Mark Allen (pictured in 2015) was the only debutant to win his first-round match, a 10–7 defeat of the 1997 champion and third seed Ken Doherty.
The 1991 champion John Parrott (pictured in 2008) was defeated 8–13 by Shaun Murphy in the second round and never played at the final stages of the World Snooker Championship again.
Stephen Maguire (pictured in 2012), playing Anthony Hamilton in his first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of the World Championship, produced four century breaks for a 13–7 win.
