Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician, author, a 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The first and incumbent State Counsellor of Myanmar, she is the leader of the National League for Democracy and played a vital role in the state's transition from military junta to partial democracy. Of late, she has attracted considerable criticism for having enabled the state-perpetrated genocide of Rohingyas; the youngest daughter of Aung San, Father of the Nation of modern-day Myanmar, Khin Kyi, Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Rangoon, British Burma. After graduating from the University of Delhi in 1964 and the University of Oxford in 1968, she worked at the United Nations for three years, she married Michael Aris in 1972, with. Aung San Suu Kyi rose to prominence in the 1988 Uprisings, became the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy, which she had newly formed with the help of several retired army officials who criticized the military junta. In the 1990 elections, NLD won 81% of the seats in Parliament, but the results were nullified, as the military refused to hand over power, resulting in an international outcry.

She had, however been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest for 15 of the 21 years from 1989 to 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. In 1999, Time Magazine named her one of the "Children of Gandhi" and his spiritual heir to nonviolence, her party boycotted the 2010 elections, resulting in a decisive victory for the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party. Aung San Suu Kyi became a Pyithu Hluttaw MP while her party won 43 of the 45 vacant seats in the 2012 by-elections. In the 2015 elections, her party won a landslide victory, taking 86% of the seats in the Assembly of the Union – well more than the 67% supermajority needed to ensure that its preferred candidates were elected President and Second Vice President in the Presidential Electoral College. Although she was prohibited from becoming the President due to a clause in the constitution – her late husband and children are foreign citizens – she assumed the newly created role of State Counsellor, a role akin to a Prime Minister or a head of government.

Since ascending to the office of State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi has drawn criticism from several countries and figures over her alleged inaction in response to the genocide of the Rohingya people in Rakhine State and refusal to accept that Myanmar's military has committed massacres. Under her leadership, Myanmar has drawn criticism for prosecutions of journalists. In 2019, Suu Kyi appeared in the International Court of Justice where she defended the Burmese military against allegations of genocide against the Rohingya. Aung San Suu Kyi, like other Burmese names, includes no surname, but is only a personal name, in her case derived from three relatives: "Aung San" from her father, "Suu" from her paternal grandmother, "Kyi" from her mother Khin Kyi; the Burmese refer to her as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Daw meaning "aunt", is not part of her name but is an honorific for any older and revered woman, akin to "Madam". Burmese sometimes address her as Amay Suu. Aung San Suu Kyi was born on 19 June 1945 in British Burma.

According to Peter Popham, she was born in a small village outside Rangoon called Hmway Saung. Her father, Aung San, allied with the Japanese during World War II. Aung San founded the modern Burmese army and negotiated Burma's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, she grew up with her mother, Khin Kyi, two brothers, Aung San Lin and Aung San Oo, in Rangoon. Aung San Lin died at the age of eight, when he drowned in an ornamental lake on the grounds of the house, her elder brother emigrated to San Diego, becoming a United States citizen. After Aung San Lin's death, the family moved to a house by Inya Lake where Aung San Suu Kyi met people of various backgrounds, political views and religions, she was educated in Methodist English High School for much of her childhood in Burma, where she was noted as having a talent for learning languages. She speaks four languages: Burmese, English and Japanese, she is a Theravada Buddhist. Suu Kyi's mother, Khin Kyi, gained prominence as a political figure in the newly formed Burmese government.

She was appointed Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960, Aung San Suu Kyi followed her there. She studied in the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in New Delhi, graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, a constituent college of the University of Delhi in New Delhi, with a degree in politics in 1964. Suu Kyi continued her education at St Hugh's College, obtaining a B. A. degree in Philosophy and Economics in 1967, graduating with a third-class degree and M. A. degree in politics in 1968. After graduating, she lived in New York City with family friend Ma Than E, once a popular Burmese pop singer, she worked at the United Nations for three years on budget matters, writing daily to her future husband, Dr. Michael Aris. On 1 January 1972, Aung San Suu Kyi and Aris, a scholar of Tibetan culture and literature, living abroad in Bhutan, were married; the following year she gave birth to Alexander Aris, in London. Between 1985 and 1987, Aung San Suu Kyi was working toward an M. Phil. degree in Burmese literature as a research student at SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Conrad Maduro

Conrad Antonio Maduro is a veteran politician in the British Virgin Islands and longtime leader of the United Party. Remarkably, Conrad Maduro has led his party to victory at three different general elections, but has never been appointed Chief Minister. In the 1967 general election, Maduro as President led the United Party to victory, but lost his individual seat to Isaac Glanville Fonseca; as he was not elected, Lavity Stoutt was appointed Chief Minister in his stead. In the subsequent 1971 general election, Maduro would win his seat. In the 1975 general election, the United Party once again won the general election, but Maduro lost his seat. However, as the party formed a coalition with Willard Wheatley, the incumbent Chief Minister, it is unlikely Maduro would have been appointed Chief Minister if he had won. In the 1983 general election, the United Party won the general election, Maduro won his seat. However, the party again needed to form a coalition, formed it with Cyril Romney with Cyril Romney becoming Chief Minister.

Maduro has contested more general elections in the British Virgin Islands than any other politician except for Lavity Stoutt and Ralph T. O'Neal, contesting ten general elections between the 1967 general election and the 2003 general election, winning four times. Including by-elections, Conrad Maduro has contested 11 elections in total. Whereas politics in the British Virgin Islands is characterised by leading politicians crossing the floor, during his political career Maduro was unusual in remaining steadfastly loyal to the United Party. After the 1983 general election, he formed part of the coalition government and served as Minister for Natural Resources and Public Health, he performed the same Ministerial role as an opposition politician between 1972 and 1975 when Dr Q. W. Osborne was removed from his ministerial post in 1972. In 1986, he won election in the 2nd District over Prince Stoutt by just a single vote, tied for the record for the narrowest margin of victory in a British Virgin Islands election.

His victory with just 92 votes is a record for the smallest number of votes for a victorious candidate. From 1988 to 1990, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council of the British Virgin Islands. In June 2014 Maduro announced his desire to return the United Party to political prominence, confirmed that if selected as a candidate he would run in the next general election. If he did so he would contest his 12th election in the British Virgin Islands, breaking the tie he presently holds with Lavity Stoutt and Ralph O'Neal for the most general elections contested; however he did not end up contesting the 2015 general election

Golden mole

Golden moles are small insectivorous burrowing mammals endemic to Southern Africa, where their Afrikaans names are gouemolle or kruipmolle. They comprise the family Chrysochloridae and as such they are taxonomically distinct from the true moles, family Talpidae, other mole-like families, all of which, to various degrees, they resemble as a result of evolutionary convergence. Like most burrowing mammals with similar habits, the Chrysochloridae have short legs with powerful digging claws dense fur that repels dirt and moisture, toughened skin on the head, their eyes are covered with furred skin. The external ears are just tiny openings. In particular, golden moles bear a remarkable resemblance to the marsupial moles of Australia, family Notoryctidae, which they resemble so suggestively that at one time, the marsupial/placental divide not withstanding, some argued that they were related. Considerations that influenced the debate might have included the view that the Chrysochloridae are primitive placentals and the fact that they have many mole-like specializations similar to specializations in marsupial moles.

The rhinarium is a enlarged, dry leathery pad that protects their nostrils while the animal digs. In this respect too, they resemble the marsupial moles; some authors claim their primary sense is of touch, they are sensitive to vibrations which may indicate approaching danger. Note below however, the observations on the malleus in the middle ear; the species range in size from about 8 to about 20 cm. They have muscular shoulders and the forelimbs are radically adapted for digging; the fifth digit is absent and the first and fourth digits are vestigial. The adaptations of the hind feet are less dramatic, they retain all five toes and are webbed as an adaptation to efficient backward shovelling of soil loosened by the front claws. At one time the Chrysochloridae were regarded as primitive. Supporting arguments included: that they were thought to have originated in Gondwana, that they had a low resting metabolic rate, they could switch off thermoregulation when inactive. Like the tenrecs, they possess a cloaca, males lack a scrotum.

However, such points are no longer regarded as suggestive of golden moles as undeveloped "reptilian mammals". Going into a torpor when resting or during cold weather enables them to conserve energy and reduce urgent requirements for food, they have developed efficient kidneys and most species do not need to drink water at all. Most species of Chrysochloridae live exclusively underground in their preferred environments, beneath either grassveld, swamps, deserts, or mountainous terrain. However, Chrysospalax species tend to forage above ground in meadows. Eremitalpa species such as Grant's golden mole live in the sandy Namib desert, where they cannot form tunnels because the sand collapses. Instead during the day, when they must seek shelter, they swim through the loose sand, using their broad claws to paddle, dive down some 50 cm to where it is bearably cool. There they enter a state of torpor, thus conserving energy. At night they emerge to forage on the surface rather than wasting energy shifting sand.

Their main prey are termites that live under isolated grass clumps, they might travel for 6 kilometres a night in search of food. They seek promising clumps by listening for wind-rustled grass-root stresses and termites' head-banging alarm signals, neither of which can be heard above ground, so they stop periodically and dip their heads under the sand to listen. Most other species construct both foraging superficial burrows and deeper permanent burrows for residence. Residential burrows are complex in form, may penetrate as far as a metre below ground and include deep chambers for use as bolt-holes, other chambers as latrines, they compact it into the tunnel walls. They feed on small vertebrates such as lizards or burrowing snakes, they depend on their sense of hearing to locate much of their prey, the cochleas of a number of golden mole species have been found to be long and coiled, which may indicate a greater ecological dependence on low frequency auditory cues than we see in Talpid moles.

Some species have hypertrophied middle ear ossicles, in particular the malleus, adapted towards the detection of seismic vibrations. In this respect there is some apparent convergent evolution to burrowing reptiles in the family Amphisbaenidae. Females give birth to one to three hairless young in a grass-lined nest within the burrow system. Breeding occurs throughout the year; the adults are solitary, their burrowing territory may be aggressively defended from intruders where resources are scarce. Of the 21 species of golden mole, no fewer than 11 are threatened with extinction; the primary causes are sand mining, poor agricultural practices, increasing urbanisation, predation by domestic cats and dogs. The taxonomy of the Chrysochloridae is undergoing a review in the light of new genetic information, they have traditionally been listed with the shrews, hedgehogs and a grab-bag of small, difficult-to-place creatures as part of the order Insectivora. Some authorities retain this classification, at least for the time being.

Others group the golden moles with the tenrecs in a new order, sometimes known as Tenrecomorpha, while others call

RuPaul Is: Starbooty!

RuPaul is: Starbooty! is a 1987 low-budget underground film trilogy starring and co-produced by a then-unknown drag queen, RuPaul. Because it was produced on a low budget, various posters and video covers alternate the spelling between "Starbooty" and "Starrbooty". Filmed on a zero-dollar budget, the movies are a pastiche of 1960s blaxploitation films. RuPaul stars as Starbooty, a crime fighting federal agent who disposes of villains while getting entangled in romantic liaisons. At the time, RuPaul was still participating in a type of drag known as genderfuck. Outside the canon of the actual films, a sketch on RuPaul's VH1 talk show continued the storyline of the character of Starbooty with a preview for an alleged new film called "Starbooty in: Take That You Honky Bitch". In 2006 RuPaul used his blog to discuss a film he was in the process of making which he called "The Untitled RuPaul Movie"; the film was titled Starrbooty: Reloaded but is just called Starrbooty. The film follows similar plot lines from the previous ones, but contains more sexually explicit content.

When produced, cheaply manufactured video cassettes were passed out on the streets and at clubs. They can be purchased together on one video cassette and DVD at the website of Funtone Records, a trademark established by Jon Witherspoon, the man who paid to produce the films originally. Star Booty I: The Motion Picture opens with the kidnapping of President Ronald Reagan’s son, Ron Reagan, in an affluent Atlanta neighborhood by the Evil Twins, one male and the other female; the word is spread quickly. Max, a secret agent, calls Star Booty, an ex-model turned secret agent to alert her of the situation. Star Booty is revealed in the conversation to be a patriotic American citizen, she is grateful that her employment with the United States government has turned her life into something positive, something she keeps repeating in the film. Hiding in a house, the Evil Twins reveal that they plan to infect the world with the AIDS virus, which they have samples of bottled in a jar; when the Twins discover Star Booty snooping around, they decide to dump the virus through the water pipes.

Star Booty thwarts the plan. The Twins start to fight her and as they fight, Star Booty finds heroin on the male twin; as both twins are lying unconscious Star Booty gives a heartfelt monologue about her mission to purge drugs from society. The Twins wake up and try to escape. Star Booty throws the Twins from the second story to the ground and they die. Max calls Star Booty to congratulate her on her success. While he is speaking and his secretary are fondling and doing heroin, which may suggest a conspiracy. Star Booty II: The Mack is the sequel. RuPaul reprises her role as Star Booty; the film opens with Cornisha, renouncing her harlot ways. Mack beats her down. Cornisha, manages to escape and reach a payphone to call Star Booty; as she is talking, Cornisha dies, as a result of her injuries. A helicopter arrives with Max. Max is shown from the back and played by a different actor and his face is never revealed, he gives her information about Mack. Star Booty vows to kill Mack. On the streets of Atlanta, a whore named Lizeth, two unnamed ones, hustle for their breakfast.

Star Booty, comes upon these girls with a swagger and a confidence that they don't have. She inquires whether they have a pimp or not and she urges them to be self-reliant and join her. Lizeth is revealed to be pessimistic and codependent on Mack and claims he treats her right and is reluctant to do so, she befriends them and before long, they are running the streets together. Mack takes her to his bar hideout. Mack gives her a puff of his cigarette, their canoodling is interrupted by a phone call. The caller, revealed to be Lizeth, warns Mack that Star Booty is going to kill him. While Mack is speaking on the phone, Star Booty starts snooping around for evidence and discovers files that show evidence of her sister's murder and exploiting of women. Mack catches Star Booty and she reveals who she is and why she is there. Star Booty escapes and meets with the other girls and discovers that Lizeth is the traitor and Star Booty and the other girls go find her. Unbeknownst to them, Lizeth is searching for Star Booty to kill her.

Star Booty and the girls encounter Lizeth. A fight ensues and Lizeth is killed. Star Booty finds him in a parking lot. A scuffle ensues and during the fight, Mack pulls a Tommy gun that Star Booty manages to knock out of his hand before he can shoot. Quick thinking and fast reflexes, she kills Mack. Star Booty gives him searches for Mack and finds him in a parking lot; the films closes with a song called “The Mack”. Star Booty III: Star Booty's Revenge is the third installment; the film opens with Max. The Singing Peek Sisters have kidnapped Larry Tee; this time the film takes us from Atlanta to New York city. There's an opening montage of shots. Star Booty arrives at the hideout of the Singing Peek Sisters where they have tied Larry Tee with dynamite and are angry with not having a recording contract while their rivals do. Star Booty encourages them to follow her plan to success, they let Tee go and
