The Newsreader is an Australian television drama series created by Michael Lucas and broadcast on ABC Television. Starring Anna Torv and Sam Reid, the series, which explores the personal and professional lives of journalists and crew within a 1980s Australian newsroom, premiered on 15 August 2021.
The Challenger launch and explosion (the latter pictured here) was the main news event focus of the first episode. Lucas talked of its significance to the news industry; "After [it], you saw that TV news was going to become the future. Satellite technology was capable of taking footage all around the world. And it was this incredible, ... horrible, tragic spectacle. But you couldn't turn away from it. And I think it marked a real change in that it pioneered that sense of rolling news, keeping it going throughout the day, breaking into your programming, just trusting that the audience is gonna keep on watching it."
Lawn signs outside a polling station for the October 2023 constitutional referendum on establishing a Voice to Parliament for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. Lucas remarked on how the fourth episode - which centres on the debate about recognition of Australia's original inhabitants during the country's celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first British settlers landing, and the media treatment of protests and views that run against such a buoyant mood - happened to have aired during the campaign period.
Fireworks over Sydney Harbour marking the end of Australia Day 1988, which included a re-enactment of the First Fleet sailing into the harbour. Preparations for the News at Six's coverage of the events was a pivotal narrative during the second series.
Reviewer James Croot compared Torv's portrayal of Helen Norville to that of character Murphy Brown in the eponymous American sitcom, played by Candice Bergen, seen here in 1993 during the show's original run.
