The Hindustan Ambassador dominated India's automotive market from the 1960s until the mid-1980s and was manufactured until 2014.
Fiat 1100D, built under license by Premier Automobiles later re-christened 'Premier Padmini' was the Ambassador's only true competitor.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the Indian subsidiary of Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corporation. As of September 2022, the company had a leading market share of 42 percent in the Indian passenger car market. The Government of India established Maruti Udyog Limited in February 1981 as a joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corporation as a small partner. In 1982, Maruti opened its first production facility in Gurugram, Haryana, India.
