The Antarctic Peter I Island and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are dependent territories and thus not considered part of the Kingdom. Norway also lays claim to a section of Antarctica known as Queen Maud Land, until 1814, the kingdom included the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It also included Isle of Man until 1266, Shetland and Orkney until 1468, Norway has a total area of 385,252 square kilometres and a population of 5,258,317. The country shares a long border with Sweden. Norway is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east, Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. King Harald V of the Dano-German House of Glücksburg is the current King of Norway, erna Solberg became Prime Minister in 2013, replacing Jens Stoltenberg. A constitutional monarchy, Norway divides state power between the Parliament, the Cabinet and the Supreme Court, as determined by the 1814 Constitution, the kingdom is established as a merger of several petty kingdoms. By the traditional count from the year 872, the kingdom has existed continuously for 1,144 years, Norway has both administrative and political subdivisions on two levels, counties and municipalities. The Sámi people have an amount of self-determination and influence over traditional territories through the Sámi Parliament. Norway maintains close ties with the European Union and the United States, the country maintains a combination of market economy and a Nordic welfare model with universal health care and a comprehensive social security system. Norway has extensive reserves of petroleum, natural gas, minerals, lumber, seafood, the petroleum industry accounts for around a quarter of the countrys gross domestic product. On a per-capita basis, Norway is the worlds largest producer of oil, the country has the fourth-highest per capita income in the world on the World Bank and IMF lists. On the CIAs GDP per capita list which includes territories and some regions, from 2001 to 2006, and then again from 2009 to 2017, Norway had the highest Human Development Index ranking in the world. It also has the highest inequality-adjusted ranking, Norway ranks first on the World Happiness Report, the OECD Better Life Index, the Index of Public Integrity and the Democracy Index. Norway has two names, Noreg in Nynorsk and Norge in Bokmål. The name Norway comes from the Old English word Norðrveg mentioned in 880, meaning way or way leading to the north. In contrasting with suðrvegar southern way for Germany, and austrvegr eastern way for the Baltic, the Anglo-Saxon of Britain also referred to the kingdom of Norway in 880 as Norðmanna land. The Norwegian monarch is the monarchical head of state of Norway, which is a constitutional and hereditary monarchy with a parliamentary system. The present monarch is King Harald V, who has reigned since 17 January 1991, succeeding his father, the heir apparent is his only son, Crown Prince Haakon. The crown prince undertakes various public functions, as does the kings wife. The crown prince also acts as regent in the kings absence, there are several other members of the Royal Family, including the kings daughter, grandchildren and siblings. Whilst the Constitution of Norway grants important executive powers to the King, formally the King appoints the government according to his own judgement, but parliamentary practice has been in place since 1884. Constitutional practice has replaced the meaning of the word King in most articles of the constitution from the king personally to the elected government. The powers vested in the monarch are significant, but are treated only as reserve powers, the King does not, by convention, have direct participation in government. He ratifies laws and royal resolutions, receives and sends envoys from and to foreign countries and he has a more tangible influence as the symbol of national unity. The annual New Years Eve speech is one occasion when the King traditionally raises negative issues, the King is also Supreme Commander of the Norwegian Armed Forces and Grand Master of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav and of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. The King has no role in the Church of Norway. The position of King of Norway has been in existence since the unification of Norway in 872. In recent years members of the Socialist Left party have proposed the abolition of the monarchy during each new session of parliament and this gives the Norwegian monarchy the unique status of being a popularly elected royal family and receiving regular formal confirmations of support from the Storting. Prior to and in the phase of the Viking Age Norway was divided into several smaller kingdoms. Harald Fairhair was the first king of Norway, the boundaries of Fairhairs kingdom were not identical to those of present-day Norway, and upon his death the kingship was shared among his sons. Some historians emphasise the actual control over the country and assert that Olaf II, alias Saint Olaf. Olaf is generally held to have been the force behind Norways final conversion to Christianity. In the 12th and 13th centuries the Norwegian kingdom was at its geographical and cultural peak, the kingdom included Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Shetland, Orkney and other smaller areas in the British Isles. Oscar II of Sweden

Oscar II was King of Sweden from 1872 until his death and King of Norway from 1872 until his dethronement in 1905. He was the third of four sons of King Oscar I, as his eldest brother Charles XV was without heirs and his brother Prince Gustaf died in 1852, it was he who succeeded his brother as king. Oscar II was king during a period when Sweden was undergoing a period of industrialization, the declining Union of Sweden and Norway was finally dissolved in 1905 and Oscar became the last Bernadotte king of Norway. He died in 1907 and was succeed as King of Sweden by his son, at his birth in Stockholm, Oscar Fredrik was created Duke of Östergötland. He entered the navy at the age of eleven, and was appointed lieutenant in July 1845. Later he studied at Uppsala University, where he distinguished himself in mathematics, on 13 December 1848, he was made an honorary member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. On 6 June 1857 he married in Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany, Princess Sophia Wilhelmina, from 1859, when his father died, he was first in line to the Swedish throne after his oldest brother King Charles, who then had no male heirs. His middle brother Gustaf had died in 1852 and he succeeded his brother Charles XV / IV on 18 September 1872. At the accession he adopted as his motto Brödrafolkens väl / Broderfolkenes Vel, the political events which led up to the peaceful dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905 could hardly have been attained but for the tact and patience of the king himself. He was dethroned on 7 June 1905 by the Norwegian Parliament and he declined, indeed, to permit any prince of his house to become king of Norway, but better relations between the two countries were restored before his death. He died in Stockholm on 8 December 1907 at 9,10 AM and his acute intelligence and his aloofness from the dynastic considerations affecting most European sovereigns gave the king considerable weight as an arbitrator in international questions. At the request of Great Britain, Germany and the United States in 1889 he appointed the justice of Samoa. He was the 1, 027th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Spain, the office of prime minister was instituted in 1876. Louis De Geer became the first head of government in Sweden to use this title, the most known and powerful first minister of the Crown during the reign of Oscar was the conservative estate owner Erik Gustaf Boström. Boström served as Prime Minister in 1891-1900 and 1902-1905 and he was trusted and respected by the king, who had much difficulty approving someone else as prime minister. Over a period of time, the king gave Boström a free hand to select his own ministers without much royal involvement and it was an arrangement that furthered the road to parliamentarism. Himself a distinguished writer and musical amateur, King Oscar proved a friend of learning. The Prime Minister and Cabinet are collectively accountable for their policies and actions to the Monarch, to the Storting, to their political party, and ultimately the electorate. In practice, since it is impossible for a government to stay in office against the will of the Storting. Norway has a Constitution, which was adopted on 17 May 1814, the position of Prime Minister is the result of legislation. As of 2017, the Prime Minister of Norway is Erna Solberg, unlike their counterparts in the rest of Europe, Norwegian Prime Ministers do not have the option of advising the King to dissolve the Storting and call a snap election. The Constitution requires that the Storting serve out its full four-year term, if the Prime Minister loses the confidence of the Storting, he or she must resign. Francis Hagerup

George Francis Hagerup was a Norwegian law professor, diplomat and politician for the Conservative Party. He was Prime Minister of Norway from 14 October 1895 to 17 February 1898, as a legal scholar, he is known for his contributions to the development of public international law, and was chairman of the Institut de Droit International. Francis Hagerup grew up in Trondheim and he was a son of admiral and cabinet minister Henrik Steffens Hagerup and Nicoline Christine Jenssen. Degree at the Royal Frederick University in 1876, received a grant to study abroad and he obtained the dr. juris degree in 1885, and was professor of law at the Royal Frederick University from 1887 to 1906. He was minister of justice in the Second cabinet Stang from 2 May 1893 to 14 October 1895, in August 1895 he was Finance minister. He was a member of the Storting from 1901 to 1906, in social policy, Hagerups time as Prime Minister saw the passage of a child care law in 1896 that increased the power of local authorities and courts over neglected and abused children. Following his two bouts as Prime Minister, he entered the diplomacy in 1906, as ambassador to Copenhagen, The Hague, from 1916 he was ambassador in Stockholm. Hagerup was passionately involved in the development of international law. From 1897 he was member of the Institut de Droit International, in 1907 he headed the Norwegian delegation at the second peace conference in The Hague. He was also delegate at international conferences regarding admiralty law, in 1920 he led the Norwegian delegation when the League of Nations convened for the first time in Geneva. The same year he was elected to the Law committee under the League council, in 1888, he founded Tidsskrift for Retsvidenskab, and served as its editor until his death. SS Norge

SS Norge was a Danish passenger liner sailing from Copenhagen, Kristiania and Kristiansand to New York, mainly with emigrants, which sank off Rockall in 1904. It was the biggest civilian maritime disaster in the Atlantic Ocean until the sinking of the Titanic eight years later and she was built in 1881 by Alexander Stephen and Sons of Linthouse, Glasgow, for the Belgian company Theodore C. Engels & Co of Antwerp, her name was Pieter de Coninck. The ship was 3,359 GRT and 3,700 tonnes deadweight, and she could carry a maximum of 800 passengers. In 1889, she was sold to a Danish company, A/S Dampskibs-selskabet Thingvalla, for its Stettin-Copenhagen-Kristiania-Kristiansand-New York service, on 20 August 1898, Norge collided with the French fishing brigantine La Coquette in a fog. La Coquette broke in two and sank, and 16 of the 25 crew aboard drowned, following financial difficulties, Thingvalla was purchased in 1898 by Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab, Copenhagen, which served the route as Scandinavia-America Line. By then, the capacity of Norge was 50 1st class,150 2nd class and 900 3rd class passengers, in June 1904, the Norge was heading for New York from Copenhagen, under the command of Captain Gundal. She was carrying a crew of 71,9 second-class passengers, among the steerage passengers, there were 296 Norwegians,236 Russians,79 Danes,68 Swedes, and 15 Finns. Half of the passengers had prepaid tickets, paid for by relatives living in the United States. On 28 June, Norge ran aground on Hasselwood Rock, Helens Reef, close to Rockall and she was reversed off the rock after a few minutes, but the collision had ripped holes in the ships hull, and water began pouring into the hold. The crew of the Norge began lowering the lifeboats, but the first two lowered were destroyed by waves, only three boats were successfully launched out of the eight on board. Many passengers jumped overboard, only to drown or be pulled under by the suction caused by the ship as it swiftly sank, the Norge sank twelve minutes after the collision. Captain Gundal stayed with the ship as it sank, but managed to swim to one of the lifeboats, according to author Per Kristian Sebaks comprehensive account, over 635 people died during the sinking, among them 225 Norwegians. The first survivors to be rescued, a group of 26, were found by the Grimsby trawler Sylvia,32 more were picked up by the British steamer Cervonax, and 70, including Captain Gundal, by the German steamer Energie. Some of the 160 survivors spent up to eight days in open lifeboats before rescue, several more people lost their lives in the days that followed rescue, as a result of their exposure to the elements and swallowing salt water. Among the survivors was the poet Herman Wildenvey, the disaster remains the worst in Danish maritime history. Rockall

Rockall /ˈrɒkɔːl/ is an uninhabited granite islet within the exclusive economic zone of the United Kingdom, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its rough distances from the closest large islands are,430 km north-west of Ireland,460 km west of Great Britain and 700 km south of Iceland. The nearest permanently inhabited place is North Uist, an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland,370 km to the east, the United Kingdom incorporated Rockall in 1955. However, such features are entitled to a territorial sea extending 12 nautical miles, historically, Ireland did not recognise Britains claim to the rock or the territorial sea surrounding it. With effect from 31 March 2014, the UK and Ireland published EEZ limits which resolved any disputes over the extent of their respective EEZs, no other state has disputed our claim to the islet. The origin and meaning of the name Rockall are uncertain, the Old Norse name for the islet, Ròcal, may contain the element fjall, meaning mountain. It has also suggested that the name is from the Norse *rok, meaning foaming sea. Another idea is that it derives from the Gaelic Sgeir Rocail, dutch mapmakers P. Plancius and C. Claesz show an island called Rookol northwest of Ireland on their Map of New France, the first literary reference to the island, where it is called Rokol, is found in Martin Martins A Description of the Western Isles of Scotland published in 1703. This book gives an account of a voyage to the archipelago of St. Kilda, and from it lies Rokol, a small rock sixty leagues to the westward of St. Kilda, the inhabitants of this place call it Rokabarra. In the 20th century, the location of the islet became a major interest due to the oil and fishing rights. Lord Kennet said of it in 1971, There can be no place more desolate, despairing and it gives its name to one of the sea areas named in the shipping forecast provided by the British Meteorological Office. Rockall has been a point of interest for adventurers and amateur radio operators who have landed on or briefly occupied the islet. Fewer than 20 individuals have ever confirmed to have landed on Rockall. In a House of Commons debate in 1971, William Ross, MP for Kilmarnock, said, the islet of Rockall is one of the few pinnacles of the surrounding Helens Reef. It is located 301.3 km, or 162.7 nmi west of the island of Soay, St Kilda, Scotland, rockalls location was precisely determined by Nick Hancock during his 2014 expedition. The surrounding elevated seabed is called the Rockall Bank, lying directly south from a known as the Rockall Plateau. It is separated from the Outer Hebrides by the Rockall Trough, in 1956 the British scientist James Fisher referred to the island as the most isolated small rock in the oceans of the world

Ivar Ballangrud

Ivar Eugen Ballangrud was a Norwegian speed skater, a four-time Olympic champion in speed skating. As the only gold medalist at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Ivar Ballangrud was one of the best speed skaters in the world for a period of 15 years, coming from the small place Lunner on Hadeland, he was a member of the famous Hadeland Trio, consisting of himself, Michael Staksrud and Hans Engnestangen. He represented the club Trondhjems Skøiteklub, Ballangrud was four times World Allround Champion, four times European Allround Champion, five times Norwegian Allround Champion, and four times Olympic Champion. He won three Olympic titles at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen,500 m,5000 m, and 10,000 m. On the 1500 m during those Winter Olympics, he won silver – his teammate Charles Mathiesen being the one to keep him from winning gold in all four speed skating events. Ballangrud had won his first Olympic gold 8 years earlier on the 5000 m at the 1928 Winter Olympics, in addition, he won a bronze medal in 1928 and a silver medal at the 1932 Winter Olympics. He made his debut as a 19-year-old rising star in 1924. However, he was paired with Julius Skutnabb – who had just become the Olympic 10,000 m Champion – in his first World Championships in Helsinki in 1924, and beat the champion on his homeground. In 1930, he dethroned Oscar Mathisen from the top of the Adelskalender, in addition to his five official world records, Ballangrud skated 16,46.4 in a 10,000 m packstyle test race before the Olympic Games in 1932. This time was 31 seconds below the then-current world record and it would stand unbeaten as the fastest 10,000 m time for twenty years, Ballangrud was born as Ivar Eriksen. His mother changed his last name when she remarried following her husbands death, in retirement Ballangrud worked at his sporting good store in Drammen, and later in Trondheim. A statue in his honor was raised in his native Jevnaker, Source, EvertStenlund. se Note that Ballangruds personal record on the 1500 m was not a world record because Hans Engnestangen skated 2,13.8 at the same tournament. Carl Viggo Lange

Carl Viggo Manthey Lange was a Norwegian physician and politician for the Labour Party. He was born in Kristiania as a son of Christian Lous Lange and Bertha Manthey and he enrolled as a student in 1922, and graduated with the cand. med. While studying he was a member of Mot Dag, where he organized study circles for both members and non-members, and contributed to the periodical Populært Tidsskrift for Seksuell Oplysning. He was the chairman of the Norwegian Students Society in 1933, Lange worked as a physician in Oslo from 1930, and then in Trondheim from 1934 to 1946. The exception was the period from 1942 to 1945, when he was imprisoned at Falstad concentration camp by the Nazi occupants of Norway and he was acting stadsfysikus from 1946 to 1947, and also health inspector in Trondheim from 1946 to 1955. He became involved in politics, and was a member of Trondheim city council from 1945 to 1955 and he was elected to the Parliament of Norway from the Market towns of Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag counties in 1949, where he was a member of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs. He was not re-elected in 1953, but served as a deputy representative during the term 1950–1953, from 1955 to 1964 he was district physician in Oddernes, and from 1964 to his retirement in 1974 he was a county physician in Vest-Agder. When he applied for the post in Vest-Agder, the Norwegian Directorate for Health led by Karl Evang suggested that another candidate be hired, however, Minister of Health Olav Gjærevoll overturned the recommendation and gave Lange the position. This was criticized as a politicized appointment

Aase Bye

Aase Synnøve Bye was a Norwegian actress, known from stage, film and television. She was born in Kristiania as a daughter of merchant Anders Bye, the first marriage, to physician Carl Christian Christensen, only lasted from August 1927 to 1929. In 1929 she married shipbroker Jan Kurt Dedichen, Dedichen was a son of chemist Georg Dedichen and grandson of Edvard Brandes, but died in September 1935. In 1948 she married editor-in-chief Trygve Jacob Broch Hoff, Bye made her stage debut at the National Theatre in 1923, and was hailed as a talent by Bjørn Bjørnson. Except for short interruptions because of illness or other engagements, she remained faithful to the theater for over 50 years and her first role was Solveig in Ibsens Peer Gynt, which was such a successful debut that she had 200 kr in acknowledgment of the theater secretary JP Bull. The following year she portrayed Sonja in the first night of Reisen til Julestjernen and she also appeared in silent films, sound films and on television. Bye was decorated as a Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1974, Aase Byes testament returned everything she owned to Aase Byes endowment to support the artists deserved. Among the recipients are well-known actors such as Jan Grønli, Bjarte Hjelmeland and Henny Moan, and opera singer Ragnhild Heiland Sørensen
