St Hugh's College, Oxford

St Hughs College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. It is located on a 14. 5-acre site on St Margarets Road and it was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth as a womens college, and accepted its first male students in its centenary year in 1986. It enjoys a reputation as one of the most attractive colleges because of its extensive, in its 125th anniversary year, the college became a registered charity under the name The Principal and Fellows of St Hughs College in the University of Oxford. As of July 2013, the financial endowment was £25.7 million. St Hughs was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth to help the number of women who find the charges of the present Halls at Oxford. Using money left to her by her father, who had been Bishop of Lincoln and she named the college after one of her fathers 13th-century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220, and in whose diocese Oxford had been. The college was initially accommodated in properties in Norham Road, Norham Gardens and its first six students were Annie Moberly, Jessie Annie Emmerson, Charlotte Jourdain, Constance E. Ashburner, Wilhemina J. de Lorna Mitchell and Grace J. Parsons. Students were required to ask the Principal before accepting invitations to friends. Records show that rent was between £18 and £21 a term depending on the size of the room, with fires being charged extra. The college began to move to its present site in 1913 and this house was situated on the corner of St Margarets Road and Banbury Road, and was owned by University College. The first book was a copy of Sales Koran, which was given to the college by the then Bishop of Tokyo, the college soon took over other properties nearby. The leasehold of No.4 St Margarets Road was acquired in 1919, the leasehold of No.82 Woodstock Road was donated to the college by Dr Joan Evans in 1924 and No.89 Banbury Road was purchased from Lincoln College for £7,000 in 1927. The college obtained the freehold to the site in 1927. The freeholds of Nos. 1-4 St Margarets Road and 74-82 Woodstock Road were purchased from St Johns College in 1931 and 1932 respectively, the college received a Royal Charter in 1926. Between 1935 and 1936 No.1 St Margarets Road was demolished, brick huts were constructed in the college grounds with space for 300 beds. Between 1940 and 1945, over 13,000 servicemen and women were treated at the college, advances in medicine discovered at the hospital meant the mortality rate for brain-penetrating injuries fell from 90% to 9%. Staff and students were relocated to Holywell Manor, Savile House, in 1943 the college acquired the leasehold of No 72 Woodstock Road from Dame Gertrude Whitehead for £1,500. It was used as a club for American soldiers during the war, in 1946, it was leased to the University of Paris as Maison Française, an Anglo-American educational establishment

Royal Academy of Arts

The Royal Academy of Arts is an art institution based in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London. The Royal Academy of Arts was founded through an act of King George III on 10 December 1768 with a mission to promote the arts of design in Britain through education and exhibition. Supporters wanted to foster a national school of art and to encourage appreciation, fashionable taste in 18th-century Britain was based on continental and traditional art forms, providing contemporary British artists little opportunity to sell their works. From 1746 the Foundling Hospital, through the efforts of William Hogarth, the success of this venture led to the formation of the Society of Artists of Great Britain and the Free Society of Artists. Both these groups were primarily exhibiting societies, their success was marred by internal factions among the artists. The combined vision of education and exhibition to establish a school of art set the Royal Academy apart from the other exhibiting societies. It provided the foundation upon which the Royal Academy came to dominate the art scene of the 18th and 19th centuries, supplanting the earlier art societies. Sir William Chambers, a prominent architect, used his connections with George III to gain royal patronage and financial support of the Academy, the painter Joshua Reynolds was made its first president. Francis Milner Newton was elected the first secretary, a post he held for two decades until his resignation in 1788, the instrument of foundation, signed by George III on 10 December 1768, named 34 founder members and allowed for a total membership of 40. William Hoare and Johann Zoffany were added to this list later by the King and are known as nominated members, among the founder members were two women, a father and daughter, and two sets of brothers. The Royal Academy was initially housed in cramped quarters in Pall Mall, although in 1771 it was given temporary accommodation for its library and schools in Old Somerset House, then a royal palace. In 1780 it was installed in purpose-built apartments in the first completed wing of New Somerset House, located in the Strand and designed by Chambers, the Academy moved in 1837 to Trafalgar Square, where it occupied the east wing of the recently completed National Gallery. These premises soon proved too small to house both institutions, in 1868,100 years after the Academys foundation, it moved to Burlington House, Piccadilly, where it remains. Burlington House is owned by the British Government, and used rent-free by the Royal Academy, the first Royal Academy exhibition of contemporary art, open to all artists, opened on 25 April 1769 and ran until 27 May 1769. 136 works of art were shown and this exhibition, now known as the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, has been staged annually without interruption to the present day. In 1870 the Academy expanded its programme to include a temporary annual loan exhibition of Old Masters. The range and frequency of these exhibitions have grown enormously since that time. Cumbria

Cumbria is a non-metropolitan county in North West England. The county and Cumbria County Council, its government, came into existence in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. Cumbrias county town is Carlisle, in the north of the county, the county of Cumbria consists of six districts, and in 2008 had a population of just under half a million. Cumbria is one of the most sparsely populated counties in the United Kingdom, a large area of the south east of the county is within the Yorkshire Dales National Park while the east of the county fringes the North Pennines AONB. Much of Cumbria is mountainous, and it contains every peak in England over 3,000 feet above sea level, with Scafell Pike at 3,209 feet being the highest point of England. An upland, coastal, and rural area, Cumbrias history is characterised by invasions, migration, notable historic sites in Cumbria include Carlisle Castle, Furness Abbey, Hardknott Roman Fort, Brough Castle and Hadrians Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. D. Based on inscriptional evidence from the area, the Roman civitas of the Carvetii seems to have covered portions of Cumbria, the names Cumbria, Cymru, Cambria, and Cumberland are derived from the name these people gave themselves, *kombroges in Common Brittonic, which originally meant compatriots. In the Early Middle Ages, Cumberland formed the core of the Brittonic kingdom of Rheged, for the rest of the first millennium, Cumbria was contested by several entities who warred over the area, including the Brythonic Kingdom of Strathclyde and the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria. Most of modern-day Cumbria was a principality in the Kingdom of Scotland at the time of the Norman conquest of England in 1066, in 1092 Cumberland was invaded by William II and incorporated into England. There were at least three sieges of Carlisle fought between England and Scotland, and two sieges during the Jacobite risings. In particular, the west-coast towns of Workington, Millom and Barrow-in-Furness saw large iron and steel mills develop, Kendal, Keswick and Carlisle all became mill towns, with textiles, pencils and biscuits among the products manufactured in the region. Later, the childrens writer Beatrix Potter also wrote in the region and became a major landowner and its strategic authority is Cumbria County Council. Local papers The Westmorland Gazette and Cumberland and Westmorland Herald continue to use the name of their historic county, other publications, such as local government promotional material, describe the area as Cumbria, as do the Lake District National Park Authority and most visitors. Cumbria is the most northwesterly county of England, the northernmost and southernmost points in Cumbria are just west of Deadwater, Northumberland and South Walney respectively. Kirkby Stephen and St Bees Head are the most easterly and westerly points of the county, at 978 metres Scafell Pike is the highest point in Cumbria and in England. Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, the Lancaster Canal runs from Preston into South Cumbria and is partly in use. The Ulverston Canal which once reached to Morecambe Bay is maintained although it was closed in 1945, the Solway Coast and Arnside and Silverdale AONBs lie in the lowland areas of the county, to the north and south respectively. Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press is the largest university press in the world, and the second oldest after Cambridge University Press. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the known as the delegates of the press. They are headed by the secretary to the delegates, who serves as OUPs chief executive, Oxford University has used a similar system to oversee OUP since the 17th century. The university became involved in the print trade around 1480, and grew into a printer of Bibles, prayer books. OUP took on the project became the Oxford English Dictionary in the late 19th century. Moves into international markets led to OUP opening its own offices outside the United Kingdom, by contracting out its printing and binding operations, the modern OUP publishes some 6,000 new titles around the world each year. OUP was first exempted from United States corporation tax in 1972, as a department of a charity, OUP is exempt from income tax and corporate tax in most countries, but may pay sales and other commercial taxes on its products. The OUP today transfers 30% of its surplus to the rest of the university. OUP is the largest university press in the world by the number of publications, publishing more than 6,000 new books every year, the Oxford University Press Museum is located on Great Clarendon Street, Oxford. Visits must be booked in advance and are led by a member of the archive staff, displays include a 19th-century printing press, the OUP buildings, and the printing and history of the Oxford Almanack, Alice in Wonderland and the Oxford English Dictionary. The first printer associated with Oxford University was Theoderic Rood, the first book printed in Oxford, in 1478, an edition of Rufinuss Expositio in symbolum apostolorum, was printed by another, anonymous, printer. Famously, this was mis-dated in Roman numerals as 1468, thus apparently pre-dating Caxton, roods printing included John Ankywylls Compendium totius grammaticae, which set new standards for teaching of Latin grammar. After Rood, printing connected with the university remained sporadic for over half a century, the chancellor, Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, pleaded Oxfords case. Some royal assent was obtained, since the printer Joseph Barnes began work, Oxfords chancellor, Archbishop William Laud, consolidated the legal status of the universitys printing in the 1630s. Laud envisaged a unified press of world repute, Oxford would establish it on university property, govern its operations, employ its staff, determine its printed work, and benefit from its proceeds. To that end, he petitioned Charles I for rights that would enable Oxford to compete with the Stationers Company and the Kings Printer and these were brought together in Oxfords Great Charter in 1636, which gave the university the right to print all manner of books. Laud also obtained the privilege from the Crown of printing the King James or Authorized Version of Scripture at Oxford and this privilege created substantial returns in the next 250 years, although initially it was held in abeyance. The Stationers Company was deeply alarmed by the threat to its trade, under this, the Stationers paid an annual rent for the university not to exercise its full printing rights – money Oxford used to purchase new printing equipment for smaller purposes

Beijing is the capital of the Peoples Republic of China and the worlds third most populous city proper. It is also one of the worlds most populous capital cities, the city, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts. Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by population after Shanghai and is the nations political, cultural. It is home to the headquarters of most of Chinas largest state-owned companies, and is a hub for the national highway, expressway, railway. The citys history dates back three millennia, as the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political centre of the country for much of the past eight centuries. Beijing was the largest city in the world by population for much of the second millennium A. D, the city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates. Its art treasures and universities have made it centre of culture, encyclopædia Britannica notes that few cities in the world have served for so long as the political headquarters and cultural centre of an area as immense as China. Siheyuans, the traditional housing style, and hutongs, the narrow alleys between siheyuans, are major tourist attractions and are common in urban Beijing. The city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, many of Beijings 91 universities consistently rank among the best in China, of which Peking University and Tsinghua University are ranked in the top 60 universities in the world. Beijings Zhongguancun area is known as Chinas Silicon Valley and Chinas center of innovation. According to the 2016 InterNations Expat Insider Survey, Beijing ranked first in Asia in the subcategory Personal Finance Index, expats live primarily in urban districts such as Dongcheng and Chaoyang in the east, or in suburban districts such as Shunyi. Over the past 3,000 years, the city of Beijing has had other names. The name Beijing, which means Northern Capital, was applied to the city in 1403 during the Ming Dynasty to distinguish the city from Nanjing, the English spelling is based on the pinyin romanisation of the two characters as they are pronounced in Standard Mandarin. Those dialects preserve the Middle Chinese pronunciation of 京 as kjaeng, the single Chinese character abbreviation for Beijing is 京, which appears on automobile license plates in the city. The official Latin alphabet abbreviation for Beijing is BJ, the earliest traces of human habitation in the Beijing municipality were found in the caves of Dragon Bone Hill near the village of Zhoukoudian in Fangshan District, where Peking Man lived. Homo erectus fossils from the date to 230,000 to 250,000 years ago. Paleolithic Homo sapiens also lived more recently, about 27,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found neolithic settlements throughout the municipality, including in Wangfujing, the first walled city in Beijing was Ji, a city from the 11th to 7th century BC

Boars Hill

Boars Hill is a hamlet 3 miles southwest of Oxford, straddling the boundary between the civil parishes of Sunningwell and Wootton. Historically part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire, the earliest known record of Boars Hill is from the 12th century. The greater part of Boars Hill was historically a manor of the parish of Cumnor until the 19th century when the parish of Wootton was formed. Until the late 19th century the hill was almost bare and had fine views - northwards to the city of Oxford, southwards to the Downs, Boars Hill does not have its own Church of England parish church. As it straddles two parishes the respective parts of Boars Hill are served by St. Peters, Wootton and St. Leonards, St. Thomas More Roman Catholic chapel in Boars Hill is part of the Roman Catholic parish of North Hinksey. The first poet to leave a record of a visit to the hill was Arthur Hugh Clough, the famous phrase in the latter the dreaming spires encouraged people to visit the hill and settle there. Three prominent poets lived on the hill, the first being Margaret Louisa Woods in the 1880s and she was followed by Robert Bridges and John Masefield, successive Poets Laureate. Bridges daughter, the poet Elizabeth Daryush, continued to live on the hill until her death in 1977, Robert Bridges lived at Chilswell House, which was purchased circa 1963 by the Carmelite order for use as a priory and retreat. Other notable residents were the sculptor Oscar Nemon who fled from Nazi rule in Vienna in 1938 and his house, Youlbury, notable for its Minoan decoration, has since been burnt down. His family lived on at that address for around ten years before dispersing. Jonny Greenwood, of British band Radiohead, lives in Boars Hill, Arthur Evans had Jarn Mound built, built to create a viewpoint from which to see the famous vistas that had been hidden by development. The surrounding trees have continued to grow taller, and the views are again obscured, Evans left most of his estate to the Boy Scouts and Youlbury Camp is still available for their use. From 1933 to 1975 Boars Hill was the home of Ripon Hall, the site is now known as Foxcombe Hall, and is the regional headquarters of the Open University. From 1955 to the mid-1970s, Boars Hill was home to Plater College, the college attracted controversy due to alleged links to Oxford University and was eventually sued with the site repossessed. Soon after the squatters moved in and the site of the former Bishops palace. Yatscombe Hall was destroyed by fire in December 2003 and all the buildings on the site were demolished, however eventually a development of a four large country homes was built on the site by Millgate Homes. Boars Hill is twice mentioned in the 1945 novel Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, first, Cousin Jasper advises the young Charles Ryder upon his coming up to Oxford to. Keep clear of Boars Hill. In contrast, Sebastian Flyte describes a student at Oxford as one who smokes a great pipe and plays hockey and goes out to tea on Boars Hill

Robert Newton

Robert Newton was an English stage and film actor. Along with Errol Flynn, Newton was one of the most popular actors among the juvenile audience of the 1940s and early 1950s. Known for his hard drinking lifestyle, he was cited as a model by the actor Oliver Reed. He would continue to portray Blackbeard in 1952 and Long John Silver again in the 1954 film of the same name, hailing from Dorset in the West Country of southern England, his exaggeration of his West Country accent is credited with popularising the stereotypical pirate voice. Newton has become the saint of the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Robert Guy Newton was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, a son of the landscape painter Algernon Newton and he was educated in Lamorna near Penzance, Cornwall, then at Exeter School and St Bartholomews School in Newbury, Berkshire. His acting career began at the age of 16 at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1921 and he followed this by performing in plays in the West End of London. He also appeared in Private Lives on Broadway, taking over the role from his friend Laurence Olivier, from 1932 to 1934, he was the manager of the Shilling Theatre in Fulham, London. In 1939, he played Horatio to Laurence Oliviers Hamlet at the Old Vic, in a production also included Alec Guinness. During the war he starred in the West End in No Orchids for Miss Blandish and his final performance on stage was in the 1950 production of Gaslight with Rosamund John at the Vaudeville Theatre. During World War II, Newton served in the Royal Navy on board HMS Britomart and he also starred in a number of notable films. There were also roles that displayed his versatility, in Alfred Hitchcocks film Jamaica Inn, he played a virtuous law officer. Newton appeared in roles in two films based on the novella The Vessel of Wrath by W. Somerset Maugham. He played the Dutch contrôleur in the 1938 version, and the role of Edward Ginger Ted Wilson in The Beachcomber. He starred as the Scottish hatter, James Brodie, in Hatters Castle and he also played Ancient Pistol in Laurence Oliviers 1944 film of Henry V and Lukey in Carol Reeds Odd Man Out, this performance was later immortalised in Harold Pinters play Old Times. A good example of Newton playing a lead role is Noël Cowards This Happy Breed directed by David Lean in 1944. He again played Long John Silver in a 1954 Australian-made film and it was shot at Pagewood Studios, Sydney and directed by Byron Haskin, who had directed Treasure Island. The company went on to make a 26-episode 1955 TV series, The Adventures of Long John Silver, while filming in Australia in 1954, Newton was declared bankrupt with debts in the UK of £47,000

Yale University Press is a university press associated with Yale University. It was founded in 1908 by George Parmly Day, and became a department of Yale University in 1961. New and backlist titles are now published under the Anchor Yale Bible Series name, the Dwight H. Terry Lectureship was established in 1905 to encourage the consideration of religion in the context of modern science, psychology, and philosophy. Many of the lectures, which are hosted by Yale University, have been edited into book form by the Yale University Press, the Yale Publishing Course was founded in 2010 by former Publishing Director of the Yale University Press, Tina C. It filled the gap created by the closing of the legendary Stanford Publishing Course and it operates under the aegis of the Office of International Affairs of Yale University. The Course trains mid to senior-level publishing professionals to tackle the most compelling issues facing the publishing industry, the curriculum focuses on in-depth analyses of global trends, innovative business models, management strategies, and new advances in technology. Its immersive week-long programs, one devoted to publishing and the other to magazine and digital publishing, combine lectures, discussion groups. The faculty is made up of leading experts and members of the Yale School of Management, the Yale Library. Mark Jones (museum director)

Sir Mark Ellis Powell Jones FSA FRSE is a British art historian, numismatist and museum director. He was Master of St Cross College, Oxford from 2011-2016, previously, from 2001 to 2011, he was director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Jones was born on 5 February 1951 and he is the son of writer and historian, Ann Paludan. He was educated at Eton College, a public school in Eton. He studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Worcester College, Oxford and he then undertook postgraduate studies in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, graduating with a Master of Arts degree. Jones spent 18 years in the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, in 1992 he was appointed director of the National Museums of Scotland, and here he gained a high reputation. He oversaw the creation in 1998 of the Museum of Scotland, which went on to win 22 prizes for its displays, in May 2001, Jones became Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. On his first day as director, he announced the scrapping of entry charges to the museum, under his directorship a number of renewal projects have been completed, including the Medieval and Renaissance galleries which opened in 2009. On 18 November 2010, it was announced that Jones had been elected as the next Master of St Cross College, Oxford and he retired from the post in September 2016, and was succeeded by Carole Souter. He is married to Dr Camilla Toulmin, the director of the International Institute for Environment and Development. They have three children and Jones has a daughter from a previous marriage, fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. St Cross College, Oxford

St Cross College is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. It is a college with traditional-style buildings on a central site in St Giles. It aims to match the structure, life and support of undergraduate colleges, founded in 1965, the college is the fourth youngest of Oxfords 38 colleges. In September 2016, she succeeded Sir Mark Jones, who had been Master of St Cross since 2011, St Cross College was formally set up as a society by the University on 5 October 1965, it was to admit its first graduate students in the following year. The early location of St Cross was on a site in St Cross Road, the college was named for its proximity to these places. In 1976 negotiations began between the college and the members of Pusey House over the possibility of moving the college to the St Giles site. The negotiations were successful, and in 1981 the college moved from St Cross Road into a site owned by Pusey House for a period of 999-years. The site now houses two residential buildings, which were opened in 1996, unlike every other college head, the Master of St Cross is appointed not by the colleges governing body but by the University Council. Therefore, the election has only the character of a recommendation to Council, the college is located on St Giles near to the Ashmolean Museum, and immediately north of Blackfriars. It is also within metres of the Classics faculty and the Oriental Institute, regents Park College, one of Oxfords Permanent Private Halls, is also nearby. The Pusey House buildings date from the period of 1884 to 1926 and are mainly the work of the architects Temple and Leslie Moore, discreet internal alterations were made when St Cross moved in by Geoffrey Beard and the Oxford Architects Partnership. Among these was the conversion of a cloister and store rooms into the Saugman Hall named after Per Saugman, a former Director of Blackwell Scientific Publications, most students, however, refer to the Richard Blackwell Quadrangle by its nickname, the Quad. Behind the main buildings to the west, and through the four colleges arch and it should be noted that Four Colleges Arch is referred to by most students as that arch. This has offered the college the possibility of expanding its buildings, work has so far been completed on one new wing, containing a hall and kitchen, with bar, function room and games room below, and study bedrooms above. The final sections of the quadrangle, otherwise known as the West Quad, were set to be completed in time for the colleges semicentennial in 2015. However, planning permission for the new building was rejected, as it required the demolition of a boundary wall. Planning permission was subsequently granted following an appeal, and the West Quad is now due to be completed in October 2016, the new West Quad will include 50 new student bedrooms, a new lecture theatre, a library with a garden room, and several new seminar rooms. St Cross has just under 500 graduate students at any one time, there is a strong emphasis on international diversity, with 70% of the students coming from outside the UK
