Extended play

An extended play is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered less expensive, an EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, EPs—originally extended-play single releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk, in the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks. EPs were released in various sizes in different eras, the earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as 2-in-1 records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records, by 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 33 1⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side. Partly as an attempt to compete with the LP introduced in 1948 by rival Columbia, RCA Victor introduced Extended Play 45s during 1952. Their narrower grooves, achieved by lowering the levels and sound compression optionally. These were usually 10-inch LPs split onto two seven-inch EPs or 12-inch LPs split onto three seven-inch EPs, either separately or together in gatefold covers. This practice became less common with the advent of triple-speed-available phonographs. Some classical music albums released at the beginning of the LP era were distributed as EP albums—notably the seven operas that Arturo Toscanini conducted on radio between 1944 and 1954. These opera EPs, originally broadcast on the NBC Radio network and manufactured by RCA, in the 1990s, they began appearing on compact discs. During the 1950s, RCA published several EP albums of Walt Disney movies and these usually featured the original casts of actors and actresses. Each album contained two seven-inch records, plus an illustrated booklet containing the text of the recording, so that children could follow along by reading. Some of the titles included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and what was then a recent release, because of the popularity of 7 and other formats, SP records became less popular and the production of SPs in Japan was suspended in 1963. In the 1950s and 1960s, EPs were usually compilations of singles or album samplers and were played at 45 rpm on seven-inch discs. Record Retailer printed the first EP chart in 1960, the New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Disc and Music Echo and the Record Mirror continued to list EPs on their respective singles charts. The Beatles Twist and Shout outsold most singles for some weeks in 1963, when the BBC and Record Retailer commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile a chart it was restricted to singles and EPs disappeared from the listings. In the Philippines, seven-inch EPs marketed as mini-LPs were introduced in 1970, with tracks selected from an album and this mini-LP format also became popular in America in the early 1970s for promotional releases, and also for use in jukeboxes

Coil (band)

Coil were an English cross-genre, experimental music group formed in 1982 by John Balance—later credited as Jhonn Balance—and his life partner and collaborator Peter Christopherson, aka Sleazy. The duo worked together on a series of releases before Balance chose the name Coil, today, Coil remains one of the most influential and best-known industrial music groups. The groups first official release as Coil was a 198412 album titled How to Destroy Angels released on the Belgian Les Disques du Crépuscules sublabel LAYLAH Antirecords. In 1985, the group working on a series of soundtracks, among them music for the first Hellraiser movie based on the novel The Hellbound Heart by their acquaintance at that time. The groups first live performance in 16 years occurred in 1999, following the death of John Balance on 13 November 2004, Christopherson announced via their official record label website Threshold House that Coil as an entity had ceased to exist. Coil was formed in 1982 and became a concern in 1984. Balance and Christopherson began working with John Gosling on the project Zos Kia, which resulted in four live performances, following the underground hit How to Destroy Angels, Coil left L. A. Y. L. A. H. Antirecords for Some Bizzare Records and produced Scatology, released in 1984 as their first full-length studio album, the album was largely based on the sound of industrial music as well as the Post-punk movement. While songs such as Restless Day, Panic and Tainted Love are representative of a mainstream style, the single Panic/Tainted Love became the first AIDS benefit music release, as the profits from sales of the single were donated to the Terrence Higgins Trust. The Tainted Love music video, directed by Christopherson, is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Horse Rotorvator followed in 1986 as the next full-length release. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse killed their horses and use their jawbones to make this huge earth-moving machine, the artwork features a photograph of the location of a notorious IRA bombing, in which a bomb was detonated on a military orchestra pavilion. Horse Rotorvator was in part influenced by the AIDS related deaths of some of their friends. Furthermore, the song Ostia, is about the death of Pier Paolo Pasolini, as well as what Balance described as the number one suicide spot in the world. After the release of Horse Rotorvator, Coil left Some Bizzare Records, the 13-track Unnatural History compilation was then released on Threshold House in 1990. The first three songs on the album were first released as one half of the Nightmare Culture mini-album, loves Secret Domain followed in 1991 as the next proper Coil album, although a few minor releases had been produced since Horse Rotorvator. LSD represents a progression in Coils style and became a template for what would be representative of newer waves of post-industrial music, blended with their own style of acid house. Although the album was upbeat, it was not intended as a dance record, as Christopherson explained I wouldnt say its a party atmosphere. Windowpane and a Jack Dangers remix of The Snow were released as singles, the video for Windowpane was shot in the Golden Triangle, where, Balance claimed, the original Thai and Burmese drug barons used to exchange opium for gold bars with the CIA

Experimental music

The practice became prominent in the mid-20th century, particularly in North America. John Cage was one of the earliest composers to use the term and one of experimental musics primary innovators, utilizing indeterminacy techniques and seeking unknown outcomes. Also, in America, a distinct sense of the term was used in the late 1950s to describe computer-controlled composition associated with composers such as Lejaren Hiller. Harry Partch as well as Ivor Darreg worked with other tuning scales based on the laws for harmonic music. For this music they developed a group of experimental musical instruments. Musique concrète, is a form of music that utilises acousmatic sound as a compositional resource. Elements of experimental music include indeterminate music, in which the composer introduces the elements of chance or unpredictability with regard to either the composition or its performance. The Groupe de Recherches de Musique Concrète, under the leadership of Pierre Schaeffer, publication of Schaeffers manifesto was delayed by four years, by which time Schaeffer was favoring the term recherche musicale, though he never wholly abandoned musique expérimentale. John Cage was also using the term as early as 1955, according to Cages definition, an experimental action is one the outcome of which is not foreseen, and he was specifically interested in completed works that performed an unpredictable action. Rebners lecture extended the concept back in time to include Charles Ives, Edgard Varèse, nyman opposes experimental music to the European avant-garde of the time, for whom The identity of a composition is of paramount importance. David Cope also distinguishes between experimental and avant garde, describing music as that which represents a refusal to accept the status quo. That is, for the most part, experimental music studies describes a category without really explaining it and this was an attempt to marginalize, and thereby dismiss various kinds of music that did not conform to established conventions. In 1955, Pierre Boulez identified it as a new definition makes it possible to restrict to a laboratory. He concludes, There is no such thing as experimental music … and it is therefore not a genre, but an open category, because any attempt to classify a phenomenon as unclassifiable and elusive as experimental music must be partial. Furthermore, the indeterminacy in performance guarantees that two versions of the same piece will have virtually no perceptible musical facts in common. The term experimental music was used contemporaneously for electronic music, particularly in the early musique concrète work of Schaeffer, a number of early 20th-century American composers, seen as precedents to and influences on John Cage, are sometimes referred to as the American Experimental School. These include Charles Ives, Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger, Henry Cowell, Carl Ruggles, for this music they both developed custom-built musical instruments often characterized as experimental instruments. Raster-Noton

Raster-Noton is a German electronic music record label established in 1999. Based in Chemnitz, Germany, it emerged from the fusion of Rastermusik, founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996, and Noton, a sublabel which was run by Carsten Nicolai. Archiv für ton und nichtton” is meant to be a platform — a network covering the border areas of pop, art. It realizes music projects, publications and installation works, a common idea behind all releases is an experimental approach — an amalgamation of sound, art and design, which is not only apparent in the music, but also visible from the artwork and cover design. The collective labels aesthetic focus is on rhythmic, minimal electronic music alternating between playful pop and introspection,20 to 2000 is a monthly series of twelve CDs released over the course of 1999, with each months artist contributing a 20-minute project expressing possibly a manifest of the millennium. Each disc was packaged in a plastic slipcase with a hollow core. A separate kit containing twelve magnets fit into the core and allowed the individual discs to be joined into one set and this series received the Golden Nica award from Ars Electronica in 2000. Record producer

A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic in central-western Europe. It includes 16 constituent states, covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres, with about 82 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state of the European Union. After the United States, it is the second most popular destination in the world. Germanys capital and largest metropolis is Berlin, while its largest conurbation is the Ruhr, other major cities include Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Leipzig. Various Germanic tribes have inhabited the northern parts of modern Germany since classical antiquity, a region named Germania was documented before 100 AD. During the Migration Period the Germanic tribes expanded southward, beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation, in 1871, Germany became a nation state when most of the German states unified into the Prussian-dominated German Empire. After World War I and the German Revolution of 1918–1919, the Empire was replaced by the parliamentary Weimar Republic, the establishment of the national socialist dictatorship in 1933 led to World War II and the Holocaust. After a period of Allied occupation, two German states were founded, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, in 1990, the country was reunified. In the 21st century, Germany is a power and has the worlds fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP. As a global leader in industrial and technological sectors, it is both the worlds third-largest exporter and importer of goods. Germany is a country with a very high standard of living sustained by a skilled. It upholds a social security and universal health system, environmental protection. Germany was a member of the European Economic Community in 1957. It is part of the Schengen Area, and became a co-founder of the Eurozone in 1999, Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the G8, the G20, and the OECD. The national military expenditure is the 9th highest in the world, the English word Germany derives from the Latin Germania, which came into use after Julius Caesar adopted it for the peoples east of the Rhine. This in turn descends from Proto-Germanic *þiudiskaz popular, derived from *þeudō, descended from Proto-Indo-European *tewtéh₂- people, the discovery of the Mauer 1 mandible shows that ancient humans were present in Germany at least 600,000 years ago. International Standard Book Number

The International Standard Book Number is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned on or after 1 January 2007, the method of assigning an ISBN is nation-based and varies from country to country, often depending on how large the publishing industry is within a country. The initial ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering created in 1966, the 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108. Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure, however, this can be rectified later. Another identifier, the International Standard Serial Number, identifies periodical publications such as magazines, the ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 in the United Kingdom by David Whitaker and in 1968 in the US by Emery Koltay. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108, the United Kingdom continued to use the 9-digit SBN code until 1974. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978, an SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prefixing the digit 0. For example, the edition of Mr. J. G. Reeder Returns, published by Hodder in 1965, has SBN340013818 -340 indicating the publisher,01381 their serial number. This can be converted to ISBN 0-340-01381-8, the check digit does not need to be re-calculated, since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland European Article Number EAN-13s. John Balance

He was responsible for vocals, lyrics, chants, synthetics and various esoteric sound-making instruments and devices. Outside of Coil he collaborated with Nurse with Wound, Death in June, Psychic TV, Current 93, Chris & Cosey, Thighpaulsandra and his early work and wide-ranging collaborations made him one of the most influential figures in the industrial, experimental minimalist and neofolk music scenes. Balance first recorded using the alias Merderwerkers, the Merderwerkers track, Blue Funk, was included on the Sterile Records cassette compilation Standard Response. Balance also published a zine, Stabmental, and released a track, A Thin Veil of Blood. A Thin Veil of Blood was included on the cassette compilation Deleted Funtime – Various Tunes for Various Loons, Balance then joined up with Peter Christopherson and Boyd Rice to record Nightmare Culture under the moniker The Sickness of Snakes. Balance subsequently joined Psychic TV and performed alongside Christopherson, however in 1984, Balance, a short collaboration with Zos Kia produced the split tape Transparent. Credit for the album was shared, and marked Coils first release, the original Coil / Zos Kia tape, Transparent, was released as a His-Storical CD reissue in 1997. Peter Christopherson

Peter Martin Christopherson was a musician, video director, commercial artist, designer and photographer, and former member of British design agency Hipgnosis. He was one of the members of the Industrial Records band Throbbing Gristle. After the disbandment of Throbbing Gristle, he participated in the formation of Psychic TV along with Genesis P-Orridge, Christopherson participated in the reunification of Throbbing Gristle and, after his relocation to Thailand in 2005, composed an album for his solo endeavour The Threshold HouseBoys Choir. Christopherson died in his sleep on 25 November 2010, Christopherson was born on 27 February 1955 in Leeds, UK. His father, Derman Christopherson, was a professor of engineering who became master of Magdalene College, Cambridge prior to receiving a knighthood. Following school, Christopherson studied computer programming, theatre design and video at the State University of New York at Buffalo in New York, Christopherson was a founding member of Throbbing Gristle, who are credited with creating the industrial music genre before disbanding in 1981. Throbbing Gristle members Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti formed their own group, while Christopherson, Balance met Christopherson as a Throbbing Gristle fan and the two became intimate partners. Christopherson worked on the first two Psychic TV albums, Force the Hand of Chance and Dreams Less Sweet, joined by Balance on the latter, the two performed live several times with Psychic TV prior to forming their own project Coil. Strictly a recording project, Coil consisted of Christopherson and Balance, while Steven E. Thrower occasionally played bass guitar, Balance was the lyricist and also played Chapman Stick and some keyboards. In 1987, Christopherson explained the sound of Coil, A ‘big movie theater’ ambience, we’ve always liked movies about Turkish prisons and Roman galleys. Most contemporary music draws its imagery from the past 30 years, but there’s a whole wealth of imagery from earlier times that’s fascinating to draw from. Over two decades, Coil released a myriad of recordings, in addition to contributing to the work of other artists and they recorded parts of the album The New Backwards at Nothing Studios in New Orleans, US, owned by musician Trent Reznor at the time. In the liner notes of the 2008 CD release, Christopherson wrote, Thanks to everyone there, despite Christophersons long and extensive history as a musical artist, he only released two tracks under the name Peter Christopherson. In 2005, following the death of Balance, Christopherson relocated from England to Bangkok, Thailand and he also released the final Coil CDs—The Remote Viewer, Black Antlers. And The Ambulance Died in His Arms and The New Backwards—on the bands own Threshold House label. Throbbing Gristle also reformed for a few concerts in 2005 and announced a new album called Part Two, the group announced several additional concerts in 2007 for the promotion of the album. In 2007 Christopherson released the album of The Threshold HouseBoys Choir. The album, Form Grows Rampant, consists of five parts or songs, One tour promoter who organized a Threshold HouseBoys Choir concert described it as easily the most shocking thing I have ever experienced. In 2008 Christopherson and Ivan Pavlov started a new project called Soisong, the band officially premiered in Tokyo on 9 March 2008 and later performed several shows in Europe, having self-released their debut EP

Thighpaulsandra
–
Thighpaulsandra is a Welsh experimental musician and multi-instrumentalist known mostly for performing on synthesizers and keyboards. As Tim Lewis, he began his working with Julian Cope. A collaboration with Cope in 1993 followed, as the experimental duo Queen Elizabeth and this project completed just the two albums, Queen Elizabeth and Elizabeth Vagina, each containing extremely long spacey tracks of between 20–47 minutes in duration. In 1997, former Cope guitarist Mike Mooney invited Lewis to fill for the departing Kate Radley on a Spiritualized tour, in 1999 he also became a member of the experimental band Coil. He has subsequently released solo albums. Beginning his career in the early 1980s with the metal band Temper Temper, Lewis next became the house engineer. Living in S. Wales, Lewis was at first unable to capitalise on his influences, such as krautrock. Eventually, his work with Julian Cope provided the right atmosphere, Thighpaulsandra can be heard on the records Live at the Albert Hall, Let It Come Down, Amazing Grace and Songs in A&E. He also joined Coil the next year and performed on albums as Astral Disaster, Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.1. During the same period, Thighpaulsandra also worked on The Waterboys album A Rock in the Weary Land, the artwork for his Double Vulgar album caused some controversy with several printers not willing to reproduce the controversial imagery. Double Vulgar II was delayed, possibly for the reason, along with the passing of friend. His first three solo releases came out via the Coil label, Eskaton, London based Austrian photographer Ruth Bayer took the front cover image for I, Thighpaulsandra. Bayer was the photographer for many of the first London Coil shows. In September 2013 he joined Wire on their UK and European tours playing keyboards, after a hiatus from solo work, Thighpaulsandra released The Golden Communion in 2015. Scatology (album)

Scatology is the debut longplay by British experimental band Coil, first released in 1984. Scatology was released in three different formats with two different covers, for the original LP release, the black sun design that was first put on was pasted over by a postcard with a swirling and descending staircase known as the Anal Staircase. The second edition had the Sexual Architecture postcard pasted on random covers with uncovered ones revealing the black sun design. The CD edition featured a cover with the title of the album, -4,24 Godhead=Deathead -5,16 Cathedral in Flames -4,39 Tainted Love -5,53 The version of Spoiler is not the same as the 12 release. Horse Rotorvator

Horse Rotorvator is the second full-length studio album released by the British industrial group Coil. It was ranked 73 by Pitchfork Media in its list of the Top 100 Albums of the 1980s, although Coil did officially release this album on cassette, it was once again pirated in cassette form by both Stable Records and ArsNova Records, which hail from Russia. The song Who by Fire was written by Leonard Cohen, originally appearing on his album New Skin for the Old Ceremony, all songs written by John Balance and Peter Christopherson, except where noted. S. Silk and Acapulco March are the titles for Slur and Herald. Ravenous and are from The Anal Staircase 12 single, and are not listed on the tape card, sometimes the listing on the cover and the actual running order differ as a result

Gold Is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders)

Gold Is the Metal was the third album released by Coil in the year 1987. It is not a proper follow-up to 1986s Horse Rotorvator, but more a collection of outtakes and demos from the Scatology, Horse Rotorvator, some obviously correspond to earlier and later released material, while others do not appear anywhere else. The Last Rites Of Spring includes a sample by Stravinsky, also used extensively in The Anal Staircase, the musicians involved in this album were, John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Stephen Thrower, Alex Fergusson, Jim Thirlwell, Billy McGee, and Andrew Poppy. The standard 12 was released by the label Threshold House with the catalogue number LOCI1, the first edition was pressed on red vinyl. The second edition was black and the third was transparent, in addition,25 copies on red vinyl were released with an unfinished sleeve. The first initial copies of this album were shipped with the free 7 singles The Wheel/The Wheal, the Wheel/The Wheal was believed to be shipped with the first 500 copies, then The Wheal/Keelhauler with an unknown additional copies. A special art edition of the 12 was released in an edition of 55 under the Threshold House label with the catalogue number LOCI3, in 1988, the album was also released on CD by the labels Normal and Threshold House. The Normal release had a number of NORMAL77 and was released in the Netherlands. The Threshold House release had a number of LOCI1 and was released in the United Kingdom. A Total of 1,000 numbered copies were produced during this pressing, the last three tracks have indexing problems. In 1996 the album was repressed under the label Threshold House with catalogue number LOCI CD11, the artwork for this release is entirely different for this album. The album is subtitled Returning to the Purity of the Current and this version still suffers from indexing problems. In 2006, the 1996 version of the album was available for download at Coils official site, thresholdhouse. com, in aac, mp3. This album is available for download. Loves Secret Domain is the third album by Coil and was released in 1991. The album marked a departure from the brooding synthesizers and melodies of their first two albums, focusing more on acid house sampling, the singles released from the album were Windowpane and The Snow. Guest vocalists include Marc Almond on Titan Arch and Annie Anxiety on Things Happen, a working title for the album was The Side Effects of Life. Loves Secret Domain was later remastered by Thighpaulsandra with slightly different track lengths, the album is currently available for purchasing in AAC, MP3, and FLAC formats at Coils official website. The song Disco Hospital was covered by Matmos on their EP California Rhinoplasty, lyrics of the song Loves Secret Domain borrow from the song In Dreams, In dreams I walk with you / In dreams I talk to you / In dreams youre mine / All the time. Stolen & Contaminated Songs was the first of two albums recorded and produced by the band Coil in 1992. This CD includes outtakes and unreleased songs from Loves Secret Domain album, the first edition had a different cover and came without info of any kind, except for a small numbered flyer stating This is stolen and contaminated songs. Some copies have a sticker on the back of the CD jewel box with the band name, album title, track list, an address for World Serpent Distribution. The later release changed the titles of all of the songs from this edition, although track one is listed as Futher its actual title is supposed to be Further, as the track is a variation on Further Back and Faster from the Loves Secret Domain sister album. After the final track there is a period of silence before a hidden piece. An alternate version of Wholl Fall. was released as Is Suicide a Solution, on the single Airborne Bells/Is Suicide A Solution. The song Omlagus Garfungiloops features excerpts of dialogue from the 1990 cult film The Reflecting Skin and this album is currently available in AAC, MP3 and FLAC formats from Coils official website, Thresholdhouse. com. Astral Disaster is an album by Coil, which has been released in two distinct versions. The original pressing of the album was released in an edition of 99 copies on 12 vinyl via the record label Acme/Prescription with catalogue number Drug 8. It was available only to those who had subscribed to the entire Drug series and it included an insert with the track listing and release notes, and a piece of handmade artwork in a plastic zip-lock bag. The later pressing of album, released on CD and 12 via the Threshold House label, is completely rebuilt. This version also includes a remake of The Mothership & The Fatherland titled MÜ-ÜR, the 12 inch release was limited to 1,000 copies on gray vinyl and a special edition of 100 copies on red vinyl. The special edition includes a sheet of lyrics that is signed by Jhon Balance, Peter Christopherson and it also includes an original numbered drawing, which is signed by Jhon Balance and Peter Christopherson. The album is themed on mankinds pollution of the seas for commerce. The majority of the album was recorded in an area below the level of the Thames River, the Avatars was made with a Syrinx synthesiser, and was John Balances attempt to recreate memories of sneaking through his house at night to watch Bernard Quatermass series on television. The title of the song comes from a book by George Russell, second Son Syndrome was purposely renamed 2nd Sun Syndrome on reissue. Most of the lyrics to The Sea Priestess were based on Aleister Crowleys descriptions of the murals on the walls of the Abbey of Thelema at Cefalu in Sicily

It is unusual in the sense that it is perhaps the only release without participation from Peter Christopherson, on this album, Coil were, Thighpaulsandra & John Balance with Dorothy Lewis as the queen of the circulating library. The lyrics were written by John Balance and spoken by Dorothy Lewis, the album was initially released on the date of the Coil Presents Time Machines concert. Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.2 is an album by Coil currently in its third pressing in CD format, it was also released in double 12 vinyl format. Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.2 was the second of two albums attributed purely to a style called moon musick, which signify their change from a group to a moon group. Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.1 was the first installment, an Emergency is sung by Rose McDowall. The lyrics of Batwings have many references to Musaeum Clausum written by Sir Thomas Browne and this song was also played at John Balances funeral service and Peter Christopherson described it as a language that only he knows. The first 1,000 mail-order copies of the CD came with Coil Presents Time Machines as a bonus, four different versions of this album were pressed onto two 12 vinyl records, A standard edition limited to 1300 numbered copies. A special edition limited to 50 copies with one light blue record, the records themselves have plain white labels, with gold leaf attached to the label on side four. A special Trauma edition is said to be limited to 26 copies and it was pressed white vinyl with plain white covers smeared with John Balances own blood during a psychotic/demonic episode. These also contain the cover picture and prints from the amethyst edition listed above, initially, only 11 copies were to be sold with the remainder being held by Coil in their personal archive, but the edition was expanded due to high demand. This album was recorded by Peter Christopherson, Jhonn Balance, Thighpaulsandra, the phrase The key to joy is disobedience, there is no guilt, there is no shame is whispered at the beginning of Batwings. Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil is a CD by Coil, released the same year as Queens of the Circulating Library. Like Queens, this album comes packaged in a pink c-shell case, according to the credits, Coil were Thighpaulsandra, John Balance, & Peter Christopherson. The track names provided are Higher Beings Command, I Am the Green Child, Beige, Lowest Common Abominator, Free Base Chakra, the track listing is rather mysterious as it only lists six tracks while 23 tracks are actually pressed on the CD. The release is unique in Coils catalog for several things not unusual to the band separately, It is very noisy and nearly devoid of conventional instruments and vocals. John Balances singing appears only on I Am the Green Child and minimally on Tunnel of Goats, however, their live act prominently featured Edwardss playing and, unlike the original, the live version of Higher Beings Command does include vocals. The following warning appears after the listing, May Cause Drowsiness - Do Not Play While Driving Or Operating Machinery. The catalogue number is ESKATON24, Coil Presents Time Machines has the similar catalog number of ESKATON CD24. Tracks 6 through 21 are continuations as well, track 22 is silent, except for the beginning which is an extension from track 21. Track 23 features John Balance laughing with echo effects applied to his voice, starting at 1,57 of track 10, through track 12, Balance can be heard singing in the right channel. Moons Milk Bonus Disc is a semi-official name for an edition of Coil CD-Rs released in conjunction with Moons Milk. Each CD sleeve was hand painted and given its own unique title, most of the sleeves were numbered, followed by the title, then 2001 ev. Winter Solstice - December 21,2001 ev. or something similar, most of the titles have quotations around them. This official CD-R was originally available with a special order of Moons Milk which cost $85 more than the two cd set. Additional copies were available later separately. The later ones were said to be the ones that Jhonn Balance kept because he favored them. However, most of the later ones did not include a signed polaroid as the set did. The numbered edition is believed to be between 1 and three hundred, with repeating numbers, an approximate 33 of the Bonus Discs comprise the unnumbered edition. Black Antlers is a studio album by the experimental band Coil. It was originally released in CD-R format in 2004 in an edition and was sold during their Even an Evil Fatigue mini-tour. The album was later re-edited by Peter Christopherson and expanded to include a second CD of two new tracks, as well as a new track on the first disc, the second edition was released in August 2006 on the same day as the expanded version of The Remote Viewer. Both reissues were mastered by Mark Godwin, printed in Thailand and feature high quality images, although the original edition did not include a catalogue number, the reissue was given a catalogue number of THBKK2. Both reissues are currently available at the official Coil website, thresholdhouse. com, All songs from the original pressing of the album were played live around the time of this release. The Gimp was originally released as a recording by Coil on the compilation Hate People Like Us featuring remixes, the original version was titled The Gimp/Sometimes and sounds much less developed than the version on Black Antlers. The lyrics to this also appeared in an untitled live piece performed at New Forms III in 2002. Sex with Sun Ra had been mentioned by Coil for many years before appearing on Black Antlers. A version of Sex with Sun Ra, titled simply Sex with Sun Ra, later appeared on the compilation Rough Trade Shops, the version on the compilation is 6,00 in length. The track was written about eccentric jazz musician Sun Ra, Wraiths and Strays is from a live performance on 29 May 2003, in Montreal, Canada at Mutek 2003. The Wraiths and Strays of Paris is a version of a live performance in Paris. The key difference between the two versions is that the Mutek performance features only Christopherson and Thighpaulsandra while the Paris recording features the full touring line-up, the song is built around a sample of the track Montparnesse by King of Woolworths which was initially used without permission. All The Pretty Little Horses is a lullaby that was brought to light on the Current 93 album All The Pretty Little Horses. Balance provided vocals for three tracks on album and often introduced the song live as being from my friends album. Teenage Lightning is a version of the songs Teenage Lightning 1, the version of the song as it appears on Black Antlers is similar to the version on The Ape of Naples titled Teenage Lightning 2005. Black Antlers is a cover of the 1988 acid house track Wheres Your Child. by Bam Bam, coils studio recording is instrumental but when performing the song live, Balance sang the vocal parts from the Bam Bam version

The Ape of Naples is the final album from Coil. The album compiles material from 1993 to 2004 assembled and reworked in 2005 by Peter Christopherson and it was released after the death of lead vocalist John Balance, who died on 13 November 2004. The title of album was originally intended to be Fire of the Mind. Several tracks from the abortive Nothing Records album Backwards are included here, the last song on the album is a cover version of the theme song from the BBC show, Are You Being Served. Which utilises Balances last ever words spoken on stage live at the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival in 2004 and this album was originally pressed as a digipak in the UK, but due to the low quality of the printing, it was repressed in Thailand. A 4X12 edition was released by Important Records in late February 2008 and this has also been released on CD and as a digital download from Threshold House with three extra tracks. Copies of the 4x12 sold by Threshold House include a copy of The New Backwards CD. Its In My Blood is a reworking of A. Y. O. R. Which was originally distributed on the demo collection Backwards, later released on Пособие для кончающих, Волос Злата. Cold Cell was originally released in form as A Cold Cell on the Wire Magazine compilation release Wire Tapper 6. Teenage Lightning 2005 is a reworking of the songs Teenage Lightning 1 and Teenage Lightning 2 from one of their earlier albums, a version of Teenage Lightning very similar to the one on this album appeared on Black Antlers as Teenage Lightning. Going Up is a version of the Are You Being Served theme tune. François Testorys vocals are from a studio recording whereas Jhonns are from a bootleg of the last live Coil concert in 2004, limited edition copies came with a copy of The New Backwards as a fourth piece of vinyl

The New Backwards is an album by Coil released in 2008. These remixes were made by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in Bangkok in 2007, the album was originally released on 12 vinyl as part of a box set reissue of the album The Ape of Naples. It is currently available on 12 vinyl, compact disc, and downloads in FLAC, aac, the origin of the source of Backwards is believed to have been a leak of the studio demo, in the form of a cassette. However, the demo was broadcast when Dutch Radio4, a radio station in Amsterdam, had Coil as in studio guests to coincide with a live performance on the date of 2001 June 1. The program was broadcast on 2001 June 18 and a four disc CD-R set of the entire broadcast, although part of the proposed album was eventually released as The Ape Of Naples, the material is so augmented that there are very few recognizable samples. The proposed release on Nothing Records was continuously put off, Simenon and Bee Has Photos are built largely on the foundation of the song Protection, which was released on the single Born Again Pagans. However the version from Songs of the Week is an alternate version, on the live Coil album, Live Three, a song called Backwards is performed. This song is an incarnation of the songs Simenon and Bee Has Photos, other proposed titles are also possibly referenced by this material

Coil Presents Time Machines was a live CD by Coil. This CD was produced in an amount of 1,000 copies and was given away with the initial mail orders of Musick To Play In The Dark Vol.2. The CD is a performance which took place on April 2,2000 at the Cornucopia festival in the Royal Festival Hall in London. The name of the performance was Time Machines from the Heart of Darkness, the album was later reissued as CD A on Live One in an unaltered form. Everything Keeps Dissolving and Chasms appear on CD B of Live One as well, however Chasms is titled Blue Chasms. Neither of these songs have had a studio release. The lyrics for Chasms are every man and woman is a star, Circulating is a shortened live version of Queens Of The Circulating Library. John Balance, Peter Christopherson, Simon Norris, and Thighpaulsandra are credited as performance members, dorothy Lewis, Thighpaulsandras mothers vocals can be heard on the song Queens Of The Circulating Library. Live In Moscow is a VHS of a video recording of Coil. The live performance took place on 15 September 2001 at DK Gorbunova in Moscow and this video is exactly the same performance as Live Two. This release was given to attendees at Coils return to Moscow on September 26,2002, a box-set edition limited to 35 copies was available. It contained a copy of the video, a T-shirt, a poster, many unofficial bootlegs have surfaced on ebay. This represents Coils only official video release other than the ANS DVD, unlike the Live In NYC August 18,2001 VHS, this video does not include any bonus material. Live Four was a compilation CD of live Coil songs. This CD was the first of four releases in a series and its counterparts are Live Three, Live Two and Live One. This album was released as part of Coils box set The Key To Joy Is Disobedience. The performance dates for Bang Bang and An Unearthly Red were performed in Prague on 27 October 2002, I Am Angie Bowie, The Universe Is A Haunted House, Bang Bang and An Unearthly Red are songs that have never had a proper studio release. Last Rites Of Spring was originally released in form as The Last Rites Of Spring on the album Gold Is The Metal With The Broadest Shoulders. Are You Shivering. was originally released in form on the album Musick To Play In The Dark Vol.1. Amethyst Deceivers was originally released on the CD/7 single Autumn Equinox, the version of the song on this album is a slower and much more like The Last Amethyst Deceiver on The Ape Of Naples than the original version. A Warning From The Sun was originally released in form as A Warning From The Sun on the CD single Summer Solstice. Ostia was originally released in form on Ostia on the album Horse Rotorvator. The version of the song on album is much slower than the original. I Dont Want To Be The One was originally released in form as Astral Disaster. Bang Bang is a cover of an old song by Sonny Bono, the lyrics to An Unearthly Red allude to a statement made by George W. Bush saying, God told me to end the tyranny in Iraq. The song was released on a CD by Danny Hyde as An Unhealthy Red, on the back on the CD there is notice of an upcoming DVD and vinyl release of the compilation. Live One was a double live album released by Coil. This CD was the fourth of four releases in a series and its counterparts are Live Four, Live Three and Live Two. This album was released as part of Coils box set The Key To Joy Is Disobedience. CD A was originally released as Coil Presents Time Machines and it is a recording of a performance which took place on April 2,2000 at the Cornucopea festival in the Royal Festival Hall in London, England. CD B is a recording of a concert that took place at Sonar in Barcelona. The studio instrumental used during this performance has surfaced on the internet, the video for this show is also available on the Colour Sound Oblivion 16DVD set. Everything Keeps Dissolving, Blue Chasms and Elves are otherwise unreleased, however, Elves was widely circulated on the bootleg Backwards, in its original studio form, That version, however, is notably absent of Balances vocals. Circulating is a version of the song Queens Of The Circulating Library. Coil were, Jhon Balance, Peter Christopherson, Simon Norris, CD B features all of the same artists as CD A with the addition of William Breeze. This album is available in CD format at Coils official website. A track indexing error cuts The Universe Is a Haunted House off prematurely, there are sampled vocals elsewhere, however, as on both versions of Queens. and Chasms

Megalithomania. was an official CD-R release by Coil limited to a pressing of 230 copies,123 of which were available in their box set The Key To Joy Is Disobedience. It is a recording of their performance at the Megalithomania festival at Conway Hall in London. According to the credits, Coil were, Jhon Balance, Peter Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra, & Ossian Brown with Pierce and this performance consists of an extended performance of only one song, The Universe Is A Haunted House, which has never been released as a studio version. Selvaggina, Go Back into the Woods

Selvaggina, Go Back into the Woods was originally released in CD-R format by Coil in a limited edition of 230 copies. The release is a performance in Jesi, Italy on 11 June 2004. Selvaggina was released in an identical to that of Coil Presents Time Machines, Megalithomania. Tracks 1-3 and 5-7 were released as studio versions with slightly augmented titles on Black Antlers, Bang Bang has not been given a studio release by Coil. Tattooed Man was later remade and released on The Ape of Naples, the live version of Amethyst Deceivers on Selvaggina is most similar to the versions released on The Ape of Naples and Live Two. . And the Ambulance Died in His Arms was an album recorded live during Coils performance at All Tomorrows Parties on April 4,2003. This album was the last planned release by Coil before the death of John Balance, when the release was announced, Peter noted that Balance had already selected the title. A version of Triple Sun Introduction and Triple Sons and the One You Bury using the audio from this performance was reworked and released on The Ape Of Naples, a Slip in the Marylebone Road is a true story about John Balance being mugged and losing his precious green notebook. The Dreamer Is Still Asleep – The Somnambulist In An Ambulance is one of the more improvised live recordings of Coils performances, the song is a version of The Dreamer Is Still Asleep from Musick To Play In The Dark Vol.1

Live in Porto is the authorised bootleg of a live performance by Coil, which took place on June 21,2003 at the Casa da Musica Festival, Porto, Portugal. At this show, Coil were Peter Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra and Ossian Brown, jhonn Balance was too sick to attend, as in case of Montreal concert at MUTEK Festival. This limited edition bootleg in semi-transparent hand-made packaging came in six designs, white, black, red, blue, purple, each of these six edition was limited to 100 numbered copies, making 600 copies total. Last ones were available for sale via Threshold House website on February 1,2008, together with still available downloads in FLAC, aac. Jhonn Balance does not appear on this recording, so all five tracks are instrumental, blue Rats was originally released in studio form on A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room by Black Light District. Triple Sun was never recorded in studio, but it was played during Coil tournee. Its reworked version appears on The Ape of Naples, Radio Westin appeared as Wraiths and Strays on Black Antlers and Selvaggina, Go Back into the Woods. How to Destroy Angels is a remix album by Coil. All of the songs are remixes from the 12 single of the same name and it contains different versions and mixes of the song How To Destroy Angels, and features cover artwork by filmmaker Derek Jarman. The remixes were produced by John Balance, Peter Christopherson, the song Absolute Elsewhere is blank and silent, as it was originally released. It is portrayed in this release as a second of silence. Tracks 1,3, and 4 were remixed by John Balance, tracks 2 and 5 were remixed by Peter Christopherson. Track 6 was remixed by Steven Stapleton, the initial pressing of this release is affected by bronzing, a phenomenon common with pressings made by Philips Dupont Optical at that time. The surfaces of CDs affected with bronzing change colour from silver to bronze or gold, eventually rendering the CD unplayable. Unnatural History II was the second in a series of three compilation albums by Coil. Unlike Stolen & Contaminated Songs and Gold Is The Metal With The Broadest Shoulders, Red Weather originally appeared on the compilation cassette Bethel. Theme From Blue I and Theme From Blue II originally appeared on Themes for Derek Jarmans Blue, however Theme From Blue I is truncated 4 seconds and Theme From Blue II is combined with The Hills Are Alive due to a track indexing problem. Airborne Bells is from the Airborne Bells/Is Suicide a Solution, another Brown World is from the 12/CD compilation Myths 4 - Sinople Twilight In Catal Hüyük. Contains A Disclaimer is from the compilation Pathological Compilation, the Hellraiser Theme was released on The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser as Hellraiser. The Hellbound Heart and No New World were released on the CD version of The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser, the Box Theme was also released on The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser, as Box Theme. In Memory Of The Truth, Unquiet Rest, and Wait, vanishing Point was released on the CD version of The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser as Attack Of The Sennapods. The Main Title was released as Main Title on all versions of The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser, the Hills Are Alive was originally released on the compilation Macro Dub Infection Vol.1. Windowpane & The Snow was a CD released by the band Coil. This release compiles the two EPs, Windowpane and The Snow, the original versions of the songs Windowpane and The Snow appear on the album Loves Secret Domain. The Snow remix is credited to John Balance and Drew McDowall, the Snow and The Snow remixes are by Peter Christopherson. The Snow and The Snow were remixed by Jack Dangers, also known as Meat Beat Manifesto and these two remixes frequently repeat a sample of the introductory elephants from Jean-Michel Jarres Zoolook album, and prominently feature a house-style bass organ and breakbeat. Unlike Stolen & Contaminated Songs and Gold Is the Metal with the Broadest Shoulders, the album is subtitled Joyful Participation in the Sorrows of the World. First Dark Ride was originally released on the Coil vs, baby Food was originally released on the compilation Chaos in Expansion. Music for Commercials originally appeared on the 10″ & cassette versions of The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser, according to John Balance, Panic was mislabeled in the CD booklet as being the Dionysian remix, commenting, But then again, isnt everything Dionysian. Neither His nor Yours was originally released on the compilation A Diamond Hidden in the Mouth of a Corpse, feeder was originally released on the album Core - A Conspiracy International Project by Conspiracy International, a label run by Throbbing Gristle members Chris & Cosey. Wrong Eye and Scope were originally released on the 7 single Wrong Eye/Scope and these two songs were released along with Meaning What Exactly. On the compilation The Portable Altamont in 1993, Lost Rivers of London was originally released on the Ptolemaic Terrascope benefit compilation Succour. The song was remade and released as Londons Lost Rivers on the vinyl release of the Black Light District album A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room. John Balance and Peter Christopherson are credited for participating on all tracks, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti are credited for participating on track 6.
