Bo McMillin

Alvin Nugent McMillin was an American football player and coach at the collegiate and professional level. He played football at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, where he was a three-time All-American at quarterback, McMillin was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player as part of its inaugural 1951 class. He was the football coach at Centenary College of Louisiana, Geneva College, Kansas State University and Indiana University. In 1945, he led Indiana to its first Big Ten Conference title and was named AFCA Coach of the Year, after graduating from Centre, McMillin played professionally with the Milwaukee Badgers and Cleveland Indians—two early National Football League teams—in 1922 and 1923. He later returned to the NFL, coaching the Detroit Lions from 1948 to 1950, McMillins career NFL coaching mark was 14–24. McMillin was born on January 12,1895 to Reuben Thomas McMillin and Martha Buchanan Reilly in Prairie Hill, Limestone County, the family moved in 1897 to Waco and in 1901 to Fort Worth. McMillins father was a meat packer, as a child, Bo was known to pick fights, but was also known all his life as one who never drunk nor smoked nor swore. He spoke with a distinctive Texas drawl and he played football as a running back at North Side High School in Fort Worth and Somerset High School in Somerset, Kentucky. At North Side, he played with Red Weaver and was coached by Robert L. Myers, sully Montgomery, Matty Bell, Bill James and Bob Mathias also attended North Side. By the ninth grade, McMillin had reached his full growth at 5 feet 9 inches and 165 pounds, Myers obtained the coaching job at his alma mater, Centre College, and brought all the above-named players with him. McMillin and Weaver did not have sufficient high-school credits to enter college and enrolled at Somerset High School for the 1916-17 year, ive got a boy under my wing down here in Texas whos a football-playing fool and I want him to go to Centre. Id like for you to get him in a school up there. Wrote Myers to a man in Somerset, McMillin began his collegiate career at Centre College in Kentucky. McMillin was a student who supported himself by gambling and liked to play football. McMillin failed all his courses during his year, eventually receiving his A. B. degree from Centre in 1937 with credit for military service. According to McMillin, he initially left Centre with $3,500 in debt and he was a Hall-of-Fame, three-time All-American, triple-threat quarterback on the Centre Colonels football team under head coaches Chief Meyers and Charley Moran. McMillin was the quarterback on Centres all-time football team which was chosen in 1935 and he was nominated for the Associated Press All-Time Southeast 1869-1919-era team. In McMillins day of iron man football, he was also a safety man on defense and he began playing football at Centre in 1917, making an impact as a freshman when his 17-yard drop kick defeated the rival Kentucky Wildcats 3–0

In North America, a bowl game is one of a number of post-season college football games that are primarily played by teams belonging to the NCAAs Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Prior to 2002, bowl game statistics were not included in career totals. The term bowl originated from the Rose Bowl stadium, site of the first post-season college football games, the Rose Bowl Stadium, in turn, takes its name and bowl-shaped design from the Yale Bowl, the prototype of many football stadiums in the United States. The term has become almost synonymous with any major American football event. In professional football, the names of the National Football League s Super Bowl, the use of the term has crossed over into professional and collegiate Canadian football. A notable example is the annual Banjo Bowl between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, U Sports plays two semi-final bowl games before the Vanier Cup national championship game, the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. The matchups are determined on a rotation basis, with the Uteck Bowl being played at the easternmost host team. The history of the game began with the 1902 Tournament East-West football game. The Tournament of Roses eventually sponsored an annual contest starting with the 1916 Tournament East-West Football Game, with the 1923 Rose Bowl it began to be played at the newly completed Rose Bowl stadium, and thus the contest itself became known as the Rose Bowl game. The name bowl to describe the games comes from the Rose Bowl stadium. Other cities saw the value for tourism that the Tournament of Roses parade and Rose Bowl carried. The label bowl was attached to the name, even though the games were not always played in bowl-shaped stadiums. The historic timing of bowl games, around the new year, is the result of two factors—warm climate and ease of travel. The original bowls began in warm climates such as Southern California, Louisiana, Florida and Texas as a way to promote the area for tourism and business. Since commercial air travel was either non-existent or very limited, the games were scheduled well after the end of the season to allow fans to travel to the game site. As the number of games has increased, the number of games a team would need to win to be invited to a bowl game has decreased. With a 12-game schedule, a number of teams with only 5 wins have been invited to a bowl game, as of the completion of the 2016 season, the University of Alabama has played in more bowl games than any other school, with 64 appearances. Bill Ropers Princeton team was dubbed the team of destiny by Grantland Rice after defeating Chicago 21–18 in the first game nationally broadcast on radio, today, college football on radio is common for nearly every game in every division. On the same day, Cal defeated USC at the dedication of Rose Bowl Stadium, the Southern Conference would begin its first season of football in 1922. Vanderbilt tied with North Carolina and Georgia Tech for the conference championship, the Commodores tied Michigan 0–0 on October 14 at the dedication of Dudley Field, the Souths first permanent college football stadium. On the same day, Big Ten champion Iowa upset Yale, the 1923 Rose Bowl at seasons end was the first called the Rose Bowl and was held in the newly constructed stadium. In the first bowl appearance for either team, USC beat Penn State 14–3, the 1922 season included the new try for a point rule. Vanderbilt opened its season with a 38-0 win over Middle Tennessee Normal, Baylor beat North Texas 55-0 California beat Santa Clara 45-14. October 7 Princeton defeated Virginia 5-0, Harvard beat Holy Cross 20-0, Iowa beat Knox College 61-0, and Michigan defeated Case 48-0. October 14 Princeton beat Colgate 10-0, Harvard defeated Bowdoin 15-0, in the first game between Eastern and Western teams of the college football season, Iowa dominated Yale. Yale lost to a Western team for the first time ever, in Nashville, Michigan and Vanderbilt played to a 0-0 tie at the inaugural game for Dudley Field, the first dedicated football-only stadium in the South in the style of the Eastern schools. After beating Duke 20-0 in a Thursday game, North Carolina beat South Carolina, Centre gave VPI its only loss of the season. October 21 Harvard had been shocked the year before in a 6-0 upset by the Prayin Colonels of Centre College of Danville, in the rematch, the Crimson beat Centre 24-10. Princeton recorded another shutout, blanking Maryland 26-0, in Dallas, Vanderbilt and Texas, both unbeaten, met at the State Fair, with the Commodores winning 20-10. In Houston, Baylor defeated Rice 31-0, North Carolina won at NC State, 14-9. Iowa won at Illinois 8-7, and Michigan won at Ohio State 19-0, In St. Louis, Drake beat Washington University, 31-7 Baylor beat Arkansas 60-13 California shut out the Olympic Club team, 25-0. October 28 In the first football game ever broadcast nationally on the radio Princeton traveled to the University of Chicago for a rematch of Chicagos 1921 win, the game was witnessed by 32,000 fans, and listened to on New Yorks WEAF radio station. 1921 Vanderbilt Commodores football team

The 1921 Vanderbilt Commodores football team was an American football team representing Vanderbilt University during the 1921 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season. It was Dan McGugins 17th season as coach, and Wallace Wades first season as assistant coach. Vanderbilt outscored its opponents 161–21 for a record of 7–0–1 and a share of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship, the teams leading scorer was halfback Rupert Smith and its captain was Pink Wade, father of future Vanderbilt star Bill Wade. The Commodores played their games at Dudley Field. The season included the first of a series with the Texas Longhorns at the Texas State Fair. It also featured the first time the Kentucky Wildcats were able to score on the Commodores, Vanderbilt tied the Georgia Bulldogs on an onside kick to win a share of the conference title. Vanderbilt was the undefeated contender, and selector Clyde Berryman retroactively awarded the Commodores a national championship. 1921 was Wallace Wades first year as a assistant coach for the Commodores. Wade had played guard on a Brown Bruins football team represented the East in the 1916 Rose Bowl. Before coming to Vanderbilt Wade coached at the Fitzgerald & Clarke School in Tullahoma, Tennessee, also moving from Fitzgerald & Clarke were Lynn Bomar, Hek Wakefield, Pos Elam, and Red Williams. Other Commodore players debuting on the team included Putty Overall and Rupe Smith, returning veterans included Neely, Frank Godchaux, Doc Kuhn, Tot McCullough, Pink Wade, Alvin Bell, Alf Sharpe, and Percy Conyers. Godchaux was the first player to follow in his fathers footsteps as a Vanderbilt football player, captain Pink Wade, father of future Vanderbilt quarterback Bill Wade, moved from fullback to guard. Tackle Tex Bradford had played for Texas Christian University for two years, after sitting out a year at Vanderbilt, he was eligible to play for the Commodores. According to sportswriter Ferguson Fuzzy Woodruff, While prospects seem fair to middling in most of the big southern colleges, Dan McGugin expects nothing of Vanderbilt this year. Dan has lost Berryhill, his only reliable backfield man, through the matrimonial route, coach Dan McGugin was elected to the Tennessee state senate, beginning his term in 1921. Vanderbilt opened the season at Old Dudley Field against the Middle Tennessee State Normal School of Murfreesboro, Normal was coached by Alfred B. Commodore touchdowns were scored by Tot McCullough, Thomas Ryan, Rupert Smith, Percy Conyers, two extra points were scored by Smith, and one by Bell. Andrew Latham Andy Smith was an American football player and coach. He served as the football coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Purdue University. As head coach of the California Golden Bears football program, Smith guided his Wonder Teams to a record of 74–16–7, captured five Pacific Coast Conference titles, Smith was the winningest football coach in school history until he was surpassed by Jeff Tedford in 2011. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, andrew Latham Smith was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania on September 10,1883. As a freshman, he played for Penn State as a fullback and he shined at his position, both fearless and dominating on the field. In two years, he was convinced to transfer to Pennsylvania, then a superior program, There, in his senior season of 1904, he was named first-team All America for the national champion Quakers. After college, he entered the workforce with a degree in chemistry, however, he returned to Penn in 1905 as the coach of the freshmen team and in 1909, when he was 26, he became the head coach of Penn. During the next four years he led Penn with a record of 30 wins,10 losses and 3 ties, following this success he switched to Purdue where during the next four years he went 12–6–3. The University of California had fielded a football team since 1886. However, in 1906 it began playing rugby instead of football and this was because by that time football became considered as dangerous sport that could lead to serious injuries. California switched back to football in 1915, this was due to the fact that by that time rule changes made the game considerably safer. Due to his reputation, Smith was recruited to come out west, in 1916, his first year at Cal, Smith posted 6 wins,4 losses and 3 ties. In 1918, Cal won its first Pacific Coast Conference championship, also in 1918 Smith hired future Cal football and basketball head coach Clarence Nibs Price as his assistant. Price had a southern California connection and was able to recruit key players to the team including Harold Brick Muller, the 1919 freshmen team went 11-1 and became the core of next years varsity squad, to be known as the Wonder Team. The 1920 Golden Bears team won all 9 games, outscored their opponents,510 to 14, the NCAA has officially recognized them as the national champion of that season, the first from the Pacific Coast. The Wonder Team at California in 1920 changed the picture of Western football. Next year the 1921 Golden Bears also finished undefeated and were invited to play in the Rose Bowl. Eventually Smith agreed to the match, with California being the overwhelming favorite, the match went nothing like it was expected

Pacific Coast Conference

The Pacific Coast Conference was a college athletic conference in the United States which existed from 1915 to 1959. The name Pacific Coast Conference is now used by a San Diego area community college established in 1982. Established on December 2,1915, its four members were the University of California, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon. Among other complaints, he disdained the quality of education in the Oregon schools, pauley felt that University of California campuses deserved to play against colleges with comparably high academic standards. The PCC had a commissioner, an elaborate constitution, a formal code of conduct. Following the submission of his report, Atherton was promptly hired as commissioner in 1940, the conference was wracked by scandal in 1951. Charges were made and confirmed that University of Oregon football coach Jim Aiken had violated the code for financial aid. After Aiken was compelled to resign, Oregon urged the PCC to look at similar abuses by UCLA football coach Red Sanders, the conference spent five years attempting to reform itself. In 1956, the scandal became public, the scandal first broke in Washington, when in January 1956, several discontented players staged a mutiny against their coach, John Cherberg. After the coach was fired, the PCC followed up on charges of a slush fund, the PCC found evidence of the prohibited activities of the Greater Washington Advertising Fund run by Roscoe C. Torchy Torrance, and in May imposed sanctions, in March, allegations of prohibited payments made by two booster clubs associated with UCLA, the Bruin Bench and the Young Mens Club of Westwood, were published in Los Angeles newspapers. UCLA refused for ten weeks to allow PCC officials to proceed in their investigation and this same alumnus also blew the whistle on Cals phony work program for athletes known as the San Francisco Gridiron Club, with an extension in the Los Angeles area known as the South Seas Fund. The first major reaction came from the University of California system, for Sproul the PCC dispute was not just about athletics, at stake was the ideal of a unified University of California that enjoyed statewide support. This ideal collided with aspirations of UCLA alumni who believed that Sprouls vision would always favor the Berkeley campus at the expense of the younger UCLA campus. Oregon State College president August Leroy Strand wrote, The reasons for California and UCLA dropping out are as different as night, the significance of the whole affair was the union of Berkeley and UCLA. Admissions and scholarship had nothing to do with the withdrawals, the PCC was falling apart, leading to the decision to dissolve after the 1958-59 season. Soon after the PCC was dissolved, five of its nine members created the Athletic Association of Western Universities for the 1959 season, after initially being blocked from admission, three of the four remaining schools would eventually join, but members were not required to play other members. Tensions were high between UCLA and Stanford, as Stanford had voted for UCLAs expulsion from the PCC, Idaho was not involved in the scandals but had become noncompetitive in the PCC

Gilmour Gloomy Gil Dobie was an American football player and coach. Dobies Cornell teams of 1921,1922 and 1923 have been recognized as national champions, Dobie was also the head basketball coach at North Dakota Agricultural for two seasons from 1906 to 1908, tallying a mark of 17–5. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951, Dobie reached 100 career wins in 108 games, which stood as the NCAA record for the fewest games needed to reach 100 wins from 1921 to 2014. Dobie was born in Hastings, Minnesota and he played football as an end and quarterback at the University of Minnesota. Dobie achieved his greatest success at the University of Washington, where he had a remarkable 58–0–3 record, during his tenure, Washington had a 40-game winning streak, which is the second longest in NCAA Division I-A/FBS history. His coaching career at Washington also comprised all of Washingtons 64-game unbeaten streak — still a college football record. Dobie then became the 16th head coach for the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen and his coaching record at the Navy was 18–3. This ranks him 14th at the Navy in total wins and first at Navy in winning percentage, after coaching at Navy, Dobie won three national championships with Cornell, in 1921,1922, and 1923 with Eddie Kaw and George Pfann. After his first season, he signed a five-year contract, Dobie remains the fastest coach to 100 wins in major-college history. His career coaching record was 182 wins,45 losses, and 15 ties, of the 33 years he coached, he had 14 undefeated seasons. At Boston College at least, the best play of the Dobie system was a smash through tackle, Dobie was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as a charter member. George Pfann

George R. Pfann was an American football player and coach. He played college football at Cornell University, where he never lost while starring as a quarterback, before graduating from Cornell in 1924, Pfann also played on the lacrosse and basketball teams, and was elected to the Sphinx Head Society. He then studied law at Cornell while serving as an assistant football coach, Pfann completed his law degree at Brasenose College, Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. From 1931 to 1935, Pfann was the football coach at Swarthmore College. Eddie Kaw

Edgar Lawrence Kaw was an American football player. He attended Cornell University, where he was a prominent halfback on coach Gil Dobies Cornell Big Red football team and he was a shifty open-field runner known as one of the sports greatest. His stride had one foot farther than the other, Kaw scored 90 points in 1921. That year, Cornell beat Penn 41–0 in the mud and Kaw scored five touchdowns, Kaw skipped over the ooze and water as if he were running on a cinder track, sidestepping a small lake and a Penn tackler with one and the same motion. He was elected into the Sphinx Head Society during his senior year, Kaw played 11 games for the Buffalo Bisons in 1924. In 1956, Kaw, then a resident of Oakland, California, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and he was flown to New York and inducted into the Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony at the Cornell–Harvard game in October 1956. Jock Sutherland

John Bain Jock Sutherland was an American football player and coach. He coached college football at Lafayette College and the University of Pittsburgh and professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951. A native of Coupar Angus in Scotland, Sutherland got his start in football by playing end at the University of Pittsburgh, commonly known as Pitt, Sutherland was named an All-American and played on Pitts national championship teams in 1915 and 1916. Sutherland also played on Pitts undefeated 1917 team, the 1917 team was known as The Fighting Dentists because on occasion every position was filled by dental students. The dental students on the 1917 team included Sutherland, Katy Easterday, Skip Gougler, Tank McLaren, Sutherland also lettered in wrestling and captained the track & field team at Pitt for which he specialized in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, Psi Omega national dental fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Druids Society, Sutherland graduated from the University of Pittsburghs School of Dentistry, where he also held a professorship in the instruction of bridge and crown. In 1919, Sutherland played in a few games with the Massillon Tigers of the Ohio League, however he soon left the team and began his head coaching career at Lafayette College from 1919 to 1923, leading the Leopards to the 1921 Eastern Collegiate Championship. In 1924, Sutherland replaced Pop Warner, his coach and mentor. Sutherland, who was described as a hero in a Saturday Evening Post article, became a highly admired. On offense, he ran a double-wing formation known as the Sutherland Scythe and he was known for his calm and direct demeanor, never shouting or ranting to motivate his team. During his tenure, Sutherlands teams were named Eastern football champions seven times including 1925,1927,1929,1931,1934,1936, during this time, Pitt appeared in four Rose Bowl games and turned down a bid for the 1938 Rose Bowl. Sutherlands teams were named National Champions by various selectors for nine different seasons including 1925,1927,1929,1931,1933,1934,1936,1937, bowmans moves, which resulted in Sutherlands departure, were controversial among students and supporters of the football program. His.812 winning percentage is also the 5th best such mark during the first 20 years of any coaches career and he is also tied for the 23rd fewest games to reach 100 victories, accomplished in his 132nd game as coach. Sutherland later coached in the National Football League with the Brooklyn Dodgers for two seasons, 1940–41, before leaving the team to serve the United States during World War II, during the war, Sutherland served in the United States Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant commander. Upon returning to the United States, Sutherland landed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and he led the Steelers to their first playoff appearance in 1947. He was flown back to Pittsburgh for further treatment, an exploratory surgery was required to determine whether he was suffering from a hemorrhage or a tumor. Sutherland died in Pittsburgh on April 11,1948, following surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor and he is interred in Pittsburghs Homewood Cemetery. Sutherland was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as a coach and he is memorialized on the Pitt campus with a street, Sutherland Drive, and the student residence Sutherland Hall

The Big Ten Conference, formerly Western Conference and Big Nine Conference, is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. The conference includes the public university in each of 11 states stretching from New Jersey to Nebraska. The Big Ten Conference was established in 1895 when Purdue University president James H, in 1905, the conference was officially incorporated as the Intercollegiate Conference Athletic Association. Big Ten member institutions are predominantly major flagship research universities with large financial endowments, large student enrollment is also a hallmark of Big Ten universities, as 12 of the 14 members feature enrollments of 30,000 or more students. Northwestern University, one of just two members with a total enrollment of fewer than 30,000 students, is the lone private university among Big Ten membership. Collectively, Big Ten universities educate more than 520,000 total students and have 5.7 million living alumni, Big Ten universities engage in $9.3 billion in funded research each year. Big Ten universities are members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. Grantland Rice

Henry Grantland Rice was an early 20th-century American sportswriter known for his elegant prose. His writing was published in newspapers around the country and broadcast on the radio, Grantland Rice was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Bolling Hendon Rice, a cotton dealer, and his wife, Mary Beulah Rice. His grandfather Major H. W. Rice was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, on the football team, he lettered in the year of 1899 as an end and averaged two injuries a year. On the baseball team, he was captain in 1901, Vanderbilt coach Dan McGugin in Spaldings Football Guides summation of the season in the SIAA wrote, The standing. First, Vanderbilt, second, Sewanee, a mighty good second, Rice coached the 1908 Vanderbilt baseball team. After taking early jobs with the Atlanta Journal and the Cleveland News, the job at the Tennessean was given to him by former Sewanee Tigers coach Billy Suter, who coached baseball teams against which Rice played while at Vanderbilt. Afterwards he obtained a series of jobs with major newspapers in the Northeastern United States. In 1914 he began his Sportlight column in the New York Tribune and he also provided monthly Grantland Rice Sportlights as part of Paramount newsreels from 1925–1954. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and their real names are, Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. The passage added great import to the event described and elevated it to a level far beyond that of a football game. He became even better known after his columns were nationally syndicated beginning in 1930 and he and his writing are among the reasons that the 1920s in the United States are sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Sports. Forward pass

In several forms of football a forward pass is a throwing of the ball in the direction that the offensive team is trying to move, towards the defensive teams goal line. In some football codes, such as football, the kicked forward pass is used so ubiquitously that it is not thought of as a distinct kind of play at all. In these sports, the concept of offside is used to regulate who can be in front of the play or be nearest to the goal, however, this has not always been the case. Some earlier incarnations of football allowed unlimited forward passing, while others had strict offside rules similar to rugby, the development of the forward pass in American football shows how the game has evolved from its rugby roots into the distinctive game it is today. Illegal and experimental forward passes had been attempted as early as 1876, another change in rules occurred on January 18,1951, which established that no center, tackle, or guard could receive a forward pass. Today, the only linemen who can receive a forward pass are the ends, current rules regulate who may throw and who may receive a forward pass, and under what circumstances, as well as how the defensive team may try to prevent a pass from being completed. In American and Canadian football, a pass, usually referred to simply as a pass. This is permitted only once during a scrimmage down by the team before team possession has changed, provided the pass is thrown from in or behind the neutral zone. An illegal forward pass can incur a penalty and the loss of a down, although it may be legally intercepted by the opponents. If an eligible receiver on the passing team legally catches the ball, the pass is completed, if an opposing player legally catches the ball it is an interception. That players team immediately gains possession of the ball and he may attempt to advance the ball toward his opponents goal, if no player is able to legally catch the ball it is an incomplete pass and the ball becomes dead the moment it touches the ground. It will then be returned to the line of scrimmage for the next down. If any player interferes with an eligible receivers ability to catch the ball it is pass interference which draws a penalty of varying degree. The person passing the ball must be a member of the team. The moment that a forward pass begins is important to the game, the pass begins the moment the passers arm begins to move forward. If the passer drops the ball before this moment it is a fumble, in this case anybody can gain possession of the ball before or after it touches the ground. If the passer drops the ball while his arm is moving forward it is a pass, regardless of where the ball lands or is first touched. The quarterback generally either starts a few paces behind the line of scrimmage or drops back a few paces after the ball is snapped

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association was one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the United States. Twenty-seven of the current Division I FBS football programs were members of this conference at some point, the SIAA was founded on December 21,1894, by Dr. William Dudley, a chemistry professor at Vanderbilt, at the Kimball House in Atlanta. Dudley was a member of the Vanderbilt Athletic Association, formed in 1886 with Dr. W. M. Baskerville as president, most students at Vanderbilt were members. The early sports played on the Vanderbilt campus were baseball, bicycling, Dudley was primarily responsible for the formation of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Sewanees opposition stopped it from occurring, the original members were Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Sewanee, Vanderbilt, and Virginia. Virginia and North Carolina soon dropped before the inaugural 1895 season, the conference was originally formed for the development and purification of college athletics throughout the South. In 1903, a single-game football playoff occurred, but it seems to have been coordinated more so by the two competing schools than the conference itself, several other efforts over the years by individual schools to hold a conference title game fell through. Most SIAA titles claimed by schools in sports were actually more mythical in nature than officially sanctioned by the league. In 1915, a disagreement arose within the conference regarding the eligibility of freshman athletes, generally, the larger universities opposed the eligibility of freshman players, while the smaller schools favored it. As a result, some of the universities formed the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the conferences annual meeting on December 10,1920, the SIAA rejected proposals to ban freshman athletes, in protest, some schools that had voted in favor of the propositions immediately announced they would seek to form a new conference. In 1922, the Southern Conference underwent an expansion and added six more members, all at the expense of the SIAA, Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane, and Vanderbilt. With the departure of most of the colleges, the SIAA became a de facto small college conference in 1923. In the 1920s and 1930s, the SIAA increased its membership with the addition of additional small universities. The conference eventually disbanded in 1942 with the onset of American involvement in World War II, original charter members are denoted in boldface. Invited charter members are denoted with an asterisk, in the era in which the SIAA operated, teams tended to join in December, therefore, the first year of conference play in a given sport was often the following calendar year. The 1921 Georgia Bulldogs football team represented the Georgia Bulldogs of the University of Georgia during the 1921 college football season. This was the second season under the guidance of head coach Herman Stegeman. The Bulldogs had a 7–2–1 record, and were also co-champion of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, co-champions Centre, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt tied Georgia with an onside kick in their game which decided conference title. The Bulldogs only two came against two of the football powerhouses of the day, Eastern schools Harvard and Dartmouth. All season, not a team scored through its line, which was the greatest in the South. Guard Hugh Whelchel was selected a third-team All-American by Walter Camp, on the line with Whelchel were captain and end Owen Reynolds, tackles Artie Pew and Joe Bennett, and center Bum Day. According to Patrick Garbin, Prior to the 1960s, Bennett is likely Georgias most outstanding tackle, the season opened with a 28–0 defeat of Josh Codys Mercer Baptists. The starting lineup was O. Reynolds, Bennett, Whelchel, Day, Anthony, Pew, Murray, Pierce, Reynolds, Spicer, Jim Tom Reynolds provided the feature play when he returned an interception 40 yards to set up a touchdown. The starting lineup was Reynolds, Bennett, Whelchel, Day, Anthony, Pew, Murray, Randall, the Bulldogs traveled north and were defeated by the eastern power Harvard Crimson 10–7. They were the first team all season to score on the Crimson, Harvard won by a blocked punt recovery and a drop kicked field goal. A triple pass from Collings to Jim Reynolds to Dick Hartley in the final period got Georgias touchdown, the starting lineup was O. Reynolds, Bennett, Whelchel, Day, Anthony, Pew, Murray, Randall, Fletcher, Hartley, and Spicer. Georgia easily defeated the in-state Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 14–0, the starting lineup was Bennett, Colley, Whelchel, Boney, Vandiver, Williams, Richardson, Pearce, Clark, Thompson, Tanner. Georgia beat the heavily favored Auburn team 7–0 when Teany Randall scored in the final period, the starting lineup was Reynolds, Bennett, Whelchel, Day, Anthony, Pew, P. Bennett, Randall, Hartley, Spicer, Fletcher. The Bulldogs shutout the Virginia Cavaliers 21–0, UVA presented Georgia with a memorial tablet to Richard Von Albade Gammon. The starting lineup was Reynolds, Bennett, Whelchel, Day, Anthony, Pew, Murray, Collings, Hartley, J. Reynolds, in the seventh week of play, the Bulldogs faced the Vanderbilt Commodores at Curry Field. Vanderbilts record against Georgia was 6–1, Georgias only win was 4–0, in 1898, the Bulldogs were favored to win their first meeting since 1912. In the first quarter, both teams were evenly matched, the Commodores had their best chance to score when Thomas Ryan beat the defense, but he dropped Jess Neelys pass. The 1921 Centre Praying Colonels football team represented Centre College of Danville, Kentucky in the 1921 college football season. Led by coach Charley Moran, the Praying Colonels compiled a 10–1 record, the Colonels victory in its game versus Harvard is regarded as one of the greatest upsets in college football history. Centre also played in two bowl games after the season. The Colonels defeated Arizona 38–0 in the San Diego East-West Christmas Classic before losing to Texas A&M in an upset at the Dixie Classic, the Colonels captain was Army Armstrong. McMillin was an inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. Centre College was a college in Danville, Kentucky. From 1917 to 1924, Centre compiled a 57–8 record while playing against some of the best teams in the nation, the 1919 team first brought the Praying Colonels to national attention. In 1921, the student body numbered just 274. The Colonels had closed the 1920 season by convincingly routing Texas Christian in the Fort Worth Classic and this season they started their schedule with much stronger competition than the previous year. Several publications relay, In 1920, the slogan of Centre College was Score. In 1921 Centre changed the Score slogan to Hold Em, coach Charley Moran used a single wing system like his former mentor Pop Warner. Tiny Thornill, a former Pitt star under Warner, and future Stanford head coach, in 1921, football used a one-platoon system, with players featuring on both offense, defense, and special teams. Center Red Weaver, who had posted record numbers for placekicking extra points, Centre opened the season with a 14–0 victory over the Clemson Tigers. A 7-yard run behind left tackle from Tom Bartlett got the first touchdown, McMillin skirted right end for the games other score. The starting lineup was, Bradley, Roberts, Jones, Kubale, Cregor, James, Gordy, McMillin, Bartlett, Armstrong, the next week was a 14–0 victory over VPI. Centre scored both touchdowns in the final quarter and they were scored in rapid succession by Tanner and Armstrong. The starting lineup was, Bradley, Roberts, Jones, Kubale, Cregor, James, Gordy, McMillin, Bartlett, Armstrong, next was a 28–6 victory over Saint Xavier of Cincinnati. The team played its home games at Grant Field. Its only loss was in its road game, at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Tornado was coached by William Alexander in his year as head coach, compiling an 8–1 record. The team shared the SIAA title with the Centre Colonels, Georgia Bulldogs, captain Judy Harlan made Walter Camps third-team All-America. Red Barron led the team in scoring and rushed for 1,459 yards during the season, in 1921, football used a one-platoon system in which players played offense, defense, and special teams. A team which scored a touchdown had the option to kick off or receive, coach William Alexander retained his predecessor John Heismans scheme, using the pre-snap movement of his jump shift offense. The Tornado captain was senior fullback Judy Harlan, called the schools greatest back by some, also in the backfield was halfback Red Barron, who had just recovered from a broken jaw received the previous season in a game against Vanderbilt. Gone from the team were greats such as Buck Flowers and Bill Fincher, future Tech fullback Sam Murray said about a strong runner during the 1930s, Hes good. But if I were playing again, I would have one wish – never to see bearing down upon me a more fearsome picture of power than Judy Harlan blocking for Red Barron, in the line at either end were the brothers John and Al Staton. At guard was Oscar Davis, who was listed on an All-Tech Alexander-era team, the season opened with a 42–0 shutout of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The intense heat made for many substitutions, and a number of Tech players starred, despite the heat, Harlan still smashed into the line. The starting lineup was J. Staton, McRee, McIntyre, Amis, Davis, Lyman, A. Staton, Hunt, Brewster, Barron, in the second week of play, Red Barron starred as the Tornado defeated the neighboring Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 41–0. Dewey Scarboro scored Techs first touchdown, and the second came on a 25-yard run by Barron, in the third quarter, Tech sent in a substitute backfield which was even more successful. The Tornado had 363 yards from scrimmage to Oglethorpes four, the starting lineup was Nabelle, Johnson, Lebey, Frye, Davis, Fincher, A. Staton, McDonough, Scarboro, Barron, and Harlan. Tech shut out Davidson 70–0, with 22 first downs, Davidson had none, for the first touchdown, Barron threw a pass and Staton ran 35 yards for the score. The final score came when Barron had a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown, the starting lineup was J. Staton, McRee, Frye, Amis, Borum, Lyman, A. Staton, McDonough, Ferst, Barron, and Harlan. The Tech backfield, led by Barron, defeated Billy Lavals Furman Purple Hurricane 69–0, Barron had a 55-yard touchdown run. 1922 Rose Bowl

The 1922 Rose Bowl was a college football bowl game played on January 2,1922, between the Washington & Jefferson Presidents and the California Golden Bears. The Cal team was favored in this game, causing one sportswriter to say All I know about Washington and Jefferson is that theyre both dead. The 1921 team, coached by Greasy Neale, went 10–0 in the season, defeating powerhouses Pitt, University of Detroit. The 7–0 victory over rival Pitt was celebrated with a day of canceled classes, as the best team from the east, W&J was invited to the 1922 Rose Bowl to play the best team from the west, the undefeated and heavily favored California Golden Bears. The Red and Black could only afford to send 11 men on the cross-country trip, thus, W&J would be the last Rose Bowl team to play the same 11 men the entire game. During the train ride to Pasadena, in which Greasy Neale continued to prepare his men, one player caught pneumonia, luckily, another player had secretly stowed away on the train and was given the ill players ticket and roster spot. In one of the most disputed plays in Rose Bowl history, the game was notable as the last time a small school would be represented in the Rose Bowl. W&Js Russ Stein was named Most Valuable Player and he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1991. The Red and Black finished the season with a share of the national championship. The only scoreless tie in Rose Bowl history, and one of the four ties in major bowl games. The Washington & Jefferson Presidents football team represents Washington & Jefferson College in collegiate level football. The team competes in NCAA Division III and is affiliated with the Presidents Athletic Conference, since its founding in 1890, the team has played their home games at College Field, which was remodeled and renamed Cameron Stadium in 2001. A number of players were named to the College Football All-America Team, the team has been coached by some of the best-known coaches in football history, including John Heisman, Greasy Neale, and Andy Kerr. Founded in 1890, the quickly became well known for drawing large crowds. The faculty and administration expressed concern over the strength of the team, during the 1910s, some sportswriters suggested that the Presidents were one of the top teams in the nation. The greatest achievement in the history was in 1921, when the Presidents appeared in the 1922 Rose Bowl. As college football evolved in the 1930s and 1940s, the Presidents fell far behind their larger competitors, controversy over the poor play of the football team, and a lack of play against larger teams, contributed to the resignation of a college president. In the 1950s the team joined NCAA Division III and the Presidents Athletic Conference, by the 1980s, the team had learned to thrive in that environment, winning a number of conference championships and regularly qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs. The football team played its first game on November 1,1890, the Red and Blacks third game of the inaugural season, against College of Wooster, remains disputed to this day, with both schools claiming a victory. By 1894, the communitys interest in the sport had grown considerably, with stronger opponents. A special train from Washington to Pittsburgh was chartered to carry fans, John Brallier, who was the first openly professional football player, played football for Washington & Jefferson College in 1895 before returning to the Greensburg Athletic Association. This incident, and others, caused the faculty to adopt the colleges first eligibility requirements for student athletes, at the same time its activities was becoming more scrutinized, the football team became more successful. But was the September 29,1897, game against the University of Pennsylvania Quakers that marked the birth of football at W&J. The Red and Black lost 18-4 to the national champions. In a game against Denison University on Sept.19,1908, in 1910, the football program was in danger of being dissolved due to crushing debt. The Student Athletic Committee proposed a $1 per term student fee to fund the team, however, team manager and beloved student solicitor Robert M. Murphy, was able to convince the students to accept the fee. However, the Faculty Athletic Committee balked, vetoing the new rules, wells highlighted the growing tension between athletics and academics. As orchestrated by a group of football supporters, the two professors were brought before a faculty committee for not having the requisite support for the athletic programs

Tournament Park is a park and athletics venue in Pasadena, California, currently maintained by the California Institute of Technology. It was simply known as the lot before renamed Tournament Park in 1900. It is best known for being the site of the first Rose Bowl Game in 1902, and its capacity at the time was 43,000 people, many of which were in temporary wooden bleachers that the city deemed unsafe, thus necessitating the construction of the Rose Bowl. Besides hosting Tournament of Roses events, the venue hosted the Southern California Horse Show Associations annual horse show in the early 20th century. Tournament Park, along with the Rose Bowl, served as the venue for Caltechs football team until the school dropped football, the stadium, now known as South Athletic Field, is bounded by the Fox-Stanton Track, and continues to serve as Caltechs track and field venue. The Midwest Conference is a college athletic conference affiliated with the NCAAs Division III. Member institutions are located in the Midwestern United States in the states of Illinois, Iowa, the organization of the Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference was conceived at a meeting at Coe College on May 12,1921. Charter members were Beloit College, Carleton College, Coe College, Cornell College, Knox College, ripon College joined the conference in 1923, followed by Monmouth College in 1924, Grinnell College in 1940 and Lake Forest College in 1974. Illinois College and St. Norbert College joined in 1982 and Carroll University followed in 1992, Carleton withdrew following the 1982–83 academic year. St. Olaf College also competed in the conference from 1952 to 74, Coe and Cornell withdrew following the 1996–97 academic year with Cornell rejoining the league starting in the 2012–13 year. Macalester College joined as a member starting in 2014. The University of Chicago will rejoin as a member in 2017. The Southwestern Athletic Conference is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black universities in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAAs Division I for all sports, in football, it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision, still frequently referred to by its former designation of Division I-AA. The SWAC is widely considered the premier HBCU conference and ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni affiliated with sports teams. In 1994, the SWAC fell just 40,000 fans short of becoming the first non-Football Bowl Subdivision conference to attract one million fans to its home games, in 1920, athletic officials from six Texas HBCUs — C. H. Fuller of Bishop College, Red Randolph and C. H, patterson of Paul Quinn College, E. G. Evans, H. J. Evans and H. J. Starns of Prairie View A&M, D. C. Fuller of Texas College and G. Whitte Jordan of Wiley College — met in Houston, Texas, to discuss common interests. At this meeting, they agreed to form a new league, Paul Quinn became the first of the original members to withdraw from the league in 1929. When Langston University of Oklahoma was admitted into the two years later, it began the migration of state-supported institutions into the SWAC. Southern University entered the ranks in 1934, followed by Arkansas AM&N in 1936, the enter-exit cycle continued in 1961 when Texas College withdrew, followed by the admittance of Alcorn A&M in 1962. Wiley left in 1968, the same year Mississippi Valley State College entered, Arkansas AM&N exited in 1970 and Alabama State University entered in 1982. Arkansas–Pine Bluff rejoined the SWAC on July 1,1997, regaining full-member status one year later, Alabama A&M University became the conference’s tenth member when it became a full member in September,1999 after a one-year period as an affiliate SWAC member. Most of the former SWAC members that have left the conference are currently a part of the Red River Athletic Conference of the NAIA, the SWAC is one of two conferences – the other being the Ivy League – that does not participate in the FCS football playoffs. The SWAC instead splits its schools into two divisions, and plays a conference championship game, the SWAC has occasionally been a participant in bowl games, the most recent being the Celebration Bowl, which features the SWAC as one of its tie-ins. Current championship competition offered by the SWAC includes competition for men in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track & field and tennis. Women’s competition is offered in the sports of basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. California State University, Fresno is a public research university and one of 23 campuses within the California State University system. The city of Fresno is the fifth largest city in California, the university is within an hours drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three-hour drive of both Los Angeles and San Francisco. The university has a Fall 2016 enrollment of 24,405 students and it offers bachelors degrees in 60 areas of study,45 masters degrees,3 doctoral degrees,12 certificates of advanced study, and 2 different teaching credentials. The universitys unique facilities include a planetarium, on-campus raisin and wine grape vineyards, and a commercial winery. Fresno State was founded as the Fresno State Normal School in 1911 with Charles Lourie McLane as its first president, the original campus was what is now Fresno City College. In 1956, Fresno State moved its campus to its present location in the northeast part of the city and it became Fresno State College in 1949, when it was authorized to grant bachelors degrees. It became an institution of the California State University System in 1961. In 1972 the name was changed to California State University. The greater campus extends from Bulldog Stadium on the west boundary to the Save Mart Center and, Maya Theater, Campus Pointe, vineyards and orchards designate the northern boundary of the campus, while Shaw Avenue designates the southern edge. The 388 acres main campus features more than 46 traditional and modern buildings and it is considered one of the most modern and best equipped agricultural facilities in the West. Fresno State was officially designated as an arboretum in 1979 and now has more than 4,000 trees on campus, Fresno State operates the first university-based commercial winery in the United States. The Henry Madden Library is a resource for recorded knowledge and information supporting the teaching, research. Because of its size and depth, it is an important community and regional resource, the library recently underwent a $105 million renovation that was completed February 2009. The green V on the Bulldogs helmets, uniforms, field symbolize California Central Valley, specifically the San Joaquin Valley, the current head coach, beginning in the 2017 season, is Jeff Tedford. Football was first played on the Fresno campus in 1921, Fresno State football experienced a stretch of seasons hovering around the.500 mark during the later 1960s and 70s. Yet despite also having a number of winning seasons, including two where the Bulldogs went undefeated, they participated in two university division bowl games before the 1980s. In 1976, Jim Sweeney took over a Bulldog squad that had had 8 winning seasons since its last bowl bid, and promptly took the 1977 squad to a 9-2 record in his second year as head coach. The Sweeney era bristled with confidence as the Bulldogs became, along with rival San Jose State, sweeneys 1985 squad is particularly memorable for Bulldog fans, as the team finished as the only unbeaten Division I-A team in the country, ranked 16th in the coaches poll. The 1985 squad did not, however, finish untied, after a 24-24 tie at home against the Rainbow clad Warriors of Hawaii, the face of Fresno State football changed with the construction of a university football stadium for the team for the 1980 season. Before then, the Bulldogs played their games in Fresno City Colleges Ratcliffe Stadium. The construction of a new stadium which held over 30,000 in attendance was an outstanding improvement for the Bulldogs. During the Sweeney era, the Bulldogs posted nine consecutive winning seasons,1994, however, marked the beginning of three consecutive losing seasons which ended the Sweeney era and brought in Pat Hill, who had worked both in the NFL and colleges for the past several decades. Fresno State began a renaissance under Hill, who continued the advances the program had made during the Sweeney era, noted for playing particularly difficult non-conference schedules, Hills teams routinely played elite, highly ranked teams. The Bulldogs have also been the only school to record three consecutive bowl victories over schools from BCS conferences. In 2001, the Bulldogs, under Hill and quarterback David Carr, the Bulldogs opened the season in Boulder against the Colorado Buffaloes, leaving with a 24-22 win over the eventual Big 12 champions. The next game of the 2001 season was at home against the Oregon State Beavers, in an electric game at Bulldog Stadium, the Bulldogs outplayed the Beavers in a 44-24 rout. Fresno State then headed to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers, winners of the Sun Bowl over UCLA the previous year, the Bulldogs also topped the Badgers by a score of 32-20. This changed abruptly, however, when the Boise State Broncos and Hawaii Rainbows upset the Bulldogs in Fresno, the defeats led the team instead the Silicon Valley Classic against Michigan State, a game which was taken by the Spartans by a score of 44-35. Nonetheless, the performances of the regular season earned Fresno State its first number one overall NFL draft choice in David Carr. The 2002 squad, which had difficulty opening the season with a 1-3 record, finished strong to finish the regular season 8-5 and this resulted in a win for the Bulldogs, who beat the Yellow Jackets 30-21

The Nebraska Cornhuskers football team represents the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Among the 128 Division I-A teams, Nebraska is one of ten programs to win 800 or more games. Nebraska has more victories against Power Five opponents than any program, as well as the third most victories all-time, behind only Michigan. Nebraska also has the most wins and the highest winning percentage of any program over the last 50 years, ESPN ranks two undefeated Nebraska squads, the 1971 team and the 1995 team, among the top three teams in college football history. Nebraska claims 46 conference championships and five championships,1970,1971,1994,1995. The titles in the 1990s marked the first time that a team won three championships in four seasons since the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in 1946–1949. Also, the 2011–2012 Alabama Crimson Tide, the 1994–1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers, Nebraska also has had five undefeated seasons in which they were not the national champions,1902,1903,1913,1914, and 1915. Between 1912 and 1916, a 34-game unbeaten streak was recorded by head coach Ewald O. Stiehm, famous Cornhuskers include Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch. Rodgers was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and for the new millennium he was voted the teams Player of the Century, Rozier was likewise inducted into the hall in 2006. Bible, Bob Devaney, Biff Jones, Tom Osborne, Eddie Robbie Robinson, on June 11,2010, Nebraska ended the universitys affiliation with the Big 12 Conference and joined the Big Ten Conference beginning in the 2011 season. The Huskers team began its history as the Old Gold Knights, the name Cornhuskers first appeared in the school newspaper as We Have Met The Cornhuskers And They Are Ours referring to a 20–18 upset victory over Iowa in 1893. The term Cornhuskers was referring to Iowa in that instance, in 1899, Cy Sherman was the first person to refer to the Nebraska football team as the Cornhuskers and the team has used that name since 1900. Nebraska football began play in 1890 with a 10–0 victory over the Omaha YMCA on Thanksgiving Day, the football program started strong and experienced success from the very beginning, going twenty-eight years straight with only a single losing season. Until the 1–7–1 losing season in 1899 in coach A. Edwin Branchs only year at the helm, george Flippin was the first African-American athlete at Nebraska and only the fifth black athlete at a predominantly white university. Because of Flippins presence on the roster, Missouri refused to play a game with Nebraska at Omaha in 1892. The result was a 1–0 forfeit, Nebraskas 4th coach, Frank Crawford was the first paid head football coach at Nebraska. Eddie Robbie Robinson and Fielding H. Oglethorpe University is a private, liberal arts college in Brookhaven, a city adjoining the northern edge of Atlanta, in the U. S. state of Georgia. Originally chartered in 1835, it was named in honor of General James Edward Oglethorpe, Oglethorpe University was chartered in 1835 in Midway, just south of the city of Milledgeville, then the state capital. The school was built and, at time, governed by the Presbyterian Church. The American Civil War led to the schools closing from 1862 to 1866, the college followed the relocation of the capital to Atlanta. In 1870, it began holding classes at the present site of Atlanta City Hall, plagued by financial difficulties, the school closed its doors after only two years. Oglethorpe College was re-chartered as an institution in 1913. In 1915 the cornerstone to the new campus was laid at its present location on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, the person behind rebuilding Oglethorpe was Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, whose grandfather Ferdinand Jacobs had served on the faculty of Old Oglethorpe. Jacobs would serve as president for three decades. In the early 1940s Oglethorpe University had a medical school, under the direction of Dr. John Bernard, the university was given several elephants for research, who had been poisoned by the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. After the students had finished dissecting the animals they were buried under what is today as the Philip Weltner Library. Oglethorpe University became Oglethorpe College in 1965, and reclaimed the designation university in 1972, many of Oglethorpes campus buildings were built in a Gothic revival architecture style. This area of the 100-acre campus is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, in December 2009, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully reaffirmed the Universitys accreditation. Oglethorpes collegiate coat-of-arms is emblazoned with three heads and the Latin inscription Nescit Cedere, meaning He does not know how to give up. The Conant Performing Arts Center, completed in 1997, served as the home of Georgia Shakespeare until fall 2014. The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art opened in 1984 and is located on the top floor of the Philip Weltner Library, the two galleries, the South and Skylight, and gift shop cover 7,000 square feet. Bringing in thousands of visitors each year, the museum has become an important point of interest in Atlantas art community, in 1994, Lupton Hall, Phoebe Hearst Hall, Lowry Hall and Hermance Stadium were added to the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, a district including part or all of the 100-acre campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Phillips University was a private, coeducational institution of higher education located in Enid, Oklahoma, United States, from 1906 to 1998. It was affiliated with the Christian Church and it included an undergraduate college and a graduate seminary. The university was home to the Enid-Phillips Symphony Orchestra. Originally named Oklahoma Christian University, the school was founded by Dr. Ely Vaughn Zollars on October 9,1906, enid-area businessmen raised $150,000 and purchased a 40-acre campus east of Enid. M. Funding for the operation of the University was supplied by T. W. Phillips of Butler, Pennsylvania, following Phillips death in 1912 the University was renamed in his honor. During World War II, the Permanente ship builders manufactured a victory ship named after the university called the SS Phillips Victory, Oklahoma Christian University held its first classes September 17,1907. The first years enrollment was 256 students, and of the freshman class, Phillips High School was created in 1907 as a preparatory school at the same time to prepare students for college-level courses, and continued operations until 1925. The school became affiliated with the North Central Association of Colleges on March 23,1919, in 1987, Phillips Graduate Seminary incorporated as a freestanding institution independent of Phillips University. It is now known as Phillips Theological Seminary, and is located in Tulsa, currently, Phillips Theological Seminary houses the transcripts of the alumni of Phillips University. Phillips University also ran a business school which awarded MBA degrees. It also had an international community of students from more than 20 countries. The schools sports teams were called the Haymakers, for one year,1920, the school was a member of the Southwest Athletic Conference. Southwest Conference

The Southwest Conference was an NCAA Division I college athletic conference in the United States that existed from 1914 to 1996. Composed primarily of schools from Texas, at times the conference included schools from Oklahoma. After a long period of stability, Arkansas left in 1991 to join the Southeastern Conference, by March 1,1914 a number of schools had responded favorably to the idea. The first organizational meeting of the conference was set to be held on April 30,1914, the date was changed because representatives from every school could not make it then. It was ultimately held on May 5 and 7,1914 at the Oriental Hotel in Dallas, Texas and it was chaired by L. Theo Bellmont. Originally, Bellmont wanted Louisiana State University and the University of Mississippi to join the conference as well, the Southwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference became an official body on December 8,1914, at a formal meeting at the Rice Hotel in Houston. Rice University left the conference in 1916, only to re-join in 1918, phillips University was a conference member for one year. Oklahoma left in 1919 to join the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association, however, the series between Texas and Oklahoma would continue as a non-conference matchup in the annual Red River Rivalry game held in Dallas. From 1925 until 1991, the University of Arkansas would be the only member not located within the state of Texas. By 1925, the name was shortened to simply Southwest Conference. After its organizational years, the conference settled into regularly scheduled meetings among its members, the SWC would be guided by seven commissioners, the first of whom, P. W. St. Clair, was appointed in 1938. In 1940, the conference took control of the then five-year-old Cotton Bowl Classic, Texas Technological College joined the SWC in 1958, followed by the University of Houston for the 1976 season. The conference celebrated its glory years in the 1960s, dominated by two teams, Texas and Arkansas. Texas won the 1963 National Championship, and Arkansas won a National Championship in 1964 in the Football Writers Association of America, in 1969, Texas won another National Championship by beating #2-ranked Arkansas 15-14 in the regular seasons final game. The 1969 Arkansas-Texas game in Fayetteville, Arkansas, attended by President Richard Nixon, is counted among the greatest college football games ever played. Texas also won the 1970 United Press International National Championship, which until 1974 was awarded prior to the bowl games, opponents usually were the runners-up from the Big 8 Conference or the Southeastern Conference, although independents Penn State and Notre Dame were also often featured. From the 1940s onward, the Cotton Bowl Classic was counted among the four bowl games. However, in the 1990s, the game declined in importance, in 1977, Notre Dame became the last team to win a national championship in the Cotton Bowl Classic by beating Texas in the January 1978 game

San Diego State University is a public research university in San Diego, California, and is the largest and oldest higher education institution in San Diego County. Founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, it is the third-oldest university in the 23-member California State University, SDSU has a Fall 2016 student body of 34,688 and an alumni base of more than 280,000. The Carnegie Foundation has designated San Diego State University a Doctoral University with Higher Research Activity, in the 2015–16 fiscal year, the university obtained $130 million in public and private funding—a total of 707 awards—up from $120.6 million the previous fiscal year. SDSU sponsors the second highest number of Fulbright Scholars in the State of California, since 2005, the university has produced over 65 Fulbright student scholars. The university generates over $2.4 billion annually for the San Diego economy, while 60 percent of SDSU graduates remain in San Diego, making SDSU a primary educator of the regions work force. Established on March 13,1897, San Diego State University first began as the San Diego Normal School and it was located on a 17-acre campus on Park Boulevard in University Heights. It opened with seven faculty members and 91 students, the curriculum was limited to English, history. In 1923, the San Diego Normal School became San Diego State Teachers College, by the 1930s the school had outgrown its original campus. In 1931 it moved to its current location on a mesa at what was then the edge of San Diego. In 1935, the school expanded its offerings beyond teacher education, in 1960, San Diego State College became a part of the California State Colleges system, now known as The California State University. Finally in 1972 San Diego State College became California State University, San Diego, John F. Kennedy, then the President of the United States of America, gave the graduation commencement address at San Diego State University on June 6,1963. Kennedy was given a doctorate degree in law at the ceremony. In 1964, this event was registered as California Historical Landmark #798, on May 29,1964, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. addressed a near-capacity audience in the Open Air Theater. King discussed his vision for the future and called for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in April 2012, his Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama spoke at SDSUs Viejas Arena as part of his Compassion Without Borders tour. The San Diego State Aztecs football team represents San Diego State University in the sport of American football. The Aztecs compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletics Association and they play their homes games at Qualcomm Stadium and are currently coached by Rocky Long. They have won conference championships and three national championships at the small college division. They were scheduled to become a member of the Big East Conference in July 2013, but on January 17. San Diego State University was originally two separate schools, San Diego Normal School had school colors of white and gold. San Diego Junior College had school colors of blue and gold and they decided to merge schools in 1921 to form San Diego State College. The first school colors of SDSC were blue, white and gold, during the 1921 school year they had their first football game. The central athletic figure at San Diego State at the time was Charles E. Peterson and he had originally been appointed in 1916 as a physical education instructor. After serving in World War I, President Hardy prevailed upon him to return, initially, Peterson taught all the mens physical education classes and coached all the intercollegiate teams. After the athletic teams were established in 1921, media referred to the teams as Staters or professors, the school newspaper tried to encourage Wampus Cats during its coverage of the 1923–24 school year. In the fall of 1924, Athletic Director C. E. Peterson urged the students to select a nickname and the school newspaper, The Paper Lantern, invited suggestions. Over the next few issues, names such as Panthers, Balboans and Thoroughbreds were suggested and submitted to a committee of Dean Al Peterson, C. E. Peterson, in 1925, student leaders chose the nickname Aztecs over such other suggestions as Balboans. They felt the terminology was more representative of a southwest image, in February 1925, President Hardy gave his formal approval to the Aztec nickname and teams adopted that identity within a week. Purple and gold were adopted for the 1922–23 term but this became a problem because the colors were the same as St. Augustine High School and it didnt go over very well when one couldnt tell the difference between an Aztec lettermans sweater and a high school sweater. Also, purple and gold were the colors of Whittier College, not to mention the fact that manufacturers of Aztec merchandise in that era refused to guarantee the color fastness of San Diego States purple hues. That was followed by two days of voting the following month where students were to decide between Scarlet and Black and the colors, Purple and Gold. On January 19,1928 the tally was 346–201 in favor of Scarlet and Black, Don Coryell became the SDSC head coach in 1961, while in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. He led the Aztecs to two small college undefeated seasons in 1966 and 1968 and from the College Division to the University Division in 1969, San Diego State was a charter member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, which was founded on July 1,1969

The 1921 Centre vs. Harvard football game, played October 29,1921, was a college football game between Centre College and Harvard University. Centre beat Harvard 6–0, in what is considered one of the greatest upsets in college football history. The teams first met in 1920, at Harvard Stadium in the Boston neighborhood of Allston, with Harvard coming off a Rose Bowl victory, coming into the Centre game, Harvard was also undefeated and unscored upon in the 1920 season. The Centre Praying Colonels shocked Harvard in the 1920 game simply by taking a 14–7 halftime lead, but, in the second half, Centre withered before the superior Harvard squad, and Harvard won the game 31–14. Following the game, Harvards captain offered the game ball to Centres quarterback Bo McMillin, after a scoreless half and early in the third quarter, Red Roberts told McMillin its time to score, ride my hump and McMillin ran for a 32-yard touchdown. He dodged three of Harvards secondary, bob Fisher said after the game In Bo McMillin Centre has a man who is probably the hardest in the country to stop. All around Danville students painted the formula of C6H0. The Centre victory was a shock, but perhaps not a fluke, the team would finish the 1921 season 10–1, defeating several of the nations powerhouses including VPI, Auburn, Arizona, and Clemson. Their only defeat was a 22–14 loss to powerful Texas A&M in The Dixie Classic, Dallas, Texas, up until their final game of the season the Colonels outscored their opponents by a margin of 314 to 6. In 1950, the Associated Press named C6H0 the greatest sports upset of the first half of the 20th century, in 2005, The New York Times called it arguably the upset of the century in college football. In 2006, ESPN named it the third-biggest upset in the 138-year history of college football, on the 75th anniversary of C6H0, Centre challenged Harvard to a rematch. Centre Colonels football

The Centre Colonels football team, historically also known as the Praying Colonels, represents Centre College in NCAA Division III competition. The Colonels currently play in the Southern Athletic Association, which was established in 2011, before the establishment of the SAA, Centre played 50 seasons in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Despite the schools size, the football team has historically had success. At the end of the 2008 season, the ranked as the 12th winningest school in Division III with an all-time record of 509–374–37. On April 9,1880, a Centre College team traveled to Lexington to play against Transylvania University in the first football game south of the Ohio River. The Colonels lost that game, and a rematch at home later in the month, the first officially recognized game of Centre and the University of Kentucky took place in 1891. In that series, the Colonels compiled an 20–13–2 record before the Kentucky athletic council decided to permanently drop Centre from their schedule after the 1929 season, from 1917 to 1924, Centre compiled a 57–8 record while playing against some of the best teams in the nation. After the 1920 season, Centre faced Texas Christian in the Fort Worth Classic, the Colonels convincingly routed them, 63–7. The 1921 Centre–Harvard game resulted in one of the most shocking upsets in football, with the Colonels winning. The star of game, back Alvin Bo McMillin, was twice named a consensus All-American. Center Red Weaver was named a consensus All-American alongside him in 1919, the Colonels finished the 1921 season undefeated, outscoring their opponents, 314-6. In the Dixie Classic, precursor to the modern Cotton Bowl Classic, Centre faced Texas A&M. Miscues contributed to the Colonels defeat and this is also the game in which Texas A&Ms 12th man tradition originated. In 1924 Centre defeated Georgia and Alabama and claims a southern title, as early as 1927 it was noticed this prior success was over. Centre again found success during the 1950s, in 1951, the Colonels finished the season with a 5–1 record and were invited to play Northern Illinois State in the Corn Bowl. The invitation, however, was rejected by the administration who wished to de-emphasize football. From 1954 to 1956, Centre compiled a winning streak. In 1955, the undefeated Colonels were again invited to a game, the Tangerine Bowl. In recent years, Centre has secured eight SCAC championships between 1980 and 2003, jack Teel Bruner, a safety from 1982 to 1985, became the second Centre Colonel inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame
