Art Gallery of Hamilton

Art Gallery of Hamilton, is located in the heart of downtown Hamilton, Ontario on King Street West. One of the oldest public art galleries in Canada and the third largest with a collection of over 10,000 works of art seeing close to 290,000 visitors a year. Today, the William Blair Bruce memorial donation is displayed in a dramatic salon-style hanging in what is the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s third home, freda Farrell Waldon was one of the founding members of the Womens Committee of the Gallery. From 1914 until 1953, the Gallery’s first home was the floor of the Hamilton Public Library building located on Main Street West near James Street. In 1947, the Gallery was a member of the Southern Ontario Gallery Group. In December 1953, a new gallery was opened at Forsyth Avenue. A little over a decade later, McMaster University unveiled plans to expropriate the lands on which the Gallery was built, in 1977, the Gallery opened in its present location in the heart of the city as part of a downtown redevelopment project. The AGH primary collection is based on Canadian historical, Canadian contemporary, the collection of historical Canadian art was developed through the meticulous promotion of local, regional and national artists over the Gallerys 100-year history. The European collection spans Baroque through Post-Impressionist Art, with emphasis on the French, British. MacDonald soon inaugurated the Annual Winter Exhibition at the Gallery, this exhibition was held from 1948-1973. These juried exhibitions provided artists with an important exhibition venue and also works to Hamilton that might be acquired by the Gallery. Usually about one hundred works were featured in exhibition, with the purchase prize entering the AGH permanent collection. In this way, many important works were acquired, such as A. J. Casson’s First Snow, Lilias Torrance Newton’s Keith MacIver, and the iconic Horse and Train by Alex Colville. ”Each year, the Gallery organizes, hosts and/or circulates approximately 25-30 exhibitions throughout the world

The London Group

The London Group is a society based in London, England, created to offer additional exhibiting opportunities to artists besides the Royal Academy of Arts. Formed in 1913, it is one of the oldest artist led organisations in the world and it was formed from the merger of the Camden Town Group, an all-male group, and the Fitzroy Street Group. It holds open submission exhibitions for members and guest artists, the London Group is composed of working artists. All forms of art are represented, the group functions democratically without dogma or style. It has a constitution, annually elected officers, working committees. There are usually between 80 and 100 members and a fee is charged to cover gallery hire and organisational costs. The group has no permanent exhibition venue and rents space in London, most recently at the Menier Gallery, Bankside Gallery. New members are elected most years, from nominations made by current members, the London Group emerged from a merger of the Fitzroy Street Group and the male member only Camden Town Group organization. Another early female member was Marjorie Sherlock, throughout its history The London Group has held open submission exhibitions to encourage and support other artists struggling to get their work shown in public. The open submissions are shown along with the work of existing members, celebrated the first 50 years of the London Group in 1963 and it highlighted the role played by women and emigre artists in its membership. One of the oldest standing artist led organisations in the world, in 2011 the open exhibition presented over 140 artists at the Cello Factory. Goupil & Cie

Goupil & Cie was a leading art dealership in 19th-century France, with headquarters in Paris. Instrumental for this expansion were the Ateliers Photographiques, a plant north of Paris, in Asnières, the leading figure was Adolphe Goupil. His daughter Marie married the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, after several partnerships from 1827 onwards, Adolphe Goupil formed Goupil & Cie in 1850. Until 1861 the firm concentrated on buying, selling and editing prints, Goupils reproductions made Jean-Léon Gérôme, in particular, a well known artist. Vincent van Gogh fell ill and retired in 1872, but left his money in the firm until 1878 and his duties were taken over by Albert Goupil, son of Adolphe. When, in 1878, the van Gogh shares were finally withdrawn, from then on the firm was completely in the hands of the Goupil family and their sons-in-law Léon Boussod and René Valadon. In 1884 the Goupil family retired and the firm was transformed and renamed Boussod, Valadon & Cie. No.19 became a sales room when the administration was moved to Rue Chaptal. From 1881 this branch was run by Theo van Gogh, Paris 2 Place de lOpéra Goupils main sales room displaying Old Masters as well as the contemporary Salon New York 289 Broadway Established in 1846 by Léon Goupil. W. van Gogh, after his retirement this branch was run by V. Schmidt, moved to 25 Bedford Street, Strand in 1875 when Goupil & Cie took over Holloway & Sons and their salerooms. Goupils manager in London was at this time Charles Obach, Uncle Cent, as he was called by his nephews, moved to Paris in 1858 and took residence at 9 Rue Chaptal, which housed Goupils headquarters, too. In 1861, he became partner of Goupil & Cie, but retired in 1872, due to his health, to settle in Princenhage for the summers. Six years later, he withdrew his shares, as Uncle Cent had no children, his nephews were evidently supposed to follow him up in the firm, Vincent entered in 1869, Theo in 1873. When Vincent was sacked by Léon Boussod in 1876, the balance between the shareholders suffered - and so Theo got his chance, called to the Paris office for the time of the World Fair 1878, he was offered to stay in Paris. In these years, Vincent took up his vocation and began to study art, based on the Cours de dessin, Gérôme and edited by Goupil & Cie, 1868–1873. In 1880, he asked his former director Herman Gijsbert Tersteeg, at Goupils in The Hague, to him a copy. Vorticism

Vorticism was a short-lived modernist movement in British art and poetry of the early 20th century, partly inspired by Cubism. Ultimately, it was their witnessing of unfolding human disaster in World War I that drained these artists of their Vorticist zeal, Vorticism was based in London but was international in make-up and ambition. Lewis himself saw Vorticism as an independent alternative to Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism, though the style grew out of Cubism, it is more closely related to Futurism in its embrace of dynamism, the machine age and all things modern. However, Vorticism diverged from Futurism in the way it tried to capture movement in an image, in a Vorticist painting modern life is shown as an array of bold lines and harsh colours drawing the viewers eye into the centre of the canvas. The Vorticists published two issues of the literary magazine BLAST, edited by Lewis, in June 1914 and July 1915 and it contained work by Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot as well as by the Vorticists themselves. Its typographical adventurousness was cited by El Lissitzky as one of the forerunners of the revolution in graphic design in the 1920s and 1930s. This work was contemporary with and comparable to abstraction by European artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, František Kupka, the Vorticists held only one exhibition, in 1915, at the Doré Gallery in London. The main section of the exhibition included work by Jessica Dismorr, Frederick Etchells, Lewis, Gaudier-Brzeska, William Roberts, Helen Saunders, there was a smaller section area titled Those Invited To Show that included several other artists. Jacob Epstein was notably not represented, although did have his drawings reproduced in BLAST, after this, the movement broke up, largely due to the onset of World War I and public apathy towards the work. Gaudier-Brzeska was killed in service, while leading figures such as Epstein distanced themselves stylistically from Lewis. A brief attempt by Lewis to revive the movement in 1920 under the name Group X proved unsuccessful, Pound, however, through his correspondence with Lewis, was understood to hold a commitment to the goals of the movement as much as forty years after its demise. A1956 exhibition at the Tate Gallery was called Wyndham Lewis and Vorticism and this angered other members of the group. Bomberg and Roberts both protested strongly the assertion of Lewis, which was printed in the catalogue, Vorticism, in fact, was what I, personally, did. London /ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the south east of the island of Great Britain and it was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. Londons ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1. 12-square-mile medieval boundaries. London is a global city in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism. It is crowned as the worlds largest financial centre and has the fifth- or sixth-largest metropolitan area GDP in the world, London is a world cultural capital. It is the worlds most-visited city as measured by international arrivals and has the worlds largest city airport system measured by passenger traffic, London is the worlds leading investment destination, hosting more international retailers and ultra high-net-worth individuals than any other city. Londons universities form the largest concentration of education institutes in Europe. In 2012, London became the first city to have hosted the modern Summer Olympic Games three times, London has a diverse range of people and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken in the region. Its estimated mid-2015 municipal population was 8,673,713, the largest of any city in the European Union, Londons urban area is the second most populous in the EU, after Paris, with 9,787,426 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The citys metropolitan area is the most populous in the EU with 13,879,757 inhabitants, the city-region therefore has a similar land area and population to that of the New York metropolitan area. London was the worlds most populous city from around 1831 to 1925, Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Pauls Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world, the etymology of London is uncertain. It is an ancient name, found in sources from the 2nd century and it is recorded c.121 as Londinium, which points to Romano-British origin, and hand-written Roman tablets recovered in the city originating from AD 65/70-80 include the word Londinio. The earliest attempted explanation, now disregarded, is attributed to Geoffrey of Monmouth in Historia Regum Britanniae and this had it that the name originated from a supposed King Lud, who had allegedly taken over the city and named it Kaerlud. From 1898, it was accepted that the name was of Celtic origin and meant place belonging to a man called *Londinos. The ultimate difficulty lies in reconciling the Latin form Londinium with the modern Welsh Llundain, which should demand a form *lōndinion, from earlier *loundiniom. The possibility cannot be ruled out that the Welsh name was borrowed back in from English at a later date, and thus cannot be used as a basis from which to reconstruct the original name. Until 1889, the name London officially applied only to the City of London, two recent discoveries indicate probable very early settlements near the Thames in the London area

Wyndham Lewis

Percy Wyndham Lewis was an English writer, painter and critic. He was a co-founder of the Vorticist movement in art, and edited the magazine of the Vorticists. His novels include his pre-World War I-era novel Tarr, and The Human Age, a fourth volume of The Human Age, The Trial of Man, was begun by Lewis but left in a fragmentary state at the time of his death. He also wrote two volumes, Blasting and Bombardiering and Rude Assignment, A Narrative of my Career Up-to-Date. Lewis was reputedly born on his fathers yacht off the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and his British mother and American father separated about 1893. Mainly residing in London from 1908, Lewis published his first work in Ford Madox Fords The English Review in 1909 and he was a founder-member of the Camden Town Group in 1911. In 1912 he exhibited his Cubo-Futurist illustrations to Timon of Athens and this brought him into close contact with the Bloomsbury Group, particularly Roger Fry and Clive Bell, with whom he soon fell out. In 1912 he was commissioned to produce a mural, a drop curtain, and more designs for The Cave of the Golden Calf. It was in the years 1913–15 that he developed the style of abstraction for which he is best known today. Lewis found the structure of Cubist painting appealing, but said it did not seem alive compared to Futurist art. Vorticism combined the two movements in a strikingly dramatic critique of modernity, though he was later savagely critical of Bergson, he admitted in a letter to Theodore Weiss that he began by embracing his evolutionary system. Nietzsche was an important influence. He walked out with several Omega artists to start a workshop called the Rebel Art Centre. The Centre operated for four months, but it gave birth to the Vorticist group. In BLAST Lewis wrote the manifesto, several essays expounding his Vorticist aesthetic. The magazine also included reproductions of now lost Vorticist works by Lewis, Lewis was posted to the western front, and served as a second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. It was dangerous work and he made vivid accounts of narrow misses, after the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, he was appointed as an official war artist for both the Canadian and British governments, beginning work in December 1917. For the Canadians he painted A Canadian Gun-Pit from sketches made on Vimy Ridge, for the British he painted one of his best known works, A Battery Shelled, drawing on his own experience in charge of a 6-inch howitzer at Ypres

Suffragette

Suffragettes were members of womens organizations in the late-19th and early-20th centuries which advocated the extension of the franchise, or the right to vote in public elections, to women. It particularly refers to militants in the United Kingdom such as members of the Womens Social and Political Union, suffragist is a more general term for members of the suffrage movement. The term suffragette is particularly associated with activists in the British WSPU, led by Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, Women in South Australia achieved the same right and became the first to obtain the right to stand for parliament in 1895. Women in Britain over the age of 30, meeting certain property qualifications, were given the right to vote in 1918, opinion amongst historians today is divided as to whether the militant tactics of the suffragettes helped or hindered their cause. British suffragettes were mostly women from upper and middle-class backgrounds, frustrated by their social, mill introduced the idea of womens suffrage on the platform he presented to the British electorate in 1865. He was subsequently joined by men and women fighting for the same cause. The term suffragette was first used as a term of derision by the journalist Charles E, hands in the London Daily Mail to describe activists in the movement for womens suffrage, in particular members of the Womens Social and Political Union. But the women he intended to ridicule embraced the term saying suffraGETtes implied not only that they wanted the vote, the National Union of Womens Suffrage Societies, founded in 1897, was formed from local suffrage societies. The union was led by Millicent Fawcett, who believed in constitutional campaigning, issuing leaflets, organising meetings and presenting petitions, in 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst founded a new organisation, the Womens Social and Political Union. She thought the movement would have to become radical and militant if it was going to be effective, the Daily Mail gave them the name Suffragettes. Some radical techniques used by the suffragettes, especially hunger strikes, were learned from Russian exiles from tsarism who had escaped to England, many suffragists at the time, and most historians since, have argued that the actions of the militant suffragettes damaged their cause. Opponents at the time saw evidence that women were too emotional, from 1909, the Pank-A-Squith board game was sold by the WSPU to raise awareness of their campaign and raise money. The name is derived from Pankhurst the surname of the leaders of the WSPU, and Asquith, the surname of the Prime Minister at the time and a largely hated figure by the movement. The Peoples History Museum in Manchester has a Pank-A-Squith board game on display in the main galleries, one suffragette, Emily Davison, died under the Kings horse Anmer at the Epsom Derby of 4 June 1913. It is debated whether she was trying to pin a Votes for Women banner on the Kings horse or not, many of her fellow suffragettes were imprisoned and refused food as a scare tactic against the government. The Liberal government of the day led by Asquith responded with the Cat, another prominent British Suffragette, Sophia Duleep Singh was almost forgotten for 70 years. In the early-20th century until the First World War, approximately one thousand suffragettes were imprisoned in Britain, most early incarcerations were for public order offences and failure to pay outstanding fines. The first suffragettes to be imprisoned were Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney in October 1905 and this cause was taken up by the Womens Social and Political Union, a large organisation in Britain, that lobbied for womens suffrage led by militant suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst

She grew up in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. In 1898, she travelled to Paris and Italy and she lived in Bloomsbury, and witnessed Black Friday. At the beginning of the 20th century, the movement, frustrated by a failure to achieve equal voting rights for women. Richardson was a supporter of Pankhurst and a member of the WSPU. Richardson claimed to be at the Epsom races on Derby Day,4 June 1913, Emily Davison died in Epsom Cottage Hospital, Mary Richardson was reportedly chased and beaten by an angry mob but was given refuge in Epsom Downs station by a railway porter. She committed a number of acts of arson, smashed windows at the Home Office and she was arrested nine times, receiving prison terms totalling more than three years. She was one of the first two women force-fed under the 1913 Cat and Mouse Act in HM Prison Holloway. Richardsons most famous act of defiance occurred on 10 March 1914 when she entered the National Gallery in London, justice is an element of beauty as much as colour and outline on canvas. Mrs Pankhurst seeks to procure justice for womanhood, and for this she is being murdered by a Government of Iscariot politicians. In 1932, after forming the belief that fascism was the path to a Greater Britain, Richardson joined the British Union of Fascists. Richardson rose quickly through the BUF ranks and by 1934 was Chief Organiser for the Womens Section of the party and she left within two years after becoming disillusioned with the sincerity of its policy on women. Two other prominent suffragette leaders to high office in the BUF were Norah Elam. Richardson published her autobiography, Laugh a Defiance, in 1953 and she died at her flat in Hastings on 7 November 1961. Rokeby Venus

The Rokeby Venus is a painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. The painting is in the National Gallery, London, numerous works, from the ancient to the baroque, have been cited as sources of inspiration for Velázquez. The nude Venuses of the Italian painters, such as Giorgiones Sleeping Venus, in this work, Velázquez combined two established poses for Venus, recumbent on a couch or a bed, and gazing at a mirror. She is often described as looking at herself on the mirror and this phenomenon is known as the Venus effect. In a number of ways the painting represents a departure, through its central use of a mirror. The Rokeby Venus is the surviving female nude by Velázquez. Nudes were extremely rare in seventeenth-century Spanish art, which was policed actively by members of the Spanish Inquisition, in 1906, the painting was purchased by National Art Collections Fund for the National Gallery, London. Although it was attacked and badly damaged in 1914 by the suffragette Mary Richardson and she is shown without the mythological paraphernalia normally included in depictions of the scene, jewellery, roses, and myrtle are all absent. Unlike most earlier portrayals of the goddess, which show her with blond hair, the female figure can be identified as Venus because of the presence of her son, Cupid. Venus gazes into a mirror held by Cupid, who is without his usual bow, when the work was first inventoried, it was described as a nude woman, probably owing to its controversial nature. Venus looks outward at the viewer of the painting through her reflected image in the mirror, however, the image is blurred and reveals only a vague reflection of her facial characteristics, the reflected image of the head is much larger than it would be in reality. According to Wallace, There is nothing spiritual about face or picture, the classical setting is an excuse for a very material aesthetic sexuality—not sex, as such, but an appreciation of the beauty that accompanies attraction. Intertwining pink silk ribbons are draped over the mirror and curl over its frame, the folds of the bed sheets echo the goddesss physical form, and are rendered to emphasise the sweeping curves of her body. The Rokeby Venus is the only surviving nude by Velázquez, two were mentioned in the Royal collection, but may have been lost in the 1734 fire that destroyed the main Royal Palace of Madrid. A further one was recorded in the collection of Domingo Guerra Coronel and these records mention a reclining Venus, Venus and Adonis, and a Psyche and Cupid. Although the work is thought to have been painted from life. In contemporary Spain it was acceptable for artists to employ male nude models for studies, however and it has been claimed that the painting depicts a mistress Velázquez is known to have had while in Italy, who is supposed to have borne his child. Others have claimed that the model is the same as in Coronation of the Virgin and Las Hilanderas, the figures of both Venus and Cupid were significantly altered during the painting process, the result of the artists corrections to the contours as initially painted

The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, in Central London. Founded in 1824, it houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the century to 1900. The Gallery is a charity, and a non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the collection is free of charge. It is among the most visited art museums in the world, after the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum, unlike comparable museums in continental Europe, the National Gallery was not formed by nationalising an existing royal or princely art collection. It came into being when the British government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein, after that initial purchase the Gallery was shaped mainly by its early directors, notably Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, and by private donations, which comprise two-thirds of the collection. It used to be claimed that this was one of the few national galleries that had all its works on permanent exhibition, the present building, the third to house the National Gallery, was designed by William Wilkins from 1832 to 1838. Only the façade onto Trafalgar Square remains essentially unchanged from this time, wilkinss building was often criticised for the perceived weaknesses of its design and for its lack of space, the latter problem led to the establishment of the Tate Gallery for British art in 1897. The Sainsbury Wing, an extension to the west by Robert Venturi, the current Director of the National Gallery is Gabriele Finaldi. The late 18th century saw the nationalisation of royal or princely art collections across mainland Europe, great Britain, however, did not emulate the continental model, and the British Royal Collection remains in the sovereigns possession today. In 1777 the British government had the opportunity to buy an art collection of international stature, the MP John Wilkes argued for the government to buy this invaluable treasure and suggested that it be housed in a noble gallery. The twenty-five paintings from that now in the Gallery, including NG1, have arrived by a variety of routes. This offer was declined and Bourgeois bequeathed the collection to his old school, Dulwich College, the collection opened in Britains first purpose-built public gallery, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, in 1814. The British Institution, founded in 1805 by a group of aristocratic connoisseurs, the members lent works to exhibitions that changed annually, while an art school was held in the summer months. However, as the paintings that were lent were often mediocre, some resented the Institution. One of the Institutions founding members, Sir George Beaumont, Bt, in 1823 another major art collection came on the market, which had been assembled by the recently deceased John Julius Angerstein. Angerstein was a Russian-born émigré banker based in London, his collection numbered 38 paintings, including works by Raphael, on 1 July 1823 George Agar Ellis, a Whig politician, proposed to the House of Commons that it purchase the collection. The appeal was given added impetus by Beaumonts offer, which came with two conditions, that the government buy Angersteins collection, and that a building was to be found

Umberto Boccioni

Umberto Boccioni was an influential Italian painter and sculptor. He helped shape the revolutionary aesthetic of the Futurism movement as one of its principal figures, despite his short life, his approach to the dynamism of form and the deconstruction of solid mass guided artists long after his death. His works are held by many art museums, and in 1988 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York organized a major retrospective of 100 pieces. Umberto Boccioni was born on 19 October 1882 in Reggio Calabria and his father was a minor government employee, originally from the Romagna region in the north, and his job included frequent reassignments throughout Italy. The family soon relocated further north, and Umberto and his older sister Amelia grew up largely in Forlì, Genoa, at the age of 15, in 1897, Umberto and his father moved to Catania, Sicily, where he would finish school. Some time after 1898, he moved to Rome and studied art at the Scuola Libera del Nudo of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, boccionis writings at this time already express the combination of outrage and irony that would become a lifelong characteristic. His critical and rebellious nature, and overall ability, would contribute substantially to the development of the Futurism movement. Severini wrote It was a stroke of luck for us to meet such a man. Returning to Italy in 1907, he took drawing classes at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice. He had first visited the Famiglia Artistica, a society for artists in Milan, Boccioni moved to Milan in 1907. There, early in 1908, he met the Divisionist painter Gaetano Previati, in early 1910 he met Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who had already published his Manifesto del Futurismo in the previous year. Boccioni became the main theorist of the artistic movement, only when Boccioni, Severini and a few other Futurists traveled to Paris and saw what Braque and Picasso had been doing did the movement begin to take real shape. He also decided to be a sculptor after he visited various studios in Paris, in 1912, including those of Braque, Archipenko, Brâncuși, Raymond Duchamp-Villon and, probably, Medardo Rosso. In the brief span of the Italian Futurist movement, the short-lived Umberto Boccioni was a blazing comet. Boccioni was a theoretician of the movement, drafting two Futurist manifestoes in 1910 and 1912 that exalted the force and energy of contemporary life. They called for an art that glorified speed, violence and the machine age, one that above all reflected the dynamism of an engine-driven civilization. He exhibited in London, together with the group, in 1912 and 1914, others aligned themselves instead to its British equivalent, Vorticism, led by Wyndham Lewis. August Macke

August Macke was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him, August Robert Ludwig Macke was born in Germany on 3 January 1887, in Meschede, Westphalia. Shortly after Augusts birth the family settled at Cologne, where Macke was educated at the Kreuzgymnasium and became a friend of Hans Thuar, in 1904 Mackes father died, and in that year Macke enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, under Adolf Maennchen. Thereafter Macke lived most of his life in Bonn, with the exception of a few periods spent at Lake Thun in Switzerland and various trips to Paris, Italy. In Paris, where he traveled for the first time in 1907, Macke saw the work of the Impressionists and his style was formed within the mode of French Impressionism and Post-impressionism and later went through a Fauve period. In 1909 he married Elisabeth Gerhardt, in 1910, through his friendship with Franz Marc, Macke met Kandinsky and for a while shared the non-objective aesthetic and the mystical and symbolic interests of Der Blaue Reiter. Mackes meeting with Robert Delaunay in Paris in 1912 was to be a sort of revelation for him, Delaunays chromatic Cubism, which Apollinaire had called Orphism, influenced Mackes art from that point onwards. His Shops Windows can be considered an interpretation of Delaunays Windows. August Mackes oeuvre can be considered as Expressionism, and also as part of Fauvism, the paintings concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality, usually distorting colour and form. Mackes career was cut short by his death in the second month of the First World War at the front in Champagne, France. His final painting, Farewell, depicts the mood of gloom that settled after the outbreak of war and this was also the same year that he painted the famous painting, Türkisches Café in München. The August Macke Prize, was given the first time in 1959 by the districts Arnsberg, Brilon, Olpe and Meschede, the August-Macke-Haus is a museum dedicated to August Macke founded in 1991. It is located in Mackes former home in Bonn, where he lived from 1911 to 1914, at a 1997 Christies auction, Mackes The Couple at a Garden Table was sold for £2 million. Market in Tunis sold for £2.86 million in 2000, consigned by the estate of Ernst Beyeler, the artist’s In the Bazar was auctioned for £3.96 million – then four and a half times the high estimate – at Christies in 2011. Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Expressionism, Cubism and he and his colleague, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. First of all, the art of living, then as my ideal profession, poetry and philosophy, Paul Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, as the second child of German music teacher Hans Wilhelm Klee and Swiss singer Ida Marie Klee, née Frick. His sister Mathilde was born on 28 January 1876 in Walzenhausen and their father came from Tann and studied at the Stuttgart Conservatory singing, piano, organ and violin, meeting there his future wife Ida Frick. Hans Wilhelm Klee was active as a teacher at the Bern State Seminary in Hofwil near Bern until 1931. Klee was able to develop his skills as his parents encouraged and inspired him until his death. In 1880, his family moved to Bern, where they moved 17 years later after numerous changes of residence into a house at the Kirchenfeld district. From 1886 to 1890, Klee visited primary school and received, at the age of 7 and he was so talented on violin that, aged 11, he received an invitation to play as an extraordinary member of the Bern Music Association. He stated, I didnt find the idea of going in for music creatively particularly attractive in view of the decline in the history of musical achievement. As a musician, he played and felt emotionally bound to traditional works of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, at sixteen, Klee’s landscape drawings already show considerable skill. Around 1897, Klee started his diary, which he kept until 1918, during his school years, he avidly drew in his school books, in particular drawing caricatures, and already demonstrating skill with line and volume. He barely passed his exams at the Gymnasium of Bern. With his characteristic dry wit, he wrote, After all, it’s rather difficult to achieve the exact minimum, and it involves risks. On his own time, in addition to his interests in music and art, Klee was a great reader of literature. With his parents reluctant permission, in 1898 Klee began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Heinrich Knirr and he excelled at drawing but seemed to lack any natural color sense. He later recalled, During the third winter I even realized that I probably would never learn to paint, during these times of youthful adventure, Klee spent much time in pubs and had affairs with lower class women and artists models. He had a son in 1900 who died several weeks after birth

Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres. Its northernmost point, Cape Angela, is the northernmost point on the African continent and it is bordered by Algeria to the west and southwest, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. Tunisias population was estimated to be just under 11 million in 2014, Tunisias name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, which is located on Tunisias northeast coast. Geographically, Tunisia contains the end of the Atlas Mountains. Much of the rest of the land is fertile soil. Tunisia is a unitary semi-presidential representative democratic republic and it is considered to be the only full democracy in the Arab World. It has a human development index. In addition, Tunisia is also a state of the United Nations. Close relations with Europe – in particular with France and with Italy – have been forged through economic cooperation, privatisation, in ancient times, Tunisia was primarily inhabited by Berbers. Phoenician immigration began in the 12th century BC, these immigrants founded Carthage, a major mercantile power and a military rival of the Roman Republic, Carthage was defeated by the Romans in 146 BC. The Romans, who would occupy Tunisia for most of the eight hundred years, introduced Christianity. After several attempts starting in 647, the Arabs conquered the whole of Tunisia by 697, the Ottomans held sway for over three hundred years. The French colonization of Tunisia occurred in 1881, Tunisia gained independence with Habib Bourguiba and declared the Tunisian Republic in 1957. In 2011, the Tunisian Revolution resulted in the overthrow of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the country voted for parliament again on 26 October 2014, and for President on 23 November 2014. The word Tunisia is derived from Tunis, an urban hub. The present form of the name, with its Latinate suffix -ia, the French derivative Tunisie was adopted in some European languages with slight modifications, introducing a distinctive name to designate the country. Other languages remained untouched, such as the Russian Туни́с and Spanish Túnez, in this case, the same name is used for both country and city, as with the Arabic تونس, and only by context can one tell the difference. The name Tunis can be attributed to different origins and it is generally associated with the Berber root ⵜⵏⵙ, transcribed tns, which means to lay down or encampment

Dorothy Shakespear

Dorothy Shakespear was an English artist. She was the daughter of novelist Olivia Shakespear and the wife of American poet Ezra Pound, one of a small number of women vorticist painters, she had art work published in the short-lived but influential literary magazine BLAST. Dorothy and Pound first met in 1909 in London, and after a long courtship the two married in 1914 and they lived in Paris from 1920 until 1924, and in 1925 settled in Rapallo, Italy. In spite of her husbands 50-year affair with Olga Rudge, whom he met in Paris in the early 1920s, in 1926 she gave birth to a son Omar Pound, who was raised in England by her mother. By the 1930s she received a number of bequests, making her financially independent. Toward the end of World War II, Dorothy and Pound were evacuated from their home in Rapallo and they returned to Italy in 1958, in 1961 she moved to London, leaving her husband to live out the last decade of his life with Olga Rudge. Dorothys parents both came from British Indian Army families and her mother Olivia Shakespear, born on the Isle of Wight, lived her early years in Sussex and later in London where she and her sister Florence were raised to live a life of leisure. In 1885 she married Henry Hope Shakespear, who traced his family line to 17th-century East London rope makers and, like his wife, educated at Harrow, he went on to study law, become a barrister and in 1875 joined a law practice. The couples only child Dorothy was born nine months after the two were married, Dorothys mother, a minor novelist, was active in London literary circles for much of her life. From her father Dorothy learned to paint, with the two going to the countryside for regularly scheduled painting excursions. Dorothy met Pound at her own home on 16 February 1909 when her mother, although Olivia was more than 20 years older than Pound, she was a beautiful woman, and influential in London literary society, to whom Pound may have been attracted. But it was Dorothy, a younger than Pound, who was struck by his presence, writing in her diary on the very day she met him. Large grotesque eyes, with long, well-shaped fingers and beautiful nails, from her mother, she gained an interest in theosophy and mysticism. With her best friend and cousin, Georgie Hyde-Lees, she joined the Order of the Golden Dawn, most specifically Dorothy was interested in astrology and asked Pound for his exact moment of birth to prepare an astrology chart. In her notebook she wrote, You are very much so. At a very great turning point in life and you will marry twice & have two children. Dorothy spent the time painting, becoming enthralled with Lake Garda, as was Pound, Dorothy likely considered herself engaged to Pound after the Italian trip. Ezra Pound

Ezra Weston Loomis Pound was an expatriate American poet and critic, and a major figure in the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and his best-known works include Ripostes, Hugh Selwyn Mauberley and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos. This included arranging for the publication in 1915 of Eliots The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, angered by the carnage of World War I, Pound lost faith in England and blamed the war on usury and international capitalism. Deemed unfit to stand trial, he was incarcerated in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, while in custody in Italy, Pound had begun work on sections of The Cantos. These were published as The Pisan Cantos, for which he was awarded the Bollingen Prize in 1949 by the Library of Congress, triggering enormous controversy. Largely due to a campaign by his writers, he was released from St. Elizabeths in 1958. Hemingway wrote, The best of Pounds writing—and it is in the Cantos—will last as long as there is any literature, Pound was born in a small, two-story house in Hailey, Idaho Territory, the only child of Homer Loomis Pound and Isabel Weston. His father had worked in Hailey since 1883 as registrar of the General Land Office, both parents ancestors had emigrated from England in the 17th century. On his mothers side, Pound was descended from William Wadsworth, the Wadsworths married into the Westons of New York. Harding Weston and Mary Parker were the parents of Isabel Weston, harding apparently spent most of his life without work, with his brother, Ezra Weston, and his brothers wife, Frances, looking after Mary and Isabels needs. On his fathers side, the immigrant ancestor was John Pound, a Quaker, Ezras grandfather, Thaddeus Coleman Pound, was a Republican Congressman from northwest Wisconsin who had made and lost a fortune in the lumber business. Thaddeuss son Homer, Pounds father, worked for Thaddeus in the lumber business, Homer and Isabel married the following year, and Homer built a home in Hailey. Isabel was unhappy in Hailey and took Ezra with her to New York in 1887, Homer followed them, and in 1889 he found a job as an assayer at the Philadelphia Mint. The family moved to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and in 1893 bought a house in Wyncote. Between 1897 and 1900 Pound attended Cheltenham Military Academy, sometimes as a boarder, the boys wore Civil War-style uniforms and besides Latin were taught English, history, arithmetic, marksmanship, military drilling and the importance of submitting to authority. After the academy he may have attended Cheltenham Township High School for one year and it was at Pennsylvania in 1901 that Pound met Hilda Doolittle, his first serious romance, according to Pound scholar Ira Nadel. In 1911 she followed Pound to London and became involved in developing the Imagism movement, Pound was seeing two other women at the same time—Viola Baxter and Mary Moore—later dedicating a book of poetry, Personae, to the latter. He asked Moore to marry him too, but she turned him down and his parents and Frances Weston took Pound on another three-month European tour in 1902, after which he transferred, in 1903, to Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, possibly because of poor grades

St Mary Abbots

St Mary Abbots is a church located on Kensington High Street and the corner of Kensington Church Street in London W8. The present church structure was built in 1872 and designed by the celebrated architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, combining neo-Gothic and this edifice remains noted for having the tallest spire in London and is the latest in a series on the site since the beginning of the 12th century. The church is listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England, Sir Aubrey de Vere was a Norman knight who was rewarded with the manor of Kensington, among other estates, after the successful Norman Conquest. Around 1100, his eldest son, Godfrey, was seriously ill and cared for by Faritius. After a period of remission, Godfrey de Vere died in 1106 aged about 19, the de Vere familys gratitude to the abbey for their sons care was recognised by its bequest of land 270 acres. In 1262 the abbey founded a church and parish in Kensington, the epithet of Abbots is deemed to derive from its link with the ancient Abingdon Abbey rather than that subsequently with the diocese of the Bishop of London. However, this led to a dispute with the bishop and legal action followed in the consistory court. This resulted in the patronage of the passing to the bishop in perpetuity. The succession of vicars is recorded in a direct line back to this foundation in 1262, in 1370 the Norman church was rebuilt. This in turn proved too small as London urbanised in the 19th century, around 1860 the vicar, Archdeacon William Sinclair, launched a campaign for the building of a striking new church. The architect George Gilbert Scott was engaged and recommended the demolition of the church to take advantage of the site at the road junction. St Mary Abbots design is almost certainly influenced by Scotts earlier work on Dunblane Cathedral, its west fronts tall window and carved tympanum, the 278 ft high spire is clearly influenced by that of St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. The present church retains many fittings from the churches, especially funeral monuments from the mid-17th century onwards. The tower holds a ring of ten bells hung for change ringing, five of these bells, the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth of the current ring date from 1772 and were cast by Thomas Janaway. The other five, the treble, second, third, seventh, the church has an associated primary school in its churchyard, which was founded in 1707 as the Charity School. Previous buildings for the school designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in 1711. The school maintains close connections with the Church of England, in June 2015, the church launched a major fundraising appeal, looking to raise around £7. 2m, which is to be spent on restoring the church and improving it as a community hub
