The Majestic Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 245 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan. It is one of the largest Broadway theatres with 1,645 seats, among the notable shows that have premiered at the Majestic are Carousel, South Pacific, The Music Man, Camelot, A Little Night Music, and The Wiz. It was also the home of 42nd Street and the third home of 1776. The theatre has housed The Phantom of the Opera since it opened on January 26,1988, with a record-breaking 12,139 performances to date, it is currently the longest-running production in Broadway history. Designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp, the present-day Majestic was constructed by the Chanin Brothers as part of an entertainment complex including the John Golden Theatre, jacobs Theatre, and the Milford Plaza hotel. It opened on March 28,1927 with the musical Rufus LeMaires Affairs, the Majestic was purchased by the Shubert brothers during the Great Depression and currently is owned and operated by the Shubert Organization. Bert Williams

Bert Williams was a Bahamian American and was one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time. He was by far the best-selling black recording artist before 1920, in 1918, the New York Dramatic Mirror called Williams one of the great comedians of the world. Williams was a key figure in the development of African-American entertainment, Fields, who appeared in productions with Williams, described him as the funniest man I ever saw – and the saddest man I ever knew. Williams was born in Nassau, The Bahamas, on November 12,1874, to Frederick Williams Jr. at the age of 11, Bert permanently emigrated with his parents, moving to Florida. The family later moved to Riverside, California, where he graduated from Riverside High School, in 1893, while still a teenager, he joined different West Coast minstrel shows, including Martin and Seligs Mastodon Minstrels, where he first met his future professional partner, George Walker. He and Walker performed song-and-dance numbers, comic dialogues and skits and they fell into stereotypical vaudevillian roles, originally Williams portrayed a slick conniver, while Walker played the dumb coon victim of Williams schemes. However, they discovered that they got a better reaction by switching roles. The sharp-featured and slender Walker eventually developed a persona as a strutting dandy, despite his thickset physique, Williams was a master of body language and physical stage business. A New York Times reviewer wrote, He holds a face for minutes at a time, seemingly, in late 1896, the pair were added to The Gold Bug, a struggling musical. The show did not survive, but Williams & Walker got good reviews and they headlined the Koster and Bials vaudeville house for 36 weeks in 1896-97, where their spirited version of the cakewalk helped popularize the dance. The pair performed in blackface, as was customary at the time. Williams also made his first recordings in 1896, but none are known to survive, while playing off the coon formula, Williams & Walkers act and demeanor subtly undermined it as well. He even would pull over a wig full of hair in order to help conceal his wavy hair. In this way, they drew a contrast between their real-life comportment and the characters they portrayed onstage. However, this aspect of their act was enough that some black newspapers still criticized the duo for failing to uplift the dignity of their race. Lottie was an eight years Berts senior. Thus, the match seemed odd to some who knew the gregarious and constantly traveling Williams, but all who knew them considered them a happy couple. Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler was an Austrian late-Romantic composer, and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century, born in Bohemia as a German-speaking Jew of humble circumstances, Mahler displayed his musical gifts at an early age. During his ten years in Vienna, Mahler—who had converted to Catholicism to secure the regular opposition. Late in his life he was director of New Yorks Metropolitan Opera. Mahlers œuvre is relatively limited, for much of his composing was necessarily a part-time activity while he earned his living as a conductor. Some of Mahlers immediate musical successors included the composers of the Second Viennese School, notably Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten are among later 20th-century composers who admired and were influenced by Mahler. The International Gustav Mahler Institute was established in 1955 to honour the composers life, the Mahler family came from eastern Bohemia and were of humble circumstances, the composers grandmother had been a street pedlar. Bohemia was then part of the Austrian Empire, the Mahler family belonged to a German-speaking minority among Bohemians, from this background the future composer developed early on a permanent sense of exile, always an intruder, never welcomed. Bernhard Mahler, the son and the composers father, elevated himself to the ranks of the petite bourgeoisie by becoming a coachman. He bought a modest house in the village of Kalischt, halfway between Prague in Bohemia and Brno in Moravia, in the center of todays Czech Republic. Bernhards wife, Marie, gave birth to the first of the couples 14 children, a son Isidor, two years later, on 7 July 1860, their second son, Gustav, was born. In December 1860, Bernhard Mahler moved with his wife and infant son, Gustav, to the town of Iglau,25 km to the south-east, the family grew rapidly, but of the 12 children born to the family in Iglau only six survived infancy. All of these elements would later contribute to his musical vocabulary. When he was four years old, Gustav discovered his grandparents piano and he developed his performing skills sufficiently to be considered a local Wunderkind and gave his first public performance at the town theatre when he was ten years old. Although Gustav loved making music, his reports from the Iglau Gymnasium portrayed him as absent-minded. In 1871, in the hope of improving the results, his father sent him to the New Town Gymnasium in Prague. In 1874 he suffered a personal loss when his younger brother Ernst died after a long illness. Symphony No.6 in A minor by Gustav Mahler is a symphony in four movements, composed in 1903 and 1904. Mahler conducted the works first performance at the Saalbau concert hall in Essen on May 27,1906 and it is sometimes referred to by the nickname Tragische. This contrasts with the tragic, even nihilistic, ending of No.6, both Alban Berg and Anton Webern praised the work when they first heard it. Berg expressed his opinion of the stature of this symphony in a 1908 letter to Webern, Es gibt doch nur eine VI. trotz der Pastorale. While at the beginning of each movement Mahler calls for two harps, at one point in the Andante he calls for several, and at one point in the Scherzo he writes 4 harps. Often he does not specify a set number, especially in the last movement, while the first version of the score included whip or slapstick and tambourine, these were removed over the course of Mahlers extensive revisions. The status of the nickname is problematic. Mahler did not title the symphony when he composed it, or at its first performance or first publication, when he allowed Richard Specht to analyse the work and Alexander von Zemlinsky to arrange the symphony, he did not authorize any sort of nickname for the symphony. He had, as well, decisively rejected and disavowed the titles of his symphonies by 1900. Only the words Sechste Sinfonie appeared on the programme for the performance in Munich on November 8,1906, nor does the word Tragische appear on any of the scores that C. F. Kahnt published, in Spechts officially approved Thematische Führer or on Zemlinskys piano duet transcription, by contrast, in his Gustav Mahler memoir, Bruno Walter claimed that Mahler called his Tragic Symphony. Additionally, the programme for the first Vienna performance refers to the work as Sechste Sinfonie, the work, in four movements, lasts around 80 minutes. The order of the movements is a matter of debate. Scholars such as Norman Del Mar have argued for the Andante/Scherzo order of the inner movements, the 1963 Erwin Ratz edition publishes the score with the movements ordered to Mahlers original conception. Del Mar, among others, has criticised the Ratz edition for its lack of evidence to justify the Scherzo/Andante order. The Scherzo and the first movement utilise identical keys, A minor at the beginning, Matthews, Paul Banks and scholar Warren Darcy have independently proposed the idea of two separate editions of the symphony, one to accommodate each version of the order of the inner movements. Formally, the symphony is one of Mahlers most outwardly conventional, the first three movements are relatively traditional in structure and character, with a standard sonata form first movement leading to the middle movements – one a scherzo-with-trios, the other slow. However, attempts to analyze the vast finale in terms of the sonata archetype have encountered serious difficulties, the chords are played by trumpets and oboes when first heard, with the trumpets sounding most loudly in the first chord and the oboes in the second

Essen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its population of approximately 589,000 makes it the ninth-largest city in Germany and it is the central city of the northern part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area and seat to several of the regions authorities. Founded around 845, Essen remained a town within the sphere of influence of an important ecclesiastical principality until the onset of industrialization. The city then — especially through the Krupp family iron works — became one of Germanys most important coal and steel centers. Essen, until the 1970s, attracted workers from all over the country, following the region-wide decline of heavy industries in the last decades of the 20th century, the city has seen the development of a strong tertiary sector of the economy. Although it is the most indebted city in Germany, Essen continues to pursue its redevelopment plans, notable accomplishments in recent years include the title of European Capital of Culture on behalf of the whole Ruhr area in 2010 and the selection as the European Green Capital for 2017. In 1958, Essen was chosen to serve as the seat to a Roman Catholic diocese, in early 2003, the universities of Essen and the nearby city of Duisburg were merged into the University of Duisburg-Essen with campuses in both cities and a university hospital in Essen. Essen is located in the centre of the Ruhr area, one of the largest urban areas in Europe, comprising eleven independent cities and four districts with some 5.3 million inhabitants. The city limits of Essen itself are 87 km long and border ten cities, five independent and five kreisangehörig, the city extends over 21 km from north to south and 17 km from west to east, mainly north of the River Ruhr. The Ruhr forms the Lake Baldeney reservoir in the boroughs of Fischlaken, Kupferdreh, the lake, a popular recreational area, dates from 1931 to 1933, when some thousands of unemployed coal miners dredged it with primitive tools. Generally, large areas south of the River Ruhr are quite green and are quoted as examples of rural structures in the otherwise relatively densely populated central Ruhr area. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Essen with 9. 2% of its covered by recreational green is the greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city has been shortlisted for the title of European Green Capital two consecutive times, for 2016 and 2017, winning for 2017, the city was singled out for its exemplary practices in protecting and enhancing nature and biodiversity and efforts to reduce water consumption. Essen participates in a variety of networks and initiatives to reduce gas emissions. The lowest point can be found in the borough of Karnap at 26.5 m. The average elevation is 116 m, Essen comprises fifty boroughs which in turn are grouped into nine suburban districts often named after the most important boroughs. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra based in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne has the longest continuous history of music of any Australian city. The MSO performs to more than 200,000 people in Melbourne and its principal venue is Hamer Hall. The Orchestra has its own choir, the MSO Chorus, following integration with the Melbourne Chorale in 2008, the orchestra relies on funding by the Victorian State Government and the Federal government and support from private corporations and donors. It is supported by Symphony Services International, in 1934, the MSO became one of the Australian Broadcasting Commissions radio orchestras. In 1949, the took on the new name of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra. In 1965, the name reverted to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The MSOs longest serving chief conductor was Hiroyuki Iwaki, who was named Conductor Laureate of the orchestra in 1989, the orchestras most recent Chief Conductor, Sir Andrew Davis, was appointed in June 2012. Sir Andrew Davis gave his inaugural concerts as the MSOs Chief Conductor in 2013, the MSO also works with Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey and guest conductors like Thomas Adès, John Adams, Tan Dun, Markus Stenz and Simone Young. Dale Barltrop and Eoin Andersen have shared the position of concertmaster since the start of 2015 since Wilma Smith stepped down at the end of the 2014 season. The MSO was the first Australian orchestra to perform overseas, and its overseas tours – the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Europe, China, St Petersburg, Russia and Japan – have gained it widespread international recognition. In January 2007 the Orchestra embarked on its second European tour, visiting five cities in Spain, Paris, Berlin, the MSO has collaborated with a number of contemporary artists from pop and rock, to techno and electronic. Amelita Galli-Curci was an Italian coloratura soprano. She was one of the most popular singers of the 20th century. She was born as Amelita Galli into a family in Milan. She was inspired to sing by her grandmother, operatic composer Pietro Mascagni also encouraged Galli-Curcis singing ambitions. By her own choice, Galli-Curcis voice was largely self-trained and she honed her technique by listening to other sopranos, reading old singing-method books, and doing piano exercises with her voice instead of using a keyboard. The soprano had toured widely in Europe, Russia and South America, in 1915, she sang two performances of Lucia di Lammermoor with Enrico Caruso in Buenos Aires. These were to be her only appearances with the great tenor, though they later appeared in concert. Galli-Curci and Caruso also acted as godparents for the son of the Sicilian tenor Giulio Crimi, Galli-Curci toured extensively throughout her career, including a 1924 Great Britain concert tour, where she appeared in 20 cities and a tour of Australia a year later. Galli-Curci arrived in the United States in the autumn of 1916 as a virtual unknown, also in 1916, Galli-Curci signed a recording contract with the Victor Talking Machine Company and recorded exclusively for the company until 1930. On 14 November 1921, While still under contract with the Chicago Opera and she was one of few singers who were contracted to both opera companies simultaneously. Galli-Curci remained at the Met until her retirement from the stage nine years later. Galli-Curci built and maintained an estate called Sul Monte in Highmount, New York, in the nearby village of Margaretville a theater was erected and named in her honor. She returned the favor by performing there on its opening night, weary of opera house politics and convinced that opera was a dying art form, Galli-Curci retired from the operatic stage in January 1930 to concentrate instead on concert performances. Throat problems and the pitching of top notes had plagued her for several years. Great care was taken during her surgery, which was performed under local anesthesia, a nerve to her larynx, the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve, is thought to have been damaged, resulting in the loss of her ability to sing high pitches. Trani listen is a seaport of Apulia, in southern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea,40 kilometres by railway West-Northwest of Bari. The town has become one of the capital cities of the new Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. The city of Turenum appears for the first time in the Tabula Peutingeriana, the name, also spelled Tirenum, was that of the Greek hero Diomedes. The city was occupied by the Lombards and the Byzantines. First certain news of a settlement in Trani, however. The most flourishing age of Trani was the 11th century, when it became a see in place of Canosa. Its port, well placed for the Crusades, then developed greatly, in the year 1063 Trani issued the Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris, which is the oldest surviving maritime law code of the Latin West. There was also Jewish community in Trani, which was under the protection of the king until it was given to the Archbishop Samarus during the reign of Henry VI at the end of the 12th century. In that period many great families from the main Italian Maritime Republics established themselves in Trani, Trani, in turn, maintained a consul in Venice from 12th century. The presence of other consulates in many northern Europe centres, even in England and Netherlands, shows Tranis trading, emperor Frederick II built a massive castle in Trani. Under his rule, in the early 13th century, the city reached its highest point of wealth, there was some economic progress during the nineteenth century, and by 1881 the population had reached 25,647. Trani was province capital until the Napoleonic age, when Joachim Murat deprived it of this status in favour of Bari, in 1799, moreover, the French troops provoked a massacre of Tranis population, as it had adhered to the Neapolitan Republic. The Scolanova Synagogue survives and, after centuries as a church, has been rededicated as a synagogue. The church of SantAnna is another medieval former synagogue, located by the Adriatic Coast, between Barletta and Bisceglie, Trani borders with the municipalities of Andria, Barletta, Bisceglie and Corato, in the Province of Bari. Trani has lost its old city walls and bastions, but the 13th-century fort has been restored as a museum

Giuseppe Verdi

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi was an Italian opera composer. Verdi was born near Busseto to a family of moderate means. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, whose works influenced him. In his early operas Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy and he also participated briefly as an elected politician. He surprised the world by returning, after his success with the opera Aida. The baptismal register, prepared on 11 October 1813, lists his parents Carlo, additionally, it lists Verdi as being born yesterday, but since days were often considered to begin at sunset, this could have meant either 9 or 10 October. Verdi himself, following his mother, always celebrated his birthday on 9 October, Verdi had a younger sister, Giuseppa, who died aged 17 in 1833. From the age of four, Verdi was given lessons in Latin and Italian by the village schoolmaster, Baistrocchi. After learning to play the organ, he showed so much interest in music that his parents provided him with a spinet. Verdis gift for music was apparent by 1820–21 when he began his association with the local church, serving in the choir, acting as an altar boy for a while. After Baistrocchis death, Verdi, at the age of eight, Carlo Verdi was energetic in furthering his sons education. something which Verdi tended to hide in later life. He picture emerges of youthful precocity eagerly nurtured by a father and of a sustained, sophisticated. Verdi returned to Busseto regularly to play the organ on Sundays, at age 11, Verdi received schooling in Italian, Latin, the humanities, and rhetoric. By the time he was 12, he began lessons with Ferdinando Provesi, maestro di cappella at San Bartolomeo, director of the music school. This information comes from the Autobiographical Sketch which Verdi dictated to the publisher Giulio Ricordi late in life, in 1879, written, understandably, with the benefit of hindsight, it is not always reliable when dealing with issues more contentious than those of his childhood. The other director of the Philharmonic Society was Antonio Barezzi, a grocer and distiller. The young Verdi did not immediately become involved with the Philharmonic, by June 1827, he had graduated with honours from the Ginnasio and was able to focus solely on music under Provesi. Rigoletto

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play Le roi samuse by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time and it is considered by many to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdis middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his court jester Rigoletto. The operas original title, La maledizione, refers to the placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigolettos encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda likewise falls in love with the Duke, Verdi was commissioned to write a new opera by the La Fenice opera house in Venice in 1850. By this time he was already a composer and had a degree of freedom in choosing the works he would prefer to set to music. He then asked Francesco Maria Piave to examine the play Kean by Alexandre Dumas, père, Verdi soon stumbled upon Victor Hugos five-act play Le roi samuse. He later explained that The subject is grand, immense, and there is a character that is one of the greatest creations that the theatre can boast of, in any country and in all history. It was a controversial subject, and Hugo himself had already had trouble with censorship in France. As Austria at that time controlled much of Northern Italy. Hugos play depicted a king as an immoral and cynical womanizer, from the beginning, Verdi was aware of the risks, as was Piave. In a letter which Verdi wrote to Piave, Use four legs, run through the town, correspondence between a prudent Piave and an already committed Verdi followed, but the two underestimated the power and the intentions of Austrians and remained at risk. The censors considered the Hugo work to verge on lèse majesté, in August, Verdi and Piave prudently retired to Busseto, Verdis hometown, to continue the composition and prepare a defensive scheme. They wrote to the theatre, assuring them that the doubts about the morality of the work were not justified but since very little time was left. Verdi was completely against this solution and preferred instead to have direct negotiations with censors, arguing over each. Shaoxing opera

Shaoxing opera, also known as Yue opera, is the second most popular opera form out of over 360 opera genres in China. Originating in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province in 1906, Yue opera features actresses in male roles, as well as femininity in terms of singing, performing, over time, it grew in popularity. Only Peking opera is more popular and it is highly popular in Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Fujian, while its audiences are all over China. Prior to 1906, Yue opera was initially an entertainment for people in Sheng County and its lyrics are mostly collected from conversations between farmers while they were working. Audiences love these ballads because of their description of daily life. The Second Opium War interfered with the economy of Sheng County, located in the Jiangnan area. Since Sheng County agriculturalists were experiencing difficulty earning their livelihoods, they started to turn this folk art into a source of income. Over years, the accumulation of lyrics built up the source materials for Yue opera. Performers also began to integrate simple acting and accompanying instruments into the folk music and it gradually became well known, both in Sheng County and neighboring counties. At the end of the first month of the lunar year Zhēngyuè in 1906, although these artists had never performed together before, Chen and other residents encouraged them to cooperate. The first performance was thus generated, fortunately, the show turned out to be a great success, and residents were delighted and willing to talk about it. Over time more and more counties invited them to perform, because the musics tones were similar to those of Shange people named this art Small Literal Class. As Small Literal Class expanded in size and popularity, it entered Shanghai theaters, due to its unique, elegant and soft singing style compared with other political and spectacular performances, Yue opera found an audience there. It soon changed its name to ShaoXing Literal Opera in 1916, however, both the singing style and banhu fiddle that ShaoXing Literal Opera utilized were under-developed and vulgar compared with other, more delicate operas in Shanghai. It soon lost its prestige and popularity in this big city, returning to their roots in Sheng County, ShaoXing Literal Opera performers like Jinshui Wang put great effort into improving their performance and singing style. These artists absorbed the essence of different opera styles including Beijing Opera they had seen in Shanghai, during this process, Four Gong Pitch became the remarkable fruit of this blending. This music pitch is extraordinary because it resolved the unnatural status women have when they play male roles, ShaoXing Literal Opera further developed a systematic training in singing style and sound practice. It utilized erhu and other linear fiddles as alternative accompaniments to adjust music, when Jinshui Wang came back to Sheng County, he had been deeply impressed by the prosperous artistic atmosphere in Shanghai

Gambuh is an ancient form of Balinese dance-drama. It is accompanied by musicians in a gamelan gambuh ensemble, Gambuh is one of the oldest surviving forms in Balinese performing arts, dating to the late Majapahit era with very little known change since this time. Emiko Susilo writes, when the dance-dramas of Majapahit came to Bali and it also introduced a new element of narrative to Balinese performing arts that influenced other forms of dance-drama on the island, such as topeng masked dance and arja opera. For centuries it was supported by patronage at the courts of Balis aristocracy. As the courts fell apart in the wars with the Dutch. Like the many arts that formerly depended on royal patronage. In 1997, Susilo observed, In total there are only four groups that perform in the Gambuh style. It is unpopular even among Balinese performers, the dance and music are technically exacting and complex, the dialogue requires knowledge of the Kawi language. Performances are long and, unlike wayang shows, contain no comic relief, combining dance, music, and acting, gambuh draws on the narrative material of the Malat, a series of poems about the fictional Javanese Prince, Raden Panji, an incarnation of Wisnu. A complete gamelan gambuh requires approximately 17 musicians to accompany the dance-drama, the main instruments in gambuh performances are very low bamboo flutes called suling gambuh, between 75 and 100 cm in length and 4 and 5 cm in diameter. There are usually four such flutes, but sometimes as few as two or as many as six, the last three of those instruments—the kenyir, kangsi, and gumanak—are not currently found in any other gamelan ensemble of Bali

Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called kendhang which register the beat, other instruments include xylophones, bamboo flutes, a bowed instrument called a rebab, and even vocalists called sindhen. Although the popularity of gamelan has declined since the introduction of pop music, gamelan is still played on formal occasions. For most Indonesians, gamelan is an part of Indonesian culture. The word gamelan comes from the low Javanese word gamel, which may refer to a type of mallet used to strike instruments or the act of striking with a mallet. The term karawitan refers to classical music and performance practice. The word derives from the Javanese word of Sanskrit origin, rawit, another word from this root, pangrawit, means a person with such sense, and is used as an honorific when discussing esteemed gamelan musicians. The gamelan predates the Hindu-Buddhist culture that dominated Indonesia in its earliest records, the instruments developed into their current form during the Majapahit Empire. In contrast to the heavy Indian influence in art forms, the only obvious Indian influence in gamelan music is in the Javanese style of singing. In Javanese mythology, the gamelan was created by Sang Hyang Guru in Saka era 167 and he needed a signal to summon the gods and thus invented the gong. For more complex messages, he invented two other gongs, thus forming the original gamelan set, the earliest image of a musical ensemble is found on the 8th century Borobudur temple, Central Java. Musical instruments such as the flute, bells, drums in various sizes, lute. However it lacks metallophones and xylophones, nevertheless, the image of this musical ensemble is suggested to be the ancient form of the gamelan. In the palaces of Java the oldest known ensembles, Gamelan Munggang and these formed the basis of a loud style of music. Bali is an island and province of Indonesia. The province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller neighbouring islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and it is located at the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Its capital, Denpasar, is located in the part of the island. With a population of 3,890,757 in the 2010 census, and 4,225,000 as of January 2014, the island is home to most of Indonesias Hindu minority. According to the 2010 Census,83. 5% of Balis population adhered to Balinese Hinduism, followed by 13. 4% Muslim, Christianity at 2. 5%, Bali is a popular tourist destination, which has seen a significant rise in tourists since the 1980s. Tourism-related business makes up 80% of its economy and it is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. The Indonesian International Film Festival is held every year in Bali, in March 2017, Tripadvisor named the island the worlds top destination in its Travelers choice award. Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species, in this area alone over 500 reef building coral species can be found. For comparison, this is about 7 times as many as in the entire Caribbean, most recently, Bali was the host of the 2011 ASEAN Summit,2013 APEC and Miss World 2013. Bali is the home of the Subak Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bali was inhabited around 2000 BC by Austronesian people who migrated originally from Southeast Asia and Oceania through Maritime Southeast Asia. Culturally and linguistically, the Balinese are closely related to the people of the Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the islands west. In ancient Bali, nine Hindu sects existed, namely Pasupata, Bhairawa, Siwa Shidanta, Waisnawa, Bodha, Brahma, Resi, Sora, each sect revered a specific deity as its personal Godhead. Inscriptions from 896 and 911 dont mention a king, until 914 and they also reveal an independent Bali, with a distinct dialect, where Buddhism and Sivaism were practiced simultaneously. Mpu Sindoks great-granddaughter, Mahendradatta, married the Bali king Udayana Warmadewa around 989 and this marriage also brought more Hinduism and Javanese culture to Bali. Suradhipa reigned from 1115 to 1119, and Jayasakti from 1146 until 1150, jayapangus appears on inscriptions between 1178 and 1181, while Adikuntiketana and his son Paramesvara in 1204. Balinese culture was influenced by Indian, Chinese, and particularly Hindu culture. The name Bali dwipa has been discovered from inscriptions, including the Blanjong pillar inscription written by Sri Kesari Warmadewa in 914 AD. It was during this time that the people developed their complex irrigation system subak to grow rice in wet-field cultivation, some religious and cultural traditions still practiced today can be traced to this period

Frog Legs Rag

Frog Legs Rag is a classic rag composed by James Scott and published by John Stillwell Stark in December 1906. It was James Scotts first commercial success, prior to this composition Scott had published marches. With Frog Legs Rag, Scott embarked upon a career as a successful, in 1909, Scott Joplin orchestrated for Frog Legs Rag to be published by John Stillwell Stark, Joplins publisher, and his company, Stark Music Company. Edward A. Berlin, author of the Joplin biography King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin, however, he considers assertions of personal acquaintance between the two men to be speculation. Other music historians take a different view, Ragtime encyclopedist David A. Jasen identifies a number of characteristic James Scott compositional devices in this early work. The crisp freshness of the A section gives way to a use in the B section of the Maple Leaf Rag B section. The lyrical C is a development in feeling on the A section. The D section introduces us to one of Scotts favorite devices and this develops the feel of B, once again with the use of similar chords. The modulation at the trio is unusual in that it goes to the dominant instead of the subdominant, unlike Joplin, who lengthened traditional ragtime phrasing, Scott explored the genres dynamic qualities with shortened phrasings. Among songs published by Stark, Frog Legs Rag was second in sales after Joplins Maple Leaf Rag, Frog Legs Rag has been described as brash and exuberant. James Scott (composer)

James Sylvester Scott was an African-American ragtime composer, regarded as one of the three most important composers of classic ragtime, along with Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb. He was born in Neosho, Missouri to James Scott Sr. and Molly Thomas Scott, in 1901 his family moved to Carthage, Missouri, where he attended Lincoln High School. In 1902 he began working at the store of Charles L. Dumars, first washing windows, then demonstrating music at the piano as a song plugger. Demand for his music convinced Dumars to print the first of Scotts published compositions, A Summer Breeze - March and Two Step, in 1903. By 1904, two compositions by Scott, Fascinator March and On the Pike March were published and sold well. Ragtime Historians Rudi Blesh and Harriet Janis account that Scott went to St. Louis and he located Joplin and asked if he would listen to one of his ragtime compositions. Upon hearing the rag, Joplin introduced him to his own publisher, John Stillwell Stark, Stark published the rag a year later as Frog Legs Rag. It quickly became a hit and was second in sales in the Stark catalogue only to that of Joplins own Maple Leaf Rag, Scott became a regular contributor to the Stark catalogue until 1922. In 1914 Scott moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he married Nora Johnson, taught music and those that knew him recall that theater work was a large part of his activity. In the last years of his life, Scott busied himself with teaching, composing and leading a band that played for various beer parks. With the arrival of sound movies, however, his fortunes declined and he lost his theater work, his wife died without child, and his health deteriorated. He moved in with his cousin Ruth Callahan in Kansas City, Kansas, Scott died at Douglas Hospital on August 30,1938 at age 52 and was laid beside his wife in Westlawn Cemetery. Scotts best-known compositions include Climax Rag, Frog Legs Rag, Grace and Beauty, Ophelia Rag, Scott was a cousin of blues singer Ada Brown. In the Third Season of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, Scott is portrayed by an actor in the episode Spaghetti. Harry Von Tilzer

Harry Von Tilzer was a very popular United States songwriter. Von Tilzer was born in Detroit, Michigan under the name Harry Gumm and his parents, Sarah and Jacob Gumbinsky, were Polish Jewish immigrants. Harry ran away and joined a circus at age 14. So impressive seemed the transformation that eventually all his brothers changed their last name to match his, Harry soon proved successful playing piano and calliope and writing new tunes and incidental music for shows. He continued doing this for Burlesque and Vaudeville shows for some years, in 1898 he sold his song My Old New Hampshire Home to a publisher for $15, and watched it become a national hit, selling over two million copies of the sheet music. This prompted him to become a professional songwriter and he was made a partner of the Shapiro Bernstein Publishing Company. His 1900 number A Bird in a Gilded Cage became one of the biggest hits of the time, Von Tilzer became one of the best-known Tin Pan Alley songwriters. In 1902 Von Tilzer formed his own publishing company, where he was joined by his younger brother Albert Von Tilzer. Harry Von Tilzers hits included A Bird in a Gilded Cage, The Cubanola Glide, Wait Til The Sun Shines Nellie, Old King Tut, All Alone, Mariutch, The Ragtime Goblin Man, I Love My Wife, But Oh You Kid. They Always Pick On Me, I Want A Girl, And The Green Grass Grew All Around, On the Old Fall River Line, Under the Anheuser Bush and he died in New York City on January 10,1946.
