Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was an American actress and model. Famous for playing comic dumb blonde characters, she one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s. Although she was an actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. She continues to be considered a popular culture icon. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes, while working in a factory in 1944 as part of the war effort, she was introduced to a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and began a successful pin-up modeling career. The work led to short-lived film contracts with Twentieth Century-Fox and Columbia Pictures, after a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in 1951. Over the next two years, she became an actress with roles in several comedies, including As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business. Monroe faced a scandal when it was revealed that she had posed for photos before becoming a star, but rather than damaging her career. Although she played a significant role in the creation and management of her public image throughout her career, she was disappointed at being typecast and underpaid by the studio. She was briefly suspended in early 1954 for refusing a film project, when the studio was still reluctant to change her contract, Monroe founded a film production company in late 1954, she named it Marilyn Monroe Productions. She dedicated 1955 to building her company and began studying acting at the Actors Studio. In late 1955, Fox awarded her a new contract, which gave her more control and a larger salary. After a critically acclaimed performance in Bus Stop and acting in the first independent production of MMP, The Prince and her last completed film was the drama The Misfits. Monroes troubled private life received much attention and she struggled with substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. She had two highly publicized marriages, to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, both of which ended in divorce and she died at the age of 36 on August 5,1962, from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles. Although Monroes death was ruled a suicide, several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death. Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson at the Los Angeles County Hospital on June 1,1926, Gladys, the daughter of two poor Midwestern migrants to California, was a flapper and worked as a film negative cutter at Consolidated Film Industries. Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom is a 2012 American coming-of-age film directed by Wes Anderson, written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, and described as an eccentric, pubescent love story. It features newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward in the main roles, filming took place in Rhode Island from April to June 2011. Worldwide rights to the independently produced film were acquired by Focus Features, while preparing the script for Moonrise Kingdom, director Wes Anderson viewed films about young love for inspiration, such as Black Jack, Small Change, A Little Romance, and Melody. The film received acclaim, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In September 1965, on the New England island called New Penzance, 12-year-old orphan Sam Shakusky is attending Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout summer camp led by Scoutmaster Randy Ward. Suzy Bishop, also 12, lives on the island with her parents, Walt and Laura, both attorneys, and her three younger brothers in a house called Summers End. Sam and Suzy, both introverted, intelligent and mature for their age, met in the summer of 1964 during a performance of Noyes Fludde and have been pen pals since then. Their relationship having become romantic over the course of their correspondence, they have made a pact to reunite. Sam brings camping equipment, and Suzy brings her binoculars, six books, her kitten and they hike, camp, and fish together in the wilderness with the goal of reaching a secluded cove on the island. Meanwhile, the Khaki Scouts have become aware of Sams absence, Scoutmaster Ward tells the Khaki Scouts to use their skills to create a search party and find Sam. The Scouts flee and Sam and Suzy hike to the cove which they name Moonrise Kingdom and they set up camp and go swimming. Later, while drying off, they begin dancing to Françoise Hardy in their underwear, as the romantic tension between them grows, they kiss repeatedly. Suzys parents, Scoutmaster Ward, the Scouts from Camp Ivanhoe, Suzys parents take her home and when Sharp contacts the foster parents he is told that they no longer wish to house Sam. The Camp Ivanhoe Scouts have a change of heart and decide to help the couple, together, they paddle to a neighboring St. Jack Wood Island to seek out the help of Cousin Ben, an older relative of one of the Scouts. Ben works at Fort Lebanon, a larger Khaki Scout summer camp located on St. Jack Wood Island and run by Commander Pierce, who is Wards boss. Sam and Suzy never make it onto the boat, and instead are pursued by Suzys parents, Captain Sharp, Social Services. The steeple is destroyed by lightning, but everyone survives, during the storm, Sharp decides to become Sams legal guardian, thus saving Sam from the orphanage, as well as allowing him to remain on New Penzance Island and maintain contact with Suzy. Cannes is a city located on the French Riviera. It is a commune of France located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, and host city of the annual Cannes Film Festival, Midem, the city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels and restaurants, and for several conferences. On 3 November 2011 it also played host to the G20 organisation of industrialised nations, by the 2nd century BC, the Ligurian Oxybii established a settlement here known as Aegitna. Historians are unsure what the name means, the area was a fishing village used as a port of call between the Lérins Islands. In 69 AD, it became the scene of violent conflict between the troops of Otho and Vitellius, in the 10th century, the town was known as Canua. The name may derive from canna, a reed, Canua was probably the site of a small Ligurian port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill, suggested by Roman tombs discovered here. Le Suquet housed an 11th-century tower which overlooked swamps where the city now stands, most of the ancient activity, especially protection, was on the Lérins Islands and the history of Cannes is closely tied to the history of the islands. An attack by the Saracens in 891, who remained until the end of the 10th century, the insecurity of the Lérins islands forced the monks to settle on the mainland, at the Suquet. Construction of a castle in 1035 fortified the city by then known as Cannes, one took a century to build. Around 1530, Cannes detached from the monks who had controlled the city for hundreds of years, during the 18th century, both the Spanish and British tried to gain control of the Lérins Islands but were chased away by the French. The islands were controlled by many, such as Jean-Honoré Alziary. They had many different purposes, at the end of the 19th century, henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux bought land at the Croix des Gardes and constructed the villa Eleonore-Louise. His work to improve living conditions attracted the English aristocracy, who built winter residences. At the end of the 19th century, several railways were completed, in Cannes, projects such as the Boulevard Carnot and the rue dAntibes were carried out. After the closure of the Casino des Fleurs, an establishment was built for the rich winter clientele. This casino was demolished and replaced by the new Palace in 1979, in the 20th century, new luxury hotels such as the Carlton, Majestic, Martinez, and JW Marriott Cannes were built. The city was modernised with a centre, a post office. The Palme dOr is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1955 by the organising committee, from 1939 to 1954, the highest prize was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. In 1964, it was replaced again by the Grand Prix du Festival before being reintroduced in 1974 as the Palme dOr again. In 1954, the Jury of the Festival de Cannes suggested giving an award titled the Grand Prix of the International Film Festival with a new design each year from a contemporary artist. At the end of 1954, the Festivals Board of Directors invited several jewellers to submit designs for a palm, in tribute to the coat of arms of the City of Cannes. The original design by the jeweller Lucienne Lazon had the lower extremity of the stalk forming a heart. In 1955, the first Palme dOr was awarded to Delbert Mann for Marty, and it remained the highest award until 1964, as of 2015, Jane Campion is the only female director to have won the Palme dOr, for The Piano. These choices were due to a Cannes policy that forbids the Palme dOr-winning film from receiving any additional awards, according to Spielberg, Had the casting been 3% wrong, it wouldnt have worked like it did for us. Since its reintroduction, the prize has been redesigned several times, at the beginning of the 1980s, the rounded shape of the pedestal, bearing the palm, gradually transformed to become pyramidal in 1984. A single piece of cut crystal forms a cushion for the 24-carat gold palm, the winner of the 2014 Palme dOr, Winter Sleep—a Turkish film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan—occurred during the same year as the 100th anniversary of Turkish cinema. Note, The Palme dOr for Union Pacific was awarded in retrospect at the 2002 festival, the festivals debut was to take place in 1939, but it was cancelled due to World War II. Amour is a 2012 French-language romantic drama film written and directed by the Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva and Isabelle Huppert. The narrative focuses on a couple, Anne and Georges. Anne suffers a stroke which paralyses her on the side of her body. The film is a co-production among the French, German, and Austrian companies Les Films du Losange, X-Filme Creative Pool, Amour was screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme dOr. At the age of 85, Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role, at the 25th European Film Awards, Amour was nominated in six categories, winning in four, including Best Film and Best Director. At the 47th National Society of Film Critics Awards it won the awards for Best Film, Best Director, at the 66th British Academy Film Awards it was nominated in four categories, winning for Best Leading Actress and Best Film Not in the English Language. Emmanuelle Riva became the oldest person to win a BAFTA, at the 38th César Awards it was nominated in ten categories, winning in five, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. They return home to find someone has unsuccessfully tried to break into their apartment. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, Anne silently suffers a stroke and she sits in a catatonic state, not responding to Georges. She comes around as Georges is about to get help, Georges thinks she was playing a prank on him. Anne is unable to pour herself a drink, Anne undergoes surgery on a blocked carotid artery, but the surgery goes wrong, leaving her paralyzed on her right side and confined to a wheelchair. She makes Georges promise not to send her back to the hospital or into a nursing home, Georges becomes Annes dutiful, though slightly irritated, caretaker. One day, Anne tells Georges that she doesnt want to go on living, however, she soon suffers a second stroke that leaves her demented and incapable of coherent speech. Georges continues to look after Anne, despite the strain it puts on him, Georges begins employing a nurse three days a week. Their daughter, Eva, wants her mother to go into care and he employs a second nurse, but fires her after he discovers she is mistreating his wife. One day, Georges sits next to Annes bedside and tells her a story of his childhood, as he reaches the storys conclusion, he picks up a pillow and smothers her. Georges returns home with bundles of flowers in his hands, which he proceeds to wash and he picks out a dress from Annes wardrobe and writes a long letter. He tapes the bedroom door shut and catches a pigeon which has flown in from the window, in the letter, Georges explains that he has released the pigeon

Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. On 1 July 2014, co-founder and former head of French pay-TV operator Canal+ Pierre Lescure took over as President of the festival, the Board of Directors also appointed Gilles Jacob as Honorary President of the festival. The 2016 Cannes Film Festival took place between 11 and 22 May 2016, australian film director George Miller was the President of the Jury. I, Daniel Blake, directed by British director Ken Loach, in 2017, The Festival de Cannes will celebrate its 70th anniversary edition from May 17 to 28. In 1947, the festival was held as the Festival du film de Cannes, at that time the principle of equality was introduced, with a jury made up of only one representative per country. The festival is now held at the Palais des Festivals, expressly constructed for the occasion, although for its 1949 inaugural the roof was unfinished, the festival was not held in 1948 and 1950 on account of budgetary problems. Although its origins may be attributed in part to the French desire to compete with Autumns Venice Film Festival, in 1955, the Palme dOr was created, replacing the Grand Prix du Festival which had been given until that year. In 1957, Dolores del Rio was the first female member of the jury as a Sélection officielle – Member, in 1959, the Marché du Film was founded, giving the festival a commercial character and facilitating exchanges between sellers and buyers in the film industry. Today it has become the first international platform for film commerce, in 1962, the International Critics Week was born, created by the French Union of Film Critics as the first parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival. Its goal was to showcase first and second works by directors all over the world. In 1965, an hommage was paid to Jean Cocteau after his death, the next year, Olivia de Havilland was named the first female president of the festival. The 1968 festival was halted on 19 May, some directors, such as Carlos Saura and Miloš Forman, had withdrawn their films from the competition. The filmmakers achieved the reinstatement of the President, and they founded the Film Directors Society that same year, during the 1970s, important changes occurred in the Festival. In 1972, Robert Favre Le Bret was named the new President and he immediately introduced an important change in the selection of the participating films. Until that date, the different countries chose which films would represent them in the festival, Bessy created one committee to select French films, and another for foreign films. In 1978, Gilles Jacob assumed the President position, introducing the Caméra dOr award, in 1983, a new, much bigger Palais des Festivals et des Congrès was built to host the Festival. It was nicknamed The Bunker and provoked many reactions against it, in 1984, Pierre Viot replaced Robert Favre Le Bret as President of the Festival. Giovanni Nanni Moretti is an Italian film director, producer, screenwriter and actor. The Palme dOr winner in 2001, in 2012 he was the President of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, Moretti was born in Bruneck, South Tyrol, Italy, to Roman parents who were both teachers. His father was the late epigraphist Luigi Moretti, an influential Greek teacher at Sapienza University of Rome, while growing up he discovered his two passions, the cinema and water polo. Having finished his studies he pursued a career as a producer and his brother is the renowned literary scholar Franco Moretti. In 1976, Giovannis first feature film Io sono un autarchico was released, in 1978 he produced the movie Ecce Bombo, which tells the story of a student having problems with his entourage. It was screened at the Cannes Festival, Sogni doro won the Silver Lion at the 38th Venice International Film Festival. La messa è finita won the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize at the 36th Berlin International Film Festival and he may be best known for his films Caro diario and La stanza del figlio, the latter of which won the Palme dOr at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. Moretti has used certain actors several times in his films, generally playing minor roles and his father Luigi appears in 6 films, Dario Cantarelli and Mauro Fabretti in 5, Antonio Petrocelli in 4. Actors he has used in major roles include Silvio Orlando, who appears in 5 films and Laura Morante. Having played waterpolo in the B division of the Italian championship and his other work has not been widely seen outside Europe, but within his country Moretti is known as a maker of wryly humorous and eccentric films, usually starring himself. His most recent role was in the film Mia Madre Moretti is also an outspoken political leftist, Il caimano is in part about Berlusconis controversies, in one of the three portraits of the Italian prime minister Moretti himself plays Berlusconi. Aprile also deals with Italys political situation and Morettis views on it and his 2011 film We Have a Pope screened In Competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. He lives in Rome, having been resident since birth, where he is co-owner of a movie theater. The short film, Il Giorno della prima di Close Up, shows Moretti at his theatre attempting to encourage patrons to attend the day of Abbas Kiarostamis film. Timothy Simon Tim Roth is an English actor and director. He made his role in the 1982 television film Made in Britain. He garnered critical acclaim for his role as Myron in the 1984 film The Hit, Roth gained more attention for his performances in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Vincent & Theo and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. Wesley Wales Wes Anderson is an American film director, film producer, screenwriter, and actor. His films are known for their visual and narrative style. He received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014 and he also received the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2015. His films are produced under his American Empirical Pictures banner, Anderson is regarded by many as a modern-day example of the auteur. Wesley Wales Anderson was born on May 1,1969, in Houston, Texas, the son of Texas Ann, a realtor and archaeologist, and Melver Leonard Anderson and he is the second of three boys, his parents divorced when he was eight. His elder brother, Mel, is a physician, and his brother, Eric Chase Anderson, is a writer and artist whose paintings. Anderson is of Swedish and Norwegian ancestry and he graduated from St. Johns School in Houston in 1987, which he later used as a prominent location throughout Rushmore. As a child, Anderson made silent films on his fathers Super 8 camera, starring his brothers and friends, Anderson attended college while working part-time as a cinema projectionist. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in philosophy in 1990, Andersons first film was Bottle Rocket, based on a short film that he made with Luke and Owen Wilson. It was a crime caper about a group of young Texans aspiring to achieve major heists and it was well reviewed but performed poorly at the box office. Andersons next film was Rushmore, a comedy about a high school students crush on an elementary school teacher starring Bill Murray. Murray has since appeared in every Anderson film to date, in 2000, filmmaker Martin Scorsese praised Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. The Royal Tenenbaums was Andersons next comedy-drama film, about a successful artistic New York City family and it represented his greatest success until Moonrise Kingdom in 2012, earning more than $50 million in domestic box office receipts. The Royal Tenenbaums was nominated for an Academy Award and ranked by an Empire poll as the 159th greatest film ever made, Andersons next feature was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou about a Jacques Cousteau-esque documentary filmmaker played by Bill Murray. It serves as a example of Andersons style, but its critical reception was less favorable than his previous films. They offered Anderson their soundtrack services for his The Darjeeling Limited, the Darjeeling Limited was about three emotionally distant brothers traveling together on a train in India. It reflected the dramatic tone of The Royal Tenenbaums but faced criticisms similar to The Life Aquatic. Claude Miller was a French film director, producer and screenwriter. Claude Miller was born to a Jewish family, a student at Paris IDHEC film school from 1962 through 1963, Miller had his first practical cinematic experience while he was in uniform, serving with the Service Cinéma de lArmée. From 1965 until 1974, Miller worked in assistant and supervisory capacities for many of Frances major directors, including Robert Bresson, Miller received César nominations for best director and writing for this film. His subsequent films can also be perceived as homages to Truffaut, the following year he made Dites-lui que je laime, for which he received a second César nomination for Best Director. He won a César Award for Best Writing in 1981 for Garde à vue, in 1983 he directed Mortelle randonnée. The latter film was an international success, and solidified Millers status as one of Frances major film-makers. On French television, Miller directed dozens of commercials and the six-part miniseries Traits de Mémoire, after a four-year absence, Claude Miller returned to active filmmaking with The Accompanist and The Smile. He had to wait until 1998 for his major success, La Classe de Neige, the chilling story of a lonely boy on a school skiing holiday. Michael Haneke is an Austrian film director and screenwriter best known for films such as Funny Games, Caché, The White Ribbon and Amour. His work often examines social issues, and depicts the feelings of estrangement experienced by individuals in modern society, Haneke has worked in television‚ theatre and cinema. Besides working as a filmmaker, Haneke also teaches film direction at the Film Academy Vienna. At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, his film The White Ribbon won the Palme dOr, in 2012, his film Amour premiered and competed at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and it won in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Haneke has made films in French, German and in English, in 2013 Haneke won the Prince of Asturias Award for the arts. Haneke was born in Munich, Germany, the son of the German actor and director Fritz Haneke and his stepfather, the composer Alexander Steinbrecher, had later married the mother of actor Christoph Waltz. After graduating, he became a critic and from 1967 to 1970 he worked as editor. He made his debut as a director in 1974. Hanekes feature film debut was 1989s The Seventh Continent, which served to trace out the violent, three years later, the controversial Bennys Video put Hanekes name on the map. Haneke achieved great success in 2001 with the critically successful French film The Piano Teacher and it won the prestigious Grand Prize at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and also won its stars, Benoît Magimel and Isabelle Huppert, the Best Actor and Actress awards. He has worked with Juliette Binoche, after she expressed interest in working with him, Haneke frequently worked with real-life couple Ulrich Mühe and Susanne Lothar – thrice each. His film, The White Ribbon, premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, in 2012, his film Amour also won the Palme dOr. Haneke says that films should offer more space for imagination and self-reflection. Films that have too much detail and moral clarity, Haneke says, are used for consumption by their viewers. It is often difficult for people to ascertain Hanekes philosophy and the messages he wishes to illustrate in his works. The White Ribbon is a 2009 black-and-white German-language drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke. Das weiße Band, Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte darkly depicts society and family in a northern German village just before World War I and, whether it’s religious or political terrorism, it’s the same thing. The film also received two nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2009, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, the memories of an unnamed elderly tailor form a parable from the distant year he worked as a village schoolteacher and met his fiancée Eva, a nanny. The puritanical pastor leads confirmation classes and gives his pubescent children a guilty conscience over apparently small transgressions and he has them wear white ribbons as a reminder of the innocence and purity from which they have strayed. When his son confesses to impure touching, the pastor has the boy’s hands tied to his bed each night. The doctor, a widower, treats the village children kindly, the baron, who is the lord of the manor, underwrites harvest festivities for the villagers, many of them his farm workers. A wire is stretched between two trees causing the doctor a terrible fall from his horse, the farmers wife dies at the sawmill when rotten floorboards give way, her grieving husband later hangs himself. The baron’s young son Sigi goes missing on the day of the harvest festival and is found the following morning in the sawmill, bound, a retarded boy goes missing and and is found nearly blinded. A barn at the manor burns down, the baroness tells her husband that she is in love with another man. The steward at the barons estate thrashes his son for stealing a flute from Sigi. The midwife urgently commandeers a bicycle from the schoolteacher to go to the police in town and she and her son are not seen again, and the doctor and his family have also suddenly disappeared, leaving a note on the door indicating his practice is closed. Offended, the pastor threatens to report the schoolteacher to the authorities if he repeats his accusations, the film ends at the time of the declaration of war on Serbia by Austria–Hungary, with the conclusion occuring in church on the day of a visit from the narrators prospective father-in-law. Disquiet remains in the village, with no explanation of the violent events, the narrator left Eichwald, never to return. Michael Haneke has said the project was in development for more than ten years, eventually revived as a feature film, the production was led by the Austrian company Wega Film. It was also co-produced by X Filme, Les Films Du Losange, the film received financial support from the Austrian Film Institute, various local funds in Germany, the French CNC and the Council of Europes film fund Eurimages. It had a budget of around 12 million Euro. More than 7,000 children were interviewed during the casting period. Reality is a 2012 Italian drama film directed by Matteo Garrone and stars Aniello Arena, Loredana Simioli, and Claudia Gerini. The narrative is set in the world of reality television, and follows a Neapolitan fishmonger who participates in Grande Fratello, the film won the Grand Prix award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Grande Fratello is a reality television program about boys who live in a house with their day to day actions filmed. Luciano, a young fishmonger married with children who lives in Naples, is attracted to this show that is famous in Italy, the program is superficial and silly but well-liked by the public, especially Luciano, the protagonist of the film. After a festive and vulgar marriage between relatives, Luciano returns to his life selling fish in the city. Lucianos friends, who are ignorant and dishonest, decide to persuade Luciano to audition for a part as one of the boys in Big Brother, naively, Luciano is convinced and decides to go to Cinecittà in Rome to audition. At the audition the committee finds Luciano pleasant, though insignificant, however, when Luciano returns to his neighborhood in Naples, he begins going crazy while waiting to hear from the assistant director. He believes he is being watched by cameras from the television program he loves so much and is really happy about them. His wife and other relatives despair and believe that Luciano is out of his mind and his wife is especially worried and bursts into tears when she meets a friend of Luciano. She asks him why her husband has become so strange and, although he feels a deep sorrow for Lucianos tearful wife, Luciano continues to get worse and is seen laughing for no reason. Finally, he makes a pilgrimage to Rome, and becomes obsessed with studying for his part in Big Brother, the screenplay for Reality is based on a true story. Garrone describes it as a simple, working-class tale, not intended as a political treatise, however, it did develop into a darker film than originally planned, and Garrone has expressed doubt as to whether the finished version can be described as a comedy. The film was produced by Fandango and the directors company Archimede and it received co-production support from Rai Cinema and Frances Le Pacte. It also received backing from Garance Capital. The 11-week recording began on 5 May 2011, filming took place in Naples and Rome. The film had the production title Big House, actor Aniello Arena, who plays the protagonist, is a convicted former member of the Camorra who was discovered by director Garrone at a theater play staged by the inmates of the Volterra prison. He has served life in prison for murder since 1991, Garrone sought special permission for him to appear in Gomorrah and was denied, but kept him in mind and insisted for this film. Kenneth Charles Ken Loach is an English director of television and independent film. He is known for his socially critical directing style and for his socialist ideals, Loachs film Kes was voted the seventh greatest British film of the 20th century in a poll by the British Film Institute. Two of his films, The Wind That Shakes the Barley and I, Daniel Blake received the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival, Loach was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, the son of Vivien and John Loach. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School and went on to law at St Peters College. Loachs ten contributions to the BBCs Wednesday Play anthology series include the docudramas Up the Junction, Cathy Come Home and they portray working-class people in conflict with the authorities above them. Three of his plays are believed to be lost films. His 1965 play Three Clear Sundays dealt with capital punishment, and was broadcast at a time when the debate was at a height in the United Kingdom, in Two Minds, written by David Mercer, concerns a young schizophrenic womans experiences of the mental health system. Tony Garnett began to work as his producer in this period, during this period, he also directed the absurdist comedy The End of Arthurs Marriage, about which he later said that he was the wrong man for the job. Coinciding with his work for The Wednesday Play, Loach began to feature films for the cinema, with Poor Cow. The latter recounts the story of a boy and his kestrel. The British Film Institute named it No 7 in its list of best British films of the twentieth century, during the 1970s and 1980s, Loachs films were less successful, often suffering from poor distribution, lack of interest and political censorship. His documentary The Save the Children Fund Film was commissioned by the charity and it was only screened publicly for the first time on 1 September 2011, at the BFI Southbank. At the end of the 1980s, he directed some television advertisements for Tennents Lager to earn money, frank Chapple, leader of the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union, walked out of the interview and made a complaint to the Independent Broadcasting Authority. A separate complaint was made by Terry Duffy of the Amalgamated Engineering, the series was due to be broadcast during the Trade Union Congress conference in 1983, but Channel 4 decided against broadcasting the series following the complaints. The film was transmitted on Channel 4, but only after it won a prize at an Italian film festival. Three weeks after the end of the strike, the film End of the Battle, was broadcast by Channel 4 in its Diverse Strands series. This film argued that the Conservative Party had planned the destruction of the National Union of Mineworkers political power from the late 1970s. The play was due to run at the Royal Court Theatre in 1987 and he directed the Courtroom Drama reconstructions in the docu-film McLibel, concerning the longest libel trial in English history

The Angels Share is a Scottish comedy-drama film directed by Ken Loach, starring Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, William Ruane, Gary Maitland, Jasmin Riggins, and Siobhan Reilly. It tells the story of a young Glaswegian father who narrowly avoids a prison sentence and he is determined to turn over a new leaf and when he and his friends from the same community payback group visit a whisky distillery, a route to a new life becomes apparent. The title is from the share, a term for the portion of a whiskys volume that is lost to evaporation during aging in oak barrels. In the opening scenes, the protagonists are sentenced to hours of community payback, during his first community payback session, Robbie, under the guidance of Harry, is interrupted and taken to the hospital by Harry as his girlfriend, Leonie, has gone into labour. At the hospital, Robbie is assaulted by two of his girlfriends uncles and her dad before he can see her, Harry takes Robbie back to his house to clean him up, at which point Leonie calls to announce Robbies son, Luke, has been born. Harry insists that he and Robbie celebrate, and brings out a vintage whisky, with Leonies encouragement, Robbie agrees to meet with a victim of his former violent crimes, Anthony, who recollects the attack in front of both his family and Leonie. Afterwards, Leonie makes clear that she not want her son to grow up around violence. Harry takes the group to a distillery as a reward for their good behaviour, afterwards, the tour guide gives them each a dram of whisky and asks them to smell it, and Robbie is complimented on his ability to identify flavours. However, Robbie is still being pursued by his old enemy and he is about to undergo a beating by Clancy and his followers when he is unexpectedly rescued by Leonies father. Robbie pleads to be one last chance but the older man tells him that its too late. Leonies father tells him that the way for him to escape the cycle is to leave Glasgow altogether and go to London. He offers Robbie £5,000 to sweeten the deal and leaves Robbie to think it over, at the next community service session, Harry approaches Robbie and asks if hed like to come to a whisky tasting session in Edinburgh. Robbie and Leonie view a flat which they could rent for six months while the owner is away, Robbie seems touched but it is then revealed they have been followed by one of Clancys men and Clancy will know where they are going to live. Robbie, realising that he cant continue living under threat of assault on himself and his family, at the auction, the group see Thaddeus outbid by an American, who tastes the cask, and is apparently happy with the slightly diluted blend. Afterwards, Robbie approaches Thaddeus and negotiates a sale of three bottles for £200,000, and a real job. They plan to make the exchange in Glasgow, and so begin the trek home, Robbie is furious, but goes ahead with meeting Thaddeus, and negotiates a sale for £100,000 and a permanent job far away from Glasgow. Afterwards, Robbie reveals to his friends that he didnt sell two bottles, but one and he smells the bottle and rejoices at the Malt Mill inside. In the final scene, we see Robbie and Leonie leave for Stirling in an immaculate old Volkswagen Type 2, after they leave, the rest of the group resolve to go get wasted

The Jury Prize is an award presented at the Cannes Film Festival, chosen by the Jury from the official section of movies at the festival. Initially the award signified the second best film in competition, though now it is now considered the third-most prestigious prize at the festival, after the Palme dOr. From 1951 until 1966 the name Special Jury Prize was used for the second-most important award of the festival, in 1967 the second place was renamed Grand Prize of the Jury, and the Special Jury Prize title was withdrawn. Then, in 1969, the Jury Prize was created separately from the Grand Prize, the Special Jury Prize reappeared twice in the 1990s, and one International Jury Prize was awarded in 1946. Hiam Abbass, also Hiyam Abbas, is a Palestinian actress and film director Hiam Abbass was born into a Muslim family in Nazareth, Israel. She was raised in the Arab village of Deir Hanna, during the filming of the Steven Spielberg film Munich, Abbass lived in a hotel with the Arab and Israeli actors for three months. During that time, they had many discussions that helped both sides grow closer. In an interview in 2006, Abbass said, I still remember how difficult it was for the Arab actors to manhandle the Israeli actors in the first scene where the Israeli national team is taken hostage. In Spielbergs film, depicting the response to the Munich Massacre, she served as a dialect. She directed two films, Le Pain, and La Danse éternelle. She portrays humanitarian Hind al-Husseini in Julian Schnabels film Miral, based on the life of Husseini, in 2002, she appeared in Satin Rouge by Raja Amari, a film about the self-discovery of a middle aged Tunisian widow. She also a role in The Syrian Bride, about a Druze woman eager to break down barriers. Abbass appeared in the French films Le sac de farine and Le temps de la balle, in 2008, she played the mother of an illegal Syrian immigrant in Tom McCarthys movie The Visitor, and the mother of an Iraqi soldier in Abbas Fahdels film Dawn of the World. Also in 2008, she played the role in Israeli director Eran Rikliss film Lemon Tree. For this role, she won Best Performance by an Actress at the 2008 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, there he will see what life really is. Abbass also appears in A Bottle in the Gaza Sea, a French-Québéecois-Israeli film produced by Thierry Binisti and it is based upon the young adult novel Une bouteille dans la mer de Gaza by Valérie Zenatti. She plays the role of Naïms mother, in 2012, she was named as a member of the Jury for the Main Competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Andrea Arnold

Andrea Arnold, OBE is an English filmmaker and former actress. Most recently, she directed three episodes of the Emmy-winning series Transparent, Arnold was born in Erith Kent, the eldest of four children. She was born when her mother was only 16 years old and her father was 17 and her mother had to bring up all four children alone, which is reminiscent of Arnolds own directorial debuted short, Wasp. When people are asked if the story is in any way biographical, Arnold replies I grew up in a working class family, as a young girl, she was writing dark stories about human experience. All the other kids would just bung on some pop music, I remember the examiners sitting there looking at me, perplexed. Arnold left high school when she was 16, when she was drawn to becoming an actress, when Arnold was 18 years old she began working as a host and actress for a childrens TV show called No.73. She worked in TV for the next 10 years, while writing on the side. Arnold realised she could turn her stories into films, so she studied at the American Film Institute of Los Angeles where she gained experience in the film industry, after finishing school and returning to Britain she had her daughter, Coral and began making short films for TV. After leaving school in the late 1970s, Arnold got her first TV jobs as a dancer on shows that included Top of the Pops. She first came to prominence as an actress and television presenter alongside Sandi Toksvig, Nick Staverson and Neil Buchanan in the 1980s childrens television show No.73. In addition to parts, the show had the usual mix of music. After a couple of years of experience in front of the camera, Arnold realised, Television was great fun and I went along for the ride, but I never felt that comfortable in front of the camera. In 1988 No.73 had morphed into 7T3, with the set being moved from the Maidstone house to that of a theme park. This revamp would only last the season, but Arnold would be seen for two years in the same timeslot as part of the Motormouth presenting team. In 1990 she presented and wrote for the environmental awareness show for teens and this also featured Benjamin Zephaniah and gave exposure to The Yes/No People of Stomp fame. After retiring from her career as a presenter, Arnold studied directing at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles. Her early short films included Milk and Dog and she won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Wasp, in 2004. She was named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow, also in 2003, she directed an episode of the Channel 4 series Coming Up titled Bed Bugs, though she is sometimes erroneously credited as Andrew Arnold for the work

Jean-Paul Gaultier is a French haute couture and prêt-à-porter fashion designer. Gaultier was the director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010. Jean-Paul Gaultier co-presented the popular television series Eurotrash with Antoine de Caunes, Gaultier grew up in the suburb of Paris. His mother was a clerk and his father an accountant and it was his maternal grandmother, Marie Garrabe, who introduced him to the world of fashion. He never received training as a designer. Instead, he started sending sketches to famous couture stylists at an early age, Pierre Cardin was impressed by his talent and hired him as an assistant in 1970. Afterwards he worked with Jacques Esterel in 1971 and Jean Patou later that year and his first individual collection was released in 1976, and his characteristic irreverent style dating from 1981 has led to his being known as the enfant terrible of French fashion. In 1985, he introduced man-skirts and promoted their use, especially kilts, in mens wardrobe, Gaultier has also worked in close collaboration with Wolford Hosiery. This earned him criticism and enormous popularity. At the end of the 1980s, Gaultier suffered some losses, including his boyfriend and business partner Francis Menuge. In 1988 Gaultier released a single titled How To Do That on Fontana records from which came one of the first ever single title remix albums Aow Tou Dou Zat on Mercury records. The album includes mixes by Norman Cook, J. J. Jeczalik, George Shilling, Mark Saunders, Latin Rascals, David Dorrell, Tim Atkins, Carl Atkins, co-written & produced by Tony Mansfield, video directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. The album also featured a collaboration with accordion player Yvette Horner, starting in 1993, he co-hosted the Channel 4s program Eurotrash with Antoine de Caunes. Gaultier hosted the show until 1997, Gaultier was the creative director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010, where he succeeded Martin Margiela. He also designed furniture for the French furniture brand Roche Bobois. The exhibition in Paris, which took place from April to August 2015, was the subject of a documentary called Jean Paul Gaultier at the Grand Palais aired exclusively on Eurochannel. The Granny Gray hair color trend is attributed to Gualtier, whose Autumn/Winter 2011 show featured models in grey Beehives, in Spring 2015, his catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week featuring silver haired models again, as did the shows of other fashion designers, Chanel and Gareth Pugh. Alexander Payne is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer, known for the films Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska. His films are noted for their humor and satirical depictions of contemporary American society. Payne is a winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Payne was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Peggy and George Payne, Payne is the youngest of three sons and grew up in what is now known as the Dundee-Happy Hollow Historic District, the same neighborhood as billionaire Warren Buffett. His father is of Greek and German descent, and his mother is of Greek ancestry and his paternal grandfather, Nicholas Nick Payne, anglicized the last name from Papadopoulos. His family comes from three areas in Greece, the island of Syros, Livadia, and Aegio, Paynes family was part of the fabric of Omaha, which he references as part of his upbringing. His grandfather was a founder of The Virginia Cafe, with Paynes father taking over the restaurant, Payne went there regularly as a child. The restaurant was destroyed in a fire in 1969, the W. Dale Clark Library is now located on the site, Paynes paternal grandmother, Clara Payne, was from a German Nebraska family from Lincoln, Nebraska. In Omaha, Payne attended Brownell-Talbot School, Dundee Elementary School and he graduated from Creighton Prep for high school in 1979. At Prep, Payne wrote a column for his high school newspaper and was the editor of the high school yearbook. Payne then attended Stanford University, where he majored in Spanish. Payne got his MFA in 1990 from the UCLA Film School, in the 1960s, Paynes father received a Super 8mm projector from Kraft Foods as a loyalty reward, and eventually passed it on to his son when Alexander was about 14 years old. The ensuing screenplay, which was turned down, would ultimately become About Schmidt and he says that he cleared about $60,000, which was enough to fund his simple lifestyle at the time for about five years. Payne sees his talent as being one of learned economy and he refers to the essay written by Tennessee Williams on The Catastrophe of Success. Payne worked in various capacities on films and television before he co-wrote and directed his first full-length film, Payne was nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay for Election. Raoul Peck is a Haitian filmmaker, of both documentary and feature films, and a political activist. From March 1996 to September 1997, he was Haitis Minister of Culture and his film I Am Not Your Negro about the life of James Baldwin was nominated for an Oscar in January 2017. Peck was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at the age of eight, Peck and his family fled the Duvalier dictatorship and joined his father in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. His mother, Giselle, would serve as aide and secretary to mayors of Kinshasa for many years, the family resided in DRC for the next 24 years. Peck attended schools in the DRC, in the United States and he spent a year as a New York City taxi driver and worked as a journalist and photographer before earning a film degree from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin in West Berlin. In 1986 Peck created the production company Velvet Film in Germany. Peck initially developed short experimental works and socio-political documentaries, before moving on to feature films and his feature L’Homme sur les quais was the first Haitian film to be released in theatres in the United States. It was also selected for competition at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and he detailed his experiences in this position in a book, Monsieur le Ministre… jusquau bout de la patience. Prime Minister Smarth wrote an afterword for the book, and Russell Banks wrote the preface to the first edition, on the books re-release in 2015, Radio Metropole Haïti reviewed it as a portrait of a formidable democratic movement that profoundly changed the country. Peck received international attention for Lumumba, his 2000 fiction feature film about Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, a book of screenplays and images from four of Pecks major features and documentary films, called Stolen Images, was published in February 2012 by Seven Stories Press. He is president of La Fémis, the French state film school, in 2012, he was named as a member of the Jury for the Main Competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. He won the Best Documentary prize at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival in 2013 for Fatal Assistance, the Belgian segment of the shoot for his upcoming film Le Jeune Karl Marx resumed in October 2015. The film is about the friendship between Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, authors of the Communist Manifesto, during their youth. In 2016, Pecks documentary film I Am Not Your Negro premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, shortly after, Magnolia Pictures and Amazon Studios acquired distribution rights to the film. It was released in the US for an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run on December 9,2016 and it received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature for the 89th Academy Awards but the award ultimately went to director Ezra Edelman for OJ Simpson, Made in America. I Am Not Your Negro received positive reviews from critics, on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 97% based on 78 reviews, with an average rating of 9/10. Brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne are a Belgian filmmaking duo. They write, produce and direct their films together, the Dardennes began making narrative and documentary films in the late 1970s. They came to attention in the mid-1990s with La Promesse. They won their first major international film prize when Rosetta won the Palme dOr at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival, in 2002, Olivier Gourmet won Best Actor at Cannes for the Dardennes Le Fils. In 2005, they won the Palme dOr a second time for their film L’Enfant, putting them in a club, at the time. Their film, Le Silence de Lorna, won Best Screenplay at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was released in Europe in the fall. Their film The Kid with a Bike won the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, received one Golden Globe nomination, Jean-Pierre was the jury president for the Cinéfoundation and Short Films sections of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. In 2015, their film Deux jours, une nuit received nine Magritte Award nominations, creators of intensely naturalistic films about working class life in Belgium, brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne have created a notable body of work since 1996. With La Promesse, Rosetta, Le Fils, and LEnfant, the Dardennes’ films show young people at the fringes of society – immigrants, the unemployed, the inhabitants of shelters. Both Rosetta and LEnfant were awarded the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival, the Dardennes were born and raised in Seraing in Liege, in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. Jean-Pierre studied drama while Luc studied philosophy, in 1975 they established Derives, the production company that produced the roughly sixty documentary films they made before branching into feature films. These films covered such topics as Polish immigration, World War II resistance and their first two feature films, however, are rarely seen today, Falsch and Je pense a vous, which Luc would later describe as an unfortunate adventure. The Dardennes had their first international success with La Promesse in 1996, with Rosetta the Dardennes turned their focus to the burdens – philosophical, spiritual, psychological – of unemployment. Rosetta was the first Belgian film ever to win the Palme dOr at Cannes, coming in ahead of films by David Lynch, Pedro Almodóvar, Takeshi Kitano, the film provided some impetus for a labor law designed to protect young workers like Rosetta shortly after the films release. ’t was pure chance, ’ Jean-Pierre insists, ‘There was already a bill going through, and the minister took advantage of our award to call it the Rosetta Law. But we never intended to get laws changed. ’ Luc adds, ‘Of course, we hope our films will speak to people, disturb them. Crimes and occupations again figure prominently in the Dardennes’ fourth film, the film earned the Dardennes the Palme dOr from Cannes, their second in seven years. The Daily Californian is an independent, student-run newspaper that serves the University of California, Berkeley campus and its surrounding community. It publishes a print edition four days a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday during the academic year, and twice a week during the summer. Established in 1871, The Daily Californian is one of the oldest newspapers on the West Coast, current circulation is about 10,000 for a campus of roughly 35,000 students. The Daily Californian became independent from UC Berkeley in 1971 after the administration fired three senior editors over an editorial that encouraged readers to take back Peoples Park. The paper licenses its name from the Regents of the University of California. On November 24,1982, three days after the November 20th Big Game, early morning readers of the Daily Cal were chagrined to find in the headline of the front page, NCAA Awards Big Game to Stanford. Hundreds of copies of the Daily Cal with this fake headline had been strewn about campus in the wee hours and this was in fact a hoax perpetrated by aggrieved Stanford fans. The Daily Californian has a history of publishing spirited editorials, in 2002, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates agreed to pay restitution after admitting to having thrown away a thousand copies of The Daily Californian after it endorsed his opponent, then-Mayor Shirley Dean. In May 2003, nearly 5,000 papers were stolen by students protesting coverage of the arrest of a Cal football player, the largest act of theft took place in November 1996 when the papers senior editorial board endorsed Proposition 209. Nearly 23,000 papers were stolen on Election Day 1996, on October 16,2006, the Daily Cal launched its first blog, The Daily Clog, a student-life blog that accumulates various tidbits about Berkeley and college life. On August 25,2008, the Daily Cal announced that it would not print a paper version of the newspaper on Wednesdays amidst a decline in advertising revenues, more than 400 former The Daily Californian staffers have joined The Daily Californian Alumni Association since its resurrection in August 1996. A unit of The Daily Californian Education Foundation, the DCAA exists to bring alumni of the newspaper together as well as to provide mentorship, the DCAA is one of the largest and most active alumni associations of any college newspaper. A chartered club of the California Alumni Association, the Daily Californian Alumni Association holds regular reunions and receptions across the country, membership is open to all former staff members of The Daily Californian or student publications office staff. Beyond the Hills is a 2012 Romanian drama film directed by Cristian Mungiu, starring Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan. The narrative follows two women at an Orthodox convent in Romania. The film premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where Mungiu won the award for Best Screenplay and it was selected as the Romanian entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, making the January shortlist. In their previous life they were roommates at a home and had shared a physical relationship. It soon becomes clear that Alina wishes for this relationship to continue, Alina falls ill and is hospitalised and Voichița begs the priest to allow her to stay along with the nuns at the convent. The priest acquiesces to Voichițas demands, on the condition that she will be responsible should anything happen and he insists that Alina remain faithful to God and undertake confession for her sins. Alina seeks to convince Voichița to break free of the Orthodox environment and come, Voichița, for her part, tries to convince Alina to take God into her heart, in the hope that this will finally give her peace. The nuns agree to care for Alina, as they can find no place for her to stay. The film production was made through the company, Mobra Films. It also received support from Belgium and France. It received €273,100 from Romanias National Centre for Cinema, filming took place from November 2011 to February 2012. The film premiered in the competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Mungiu won the award for Best Screenplay, while Cristina Flutur, the film also won the Golden Astor for Best Film at the 2012 Mar del Plata International Film Festival. But it will not pass unnoticed. Sight & Sound film magazine listed the film at #8 on its list of best films of 2012, mark Kermode named it his second best film of 2013 so far

Cristian Mungiu is a Romanian filmmaker, winner of the Palme dOr in 2007. After studying English literature at the University of Iaşi, he worked for a few years as a teacher, after that, he enrolled at the University of Film in Bucharest to study film directing. After graduating in 1998, Mungiu made several short films, in 2002, he debuted with his first feature film, Occident. Occident enjoyed critical success, winning prizes in film festivals. In 2007 Mungiu wrote and directed his feature,4 Months,3 Weeks and 2 Days. Mungiu has said that early Miloš Forman and Robert Altman are important filmmakers who influenced him and he also respects the realism of Bicycle Thieves, among other famous realistic films. Mungiu is the brother of political analyst Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, the film was also selected as the Romanian entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, making the January shortlist. In 2013 he produced the film of Nae Caranfil 6.9 on Richter In April 2013 he was selected as a member of the main competition jury at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. After Beyond the Hills Cristian Mungius new project will deal with parenting, the producer/writer/director hopes to shoot it in 2015 ideally while there are still leaves on the trees. net

It is based on the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. On 25 May 2012, the film premiered in competition for the Palme dOr at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the film was released in Canada on 8 June 2012, and began a limited release in the United States on 17 August 2012 by eOne Films. It is Cronenbergs first foray into script writing since 1999s eXistenZ, various visitors discuss the meaning of life and inconsequential trivia. The traffic jams are caused by a visit of the President of the United States and the funeral of Erics favorite musician, despite devastating currency speculation losses over the course of the day, Packer fantasizes about buying the Rothko Chapel. He meets his wife, Elise, in her taxi, for coffee, in a bookstore, Packer has sex with two other women. When after a day of poor trading he destroys a large part of his wealth, anti-capitalist activists demonstrate on the street. They wave rats and declare A spectre is haunting the world and they spray-paint Packers limo and later one subjects him to a pieing. Packer learns that an assassin is out to him. In his car, his doctor performs his daily medical checkup, Eric worries about the doctors finding that he has an asymmetrical prostate. As the currency speculation wipes out most of his fortune, Erics world begins to disintegrate, at the destination, the barber, who knew his father, cuts Erics hair on one side. The barber and limo driver discuss their respective careers driving cabs, the barber gives Eric his gun because he had thrown away the bodyguards gun. Eric follows a path of further self-destruction, visiting his potential murderer, former employee Richard Sheets a. k. a, Eric seems ready to commit suicide, but instead deliberately shoots himself in the hand. The film ends with the potential murderer holding a gun to Erics head threatening to kill him, Brancos Alfama Films is producing the film about a day in the life of a young billionaire financier who, over the course of a traumatic day, loses all his wealth. A director will be named shortly and DeLillo is on board to collaborate, on 26 July 2009, it was announced that Canadian director David Cronenberg had become involved in the project and would now bring the novel to the screen. The film was scheduled to begin filming in 2010, with Paulo Brancos Paris-based production house Alfama Films co-producing with Cronenbergs Toronto Antenna Ltd. On 3 September 2009, Paulo Branco officially confirmed to Screendaily. com that Cronenberg has now finished his screenplay and is now looking to cast the film. On 13 January 2010, it was reported that Cronenberg was still committed to the film, although a cast, Cronenberg said that everyone was happy with the script and he was very fond of the project. Principal photography took place in Toronto and was completed in July 2011, colin Farrell was initially cast in the main role but left due to scheduling difficulties with Total Recall
