U. S. transmit on either VHF channels 2 through 13 or UHF channels 14 through 51. During the era of analog television, broadcast stations transmitted on a single universal channel; the UHF band spanned from channels 14 to 83, though the Federal Communications Commission has twice rescinded the high-end portions of the band from television broadcasting use for emergency and other telecommunications purposes in 1983 and 2009. As in other countries, television stations require a license to broadcast and must comply with certain requirements in order to retain it. Free-to-air and subscription television networks, are not required to file for a license to operate. Over-the-air and free-to-air television do not necessitate any monthly payments, while cable, direct broadcast satellite, IPTV and virtual MVPD services require monthly payments that vary depending on the number of channels that a subscriber chooses to pay for in a particular package.
Channels are sold in groups, rather than singularly. Most conventional subscription television services offer a limited basic tier, a minimum base package that includes only broadcast stations within the television market where the service is located, public and government access cable channels. "The Hitch-Hiker" is episode sixteen of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone. It aired on January 22, 1960 on CBS, it is based on Lucille Fletcher's The Hitch-Hiker. It is considered by some to be among the series' greatest episodes. Nan Adams, 27, on a cross-country road trip from New York City to Los Angeles, gets a flat tire on U. S. Route has an accident. A mechanic puts a spare tire on her car, comments that he's surprised she survived the accident, saying "you shouldn't've called for a mechanic, somebody shudda called for a hearse" and directs her to follow him to the nearest town to fix it properly. Just before she leaves, Nan notices a shabby and strange-looking man hitchhiking, but the mechanic doesn't see him when she mentions it. Unnerved, she drives away; as she continues her trip, Nan sees the same hitchhiker thumbing for a ride again in Virginia at several other points on her journey. She grows frightened of him; when she sees him on the other side of a railroad crossing, she tries to drive away but gets stuck on the tracks and is nearly hit by a train.
She becomes convinced. She continues becoming more and more afraid, stopping only when necessary; every time she stops, the hitchhiker is there. Nan gets stranded when she runs out of gas, she reaches a gas station on foot but it's closed, the proprietor refusing to reopen and sell her gas due to how late it is. She gets startled by a sailor on his way back to San Diego from leave. Eager for protection from the hitchhiker, she offers to drive the sailor to San Diego; the sailor persuades the gas station attendant to provide gas. As they drive together and discuss their mutual predicaments, she sees the hitchhiker on the road and swerves toward him; the sailor, who can't see him, questions her driving, she admits she was trying to run over the hitchhiker. The sailor begins to fear for his safety and leaves her, despite her efforts to have him stay offering to go out with him. In Arizona, Nan stops to call her mother; the woman who answers the phone says Mrs. Adams is in the hospital, having suffered a nervous breakdown after finding out that her daughter, died in Pennsylvania six days ago when the car she was driving blew a tire and overturned.
Nan realizes the truth: she never survived the accident in Pennsylvania and the hitchhiker is none other than personification of death and persistently waiting for her to realize that she has been dead all along. She loses all concern, feeling empty. Nan looks in the vanity mirror on the visor. Instead of her reflection, she sees in her place the hitchhiker, who says, "I believe you're going...my way?" All of these radio productions starred Orson Welles as Ronald Adams. Serling named his character "Nan", after one of his daughters. Nan's car is a light-colored 1959 Mercury Montclair four-door hardtop that had the inside rear-view mirror and front door vent windows removed.
However, in the scene where Nan swerved toward the hitch-hiker, the car shown is a black 1957 Ford two-door sedan. Richard Burton Matheson was an American author and screenwriter in the fantasy and science fiction genres. He is best known as the author of I Am Legend, a 1954 science fiction horror vampire novel, adapted for the screen four times, as well as the film Somewhere In Time for which he wrote the screenplay based on his novel Bid Time Return. Matheson wrote 16 television episodes of The Twilight Zone, including "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" and "Steel", he adapted his 1971 short story "Duel" as a screenplay directed by Steven Spielberg for the television film Duel that year. Seven of his novels and short stories have been adapted as motion pictures: The Shrinking Man, Hell House, What Dreams May Come, Bid Time Return, A Stir of Echoes and Button, Button; the movie Cold Sweat was based on his novel Riding the Nightmare, Les seins de glace was based on his novel Someone is Bleeding. Matheson was born in New Jersey to Norwegian immigrants Bertolf and Fanny Matheson, they divorced when he was 8, he was raised in Brooklyn, New York by his mother.
His early writing influences were the film Dracula, novels by Kenneth Roberts, a poem which he read in the newspaper Brooklyn Eagle, where he published his first short story at age 8. He entered Brooklyn Technical High School in 1939, graduated in 1943, served with the Army in Europe during World War II, he attended the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, earning his BA in 1949 moved to California. His first-written novel and Thirst, was ignored by publishers for several decades before being published in 2010, but his short story "Born of Man and Woman" was published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Summer 1950, the new quarterly's third issue and attracted attention, it is the tale of a monstrous child chained by its parents in the cellar, cast as the creature's diary in poignantly non-idiomatic English. That year he placed stories in the first and third numbers of Galaxy Science Fiction, a new monthly, his first anthology of work was published in 1954.
Between 1950 and 1971, he produced dozens of stories blending elements of the science fiction and fantasy genres. He was a member of the Southern California Sorcerers in the 1950s and 1960s, which included Charles Beaumont, Ray Bradbury, George Clayton Johnson, William F. Nolan, Jerry Sohl, others. Several of his stories, including "Third from the Sun", "Deadline", "Button, Button" are simple sketches with twist endings; some tales, such as "The Doll that Does Everything" and "The Funeral" incorporate satirical humour at the expense of genre clichés, are written in an overblown prose different from Matheson's usual pared-down style. Others, like "The Test" and "Steel", portray the moral and physical struggles of ordinary people, rather than the nearly ubiquitous scientists and superheroes, in situations which are at once futuristic and everyday. Still others, such as "Mad House", "The Curious Child", most of all, "Duel", are tales of paranoia, in which the everyday environment of the present day becomes inexplicably alien or threatening.
"Duel" was adapted into the 1971 TV movie of the same name. Matheson's first novel to be published, Someone Is Bleeding, appeared from Lion Books in 1953. In 1960, Matheson published The Beardless Warriors, a non-fantastic, autobiographical novel about teenage American soldiers in World War II, it was filmed in 1967 as The Young Warriors. During the 1950s he published a handful of Western stories, his other early novels include The Shrinking Man and a science fiction vampire novel, I Am Legend. Matheson wrote screenplays for several television programs including the Westerns Cheyenne, Have Gun – Will Travel, Lawman, he is most associated with the American TV series The Twilight Zone, for which he wrote more than a dozen episodes, including "Steel", "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", "Little Girl Lost", "Death Ship". For all of his Twilight Zone scripts, Matheson wrote the introductory and closing statements spoken by creator Rod Serling, he adapted five works of Edgar Allan Poe for Roger Corman's Poe series, including House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Raven.
He wrote the Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within". For Hammer Film Productions he wrote the screenplay for Fanatic based on the novel Nightmare by Anne Blaisdell, starring Tallulah Bankhead and Stefanie Powers. In 1973, Matheson earned an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for his teleplay for The Night Stalker, one of two TV movies written by Matheson and directed by Dan Curtis. Matheson worked extensively with Curtis.
Where Is Everybody?
"Where Is Everybody?" is the first episode of the American anthology television series The Twilight Zone. It was broadcast on October 2, 1959 on CBS. A man finds himself alone on a dirt road dressed in a U. S. Air Force flight suit, having no memory of how he got there, he finds a diner and walks in to find a jukebox playing loudly and a hot pot of coffee on the stove, but there are no other people besides himself. He accidentally breaks a clock, upon which the jukebox stops playing; the man walks toward a nearby town. Like the diner, the rest of the town seems deserted, but the man seems to find evidence of someone being there recently; the man grows unsettled as he wanders through the empty town, needing someone to talk to but at the same time feeling that he is being watched. In a soda shop, the man notices an entire spinning rack of paperback books titled The Last Man on Earth, Feb. 1959. As night falls, the lights in the park turn on, leading the man to a movie theater, the marquee of, illuminated.
He remembers he is an Air Force soldier from Battle Hymn. When the film begins onscreen, he runs to the projection booth and finds nobody there becomes more paranoid that he is being watched. Running through the streets in a panic, the man hits a pedestrian call button; the call button is revealed to be a panic button: the man, whose name is given as Sgt. Mike Ferris, is in an isolation booth being observed by a group of uniformed servicemen, he has been undergoing tests to determine his fitness as an astronaut and whether he can handle a prolonged trip to the Moon alone, though the town was a hallucination caused by sensory deprivation. The officiating general warns Ferris that while his basic needs will be provided for in space travel, he will not have companionship: "next time be alone". Ferris is carried from the hangar on a stretcher as he tells the Moon in the sky not to "go away up there", reminding himself of the loneliness he faces. Earl Holliman as Mike Ferris James Gregory as General Garry Walberg as Colonel Serling's original pilot for The Twilight Zone was "The Happy Place", which revolved around a society in which people were executed upon reaching the age of 60, being considered no longer useful.
CBS executive William Self rejected the story, feeling it was too dark. Unlike other episodes, which were filmed at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, "Where is Everybody?" was filmed at Universal. The episode featured Westbrook Van Voorhis as narrator; when Voorhis was unavailable for episodes, Serling re-recorded the narration himself for consistency. Serling notably changed the opening narration to place the Twilight Zone within the fifth dimension, among other alterations. Serling adapted "Where is Everybody?" for a novelization titled Stories From the Twilight Zone. Serling grew dissatisfied with the lack of science fiction content and changed the story to include Ferris discovering a movie ticket in his pocket while on the stretcher. A variation on this plotline was used in the episode "King Nine Will Not Return"; the New York Times praised the episode, saying that Serling proved "that science cannot foretell what may be the effect of total isolation on a human being", though " resolution... seemed trite and anticlimactic.
In the desultory field of filmed half-hour drama, however, Mr. Serling should not have much trouble in making his mark. At least his series promises to be different. Charles Beaumont praised the episode in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science-Fiction, writing that he "read Serling's first script... Old stuff? Of course. I thought so at the time... but there was one element in the story which kept me from my customary bitterness. The element was quality. Quality shone on every page, it shone in the scene set-ups. A Stop at Willoughby
"A Stop at Willoughby" is episode 30 of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling cited this as his favorite story from the first season of the series. Gart Williams is a contemporary New York City advertising executive who has grown exasperated with his career, his overbearing boss, Oliver Misrell, angered by the loss of a major account, lectures him about this "push-push-push" business. Unable to sleep properly at home, he drifts off for a short nap on the train during his daily commute through the November snow, he wakes to find the train stopped and his car now a 19th-century railway car, deserted except for himself. The sun is bright outside, as he looks out the window, he discovers that the train is in a town called Willoughby and that it's July 1888, he learns that this is a "peaceful, restful place, where a man can slow down to a walk and live his life full measure." Being jerked back awake into the real world, he asks the conductor if he has heard of Willoughby, but the conductor replies, "Not on this run...no Willoughby on the line."
That night, he has another argument with his shrewish wife Jane. Selfish and uncaring, she makes him see that he is only a money machine to her, he tells her about his dream and about Willoughby, only to have her ridicule him as being "born too late", declaring it her "miserable tragic error" to have married a man "whose big dream in life is to be Huckleberry Finn." The next week, Williams again dozes off on the train and returns to Willoughby where everything is the same as before. As he is about to get off the train carrying his briefcase, the train begins to roll, returning him to the present. Williams promises himself to get off at Willoughby next time. Experiencing a breakdown at work, he calls his wife. On his way home, once again he falls asleep to find himself in Willoughby; this time, as the conductor warmly beckons him to the door, Williams intentionally leaves his briefcase on the train. Getting off the train, he is greeted by name by various inhabitants who welcome him while he tells them he's glad to be there and plans to stay and join their idyllic life.
The swinging pendulum of the station clock fades into the swinging lantern of a train engineer, standing over Williams' body. The 1960 conductor explains to the engineer that Williams "shouted something about Willoughby", before jumping off the train and was killed instantly. Williams' body is loaded into a hearse; the back door of the hearse closes to reveal the name of the funeral home: Son. The "Stamford" and the "Westport/Saugatuck" stops called out by the conductor in the episode exist in real life – Metro-North Railroad stops in Fairfield County, include Stamford and the Westport station serves the town of Westport, where series creator Rod Serling once lived. Gart Williams' home phone number of Capital 7-9899 is a legitimate telephone exchange in Westport. "Beautiful Dreamer", a popular song in Ohio at the time, can be heard being played by a band in the episode. The 2000 TV movie For All Time starring Mark Harmon was based on this episode. Willoughby, Ohio, is the only town with that name in all of the United States, but there is a street called'Willoughby Avenue' within the greater Hollywood area, only a few miles from the Sony Pictures Studios where nearly all Twilight Zone episodes were shot.
Willoughby, Ohio calls its annual neighborhood festival "Last Stop: Willoughby" in honor of the episode. One of the last episodes of Thirtysomething pays homage to this episode, it has the same title, in it Michael experiences a crisis similar to that of Williams, though it does not end tragically. The character Willoughby in Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!!, is a Twilight Zone fanatic and owns every episode on VHS. He pays homage to the episode as he is 30 years old and skips from college to college under the false name of Willoughby so he can keep playing baseball and live the college lifestyle; the British electronic music outfit Funki Porcini sampled audio portions of “A Stop At Willoughby” on the song “The Deep” from their 1995 debut CD'Hed Phone Sex' on Shadow Records. In the TV series Stargate Atlantis episode, The Real World, Dr. Elizabeth Weir awakens in the Acute Care Unit of Willoughby State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital, she is told her memories of the last 2 years off-world was a fantasy and that she had imagined the Stargate project.
Matthew Weiner, creator of the TV series Mad Men, acknowledged the influence of The Twilight Zone on his work. Weiner said.
