José Miguel Monzón Navarro, better known as El Gran Wyoming or Guayo, is a Spanish television presenter, actor, musician, director and humorist. He graduated in Medicine and was a doctor in the town of Buitrago del Lozoya for a period of time. He has hosted several programs such as Silencio se juega, La noche se mueve, the official reason given was low ratings of the program. In 1995 he returned to TV on the private channel Telecinco and he presented Caiga quien caiga from 1996 to 2002. La Buena Estrella is a 1997 Spanish drama film directed by Ricardo Franco and starring Antonio Resines, Jordi Mollá and Maribel Verdú. Critically acclaimed, the film won five Goya Awards, Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original script, Ricardo Franco made just one more film, he died of a heart attack in 1998. Rafael is a kind, good-hearted butcher and he has a lonely life after accidentally castrating himself while cutting meat several years before, but he longs to have a family life, a dream that seems unattainable for him. One early morning when he is driving his truck to his butcher’s shop, Rafael cannot help but intervene and jumps out of his vehicle to help her. Taking pity on the girl, he takes her to his home and her name is Marina and the man who was beating her was her boyfriend, Daniel. Marina, nicknamed One-Eye, tells Rafael how she and Daniel grew up together in an environment in an orphanage. Marina feels attach to Daniel, as they do not have anybody else, after knowing that Daniel is now in jail, Rafael proposes to Marina to take care of her and the baby. She gladly accepts his offer but warns him that Daniel sooner or later will come back, Marina and Rafael both grab the possibility to fulfill the impossible dream they once had to form a family. Rafael treats the troubled Marina with kindness and she responds by proving there is more than one way to be a man. In this way, the two find healing and happiness raising Marinas daughter, Estrella, that Rafael recognizes as his own, years later, their happiness is threatened by the sudden return of Daniel, fresh out of prison. He knocks on the one night, beaten and bleeding. He only wants a place to live, though he knows that Marina has strong, unresolved feelings for Daniel, Rafael does not want to lose her and reluctantly allows Daniel to stay for a few days that become weeks. With only lifetimes of strife in common, the three lonely, disaffected adults thus form an uneasy family, Marina is reluctant to be left alone with Daniel, is not he who she does not trust but her own feelings. Rafael to see her reaction goes to his house in the countryside. Rafael comes back soon unexpectedly finding Marina and Daniel together in bed and he initially wants them to leave but finally comes to accept an uncommon arrangement and the three of them remain together with their daughter forming an uneasy family. Daniel, who passes as Marina’s brother, helps Rafael in the Butcher’s shop and he finally leaves as Marina has said that he would do eventually. Nevertheless, not much later he is in trouble and Marina leaves to follow him, Rafael is now alone to take care of Estrella, the daughter. Time has gone by and watching the T. V news Rafael finds out that Daniel has been involved in a robbery with a band of criminals and is again in jail

Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem is a Spanish actor. Bardem won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the psychopathic assassin Anton Chigurh in the 2007 Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men. Bardem has also won a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BAFTA, five Goya Awards and he is the first Spanish actor to be nominated for an Oscar, as well as the first Spaniard to win one. He received his third Academy Award nomination, and second Best Actor nomination, Bardem was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. His mother, Pilar Bardem, is an actress, and his father, the two separated shortly after his birth. Both his older brother and sister, Carlos and Mónica, are actors and he also comes from a political background, as his uncle Juan Antonio was imprisoned by Franco for his anti-fascist films. Bardem was brought up in the Roman Catholic faith by his grandmother, as a child, he spent time at theatres and on film sets. At age six, he made his first film appearance, in Fernando Fernán Gómezs El Pícaro and he also played rugby for the junior Spanish National Team. Though he grew up in a full of actors, Bardem did not see himself going into the family business. Actually, painting was his first love and he went on to study painting for four years at Madrids Escuela de Artes y Oficios. In need of money he took acting jobs to support his painting, but he also says he was a bad painter and eventually abandoned that career pursuit. In 1989, for the Spanish comedy show El Día Por Delante, he had to wear a Superman costume for a comedic sketch, Bardem has confessed to having worked as a stripper during his struggling acting career. Bardem came to notice in a role in his first major motion picture, The Ages of Lulu. The film, which starred a teenaged Penélope Cruz, was a major international success. He then starred again in Lunas next film Golden Balls, Bardems talent did not go unnoticed in the English-speaking world. Live Flesh is a 1997 Spanish romantic drama thriller film, written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Liberto Rabal, Javier Bardem, and Francesca Neri. The film is based on Ruth Rendells book Live Flesh. The Franco regime has declared a state of emergency curtailing civil liberties, a young prostitute, Isabel Plaza Caballero, gives birth on a bus to a son she names Víctor. Twenty years later, Víctor Plaza shows up for a date with Elena, Elena is waiting for her drug dealer to arrive and orders Víctor to leave, eventually threatening him with a gun. Enraged, Víctor wrestles the gun from her, in the process Elena gets knocked out, a neighbour hears the shot and calls the police. Two cops respond to the report, the older cop, Sancho, is an unstable alcoholic who suspects his wife Clara of infidelity. The younger cop, David, more clean-cut and sober, through the window they catch sight of Víctor physically struggling with Elena. Sancho is ready to storm the apartment, while David wants to call for a back-up, when they enter, Víctor holds Elena hostage at gunpoint. David tries to him down and get him to drop his gun. Finally, David puts his gun to Sanchos head and gets first Sancho, Sancho then lunges for Víctor, and as they wrestle for the gun it fires. Two years later, Víctor, in jail, watches a wheelchair basketball match, David, now partially paralyzed from the gunshot two years earlier, is a star player in the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Elena, now his wife, cheers him on from the sidelines, Víctor has made good use of his time in jail, taking a correspondence course in education, working out, and enriching his mind with a variety of subjects, including the Bible. Four years later, he is released and his mother has died, leaving him some money and a house in am area scheduled for demolition. Víctor visits his mothers grave, where he encounters Elena at her fathers burial service, without identifying himself, he briefly offers her his condolences. Before leaving the cemetery he encounters Sanchos wife Clara, who has arrived too late for Elenas service and they leave together and she visits his apartment. Elena, now off drugs and operating an orphanage, tells David of her encounter with Víctor, David stops by Víctors house and warns him not to go near his wife. Víctor challenges him to prevent him doing whatever he wants. David leaves, but he sees Clara arriving and watches from a distance, Clara, drawn by Víctors enthusiasm and good looks, agrees to teach him how to make love while pampering him with gifts and affection

The Chambermaid on the Titanic is a 1997 French-Italian-Spanish drama film directed by Bigas Luna, starring Oliver Martinez, Romane Bohringer and Aitana Sanchez-Gijon. It is based on the novel La Femme de chambre du Titanic by Didier Decoin, in 1912, the protagonist, Horty, leads an uneventful life as a foundry worker in the Lorraine region of northern France with his wife, Zoe, the most beautiful woman in town. The owner of the foundry where Horty works, Simeon, lusts after Zoe, when Horty wins a company athletic contest, Simeons prize is a ticket to Southampton to see the sailing of the Titanic. The night before the Titanic departs, Horty meets a young woman named Marie. Marie has nowhere to sleep because all of the hotels are full. Their encounter is seemingly chaste, with Marie sleeping in the bed while Horty spends the night in the armchair, however, in the middle of the night Marie tries to seduce him. Whether or not she succeeds is ambiguous, and she is gone when Horty awakes, attending the departure of the Titanic, Horty spots a photographer taking a picture of Marie, and asks the photographer for the photo. Upon returning home, Horty finds that he has been promoted, a bitter and jealous Horty visits a local bar to drown his sorrows. Drunk, he tells friends and co-workers about the lovely chambermaid he met in Southampton, earning him free drinks, following the sinking of the Titanic, Hortys tales become increasingly erotic, and the viewer is never sure what is truth and what is fantasy. Horty catches the attention of an entertainer named Zeppe. Zeppe offers Horty the chance to escape his dreary life. Horty agrees and begins to work with Zeppe, converting his story into a play, one night, Zoe attends the play, later, Horty explains his tale as a work of fiction. However, Hortys story becomes more elaborate and romantic attracting an audience for each re-telling steadily driving a wedge between him and his wife. Eventually Zoe demands a part in the performance, playing the role of Marie poignantly fighting against the waves after the Titanic sinks, the film ends by revealing why Marie would sleep with Horty. Mick LaSelle of the San Francisco Chronicle praised Chambermaid for what he felt was a rare honest portrayal of male sexuality and he also called it a tribute to longing itself saying that that made it unique. Bill Gallo of the Dallas Observer called it beautiful, complex occasionally overwrought and a meditation on the uses of imagination. However, Stephen Holden of the New York Times felt that the film never finds a visual vocabulary to match the elegance of its ideas. However, he compared Chambermaid favourably to James Camerons film Titanic saying The Chambermaid on the Titanic is a smarter and far more elegant film, the central question is not why did the great ship go down

Bigas Luna

Josep Joan Bigas i Luna, known artistically as Bigas Luna, was a Spanish film director, designer and artist. His films are characterised by a strong emphasis on the erotic, often related to food. His work often explores and parodies clichés of Spanish identity, but he had a career and has made films in the Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French. He began his career working in interior and industrial design. His designs during the 1960s showed a great interest in conceptual art and he won the Gold Delta Award ADI/FAD1970. He moved into movie making in the 1970s, making low-budget shorts with erotic themes, in 1976 he shot his first feature film, Tattoo, achieving notoriety in 1978 with the sexually explicit Bilbao, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. In 1986 he retired to Tarragona in order to devote his time to painting and he and his wife Celia ran an organic farm which produced wine, ham and other organic products. Luna enjoyed the life of a bon vivant, without abandoning his dedication to painting and photography, reflected in numerous exhibitions, he began the well-known Iberian Trilogy with Jamón Jamón, Huevos de Oro and La teta y la luna. These films explored the darkest depths of eroticism and stereotypical Spanish machismo, Jamón Jamón, which launched the careers of both Javier Bardem and the 16-year-old Penélope Cruz was a major international success and won the Silver Lion at Venice in 1992. Cruz returned in Volavérunt, a film about the relationship between Francisco Goya and the Duchess of Alba. The experience in the Taller introduced them to the world of new technologies and in 2002 they promoted PLATAFORM BL, dedicated to the creation and promotion of innovative projects, Bigas Lunas varied career as a filmmaker, painter and designer made him a very singular and interdisciplinary artist. An example of that is his project called Microcosmos, an evolution of the earlier Cares de lÀnima which was exhibited in the Galería Metropolitana de Barcelona in 1990. It can now be found on a web site, where the visitor can modify and select the works and become, in this way, the creator. Bigas Luna directed and produced a multimedia installation for the Spain Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, named Origins. The installation fused live Flamenco dance, sculpture and videos on more than 20 projectors, from 2008 to 2012, Bigas took on the art direction of the oldest musical café in Europe, El Plata, in Zaragoza. He died of leukemia on 5 April 2013, while working on the adaptation of Manuel de Pedrolos novel Mecanoscrit del segon origen

Blanca Portillo is a Spanish actress. Portillo started as an actress in several theater productions before graduating in drama from the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramatico. One of her most important performances afterwards was her role of Carol in Oleanna by David Mamet and she made her film debut in Entre rojas. In 1996, Luis San Narciso cast her for the hit Telecinco TV series 7 vidas, the series lasted for ten years and ran for 204 episodes. Portillo played the role of Carlota, an insecure but brassy hairdresser who married Gonzalo, at the same Goyas, she won Best Supporting Actress for the play Eslavos, which focused on the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the century. She also participated in the Castilian dubbing of Finding Nemo, in spite of her success in TV and movies, she has never left theater and she has taken part in several plays both as an actress and as a director. In 2004, she left 7 vidas to undertake a project in Argentina named La hija del aire based on a book by Calderón de la Barca. She combined her work on this play with the film Elsa y Fred in which she plays a woman suspicious of the relationship between her father and his Argentinian neighbor. In the 2005 film Alatriste, based on a book by Arturo Pérez Reverte, she played a male role and she shaved her head for the role. The following year, Pedro Almodóvar cast her in his 2006 film Volver and she played Agustina, a friend of the central family who is terminally ill and looking for her missing mother. Here she played the lover of the owner of a billiard club, in 2009, she featured again in a film by Pedro Almodóvar, Broken Embraces playing the role of Judit. Her work in recent years has seen a return to Spanish television, including a role in Hospital Central and she had a small role in the 2010 Javier Bardem feature Biutiful and the 2011 film La Chispa de la Vida, starring alongside Salma Hayek. Ashes of Paradise is a 1997 Argentine film directed by Marcelo Piñeyro. It tells in flashbacks how the untroubled private happiness of a family – a judge, the film won several awards, among them a renowned Goya Award, for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film. It was Argentinas official submission for the 1997 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the film opens with the fall of the respected judge Costa Makantasis from the Federal Courthouse. Next, his oldest son Pablo is seen dragging the body of young, two different judges begin to investigate the two deaths. It is soon assumed that Costa Makantasis committed suicide, in addition, they urge Teller to believe that their father was murdered and that his case also requires investigation. Teller, on the hand, is pressured by her superiors to hand over the case of the three brothers to the judge assigned to Costa Makantasis apparent suicide. Fearing that a dirty truth behind the supposed suicide shall be covered up, combining cutbacks with segments of the investigations and hearings, the film sets to unravelling the story leading up to the deaths. The remaining film is divided into four parts, each dedicated to one of the sons. In each part, fragments of the story are shown from the perspective of the respective character and it becomes apparent that Costa Makantasis had investigated Ana Muros father, the powerful businessman Francisco Muro, suspecting him to be involved in corruption and even murder. Unbeknown to the two, Makantasis youngest son, Alejandro, and Ana Muro fell in love each other. For a short time, everything seemed perfect, Alejandro and Ana were a couple. Soon, however, tensions arose both from inside and outside of the family, the conflict between the judge and the businessman generally increased, and Costa Makantasis suspected that Muro tapped his house. So, when Costa Makantatis saw that Ana Muro let employees of her father into his house, he and his oldest son told her to stop that, believing in a misconception, Ana took secret documents of her father to Costa Makantasis office to prove her fathers innocence. There, however, she had a look at the documents, realized that at least some of the suspicions were well-founded. Just after she departed, two of Muros employees arrived and killed Makantasis by pushing him from the roof of the building, Ana Muro had just left the building, whereas the three Makantasis brothers were just arriving at the Courthouse to take their father to lunch. So, when Ana leaves the scene, he shouts to his brothers that she had killed their father, then Pablo followed Ana, who raced to her father, threw the secret documents back at him and called him a murderer in public. Pablo, watching the scene, realized that Ana had not been part of the crime, Alejandro, however, had now heard Pablos accusations and seen Nicolás guilty face. He turned home where he tore down and cut off the decorations that Ana, when Ana came home to him, he affronted her, telling her she cheated on him and killed his father

The name Argentina was probably first given by the Venitian and Genoese navigators, in Spanish and Portuguese, the words for silver are respectively plata and prata and of silver is said plateado and prateado. Argentina was first associated with the silver mountains legend, widespread among the first European explorers of the La Plata Basin. The first written use of the name in Spanish can be traced to La Argentina, a 1602 poem by Martín del Barco Centenera describing the region, the 1826 constitution included the first use of the name Argentine Republic in legal documents. The name Argentine Confederation was also used and was formalized in the Argentine Constitution of 1853. In 1860 a presidential decree settled the name as Argentine Republic
