Ryszard Horowitz

Ryszard Horowitz is a Polish photographer. He is recognized as a pioneer of special effects photography that predates digital imaging, Horowitz was born in Kraków, Poland on May 5,1939. Four months later, Ryszards entire family were forced into concentration camps following the German invasion of Poland, from September 1944 he was imprisoned at Auschwitz and later became known as being among the youngest known people to survive Auschwitz concentration camp and to be listed on Schindlers list. At the wars end, five-year old Ryszard was reunited with his family after his mother found him in an orphanage, Horowitz began taking pictures at the age of fourteen. For a brief period of time during his childhood he grew up alongside Roman Polański with whom he created his first photographic enlarger from cardboard. In 1956, the Polish government began awarding subsidies to encourage new and original art forms and Kraków suddenly emerged as a center of jazz, painting, theater. For two years, beginning in 1959, Ryszard studied art at the High School of Fine Arts in Kraków and it was at this time that he became interested in photography, particularly the work of American photographers. Jazz music was of particular interest to Horowitz as a photography student and he photo documented the birth of Polish Jazz and in 1958 photographed jazz legends such as Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Sonny Rollins at the Newport Jazz Festival. Ryszard immigrated to the United States in 1959 and enrolled at New Yorks Pratt Institute in the commercial, here he encountered his mentors, Richard Avedon and Alexey Brodovitch. Horowitz took part in seminars led by Brodovitch and worked as an assistant for Avedon in 1963. After graduating from Pratt in 1962, Horowitz began working in film and television and graphic design companies, in 1967 he opened his own photography studio in New York City. Early in his career, to such effects he used a multitude of photographic techniques such as darkroom retouching, multiple film exposures. The City of Lost Children is a 1995 science fantasy drama film directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, written by Jeunet and Gilles Adrien, and starring Ron Perlman. An international co-production of companies from France, Germany, and Spain, the music score was composed by Angelo Badalamenti. It was entered into the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Krank, a demented scientist, kidnaps children from a port city to steal their dreams, as he is incapable of having his own. Among them is Denree, the little brother of carnival strongman and former whaler One. Assisting him is a girl named Miette, a member of a thieves guild of orphaned children. They delve into the world of a cult and discover the connection between Krank and Denree. Krank is both aided and hindered by his family, a group of bioengineered beings created by an absent genius and they support themselves by supplying prosthetic eyes and ears to the cult, which believes the items can help them see a deeper reality. In return, the cult abducts children to be subjects for Kranks experiments, Krank uses a machine to steal childrens dreams for himself. However, he does not understand that by kidnapping the children, he frightens them and causes them to have only nightmares, miettes guild hires One to help them steal a large safe. The theft is successful but the safe is lost in the harbor when One is distracted by seeing Denrees kidnappers, the guild orders circus performer Marcello to return One to them. Marcello allows Miette to fall in the harbor and drown while rescuing One from the cult, Miette is rescued by an amnesiac diver living beneath the harbor, who bears resemblance to a group of clones in Kranks family. After an accident revives Miette, she takes some valuables from the stolen safe and she finds One and Marcello both drowning their sorrows in a bar. Upon seeing Miette alive, the remorseful Marcello lets One leave with her and they all converge on the rig, the diver to destroy it and the duo to rescue Denree. Miette is almost killed by the duplicitous Martha before the diver arrives, in the dream world, Miette meets Krank and makes a deal with him to replace Denree as the source of the dream, Krank fears a trap but plays along, believing himself to be in control. Miette then uses her imagination to control the dream and turn it into an infinite loop, the film is widely regarded as a steampunk film as the typical stylistic features of arcane machinery are pervasive throughout. A video game based on the film was released in the United States and in parts of Europe for the PC first, players take on the role of Miette and confront puzzles in an adventure game format. The Quick and the Dead is a 1995 American western film directed by Sam Raimi, and starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. The screenplay was written by Simon Moore but includes contributions from Joss Whedon, the story focuses on The Lady, a gunfighter who rides into the frontier town of Redemption, controlled by John Herod. The Lady joins a deadly dueling competition in an attempt to revenge for her fathers death. Simon Moores script was purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment in May 1993, development was fast tracked after director Sam Raimis hiring, and principal photography began in Old Tucson Studios in Arizona on November 21,1993. The film was distributed by TriStar Pictures and was released in the US on February 10,1995 to a box office performance. This was Russell Crowes American film debut and this was Woody Strodes final performance, as well as the last theatrical release of Roberts Blossom who died in 2011. The phrase the quick and the dead is from the Book of Common Prayer and its version of the Apostles Creed, the plot of this film bears no resemblance to that of the 1987 film of the same name, which was based on a western novel by Louis LAmour. While there she meets Cort, a former Herod henchman turned preacher whom Herod has captured and forced to enter the contest, during her first night in town, The Lady saves Corts life by shooting through the rope Herods men had used to hang him. She also meets The Kid, a young man who runs the general store. The Kid believes Herod is his father and that he can earn his fathers respect by entering and winning the contest. In the first round of duels The Kid defeats a Swedish quick-draw champion while Herod kills a braggart named Ace Hanlon, the Lady defeats an enemy she had previously left shackled to a wagon. Cort, who has renounced violence and doesnt have a weapon, is taken to the general store, Herod buys Cort a gun and decrees that Cort can only have one bullet at a time so that he doesnt shoot his way out of town. Despite telling everyone he wouldnt fight, Cort winds up drawing his gun, during a rainstorm Herod meets with Clay Cantrell, a professional gunfighter hired by the townspeople to kill Herod. Before they duel, Herod changes the rules and proclaims that all contests are now to the death, after killing Cantrell, Herod angrily addresses the townspeople and informs them that he will continue to raise his taxes on them until they understand that he is in charge of everything. During a rainstorm that evening The Lady faces off with Eugene Dred after Dred rapes a girl at the saloon. She defeats him but spares his life and returns to the bar, the next day, Cort is slated to fight Spotted Horse, an American Indian who claims he cannot be killed by bullets. The Lady, still upset over killing Dred the night before, saddles up, Cort narrowly beats Spotted Horse after having to beg for a second bullet. The Lady is found at a cemetery by Doc Wallace

Cannes is a city located on the French Riviera. It is a commune of France located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, and host city of the annual Cannes Film Festival, Midem, the city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels and restaurants, and for several conferences. On 3 November 2011 it also played host to the G20 organisation of industrialised nations, by the 2nd century BC, the Ligurian Oxybii established a settlement here known as Aegitna. Historians are unsure what the name means, the area was a fishing village used as a port of call between the Lérins Islands. In 69 AD, it became the scene of violent conflict between the troops of Otho and Vitellius, in the 10th century, the town was known as Canua. The name may derive from canna, a reed, Canua was probably the site of a small Ligurian port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill, suggested by Roman tombs discovered here. Le Suquet housed an 11th-century tower which overlooked swamps where the city now stands, most of the ancient activity, especially protection, was on the Lérins Islands and the history of Cannes is closely tied to the history of the islands. An attack by the Saracens in 891, who remained until the end of the 10th century, the insecurity of the Lérins islands forced the monks to settle on the mainland, at the Suquet. Construction of a castle in 1035 fortified the city by then known as Cannes, one took a century to build. Around 1530, Cannes detached from the monks who had controlled the city for hundreds of years, during the 18th century, both the Spanish and British tried to gain control of the Lérins Islands but were chased away by the French. The islands were controlled by many, such as Jean-Honoré Alziary. They had many different purposes, at the end of the 19th century, henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux bought land at the Croix des Gardes and constructed the villa Eleonore-Louise. His work to improve living conditions attracted the English aristocracy, who built winter residences. At the end of the 19th century, several railways were completed, in Cannes, projects such as the Boulevard Carnot and the rue dAntibes were carried out. After the closure of the Casino des Fleurs, an establishment was built for the rich winter clientele. This casino was demolished and replaced by the new Palace in 1979, in the 20th century, new luxury hotels such as the Carlton, Majestic, Martinez, and JW Marriott Cannes were built. The city was modernised with a centre, a post office. The Palme dOr is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1955 by the organising committee, from 1939 to 1954, the highest prize was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. In 1964, it was replaced again by the Grand Prix du Festival before being reintroduced in 1974 as the Palme dOr again. In 1954, the Jury of the Festival de Cannes suggested giving an award titled the Grand Prix of the International Film Festival with a new design each year from a contemporary artist. At the end of 1954, the Festivals Board of Directors invited several jewellers to submit designs for a palm, in tribute to the coat of arms of the City of Cannes. The original design by the jeweller Lucienne Lazon had the lower extremity of the stalk forming a heart. In 1955, the first Palme dOr was awarded to Delbert Mann for Marty, and it remained the highest award until 1964, as of 2015, Jane Campion is the only female director to have won the Palme dOr, for The Piano. These choices were due to a Cannes policy that forbids the Palme dOr-winning film from receiving any additional awards, according to Spielberg, Had the casting been 3% wrong, it wouldnt have worked like it did for us. Underground, is a 1995 comedy-drama film directed by Emir Kusturica, with a screenplay co-written by the director and Dušan Kovačević. It is also known by the subtitle Once Upon a Time There Was One Country, the film uses the epic story of two friends to portray a Yugoslav history from the beginning of World War II until the beginning of Yugoslav Wars. The film was an international co-production with companies from Yugoslavia, France, Germany, Czech Republic, the theatrical version is 163 minutes long. In interviews, Kusturica stated that his original version ran for over 320 minutes, Underground won the Palme dOr at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. It was Kusturicas second such award after When Father Was Away on Business, the film was selected as the Serbian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Underground depicts the life of two friends throughout World War II, Cold War, and the Yugoslav Wars, riding atop a horse carriage while tailed and serenaded by a brass orchestra, theyre drunkenly singing and shooting their way through the citys downtown. They pass through Kalemegdan and shout salutes to Markos brother Ivan whos an animal keeper in the Belgrade Zoo. A stutterer with a leg, Ivan is already up to feed the animals. As the drunk duo pulls up in front of Blackys home, Blacky goes into the house while Marko proceeds on and picks up a street prostitute before disappearing into his house with her. Suddenly, the roar of the planes is heard, and Nazi bombs begin falling on Belgrade, in the ensuing chaos, as people run for cover, unflinching Blacky and Marko show no signs of panic. After the air raid is over, Blacky goes out against the wishes of his wife, encountering building ruins and escaped wild animals from the zoo, he also runs into disconsolate Ivan carrying a baby chimp named Soni. Blackys parting piece of advice to his best friends brother is a stern and you want the Germans to see you like that and laugh at you. Before giving him money to buy milk for the monkey. Royal Yugoslav Armys resistance is broken, and Nazis soon occupy. Blacky starts operating clandestinely as a communist activist along with Marko and their activism mostly consists of stealing German weapons shipments as well as jewellery and other valuables from the citys elite. Blacky occasionally visits his mistress Natalija Zovkov whos been assigned to a special actors labour brigade thats helping the rebuilding effort under German occupational control. Meanwhile, Marko has set up weapons storage and hideaway spot in the cellar of his grandfathers house, following their interception of a large trainload of weapons, Marko and Blacky are mentioned by name and identified as dangerous bandits in Nazi radio bulletins. While Blacky is off hiding in the woods as Germans are intensifying door-to-door raids in the city, Marko takes Vera, Ivan, Vera is due any minute and gets contractions immediately upon entering the cellar

Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. On 1 July 2014, co-founder and former head of French pay-TV operator Canal+ Pierre Lescure took over as President of the festival, the Board of Directors also appointed Gilles Jacob as Honorary President of the festival. The 2016 Cannes Film Festival took place between 11 and 22 May 2016, australian film director George Miller was the President of the Jury. I, Daniel Blake, directed by British director Ken Loach, in 2017, The Festival de Cannes will celebrate its 70th anniversary edition from May 17 to 28. In 1947, the festival was held as the Festival du film de Cannes, at that time the principle of equality was introduced, with a jury made up of only one representative per country. The festival is now held at the Palais des Festivals, expressly constructed for the occasion, although for its 1949 inaugural the roof was unfinished, the festival was not held in 1948 and 1950 on account of budgetary problems. Although its origins may be attributed in part to the French desire to compete with Autumns Venice Film Festival, in 1955, the Palme dOr was created, replacing the Grand Prix du Festival which had been given until that year. In 1957, Dolores del Rio was the first female member of the jury as a Sélection officielle – Member, in 1959, the Marché du Film was founded, giving the festival a commercial character and facilitating exchanges between sellers and buyers in the film industry. Today it has become the first international platform for film commerce, in 1962, the International Critics Week was born, created by the French Union of Film Critics as the first parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival. Its goal was to showcase first and second works by directors all over the world. In 1965, an hommage was paid to Jean Cocteau after his death, the next year, Olivia de Havilland was named the first female president of the festival. The 1968 festival was halted on 19 May, some directors, such as Carlos Saura and Miloš Forman, had withdrawn their films from the competition. The filmmakers achieved the reinstatement of the President, and they founded the Film Directors Society that same year, during the 1970s, important changes occurred in the Festival. In 1972, Robert Favre Le Bret was named the new President and he immediately introduced an important change in the selection of the participating films. Until that date, the different countries chose which films would represent them in the festival, Bessy created one committee to select French films, and another for foreign films. In 1978, Gilles Jacob assumed the President position, introducing the Caméra dOr award, in 1983, a new, much bigger Palais des Festivals et des Congrès was built to host the Festival. It was nicknamed The Bunker and provoked many reactions against it, in 1984, Pierre Viot replaced Robert Favre Le Bret as President of the Festival. Emir Kusturica

Emir Kusturica is a Serbian filmmaker, actor and musician. He has been recognized for several internationally acclaimed feature films, as well as his projects in town-building and he has competed at the Cannes Film Festival on five occasions and won the Palme dOr twice, as well as the Best Director prize for Time of the Gypsies. He has also won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for Arizona Dream, in addition he was also named Commander of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Since the mid-2000s, Kusturicas primary residence has been in Drvengrad and he had portions of the historic village reconstructed for the film. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republika Srpska since 9 November 2011, a lively youth, young Emir was by his own admission a borderline delinquent while growing up in the Sarajevo neighbourhood of Gorica. After graduating from FAMU, Kusturica began directing short films in Yugoslavia. He made his film debut in 1981 with Do You Remember Dolly Bell. A coming-of-age drama that won the prestigious Silver Lion for Best First Work at that years Venice Film Festival, the same year, at the age of 27, he became lecturer at the newly established Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo, a job that he performed until 1988. He was also art director of Open Stage Obala, Kusturica wrote the screenplays for both Do You Remember Dolly Bell. and When Father Was Away on Business. In 1989 Kusturica earned more accolades for Time of the Gypsies, a film about Romani culture, in 1989 he was a member of the jury at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival. Kusturica continued to highly regarded films into the next decade, including his American debut. He won the Palme dOr for his black comedy epic, Underground, based upon a scenario of Dušan Kovačević and he also taught Film Directing at Columbia Universitys Graduate Film Division. In 1998, he won the Venice Film Festivals Silver Lion for Best Direction for Black Cat, White Cat, the music for the film was composed by the Belgrade-based band No Smoking Orchestra. In 2001, Kusturica directed Super 8 Stories, a road and concert movie about The No Smoking Orchestra. He was appointed President of the Jury of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and his film, Maradona, a documentary on Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona, was released in Italy in May 2007. It premiered in France during the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and his film Promise Me This premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. In June 2007, Kusturica directed the video to Manu Chaos single Rainin in Paradize. Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a French film director and screenwriter known for the films Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Alien, Resurrection and Amélie. Jean-Pierre Jeunet was born in Roanne, Loire, France and he bought his first camera at the age of 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinémation Studios. He befriended Marc Caro, a designer and comic book artist who became his collaborator and co-director. They met at a festival in Annecy in the 1970s. Together, Jeunet and Caro directed award-winning animations and their first live action film was The Bunker of the Last Gunshots, a short film about soldiers in a bleak futuristic world. Jeunet also directed numerous advertisements and music videos, such as Jean Michel Jarres Zoolook and they next made The City of Lost Children, a dark, multi-layered fantasy film about a mad scientist who steals childrens dreams so that he can live indefinitely. The success of The City of Lost Children led to an invitation to direct the film in the Alien series, Alien. Caro ended up assisting for a few weeks, with costumes and set design but afterwards, decided to work on a career in illustration. Jeunet directed Amélie, starring Audrey Tautou, for this film, Jeunet also gained a European Film Award for Best Director. In 2004, Jeunet released A Very Long Engagement, an adaptation of the novel by Sébastien Japrisot, the film, starring Audrey Tautou and Jodie Foster, chronicled a womans search for her missing lover after World War I. In 2009, he released Micmacs which was about man and his friends who come up with an intricate, Jeunet has also directed numerous commercials including a 225 film for Chanel N°5 featuring his frequent collaborator Audrey Tautou. In 2013, Jeunet released The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet an adaptation of Reif Larsens book, the film was shot in English at various locations in Canada and in Washington, D. C

Sam Raimi

His most recent work is the 2013 Disney fantasy film Oz the Great and Powerful. Raimi has also produced several television series and founded his own production company, Renaissance Pictures. Recently, he worked as the producer of The Possession, Raimi was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is the fourth of five born to Celia Barbara and Leonard Ronald Raimi. He was raised in Conservative Judaism, his ancestors emigrated from Russia, Raimi graduated from Groves High School and later went on to attend Michigan State University, where he majored in English but left after three semesters to film The Evil Dead. Raimi became fascinated with making films when his father brought a movie camera home one day and he began to make Super 8 movies with childhood friend Bruce Campbell. In college, he teamed up with his brothers roommate Robert Tapert and Campbell to shoot Within the Woods and he began work on his third film Crimewave, intended as a live-action comic book—the film was not successful, due in part to unwanted studio intervention. Raimi then returned to the genre with the seminal Evil Dead II. With his brother Ivan Raimi, Sam Raimi also wrote Easy Wheels, a long-time comic book buff, he then attempted to adapt The Shadow into a movie, but was unable to secure the rights, so he created his own super-hero, Darkman. Army of Darkness, the movie in the Evil Dead trilogy, was a box office flop. Raimi achieved great critical and commercial success with the blockbuster Spider-Man, the movie has grossed over US$800 million worldwide, spawning two sequels, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, both directed by Raimi and both grossing roughly $800 million each. After the completion of the third Spider-Man film, he planned on producing two more sequels but could not find a satisfactory script, Raimi frequently collaborates with Joel and Ethan Coen, beginning when Joel was one of the editors of Evil Dead. The Coens co-wrote Crimewave and The Hudsucker Proxy with Raimi in the mid-1980s, Raimi made cameo appearances in Millers Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy, and with Joel Coen in Spies Like Us. The Coen brothers gave Raimi advice on shooting in snow for A Simple Plan, the film was written by his childhood friend writer-director Mike Binder and shot at the camp that they both attended when they were younger. Raimi also produced the entire The Grudge franchise, according to Entertainment Weekly, Raimi had expressed an interest in directing a film version of The Hobbit, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In 2008, Guillermo del Toro was selected as the director, Raimi may direct By Any Means Necessary, the next film based on the Jack Ryan CIA character created by Tom Clancy for Paramount Pictures. Enki Bilal is a French comic book creator, comics artist and film director. Born Enes Bilalović in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia, to a Slovak mother, at age 14, he met René Goscinny and with his encouragement applied his talent to comics. He produced work for Goscinnys Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in the 1970s, publishing his first story, Le Bal Maudit, in 1975, Bilal began working with script writer Pierre Christin on a series of dark and surreal tales, resulting in the body of work titled Légendes dAujourdhui. He is best known for the Nikopol trilogy, which more than a decade to complete. Bilal wrote the script and did the artwork, the final chapter, Froid Équateur, was chosen book of the year by the magazine Lire and is acknowledged by the inventor of chess boxing, Iepe Rubingh as the inspiration for the sport. The last book in the Hatzfeld tetralogy, deals with the breakup of Yugoslavia from a future viewpoint, the first installment came in 1998 in the shape of Le Sommeil du Monstre opening with the main character, Nike, remembering the war in a series of traumatic flashbacks. The third chapter of the tetralogy is Rendez-vous à Paris, which was the fifth best selling new comic of 2006 and his cinematic career was revived with the expensive Immortel, his first attempt to adapt his books to the screen. The film divided critics, some panning the use of CGI characters but others seeing it as a faithful reinterpretation of the books, on May 13,2008 a video game based on the Nikopol trilogy was announced titled Nikopol, Secrets of the Immortals. In 2012, Bilal was featured in an exhibition at The Louvre. The exhibition, titled The Ghosts of the Louvre, ran from December 20,2012 to March 18,2013, the exhibition was organized by Fabrice Douar, and featured a series of paintings of Ghosts, done atop photographs that Bilal took of the Louvres collection. Jeanne Moreau is a French actress, singer, screenwriter and director. She won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Seven Days, Seven Nights, the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress for Viva Maria. and the César Award for Best Actress for The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea. She has also been the recipient of several awards, including a BAFTA Fellowship in 1996. Moreau was born in Paris the daughter of Katherine, a dancer who performed at the Folies Bergère, and Anatole-Désiré Moreau, moreaus father was French, her mother was English, a native of Lancashire in England, and of part-Irish descent. Moreaus father was Catholic and her mother, originally a Protestant, when a young girl, the family moved south to Vichy, spending vacations at the ancestral village of Mazirat, a town of 30 houses in a valley in the Allier. It was wonderful there, Moreau said, every tombstone in the cemetery was for a Moreau. During the war, the family was split and Moreau lived with her mother in Paris, Moreau ultimately lost interest in school at age 16 and, after attending Jean Anouilhs Antigone, found her calling as an actor. She later studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and her parents separated permanently while Moreau was at the conservatory and her mother, after 24 difficult years in France, returned to England with Jeannes younger sister, Michelle. In 1947, Moreau made her debut at the Avignon Festival. She debuted at the Comédie-Française in Ivan Turgenevs A Month in the Country and, from the late 1950s, after appearing in several successful films, she began to work with the emerging generation of French film-makers. Nadine Gordimer was a South African writer, political activist and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was recognized as a woman who through her magnificent epic writing has – in the words of Alfred Nobel – been of great benefit to humanity. Gordimers writing dealt with moral and racial issues, particularly apartheid in South Africa, under that regime, works such as Burgers Daughter and Julys People were banned. She was also active in HIV/AIDS causes, Gordimer was born near Springs, Gauteng, an East Rand mining town outside Johannesburg. Her father, Isidore Gordimer, was a Jewish immigrant watchmaker from Žagarė and her mother was from an assimilated family of Jewish origins, Gordimer was raised in a secular household. Gordimers early interest in racial and economic inequality in South Africa was shaped in part by her parents. Conversely, Gordimer saw activism by her mother, whose concern about the poverty, Gordimer also witnessed government repression first-hand as a teenager, the police raided her family home, confiscating letters and diaries from a servants room. Gordimer was educated at a Catholic convent school, but was largely home-bound as a child because her mother, for reasons of her own. Home-bound and often isolated, she began writing at an early age, at the age of 16, she had her first adult fiction published. Gordimer studied for a year at the University of the Witwatersrand and she also became involved in the Sophiatown renaissance. She did not complete her degree, but moved to Johannesburg in 1948, while taking classes in Johannesburg, she continued to write, publishing mostly in local South African magazines. She collected many of early stories in Face to Face. In 1951, the New Yorker accepted Gordimers story A Watcher of the Dead, beginning a long relationship, Gordimer, who said she believed the short story was the literary form for our age, continued to publish short stories in the New Yorker and other prominent literary journals. Gordimers first novel, The Lying Days, was published in 1953, Gordimer had a daughter, Oriane, by her first marriage in 1949 to Gerald Gavron, a local dentist, from whom she was divorced within three years. Their son, Hugo, was born in 1955, and is a filmmaker in New York, Hugo Cassirer later married Sarah Buttrick, and had three children. The arrest of her best friend, Bettie du Toit, in 1960, thereafter, she quickly became active in South African politics, and was close friends with Nelson Mandelas defence attorneys during his 1962 trial. She also helped Mandela edit his famous speech I Am Prepared to Die, when Mandela was released from prison in 1990, she was one of the first people he wanted to see. Waterss 1970s and early 1980s films feature his regular troupe of actors known as the Dreamlanders—among them Divine, Mink Stole, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, and Edith Massey. Starting with Desperate Living, Waters began casting real-life convicted criminals, Waters dabbled in mainstream filmmaking with Hairspray, which introduced Ricki Lake and earned a modest gross of US$8 million in the United States market. In 2002, Hairspray was adapted to a long-running Broadway musical, Waters was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Patricia Ann and John Samuel Waters, who was a manufacturer of fire-protection equipment. His family were upper-middle class Roman Catholics, Waters grew up in Lutherville, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. His boyhood friend and muse Glenn Milstead, later known as Divine, the film Lili inspired an interest in puppets in the seven-year-old Waters, who proceeded to stage violent versions of Punch and Judy for childrens birthday parties. Biographer Robrt L. Pela says that Waters mother believes the puppets in Lili had the greatest influence on Waters subsequent career, Waters was privately educated at the Calvert School in Baltimore. High School in Towson, Maryland, and Calvert Hall College High School in nearby Towson, in 1962, for his 16th birthday, Waters received an 8mm movie camera from his maternal grandmother, Stella Whitaker. Waters first short film was Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, according to Waters, the film was shown only once in a beatnik coffee house in Baltimore, although in later years he has included it in his traveling photography exhibit. Waters enrolled at New York University, the school, however, was not what Waters had in mind, NYU. I was there for about five minutes. I dont know what I was thinking about, I went to one class and they kept talking about Potemkin and that isnt what I wanted to talk about. I had just gone to see Olgas House of Shame and that was what I was more into. Extremely influential to his mind, Waters tells Robert K. Elder in an interview for The Film That Changed My Life, was The Wizard of Oz. I was always drawn to forbidden subject matter in the very, very beginning, the Wizard of Oz opened me up because it was one of the first movies I ever saw. It opened me up to villainy, to screenwriting, to costumes, I think the witch has great, great dialogue. Waters has further credited his influences as, among others, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Federico Fellini, William Castle and he has stated that he takes an equal amount of joy and influence from high-brow art films and sleazy exploitation films. In January 1966, Waters and some friends were caught smoking marijuana on the grounds of NYU, Waters returned to Baltimore, where he completed his next two short films Roman Candles and Eat Your Makeup. These were followed by the feature-length films Mondo Trasho and Multiple Maniacs, Waters films would become Divines primary star vehicles. Angels & Insects is a 1995 romance drama film directed by Philip Haas. It was written by Philip and Belinda Haas with A. S. Byatt after her novella Morpho Eugenia, William Adamson, a brilliant naturalist, has recently returned to Victorian England, staying with the family of his wealthy benefactor, Sir Harold Alabaster. He is penniless after losing all of his possessions in a shipwreck returning from an expedition to the Amazon. William quickly becomes enamored with Sir Harolds eldest daughter, Eugenia, despite his impoverished circumstances, Eugenia proves receptive to his advances and accepts his proposal of marriage. Although Sir Harold grants his approval, Eugenias snobbish brother Edgar takes a dislike to William because of his humble origins. Soon after the marriage, Eugenia informs William that she is pregnant and she insists on naming the boy Edgar after her brother, frustrating William. Eugenias behavior alternates between coldness towards William, locking him out of her room at night, and moments of sexual passion. Over time the couple has four children, although William never warms to them. He instead spends much of his time with the Alabaster children and Matty and he forms a strong bond with Matty Crompton, who encourages his scientific activities and displays a strong intelligence of her own. They collaborate on a book about the colony, which is published in London. One day, during an excursion, William is summoned back to the house by a servant boy who claims that Eugenia wishes to speak to him. He walks into the bedroom, surprising Eugenia and Edgar while they are engaging in incestuous sex, Eugenia then confesses that she and Edgar had been having sex with each other for years and that her fiance committed suicide after discovering this. Eugenia also tells William that even though she knew it was wrong for her to have sex with her brother, William realizes that he has been used by Eugenia and that all of the children are Edgars. Matty reveals her knowledge of the affair to William during a Scrabble-like game by moving around letter tiles that spell INSECT to INCEST. Meeting in her room, she explains that the servants were also aware. William is initially reluctant for them both to go, despite his attraction to Matty, he does not feel that the rain forest is a place for a woman. After she assures him of her strength, and reveals that she loves him, before leaving, William meets with Eugenia one last time and tells her he intends never to return. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a 1995 Belgian-French drama film directed by Marion Hänsel. It was entered into the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, the plot is based on the short story titled Li, by the Greek poet and sailor Nikos Kavvadias. Nikos, a sailor, learns that the company that runs his ship has gone bankrupt, for the few weeks it will take to sell the ship he is on, the ship remains off the coast of Hong Kong. It is boarded by a beggar girl Li, who offers to take care of him in exchange for food for her and her baby brother. Though he claims to have no use for her, Nikos reluctantly agrees to the deal, Nikos struggles with an opium addiction and regret over abandoning his girlfriend and their child. He warms to Li and her brother, treating them as surrogate children, when his final paycheck comes through he decides to return to Europe but not before bringing Li ashore for a day where he meets both her mother and father. Before they part Li and Nikos talk about luck and good fortune, as he boards a new ship to return home he sees that Li has given him a gold dragon embroidered on Shantung silk, the symbol Li had previously told Nikos represented luck

Beyond Rangoon is a 1995 drama film directed by John Boorman about Laura Bowman, an American tourist who vacations in Burma in 1988, the year in which the 8888 Uprising takes place. The film was filmed in Malaysia, and, though a work of fiction, was inspired by real people. Bowman joins, albeit unintentionally, political rallies with university students protesting for democracy. There, they see the brutality of the dictators of the State Law and Order Restoration Council. The film was a selection at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. The film may have had an impact beyond movie screens, however, only weeks into its European run, the Burmese military junta freed Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi after several years under strict house arrest. The celebrated democracy leader thanked the filmmakers in her first interview with the BBC, andy Bowman persuades her sister Laura to go on a trip to Burma after Laura’s husband and son are killed in a home invasion and Laura had gone into a deep depression. One night, unable to sleep because of nightmares, Laura leaves her hotel in Rangoon and she is very impressed by the bravery of Aung San Suu Kyi. When her tour group leaves the country, Laura cannot leave them as her passport was stolen the previous night. While staying behind waiting for her new passport, she meets U Aung Ko and he takes Laura out into the countryside to a Buddhist monastery. The car develops problems, but fortunately they are able to coast to the house of some of Ko’s friends, Laura learns that Ko used to be a college professor, who was banned from teaching for supporting anti-government activity led by his former student Min Han. She has a breakdown and tells Ko what happened to her family, the next morning they learn that the 8888 uprising began the previous day. Ko takes Laura to a station to get back to Rangoon. She sneaks on board, but the soldiers start beating Ko, Laura gets Ko into the car and they leave, pursued by the soldiers, but Ko is shot and wounded. They end up crashing into the Irrawaddy river, but get away from the soldiers and they get on a raft taking bamboo to Rangoon. Laura, who is a doctor operates on Ko to remove the bullet, the next day the raft stops at a village. Laura goes to find drugs to treat Ko and she reluctantly accepts a pistol from one of the crew. At a clinic Laura finds the drugs she needs, but has to shoot a soldier to keep from being raped, when they arrive in Rangoon, the city is in the throes of a full-scale revolt

He has directed a total of 22 films and has received five Academy Award nominations. Boorman was born in Shepperton, Surrey, England, the son of Ivy and he was educated at the Salesian School in Chertsey, Surrey, even though his family was not Roman Catholic. Boorman first began by working as a drycleaner and journalist in the late 1950s and he ran the newsrooms at Southern Television in Southampton and Dover before moving into TV documentary filmmaking, eventually becoming the head of the BBCs Bristol-based Documentary Unit in 1962. While not as successful commercially as Lesters film, it drew good reviews from distinguished critics such as Pauline Kael and Dilys Powell, Lee Marvin gave the then-unknown director his full support, telling MGM he deferred all his approvals on the project to Boorman. Returning to the United Kingdom, he made Leo the Last and this film exhibited the influence of Federico Fellini and even starred Fellini regular Marcello Mastroianni, and won him a Best Director award at Cannes. This film became Boormans first true box office success, earning him several award nominations, at the beginning of the 1970s, Boorman was planning to film The Lord of the Rings and corresponded about his plans with the author, J. R. R. Tolkien. Ultimately the production proved too costly, though elements and themes can be seen in Excalibur. A wide variety of films followed, zardoz, starring Sean Connery, was a post-apocalyptic science fiction piece, set in the 24th century. Boorman was selected as director for Exorcist II, The Heretic, a move that surprised the industry given his antipathy to the original film. Boorman declared, Not only did I not want to do the original film and it was based on Chardins intoxicating Idea that biological evolution was the first step In Gods plan, starting with inert rock, and culminating In humankind. Despite Boormans continued rewriting throughout shooting, the film was rendered incomprehensible, the film, released in June 1977, was a critical and box office disaster. Boorman was denounced by author William Peter Blatty, the author of the original novel The Exorcist, Boorman later admitted that his approach to the film was a mistake. The Heretic is often considered not just the worst film of The Exorcist series, Excalibur, a long-held dream project of Boormans, is a retelling of the Arthurian legend, based on Le Morte DArthur. The production was based in the Republic of Ireland, where Boorman had relocated, for the film he employed all of his children as actors and crew and several of Boormans later films have been family business productions. The film, one of the first to be produced by Orion Films, was a moderate success, Hope and Glory is his most autobiographical movie to date, a retelling of his childhood in London during The Blitz. Produced by Goldcrest Films, with Hollywood financing the film, it proved a box office hit in the US, receiving numerous Oscar, BAFTA, however, his 1990 US-produced comedy about a dysfunctional family, Where the Heart Is, was a major flop. Rospo Pallenbergs original screenplay was adapted into a book of the name by award-winning author Robert Holdstock. The screenplay is based on biographies of writer and critic Lytton Strachey by Michael Holroyd, the film is divided into 6 chapters. Lytton & Carrington 1915, During the Great War, Lytton Strachey is travelling to the country, there he meets Carrington for the first time but confuses her with a boy and does not hide his disappointment. Lytton is due to face a hearing with the due to his open opposition to the war. While taking a hike through the countryside, he tries to kiss Carrington, early in the morning, she walks into his bedroom with the intent of cutting his beard off, but stops at the last minute in contemplation of him sleeping and falls in love with him. Gertler 1916–1918, Mark Gertler tries to have sex with Carrington, Gertler turns to Lytton for aid in wooing her, while trying to help him she falls more deeply in love with him and although he does not fully requite her, he does have feelings for her. While on a trip to Wales he proposes that they together, acting on this, Carrington searches for a house and finds. When Gertler finds out that Carrington and Lytton are moving in together he attacks the couple, Partridge 1918–1921, Carrington later meets and falls in love with Ralph Partridge, who has come back from the war. On their first dinner together, Ralph expresses his rather one-sided points of view which are contrary to Lyttons, Lytton goes on vacation to Italy, Ralph has made very clear his intent of marrying Carrington or leaving altogether to Bolivia to run a sheep farm. Knowing that if Ralph is no longer with him, Lytton will move out of Mill House, she marries Ralph, Ralph introduces his friend Gerald Brenan to Lytton and Carrington. Brenan is planning to leave for Spain in order to improve his education and takes a liking to Carrington, Lytton is successful in the publication of Eminent Victorians and manages to become a man of means. Brenan 1921–1923, Although he tries to be loyal to his friend Ralph, Gerald, Gerald leaves for Spain insisting that Carrington run off with him. She refuses but they continue the relationship until they get caught by Ralph, Lytton manages to avoid the break-up, Ham Spray House 1924–1931, Lytton buys Ham Spray and Carrington, he and Ralph move in. Carrington becomes pregnant by Beacus but has an abortion, Lytton takes an apartment in London where he intends to live with Roger, but it becomes clear that the relationship shall not be long-lived. Lytton 1931–1932, Roger and Lytton break up, during a tea party Lytton suddenly becomes ill, Carrington initially is optimistic but afterwards it becomes evident that he will not recover. Carrington tries to suicide by locking herself in the garage with the car motor running but is rescued by Ralph. When Lytton finally dies, surrounded by Ralph, Carrington and Gerald, he states If this is dying and it was primarily based upon his String Quartet No.3, with which Hampton created a temp track, and wanted as a leitmotif for Lytton Strachey. Dead Man is a 1995 American Western film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It stars Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Billy Bob Thornton, Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover, John Hurt, Michael Wincott, Lance Henriksen, Gabriel Byrne, the film, dubbed a Psychedelic Western by its director, includes twisted and surreal elements of the Western genre. The film is entirely in black-and-white. Neil Young composed the soundtrack with portions he improvised while watching the movie footage. It has been considered by many to be a premier postmodern Western, like much of Jarmuschs work, it has acquired status as a cult film. William Blake, an accountant from Cleveland, Ohio, rides by train to the company town of Machine to assume a promised job as an accountant in the towns metal works. During the trip, the train Fireman warns Blake against the enterprise while passengers shoot buffalo from the train windows. Arriving in town, Blake discovers that the position has already filled, and he is driven from the workplace at gunpoint by John Dickinson. Jobless and without money or prospects, Blake meets Thel Russell and he lets her take him home. Thels ex-boyfriend Charlie surprises them in bed and shoots at Blake, a wounded Blake shoots and kills Charlie with Thels gun before climbing dazedly out the window and fleeing Machine on a stolen horse. Company-owner Dickinson just happens to be Charlies father, and he hires three legendary frontier killers, Cole Wilson, Conway Twill, and Johnny The Kid Pickett to bring Blake back dead or alive. Blake awakens to find a large Native American attempting to dislodge the bullet from his chest, the Native American, calling himself Nobody, reveals that the bullet is too close to Blakes heart to remove, and Blake is effectively walking dead. When he learns Blakes full name, Nobody decides Blake is a reincarnation of William Blake, Nobody resolves to escort Blake to the Pacific Ocean to return him to his proper place in the spirit-world. James Robert Jim Jarmusch is an American film director, screenwriter, actor, producer, editor, and composer. Stranger Than Paradise was added to the National Film Registry in December 2002, as a musician, Jarmusch has composed music for his films and released two albums with Jozef van Wissem. Jarmusch was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, the middle of three children of middle-class suburbanites. F, the first adult film he recalls seeing was the 1958 cult classic Thunder Road, the violence and darkness of which left an impression on the seven-year-old Jarmusch. Another B-movie influence from his childhood was Ghoulardi, an eccentric Cleveland television show which featured horror films, despite his enthusiasm for film, Jarmusch was an avid reader in his youth and had a greater interest in literature, which was encouraged by his grandmother. At one point, he took an apprenticeship with a commercial photographer and he later remarked, Growing up in Ohio was just planning to get out. After graduating from school in 1971, Jarmusch moved to Chicago. At Columbia, he studied English and American literature under professors including New York School avant garde poets Kenneth Koch, at Columbia, he began to write short semi-narrative abstract pieces and edited the undergraduate literary journal The Columbia Review. During his final year at Columbia, Jarmusch moved to Paris for what was initially a summer semester on an exchange program, there, he worked as a delivery driver for an art gallery, and spent most of his time at the Cinémathèque Française. Thats where I saw things I had only read about and heard about – films by many of the good Japanese directors, like Imamura, Ozu, Mizoguchi. When I came back from Paris, I was still writing, Jarmusch graduated from Columbia University in 1975. Broke and working as a musician in New York City after returning from Paris in 1976, despite his lack of experience in filmmaking, his submission of a collection of photographs and an essay about film secured his acceptance into the program. He studied there for four years, meeting fellow students and future collaborators Sara Driver, Tom DiCillo, Howard Brookner, during the late 1970s in New York City, Jarmusch and his contemporaries were part of an alternative culture scene centered on the CBGB music club. In his final year at New York University, Jarmusch worked as an assistant to the film noir director Nicholas Ray. On Jarmuschs return with the script, Ray reacted favourably to his students dissent. Jarmusch was the only person Ray brought to work – as his personal assistant – on Lightning Over Water, Ray died in 1979 after a long fight with cancer. The university, unimpressed with Jarmuschs use of his funding as well as the project itself, Jarmuschs final year university project was completed in 1980 as Permanent Vacation, his first feature film. It had its premiere at the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg and won the Josef von Sternberg Award and it was made on a shoestring budget of around $12,000 in misdirected scholarship funds and shot by cinematographer Tom DiCillo on 16 mm film. Ed Wood is a 1994 American biographical period comedy-drama film directed and produced by Tim Burton, and starring Johnny Depp as cult filmmaker Ed Wood. The film concerns the period in Woods life when he made his films as well as his relationship with actor Bela Lugosi. Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Jeffrey Jones, Lisa Marie, the film was conceived by writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski when they were students at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Due to scheduling conflicts with Airheads, Lehmann had to vacate the directors position, Ed Wood was originally in development at Columbia Pictures, but the studio put the film in turnaround over Burtons decision to shoot in black-and-white. Ed Wood was taken to the Walt Disney Studios, which produced the film through the studios Touchstone Pictures division, the film was released to critical acclaim, but was a box office bomb, making only $5.9 million against an $18 million budget. It won two Academy Awards, Best Supporting Actor for Landau and Best Makeup for Rick Baker, Ve Neill, in 1952, Ed Wood is struggling to join the film industry. Upon hearing of an announcement in Variety magazine that producer George Weiss is trying to purchase Christine Jorgensens life story, Weiss explains that Varietys announcement was a news leak, and it is impossible to purchase Jorgensens rights. The producer decides to fictionalize the film, titled I Changed My Sex, Ed tries to convince Weiss that he is perfect to direct the film because he is a transvestite, but is unsuccessful since Weiss wants a director with experience. Ed meets his longtime idol Bela Lugosi and the two become friends, wanting to restart his fading career, Lugosi expresses interest in being part of the film. Wood persuades Weiss to let him direct the film by convincing him that having a star in the film would sell tickets, and they could sign Bela for a low price. Ed and Weiss argue over the title and subject matter, Weiss has the poster printed. Weiss allows Ed to shoot whatever he wants as long as the film meets the required length, Ed takes to film production with an unusual approach, shooting only one take per scene, giving actors very little direction and using stock footage to fill in gaps. The movie is released to critical and commercial failure, angering Weiss, because of this, Ed is unsuccessful in getting a job at Screen Classics, but Eds girlfriend, Dolores Fuller, tells him that he should try financing his next film independently. Ed is unsuccessful in finding money for Bride of the Atom, Ed meets Loretta King, who he thinks has enough money to fund Bride of the Atom and ends up casting her as the lead instead of Dolores as planned. Filming begins, but is halted when it is revealed that Loretta is actually poor, and Ed has no money to continue production. Ed convinces meat packing industry tycoon Don McCoy to take over funding the film, who agrees as long as the film stars his son Tony as the leading man and the film ends with an explosion. The filming finishes with the title being changed to Bride of the Monster, but Dolores breaks up with Ed after the party because of his circle of friends, his work. Timothy Walter Tim Burton is an American film director, producer, artist, writer and animator. Burton has worked repeatedly with Johnny Depp, who has become a friend of Burton since their first film together. He has also worked with musician Danny Elfman, who has composed scores for all, actress Helena Bonham Carter, Burtons former domestic partner, has appeared in many of his films. Both compilations were published by Steeles Publishing, as a preteen, Burton would make short films in his backyard on Evergreen Street using crude stop motion animation techniques or shoot them on 8 mm film without sound. Burton studied at Burbank High School, but he was not a good student. He was a very introspective person, and found his pleasure in painting, drawing and watching films and his future work would be heavily influenced by the works of such childhood heroes as Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl. After graduating from Burbank High School with Jeff Riekenberg, Burton attended the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, as a student at CalArts, Burton made the shorts Stalk of the Celery Monster and King and Octopus. Stalk of the Celery Monster attracted the attention of Walt Disney Productions animation division and he worked as an animator, storyboard artist and concept artist on films such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron and Tron. His concept art never made it into the finished films, the film was produced by Rick Heinrichs, whom Burton had befriended while working in the concept art department at Disney. The film was shown at the Chicago Film Festival and released, alongside the teen drama Tex, for two weeks in one Los Angeles cinema. Having aired once in 1983 at 10,30 pm on Halloween and promptly shelved, prints of the film are difficult to locate. The short would finally go on display in 2009 at the Museum of Modern Art. It was again shown at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2012, Burtons next live-action short, Frankenweenie, was released in 1984. It tells the story of a boy who tries to revive his dog after it is run over by a car. Filmed in black-and-white, it stars Barret Oliver, Shelley Duvall, after Frankenweenie was completed, Disney fired Burton, under the pretext of him spending the companys resources on doing a film that would be too dark and scary for children to see. Pursuing then an opportunity to make a film, he was approached by Griffin Dunne to direct the black comedy film After Hours. However, after Martin Scorseses project The Last Temptation of Christ was cancelled, not long after, actor Paul Reubens saw Vincent and chose Burton to direct the cinematic spin-off of his popular character Pee-wee Herman. He plays the drums in the band where Manolo sings, more serious and more scrupulous than Carlos, Roberto has repressed homosexual feeling towards his best friend. He has serious issues, he lost a kidney and is a diabetic, being the most vulnerable, Carlos takes advantage of him and bullies him constantly. An argument at Kronen between Pedro and a stranger is resolved by trying between them who can stand for more time to be hanging dangerously from a bridge over a highway, the incident is stopped by the police and Carlos and Pedro are detained. Carlos’s father is a lawyer and he gets the two out of jail soon. It was later released without a rating, the film opens with Telly and a 12-year-old girl making out on a bed. With no adults around, Telly, who is older, persuades the girl. Afterwards, he meets his friend, Casper, and they talk about his sexual experience very crudely, Telly has taken to only having sex with virgins. They go inside a store, where Casper shoplifts a bottle of malt liquor as Telly distracts the cashier. Looking for drugs, food and a place to hang out, they head to their friend Pauls apartment and they arrive at Pauls house, talk about sex and smoke marijuana while watching a skate video. Casper inhales nitrous oxide out of balloons, which Telly considers dangerous, the scene intercuts with a group of girls, among them Ruby and Jennie, talking about sex—each gender contradicting what the other gender says, especially about oral sex. Ruby and Jennie mention that they were tested for STDs at Rubys request. Rubys test is negative, though she has had sexual encounters. She says she has had sex once, with Telly. Jennie spends the rest of the film trying to find Telly, Telly and Casper walk to Tellys house and steal money from Tellys mother, who is preoccupied with taking care of her new baby. They go to Washington Square Park and buy a bag of marijuana from a Rastafari. They then meet up with a few friends to talk and smoke, as they do, Casper and many others taunt a gay couple passing through the park. On the side, Telly briefly talks to Misha, a girl who strongly dislikes Casper, as Casper rides on a skateboard, he carelessly bumps into a man, who furiously threatens him. He pushes Casper, but is struck in the back of the head with a skateboard by Harold, a friend of Telly and Caspers, causing him to collapse. Lawrence Donald Larry Clark is an American film director, photographer, writer and film producer who is best known for his controversial teen film Kids and his photography book Tulsa. His work focuses primarily on youth who casually engage in drug use, underage sex, and violence. Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and he learned photography at an early age. His mother was an itinerant baby photographer, and he was enlisted in the business from the age of 13. His father was a sales manager for the Reader Service Bureau, selling books and magazines door-to-door. In 1959, Clark began injecting amphetamines with his friends, Clark attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he studied under Walter Sheffer and Gerhard Bakker. In 1964, he moved to New York City to freelance and his experiences there led him to publish the 1971 book Tulsa, a photo documentary illustrating his young friends drug use in black and white. Shattering long-held mythical conventions that drugs and violence were an experience solely indicative of the urban landscape and his follow-up was Teenage Lust, an autobiography of his teen past through the images of others. It included his family photos, more teenage drug use, graphic pictures of teenage sexual activity, Clark constructed a photographic essay titled The Perfect Childhood that examined the effect of media in youth culture. His photographs are part of collections at several art museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1993, Clark directed Chris Isaaks music video Solitary Man and this experience developed into an interest in film direction. Clark continued directing, filming a handful of independent feature films in the several years after this. In 2002, Clark spent several hours in a cell after punching and trying to strangle Hamish McAlpine, the head of Metro Tartan. According to McAlpine, who was left with a nose, the incident arose from an argument about Israel and the Middle East. In a 2016 interview, Clark discussed his struggle with drug abuse. Clark stated that his films were made in periods of complete sobriety and he confessed that the only exception made to his practice of abstinence while filming was Marfa Girl 2. Clark explained that filming that movie he used opiates for pain due to double knee replacement surgery. Clarks films often deal with seemingly lurid material but are told in a straightforward manner, directors such as Gus Van Sant and Martin Scorsese have stated that they were influenced by Clarks early photography, according to Peter Biskinds book Down and Dirty Pictures
