The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, better known as Seville Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Seville. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. It is also the largest cathedral in the world, as the two churches, the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida and St. Peters Basilica, are not the seats of bishops. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the Alcázar palace complex, See refers to the episcopal see, i. e. the bishops ecclesiastical jurisdiction. After its completion in the early 16th century, the Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world, the cathedral is also the burial site of Christopher Columbus. The Archbishops Palace is located on the side of the cathedral. Seville Cathedral was built to demonstrate the wealth, as it had become a major trading center in the years after the Reconquista in 1248. In July 1401 it was decided to build a new cathedral, according to local oral tradition, the members of the cathedral chapter said, Hagamos una Iglesia tan hermosa y tan grandiosa que los que la vieren labrada nos tengan por locos. Construction began in 1402 and continued until 1506, the clergy of the parish gave half their stipends to pay for architects, artists, stained glass artisans, masons, carvers, craftsman and labourers and other expenses. Five years after construction ended, in 1511, the dome collapsed, the dome again collapsed in 1888, and work was still being performed on the dome until at least 1903. The 1888 collapse occurred due to an earthquake and resulted in the destruction of every precious object below the dome at that time, the interior has the longest nave of any cathedral in Spain. The central nave rises to a height of 42 meters and is decorated with a large quantity of gilding. This altarpiece was the work of a single craftsman, Pierre Dancart. The builders used some columns and other elements from the ancient mosque, including its minaret, the Giralda is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville. Its height is 343 feet, and its base is 23 feet above sea level and 44 feet long per side. The Giralda is the minaret of the mosque that stood on the site under Muslim rule. It was converted into a tower for the cathedral after the Reconquista. Friedrich von Schmidt

Friedrich von Schmidt was an architect who worked in late 19th century Vienna. Von Schmidt was born in Frickenhofen, Gschwend, Württemberg, Germany, most of the working drawings for the towers were made by Schmidt and Vincenz Statz. In 1848 he attained the rank of master-workman and in 1856 passed the examination as architect. After becoming a Catholic in 1858, he went to Milan as professor of architecture, in the Gothic Revival style he built in Vienna the Church of Saint Lazarus, Saint Othmars Church in the 3rd district and that of the Brigittines. He also built a school, the Akademisches Gymnasium, with a Gothic facade, the last mentioned building was in Venetian Gothic. A large number of ecclesiastical and secular buildings in Austria. His last work was the restoration of the cathedral in Pécs in Hungary and his chief fame however he gained by his restoration of St. Stephens Cathedral, Vienna. He took down the spire and worked on its rebuilding up to 1872. He also designed the Town Hall or Rathaus, Vienna, with a middle section which has a central tower that rises free to a height of 328 ft. and is flanked by four smaller towers. A large court and six smaller ones are enclosed by the extensive building, in building the parish church in Funfhaus he even ventured to set a facade with two towers in front of an octagonal central structure with a high cupola and a corona of chapels. His motto was to unite German force with Italian freedom and he also designed Vaduz Cathedral and St. Josephs Cathedral in Bucharest. From 1870 to 1882, he worked as architect on the neoromanesque Cathedral of St. Peter. He was teacher and model to many architects, including Friedrich Grünanger, Frigyes Schulek, Imre Steindl. A bronze statue of him has been placed before the town-hall of Vienna and his son Heinrich was overseer at the building of the cathedral of Frankfurt and afterwards professor of medieval architecture in Munich. Castle of the Three Dragons

This name was probably adopted from the 1865 novel by Serafí Pitarra. In its time it was one of the buildings of the exhibition. It was at the end of the street running from the Arc de Triomf to the Parc de la Ciutadella. Work began in September 1887, and suffered delays, and so, on April 8. For this reason Domènech i Montaner resigned as the responsible architect, at the end of exhibition, Domenech himself installed an industrial arts workshop related to architecture, with the possible collaboration of Antoni Maria Gallissà i Tighten. Later it was dedicated to museum purposes, being a museum of history, archeology, biology, during the Spanish Civil War it was closed, after suffering some damage by bombing aviation Franco. From 1942 to 1945 it was chair of Social Aid to be aimed at Museum of Zoology. In the 1980s it was restored by architects Cristian Cirici, Pep Bonet, until 2010 it hosted zoology collections of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Catalonia, when they were transferred to the Forum Building. It is built with brick and sheet iron, and is a castle-shaped building crowned with battlements, the floor is almost square, with four towers at the corners and perimeter walkways running between a double facade. It has a transparent structure of brick and iron, something similar to which appeared in the proposal by Hendrik Petrus Berlage in his project for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. The State Opera, is an opera house in Prague, Czech Republic. It is part of the National Theatre of the Czech Republic, the theatre itself originally opened in 1888 as the New German Theatre and from 1949 to 1989 it was known as the Smetana Theatre. More recently it was known as the Prague State Opera, currently it is home to approximately 300 performances a year. The history of the currently known as the Prague State Opera dates back to the late 19th Century. While often overshadowed by the more prominent National Theatre of Prague, the birth of a magnificent Czech Theatre, the National Theatre, in 1883 indirectly created a longing among the Prague German community for a German-speaking opera house of its own. At that time the Czech lands were part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and there was a large German minority living in Prague, on 4 February 1883 the Deutscher Theaterverein was founded with the goal of raising funds for the new theatre. The plans were developed by the well-known Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer along with Karl Hasenauer, the resulting Neues deutsches Theater was designed by the Prague architect Alfons Wertmüller and built within 20 months. With its spacious auditorium and elaborate neo-rococo décor, the theater was one of the most beautiful in Europe, performances commenced on 5 January 1888 with Richard Wagners opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The first director became Angelo Neumann, who brought there distinguished musicians, neumanns successors were Heinrich Teweles, Leopold Kramer, Robert Volkner, Paul Eger, and Pavel Ludikar. Guest artists included Nellie Melba, Enrico Caruso, Emma Calvé, Lilli Lehmann, Selma Kurz, Maria Jeritza, Richard Tauber and Leo Slezak. In the 1930s, with the growing Nazi threat, the New German Theatre in Prague was among the bastions of democracy, political developments shortly before signing of the Munich Agreement along with financial problems however led the German Theatre Association to close the theatre in September 1938. The Czechoslovak state expressed an interest in the building, but the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia on 15 March 1939 and establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia thwarted its plans. Under the new title Deutsches Opernhaus, the served for political assemblies of the Nazi Party. A radical change came in May 1945 following the fall of the Nazi-led government, a group of Czech artists headed by Alois Hába, Václav Kašlík, and Antonín Kurš founded the Theatre of the Fifth of May in the former German Opera House. For the first time the theatre became a home for Czech, the first performance was of Bedřich Smetanas Brandenburgers in Bohemia on 4 September 1945. The artistic agenda of the new ensemble strove to create a theatre that would serve as an alternative to the more conservative National Theatre. The theatres ground-breaking productions aroused attention on the part of the public, unfortunately, the success of the Grand Opera of the Fifth of May began to create unwanted competition for the National Theatre. Starting with the 1948-49 season, by government decree the Grand Opera was incorporated into the National Theatre, thus the second significant creative period of the theatre ended after only three seasons

Fellner & Helmer was an architecture studio founded in 1873 by Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. They designed over 200 buildings, mainly theatres and apartment buildings, across Europe in the late 19th century, most of the work stood in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, but can be found from Switzerland to present-day Ukraine. Frequent collaborators for integrated exterior and interior work include Gustav Klimt, Hans Makart, Theodor Friedl, Ferdinand Fellner was born in Vienna in 1847. He studied at the Vienna University of Technology, but abandoned in the first year to help his sick father, after the death of his father in 1871 he overtook his office. Baron Karl von Hasenauer

Baron Karl von Hasenauer was an important Austrian architect and key representative of the Historismus school. He created several Neo-Baroque monuments, many around near the Ringstraße in Vienna and he was also a student of August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. For his outstanding work, he was ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1873, and made Freiherr, Hasenauer was the chief architect for the Vienna Worlds Fair in 1873. Together with Gottfried Semper he designed the complex with the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum, the Burgtheater, the Hermesvilla, after a conflict with his former business partner Semper he managed the building of the Hofburg alone. The conflict over attribution of their joint projects continues to this day between the supporters of Semper and Hasenauer, however, because the older master Semper is credited with the Semperoper in Dresden, Hasenauer receives more credit for the architecture in the Ringstraße

The Royal Concertgebouw is a concert hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Dutch term concertgebouw literally translates into English as concert building, on 11 April 2013, on occasion of the buildings 125th anniversary, Queen Beatrix bestowed the Royal Title Koninklijk upon the building, as she did previously to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Because of its highly regarded acoustics, the Concertgebouw is considered one of the finest concert halls in the world, along with such as Bostons Symphony Hall. The architect of the building was Adolf Leonard van Gendt, who was inspired by the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, construction began in 1883 in a pasture that was then outside the city, in Nieuwer-Amstel, a municipality that in 1964 became Amstelveen. A total of 2,186 piles of length twelve to thirteen metres were sunk into the soil. The hall opened on 11 April 1888 with a concert, in which an orchestra of 120 musicians and a chorus of 500 singers participated, performing works of Wagner, Handel, Bach. The resident orchestra of the Concertgebouw is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, for many decades the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest have also been regular performers in the Concertgebouw. The Main Hall seats 1,974, and is 44 metres long,28 metres wide and its reverberation time is 2.8 seconds without audience,2.2 seconds with, making it ideal for the late Romantic repertoire such as Mahler. Though this characteristic makes it unsuited for amplified music, groups such as Led Zeppelin, The Who. It hosts not only orchestral and operatic performances, but also jazz, a smaller, oval-shaped venue, the Recital Hall, is located behind the Main Hall. The Recital Hall is 20 metres long and 15 metres wide and its more intimate space is well-suited for chamber music and Lieder. The Recital Hall has 437 seats, when the Concertgebouw was built, acoustics were something of a black art. As in shipbuilding, designers drew upon what had worked in the past without entirely understanding the underlying science, when the building was completed, the acoustics were not perfect, and a lot of effort went into fine-tuning the aural ambience. During later restorations, particular care has been not to alter the materials used for interior decoration with this in mind. In the 1980s, the hall embarked on extensive fund-raising for renovations after the hall was found to be sinking into the ground. Pi de Bruijn was the architect for the annex to the original hall. Today, some nine hundred concerts and other events per year take place in the Concertgebouw, for a public of over 700,000, as of February 2014, the managing director of the Concertgebouw is Simon Reinink and the artistic director is Anneke Hogenstijn. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. After the floods of 1170 and 1173, locals near the river Amstel built a bridge over the river, the earliest recorded use of that name is in a document dated October 27,1275, which exempted inhabitants of the village from paying bridge tolls to Count Floris V. This allowed the inhabitants of the village of Aemstelredamme to travel freely through the County of Holland, paying no tolls at bridges, locks, the certificate describes the inhabitants as homines manentes apud Amestelledamme. By 1327, the name had developed into Aemsterdam, Amsterdam is much younger than Dutch cities such as Nijmegen, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. In October 2008, historical geographer Chris de Bont suggested that the land around Amsterdam was being reclaimed as early as the late 10th century. This does not necessarily mean there was already a settlement then, since reclamation of land may not have been for farming—it may have been for peat. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, is a historic railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. The stations name was changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in March 1996, Bori Bunder was one of the areas along the Eastern shore line of Mumbai, India which was used as a storehouse for goods imported and exported from Mumbai. In the areas name, Bori means sack and Bandar means port or haven, in the 1850s, the Great Indian Peninsular Railway built its railway terminus in this area and the station took its name as Bori Bunder. The train between Bori Bunder and Thane took 57 minutes at a distance of 35 km apart, the station was designed by the consulting British architect Frederick William Stevens. He received ₹1,614,000 as the payment for his services, Stevens earned the commission to construct the station after a masterpiece watercolour sketch by draughtsman Axel Haig. The final design bears resemblance to St Pancras railway station in London. GG Scotts plans for Berlins parliament building had been published four years before, crawford market is also located near CSTM. The station took ten years to complete, the longest for any building of that era in Bombay and this famous architectural landmark in a Gothic-revival style was built as the headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. Since then, the station came to be known as Bombay VT, the original platforms were from 1–9. The original building is still in use to handle traffic and is used by over three million commuters daily. It is also the headquarters of the Central Railway. In 1996, the Minister of Railways, Suresh Kalmadi, changed the name of the station to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in honour of Great King Chhatrapati Shivaji, on 26 November 2008, two terrorists entered the passenger hall of the CST, opened fire and threw grenades at people. The terrorists were armed with AK-47 rifles, One of the terrorists, Ajmal Kasab, was later caught alive by the police and identified by eyewitnesses. This despite the fact that Central Railway RPF Hq being located near Platform 13 overlooking the central passenger hall. The CCTV captured the attack but was not completely made public to hide Railway police inaction. The CCTV evidence was used to identify and indict Kasab, in 2010, Kasab was sentenced to death for his role in the attack, and in 2012 he was hanged. The station building is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style of architecture, the building exhibits a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and classical Indian architecture. The skyline, turrets, pointed arches, and eccentric ground plan are close to classical Indian palace architecture, the station stands as an example of 19th century railway architectural marvels for its advanced structural and technical solutions. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway was a predecessor of the Central Railway, whose headquarters was at the Boree Bunder in Mumbai. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway was incorporated on August 1,1849 by an act of the British Parliament and it had a share capital of 50,000 pounds. The Court of Directors of the East India Company appointed James John Berkeley as Chief Resident Engineer, kar and R. W. Graham as his assistants. It was Indias ever first railway, the original 21 mile section opening in 1853, on July 1,1925 its management was taken over by the Government. On November 5,1951 it was incorporated into the Central Railway and it was meant for the purpose of increasing the export of cotton, silk, opium, sugar and spices. The management committee consisted of 25 British men, including officials of the East India company and banks in London, most of whom resided in Britain and some who had resided in India. It was originally meant to connect the towns of Poonah, Nassuek, Aurungabad, Ahmednuggur, Sholapoor, Nagpur, Oomrawutty, and Hyderabad. On April 16,1853 at 3,35 pm, the first passenger train of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway left Boree Bunder station in Bombay for Tannah The train took fifty-seven minutes to reach Tannah and it covered a distance of 21 miles. Three locomotives named Sultan, Sindh and Sahib pulled the 14 carriages carrying 400 passengers on board, the railway bridge over Thane creek, first in India, was completed in 1854. The portion of the line from Tannah to Callian was opened on May 1,1854, the construction of this portion was difficult as it involved a two-line viaduct over the estuary and two tunnels. On May 12,1856 the line was extended to Campoolie via Padusdhurree, the Padusdhurree-Khandala section involved the difficult crossing of the Bhore Ghat and it took another five years for completion. During this period, the 21 km gap was covered by palanquin, the Kassarah line was opened on January 1,1861 and the steep Thull ghat section up to Egutpoora was opened on January 1,1865 and thus completed the crossing of the Sahyadri. The south-east main line proceeded over Bhor Ghat to Poonah, Sholapore and Raichore, by 1868, route kilometerage was 888 km and by 1870, route kilometerage was 2,388. Beyond Callian, the north-east main line proceeded over the Thull ghat to Bhosawal near Nusseerabad, from Bhosawal, there was a bifurcation. One passed through great cotton district of Oomravuttee and was extended up to Nagpore, the other was extended up to Jubbulpore to connect with the Allahabad-Jubbulpore branch line of the East Indian Railway which had been opened in June 1867. Hence it became possible to directly from Bombay to Calcutta. The Howrah-Allahabad-Mumbai line was opened on 7 March 1870 and it was part of the inspiration for French writer Jules Vernes book Around the World in Eighty Days

Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the ninth most populous agglomeration in the world, Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2008, Mumbai was named a world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West, Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires among all cities in India. The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies, during the mid-18th century, Bombay was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook reclamation of the area between the seven islands from the sea. Along with construction of roads and railways, the reclamation project, completed in 1845. Bombay in the 19th century was characterised by economic and educational development, during the early 20th century it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement. Upon Indias independence in 1947 the city was incorporated into Bombay State, in 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital. Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India and it is also home to some of Indias premier scientific and nuclear institutes like BARC, NPCL, IREL, TIFR, AERB, AECI, and the Department of Atomic Energy. The city also houses Indias Hindi and Marathi film and television industry, Mumbais business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher standard of living, attract migrants from all over India, making the city a melting pot of many communities and cultures. The oldest known names for the city are Kakamuchee and Galajunkja, in 1508, Portuguese writer Gaspar Correia used the name Bombaim, in his Lendas da Índia. This name possibly originated as the Old Portuguese phrase bom baim, meaning good little bay, in 1516, Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa used the name Tana-Maiambu, Tana appears to refer to the adjoining town of Thane and Maiambu to Mumbadevi. Other variations recorded in the 16th and the 17th centuries include, Mombayn, Bombay, Bombain, Bombaym, Monbaym, Mombaim, Mombaym, Bambaye, Bombaiim, Bombeye, Boon Bay, and Bon Bahia. After the English gained possession of the city in the 17th century, Ali Muhammad Khan, imperial diwan or revenue minister of the Gujarat province, in the Mirat-i-Ahmedi referred to the city as Manbai. By the late 20th century, the city was referred to as Mumbai or Mambai in the Indian statewise official languages of Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, Kannada and Sindhi, the Government of India officially changed the English name to Mumbai in November 1995. According to Slate magazine, they argued that Bombay was a corrupted English version of Mumbai, Slate also said The push to rename Bombay was part of a larger movement to strengthen Marathi identity in the Maharashtra region. A resident of Mumbai is called mumbaikar in the Marathi language, the term has been in use for quite some time but it gained popularity after the official name change to Mumbai. 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition

The 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition was Spains first International Worlds Fair and ran from May 20 to December 9,1888. It was also the first of the two held in Barcelona, eugenio Serrano de Casanova tried to launch an exposition in 1886, and when that failed, the Mayor of Barcelona, Francesc Rius i Taulet, took over the planning of the project. The fair was hosted on the reconstructed 115-acre site of the main public park. More than 2 million people from Spain, the rest of Europe, and other points of embarkation visited the exhibition. The fair was opened by Alfonso XIII of Spain and Maria Christina of Austria, twenty-seven countries participated, including China, Japan and the United States. The piano manufacturer Erard sponsored a series of 20 concerts featuring Isaac Albéniz, another product of the World Fair is the Modernista or Neo-Mudéjar Arc de Triomf, the Fairs former gateway, presiding over Passeig de Lluís Companys. Other architectural details in the city bear witness to the passage of the World Fair as well, the Columbus Monument, a 60 m tall monument to Christopher Columbus, was built for the exposition on the site where Columbus returned to Europe after his first voyage to the Americas. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, often abbreviated as Frankfurt Hbf and sometimes translated as Frankfurt central station, is the busiest railway station in Frankfurt, Germany. The name affix Main comes from the full name, Frankfurt am Main. In terms of traffic, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is the busiest railway station in Germany. With about 450,000 passengers per day, the station is the second busiest railway station in Germany and those three stations were placed beside each other on the then Gallustor. This situation was considered due to rising passenger figures in the 19th century. At first, a large station with up to 34 platforms was considered. Post and baggage handlings had their own facilities, and the city council demanded the station to be moved further away from the city. The new station was placed about 1 km to the west of the first three stations, the platforms were covered by three iron-and-glass halls. The station was built by the contractor Philipp Holzmann with construction starting in 1883, the Central-Bahnhof Frankfurt was finally opened on 18 August 1888. Right on the evening of the day, a train ran over the buffer stop. Over the course of the few years, the area to the east of the new station. Until the completion of Leipzig Hauptbahnhof in 1915, Frankfurt station was the largest in Europe, as of today, the 24 platforms with 26 tracks on one level probably make it the worlds largest one-level railway hall. In 1924 two neoclassical halls were added on each side of the hall, increasing the number of platforms to 24. During World War II, the building was partly damaged, in 1956 the station was fully electrified. One year later, Europes then-largest signal box was commissioned, which, between 2002 and 2006, the roof construction, which is a listed building, was renovated. This involved the exchange of aged steel girders, reinstallation of windows that were replaced by panels after World War II, the operational part of the station is being remodeled as well, the old signal box has been recently replaced with an electronic signal box. This was vital to improve capacity of the station, the new signal box became operational in late 2005 and will allow faster speeds into the station after the remodelling of the tracks. The appearance of the station is divided into perron and vestibule, dominant in those parts built in 1888 are Neo-Renaissance features, the outer two halls, added in 1924 follow the style of neoclassicism

He designed important public buildings such as the Frankfurt Main Station, born in Burg bei Magdeburg, Eggert studied with Heinrich Strack at the Bauakademie in Berlin. He built the Frankfurt Main Station from 1883 to 1888, regarded as his most important building, Eggert served as Oberbaurat in the Ministerium für öffentliche Arbeiten of Prussia in Berlin, where he was mostly responsible for church buildings. He participated in the competition for the New Town Hall in Hanover in 1895, from 1898 he worked in his own office in Hanover. He was in conflict about the design of the Prunkräume of the Town Hall with Christian Heinrich Tramm who had designed the Welfenschloss, As a result, many of Eggerts designs are in the style of Neo-Renaissance. He was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts from 1896 in the section Bildende Künste, many of Eggerts designs are held at the Museum of Architecture of the Technische Universität Berlin. In the central Frankfurt Gallus quarter a section of a street called after Camberg was renamed Hermann-Eggert-Straße in 2009, alexander Dorner,100 Jahre Bauen in Hannover.
